Wilton Drive Holiday Shopping Guide All of Your Needs In One Place Wilton Drive is a treasure trove of veritable goods. We all love the restaurants. The bars. The thrift shops. But when it comes time to do our shopping, a good chunk of us head to the malls. We all love to support local businesses, but when the holidays arrive, they seem to completely slip our minds. This year, try something new. Instead of grabbing that Target gift card, check out our shopping guide and nab something special for your loved ones.

Rock Hard
Maybe those phallic candies from To The Moon weren’t dirty enough for your dirty friends. Maybe they need something way kinkier. Out of the Closet
Okay so maybe you aren’t too thrifty. Maybe thrifting for clothes just isn’t your thing. But remember, it’s the holidays: you aren’t shopping for yourself! Your eclectic DIY friend might ap-

preciate a unique gift from a thrift store way more than another Whole Foods gift card. Part of the proceeds go towards AHF, which provides people with free, confidential health services, so any item purchased is the gift that keeps on giving. Out of the Closet. 954-358-5580. 2097 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.
Boomerang’s Thrift Store
If Out of the Closet doesn’t have that one unique item you need, head over to Boomerang’s Thrift Store. Mix Menswear
Mix Menswear carries a very competitive selection of clothing. The recently expanded store houses everything from jackets and blazers to swimsuits and dress shoes. THE WEEK
Art Basel, Dave Coulier, and Local Holiday Cheer
____________________ ____________________ Thursday
12/5 Saturday
Dave Coulier oCut it out, man, because the king of that catchphrase is coming to South Florida for a night of impressions, jokes, and nostalgic reminisces of simpler times. Known for his uber-popular stint on Full House back in the early 1990s, Dave Coulier has since made numerous appearances on shows like The Surreal Life and Skating with Celebrities. He also had a tumultuous relationship with then unknown singer Alanis Morissette (with rumors of “You Outta Know” being about him). Unlike Bob Saget, though, Dave Coulier relies on cleaner jokes, having once even been a part of a comedy troupe entitled The Clean Guys of Comedy. Cartoons are his specialty, so get ready for some Bullwinkle impressions. With any luck, the jackalope may make an appearance. 8 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S Rosemary Ave, Suite 250, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Art Basel oArtists from across the country descend upon beautiful Miami for a weekend-long citywide art exhibition. Founded by gallerists in 1970, Art Basel focuses on the role that galleries play in the nurturing of artists, and the development and promotion of visual arts. Art Basel is the gold standard for art shows through its rigorous selection of galleries and museum quality pieces. It is also a weekend for some of the more creative parties thrown, what with so many artists in town living it up. More information about the shows and events can be found online at artbasel.com. Various times.
Gay Men’s Chorus: Holiday in Full Swing oThe Gay Men’s Chorus brightens up each holiday season with their annual Christmas show. This Year, Holiday in Full Swing, combines the various voices ranges of Fort Lauderdale gay men and swing music. The South Florida Jazz Pride Ensemble will make a special guest appearance for this one night only concert. There’s singing, dancing, and a whole of fun. Support the local arts and come see this one of a kind show. 8 p.m. The Horvitz Auditorium at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Driving Miss Daisy oMiss Daisy’s descent from cranky old Jewish lady to Alzheimer’s-ridden, guilt-ridden old lady makes its debut at the Delray Beach Playhouse. In Alfred Uher’s beloved Pulitzer-prize winning play, Ms. Daisy is unable to drive herself anymore so her son hires a black driver who must deal with both deep South racism and Miss Daisy’s cantankerous ways. By the end they become dear friends as the Civil Rights Era blossoms around them. The film version won a few Oscars back in 1989, much to the chagrin of radical director Spike Lee (who made disparaging comments of supposed latent racism in the script). 8 p.m. Delray Beach Playhouse. 950 NW 9th St, Delray Beach, 33444.
Michel Bell and Catherine Matejka oCruise ship staples Michel Bell and Catherine Matejka bring their immense talents to The Colony Hotel in West Palm Beach. This married couple has toured the country with their humorous singing talents. Bell was a Broadway superstar, performing in such musicals as Showboat and Civil War where he won an Outer Critic’s Circle Award. A former member of The Fifth Dimension, he also has performed with Frank Sinatra and Julie Andrews. Matejka has performed internationally as a piano soloist and chamber musician. 8:30 p.m. The Colony Hotel. 155 Hammon Ave, Palm Beach, 33480.

