“Dancing with the south FloriDa stars, season 2” Brings the glitterati to the Manor For aiDs charity
t was an evening of laughter, music, and fancy footwork, as the cream of local celebrities descended upon The Manor Restaurant and Complex in Wilton Manors on Monday, May 21, for the return of “Dancing with the South Florida Stars (DWTSFS),” a gala to benefit the not-for-profit Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation, which provides persons living with HIV/AIDS and other challenging conditions expenses-paid fitness programs and healthy lifestyle regimens, supervised by licensed and trained professionals. A “Who’s Who” of the best and brightest of local business and community leaders teamed up with the most glamorous local entertainers to rehearse their dance routines—and, in some cases, production numbers—for six weeks at the dance and aerobics studio of Island City Health and Fitness in Wilton Manors. The contestant couples included Corrie Boyd of the Sunshine Cathedral and teammate Nicole T. Philips,
musician Richard Cortez and Noel Leon, Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera of the Genesis Health Institute and life-anddance-partner Dimitri Bakoulis, Island City Eyewear’s Dr. Alan Shafer and local favorite Jennifer McClain, Mona’s barman Billy Rowan and Velvet Lenore, photographer Michael Murphy and drag host Nicolete from Lips Sunday Brunch, LGBT publishing magnate Alan Beck and dance partner Déjà Devonier, and the Boardwalk ménage a danse of Tiffany Ariagus, Krystal K, and Robby J. The winning couple for “DWTSFS: Season 2” was The Manor’s own Gary Santis and his partner, 2001 Miss Gay USofA Erika Norell, who performed their routine to the 1978 hit “Last Dance,” in a visually spectacular tribute to the late Donna Summer. (The winning performance can be viewed at youtube. com/watch?v=fY05uR_rzCk&feature=related) The “DWTSFS: S2” judges included international recording star and dance diva Pepper MaShay, whose music was featured prominently on Showtime’s “Queer

as Folk,” internationally-acclaimed female impersonator Marvin Nathan (“Full-sized Cher/Cousin Ira” from the CBS-TV hit “The Nanny”), and longtime local favorite, Misty Eyez. The tag-team hosts for the event were drag sensation and Florida Continental Elite champion Diva, and former Mr. Continental Philip Alexander. Special live performances included the “Dreamgirls” ensemble of Nicole T. Philips, Déjà Devonier, and Velvet Lenore, as well as Pepper MaShay, co-host Alexander, singing-and-playing duo Darryl Marksberry and Cary Spiegel, and others. The event was attended by 300 guests and, at press time, had raised at least $6,000 for the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. Brian Neal, the founder of the Foundation that bears his name, was moved to strong emotions as he thanked performers, guests, and contributors for their hard work, participation, and continuing support.
“You are helping a great many people change their lives,” a grateful Neal declaimed, eyes misting. His life partner, Bobby Blair, CEO of Multimedia Platforms Worldwide and Publisher of Guy Magazine and the Florida Agenda newspaper, offered praise for Neal’s dedication, and his commitment to helping others, and added, jokingly, “He [Neal] is getting better at this. There will be no more tears for Season 3.” The not-for-profit Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation assists financially-challenged persons living with HIV/AIDS and other life-altering conditions, through free gym memberships, group workout sessions, and ongoing lifestyle education classes covering all facets of living a healthy, balanced lifestyle: diet, exercise, physical and emotional well-being, positive life choices, along with coaching and mentoring from licensed and trained professionals. Keeping it Rosie: Cliff Mulcahy and John Zieba
I
t all began with a former Burger King-turnedtelemarketing call center in Wilton Manors. In 2002, business partners Cliff Mulcahy and John Zieba were looking for a location on Wilton Drive in which to open a new eatery catering to the LGBT community, as well as to local—and touristy—LGBT-friendly straights, they came across an abandoned Burger King location that was acting as a call center. Following several phone calls, the two had a location for what would become the Gayborhood’s very own Hamburger Mary’s, part of a national chain of kitschythemed burger joints. In 2006, Mulcahy and Zieba opted to take their successful franchise operation out of the corporate fold, and go independent, changing the restaurant’s name from the “generic” Hamburger Mary’s brand, to the warmer and more convivial-sounding Rosie’s, re-launching with an all new theme, menu, and specials. Today, Rosie’s Bar and Grill is one of those gathering places on Wilton Drive that you need to get to early, especially on Sunday for brunch, as the place is wall to wall with customers. The two are also very involved in the community—just ask the residents of Wilton Manors. Following Hurricane Wilma in late 2005, when electricity and other essential services were non-existent for weeks—and even months— in parts of South Florida, Zieba and Mulcahy opened their hearts, wallets, and kitchen, setting up gas grills, and feeding at no charge everyone who showed up at their parking lot. Today, in keeping with that spirit of generosity, Rosie’s and its owners support the Florida AIDS Walk, the American Red Cross, the Poverello Bowl-A-Thon, the American Cancer Society, Tuesday’s Angels, and the Human Rights Campaign, to name just a few. They also provide food every year for the Smart Ride, taking a truck and staff along the 165-mile, two-day trek from Miami to Key West, stopping at Hawk’s Cay and preparing a hot dinner for the riders and support staff, and then preparing breakfast for the teams the next morning. As

