SCREEN SAVOR
Teen Trouble By GreGG Shapiro
o
As with his nuanced 2004 masterwork Mysterious Skin, queer filmmaker Gregg Araki’s latest, White Bird in a Blizzard (Magnolia Home Entertainment), now available on Blu-ray, is the writer/director’s adaptation of a novel. In this case, it’s Laura Kasischke’s minor book of the same title. In late 1988, Katrina (Shailene Woodley) was 17 when her mother Eve (Eva Green) disappeared. As Katrina, a former fat girl describes it, just as she “was coming into her body,” her mother “stepped out of hers.” Eve left her car in the garage, didn’t leave a note and simply vanished. Of course, she’d been threatening to do so for years. Unhappily married to Brock (Christopher Meloni), Eve was becoming increasingly despondent and her once loving relationship with Kat turned competitive and full of resentment. A typical teenager, Kat thought nothing of disrespecting her mother, which only made matters worse. After Eve caught Kat and malapropism-spouting boy next door/pothead Phil (Shiloh Fernandez) having sex, her already strange behavior gets weirder, until the day she goes missing. Brock and Kat enlist the aid of Detective Scieziesciez (Thomas Jane) and Kat starts to see therapist Dr. Thaler (Angela Bassett). During her therapy sessions, Kat tells the doctor about her recurring nightmares involving Eve and a snowstorm. These dreams are some of the least subtle uses of foreshadowing you will ever see, especially when the giant, malfunctioning freezer in the basement is introduced a short time later. Essentially a boring murder mystery, White Bird in a Blizzard would be a total loss if it wasn’t for the big reveal – someone is having an affair, but you might not guess who. The movie follows Kat to college in the early 1990s and back home again where she hangs out with besties Beth (Gabourey Sidibe) and Mickey (Mark Indelicato of Ugly Betty fame), whom Beth describes as “a fat chick in a skinny gay body,” and continues sleeping with Detective Scieziesciez. What at first appears to be another Araki movie about adults taking advantage of teens (as with Mysterious Skin) turns out to

be something else entirely. No one is at their best here; not Woodley, not Meloni, not Sidibe, and not even Araki. We’ve come to expect more from the director, as well as some of his cast members, which is especially disappointing because this White Bird never takes wing. Blu-ray special features include deleted and extended scenes, commentary and interviews with Araki and Woodley, and more.

Based on the inexplicably popular Y/A novel series by Stephenie Meyer, The Twilight Saga (Summit), newly reissued in a triple DVD + digital extended editions set, is essentially the story of baby butch Bella’s (non-actress Kristen Stewart) evolution from morose high school junior to full-blown vampire-obsessed bride-to-be by graduation. Untrue Blood would have been a better name for the trilogy. Relocating from her mother’s house in sunny and dry Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father in grey and damp Forks, Washington, in 2008’s Twilight, Bella is going to have to deal with more than just being the new kid at school. Her police chief father Charlie (Billy Burke) isn’t the kind of dad to hover, leaving Bella to her own devices. She seems to have her choice of potential beaus, including classmate Mike (Michael Welch of LGBT film fest fave Boy Meets Girl) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner), who goes to school on the reservation. But Bella is feeling it for Edward (Robert Pattinson), of the notorious Cullen clan. After an awkward meeting in biology class, Bella and Edward discover they have chemistry, leading to a succession of encounters, including the revelation of revelation of Edward’s true identity (let’s just say he’s been 17 for more than a hundred years). Edward and his “family,” including “father” Carlisle (Peter Facinelli), are “vegetarian” vamps (feeding on animals, not humans), but their true selves are hidden from the townsfolk. All of this is set against a backdrop of a series of murders committed by a trio of especially evil vampires, including James (Cam Gigandet, in this case the poor-man’s Ryan Kwanten) and Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), who are determined to get to Bella once they discover her relationship with Edward and that he has not turned her. Sheesh, as if being a teenager isn’t traumatic enough, imagine having bloodthirsty vamps on your trail. Plus, with all this bloodlust, is it wrong to wonder what happens theguymag