Johnny’s Amateur Strip Contest oWe all know you’ve got the goods. You’ve been working out at the gym for a while, trying your hardest to compete with all the other muscular gods of Fort Lauderdale. Or maybe you’re a bear and you’re proud of your belly. Either way, it’s time to show it all off and be rewarded for your dedication. The ultimate source of approval comes in Johnny’s Amateur Strip Contest in which you could be the lucky winner of big cash prizes. Bring that oil and bronzer and enjoy 3$ L.I.T.’s and no cover all night. 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Johnny’s Fort Lauderdale. 1116 W Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33312. Brazilian Voices o The chorus honors the Brazilian music tradition, paying tribute to the rhythms, composers and performers of bossa nova, samba and pop. The ensemble makes their stop here in Fort Lauderdale after touring Brazil, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. Critically acclaimed and internationally popular, they won the Brazilian International Press Award five times and have been nominated for a Latin Grammy. 10 a.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Led by Maestro James Brooks-

Bruzzese and Cathedral Choir Conductor Robin McEachern, this concert is a delightful mix of full symphonic orchestral arrangements and chorus. Toy Story 4: A Night of Giving oThis annual charity event in Wilton Manors is a classy, festive time for professionals to give while socializing. Each participant brings an unwrapped gift benefitting both Kids in Distress and a local Battered Women’s Shelter. There will be plenty of presents to bid on, as well, with both a silent and live auction. A free drink starts the night. All raised money benefits local Fort Lauderdale charities including SunServe, Broward House, the Jessica June Center, and Grateful Paws Dog and Cat Rescue. Start the Christmas season right by helping the community. 7 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

