Soul and Attitude

Raph Solo Talks Music, Faith and Love by

Grant James

o

Raph Solo’s first single from his soon-to-bereleased full-length album is his personal story of making peace with God, falling in love, and celebrating the man he is today. “Glass of Wine” follows “Brand New Dime”, his hit dance record from last fall about breaking free from a self-imposed mental prison he built while coming to terms with his sexuality. In his memoir released earlier this year, The Memoirs of Angel King, Solo opened up about the struggles he endured in coming to terms with his sexuality, and the reparative therapy that he participated in. Solo sat down with us to talk about his new single, his upcoming album, and why faith is important to him as both an artist and a person. Guy Magazine: I know that you went through some intense reparative therapy. Do you think that it’s affected you as an artist? As an artist I’m inspired to produce work which reflects my personal experiences. Without a doubt reparative therapy has affected me as an artist. In retrospect I think, it has been a very positive thing because as a result I am not afraid to be myself as a person which is reflected in my work now. How did you bounce back from it? Writing my book, The Memoirs of Angel King was a great way to deal with things. Also, I used some of my earlier material to express the state of mind I was experiencing at the time. More recently, my work reflects my contentment of who I am. I’ve bounced back by making music. I came out and I sang about it. How has your personal faith helped you, and how did you find said faith? Faith helps because it’s pretty much impossible to live a happy life if you don’t have faith in yourself and in what you do. When you beieve in yourself you start to believe in others and it has a positive knock- on effect which spreads. Things are more possible with faith. Most of all, self-respect and integrity are born with faith. Those things are reflected in the lyrics of my songs on the new album. You will hear it in the music. Where did the concept for “Glass of Wine” come from? Love is like a vineyard, you plant the seed and wait for it to grow and then comes forth a glass of wine. I used “Glass of Wine” as a metaphor because of the way we feel slightly typysy when we fall in love.

20

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

What music influences you currently? I love pop music. I listen a lot to current pop songs. I also listen to older music from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, such as funk, disco, and early ‘80s pop-rock as well. Music which influneces me is strongly based. I think you will be able to hear some of my influences on the album. What can fans expect from your full-length album? I have a new sound. It is fresh, upbeat, very melodic and very very funky with a lot hot soul and attitude. The songs are contemporary and relevant in respect of our world today with killer hooks which are naturally phrased in a conversational context, all of which give my new album a very raw and authentic feel. It’s a very honest and bare album. What’s next for Raph Solo? A tour perhaps? A tour would be great! I have the new album coming out as well as a short film music video clip featuring two tracks from the album which will be coming out at the same time as the album. Meanwhile, there will be a remix EP featuring “Glass of Wine” and some of my previous hits in time for Christmas, as well as the new album in winter 2014. guymagtube

THE WEEK

Island City Artwalk, Miami Beach Jazz Festival and Female Trouble ____________________ Thursday

11/14

12th Annual Miami Short Film Festival: Between the Lines oThe week-long Miami Short Film Festival spends an evening regarding our wonderful culture. The collection Between the Lines explores the various hurdles facing the LGBTQ community. In “Kissing Drew” a bullied eighth grader tries to regain his dignity from a sex-obsessed “cool kid” who he privately desires. “Natives” finds a lesbian couple traversing the Native American heritage of one of the partners. In “Sabbatical” Phillip and Sam decide to separate and then get back together. Those and three other 20-minute shorts make up this LGBTQ specific night of the festival. 8:30 p.m. Paragon Grove 13. 3015 Grand Ave, Coconut Grove, 33133.

Debra Voigt, Soprano oThis diva of the operatic world has been impressing audiences for almost two decades as an acclaimed soprano. Unlike most fat operatic singers, Voigt took a risky gamble back in the early 2000s when she decided to lose weight and underwent gastric bypass surgery. The Royal Opera House had fired her for not fitting into the show’s costume—a “little black dress”. After the successful surgery, she was rehired for the role of Ariadne. An outraged public welcomed her back with open arms. Her popular career allows her to currently tour, singing both opera and pop music. The 90-minute show is sure to dazzle any fan of vocal talent. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center. 300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Nudes on Show oIs there anything more sexually enticing than the idea of art fused with nudity? Nothing triggers an intense guttural feeling of desire than the classic moment in a young painter’s life when the model disrobes. Even Rose in Titanic fell under the spell of the artist’s male gaze, and for this month’s Art Walk on Wilton Drive, nudes will abound. The collection by local artists includes pastels, charcoal drawings, and some quality prints. The art will be in front of the Tracy Carroll Salon on the corner of

