INTERVIEW

GreGG Shapiro

HE’S JUST GRAND An Interview with Singer/Songwriter Steve Grand
Steve Grand fans, and there are a lot of you, your patience has been rewarded. Steve’s full-length debut album, the aptly named All American Boy (stevegrand.com) is being released in March 2015. It might seem like it’s been a long wait, but remember, Steve first crossed our collective consciousness in 2013, less than two years ago. wisely included the title cut, the o Grand song that first introduced him to his far-
reaching and devoted followers. It also features “Stay,” another song with which the GrandFam (as his fans are known) will be familiar. Among the new material the sexy “Soaking Wet,” intoxicating “Whiskey Crime,” dance-floordestined “Better Off” and the beautiful “Back To California,” are all welcome additions to his repertoire. I had the pleasure of speaking with Steve, again, in January 2015. [Steve Grand performs at 8 p.m. on Jan. 31 at Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Gregg Shapiro: Steve, I first interviewed you in the summer of 2013, shortly after the video for your song “All American Boy” made you a YouTube sensation. You are now about to release your full-length debut album. Was it always your plan to include “All American Boy” and what does that song mean to you? Steve Grand: That was always the plan. I mean, as far as I had a plan when I first released the song. I wrote it a year before I released it, in the summer of 2012. It was an important song to me because I felt like it was the song I had been trying to write the theguymag
guymagtube
INTERVIEW longest and I hadn’t been able to. I was trying to write a song that captured that feeling of longing and unrequited love that I was all too familiar with as a young gay person growing up in a rather conservative and sheltered town. It was an important song for me, personally. Also, it’s now taken on a whole new meaning and specialness for me just because what it’s meant to my fans. I know it’s hit a lot of them in a deep and moving way and we really connect over that song. That’s what made this relationship begin. It’s a very special song for that reason as well. GS: “Better Off” is a dance-pop track that has the potential to become a club sensation. Did the song begin this way or did it evolve into a dance track? SG: First of all, I don’t really think about the production when I’m writing a song; especially for that one. I remember very clearly writing that song. It was about the lyrics and capturing the feeling I was experiencing at the time. I wrote it very quickly; in 15 minutes, I think. I was staying with a friend and I pulled out my notebook after I got off the phone with someone that I really cared about. The conversation had turned ugly and I wrote it quickly. I went to make a demo of it, shortly thereafter. I think right away I went with a darker, dance-pop sound. When I first started thinking about production, that’s just naturally the shape that the song took. GS: You make reference to Springsteen in the song “Whiskey Crime.” Where does Bruce fall in your musical influences? SG: I go through different phases. When I was writing that song, he was probably my number one. Even if artists have been out there for a while, it doesn’t mean that I’m always completely aware of them or that I understand them. I guess as you grow up and mature and find yourself thinking differently in life, certain things speak to you more. At that time, for whatever reason, when I was writing “Whiskey Crime,” I was very much affected by Bruce Springsteen and his sound and what I saw him to represent. GS: In “Whiskey Crime,” as well as in “Stay,” you make reference to a variety of adult beverages. What’s your poison? SG: I just really like whiskey [laughs]. I find share with us on guymag.net
myself being a little more particular, but I’m not a snob about it. I like the taste of whiskey. It’s like a nostalgic feeling for me. It’s what I used to drink with my friends when I was younger. I associate that taste and smell with all the things I did when I was growing up and finding my way in my very early 20s. I’m 24 now and that wasn’t that long ago, but it’s still a nostalgic thing for me. [Laughs] I realize that might sound ridiculous as I say it. I haven’t been drinking that long, but your early 20s, when you’re still in college and getting out on your own, is a very special time for a lot of people. It’s a critical and fleeting time. It’s a time in a lot of people’s live that they look back on and regard as one of the highlights, being that age. Having freedom and being able to explore it is still new and exciting. I associate that taste with all of those things. GS: So, if a liquor company approached you about using that song in an ad, is that something you would be open to? SG: Yes, I would consider it. I haven’t thought about that a lot. I don’t know if I’d have a specific one in mind right off the bat. But I’d be open to it, for sure. GS: You close the disc with the power ballad “Back To California.” To my ears, it sounds the most personal of the songs on the record. SG: It’s definitely one of the most personal songs for me. It’s a song about friendship and the intensity of adolescent friendship, especially at the time when you’re still trying to figure out who you are and what you’re about. For me, I was dealing with the crisis of trying to come to terms with whether or not I was gay and if that was okay. It was an intense and critical time for me and it’s about the friendship I was having at the time. Even now, I really do think of it as one of the works that’s closest to me and the most personal. I know that a lot of people won’t hear it that way. It’s not a song I’ve expected a lot of people to understand. It’s just a song that’s mostly fulfilling for me personally and one I’m proud of as a songwriter. GS: Because you have such a strong history with music videos, I would be remiss if I didn’t ask if there are music videos forthcoming for any of the songs on the new album. theguymag

