ENTERTAINMENT

BY DANIEL HICKS

THE ANNUAL WINTER PARTY FESTIVAL (WPF) IN MIAMI BEACH IS MARCH 4-9.

o

But key to remember here is that the event is no longer just a big circuit party, catering to shirtless hardbodies and party boys. Since 1994, the celebration has evolved, said Justin Bell, chair of WPF, who volunteers his time to make the whole thing happen. Yes — read that again — he works for free, in addition to his day job at Arc + Arrow Creative Group. As a result, dozens and dozens of non-profit organizations serving South Florida’s LGBT community receive a slice of a yearly collection that, when combined with monies received from last fall’s 17th Annual Miami Recognition Dinner, came to more than $227,500 in 2014. Both fundraising events, WPF and the dinner, are produced by the National LGBTQ Task Force, which “rescued” the festival in 2005 and turned it into what it is today. The GLBT Community Projects Fund of the Miami Foundation helps distribute the cash raised from both events to a wide assortment of local LGBT-oriented groups. As the festival has grown, however, bigger venues are no longer an option, said Bell. In order to keep a lid on ticket prices, he and his staff have added new social programming, including “Artscape” at the city’s botanical gardens on March 5 and a preview screening of the film, “In the Grayscale,” on March 7. And for all of you who still want to dance until dawn, here’s a list of the good-looking folks who will be spinning for WPF this year. Right now, Bell is busy providing orientations to hundreds of volunteers from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Some of this year’s notable sponsors are SHOWTIME, Art of Shaving, City of Miami Beach Centennial, Coca-Cola, Office Depot and Walgreens. And what about that lack of compensation for all that time he’s donating? “Seeing all the smiles on the faces of our guests and volunteers is compensation enough for me,” Bell said.

NON-PROFIT PROFILE

Latinos Salud Providing HIV/AIDS Support for Everyone

by Jameer

baptiste

o When a local social service organization closed their HIV/AIDS programs unexpectedly in mid2008, their Latino members were left worried and concerned. But thankfully Rafaelé Narváez, the program’s supervisor at the time, pledged to renew the services. Together with Dr. Stephen Fallon, he convened a community board, wrote a grant, and six months later, Latinos Salud opened its doors to the Broward community. “We couldn’t just stand by and watch an effective program disappear from the community,” Narváez said. “We had to try to restore the program for young gay Latinos.” Narváez now serves as the agency’s director of health programs. But why shut out a big segment of the population and only service the Latin and Hispanic community? “Though some of our programs were created specifically for Latinos, we don’t turn anyone away just because they are not Latino. We provide HIV testing for everyone, and have programs for all gay guys living with HIV,” Dr. Fallon said. The primary reason the organization targets the Latin/ Hispanic community is in direct response to a recent Florida

22

Department of Health study that found a higher incidence of HIV infection rates among gay Latinos in Broward County than among any other group. The organization moved to the heart of Wilton Manors on Wilton Drive and has developed multiple services to engage the community. One of their fundamental and essential programs is their linkage service, which connects local gay men living with HIV/AIDS to medical and support services they need to stay healthy. A life-coaching program helps men living with HIV and transgender individuals pursue goals and live healthier. “If you have a lot going on in your life, sometimes staying safe from HIV, or remembering to take your medicines on time if you’re HIV+, can fall off of your priority list,” said Johnathan Medina, health program manager. Their Youth Somos (translation – “We are”) program gives young people who are 18-30 years old a safe environment for activities, such as “Gaymers Night” — a comfortable space for playing videogames without the aggressive anti-homophobic slurs commonly heard in the gaming community. Their Juntos Popular Opinion Leader program assists Latino men of all

ages cultivate leadership skills. Latinos Salud opened a second location in Miami Beach last year after the long-serving HIV prevention agency on South Beach folded in 2013. The center is only open part-time and provides a fraction of the Wilton Manors programs. Dr. Fallon hopes to build the center into something comparable to the facility in Broward or possibly even larger to service the much larger Latin population in MiamiDade, where Latinos make up 65 percent of the county’s population versus 23 percent in Broward. “They’ve just been fantastic.” Dr. Fallon said, “Miami business owners have been exceptional with an open door policy that has helped to get the word out.” To view all their services visit their website at http://www.latinossalud.org/wiltonmanors. RESORT

Staycation: A Getaway Oasis at W Fort Lauderdale

[Courtesy of W Hotels] by Jameer

baptiste

o The W Fort Lauderdale is the perfect choice for a staycation. Located right along the main drag of Fort Lauderdale Beach, this highend hotel has the unique ability to provide you with intimate boutique service you desire. There are more than 500 “everything but typical” rooms and suites that include floor-to-ceiling window views of the Atlantic Ocean and intracoastal. There’s a room for everybody — from a romantic setting with “peek-apoo” bathtub to a two-bedroom suite for family fun. But the variety doesn’t stop there. W Fort Lauderdale provides guests with so much to do onsite that there’s little reason from them to leave the hotel environment.