the duo prepares for their 10-year anniversary in the same location, just a stone’s throw south of Five Points, Mulcahy credits the team at Rosie’s for his and Zieba’s success. “We could not do all that we do if not for the supreme staff that we have,” he says. “We have really been blessed.” Zieba says that he and Mulcahy are constantly seeking to improve the menu and the overall experience for customers, in an effort to keep Rosie’s fresh and fun. “We just returned from the Chicago Food Show,” he says, “and we will soon be introducing an all new menu featuring many items that we found there.” He notes that the competition also keeps the partners on their business toes, and adds his kudos for the exceptional staff members who keep Rosie’s a destination on Wilton Drive, even after a decade. “When you are in a market this competitive, you have to constantly improve and re-invent yourself or you fall into a rut, and then it’s really tough,” Zieba explains. “Cliff and I have regular staff meetings, and we really listen to what the staff has to say.” There are more Rosie times to come. RYE RYE:
“GO! POP! BANG!”
S
inger Rye Rye (born Ryeisha Berrain) has been holding back the release of her debut album, “Go! Pop! Bang!” for quite some time. The Baltimore native’s 2006 single, “Shake it to the Ground,” was a success in clubs, and drew the attention of Sri Lankan singer/rapper M.I.A., who quickly made Rye-Rye her protégé. After signing to M.I.A.’s N.E.E.T. label, the album was finally put on the release schedule for March 2009, but was pushed back with little explanation. In September 2009, Rye Rye (then just 19 years old) had a baby girl with boyfriend Evan Battle. By 2010, it seemed the album would definitely be shelved, with no official word of a new release date.

guy magazine
In October 2010, Rye Rye’s new single, “Sunshine,” was released. It was chock full of adorable, sugary pop, complete with guest spot from friend and mentor, M.I.A. This release paved the way for her next single, June 2011’s “Never Will Be Mine,” featuring Robyn. “Never Will Be Mine” tossed a young Rye Rye back in the spotlight, and all signs were pointing to a successful debut album release. She went touring with Katy Perry, Robyn, and LMFAO, and released new single “Boom” on March 6. The song— which samples Europop group Vengaboys’ 1999 single, “Boom Boom Boom Boom”— climbed the charts, and continued to build interest in the release of her still eternallydelayed album. “Go! Pop! Bang!”—released finally on May 15—packs a punch. The album gets some well-deserved star power, with guest vocals from Akon, M.I.A., Robyn, Tyga, and Porcelain Black. However, Rye Rye stands out most on her solo songs. The fusion of rap, hip hop, electro, house, and bubblegum pop is executed masterfully, and Rye Rye’s bratty rhymes don’t disappoint. On “Hotter,” she raps, “Everybody love me but it ain’t about my dougie/wanna squeeze me, wanna thug me, wanna wear me like a snuggy.” The album manages to be rough, mature, and adorable, all at the same time.

