New Years Eve: Parties, Parties, Parties by

Grant James

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration. After all, we’ve survived another year. Praise Beyonce. NYE is also a time for amateur drinkers to come out of the cracks, descending upon every bar in the tricounty area. Thus, the road is littered with seasoned alcoholics and amateur drinkers, so we here at Guy Magazine ask that you don’t text and drive, know your limit when drinking, and if all else fails, call a cab. Now, if you are a responsible adult and are willing to brave the trenches, NYE is offering a fantastic slew of parties. There’s concerts, events, parties, and of course, the traditional complimentary champagne toasts at midnight. Below are some of the best events worth attending.

Pitbull at American Airlines Arena

The Miami legend spends the last day’s of 2013 with his hometown people, singing his best hits, including his classic duet with Ke$ha “Timber”— featuring the ingenious line, “It’s going down, I’m yelling timber.” 9 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Macy Gray at Casino Miami

The once crack-addicted Macy Gray rings the New Year in with hopefully less of a bang than year’s prior. The “I Try” singer supports her recent Covered release, which contains R&B-tinged cover versions of classic moody love songs. 9:30 p.m. Casino Miami Jai-Alai. 3500 NW 37th Ave, Miami, 33142.

Lips Masquerade Ball

The ultimate in drag dining celebrates 2014 with a masquerade ball hosted by Diva. A 3-course gala pre-fixe dinner starts at $35. The drags will flirt, flaunt, and maybe molest a diapered yet really hot man dressed as the New Year’s baby. TBA time. 1421 E Oakland Park Blvd, Oakland Park, 33334.

Debby Holiday at Rumors

Fierce rock musician Debby Holiday performs live on Rumors stage from 11:30-12:00 before the big ball is dropped. Drink specials include $2 domestics, $2.50 imports, and $1 schnapps. 11:30 p.m. Rumors Bar & Grill. 2426 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33304.

A Great Gatsby Themed Party at The Manor

Described as “a spectacular return to elegance and debauchery” on the official flyer, The Manor’s NYE party has taken The Great Gatsby approach this year. Expect high class thrills at this wild party, with 1920’s style entertainment from Pepper Mashay, and others. For more information on tickets, visit themanorcomplex.com. 10 p.m. The Manor. 2345

A Very Chi Chi LaRue New Year’s Eve at Boardwalk

The queen of porn, Chi Chi LaRue, will be gracing South Florida with her fabulous presence at Boardwalk for a NYE celebration that’s sure to be full of surprises. LaRue will also be DJ’ing live on stage. (Bonus: a gourmet buffet dinner and free drinks are included in the ticket). Boardwalk 1721 N. Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33311. TBA time.

Lil Wayne at Cameo

The truest survivor of multiple bullet wounds (and trips to the ER for misuse of codeine) makes his way to Cameo nightclub for a night of rap, toasting, and the most expensive table in the country costing $100,000. Come on guys, splurge a little. Lil’ Wayne would appreciate it. He’s been through a lot. 9 p.m. Cameo Nightclub. 1445 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Wilton Drive

If you’re planning on drinking and don’t want to be cab-hopping for the entirety of the evening/ night/morning, Wilton Drive might be your best bet. Everything is within close range, and there are practically no covers (as of print) for any of the bars. Bill’s Filling Station plans to put on a drag show of epic proportions in addition to a complimentary champagne toast and a balloon drop at midnight. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. Sidelines will be offering a complimentary champagne toast, a balloon drop (with cash prizes inside as well as VIP packages and a trip to Vegas!), and a countdown of the top 100 music videos of 2013 via Billboard. As always, the football games will be playing on multiple TVs! Sidelines. 2031 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. New Moon has a DJ spinning from 10 p.m. to close in addition to a free champagne toast at midnight and surprise party favors. New Moon. 2440 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. Alibi will be taking over the parking lot NYE, with a VJ, the Ladies of Soul performing live on stage, and multiple outdoor bars. There is an expected attendance of 2000-3000 people. Alibi. 2266 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. Village Pub offers a complimentary toast at midnight as well as a variety of party favors. Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. The almighty Ramrod will be putting their usual underwear night on hold for a balloon drop at midnight complete with $800 in cash & prizes! THE WEEK