The Twilight Saga (Courtesy of Summit)
when Bella menstruates? More than anything, this first flick in the series is notable for fully launching several careers, including Anna Kendrick’s (she plays Bella’s friend Jessica). It also feels the most like a teen flick (see the “prom drama”), and the credit for that goes to director Catherine Hardwicke, who already had a couple of other teen-oriented films (Thirteen and The Lords of Dogtown) under belt before helming this one. Of the three films, it’s the second one, 2009’s Twilight: New Moon, that is the worst, which is disappointing considering that it was directed by Chris Weitz (About A Boy). An increasingly femmy Bella, at 18, is so busy obsessing over age and aging, that she completely misses the opportunity to play Jacob who has metamorphosed into a porny, muscled, tattooed boytoy. Although the gayest moment of the series occurs in New Moon, after Jacob’s teen-wolf secret is exposed and he tells Bella that he was born that way and it isn’t a lifestyle choice. However, a unsubtle Romeo & Juliet starcrossed lovers theme, as well as the mediocre special effects involving the (were)wolf pack, threatens to sink the whole thing. The third installment, Eclipse finds slightly less sullen graduating from high school senior Bella accepting her brooding true love Edward’s share with us on guymag.net
marriage proposal in exchange for his promise to “change” (read “kill”) her so that they can be together for eternity. Wait, let’s get this straight. Mormon author Stephenie Meyer thinks it’s all right for white trash teenagers to marry vampires, but LGBT folks should be deprived of the same expression of love and commitment. Maybe she should have called her saga Twit-light. Eclipsing its predecessors, Eclipse has plenty of skin, courtesy of stud (wolf) cub Taylor Lautner (who continues to do most of his acting with his abs) as Jacob, and his pec pack of wolves, although the wolves’ pelts are wearing thin. The scary factor is also ratcheted up, not only with the lingering presence of the ruthless Jane (Dakota Fanning) and her creepy crew, but also the bent-on-revenge Victoria (now played by Bryce Dallas Howard), her boy toy Riley (Xavier Samuel) and his army of merciless newborn vamps. Eclipse also gets points for cranking up the humor. That’s right, you will most likely find yourself laughing out loud on several occasions, and that appears to be the way that screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg intended it. For not taking itself too seriously and doing it in a respectable couple of hours, Eclipse is actually recommended viewing. theguymag

TRAVEL
Location Shoot BY RICK KARLIN
o
Florida has a rich history as a center of the film industry. During the silent picture era there were a number of studios headquartered in Florida, in fact Jacksonville was known as the “Tinseltown of the East.” It was home to Lubin Studios and Metro Studios, which later merged to become the first M in MGM. In our last column we looked at movie locations in and around the Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale area. In this column we expand the scope to include those sites within a few hours’ drive, close enough to make it a day trip. One need look no farther than Miami, which has served as a back-drop for hundreds of TV shows and movies. In fact Miami’s Villa Vizcaya (3251 South Miami Ave.) has appeared in more films than most members of the Academy of Motion Pictures. In Iron Man 3, it was the home of super-villain Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce). It has also appeared in Ace Ventura – Pet Detective, Absence of Malice, Airport ’77 and Any Given Sunday, among many others. The Fontainebleau (4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach), now a Hilton Resort, has also served as the location for a number of films. In The Bodyguard, Whitney Houston’s character performs at an AIDS charity benefit at the venue. It’s also where Sean Connery’s James Bond creates problems for a crooked poolside card game in Goldfinger. Later Jerry Lewis created a different kind of havoc throughout the hotel in The Bellboy. Going farther back, older readers who remember the TV series Flipper, which ran from 1964-67, no doubt fantasized about Brian Kelly, Luke Halpin and Tommy Nordin (Porter Ricks and his sons Sandy and Bud) who spent most of their scenes in tight bathing suits. The series was filmed in the old Ivan Tors studios, now owned by the British based Greenwich Studios (12100 Ivan Tors Blvd., Miami). In Bad Boys, Will Smith’s character lived in a stylish apartment building (2030 Park Ave., Miami Beach). The film’s police station is actually the Dade County Courthouse (73