The Drive
An Intimate Staple for Wilton Manors
o
Whenever a new bar/restaurant opens tasty paired perfectly with sauteed onions, up on Wilton Drive, it’s immediately a mushrooms and a dijon mustard spread. My friend’s bruschetta was pretty much just your hot topic. We’ve seen it recently with standard bruschetta, but you can’t beat the Village Pub, Rumors and 13|Even. Each space had some hype before they even competitive price of $4. opened their doors. The Drive is the newThe turkey & apple panini was everything est bar to open up in the “gayborhood,” I wanted: melted brie cheese, sliced granny smith apples, and homemade apple butter and it’s no exception to the rule. For months on a whole wheat baguette. The apple butter people pondered what it would look like as a finished product. Conveniently located near was just the icing on the cake (or panini). According to my companion, the cheese panini favorites such as The Manor and Rumors, The was savory, gooey, and perfectly crisp. For his Drive has some serious competition. The layout is similar to that of Alibi cheese selection, he ordered a combination of cheddar and gouda (they also offer or Rosie’s. The inside has an open havarti dill, fontina, provolone, swiss layout with mirrored walls, chanand of course, american). neling some serious Studio 54 THE DRIVE Our eyes were bigger than our vibes. TRAVEL
Holidays at Sea by
Rick Karlin
o
While there’s something to be said for being surrounded by family during the holiday season, there’s also something wonderful about being surrounded by a big blue ocean. Taking a cruise during the holidays can be a nice change of pace, or a reason to escape all the pressures of a family gathering. If you need an excuse, tell the folks you won the cruise, a little white lie never hurt anyone. If you do decide to spend the holidays on a cruise, there are some things to consider. Think about whether you’d like to spend holidays in port or at sea. Ships on a regular weekly schedule are likely to maintain their normal itineraries, so you may end up in a port on Christmas Day when everything’s closed but the cathedral and the beach. However, since the tourist dollar is so important, especially in these difficult economic times, many places choose to stay open. Carnival, for one, tells us that all the islands it visits during the holiday season keep stores open and excursions running so as not to lose out on those tourist dollars. Packing for a holiday cruise can be a little different from packing for a regular cruise. You’ll want to bring special holiday outfits for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In addition to your tuxes and party dresses, you might consider accessories such as Santa hats, reindeer antler headbands or other festive items you might want to wear. For Christmas or Hanukkah, consider decorating your cabin to get in the holiday spirit. Decorate your cabin doors with a wreath (pack one of those hooks that goes over the top of the door), to make your cabin’s interior more festive, pack a small artificial tree (disassemble it for easy packing), electric menorah (you can’t light candles in your cabin), strings of lights or stockings. I’ve found Vacations to Go (vacationstogo. com, 800-338-4962) an easy to navigate site for searching for bargains on cruises. When looking for cruises departing from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, the ports of call tend to be heavily skewed toward those islands that are not particularly friendly
48
guymag.net
theguymag
theguymag
toward GLBT travelers. However, after eliminating those cruises I was still able to come up with some pretty good deals should you want to spend the holidays aboard the high seas. The cruises that stop in the Bahamas on these cruises only stop at islands owned by the cruise lines. Celebrity offers five nights on its Constellation departing December 23, making stops in Key West and Cozumel, Mexico. An inside cabin runs $479, Florida residents can get one with an ocean view for $655. Princess Cruises’Ruby Princess hits the Eastern Caribbean for four nights departing December 22. Most of the time is spent at sea with one stop at on Princess Cay (the cruise line’s private island). This is a real bargain with interior rooms going for $279 and ocean view room just $20 more, even a balcony room is just $399. Holland America’s Zuiderdam sails out of Ft. Lauderdale on December 20 for a seven night cruise, with stops at Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands, San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Half Moon Cay, Bahamas. An inside cabin will run $599, one with an ocean view $649, and a balcony cabin is $799. The line’s Westerdam ships out for a seven night Eastern Caribbean cruise departing December 21. The ship stops at Grand Turk Island, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Philipsburg, St. Maarten and Half Moon Cay. This cruise is a little less expensive than the Zuiderdam’s with interior cabins running $429, ocean views $499, and balcony for $549. At these prices you may want to splurge on a suite, only $799. If you purchase a resident rate fare, you will be required to present a valid driver’s license or stateissued ID at the pier to prove residency. The prices shown are US dollars per person, based on double occupancy, and subject to availability. They include port charges but do not include airfare or (where applicable) airport or government taxes or fees. FITNESS
Training and Diet Survival Tips for the Holidays by Tom
Bonanti
o
Falalalala! The holidays are upon us! Before you make your list and check it twice, do me one favor. Make a resolution not to let your fitness goals suffer by becoming lax with your training and nutrition. Promise? Of course you can’t turn down every holiday invitation just to keep your body building regime. But you do need to be aware of your potential to slide, and plan for those situations. Have some fun, but don’t overdue it. Remember, it’s not uncommon for most guys to pack on a whopping 5 to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day! Use moderation when drinking, and by all means avoid the costly and even deadly mistake of drinking and driving. Make healthy choices at the buffet table. Don’t let holiday stress or lack of time keep you from training. Here are my best and most practical holiday survival tips. Exercise first – Worried that you won’t have time to squeeze in your workout? Consider shifting your training. If evenings and weekends are too booked, try weights and cardio first thing in the morning. You may have to get up earlier, but you have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve jumpstarted your metabolism and burned off some serious calories. Consolidate your workouts – Train two body parts with a continuous superset technique. For instance, you can train your tri’s and bi’s with alternating sets. Pair dumbbell curls with dumbbell

triceps extensions for three to four sets. Kick some ass – You may not have a full hour to train because of errands and obligations, but you can have a kick-ass workout in 20-30 minutes. The key here is to use less weight and perform more reps and sets in rapid succession. Move from station to station quickly and avoid distractions. Recuperate – Take the holiday season off. Many pro body builders follow a five months-on, one month-off routine. One of the best ways to build muscles is to give them a chance to rest, recover and grow, but remember, stay active and eat wisely. Train on the road – One of the biggest problems during the holidays and even at other times of the year, when you are traveling, is a lack of access to a gym. Join a gym for a day or a weekend. Training for a day or two in another gym can be inspiring! Simplify Workouts – If you’re on the road and you can’t get to the gym, you can still do crunches, lunges and leg lifts for the abs and butt. Try using your own body weight to do push ups and chair dips for chest and tri’s. Use the stairs when traveling or sightseeing. Keep that hot body all year round and combat holiday stress while you are at it. For more tips contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. Checkout my gym at www.pumpnincgym.com. Holiday gift certificates available! Contact Tom in Ft.Lauderdale at (954) 557-1119.