NE 8th Avenue from 7-11. The pieces promise to be reasonably priced, so if you’re in the mood to have a well-etched dong as your living room centerpiece, bring your checkbook. 7 p.m. Wilton Drive Art Walk. Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Female Trouble oThe month long retrospective of the world’s most beloved b-movie queen, Divine, reaches its pinnacle with O Cinema’s showing of her most indelible performance in John Water’s Female Trouble. With a new documentary (which played at the Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) entitled I Am Divine opening on November 29th, O Cinema has decided to celebrate the highlights of Divine’s successful and notorious career. Female Trouble tells the depraved life story of obese criminal Dawn Davenport, from go-go dancing in Baltimore’s infamous Block to death by electric chair. Highlights include Dawn mainlining liquid eyeliner and an obsessive neighbor named Ida, grooming her nephew to be gay. The film plays at 11:00 p.m. O Cinema Wynwood. 90 NW 29th St, Miami, 33127.

Miami Beach Jazz Festival oWorld class jazz musicians take center stage at the Miami Beach Jazz Festival. Event founder and producer, Carmen J. Cartiligia, envisions the festival to be purely jazz, going back to the basics and focusing on only exceptional true jazz artists. “We’re going ‘old school’ for this event,” she explains, as artists from Brazil face their US counterparts. Featured artists include Michelle Coltrane, Markus Gottschlich, Mads Tolling, and The South Florida Jazz Orchestra. Miami has always been a jazz haven, with this event a highlight of the year. 5 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

FITNESS

Work Up A Sweat: It’s Sexy and Healthy by Tom

Bonanti

o

Maintaining a fitness lifestyle can be a daunting endeavor. Adhering to a schedule of healthy eating, keeping up with regular medical check-ups, and getting enough sleep are simply a beginning. Sticking to these basic habits along with meeting the demands of work and a social life can be overwhelming. So how do you squeeze in a regular exercise program on top of everything else? I say, you make time for the things that are important to you and there is nothing more vital than your own good health. Working out with weights and doing regular cardio, if you do them correctly, are draining and time consuming. Yet their benefits are infinite. You’ll not only look better, you’ll live longer and save hundreds of thousands of dollars in health care expenses. Doubt me? Just get sick, I mean really sick, like a week in the hospital and you’ll see what I mean. Sometimes I get particularly annoyed looking around at the guys who put staying healthy and working out on the back burner. Aside from work and loved ones, these should be top priorities for everyone. Yet pampered expensive cruises and vacations and wild weekend partying seem to take precedence as waistlines widen and butts get bigger. Sure, there are short cuts available like plastic surgery and steroids, but these are quick patchy fixes compared to what discipline and hard work can achieve. A beautiful body is the result of sacrifice, dedication and lots of sweat.

50

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

Why not start today and design a winning strategy to get and stay fit. Consider three factors as you ponder a program: schedule flexibility, workout simplification, and diversification. Schedule flexibility is crucial in these times of unplanned events, hectic traffic and even more chaotic work schedules. A sharp guy begins the day with a plan so that he can accomplish everything that is important. Nothing is more important than your workout, so schedule a time and try to stick with it. Join a gym that is convenient, preferably located between work and home. Most gyms have extended hours, so if you get derailed don’t despair. Your body responds to exercise whether it’s 7 a.m. or 7 p.m. Workout simplification and diversification allow you to train regardless of what you had planned and where you had planned it. If you were set to hit the weight room at 6 p.m., but had to work late, then pump-up at home. A few dumbbells are inexpensive, but they can make a difference on days you don’t get to the gym. Do some push-ups, crunches and stretches. Bike around the neighborhood. Take a swim. Do something, anything. Just put those muscles in motion! Of all the investments you’ll make, a commitment to regular exercise will reap the greatest benefits. Life is too short to miss out on being all that you can be.