W. Flagler, Miami). Madame Secretary star Téa Leoni’s character Julie Mott, dives into the pool at the Biltmore Hotel (1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables) after witnessing a double murder. The title character of Dexter (Michael C. Hall) lives in the “Palm Terrace” apartment complex, which in reality is Bay Harbor Club (1155 103rd St., Miami). In the first season, a dead body is discovered in the pool of the Seven Seas Motel (5940 Biscayne Blvd.). The popularity of the place actually increased after that episode aired and it was used in as a site for a number of productions. South Beach’s art deco hotels have been the backdrop for many films and television shows. The best known of which is the Carlyle Hotel (1250 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach), which served as the titular nightclub in the Robin Williams/Nathan Lane hit, The Birdcage. There’s Something About Mary is mostly set in Rhode Island, but the film’s most famous scene where Cameron Diaz’ character uses Ben Stiller’s semen as hair gel was filmed at the Cardozo Hotel (1300 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach). The hotel was also featured in Frank Capra’s 1959 A Hole In The Head. In the same
theguymag
guymagtube
film, Matt Dillon’s and Jeffrey Tambor’s characters meet at Big Pink Restaurant (157 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). In Analyze This, Robert Deniro’s character’s wedding (his fiancé was played by Lisa Kudrow) is set at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort (9701 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour). In Ace Ventura, Jim Carrey’s title character lives in decidedly less regal digs, The Campton Apartments (1455 Washington Ave.). Other neighborhood spots make appearance include the Cameo Theatre (1445 near Espanola West, Miami Beach) now home to rock concerts. Heading out to the Keys, there are a number of film sites. Of course, the majority of Key Largo was filmed on the Warner Brothers lot, only the opening and a few exterior “atmosphere shots were filmed there. However, you will find The African Queen there (and we don’t mean Kitty Meow!) In the Humphrey Bogart/Katherine Hepburn classic the boat blows up at the end. However it was all film magic. It’s been berthed outside the Holiday Inn Key Largo (99701 Overseas Hwy.) for more than 30 years. Before
visiting, call to check, as it is sometimes sent to participate in boat parades. Before you get to Key West, you’ll have to cross the Seven Mile Bridge, the site of the big chase scene finale of Schwarzenegger’s True Lies. In License to Kill, Timothy Dalton’s Bond and CIA buddy and groom to be Felix Leiter (David Hedison) parachute to the Leiter’s wedding at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church (1010 Windsor Lane, Key West). It wouldn’t be a Bond movie without a chase scene and this one begins at Key West International Airport. When M revokes Bond’s “license to kill,” he does so at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum (907 Whitehead St.). Later scenes, supposedly set in the Barrelhead Bar in The Bahamas, were actually filmed at what is now Thai Island Restaurant (711 Eisenhower Dr.). In our next, and regrettably my final column, we wrap up our series about Florida’s film locations, looking at places a bit farther down the road with trips that will require at least a long weekend to cover.

