Lance Bass Talks Babies, Manny Pacquiao & More! WORDS BY JAMEER BAPTISTE PHOTO BY TED SUN
When we had the chance to ask the legendary NSYNC band member, Lance Bass, any questions we wanted, we asked them all, from how’s married life treating him to trending topics in news and everything else in between. And just like on the Meredith Show, the blond bombshell held nothing back and spilled the tea. 16

ENTERTAINMENT How’s your marriage going? We got married a little over a year ago on December 20 and of course we thought our honeymoon stage would be great. We thought that we would get to travel and enjoy the first year of marriage. But all of a sudden, we had to move to New York for one year so that kind of ruined our chances of going on vacations but it’s still been nice. We’ve been keeping warm here in NYC and working a lot. However, we are excited to get back home to Los Angles next month. Do you two live in LA and New York? We don’t have a residence in New York anymore. Our prime residence is in Los Angles. But we’ve been here since August doing a nine-month stint for the Meredith Vieira Talk Show. Last time you and Michael were here in Florida, you mentioned possibly owning a second home here. Is that still part of the plan? All my in-laws live in South Beach still so it’s something that we have always wanted. Eventually, we are going to have a second home there. We love it there, not only because our family is there, but also because I’ve spent a lot of time in Florida. I lived in Orlando for eight years and I love that it’s a melting pot, especially in South Florida. With all the different cultures coming together, acceptance comes a lot quicker and easier. Do you see any babies in the future? Yea, I think both of us are very family oriented and always had that dream of having children. And once the honeymoon phase starts going away, we are definitely going to look into having kids. For one, my husband Michael is going to be an amazing dad so I think having that experience of raising an outstanding kid is going to be a great challenge. What are signs that the honeymoon stage is dying down? Once you stop celebrating that amazing
night of your wedding and you kind of start coming down from that high, I think the next logical step to the relationship is looking at a family and being able to share the love that we have to give. What does a family with you and Michael look like? I just want to have healthy children of course, be it a son or daughter. I see us definitely having two or three kids. That’s like the perfect picture in our heads right now but that can certainly change very easily in the next couple years. We also love the idea of adopting so one day in our lives having a kid from an orphanage will be a big thing for us. What are you doing for the Meredith Vieira Talk Show? I’m part of her hot topics panel. We talk about whatever is happening in the news whether it’s pop culture or politics. It’s basically a bunch of friends sitting around the coffee table in the morning drinking coffee and dishing the sh*#t that everyone is talking about while trying to pretend you’re the experts. What’s the latest dish on the tip of everyone tongue at the moment? The it person of the hour of course is Donald Trump these days. You can’t do a show without Donald Trump coming up and of course it’s not for any positive reasons. It’s always for negative reasons. He’s the gift that just keeps on giving. Everybody loves the hot mess. How do you feel about Adidas publicly supporting the LGBT community? I think it’s great! When a corporation makes a stand like that and contractually supports and protects any LGBT person, that’s huge. Hopefully, we will see a lot of other big corporations like Nike or Reebok follow suit. We’re not going to see athletes coming out tomorrow and making this big reveal but nonetheless this is really big for future athletes. A lot of gay athletes opt out of starting their careers because of

ENTERTAINMENT discrimination. Teenagers out there right now that are just absolutely amazing at sports and know that this is what they want to do and just so happen to be LGBT, this will help them make the decision about their future. As far as Nike, what do you think about their decision to severe ties with Manny Pacquiao for his offensive comments made towards the LGBT community? Any kind of bigotry should not be tolerated by any corporation sponsoring a public figure. When you’re in the public eye and you’re a professional athlete or a celebrity, you’re held accountable for your actions and words. Now, you can believe whatever you want to but you can’t get upset when people don’t want to work with you because of those beliefs. I’m very proud that Nike ended their relationship with him. If you could say anything to Manny Pacquiao, what would you say? There’s nothing that I could say to him that he would listen to. People who are set in their ways are just set in their ways. Unfortunately, they just aren’t educated in certain things in their lives. And sometimes it’s not their fault; it’s just the way they’re raised. Some people are just ignorant to certain things. I feel bad for him and I’m sad that he thinks that way because it’s probably something he
learned in life. It shows the company he keeps or who the people are that raised him. The cards that he was dealt in life led him down a very ignorant path. And I hate that people have to be raised like that. Last question, what is one question that you wish us journalists would ask you that you rarely ever get asked? I love that question! My favorite question to be asked is what charities do I love working with because so many don’t get enough attention out there. One of my favorite ones is the Trevor Project. They've saved so many children's lives out there that had nobody to talk to. It’s a hotline I wish more people knew about because I think it could save more people's lives. So any chance I get, I love to give them a shout out. Mingle with Lance Bass and his former Sirius XM Dirty Pop crew before they start their new televised game shows. Cruise Planners/All Out Vacations has planned a weeklong voyage on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship complete with musical acts, special nightly parties and shore excursions, all hosted by Lance Bass and his Dirty Pop family. ecently my friends Jerry and Olivia along with my boyfriend Gabe and visited Bongos Cuban Café at the new Disney Springs complex for Olivia’s birthday. We had awesome food and a great time…and it’s finally time to let you all know about our peek inside and find out what the Big Pineapple has to offer! One of THE most amazing features of Bongos is the wide open feel of the place. Seating is available both inside and outside, giving the restaurant an authentic Cuban or South Beach vibe. After all, these are places where people “live outside,” and most restaurants in these locations really reflect that. To help with the Orlando heat, both inside and out, we noticed high ceilings and lots of ceiling fans. It really lends to the impression of cool, airy spaces. Now when I say this place is huge, I mean HUGE! There are tables everywhere, and you should seriously drop some breadcrumbs on your way to the bathroom to make sure you get back to the right place when you’re done!! With seating upstairs (which is where we sat), downstairs, indoors, and out doors, there are plenty of options to satisfy all taste. Our table offered a nice view of the West End of Disney Springs, the waterway and the Fantasy of Flight hot air ballon attraction. The menu at Bongos is primarily Cuban, which is a fusion of Spanish and a bit of Caribbean influence thrown in. As a result, dishes are flavorful without being overly spicy. You won’t find the heat
