SHAMIR Lady boy sings the blues.
T
he bright lights and big city atmosphere of Las Vegas formed some of the earliest memories of 21-year-old singer/songwriter Shamir Bailey. From a young age, Shamir, who is building a mononymous career like many trailblazers before him, soaked in the eclectic soundscape taking shape at the turn of the millennium. Shamir absorbed Outkast and Groove Theory while processing music pioneers like Janis Joplin and Nina Simone. His sound is just as transcendent. At the age of 16, Shamir, who identifies as genderqueer and, as such, doesn’t ascribe to gay labels, fronted a punk rock band with friends and began recording tracks for his first EP while still in high school. He was signed to New York City’s Godmode shortly after graduating. Shamir dropped his debut album, Ratchet, in the spring of 2015. It quickly climbed the list of the year’s “Best Of…” music roundups and solidified him as one of the industry’s most promising newcomers.
His brand of electrifying disco house makes his music decidedly current and unmistakably retro at the same time. This anachronistic juxtaposition makes his sound undeniably unique (and irresistible.) The first single from Ratchet,, "Call It Off," relies on distorted string work and a danceable baseline tethered to a schizophrenic synthesizer to tell the story of a relationship gone wrong. If disco diva Sylvester had a baby with the Scissor Sisters, it may sound like Shamir. Shamir will open a number of 2016 tour dates for rock royalty Duran Duran and recently covered the band’s enduring hit “Hungry Like the Wolf.” With the promise of new music this year, Shamir is set to take over the world—one disco-laden track at a time.

NIGHTLIFE
PULSE NIGHTCLUB HAS CEMENTED ITSELF AS ONE OF CENTRAL FLORIDA'S PREMIER NIGHTLIFE DESTINATIONS. WITH A HISTORY SPANNING MORE THAN 11 YEARS, FOUNDERS BARBARA POMA & RON LEGLER'S COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY AND AN ALL-INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT HAVE SET THE STANDARD FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW.
W
BY DIEGO WYATT
ith a rotating cast of local talent, a welcoming environment and an inspired mission, Pulse Orlando is a respite in a sea of nightlife venues flooding Central Florida.
"When Barbara had the opportunity to open Pulse, which is named for John's pulse to live on, she dedicated it to be a safe place for the LGBT community," says Garcia. "She could've done anything she wanted with the space, but she gave the gay community a place to enjoy each other's company."
Upon entering, patrons are greeted by a striking waterfall feature and a largerthan-life chandelier, both of which set the tone for an unforgettable evening. Inside, there are three distinct party areas. Guests are free to choose which best suits their present mood. Some fall under the spellbinding mystery of the Adonis Room, an intimate space filled with beautiful male and female go-go dancers. Some head to the Lounge, complete with a state-of-theart lighting and sound system, a dance floor, VIP area and the main bar. And others go for the patio, which is undergoing some sprucing up to accommodate the relaxed atmosphere. Each area has its own DJ and vibe. Translation: There's something for everyone.
Pulse has a weekly lineup that has eager partygoers flocking to the venue to enjoy the friendly and open-minded vibe. Mondays, Pulse turns into a Reggaetón dancehall for Noche Latina. Tuesday is an all-you-candrink talent night, hosted by Axel Andrews and Kai'ja Adonis. Wednesday is college night, hosted by Angelica Sanchez and weekly guests. Thursdays, the stage is set ablaze with a burlesque show hosted by Lady Bri and Blade Matthews. Friday, it's all about hip hop in a blowout bash hosted by Angelica Sanchez. The week is rounded out by a fiery Latin night hosted by RuPaul's Drag Race alum Kenya Michaels.
"Pulse is always going to be known as very clean and taken care of," remarks Josh Garcia, Pulse's Marketing Assistant. "We always strive to make sure that everyone who comes in has a great night—straight, gay, bisexual or transgender. We always try to be a welcoming place." At the center of Pulse is a strong, yet gentle heart. Barbara Poma, one of Pulse's founders, helped bring the nightclub to life in honor of her late brother John, who died following his battle with HIV. Poma and her dear friend, Ron Legler, started Pulse in 2004 as a tribute to her brother's vibrant lust for life. Moreover, Pulse has worked with a number of community organizations throughout Central Florida to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.