INTERVIEW SG: Yes, there definitely are. I’m actually working on a music video for “Time.” It’s not going to be a super-big production. At first, I didn’t even plan on doing a video for it. But my fans have been so patient with waiting on the record and it (the song) seems to have struck a chord with them and so I wanted to do something for it. There’s also going to be a video for “Whiskey Crime.” I’m excited about that [laughs]. GS: I recently interviewed Ty Herndon and Billy Gilman around the time of their decisions to come out as gay. Do you have any thoughts about Herndon and Gilman and what they did? SG: Yeah, I think it’s great! I’m so happy for them. I personally know how it feels to finally make yourself free of worrying what the world is going think about who you really are. I can’t imagine going through life as long as they did and keeping that a secret; mostly for Ty Herndon. It makes me so happy and I really applaud them both. It makes me happy to see more and more people coming out in all industries. Even in the music industry, we’ve always looked at country as being conservative and a hard place to comeout. It shows that we really are making progress. I can imagine that they are having an effect on many lives, especially many young lives. I only think it’s a good thing I’m very happy for them. GS: There’s been a fuss made over the recent Justin Bieber/Calvin Klein underwear ad. If you were approached by Calvin Klein or another underwear manufacturer to model their products, would you do it at this stage in your career? SG: I would consider it. I haven’t thought about that [laughs]. It’s not something I would totally discount. There’d have to be a lot of good reasons to do it, obviously. I think it’s cool. I love the whole Calvin Klein legacy, specifically with them. I like those kinds of things, so I would definitely consider it. GS: Do you have any interest in acting in film or on television and have you had any offers for roles? SG: I do have an interest in that. It’s something I do want to get into eventually, but I’d first like
38

to establish myself as an artist a little more. My album’s not even out yet and I have no idea what’s going to happen with it at this point. So, we’ll have to wait and see. I have gotten some offers here and there. For the longest time, I’ve been maintaining that I’m working on my album. There have been a few relatively small projects that I’ve been asked to be a part of or been considered for. I’ve played around with the idea. I’m just going to have to wait and see how it works out in terms of what happens with my album coming out and touring and being busy with that. That’s going to come first. But I would definitely like to act. I was in all the musicals in high school and I really enjoyed that. I love making music videos. I’m a very visual person. I love a good aesthetic and I love being a part of that whole thing. That’s what’s so cool about doing what I do. Adding the visual element to the music is one of my favorite things. It’s a great time for that now with YouTube being so important for the music industry. GS: Do you think you might have a Broadway musical in you or if you were offered the chance to be in one that you would do it? SG: I would definitely consider it. It wouldn’t be the first thing that would come to my mind or specifically seek out. I’m not sure that I would write a musical. I’m more likely to make an album or write a screenplay. For some reason, musicals don’t necessarily speak to me more than a regular film or play. GS: You will be performing at Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 31. Have you performed in the South Florida region before? SG: I’ve performed at Sunshine Cathedral. I really loved it. It was one of the best audiences I’ve had. Of course, I appreciate everyone that comes out. But they were especially friendly and warm. They were a part of the show. We were all in it together. I don’t necessarily always feel that way, but it really did feel that way, so it was extra special for that reason. I love South Florida. I want to get the hell out of Chicago with this weather [laughs]. I’m looking forward to it. theguymag