There’s a salon and spa for pure relaxation and indulgence. A café bar, W Cafe, so guests get their mornings off on the right foot. A fitness center and two beach fitness activities, boot camp and yoga. There are two infinity pools that look out over the sea with adjoining hot tub and cabanas. Try the by-the-pool food service, Wet Bar, so you can bask in the sun with no need for a snack run. The in-house restaurant, Steak 954, accommodates all meal times. And two lounge areas, Whiskey Blue and Living Room, enable guests to let loose and dance the night away.

There’s even the W’s Whatever/ Whenever service: “We’ll make your special moment magical and transform your dreams into reality whether it’s a sunset cruise or mariachi serenaded spa services. Whatever you want. Whenever you want it (as long as it’s legal).” The hotel prides itself on being extremely gay-friendly. Recently, it hosted two big LGBT events — Gay Days 2014 and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau’s 2015 “Love Is Love” mass wedding. It’s a true retreat from the daily grind of life.

SCREEN SAVOR

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

Learning to Crawl

o

For a lot of folks, LGBT film fest favorite WTC View (Edgeworx Studios/Robert Ahrens Entertainment), written and directed by gay novelist/playwright/filmmaker Brian Sloan, was their first glimpse of out actor Michael Urie, pre-Ugly Betty. In the film, based on Sloan’s play, Urie plays Eric, a gay man who places a classified ad in the Village Voice looking for a roommate for his apartment in Lower Manhattan with a view of the World Trade Center. What makes the ad so unique is the timing of its placement – on September 10, 2001. What follows, over the course of a few weeks, are a series of voicemail messages, apartment viewings and interviews, and Eric’s eventual decline into instability. Initially attempting to put a brave face on all of it, with the strangers he encounters who are looking for a place to live as well as friends for whom Eric tries to keep it together. His best friend Josie (Elizabeth Kapplow), an “Uptown girl,” expresses her concern, but he refuses her attention. As it turns out, it’s with the strangers, the potential roommates, Eric encounters that he’s able to let down his guard. Each of them tells their 9/11 story and, in turn, Eric shares parts of his experiences of that day and those that followed. Gay Alex (Nick Potenzieri), in particular, who worked in Tower 1, provides Eric with the much-needed comfort and contact that he needed. It’s not surprising that Urie went on to become a star on TV and on stage. He’s believable and riveting throughout and is able to overcome the stagey nature of the production. The rest of the cast is fairly forgettable. WTC View holds up well, 10 years after it first premiered, and is as timely as ever in these continuingly troubled times. [Out of print for a few years, WTC View becomes available in its original HD format for the first time, through iTunes for purchase and rental on March 3.]

Whiplash (Sony Pictures Classics), or “The Humiliation Game,” which would have been an equally good name, features J.K. Simmons’ Oscar-winning (Best Actor in A Supporting Role) performance as sadistic music teacher and musician Fletcher, whose manner in the classroom verges on torture. The recipient of a majority of his guile in Whiplash is Andrew (Miles Teller), a first year student at Shaffer Conservatory who, at 19, wants nothing more than to be the best jazz drummer. Interestingly, both men occupy a place on the social awkwardness scale. Andrew is painfully shy. Watching him asking movie theater concession-stand operator Nicole (Melissa Benoist) out for a date is squirm-worthy. Then, when he sabotages the relationship, it’s not unexpected, but no less uncomfortable. Fletcher social incompetence, brought on by his perfectionism and quest for military precision, is far more lethal. Fletcher inspires fear and respect in his students by any means necessary, but his favorite device is verbal abuse. The venom he spews is homophobic, anti-Semitic, racist and always personal. He’s a chair-thrower and a spirit-crusher. Simmons earns his Oscar, from the first time he appears onscreen to the last. Teller is also amazing in what appears to be theguymag

guymagtube

a role as physically demanding as Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything or Reese Witherspoon in Wild. Jazz musicians don’t have the best reps as it is, and Whiplash does little for their cause. However, if you want to see a movie with outstanding performances, Oscar-winning editing, and a great soundtrack, Whiplash is the one. DVD bonus features include commentary with Simmons and writer/director Damien Chazelle, as well as footage from “An Evening at the Toronto International Film Festival” with Chazelle, Simmons and Teller.