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK
Jon Marante
Bartending—and Goaltending—with a Grin by
Cliff Dunn
o Jon Marante is all about goals— setting, making, and tending them, to be precise. The Miami-born special events bartender at Rosie’s Bar and Grill in Wilton Manors recalls one of the first ones he set: “I couldn’t wait to ‘come out’,” he says with a laugh. “I attended a small, very conservative, non-denominational Christian school in southwest MiamiDade County. Once I graduated, I was out—and ‘out’.” The other goals that figure largely in his young life involve balls—the ones used to play the sport of soccer (or association “football,” as it’s known to the world’s other 6.7 billion people), a game he has played—predominantly as a goaltender and on the field’s “left wing”—in matches held across the country, including New York, Texas, Las Vegas, and North Carolina. “I’ve played soccer my entire life,” Marante says. “I played in high school, and my plan—my ‘goal’, if you will, originally was to play on a college scholarship. “I love soccer. It’s 90 minutes of me losing myself, enjoying myself,” he enthuses. “Whatever stresses I have, whatever problems, they go away when I play.” That enthusiasm translated to a spot on one of the nation’s most successful gay soccer teams, Fort Lauderdale-based United Football Club (UFC), a team which went all the way to last year’s Gay Games, which were held from August 9 to August 16, 2014 in Cleveland, Ohio. “It was very emotional, getting to play in the Gay Games,” Marante reflects. “On the first day, we won all our matches, we realized that we had something going on—and it sank in that we had a chance to take the top prize.” Marante and UFC performed so well, in fact, that they played their way into the finals. A stunning achievement, although it ended
in disappointment for the South Florida team, which finished second to the San Francisco Spikes. “It was a heart-breaker,” Marante admits, “but in the end we had the best time, and I made lifelong friends who I stay in touch with.” (The miracle of Facebook.) Despite his athletic prowess, Marante owns a humble attitude and a self-effacing charm that makes you want to envelope him in a hug (okay—that’s not the only reason you want to hug him). “When I moved to Fort Lauderdale, I discovered that I had an accent,” he says, half-jokingly. “It made me self-conscious at first, but I got used to it.” (For the record, I can’t detect an accent.)

The five words he uses to describe himself are “trustworthy,” “openminded,” “fun,” and “workhorse—if that counts as a word.” Behind the bar, he says the “drink to impress” he recommends is the classic Manhattan (a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters), which he prefers to serve “stirred, not shaken.” I ask him if there’s one thing he would change about himself. “I trust people too easily,” he admits. “I wish I wasn’t as gullible, and instead of giving people the benefit of the doubt from the get-go, I wish I was one of those people who required that trust be earned instead of just given.” But as Marante acknowledges, it’s all in the game.

the group a Bet Hard Rock Performance Grammy Award and a Best New Artist MT Video Music Award. Their style fuses heavy metal, funk, jazz, and hip hop into an eclectic, critically-acclaimed mix. The group’s early success ended in 1995 with the band’s dissolution, but a reunion in the late 2000s has spawned a latter-career resurgence. Tonight they will be performing all of the nostalgic hits at Culture Room. 8:00 p.m. Culture Room. 3045 N. Federal Highway. Fort Lauderdale. 33306.
Jamie Kennedy o Jamie Kennedy’s career began in the late 1990s when he played Randy Meeks in the Scream film series. From there, movies like Son of the Mask paid the bills but never allowed him the fame he sought. The Jamie Kennedy Experiment offered cult popularity and from that success his star value rose. Today, Kennedy is considered one of the most popular comedic actors working in Hollywood. Recent films include The Hungover Games, The After, and Kingdom. Tonight he performs his irreverent comedy at the Improv. 8:00 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

Harry Connick Jr. o One of the best-selling male artists in the United States, Harry Connick, Jr. is known as much for his dashingly handsome looks as for his smooth vocals. He has earned three Grammy Award and two Emmy Awards. He is also an avid proponent for the gay community—he played Dr. Leo Markus for multiple seasons on Will & Grace. Some of his best-selling albums are When My Heart Finds Christmas and Only You. His hits include “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Avalon,” and “It Had to Be You.” 8:00 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.
The Tempest o Shakespeare’s famous comedy The Tempest involves a manipulative Prospero’s machinations to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place. The play is as metaas any play has any right to be, constantly drawing links between Prospero’s “art” and theatrical illusion. Shakespeare’s final work also shows a writer interpreting the human soul in the unique and complex way that only Shakespeare can. British-American touring company Aquila Theatre performs this classic work at the Kravis Center. 7:30 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach. 33401.