MEDIA
The Covers that Stood Out in 2014 by
GeorGe Dauphin
o
2014 was an extraordinary year for advances in LGBT equality, and publication covers reflected that progress. Straightlaced Time Magazine surprised everyone by putting transgender icon Laverne Cox on its cover; out NFL star Michael Sam was one of the “Men of the Year,” according to GQ Magazine, a publication that has traditionally gone out of its way to pronounce its hetero credentials; and Neil Patrick Harris and Jonathan Groff were ubiquitous, deservedly so. The rest of the media suddenly “discovered” out soccer player Robbie Rogers, but only after Guy Magazine pronounced him as one of the “World’s Sexiest Soccer Stars” (Issue 242). In the
46
share with us on guymag.net
same issue, we featured Christiano Ronaldo, and it seems American publications have been paying a lot more attention to him since then. Well, that may be a stretch in tooting our own horn. But I humbly include some of the Guy Magazine and Agenda covers with those of the masters. By the same token, I can’t be praising my own work without recognizing outstanding covers by our competitors. Instinct, Attitude, Fenuxe, the Advocate, OUT are just some of the LGBT publications that have had consistently produced great images on their front pages. The same can be said for mainstream publications. Besides the Laverne Cox cover, Time Magazine again pulled a surprise by choosing
theguymag
theguymag
the Ebola fighters for a two-version Person of the Year cover. Esquire, Details, Men’s Health, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine and Miami New Times were among those that never disappoint. Who would have thought of using a photo of Barbra Streisand from the 60s for a magazine cover in 2014? New York Magazine did. Brilliant! And, of course, I include the famous... or infamous... cover of Kim Kardashian’s derriere. Because I have to. If that doesn’t “stand out,” nothing does. TRAVEL
Location Location Location BY RICK KARLIN
o
While Los Angeles may claim to be the film and television capital of the world, South Florida is no slouch in those departments. Our warm weather, tropical setting and architecture continue to draw film and television crews. From as early as flickering black and white images of the Spanish American War in 1898 through such recent films and television shows as Dexter, Burn Notice and the recent Nickelodeon kids’ show Every Witch Way, Florida is a favorite for film location shoots. You might even say that films and television shows set in South Florida helped define those areas. Sure there were college kids coming to Fort Lauderdale for spring break long before Connie Francis warbled the title tune to Where the Boys Are, but that movie cemented our town’s reputation as the spring break capitol. There’s no doubt Miami Vice helped revive the titular city’s reputation as the home for cool (Golden Girls not so much). With the rest of the country in deep freeze for a few months, why not spend some time exploring former film locations? In many cases the landmarks have disappeared, but a surprising number of them remain, more or less intact. The following locations are all within a few minute’s drive of Wilton Manors (and in one case, actually located in the heart of WilMa), making it possible to visit them all in a single day. Start with the previously mentioned, Where the Boys Are, which held its world premiere at The Gateway Theater (1820 E. Sunrise), where you can still catch first-run and art-house flicks. Younger readers may not know of this film, but you should watch it for camp value alone. Then you’ll better appreciate the fact that you can still head up to the second level of the Elbo Room (241 Fort Lauderdale Blvd.) where many of the movie’s scenes were filmed. While the Yankee Clipper may have been renovated and became the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel and now B Ocean Resort (1140 Seabreeze Blvd.), The Wreck Bar, located in the basement of
48

the boat-shaped hotel, still has windows looking into its pool. The scenes filmed there are among the most memorable of the film. That wasn’t the bar’s only movie appearance, it was also featured in the 1999 movie Analyze This. Another spot featured in the movie, but unfortunately no longer around, was The Marlin Beach Hotel (17 S. Ft Lauderdale Beach Blvd.). It also featured a bar with windows out into the pool, and many claim the movie’s pool scene was filmed there. Not true, though a minor scene was filmed using the hotel’s restaurant. It is the height of irony that, for a movie titled, Where the Boys Are, that about 10 years after the movie was released, it became the biggest gay hotel in South Florida and was notorious for its pool parties on the “Poop Deck.” Now it is Marriott’s BeachPlace Towers and has housed a Sonic and Da Big Kahuna, among other restaurants. In nearby Davie, play a round of golf where Bill Murray filmed Caddyshack. The fictional Bushwood Country Club was actually Rolling Hills Golf & Tennis Resort, which has since been renamed Grande Oaks Golf Club (3201 West Rolling Hills Circle), and continues to operate as a private country club. The only way you can get a tee time (unless you are or know a member) is to book a room in one of five area resorts that have a deal set up with Grande Oaks. The green fees are currently $100 for a round, gophers not included. In Plantation, you can visit the ‘high school,’ where Ben Stiller’s character doesn’t quite make it to the prom with Mary (Cameron Diaz) in There’s Something About Mary. The high school is actually Plantation City Hall (400 Northwest 73rd Ave.). Marley and Me filmed mostly in Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. Marley’s house is located at 1015 N 17 Ct. in Hollywood, Fl and one of the scenes where Marley escapes was filmed in front of Rosie’s Gourmet Italtheguymag