"Within the last year, we've really been trying to step it up," says Garcia. "We also have a focus on local talent. We want to show Orlando how much greatness there is in Central Florida." Throughout the entirety of February, things just keep getting better at Pulse. Slated to appear before the end of the month are: Andrew Christian model Topher DiMaggio (2/10), Natalie Nayles (2/10), The 69 Boyz (2/12), Bad Girl's Club alum Zuly Ramos (2/13), and RuPaul Drag Race's Ben De La Creme (2/17) and Jade Jolie (2/24). TAMPA PRIDE'S SECOND ACT 32
COMMUNITY
FOLLOWING YEARS OF ANTICIPATION, TAMPA PRIDE MADE ITS GLORIOUS RETURN LAST YEAR UNDER THE CAREFUL HAND OF PRESIDENT CARRIE WEST AND HIS INCREDIBLE TEAM. WE CHATTED WITH WEST ABOUT SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF PRODUCING SUCH A LARGE EVENT AND WHAT HE ENVISIONS FOR ITS FUTURE. BY DIEGO WYATT
What does helping to resurrect the rich history of Tampa Pride mean to you? Marc [Bias] and I shared our Tampa Pride beginnings back in the ‘80s at University of South Florida (USF). It had already been here by the time we came here. That’s where they started having the Pride events. Some of the events that they had there were very basic. It was just the bars that were participating. Going on forward, we were not involved, but we did attend. It evolved into bringing in the gay choruses to their big convention when they were here in 1996 and it was the biggest convention held in Central Florida up to that point. Staring in 2002, with the problems they had in Tampa, there was a change with what events were happening. Tampa Pride came to St. Petersburg asking for help. We saw it as part of the need to have equal protections and sexual orientation factored into the ordinances of Hillsborough County. It was a very big group effort of individuals with the same thought process and objectives that helped make Tampa Pride happen. I’m glad to have led that team up last year with individuals like Kurt King. What were some of the challenges that you and the board faced last year? There were some organizations and individuals that were upset that Tampa Pride would even be happening in the gay community. They didn’t want to contribute, because, in their minds, it was just a bunch of sissies trying to make a scene. We went out an presented it to the City of Tampa’s division of Special Events, We anticipated 15,000 individuals in attendance—12,000 participants and around 3,000 volunteers, staff and vendors. The Fire Marshal’s report indicated that we had over 40,000 people in attendance. It was a fun-filled event with a different approach to an event going right
through GaYbor. We sold out four weeks early for the festival and three weeks early for the parade. We understood that there were some businesses that wouldn’t support us and just come out to reap the rewards. There were 30 businesses that had record days during Tampa Pride. It’s funny to think back to all of the people that doubted whether or not it was going to happen. We’re try to remain very positive about what’s going on. In terms of logistics, what do you plan on doing differently this time around? This year, we’ll probably be selling out by the middle of February. The first year back, we had a limited number of units and festival booths available so we didn’t overextend ourselves. This year, we’ve changed the avenue of where it’s going to be. The parade continues down 7th avenue down to 20th. Right around Centennial Park, that’s where our event will be. We’re going to be on the outside of the park and a few of the surrounding streets. Last year was the first time USAA Insurance ever did a gay event and they said it was so successful that they now have a GLBT Diversity Board. This year, we have a couple of new ones. Some pharmaceutical companies that have never worked with GLBT companies before. What separates Tampa Pride from the other festivities around the state? When we first came here in 2007, there were 44 empty store fronts in Ybor City on 7th Avenue. Now we have over 200 GLBT-friendly businesses in the area. Tampa has always been a diverse community. The distinctiveness lies in the diversity of all of the people here. What I call the events going on in Central Florida is the Corridor of Pride, meaning on the interstate starting with Sarasota to St. Petersburg, Tampa, Lakeland, Orlando all the way to Daytona

COMMUNITY