She will be performing with Susie Essman—the hilarious comedienne who played eccentric Susie Greene for eight seasons of the critically-acclaimed Larry David series Curb Your Enthusiasm. 8:00 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd. West Palm Beach. 33401.

INTERVIEW
Eight Arms to Hold You An Interview with Octopus Playwright Steve Yockey
GreGG Shapiro
islandcitystage.org), in January 2015.
o
Easily one of Island City Stage’s most ambitious undertakings, Steve Yockey’s Octopus, directed by Andy Rogow, contains adult themes and nudity. Oh, and there’s also that “ravenous sea monster from the ocean floor,” the leak and the pool of water on the set. Essentially the story of the potential dangers facing the relationship of a contemporary, young gay couple (played by Christopher Mitchell and Craig Moody) and how they deal with it, Octopus, is one of Yockey’s 15 full-length plays. I spoke with Yockey about Octopus, making its South Florida premiere through March 1 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Drive in Fort Lauderdale (more info at

Gregg Shapiro: Steve, was theater and going to the theater something that was part of your upbringing or did you come to it later in life? Steve Yockey: It was never really a part of my life growing up. Early on, I was very musically inclined, various instruments, so that’s where most of my attention landed. GS: When did you know that you wanted to be a playwright? SY: I wrote my first “play,” (although calling it that is a stretch) when I was 24 or 25, but I’m not sure I knew I wanted to be a playwright, knew what that meant. I just had these stories theguymag

INTERVIEW to tell and my brain thinks in terms of spectacle and dialogue; as opposed to prose or poetry. I hear it rhythmically and see the images moving. GS: Mythology and mythological creatures feature in some of your work. SY: Yes. Absolutely. I’m obsessed with stories we tell ourselves about ourselves; how we explain the world to each other, the good and bad. That’s myth. I also love scale, from the epic to the intimate. And myths have scale in abundance. I’ll tell a small, very intimate story and then smash it up against a gigantic idea or image, the hidden mechanics of the universe, so that there’s context, a sense of how this story fits, or how we fit, in a larger picture. GS: Island City Stage is doing a production of your play Octopus. SY: Go Island City [laughs].
GS: Are there elements of Steve in any of the characters in Octopus? SY: Most of my plays come from a place of struggling with something personally, wanting to take an issue or events apart and understand it better, so I’m in all of the characters. But all of these guys have their own internal clockwork. Right now, I’m probably most like Max in my life. So now when you see the play, you’re going to judge me [laughs]. GS: In Octopus, a “committed” couple opens their relationship for a night of gay “swinging” with another couple. With gay marriage a subject on many people’s minds, do you think open relationships will continue or become a thing of the past? SY: Huh. Well, gay marriage is a separate issue from conversations about monogamy. Marriage is a basic legal right that all consent-

ing adults should be able to enjoy. Done. The intricacies of a sexual relationship with a partner, a husband, a wife, regardless of sexual identity, are yours to determine. You get to decide together what that looks like. But in a world where straight pop culture has casually adopted ideas like a “hall pass,” I suspect open relationships will still be around. GS: The character of Kevin makes reference to Icelandic pop music. Do you listen to Icelandic pop? SY: Love it. Björk is my favorite recording artist, hands down. She’s magic. And I’m a huge Sigur Rós fan, too. But don’t worry if you’re not into Icelandic pop, one of the main characters is on your side. GS: Octopus employs an anachronistic telegram delivery-person device. SY: Nostalgia can be a sort of warm, unexpected comfort. And that character has a difficult job to accomplish that is made much easier if he leans on comfort, if he makes himself appear as a familiar, silly, non-threatening thing. He chooses to be that because it gets the job done. GS: As a gay playwright, how important is it for you to keep the subject of HIV/AIDS fresh in people’s minds in your work? SY: Well, as Octopus hopefully illustrates in spades, there’s a way to do that without