ian Ices (1090 N. Federal) and across the street at Jack’s Diner. The movie also used location shots at the Sun-Sentinel building and on Las Olas, where Marley escapes from the car. Additional scenes were also filmed at Haulover Beach and the Coconut Grove Convention Center. Of course, the deliciously bad Striptease can’t be overlooked. Although scenes in the film’s strip club, The Eager Beaver, were filmed primarily at Flix nightclub in Pompano Beach (the now shuttered Fuji Sushi at 4051 N. Federal), Moore’s character lived in a run-down trailer park. The producers chose the Middle River Trailer Park, right in the heart of Wilton Manors, as the home for Demi Moore’s character. They found it in such disrepair that they didn’t think the audience would believe that she lived there, so they spruced up the park, share with us on guymag.net
for the film. The collection of falling down trailers, was located off Northeast 24th St. Even though the city tried to condemn the property, it was the gentrification by the LGBT community that finally spelled its demise. The owners were behind in taxes and couldn’t afford to bring the property up to code, so they were forced to sell the land. A group of investors offered to buy the land to build a gay resort. The economy tanked, so did those plans. Eventually the Belle Isle condo development took over the majority of the space. In our next column we’ll look at some more film sites throughout the state, making for a day trip or a long weekend of exploring film locations.

Into the Woods o Stephen Soundheim’s classic 1986 Broadway musical Into the Woods will be playing at the Adirenne Arsht Center for the next three weeks. An array of fairy tale characters are brilliantly braided through an original story about a baker’s barren wife and a witch’s evil curse. A lyrically poignant and emotionally rich score emphasize the musical’s varied themes on the importance of fairy tales, the lack of “evil and good” in a chaotic world, and the personal journey to parenthood. 7:30 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

THE WEEK Saturday
1/31
Billy Joel o The consummate singer/songwriter takes the stage at the American Airlines Arena to perform all of his classic 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s hits. From “Piano Man” to “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” Billy Joel defines the image of the polished pianist. Having sold over 150 million albums globally, Billy Joel is by far one of the most accomplished singers in the world. Personally, Billy Joel has battled both depression and alcoholism and, thus, became a committed proponent of teen suicide prevention. The song “You’re Only Human (Second Wind)” is a message to help prevent teen suicide. 8:00 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.
Six Characters in Search of an Author o Luigi Pirandello’s absurdist Italian play revolves around the arrival of six strange people to an acting company’s rehearsal of The Rules of the Game. The play progresses in true absurdist fashion: illogically and metatheatrically. The adaptation playing at the Wertheim Performing Arts Center promises to heighten the comedy between the melodrama and contemporary skepticism. Reality and what makes up an audience’s perceptions are the central themes. 8:00 p.m. Wertheim Performing Arts Center. 10910 SW 17th St. Miami. 33172.

Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience o JK Rowling’s imaginative adventure into magic, friendship, and true evil took seven long books (and eight movies) to fully tell. BBC Television hosts Daniel Clarkshon and Jefferson Turner are taking it upon themselves to conquer the task of telling the entire tale in 70 madcap minutes. The parody will include multiple costume changes, silly props, witty one-liners, hummable song, ands, of course, lots and lots of wizardry. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

popularity. They posted piano and cello renditions of popular songs and classical music on the website. From there they were signed by Sony and released four major-label albums: The Piano Guys, The Piano Guys 2, A Family Christmas, and Wonders. Listen for hits by Taylor Swift, One Republic, Michael Jackson, Mozart, and even Beethoven. 7:30 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Bisayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