GARBAGE:
making a SCENE
“NOT YOUR KIND OF PEOPLE” Once upon a time, Garbage had the world in the palm of their collective hand, enjoying a total lock on the alternative rock scene during the 1990s. combined albums Their radio-friendly singles with dark alternative style. They had every component to be a success: a little bit of grunge, a dash of rock, and a little pop sprinkled in for good measure. The music of Garbage seemed to be everywhere you’d turn from 1995 to 2001. Shirley Manson was THE female rock icon of the 90s (next to Gwen Stefani). However, time passes and bands get tired, move on, and do other things. Maybe they lose their creative juices, their libido. Whatever it was, Garbage definitely started to lose it just before their last album, 2005’s “Bleed Like Me.” By comparison, the band’s self titled debut album (1995), followed by “Version 2.0” (1998), and “Beautiful Garbage” (2001), were, and still are, amazing albums. I tried really hard to like “Not Your Kind Of People.” I went in with little in the way of expectation, but I still couldn’t help but feel like the album was forced. Not rushed, forced. Gone is the band’s aloofness and unruffled nature. The subtleties are missing, as well as the haunting hooks and pop choruses. They’re now replaced with repetition overload, cheesy synths, and questionable lyrics like, “Call me a lawyer/I want to micro-manage /I need a hit man/Get me the operator/Call me a doctor/I cannot lose control/There must be someone/A robot, a terminator.” While some of the populous may still have a soft spot for them in a 90s-nostalgia-sort-of-way, “Not Your Kind Of People” shows you, ironically, that Garbage really aren’t your kind of people anymore.

Adam & Ease By ADAM STRONG
U
ntil recently, the last time I was at Las Olas Riverfront, right next to the downtown Fort Lauderdale financial district, was right around the time Mr. Wonderful and I started seeing each other, about a year ago. Back then, in the days when Mark Lowe held nightly court, Living Room was still very much a hot and happening place to spend a Friday (gay) or Saturday (closeted) night, and the one-block-square surrounding 300 S.W. 1st Ave., included a slew of themed straight and nearlystraight establishments—Automatic Slims, Crazy Eights, Voodoo Lounge, Off the Hookah, among others—to provide before-and-after scenery. Today, all but that last one has closed it doors. On TripAdvisor.com the other day, I read the owner’s description of the once-popular Fort Lauderdale “riverside entertainment and retail complex,” which it said “offers movie theaters, games for kids, stores, a flea market, and a surplus of places to eat, all in an open-air environment.” That’s branding. The reality was that, of 51 reviews from locals, the number of “Excellent” ratings (18) was almost the same as the second highest ranking, “Poor,” which had 12 votes. Tied for third were “Very Good” and “Terrible,” each with eight votes, so you have an idea of how drastically things have changed. It’s unfortunate but true, the Old Girl ain’t what she used to be. Sadly, many factors have contributed to the decline of Riverfront from a once-great game and entertainment center (no lie: I saw “Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace” for the first—and only—time at the now resold and renamed Las Olas Riverfront Cinema, in 1999). But all that having been said, there is still a lot to do that’s fun and interesting in that seven-block stretch of Southwest 2nd Street (also called “Himmarshee”) running from the Avenue of the Arts (Southwest 7th Avenue), abutting historic Sailboat Bend, to South Andrews Avenue, on Riverfront’s east flank.
THE PLAZA AT LAS OLAS RIVERFRONT
Starting at the far west end of this zone is the Grand Dame of Fort Lauderdale’s Arts and Entertainment District, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which, although touching the aforementioned Avenue of the Arts, is so big that it takes up two blocks of real estate. Opened in 1991, the Broward Center has hosted some of the biggest names and productions in show business. It has over 3,000 seating capacity, and a season schedule that offers something for every taste, from big, flashy shows like “Jersey Boys,” “Stomp,” “Avenue Q,” and “Mamma Mia”—all of which I have enjoyed watching performed there—to more intimate, but no less compelling, performances like the “Laughing Matterz” troupe, which includes local talent and familiar faces (like Richard Cortez). Just across Himmarshee from the Broward Center is one of the largest museums of its kind in Florida (and the most-visited museum in the Sunshine State), the Museum of Discovery and Science (“MODS”), which includes the IMAX theater, home