in Cuban food that you expect from some Latino cuisine. Instead, there’s an emphasis on garlic, citrus juices, onions, and herbs. Looking over the huge menu took a bit of time, and we asked our server for his suggestions. We quickly settled on the yuca cups as an appetizer. There was enough for four served nice and fresh. We then moved onto ordering our main courses which included the Cuban Meatloaf, Chicken Bites which are marinated in Cuban Mojo and then lightly fried, Traditional Ceviche which came out fresh, flavorful and nicely chilled, and the Vegetable Stew which was made up of Cuban vegetables stewed in some wonderful spices. All of our entrees were served with their famous black beans and rice along with some hot Cuban bread. (of course we had two baskets of bread, lol.) We enjoyed all the food which waswas absolutely wonderful and conveyed characteristic Cuban flavors, and the variety of dishes available made it easy for us to sample lots of different tastes. I personally ordered the Chicken Bites and can’t wait to go back for more! Until next time - mangia, mangia, mangia! GETTING YOURSELF ON TRACK FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY TONY EDGE
56
A
s a trainer, I've worked with many people over the years and have helped a great many of them reach their goals both physically and mentally. Although there are some people that, no matter how hard they try, tend to 'fall off the training wagon' and lose motivation and their nutrition falls by the wayside. Then again many of us know someone that always manages to get into the gym or run their next marathon and seem to have no issue staying motivated to reach their goals. In this month's column, I'm going to share some things that'll help you to get motivated and get you on track to making exercise a healthy habit for life.
GET PREPARED Get prepared for the next day in the gym. Make sure to set your alarm, your journal, and lay out your gym clothes and bag of work clothes to change into after your training session. I've found over the years that having a set time to train rather than different times or later in the day helps to keep you motivated. Its also helpful to workout first thing in the morning and it helps to get the endorphins and the blood pumping rather then working out too late in the day when the gym is more crowded.
PLAN YOUR WORKOUTS Plan your workouts in advance and make sure to keep a journal. The purpose of a journal is to set small and large goals for yourself in whatever type of workout that you are doing. As I've mentioned before in previous columns, no matter how great your memory is, you won't be able to remember what your weight, body fat percentage, weights and reps, times of your cardio are. It always excites me to see an increase in the weights/reps or decrease the time it takes to perform a circuit routine. Also keep a nutrition log that'll
FITNESS help you track your calories, macros, and any 'slip-ups' so you can tweak things and correct your behavior. If you keep slipping up with your nutrition, it'll get easy to lose your motivation.
GIVE IT TIME Give it time to see progress as it takes time with proper nutrition and exercise to see changes. Studies show that it usually takes 1-2 months to cement any given habit good or bad into our daily lives. It's also a good idea to take measurements, get your body fat % checked, etc. Have a friend take a picture of you as well or if you have a full length mirror, take a selfie. Since we see ourselves every day, sometimes it's a bit difficult to see the small changes. Over time though, those small changes add up into huge ones.
SET YOUR GOALS AND PLAN After you determine your goals and make a plan, find a type of exercise that you enjoy. Find a type that you can really get into and zone out and the time just seems to fly by. If you don't like jogging on a treadmill then try Zumba, boxing, or spinning or yoga. When I first started working out with weights, I absolutely HATED running/jogging on a treadmill. After listening to some CDs by Dr. Wayne Dyer, one of my favorite authors, and hearing his suggestion on, "going for morning walks between the hours of 3am-6am when the world is most quiet," I've found that I can work up a sweat power walking for 3-4 miles while enjoying nature and get a pretty damn good workout. Also I've found that in my personal experience that doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and having breakfast after getting home seem to be more effective for me then doing it later during the day.
57
HIRE A TRAINER Another good idea is to either hire a trainer. Hiring a trainer can also help keep you motivated and focused. It also helps having someone to hold you accountable and customize a workout/nutrition routine as well. Many people think that hiring a trainer can be expensive and that they won't have the money. Try seeing if the trainer has any specials or can train you in a 2-on-1 session or small group session to help with the cost. It’s all about positive reinforcement and finding someone that'll push you while your being trained. If your trainer isn't giving you the results that you are looking for, then go out and shop around for another one that can (providing your not locked into some insane longterm contract) help you achieve your goals.
WORKOUT PLAY LIST Get a good workout play list on your phone, Ipod, or other device so you can stay motivated throughout the workout. Many times the commercial gyms that I’ve been to over the years play a genre of music that you won’t like or doesn’t seem to get you motivated or ‘psyched-up. Many times we associate certain songs with positive memories and by channeling those songs, studies have shown we can improve our performance in the gym – think, "Eye of the Tiger," from the movie Rocky. Try some of my suggestions for getting and staying motivated in the gym and see which one or if a combination of several of them works for you. See ya’ll in the gym!