Celebrity Autobiography o Unless written by a noteworthy comedian, most celebrity autobiographies leave much to be desired. The play Celebrity Autobiography understands the comedic quality of such cheesy material. In this play the cast acts out celebrity memoirs, word for word, from the likes of Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Barbara Streisand, and more. Tony Award-winning Broadway star Gary Beach is joined by Drama Desk Award winners Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyfel. Lainie Kazan (understudy of Ms. Streisand during the Broadway run of Funny Girl) will also be in the cast. 7:30 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach. 33401.

o Liza Minelli’s Sally Bowles may always be the greatest incarnation of the legendary “fruit fly,” yet Christopher Isherwood’s musical still packs a wallop no matter who’s in the lead. A feverish take on the hedonistic Weimar Republic between the wars, Cabaret not only is notable for its introduction of LGBT characters in 1966 but also for its classic Fred Ebb/John Kander score. Some of the songs now a part of the American musical theater canon include “Maybe This Time,” “Money,” “Tomorrow Belongs to Me,” and the title track. 8:00 p.m. Broward Stage Door Theatre. 8036 W. SCREEN SAVOR
A Taste for Drama By GreGG Shapiro
o
Jennifer Aniston has been working towards the performance she gives as chronic-painsufferer and pharma addict Claire in Cake (Cinelou) for a number of years. She certainly showed her acting chops in indies such as Friends With Money and The Good Girl, so consider Claire the icing on the, well, cake. In Cake, Claire has the disfiguring scars to show from the horrific car accident that killed her young son. Other scars, invisible to the naked eye, are increasingly evident. There’s the dissolution of her marriage to Jason (Chris Messina), her complex relationship with her housekeeper/enabler Silvana (Adriana Barazza), and her open hostility towards those trying to help her, including support group leader Annette (Felicity Huffman) and physical therapist Bonnie (Mamie Gummer). Oh, and there’s also the ghost of late support group member Nina (Anna Kendrick). Clair, who struggles to separate her dreams and hallucinations from real life, lives in a drug-induced haze, so her increasingly erratic behavior gets her in all sorts of trouble, including seeking out and beginning a relationship Roy (Sam Worthington) and Casey (Evan O’Toole), the husband and son Nina left behind. Like Julianne Moore, Aniston blossoms under the direction of queer filmmakers (see The Object of My Affection and The Good Girl), and she does so working with Daniel Barnz. Cake is not an easy movie to digest, but Aniston frosts it with a American Sniper (Courtesy of Warner Bros.) career-high performance.

American Sniper (WB) was not the best movie of 2014. Nor does it deserve the Oscar nomination for Best Picture that it received. (Say something nice, say something nice) it is, however, a vast improvement over Clint Eastwood’s other 2014 stinker of a movie, the junk-box jukebox movie musical Jersey Boys (now that feels better). Based on the book by the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper in an almost Oscar-worthy performance), American Sniper moves back and forth in time; arriving at its inevitable tragic ending in February 2013. In the first few minutes, we observe Kyle poised to shoot and kill an Iraqi woman and child, seen carrying a grenade, in Fallujah, on one of his four tours of duty. For the record, during Kyle’s four tours, he racked up 1,000 days in the country and more than 160 kills. There’s a quick flashback to his childhood where he impressed his father with his hunter’s instincts when he killed a deer and later defended his brother from a schoolyard bully. Then we’re back to Kyle catching a girlfriend cheating on him, enlisting in the SEALS as a “pissed-off patriot,” training rigorously, meeting Taya (Sienna Miller) and falling in love, and then the events of 9/11. Shipped off to Iraq Kyle proves himself to his commanding officers and rises through the ranks to become the character described in the title. For all its pretense of being about the toll war takes on those sent off to battle, American Sniper is, at its heart a movie that celebrates war (did you expect something different from war horse Eastwood?). Good guys versus bad guys, body count, blood and gore, bullets and bombs – you get the picture. At 40 minutes shorter, the misguided American Sniper would probably have been right on target.
o
If you were a gay man in NYC in 1981, a city far grittier and more dangerous than it is now, the news that probably caught your attention was the story in The New York Times about the discovery of the “rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals.” But, as A Most Violent Year (A24/Participant), the new film from J.C. Chandor (director of Margin Call, starring out-actor Zachary Quinto) indicates, the rest of New York had other things on its mind, including the regular hijacking and theft of tankers carrying heating oil and other petrol products. Beginning with the commandeering of a truck at a toll booth, and the brutal assault of driver Julian (Elyes Gabel), A Most Violent Year focuses on what promises to be a potentially prosperous year for refinery owner Abel (Oscar Isaac), an immigrant trying to attain the American dream, and his wife Anna (Jessica Chastain channeling Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle), the daughter of a Brooklyn gangster. Striking a deal with Hasidic businessman Josef (Jerry Adler) to purchase another refinery, Abel pays a portion of the purchase price with his life savings and then must come up with the rest from various sources in order to close the deal. But that will be easier said than done as everything that can possibly go wrong does. Abel’s business is under investigation by District Attorney Lawrence (David Oyelowo) who is in the process of bringing a case against the company. Abel’s competitors, including Peter (Allesandro Nivolo), are as cutthroat as possible. Driver Julian goes missing after thwarting another hijacking by using an unregistered weapon. If that wasn’t enough, the bank on which Abel was depending for a loan backs out of the deal. A Most Violent Year is nothing if not a story of perseverance. There is violence and death (not to mention a high-speed truck chase) and corruption. But there is also honesty and dedication and the desire to help others (while helping yourself, of course). Filmmaker Chandor has become a master of suspense (see All Is Lost) and A Most Violent Year is no exception.