hammering people. I mean, it’s primarily a play about sea monsters and what it means to say, “I love you.” But as a society, we do tend to learn everything we can about something horrific until it’s not scary anymore then put it on a shelf and consider it “dealt with.” That’s tricky because it leads to complacency. No, more like amnesia. As a child of the ‘80s (and a young, dumb sexual adventurer of the 90s), I wouldn’t wish that extreme “wrap it up or die” messaging on anyone now. There should be an acknowledgement that it just doesn’t mean the same thing to different generations of gay men. But I do think looking at how we respond to HIV now, how it exists with us now, is a way of looking at ourselves as a sub-culture with an identity, a history of battle, a lost generation, and asking if we’re still paying attention. GS: Steve, you’re a prolific playwright who has written several plays since Octopus. Have you started working on your next play? SY: I just finished a developing a largely onewoman show with Out of Hand Theater in Atlanta called Blackberry Winter that will be in several cities next season. And in addition to wrapping a new dark comedy for MTV, I’m working on a new farce about income inequality. Well, it’s about an Ambien-addicted suburban married couple that kills someone and hides the body, but also income inequality [laughs]. theguymag

FITNESS
Lose the Bloat! by Tom
bonanTi
o
Flush away that pesky water weight now! You’re positive that you are doing everything right. You’ve eliminated fats and cut back on your carbs, especially later in the day. You’re a slave to the weights and pound out cardio relentlessly day after day, and still you are not happy with the results. You have put on mass, but you just can’t seem to attain those championship cuts that really make a superior physique. So what the hell is going on? Maybe your body has a fluid imbalance and you are retaining water. Well, you no longer have to go around looking or feeling like an exhibit at Sea World. Here are some tips that will help you lose some of that bloat and keep you lean and svelte for the beach weather ahead. Too much salt makes your body retain fluids. Put a hold on the salt as well as high sodium foods like ketchup, soy sauce, processed meats and cheeses and many canned and frozen foods. Fast foods are notorious for their high salt and fat content. Avoid pizza, burgers, Mexican and Chinese takeout. Instead, prepare meals at home where you have control. Read labels and measure out portions. Stock up on foods that promote digestion and fluid shedding such as yogurt, cranberry juice and high fiber foods like cereal and brown rice. Avoid high sugar foods like cakes, pies, cookies and especially soda. Too much sugar can raise insulin levels, decreasing the body’s ability to excrete sodium and shed excess fat. You need to maintain a negative calorie balance if you’re dieting to lose weight. But if you starve yourself you can create water retention and end up more bloated than ever. Stick to a high protein, high fiber program. This will help preserve lean muscle and make you feel more satiated when you eat. Your body also has to expend more calories to process protein Never eat less than 1200-1500

calories per day when you diet or you’ll end up feeling sluggish and your body will store fat more easily. A sedentary lifestyle is a sure way to pack on the pounds and retain tons of water. Your lymphatic system can’t drain excess fluid from your system without movement. You can’t burn fat and build muscle sitting all day before a computer and all evening in front of the TV. Get up off your behind and get to the gym, the track or the pool – your healthy lifestyle depends upon it. Sometimes even when you’re tired, all you need is to get to the gym and you’ll feel rejuvenated right away! It’s ironic, but drinking can cause water retention. Booze acts as a diuretic at first, making you lose excess water. But that loss can lead to dehydration causing the body to scramble to retain needed water. When you go out, drink plenty of water, especially if you are going to imbibe. A well-hydrated body is less likely to retain water and you’ll not be as achy and hung over the next morning. Eat five to six small meals instead of one or two monster meals per day. You’ll have a more steady supply of energy all day long, you’ll store less fat, burn more calories and you’ll retain less fluid in your tissues. Combine these simple pointers with a high protein diet, keep hitting the gym, get plenty of rest and your body will be a hit this summer and always. Contact trainertomb@aol.com with questions.
