The Best Albums of 2013 by
Grant James
o
2013 was a massive year for music. From Icona Pop’s phenomenal debut album to Beyonce’s sneaky last-minute top secret release, this was truly a year of surprises. We’ve put together a list of the year’s best album releases that encompasses everything from pop to rock, and everything in between.
spot and writer. Before she could even catch her breath, Charli was back in the studio recording additional material. Her second album is expected for a spring 2014 release, following on the heels of her lead single “Superlove.”
This Is... Icona Pop by Icona Pop She & Him Vol. 3 by She & Him
Zooey Deschanel has been a busy girl. While “New Girl” was trending on TV, Deschanel returned with new material this year in the form of She & Him, her duo with musician M. Ward, titled “She & Him Vol. 3.” The sunny, carefree pop songs are so perfectly paired with Deschanel’s sweet vocals, providing the perfect feel of summer year-round.
Icona Pop also saw their debut album release in 2013, titled “This Is...Icona Pop.” The album, which includes their smash-hit “I Love It ft. Charli XCX” and recent single “All Night,” was a brave, fun venture for the Swedish duo. The video for “All Night” serves the return of the NY ball scene, setting the tone for the dance-worthy record. The pair have also really taken a liking to their LGBT fan base, speaking out for equality and various other issues.
Overgrown by James Blake True Romance by Charli XCX
British pop star Charli XCX surprised a lot of people this year, including us. The long-lost Spice Girl gained recognition via Icona Pop’s smash hit “I Love It,” which she was featured on as both guest

Sultry English R&B singer James Blake took the world by storm with his sophomore album titled “Overgrown.” The critically acclaimed album features a blend of sleek, sophisticated beats that are paired every so carefully with James’ rich vocals, providing listeners with an extremely immersive sound. guymagtube
we all know that isn’t the case, with 400k sales in the first few days of its release.
The 20/20 Experience by Justin Timberlake
Settle by Disclosure
Brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence have single-handedly (or double-handedly if you would) revived house music. Their debut album, “Settle,” made a name for the duo, who are set to spin next month at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Each track features different guest vocals, giving each song a fresh, different sound. The album has helped out said vocalists with starting individual solo careers, including Jessie Ware and Sam Smith, two of UK’s best new artists.
Who would have expected that Justin Timberlake would have a comeback? We had given up hope for the mouseketeer as we assumed he was ending that part of his career, focusing on acting instead. However, Timberlake surprised us in 2013 with a two-part album titled “The 20/20 Experience.” The throwback R&B album featured a lot of surprises as well as radio-friendly singles that were both marketable and interesting. The two highly successful albums have effectively made Timberlake a household name yet again.
Beyonce by Beyonce
Beyonce is a sneaky, sneaky bitch. Her newest release, a self-titled “visual album,” gives listeners not only 14 previously unreleased, unannounced tracks, but 17 music videos as well. True that Beyonce recently broke the internet with the release, which was silently dropped last week, but we can’t help but respect Queen B for it. She’s completely changed the game, forcing people to take in the album as a whole instead of leading with a strong single and heavy promotions. While she jokes that she probably wouldn’t even make any money from the release on track “Haunted,” guymag.net

THE WEEK
Miley Cyrus, David Sedaris and Bells in Boyland
____________________ Thursday
12/19
9 to 5 oDolly Parton realizes just how hard our lives are out in the working world. The young gay professional has got to get his paycheck, yet, at the same time, “the man” can sure be a bitch. The 1980 film starring Ms. Parton and a pre-Drexell’s Class Dabney Coleman set the standard for comical revenge-onbosses films. Here, it’s been made into a musical, with a score written by Ms. Parton herself, as a trio of women conspire against their boss to make woman-friendly changes in the workplace. Broward Stage Door Theater. 8 p.m. 8036 W Sample Road, Coral Springs, 33065.

