THE COVER

Fighting for Independence Jason Dottley is Taking Over You may have heard of Jason Dottley via various media outlets during his divorce from big film producer Del Shores. When we spoke with Dottley’s PR representative, he told us that they’re very proud of what Dottley is doing for both others and himself. He’s been fighting for his life back through a lengthy divorce from Del Shores (Sordid Lives, Queer as Folk, Dharma & Greg and more). He’s fighting with the transformation from “twink” to “damn” (note: he’s always been attractive, but Dottley has clearly been turning it out as of late). He’s fighting for success in the music and entertainment business. He’s fighting for gay rights through his very inspirational Love Story project. In every way imaginable, Jason Dottley is fighting his way to the top. We had the opportunity to speak with Dottley about the fantastic performance of his latest single (“It’s Our Night”), the Love Story project, and of course, the elephant in the room.

I know that you recently divorced film producer Del Shores, and I know that you two were married for some time. What has the journey been like since the divorce? Journey sounds like a carefully planned vacation. Gay divorce is more like a trip to Sea World where you have to jump through the flaming hoops. I’ve learned a great deal about myself, relationships, communication and the importance of privacy.

I think the Love Story project is something that the gay community really needs and benefits from. It removes the stigmas and the stereotypes of the LGBT community by sharing real love stories. This is crucial, especially in a time when we’re fighting for equality. What’s the feedback been like so far? Thank you. I agree entirely. The feedback so far has been 100% amazing. From all ages, many countries, men and women, everyone seems to truly get the project and understand the value of its message. I’m very grateful!

The video for “It’s Our Night” has a nice direction to it. I like that it tells a story -- videos rarely do anymore -- and really, it just has a playful, fun vibe to it. What was the concept for the video and song, and why did you decide to go the route of telling a story instead of just opting for a typical sexy beach setup? All of Mariah’s wind machines and beaches were already rented and there isn’t a prop in L.A. that Miley hasn’t licked so my hands were tied. I grew up in the MTV era. Music videos were

I’ve noticed that you’ve definitely developed an additional layer of sex appeal. Manlier perhaps? Less twink-ish? Not that you were a twink before. It takes two seconds looking at Justin Bieber to realize the bar for “twink” has risen to unreachable heights, so I hired fitness guru Jennifer Ashby and over 90 days, she literally changed my body and my life. I can bench press 3 Justin Bieber’s these days.

events. Madonna set the bar. Actually she created the bar. Then something happened. Music videos became so boring. I wanted to make a video that was an event. I also wanted to act. My director Nicholas Lam truly crafted the story. The video takes place in the past and the future. In the past, I’m an assassin out to kill the beautiful blonde bad girl. The first time through life, I was successful, but this time, her boyfriend has spent his life tracking me and creating a way to time travel and save the love of his life. I wrote the song about someone I was in love with after my marriage, and I’m actually wearing his name in the video. But you must be super clever and know a lot about my life to catch it.

Anything else coming down the pipeline? Getting back to acting is 2014’s #1 priority. A move to London looks like it’s happening in January, as well. One last question: boxers or briefs? Briefs. Tight ones.

Speaking of videos, what can people expect from your new music video for the Love Story project? Well now you’ve got me thinking “Sexy Beach.” Love Story is a video that is not about me. It’s about the images of gay couples from around the world. It’s about shining a huge light on love. It’s truly touching. What music are you listening to at the moment? Eminem’s new album is amazing and “Work Bitch” is my theme song every minute of the day. And everything Rihanna touches.

THE WEEK

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Janelle Monáe and Gladys Knight ____________________ Thursday

11/21

Buddy Guy and Jonny Lang oFor one night only, these two living blues stars play the Adrienne Arsht Center. After 60 years in the industry, Buddy Guy has certainly more than earned his title as a blues legend. His influence on the musicians of his generation is extensive, including Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Eric Clapton. He pioneered the Chicago blues sound. Jonny Lang, on the other hand, is only 32, young enough to be Guy’s grandchild. Having already won a Grammy for Turn Around, Lang is a blues prodigy as much as Guy is a legend. Tonight these two different generations meet, bringing the soul and energy of the electrifying blues sound to Miami like never before. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center. 1300 Biscayne Blvd Miami, 33132.

11/23

The Electric Lady Janelle Monáe oJanelle Monáe’s sexuality has been a hot topic of her career, especially since some of her songs’ lyrics contain ambiguous hints at lesbian tendencies. In the press she has been evasive, at best, on answering such questions, but it doesn’t matter because with music as good as hers, the team she plays for is less important than the vocal offering. Her 2010 hit album Arachnoid became one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year, complete with the smash song “Tightrope”. Her current album The Electric Lady continues with her brand of R&B and soul. 8 p.m. Filmore Miami Beach Jackie Gleason Theater. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Living Legends: The Eagles oThe Eagles’ most popular song, “Hotel California”, deals with the excesses of Hollywood life in the 1970s. In it, a weary traveler checks into a tempting hotel that turns out to be a nightmare— sort of like a gay bar on a Friday night, a place you can check out of but never leave. Allegorical surrealistic epic songs aside, The Eagles is one of the most popular bands of their era, with seven number one singles, six Grammys, five American Music Awards, and six number one albums. Their 2013 tour coincides with a new documentary about the crew entitled The History of the Eagles. Recently, Don Henley proclaimed this tour possibly their last so try to catch them while you can. 8 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