o

The Network of the 21st century, Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut Nightcrawler (Universal) paints an unflattering portrait of newsgathering and reporting, as well as Los Angeles after dark. Bright, driven, but socially awkward Lou (Jake Gyllenhaal) realizes that selling stolen goods won’t lead to respectable, full-time employment. However, Lou finds inspiration when he stumbles on a news crew’s video coverage of a car accident. Starting small, Lou finds a way to raise the funds to purchase a police scanner and camcorder. Learning by imitating, Lou, who has “a good eye,” is soon selling his crime scene footage to Nina (Rene Russo), the news direcshare with us on guymag.net

tor at the lowest rated TV station in L.A. For her station, Nina is looking for the “screaming woman running down the street with her throat cut” kind of footage, and Lou is able to provide her with it. Too much of a job for just one man, Lou hires desperate Richard (Riz Ahmed), as a low-paid intern to assist him. Meanwhile, Nina is buying enough of Lou’s footage that he can buy a new car, new scanner and more. However, as he becomes more successful, Lou begins to act more brazenly, adding his own touch to scenes he shoots, asking Nina out on a date, offending fellow cameraman Joe (Bill Paxton), learning to be a more aggressive negotiation and better salesman of his product, and ultimately taking dangerous risks. All of it comes at a price in this twisted thriller. Lou’s relationship with Nina suffers, as does his connection with Rick. Suddenly the police are aware of Lou’s exploits and come after him. But Lou is a survivor, willing to sacrifice almost anything to succeed. Gyllenhaal is alternately terrifying and amusing as Lou. It’s also nice to see Russo onscreen again. Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD bonus features include commentary by the Gilroys (writer/director Dan, producer Tony and editor John) and the featurette “If It Bleeds, It Leads.” theguymag

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Sean Kavanagh “I’m Hear to Listen” by Jameer

baptiste

o Sean Kavanagh’s philosophy on bartending is rather interesting: “Instead of going out on the weekend and spending money to entertain yourself, you can work and be entertained,” conveying a unique perspective that most of us ordering drinks don’t consider. “Bartending is a form of counseling. People come out to drink to release stress and stuff. Most have family issues (where the family is not accepting of their lifestyle choice), which leads to drug use,” Kavanagh said, as he pursues a degree in healthcare. Having meaningful conversations with customers at PJ’s and forming relationships built on trust come naturally to him. “I’m cool as possible with people.” His ability to breakthrough with strangers and establish a comfort level is reinforced by his love for travel, which he does frequently, taking about four to six vacations a year. In fact, he has traveled to more than 20 states in the U.S. “Learning different cultures helps you interact with people,” Kavanagh said. But believe it or not, with all the traveling he has done, he has never traveled on a train or taken a cruise. And get this; he has a fear of flying. Planes give him a lot of anxiety, so much so, that every night before a flight, he does not

sleep well. However, the restless nights do not deter him, because between his sleep deprivation and some self-styled “medication” on the day of the flight, he can actually rest on the plane. In person, Kavanagh oozes an exotic sex appeal for those with a taste for the Caribbean; a seductive accent, his Jamaican upbringing and nine years of living in the Bahamas. Whatever the reason people may be drawn to him, his life right now has all the right ingredients to bring him closer and closer to his personal and professional goal of

opening his own healthcare facility in five years. So if you ever need of an ear to listen or a shoulder to lean on, visit Kavanagh on Thursday and Sunday after 8:00 p.m. at PJ’s in Wilton Manors.