of large-screen (and I mean LARGE) 3-D entertainment, and an amazing series of “eco-scapes,” an airplane simulator, a simulated trip to Mars, and an impressive and popular variety of native and exotic Floridian animal species on display MOD’S GREAT and available for upGRAVITY CLOCK close-and-personal inspection and demonstrations. There is a lot more to do, especially if your family includes kids. Opened in 1992, MODS’ Great Gravity Clock, at the museum’s entrance, is one of only three in the world (the others are in Mexico and Japan). Farther down 2nd Street is the heart of the Himmarshee dining and club scene, including one of Fort Lauderdale’s first watering holes, Dicey Riley’s, which sports an Irish name but a rock and roll attitude, and a staff with a downtown pedigree. I have been to Dicey’s with mixed gay/ straight groups, as well as one-on-one dates with guy friends (including Mr. Wonderful), and we were always made to feel welcome. The Poorhouse next door sports an Ybor City-like vibe, with openly gay patrons chatting at outside tables with bikers and tattoo-sporting modern primitives, and where “Scene” and “Emo”-types will look sideways at you if you inquire “Scene, or emo?”
America’s Backyard and RevolutionLIVE are still bringing in crowds, with many big performing names making the rounds on Revolution’s Upcoming Shows boards (it was only three years ago that Mother Monster herself—Lady Gaga—played the place, which once housed other well-known venues, including The Edge, the Chili Pepper, and the legendary Backstreet). For eats, try PL8 (pronounced “plate”), which has a tasty twist to the tapas concept, and Tarpon Bend continues to serve the most REVOLUTION LIVE delicious seafoodATTRACTS SOME OF THE based sandwiches of BIGGEST NAMES IN MUSIC any port city on the east coast. A night in the Arts and Entertainment corridor must end with a slice—or better still, a calzone—from the venerable Squiggy’s, where the vibe is “Goodfellas”meets-“Mean Streets,” the jokes are always at someone else’s expense, and the service is both warm and personable. It seems that with Riverfront, there’s still some life in the Old Girl, after all.

Rosie’s Bar & Grill
New Treats at an Old Favorite
S
o there we were walking up Wilton Drive on our way to have some Japanese food, when we got sidetracked by the sound of laughter coming by way of Rosie’s Bar & Grill. Not the ha-ha stuff of comedy shows, but belly-laughs the size of Cleveland. Happiness being in short supply these days, we ducked inside and made for the outside patio in search of the fun. The good time was spreading all over the place, so we pulled up chairs under a beach umbrella, and decided to chow down at this neighborhood favorite. We love the sandwich wraps at Rosie’s—especially our all-time favorite big-as-a-horse Trojan ($10.50), blending mixed greens, chopped cucumbers and tomatoes, Kalamata olives, Greek peppers, feta cheese and grilled chicken that’s all bound up in a tomato-basil tortilla. Then again we can’t forget the always-great Miss West Texas 1983 ($10.95)--grilled chicken, corn, black beans, caramelized onions, jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and housemade chipotle-honey barbeque sauce. Same tomato-basil tortilla; totally different taste. On this night, however, we felt like Big Girls—those are the larger plates found near the end of the menu. It takes quite the appetite to consume an entire Versatile Plate ($19.95), but somehow my date managed just that. Try to imagine finishing off a flat-iron steak (grilled medium rare) rubbed with Rosie’s spice blend PLUS a skewer of grilled large pink shrimp with garlic butter and Old Bay seasoning—all served on a bed of onion rings, with garlic-herb mashed potatoes, and a side of broccoli. Yes, she finished the whole platter herself, and this is after downing the Caesar salad that comes with the meal. I was hardly in a position to mock her eating exhibition, of course, since I had ordered the Coco-Loco Shrimp ($14.95)—jumbo, fried and coated in coconut. It’s served with a not-too-sweet Lady Marmalade sauce that is housemade in the back room. I opted to start with the ever-superb French onion soup ($1 extra). Decorated with dozens of colorful Japanese lanterns and the soft landscape lighting of the surrounding lush