The Iconic Gladys Knight oGladys Knight may be a codependent relational attachment type—what with her declaration that she’d move to Georgia with her beau because she’d “rather live in his world/than live without him in mine”—but that doesn’t make her music any less beautiful. Since her heyday rocking it out with The Pips to her role in the blockbuster hit song “That’s What Friends Are For”, Gladys Knight has established herself as one of the premiere legendary

Repticon oYou ever date a guy with a giant pet snake? No, not that kind of snake—the real kind. Well, he might be at this event, the premiere South Florida reptile and exotic pets show known as Repticon. Thousands of reptiles and exotic pets from the top breeders and educators in the world will be on display, showing off their dangerous personalities. THE WEEK continues on page 38

11/24

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis oTFinally, the world of rap doesn’t seem to hate as much as before, and a lot of that is thanks to Mackelmore and his hit summer song “Same Love”. In it Macklemore says such weirdly accepting (though still kind of homophobic) lyrics as “When I was in 3rd grade/I thought that I was gay/Cause I could draw”. After heavy rotation over the summer, the song has become a defining moment for gay rights in the hip-hop world. Tonight he’ll probably sing the song, you’ll be offended, but at least you’ll also kind of be like “Well, it’s so much better than him wanting us dead, which I believe Eminem has said before.” 7 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.cancellation. 8 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor o If you know who the Time Lord is then maybe you haven’t been on a date in a while. Or, you’re super hot and just kind of into Doctor Who (that’s a thing, right?). The uber-popular and uber-nerdy (but in a sexy kind of way, right?) television program turns 50 and celebrates with a special entitled “The Day of the Doctor”. The show will be screened in more than 75 countries. Hope you don’t have any computer problems this day—it’s pretty definite tech support will be “busy”. 7:30 p.m. The Regal Cypress Creek Station 16. 6415 N Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33309.

The Book of Mormon o The critically-acclaimed smash Broadway musical finally makes its long-awaited trip to our fair city. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Tony-winning The Book of Mormon follows the missionary adventures of Elder Kevin Price and Elder Arnold Cunningham as they try to spread their religious fervor in Uganda.

Lampooning both the Mormon religion and traditional Broadway musicals, The Book of Mormon received unanimous critical adoration for its plot, choreography, and score. It starts its run tonight. 8 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

11/27

Wilton Drive oWednesday nights are usually hump nights, but this week is a little bit different, what with a delicious Thanksgiving meal a mere 24 hours away. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the most active party nights of the year. Take advantage by stopping at the multitudes of watering holes on The Drive: the newly-opened bar/lounge that’s appropriately named The Drive, George’s Alibi, Rumors, Village Pub, Bill’s, Ramrod…the list goes on and on. You can even nurse your hangover the next day with football games and turkey legs. Some bars open as early as noon. Various locations. Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Dining Out: Can You Really Make Healthy Choices? by Tom

Bonanti

o

Whether you are searching for the right career, scoping out a new place to live or planning a vacation, life is all about making right choices. Building your body also requires you to make key decisions. Finding a great gym, making the time to workout and varying your routines all require proper planning. While these are crucial factors, it’s your nutritional choices that will make or break you. Eating “right” requires knowledge and planning. Certainly the best nutritional strategy is to shop for and prepare your own healthy meals consisting of good clean organic foods. There is nothing better than a diet consisting of complex, low-glycemic index carbohydrates, lean fresh protein sources and very low amounts of polyunsaturated fat. While the above plan is ideal, the reality is, most of us spend a lot of time eating out or eating on the run in restaurants and fast food joints. A few visits to these places every week will pile on the pounds in no time! Here are a few pointers about restaurant eating that can keep you lean and on track with your fitness goals. Breakfast or brunch on the weekend with friends can be a pleasure, but in one sitting you can literally consume your daily calorie requirements of fats and carbs. Ask for egg beaters when ordering an omelet. Avoid bagels and Danish and opt instead for an English muffin or a couple of pieces of whole grain toast. Try unbuttered grits with a little fresh salsa instead of hash browns.

50

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

Avoid processed meats like bacon and sausage. A sandwich for lunch sounds simple and convenient. Yet, it’s not just burgers that are lethal, those deli sandwiches can be just as deadly. Between those slices of bread lurk some serious calorie pitfalls like mayo, salad dressing, several servings of salty cold cuts, and loads of fattening cheese. Choose whole-grain breads or better yet, a wrap and grilled chicken instead of ham, roast beef, tuna or chicken salad. Only order half a sandwich and avoid those super sizes. Pasta is good energy food, but request a half portion and you’ll save hundreds of calories. Eat pasta earlier in the day so that the carbs fuel the rest of the day’s activities. If it’s available, choose a healthy whole-wheat pasta or spinach pasta for a more fiber-rich dish and pair it with a lean protein grilled portion of chicken or fish. Avoid cheesy calorie- dense dishes like ravioli, manicotti and lasagna. Sushi is a great healthy choice when dining out. Broiled fish, steamed veggies, edamame and tuna, yellowtail and salmon sashimi are all tasty and light Japanese fare. But unless you want to look like a sumo wrestler, steer clear of tempura and agemono, which indicate deep-fried. The time you put into your workouts is crucial. Yet it’s what you put into your mouth that will make or break your physique. For more tips on healthy choices contact TrainerTomB@aol.com! Check out www.pumpnincgym. com or call (954) 557 1119.