PROFILE

BY CLIFF DUNN

SEAN DAVID MAD ABOUT ‘LE BOY’

first time Sean David and I laid eyes o The upon one another—and “eyes” is the appropriate word here, if you’ve ever had the experience of staring into those piercing baby blue-greys—we were at the now-closed (and much missed) China White nightclub in downtown Fort Lauderdale. It was 2007, and he had recently purchased an ownership stake in the popular and iconic Fort Lauderdale gay strip club Johnny’s, and was working the crowd at the twinkie-rich environment that was China White, on the look for both potential entertainers and for the young and hot clientele he was hoping to entice into the environs of his own operation. Ever one with an eye for talent (you could instead say an eye for money), the Israeliborn David handed out free drink cards like candy, and at that moment he was everyone present’s libe-feter (Yiddish: “sugar uncle”). A lesser man than myself would have been envious—but then again, did I mention those eyes? Fast forward seven-and-a-half years, and David has presided over the closing of the venerable South Florida adult entertainment institution, and hitched his star to a new concept in gay entertainment and hospitality: Le Boy, which opened its doors and 2,500 square feet space to positive reviews on December 26, 2014. “Johnny’s had an amazing 30-year run,” David reflects. “In the seven years I owned it, we changed the brand many times, in order to keep up with the tastes of the industry and the client base.” Johnny’s underwent several major transformations during David’s watch. Starting with a renovated nightclub area, he added private VIP rooms and a sexy décor, including

In his larger, “secondary” room, David employed the popular Detroit-born bartender Mike, whose personal experience at the popular club included dancing before building a large and loyal following of happy hour and early evening regulars. That same room became a popular weekend spot for African American gay men who were on the look and on the down-low. (It was at one of those “Black Banana reunion” parties that this writer was first ever called “daddy”—talk about your fond memories; another tale for another time.) “I realized in the last few years that there theguymag

have been a lot of changes in the business,” David offers. “The Internet is a part of every facet of our lives—including meeting your partner and to hook-up. “Grindr, Manhunt, Adam-for-Adam, and social media like Facebook make it very easy to connect. What we were doing at Johnny’s needed to adapt so that we would prosper.” With that in mind, David began looking for the Next Big Idea. He is no stranger to taking entrepreneurial risks. Before purchasing Johnny’s, he first was its landlord, owning the property upon which it stood. That gave him hands-on understanding of the business’ potential. Of course, David was no novice when it came to gay adult entertainment. As a co-owner, he helped helm the opening of Boardwalk in April 2001. “I left Boardwalk in 2005,” David recalls. “While I was seeing what would come next, I got my roofing license.” He also owned Greater Fort Lauderdale’s three biggest coin laundromats, filling 4,000 square feet (each) with the sound of rattling coins, industrial-strength dryers, and crying infants. How do you say “Renaissance Man” in Hebrew? With Le Boy, David and his staff have transformed an eyesore of a building—an ancient relic that once housed Bill’s Filling Station and the now-closed Depot—into an upscale facility with an inviting, neighborhood atmosphere. “We have created a great brand,” David

boasts. “There is a dress code for the bartenders, as well as for the entertainers—who are performers, not dancers. “We have performances, these aren’t just go-go dancers on a stage,” he adds. “They are dressed in costumes and do an actual show for our guests. We created a choreographed show, and it will keep getting better. There is also less talking from the emcees, which can be grating after a while. “Le Boy is more intimate, an atmosphere that is more conducive to having an enjoyable evening. We have an upscale VIP room which is perfect for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, any occasion, in a private environment. “And our beautiful outdoor patio really showcases the great weather we have.” Along with the setting, the outdoor patio boasts a gourmet barbecue and an environment that is great for socializing. David isn’t being cocky when he extols upon his pride of accomplishment. “I got more compliments after the opening of Le Boy than for any of the other six bars I have opened,” he says. “I am proud to say that I took a place that was a dump— which had been closed for four years—and turned it into an upscale neighborhood place. The customers’ comments tell me that it’s working.” Casting himself into the future, David is just as excited about plans both immediate and long-term. “I wanted to have a club that was closer to Wilton Manors,” he confides. “I want to stay and expand my business model to other cities, and became the model against which the industry standard is judged. “I want to open a liquor store with a new energy to it, sexy and intimate. Like a bar where you go to purchase your booze. I also have a concept for a wine and sandwich shop for this area that will knock people’s socks off. “I want to continue to make people happy.” The eyes: They really are the window to the soul. theguymag

GUY EXCLUSIVE BY RICHARD HACK

Integrative Medicine Is It Right for You?