Beach Pride. There are a lot of prides in Central Florida. The Corridor of Pride really fits its name. What’s your vision for Tampa Pride three years from now? In three years, we’ll have 100,000 people in attendance. This is home to worldwide and well-known businesses. In the GaYbor District, you can walk hand-in-hand with your partner and kiss—it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman. We want to help the economy of Tampa rise. It’s going to be an enriching environment. It’s going to be more influential with each year. What can people expect from this year’s festivities? This year’s Grand Marshals are FOX 13 news anchor Russell Rhodes and
34
the other is the CEO of Metro Wellness Community Centers Lorraine Langlois. We’re having a new award this year, it’s called the “Recognize Community GLBT Supporter” Award. We had a tie on the board and we have two: former mayor Pam Iorio and businessman and human rights activist Joe Redner. Our celebrity Grand Marshal is photographer Mike Ruiz. We’re also going to have the Key West Historical Flag, which is 50 feet. Also, our new Miss Tampa Pride is Alexis Matteo. It’s all about thinking forward in what we do. It’s about motivating and going for what you want to do. Now, it’s about bringing in other organizations and activities. We appreciate that opportunity and bringing in that growth.

FITNESS
raditionally, we think of Valentine’s Day as a day for being romantic and going to dinner, having a bottle of wine over a wonderful meal and cuddling up on the couch with our significant other to watch a movie. February is ‘Heart Month,’ and to most of us, all of the above sounds like a perfect night. There are some other things you should try and focus on this month to make it not only a holiday of romance, but of moving towards lifelong health and wellness too.
also remember to make it fun! It should never be looked at as a chore. Make the time, whether it’s with a trainer, friend, or partner. Something else to keep in mind, which I tell all of my clients, is you want to remain attractive and healthy so you can enjoy a long life together! Try looking into couples or small group exercise classes that are offered. Some places also offer couples yoga, running clubs or some other types of training.
Did you know that in the US, heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women? It kills more than all forms of cancer combined in the female population.
Make sure to eat a well-balanced, nutritious meal with minimally processed foods. Eat veggies and fruits either raw or steamed. Drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water on a daily basis. Also, a good time-saver is to prepare all of your meals out with your partner at the beginning of the week. Try juicing some fruits and veggies at least once a day, but watch out for the sugar content of some fruits if you’re trying to lose body fat and tone up.
I, myself, lost my father in my late teens due to a heart attack followed by a stroke. Despite being a non-smoker and rarely ever drinking alcohol, he had a terrible diet and used salt on all of his meals in excess. In addition to this, he had a highstress job and never exercised. Despite all of this, there’s something all of us can do starting today to make changes in our lives. Studies show that up to onethird of these deaths can be prevented with proper nutrition and exercising on a regular basis.
COMMITMENT IS KEY! Firstly, make a commitment to exercise and stick to it. Studies show that in about 30 days you can make a daily routine into a lifelong good ‘habit,’ Also, something that I’ve found is that if you bring your partner to the gym, you can have more bonding time together. Plus the postworkout clean up in the shower can be pretty amazing too! You can also take a stroll on a hiking trail or walk around some of the beautiful lakes we’ve got in Central Florida.
HAVE FUN! Try to make exercise not only a habit but
MAINTAIN BALANCED NUTRITION!
CHEAT SMART, NOT OFTEN! If you’ve got a ‘sweet tooth,’ as I do, try getting a few organic chocolate bars with 70% or higher cacao content and put them in the fridge. Every week for my cheat meal, I have two to four pieces of the chocolate so each one lasts about a month. Plus, an added benefit is that dark chocolate can actually reduce the LDL (bad) cholesterol in our bodies by as much as 10%. I hope these tips will help not only keep you and your partner healthy and happy for years to come! See you in the gym! Tony Edge is a Certified Personal Trainer and owner of Tony Edge Fitness, LLC.