palm plantings, there’s little at Rosie’s to remind you that at one time this was a franchise of Hamburger Mary’s. Unless, of course, you flip to the burger menu where the club’s signature meat patties show their stuff. Where but at Rosie’s could you ever find a menu item called Wilma Breathstink ($10.50). By any other name that’s a burger that’s been drenched in red wine, topped with Swiss cheese, and layered with ovenroasted garlic. If you like your meat on the spicy side, we recommend the Hellena Bun, a thick burger topped with crumbled blue cheese and fried jalapeños plus a slather of “Smack My Cheeks and Make ‘Em Rosie” sauce. No, you can’t have the recipe but you can enjoy the entrée for $11.50. Don’t eat meat? Try the Ima Gerdenia ($10.50), a Garden Burger® topped with cheddar cheese, sautéed mushrooms and “Thai Me Up” sweet chili sauce. All but the vegan Garden Burger® are made from a half-pound patty of Angus beef and served with lettuce, tomato and a side of fries or cole slaw. There are salads galore on the menu as well. If we had to pick just one, it would be the Southern Lovin’ ($12.50), a big bowl of mixed greens topped with grilled (or fried) chicken, plus caramelized pecans, bacon bits, cheddar and jack cheeses, chopped tomatoes with a honey-mustard dressing. Go early, stay late, laugh yourself silly—and tell ‘em Guy Magazine sent you.

Reddit, Done It: Rage Comics for Smartphones
I
f you’ve spent the last half dozen or so years living in a cave, on a mountain— located on a deserted island (somewhere on another planet)—then you have some excuse for having not heard of Rage Comics, or the quirky Internet genre they have spawned. When I say rage comic, I’m not referring to Sam Kinison or George Carlin, but the Internet phenomenon that centers on Rage Guy, a sort of “everyman” character who has been used in tens of thousands of individual online posts to express rage, or other common emotional states. Online contributors have created hundreds—if not thousands—of stock faces which depict easily identifiable emotions. This popularity, and the viral humorizing of shared experiences, has found application as a tool for teaching English as a second language. Although it originated in 2007 in Web forum 4chan, it gained international status after being posted at social news and information site Reddit (in fact, 4chan users have a “cultural” snootiness against their wayward spawn, Rage Guy, and often make fun of these images when unwittingly posted there—oh well, parents and kids). Last year, “fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu-” a trove of

rage comic treasurers, was among the top 20 most-subscribed tags on Reddit. For those of you who want to enjoy your “rage” with mobility, Rage Comics has apps for iPhone, iPad, and Google Play Android. Its features include “automagic panel detection,” which allows you to enjoy each comic panel separately, in all its raging glory, rather than panning across multiple panels or having to zoom onto a specific shot, as well as access to the comics that are currently most-viewed on Reddit. Like a lot of cool apps, this is one you will want to use judiciously, so there’s no danger of it losing its freshness. Rage On: Free for iPhone, iPad, and Android. Cereal Guy lives!

here was a Once Upon A Time when Your Truly made a living as a radio traffic reporter, flying over the byways of Central Florida during drive time, and advising irate drivers which alternate route to take-to-and-fro
their places of gainful employment (this predates One Magical Summer, when I understudied for a brown bear in the Moscow Circus). There’s nothing worse than being bumper-to-bumper when Nature comes calling and the Yo in the next lane is blaring the Ying Yang Twins’ remix of The Bieber’s “Boyfriend.” It’s murdering time. Mercifully, along comes CoPilot Live Premium (USA) GPS, with amenities like crisp-imaged 2-D and 3-D maps, a voice navigation system that clearly lets you know in advance of when its time tells to make a turn, and provides “local color,” noting places of interest directly on the map. The CoPilot Live Premium’s upscale navigation display is easy to follow, and permits you to effortlessly change a route with a tap-and-drag. Ride This: Free 12-month Versions for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Google Play Android. There is also a one-time $19.99 lifetime option (kind of like same-sex marriage, only cheaper).