o

We’ve all heard about tradition Western medicine that holds the medical doctor to be the guru of all things health. Cutting edge and state-of-theart. And then there’s Eastern medicine which traces its origins back 2,000 years to ancient China, and includes various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (Tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary therapy. While both concepts of medicine have their supporters and critics, the idea of Integrative Medicine, combining the best of the east with the best of the west is gaining in popularity. We approached Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera of Genesis Health Institute to add clarity to the issue, and help guide us to our own conclusions where our health and medical treatment is concerned. GUY: Why Should We Pay Attention to Integrative Medicine in 2015 Ferdinand Cabrera: Many people think that integrative or functional medicine precludes traditional medicinal practices altogether. This is wholly untrue. Instead, integrative medicine seeks to bring together all of the wisdom of western and eastern medicine to treat a person holistically. Think of it this way: instead of treating only the symptoms, integrative medicine looks for and treats the causes of those symptoms. Ultimately, I find this interdisciplinary approach has better long term success rates for patients who suffer from chronic illness and pain. G: Is Integrative Treatment Right for You? FC: Some patients who have experienced troubling symptoms for years only find relief after seeking the advice of an integrative practitioner. Consider this example. A young woman has suffered from the effects of anxiety and depression for several years. She’s dealt with weight fluctuations and had difficulty maintaining her social and work-life balance. After treating the symptoms for several years with anti-depressants and therapy, she tries seeking the advice of an integrative healthcare practitioner. Testing and a comprehensive evaluation that covers her mind and physical symptoms indicate that she might have a gluten sensitivity and that her body isn’t processing vitamins correctly. After a few months of supplemen-

58

theguymag

tal vitamins and a gluten-free diet, almost all symptoms of depression and anxiety are gone. She is no longer experiencing panic attacks and appears happier and more confident to friends and family members. Did you know that a vitamin deficiency can mimic the symptoms of anxiety and depression? While not every person who is depressed or anxious will find the same answer, it serves as an example of what looking at a person’s body and mind can do for a diagnosis. Chances are that the young woman might have struggled with those symptoms for a lifetime without the help of an integrative practitioner. If you’re suffering from chronic pain or an illness like type 2 diabetes, you are likely a good candidate for a comprehensive evaluation by an integrative physician. Even those who have had difficult losing weight and feel constantly fatigued can benefit from an integrative approach. G: Why Does Integrative Medicine Work FC: At a superficial level, integrative medicine provides patients with a personal relationship to their doctors. Traditional medicine practitioners may or may not take the time to ask about a patient’s habits, stressors, and life circumstances. Integrative practitioners will always ask these questions. Many patients will leave an integrative practice feeling empowered and heard, rather than given a prescription and steered out the door. theguymag

The practice also benefits from combining different forms of medicine to create a personalized and unique treatment regimen. Often, our bodies heal best when treated from the inside out, and changing our diets and exercise habits while taking traditional medicine to treat symptoms can rapidly improve our bodies’ natural healing capabilities. G: What Will the Natural Medicine Practice of the Future Look Like FC: If you think about it logically, it is the natural progression of medicine to look at the whole person when treating illnesses. Science is uncovering the complex way in which nutrition, exercise, life stressors, and daily habits lead our bodies down paths either to wellness or chronic pain and illness. Start reading about integrative practices and functional medicine online and you will encounter skeptics. Before that bandwagon, try talking to someone who has experienced integrative treatment. They’ll likely change the way you think about the practice. A true integrative approach will never shun traditional medicine. Instead, it will find complementary treatments to improve the results of your traditional medicine regimen. share with us on guymag.net

The movement is gaining steam and the National Health Interview Survey on complementary and alternative medicine in the US collects information every 5 years on the number of people who seek alternative medicine. In 2007, the most recent data available, 38% of Americans sought complementary or integrative services. As more scientific data is collected on the integrative medicine approach, it is likely that we will see more uses of complementary services in the healthcare field. Even health insurance companies who are starting to provide discounts and better deals to employees who exhibit healthy lifestyle habits is a way that integrative medicine is becoming pervasive. G: How Can I Find an Integrative Practitioner FC: The best advice I can give to an individual interested in an integrative medicine approach is to use directory of medical providers available from The Institute of Functional Medicine (www.functionalmedicine.org) and American Academy for Anti-Aging medicine (www.a4m. com). I recommend seeking a Doctor who has completed a Fellowship in Functional and/or Anti-Aging Medicine. theguymag

RECREATION

Bowling Bugs Bite at Manor Lanes

by Jameer

baptiste

o A lot of people these days do not think of going bowling when they contemplate what to do for fun on a Saturday night or think about how to spend part of their vacation in Fort Lauderdale. But this traditional pastime is worth giving a try. Got a group of friends coming together but tired of the same old club scene? Or want the family to detach from their mobile devices and share some quality time? What about an original idea for a date in a relatively intimate setting without any of the awkward silence of a candlelight dinner for two? Then consider visiting one of the local bowling alleys in town.