Y100 Jingle Ball oIt was a shock, certainly, when Time named Pope Francis the Person of the Year ahead of Miley Cyrus. Let’s be perfectly frank: Miley owned 2013. From tearful, heartfelt feline renditions of “Wrecking Ball,” to smoking joints on stage, to that VMA performance, to feuding with an emotionally unstable Sinead O’Connor...If Miley wasn’t making headlines, it wasn’t the last half of 2013. What
better way to cap off the year in Miley than with seeing her, live, on stage, at the Y100 Jingle Ball? If it’s anything like her recent Jingle Ball performance in LA, expect twerking Santas. Not only is she the opening act, but appearing as well is, none other than Mr. Inappropriate himself, Robin Thicke. Other acts include Ariana Grande, Austin Mahone, Demi Lovato, Armin Van Buuren, Enrique Iglesias, Fall Out Boy, Flo Rida, Avril Lavigne, and a pre-event celebration at 2 p.m. on Plaza with Fifth Harmony, Travie McCoy, Tegan & Sara, and Jake Miller. 7 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.
Chris Isaak oRemember that sultry Herb Ritts directed music video with Helena Christensen frolicking with that somewhat sexy, almost Elvis-esque guy? Well, that was Chris Isaak singing one of 1990’s most popular singles, “Wicked Game.” Since those 15 minutes of fame and the accompanying successful album Heart-Shaped Box, Isaak has been keeping busy with more albums (16 in total), while appearing in a few films (including The Silence of the Lambs), and starring in his own critically acclaimed TV series. Tonight he sings the hits and some traditional Yule favorites. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401. THE WEEK continues on page 36

The Santaland Diaries oDavid Sedaris is sort of a literary gay superhero. His books become national bestsellers without a hitch, populating the shelves of every airport bookstore in the US. Sedaris’ career began with one singular broadcasting on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition in which he read his famous essay The SantaLand Diaries about his job as a Christmas elf at a Macy’s department store. From there, he shot to fame with collections of essays like Me Talk Pretty One Day and Naked. Here, Jamie Morris steps into the Sedaris role for the play adaptation. 8 p.m. Empire Stage. 1140 N. Flagler Drive, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.
Miami Gay Men’s Chorus o“Bells in Boyland”, the title of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus’ 2013 holiday production, sounds about the most accurate title possible for a show promising an amazing handbell choir. MGMC has been around since 1999 and usually puts on about 2-3 major productions a year. Currently under the artistic direction of Anthony Cabrera, the chorus has highlighted the diversity of the gay community, with lawyers, bankers, realtors, stockbrokers, teachers, and even entrepreneurs ranging in ages from early 20s to mid 80s singing their little gay hearts out. 8 p.m. Colony Theatre. 1040 Lincoln Rd, Miami Beach, 33139.
ment from Brandano Designs. This annual South Florida tradition is a long drive of Christmas extravaganza. And what’s the year 2013 without something, anything, in 3D? Well, the 2013 Holiday Fantasy of Lights offers a 3-D component for only $3 for 3 glasses. So now that glowing, ferocious Santa can really look like he’s coming right at you. 6 p.m. Tradewinds Park. 3600 W. Sample Rd, Coconut Creek, 33066.
____________________ Wednesday Wilton Drive oIt’s Christmas and you’re alone. The family is somewhere far away, and you didn’t bother to buy a plane ticket. Your boyfriend or girlfriend left you a good six months ago. It’s just rough to get out of bed. Work’s been bleak (recession and all), and no one except your dentist sent you a holiday card. Well, stop moping. Get to Wilton Drive on Christmas and drink. Stop at the Alibi, sing a few carols, and have some Jagermeister. Stop at Bill’s, order a few tequila shots, and toast to the holidays. Pretty soon you’ll be hallucinating three ghosts telling you to change your ways, or some angel reminding you what the world would be like if you were never born. Finally, go to Village Pub and drink some more. It’s the holidays after all: You deserve it! Establishments all open at various times. Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors, 33305.

The Nutcracker oWhat’s Christmas without a little Nutcracker? Not like that! Tchaikovsky’s famous Christmas tradition comes alive in Miramar for its 39th annual performance. With over 100 international dancers this year, the magical production from Ballet Etudes Company features lavish sets and scenery, colorful costuming, exquisite lighting, superb choreography, and delightful theatrical effects. All that and a handsome, dancing toy soldier? The Nutcracker is gay Christmas at its finest. 8 p.m. Miramar Cultural Center. 2400 Civic Center Place, Miramar, 33025.

TRAVEL
Gifts for Travelers by

Anyone who’s flown on a plane with a screaming kid (is there ever a flight without one?) will recognize the value of Bose QuietComfort 20i noise cancelling headphones. Priced at $300, its noise cancelling rivals
full-sized headphones and it takes up almost no room. There’s an in-line mic/remote for music and call functions and “aware” mode allows ambient sound when listening to music or watching videos. Available at many retailers or from bose.com. “Don’t drink the water” is a common warning that can be disregarded with CamelBak All Clear’s UV purification system that turns any tap or clear natural water into potable drinking water in just 60 seconds. For more info, go to camelbak.com. Eagle Creek makes some of the most innovative and convenient packing tools on the market. Its Pack-It line helps compress items to maximize packing space, while it minimize wrinkles. The convertible bag is a teeny pouch weighing less than a pound, those folds out into a tote, backpack or duffel bag. For a look at the full line of products, priced from as low as $22, go to shop. eaglecreek.com. There are times when you want to take a photo and don’t have anybody you can ask. That’s when the Tiltpod comes in handy. It easily attaches to a camera or small phone, has a magnetic base that pivots and comes with a wrist. It is reasonably priced at $14.95 at gomite.com/products/tiltpod. Kate Spade’s two-tone leather passport holder, comes with interior slots for a passport and three cards, plus a clear ID window and an exterior slot for stashing a boarding pass, making getting through security a breeze. Available at saturday.