Guy Travel By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
DOWNTOWN RALEIGH, NC
I
n case you’ve been living in a foxhole lately, things haven’t been going well for the LGBT community in North Carolina these days. First, the fair citizens of the 12th state in the Union decided to amend its constitution, declaring “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” Given that North Carolina already had a law on its books that prohibits same-sex marriage, it was a bit of overkill. On top of that, a few days later, the pastor of the Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden gave a sermon in which he advocated that lesbians and gays should be surrounded by an electrical fence and left to die off from natural attrition. The Providence Road Baptist Church (which happens to be located on Williams Street—figure that one out) is not to be confused with the Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, whose own pastor went online to declare that in his church, they offer the “same grace, mercy, and love to all people.” The natural reaction of the LGBT community is to boycott the state, and that is precisely what you should not do. Just because they’ve given gays and lesbians a drop-kick to the gonads does not mean that there isn’t much to see and do in North Carolina. The capital of Raleigh is known as the City of Oaks, and is linked with the neighboring Durham and Chapel Hill in a triangle that may not be gay, but is still very sweet. Beside the aforementioned oaks, there are over 150 incredible gardens, parks, and lakes. The most friendly and stylish hotel in town is the new Aloft (001 South Hamilton Road) in Chapel Hill. With soaring ceilings, 42-inch flat screen TVs, and complimentary Internet wireless, there’s little not to like in this modern hotel run by the Starwood chain.

HAVING FUN AT RALEIGH’S FLEX
When it’s time to go clubbing, think of Flex (2 S. West St., Raleigh). The place requires a membership, but that’s taken care of with a $5 bill. It’s the kind of place that hangs a urinal on the wall, fills it with peanuts, and calls it class. No Southern Belles here. If you want something a bit more upscale, try Legends (330 W Hargett St., Raleigh), with its live drag shows and top-notch DJs. Pecan sweet. Across the state on the border with “South Caroline,” you’ll find the second largest financial center in the U.S., otherwise known as Charlotte. It’s both the home of Bank of America and the east coast headquarters for Wells Fargo. Charlotte is nicknamed the “Queen City”—not because it’s so gay, but rather because it was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of England’s King George III. Since few in town seem to know this fact, use it as an instant entre to all the best places. Count among those: the Woodshed Lounge (4000 Queen City Dr.), where Thursday nights, the boys dress in boxer shorts to get happy hour prices on drinks (and show off their pale legs). Or better yet, try Petra’s Piano Bar & Cabaret (1919 Commonwealth Ave.), where you can sip Mint Julips between sing-alongs to Broadway anthems. They do things like that in the South. The point of this chatter is that North Carolina needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated. It’s the same thing with gays and lesbians. Go—in droves. Once they get to know us, they might just like us. Even at the Providence Road Baptist Church. Robert Elias Deaton is a world-traveling epicure who enjoys the finer things in life.

Guy Nutrition By ANDY KRESS
Obesity Crisis = Economic Crisis
T
America: Land of the Fat—and Growing
here is no doubt that America has an obesity crisis, with nearly 70 percent of the total population overweight or morbidly obese! America’s overstuffed individuals have been taking over our hospitals and health care facilities, as well as the news. Overeating, and the resulting obesity it caused, has plunged America into a health insurance and care emergency without any historical reference. The most startling concern is the economic impact that all of these obese people are having on our economy. America is changing to meet the needs of these obese persons, but at an astronomical cost, currently estimated to be $190,000,000,000. That’s $190 billion! The number one economic impact that obesity is having on America relates to our healthcare system. Rising insurance costs have skyrocketed, in order to meet the demands for providing care to these individuals over the past decade. Until 2010, employers of the obese had to bite the bullet, and pay the rising costs that obese workers ensued. But after 2010, the U.S. healthcare reform bill allowed employers to charge 30 to 50 percent more for insurance, unless employees enrolled themselves in a qualified wellness program. This helped America’s employers, as they tried to save money and stay in business during rough economic times. Obesity support groups oppose this, saying they are being “discriminated against,” but the truth of the matter is, their lifestyle choices affect more than just them. Number two on the list for economic impact are the construction costs to accommodate these plussized individuals. U.S. hospitals must rip out wallmounted toilets, and replace them with floor-mounted models, adding expenses to already rising healthcare costs. Hospitals must also rip down walls, widen door frames, and install hydraulic hoists to ease access for