Each lane offers a chance to teach friends, family and lovers how to have fun and learn the art of hitting a strike (for you novices, a “strike” is when the bowling ball is released with just enough strength and precision to knock down all those white pins you’ll see at the end of the lane — all at the same time). It is a great social activity that works well to break the ice and an experience to carry back with you if returning to another part of the country. Bowling alleys are found in almost every major city and town in America. In Wilton Manors on NE 26th Street, The Manor Lanes Bowling and Sports Den Pub is an energetic yet laid-back environ-

ment that includes a fully stocked liquor bar and fresh food service. The lanes and pub are open seven days a week during the day and also provide an awesome late night venue, Glow Bowl. Every Friday and Saturday night from 10:00 p.m. — 2:00 a.m. the bowling alley dims the lights and sets the mood with an Internetlinked jukebox and black-light ambiance so bowlers and partiers are guaranteed a good time. Private, closed-door parties for both adults and kids are available. And if you happen to get bit by the bowling bug, consider joining a local league or partake in Poverello’s annual fundraiser Bowl-a-thon.

o On April 1 last year, Allen Berta and Jean-Francois Vincent never owned a retail store, but their background in management and passion for fashion gave them the confidence to open The Athletic Man, which is located two blocks south of Wilton Drive on NE 4th Avenue and NE 15th Street. The boutique store caters to gym buffs who enjoy fashionable, active wear that can be worn while working out or just out on the town on any given night. Allen and Jean-François’s stylish tank tops and sexy shorts transition well from jock apparel to casual, everyday look. The store carries a taste of

everything, from cutting-edge, trendy items to classic styles. The two only work with quality local and national designers, traveling as far as Las Vegas to sample the new and hottest lines. When selecting items for the store, they pay close attention to detail and focus on the way garments hug the body’s natural curves. Because two eyes are better than one, Allen, who has collected tanks tops since his 20’s, and JeanFrancois partnered on their own signature “Athletic Man” collection. Cotton Logo shorts are fitted with side pockets and zippered back pockets. Logo tank tops come in both tight and looser-fit cuts. “We are gay men that know what theguymag

gay men like,” said Allen. They also sell swimwear and lounge wear. And if you’re that guy who always likes a fresh new look, try to stop by their store once a month because their signature and boutique items never grow stale and are constantly evolving with the times. Browse through their Facebook page for some of their newest apparel offerings.

Elton John

o The 2005 Tony Award winner of Best Book centers around a hysterical spelling bee in Putnam Valley Middle School. The show utilizes real audience member participation; select guests will compete in the contest against six young characters. The sendup of highly competitive spelling bees mines most of its humor through bizarre and raunchy usage-ina-sentence examples for the difficult words. William Finn wrote the music and lyrics for a show originally conceived by Rachel Sheinkin. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

DINING

Hobo’s Grill

HOBO’S GRILL AT RUMORS 2426 WILTON DRIVE WILTON MANORS, FL 33305 954-565-8851 [Photo by Fudio]

o RUMORS is not just a bar (although it has three kick’n bars)!!!. Hobo’s Grill is now serving fresh food daily inside Rumors Bar & Grill. Those who know me know I am a huge fan of owner’s Shawn and Nick. From the Courtyard to the annual Christmas bike extravaganza, I love the way they do business. What they have done with Rumors is simply fantastic. Since bringing Hobo’s Grill into the mix, the food is fabulous. They have a full kitchen on premises so all the meals are prepared and served fresh right to your table. They have an ample staff – friendly – ready to make sure you have an awesome dining experience. Rumors is a place where anyone/everyone can come to party. They are located in the heart of the island city of Wilton Manors at the epicenter of Wilton Drive. They embrace and support our diverse community and their warm and friendly staff welcome all to come

have a great time. They feature a Video Bar, Sports Bar, Martini Lounge and, recently opened, a new Patio. Smoking is allowed on the patio though the inside bars are designated a non-smoking environment. Small well-mannered pets are permitted on the patio. The laid-back environment allows you to kick back and watch a game, play a pool tournament, watch a drag show, see a live concert or simply people watch. You can order a late breakfast, have brunch, lunch, dinner or just a snack. This is the place for great drinks, food, people and entertainment.. I first got turned on to the improved food at Rumors by a friend who went there right after Hobo’s was introduced to the food process. I was cruising up the drive, chatting with him about where to stop for a quick bite before a meeting. He insisted I stop at Rumors. While I had been to Rumors before, I associated it with routine bar food. He told me I had to try the