com for $50. Maybe it’s my inner hippie speaking, but I love to give a gift that gives back. The compact, seven-ounce WakaWaka solar charger juices up a phone in just a few hours and has a built-in light that can shine for more than 60 hours. Best of all? For each charger purchased, the company donates one to the typhoon relief effort in the Philippines. Available from wakawaka. com for $69. Remove all doubt as to which is their suitcase at the luggage carousel with a gift of Jonathan Adler’s “This Is Mine” leather luggage tag. A snap closure allows a space to put personal info. Available at joanthanadler.com for $38. Hotel room bedding can be suspicious, even in the best of places. Let them put a layer of silk between their skin and unfamiliar bedding with a DreamSack (which comes in its own 8” x 4” pouch). Made of silk with a built-in pocket for a pillow. It is machine washable, quick-drying and only weighs 6 oz. Flight Spray helps prevent viral infections by creating an unsuitable environment for inhaled germs to reproduce. Both are available at magellans.com. Your gift recipient will never have to pay for overweight luggage again with the Balanzza digital luggage scale. It’s small enough to pack and strong enough to weigh up to 100 pounds. It indicates pounds and kilograms making it ideal for the international traveler. Available at many retail stores and web sites for less than $20. Laugh all you want about the Home Shopping Network, but for every bedazzled denim jacket for plus sized ladies, there’s a terrific product. One of my favorites is the Grid-It! Organizer. Its compact size makes it easy to slip into a briefcase or backpack and ends rummaging around for stuff that falls to the bottom of the bag. It’s only $19.95 and available in a plethora of colors at hsn.com. My final entry comes from one of my favorite sites, Flight 001. “Airline: Style At 30,000 Feet” is a fascinating book examining every aspect of airline style, from the interior design of planes to the days when flight attendants wore haute couture instead of polos and khakis. It’s only $14.95 at flight001.com.

FITNESS
Holiday Humbug? Exercise It Away! by Tom
Bonanti
o
Nearly all of us have had the “blues”, but for some people these moods continue for weeks, months or even years. This condition which affects how people feel about themselves – the way they think about things, how they eat and sleep is called depression. Believe it or not, the holidays with all of their media hype, and tinsel can cause more people to be depressed than any other time of the year. There are basically two types of depression. Major depression has a combination of symptoms that interfere with your ability to work , sleep, eat, and enjoy pleasurable activities. Episodes of major depression may occur once, but more commonly they reoccur several times in a lifetime. Dysthymia, a milder form of depression, involves long- term chronic symptoms that, although not disabling, keep a person from feeling good or functioning well. This type of person is more prone to suffer from major depression later on than any other. Depression is found in people of all ages. Genetics can play a part, although depression can occur in those with no family history of the illness. Serious medical illnesses such as stroke, cancer, and hormonal disorders can trigger depression. Others prone to the illness include people who are overwhelmed by stress as well as those going through a traumatic event such as the death of a loved one, the breakup of a relationship, or the loss of a job. Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness and guilt. Often

there is a loss of interest in pleasurable activities as well as decreased energy and fatigue. Depressed people also report difficulty concentrating, frequent insomnia or over sleeping. Thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts are not uncommon. During the holidays many of these feelings worsen as the person experiences the world noisily celebrating as he or she feels shut out and worthless. If you have symptoms of depression, get yourself a physical exam. If your doctor finds no physical cause, then have him or her refer you to a qualified mental health counselor who can lead you through a psychological evaluation. For many people, a combined treatment plan works best: an anti-depressant for symptom relief, and talk therapy to learn better ways to cope with depression or the causes of depression. As far as exercise and working out, you guessed it! They are one of the best, and most inexpensive ways to combat that case of Holiday Humbug. Vigorous physical activities like swimming, biking, hiking and lifting tend to increase your body’s production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers. These are the same hormones that are released after a really good orgasm. How cool is that? This holiday season, why not stay active, happy and yes, horny!? Your friends will thank you, you’ll burn more calories and you’ll avoid becoming the proverbial Scrooge. Questions about this weeks column or fitness and exercise in general?