guy magazine
these patients. Public seating must be widened, in addition to the seats at bus stops and airports, adding millions in costs to accommodate the obese who use these services. The cost for these changes is so high, that some businesses have collapsed under the expense, and the public burden has resulted in the reduction of transportation and other vital services. Speaking of which, number three is the explosively higher costs for transportation. The Federal Transit Administration spends hundreds of thousands of dollars testing and studying the impact of obese people on the steering and braking of public transit vehicles. Vehicles burn billions of gallons more gasoline per year hauling the increased weight over the road. The larger vehicles that haul obese passengers burn much more gas than regular vehicles. Because most vehicle parts were not made to handle such stress, they wear out, and need to be replaced more often. Yet, the reality is that almost all of this is easily corrected, and the resulting costs completely avoided. Small lifestyle changes can reduce obesity drastically. Taking the time to watch your calorie intake through reduced portion size is a simple and easy way to enjoy what you love to eat, just slightly less of it. Cutting back on unhealthy, fatty foods is another small change that adds up to a lot in the long run, saving an array of deleterious health problems and obesity. Watching your sugar intake can have a major impact on keeping your weight down—and this includes watching what you are drinking. Sugary beverages and alcohol destroy your waistline, and add to obesity. Being aware of everything you put into your mouth can curb obesity both before and after it happens. Please choose wisely.

Ask Arlen By DR. ARLEN LEIGHT
Dear Arlen:
My boyfriend of several months and I are talking about moving in together. I am HIV positive. How and when should I tell him? The anguish and guilt are eating me alive…and I do not want to lose him.
POZ-itively Scared
P.S.:
You’ve got to be kidding me, right? You’ve been dating for several months, and you guys have not discussed HIV status? Let me say right off the bat, you are NOT ready to move in together. It might be a good idea to learn to talk to one another before you learn how to live under the same roof. The question is obviously not when should you tell your boyfriend about your HIV status, but why haven’t you told him yet? If your boyfriend has a problem developing a relationship with someone who is HIV-poz, wouldn’t you want to know that before getting too involved and attached? And whether he does or does not have an issue with poz partners, what has kept him from bringing up the subject up until now? How do men in this era date for even a few weeks without talking about HIV? I have to wonder about both your level of communication as a couple, and your understanding of intimacy. In any event, I certainly hope you have been engaging in protected sex. Neither one of you need shoulder the entire blame for the delay in honest dialog, as both of you bare responsibility for the silence around this important issue. So, at this point, put away the guilt, and face the music. You will need to tell your boyfriend how you’re feeling about having to disclose your HIV status before you break the news to him. This will not only put you more at ease, it will also soften the blow of the revelation. You may want to say, “I’m feeling some anxiety about having a conversation we need to have before we commit to living together. I have to say I’m feeling anguish and guilt about the fact that I have not, up until now, talked to you about my HIV status. I guess I’ve been really afraid that if I told you I’m positive, you wouldn’t want to be with me anymore.”

|
guy magazine
There are many possible reactions your boyfriend may have. He may be positive too, and he may actually be relieved that you guys are finally talking about it. Even if he is HIV-negative, he may be relieved at finally having an open door to discuss the matter. Your boyfriend may be worried about you and your health, or his own possible exposure to HIV, or both. It is possible that he may feel deceived or betrayed by the delay in your disclosure, although he also assumes responsibility for failing to initiate this conversation. Whatever the reaction, stay focused on the feelings that are coming up for you, and for your boyfriend. At any rate, you are both clearly avoidant, and not very experienced at talking about emotionally-charged matters. Open and honest communication about feelings is the essential ingredient for intimacy, and that very much includes matters of physical and emotional well-being. Put off plans for moving in together until you learn what it really means to be in a committed intimate relationship. This is likely to be an emotional time, and you may feel that professional guidance and counseling are something that may be helpful in talking this through. Either way, I wish you the best.
Best of luck,
Arlen