The Fitness Lifestyle, The First Step Toward Living Forever!
o
Perhaps it’s been years since you set foot in a gym. Work has been so crazy that you can’t find the time to get away. Maybe you’ve suffered an injury that has kept you away from training for a while. Perhaps working out and getting into shape is something new to you and you just don’t know where to begin. Whether you can relate to any or all of the above, the time is now to get up, get moving and get started. Why? Because you deserve to get the most out of the life you’ve been given! The first step toward investing in the fitness lifestyle is to consult your physician. If you haven’t had a thorough check-up in years, the time is now. While such conditions as hypertension, Type II diabetes and high cholesterol can only be improved with regular exercise, it is essential to get your doctor’s clearance first. Next, chart your current height and weight. Decide how many pounds you need to drop – your doctor can help you with this. If you have to lose weight, it is recommended to do this gradually, like no more than three pounds per week tops. Invest in an accurate scale, one that will tell you body fat percentage. Typically most males under 50 need to be below 20% and guys over 50, no more than 22%. The fitness lifestyle demands certain changes in your nutritional plan for you to be successful. Start to eat clean and healthy. Stay away from monster meals and portions. Eat 5 or 6 smaller meals throughout the day. Plan each meal with a 3-2-1- ratio of carbs, protein and fat. Cut refined sugar, processed foods and meats and yes, keep a limit on booze consumption. Eat a bigger healthy breakfast and a smaller, leaner supper. Stop mindless snacking, and late night grazing. Next, you’ve got to be completely honest with yourself concerning your body image. Here’s how to go about it. First, get a full length mirror if you don’t already have access to one. Secondly, buy a flexible tape measure available in the sewing department of most stores. Thirdly, take off all your clothes and be
60

ready to be perfectly honest with yourself, as you stand naked in front of the mirror. Make mental notes of areas or muscle groups that need work. Don’t be overly harsh or critical, you’ve also got some good points to your physique, note them also, i.e. broad shoulders, beefy forearms, etc. Take note of your posture as well and how you can look better by simply standing straighter. Aware now of the raw material you’ve got to work with, use the flexible tape and measure each muscle group. • Measure your neck right under the Adam’s apple all the way around. • The shoulder measurement is taken at the widest point. • Measure the chest across the nipples while breathing normally. • Measure upper arms around the widest point without flexing your biceps or tensing triceps. • Forearm measurements should be taken at the widest part of the arm below the elbow. • The waist is measured at the naval. • Hip measurements should be taken across the widest part of the buttocks. • Calves and thighs should be measured at their widest point. These assessments can be done solo or with a friend. Remember, these measurements will establish a benchmark against which you can gauge future progress.