Lobster Bisque. I simply thought he was mistaken with the location. I was truly surprised with the quality and quantity of the Lobster Bisque soup. While it is not on the menu, ASK for it. I was glad I did! I have also sampled the Shrimp Poor Boy ($12), it was very tasty. Most recently, I stopped in for lunch. Upon arriving we were greeted by the friendly wait staff who seated us and immediately took our drink order. As it happen, Nick Berry was at the bar enjoying lunch himself. I was taken back with the more than adequate selection of appetizers (foreplay), plus sandwiches and burgers. I ordered the Seafood Chowder, which was a special item ($13). It was thick, creamy and a full lunch meal. My dining companion ordered a small salad and the smelts. I had sampled the smelts and they were very tasty. Toward the end of our meal, Shawn came in!!! Just a great time. You cannot go wrong for a nice casual night out at Rumors Bar & Grill.

TRAVEL

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

Where Are the Ski Mountains in Florida?

o

While states up north continue to get pummeled with layers upon layers of snow and ice cold winds, we here in Florida endure a brisk chill for no more than a couple of days or so. We have year-round sunny beautiful days and we continue to sport our casual Florida beach attire consisting of flip-flops, shorts and t-shirts during the winter months. We never have to be cautious about the icy patches on the road. Or wake up in the morning to clear the snow from the driveway. There are countless winter joys and breathtaking sceneries that we just don’t get to experience here. But with our gloves in hand and Long Johns packed, we can escape to winter wonder paradises only short distances away and then make our return back to the sunny side of things before the adventure turns into a nightmare. Our closest sprinkled white destination is North Carolina. The journey could be made by vehicle — road trip — at an estimated drive time of just a little over 11 hours before you reach North Carolina’s “snow capital” High Country!

72

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

High Country makes up the northern counties of Western North Carolina and is known as the state’s popular snow region. Perched up on the mountains, High Country gets just enough snow in the wintertime without extreme snowfall — at times the ski resorts even have to kick start the season with artificial snow. Southern ski and snowboard enthusiasts escape there every winter. However, it’s a perfect snow destination for the inexperienced winter newbie as well. There are three major ski resorts in the area: Beech Mountain (1007 Beach Mountain Parkway, Beech Mountain, NC phone: 800-438-2093), Appalachian Ski Mountain (940 Ski Mountain Rd. Blowing Rock, NC 28605 phone: 828-295-7828) and Sugar Mountain (1009 Sugar Mountain Drive Sugar Mountain, NC 28604 Phone: 828-898-4521). Each Mountain resort offers skiing, snowboarding and tubing. And the best part is that no experience is necessary. You can be a skilled skier or a fresh out-of-the-gate beginner. All are welcome and can be trained; from theguymag

the little precocious titans to the inexperienced adult. For you beginners, the French Swiss Ski College (940 Ski Mountain Road Blowing Rock, NC 28605 Phone: 828-295-9311) at the Appalachian Ski Mountain will provide you with the training you need to advance your skills; from baby steps to “I got this” skiing. And for the advanced skier, Sugar Mountain’s Whoop-de-doo provides the rush and excitement you crave. Whoop-de-doo, a 1200 feet slop, is North Carolina’s largest vertical drop and only Double Black-Diamond run. But to all you pro skiers and snowboarders, to avoid disappoint, remember that although North Carolina is a celebrated ski destination for southerners, it is no Alpine Ski range and should not be compared to the slopes of Colorado, Utah and the other major skiing destinations. North Carolina’s snow region also offers other fun and less vigorous snow activities like snow tubing, zip lining, and sledding. Hawknest (2058 Skyland Drive, Seven Devils, NC 28604 Phone: 828-963-6561), the largest snow tubing park in the east coast, share with us on guymag.net

has over 20 lanes that are 400 to 1000 feet long solely dedicated to snow tubing. The park also includes multiple zip lines that are over 200 feet high and propel you at speeds of 50mph. To top it off, after a zip line experience, you can capture the splendor and incredible landscape views of the area on their huge observational deck in their mountaintop lodge. And the fun doesn’t stop there; on Beech Mountain you can take the kids up the town’s hill for free sledding. However, if you want to amp up your winter experience, the next snow adventure is only an additional 3 to 4 hour drive north of High Country. West Virginia is a short 3-hour flight away from Wilton Manors and less than a one-day’s drive. Known as the Wild and Wonderful state, West Virginia has amazing outdoor adventures year-round. And when it comes to the winter months, the activities are kicked up a notch with an average snowfall of 15 feet. There’s nowhere else in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast that beats its rigid terrain and elevations, which makes it perfect for outdoor sports. Some of their most popular ski resorts are Canaan Valley (230 Main Lodge Rd., Davis, WV 26260 Phone: 800-622-4121), Snowshoe Mountain (10 Snowshoe Drive, Snowshoe, WV 26209 Phone: 877-441-4386) and Winterplace (100 Old Flat Top Mt. Rd., Ghent, WV 2584 Phone: 304-787-3221). All locations provide the traditional snow activities like skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, and iceskating but some offer the ultimate snow excursions. At Snowshoe Mountain, you can take an off road tour on their enclosed heated Polaris RZR — a 4-passanger monster tracker truck. Or you can get behind the wheel yourself on one of their snowmobile tours where each person drives their own vehicle. And what about that winter wonderland scene on the sleigh, Greenbrier America’s Resort (300 W. Main Street, White Sulphur Springs, WV 24986 Phone: 855453-4858) can bring that dream to fruition. Florida is a snowbirds’ hideaway but their winter paradises can be our reality. The Caribbean islands are appealing but we already have the sun-soaked tropics here in Florida. Make memories, be adventurist, and experience activities you can’t do in your own hometown. And make your Florida social media friends jealous with your recorded snowball fight, your first snow angel and your crafty snowman. theguymag

Higher Intensity, Bigger Muscles, Less Time! by Tom

Want to put on some quality beef, but just don’t have endless hours to spend in the gym? Are you one of those rare breed who believe that there is more to life than working out? Well, I’ve got news for you. You can build muscle, burn fat, and improve overall fitness in less time than you think! In fact, many fitness experts tell us that briefer (less than half an hour, 3 to 5 times a week), higher intensity (heavier weights, less rest between sets) workouts are the way to go if you want to build lean muscle in less time. Shorter, higher intensity workouts are more beneficial for a number of reasons. Firstly, you work every muscle group thoroughly with minimal rest between sets. No wasting time! Secondly, during shorter workouts your testosterone levels rise and remain steady. Working out for hours on end can actually be counterproductive causing testosterone levels to drop as cortisol (a bad, stressful hormone) and lactic acid levels rise. This can lead to overtraining, fatigue and even injury! For intense, briefer workouts use “giant sets”, a body building concept that employs a multiple number of sets in a minimal amount of time. Giant sets can be performed in several ways. Try at least 5 sets back to back, each on a different muscle group. Use weight that will challenge you for 12 reps and remember to rest only 30 seconds between sets. When performing this routine have everything set before you get started so you can blast through the workout with no interruptions. Here’s a sample workout for upper body. The first exercise of the five set cycle is the incline dumbbell press. This exercise works upper and outer chest. After a 30 second rest, move on to the wide grip lat pull down for that “V” shaped back. Seated dumbbell overhead presses are next for shoulders. Pump up those triceps with a set of 15-20 dips. Finish round one of this monster routine with a set of standing dumbbell curls for biceps and

forearms. After a two minute rest, perform this giant set one or possibly two more times depending upon your time and energy. Up your weight on each set by about 2 per cent if you can manage it. Adhere to proper form with each exercise. You can also perform giant sets for lower body on the same day as upper body depending upon your strength and stamina. Or you can work upper body and lower body on different days depending upon how much time you have. Actually, I prefer doing upper and lower body on different days. Regardless, remember each of these workout is intense and should only take you 30 minutes tops to perform. Use squats, leg presses, leg curls, stiff-leg dead lifts, lunges and a high repetition calf raise (15-20 reps) to slam quads, hamstrings, calves and butt. Perform 2-3 giant sets for legs. Rest 30 seconds between exercises and two – three minutes between giant sets (a little more rest may be needed for legs as compared to upper body). Work abdominals by doing crunches at anytime during these workouts or on off days. Shorter, higher intensity workouts can benefit both upper and lower body without spending endless hours in the gym. Be sure to train each muscle group twice a week. Remember to rest between training sessions. For more tips on how to turn up the heat under your springtime workouts, contact TrainerTomB@ aol.com.