Forbidden Broadway and a NSFW Christmas Package ____________________ Thursday

12/26

A Christmas Package Not Suitable for Work oPerhaps there were many present to open on Christmas Day, but the biggest package waits for you at Ramrod’s Thursday night “Battle of the Bulge” contest. Men strip down to their underwear and engage in the most classic of all alpha male activities: whose “member” is bigger. Drink specials include $3 Bud and Bud Light. If you’ve got what it takes, show it off for the community and perhaps win the grandest prize of all: approval. 10 p.m. Ramrod. 1508 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Broadway Farce at its Finest oFrobidden Broadway has been a staple of the musical theater scene since its first revue performance back in 1982. Conceived, written and directed by Gerard Alessandrini, the show pokes fun at the current Broadway sampling. This year’s incarnation aims its daggers at Porgy and Bess, Anything Goes, Spamalot, Spiderman, Book of

Mormon, Once, Follies, and Nice Work If You Can Get It. Hilarious spoofing, outrageous costumes, and dead-on impressions make this a can’t-miss for any serious theater aficionados. 7:30 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

12/28

He’s Got Legs oThe ultimate otters make their way to the South Florida music scene, performing all of the hits at the Hard Rock. Since the 1970s ZZ Top has used their blues rock pedigree to become one of the more successful rock bands with legendary singles (and videos) such as “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man”. A new album entitled La Futura finds the band back in fine form, crafting blues-rock with blue-collar titles such as “I Gotsta Get Paid” and “Consumption”. Since one of their singles is used as the introductory theme for A&E’s now homophobic Duck Dynasty, signs asking for the otters to repent may be in order. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

THE WEEK ____________________ Gaysha Boys Abounding oDespite how you may have felt about our Olympic competitors, Asian countries are all the rage right now. Even better, they offer up many different stereotypes to explore: geisha girls, samurais, gongs, a last emperor. Now with Anime its own flourishing subculture, Asian culture may be close to its peak in popularity. Even gay culture is taking a shine to Asia, down at the Manor, for no discernible reason other than to celebrate, after Christmas, a unique and culturally rich world. Asian Fantasy night promises a spectacular array of Asian theme productions and visuals along with a performance by Erika Norell and tunes from DJ Terrance Lalley. The big question on everyone’s mind: how nutty will things get once they play ANY PSY song? 10 p.m. Manor Nightclub. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33304.

oThis world music festival includes electronic and pop music, DJs and musical newcomers. Headlining is The Wailers—the reggae members of the late Bob Marley’s legendary back-up band. They’re ben recording since the 60’s and were an important start to the international reggae scene. Albums include Exodus and Majestic Warriors. Also appearing are Miami roots-reggae rockers Jahfe, who sing about peach and faith in their socially conscious songs, along with Revolvr, DJ Irie, and Leslie Grace. 11 a.m. Bayfront Park. 301 N Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Voluptuous and Vivacious oSince his debut on “Last Comic Standing,” Ralphie May has made a name for himself with a relatable comedic genius poking fun at both his own corpulent frame and society’s hypocrisies. Voted one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch, Ralphie recently released his record-setting fourth one-hour special for Comedy Central, “Too Big to Ignore”. Not only will he be dishing out his humor, but he’s also dishing out some barbecue, with a new line of barbecue sauce named Fat Baby Jesus due out on Valentine’s Day. His shows tend to sell out, so buy early. 8 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

TRAVEL

New Year’s Traditions Across the World by

Rick Karlin

o

In the U.S., we all welcome the new year with enthusiasm, celebrating with fireworks and parades, carousing and toasts. Some cultures, though, have more unusual ways of ushering in the New Year. In many countries, there’s a shared belief that specific actions taken on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, or at the stroke of midnight, can influence the fate of the year to come. In the Philippines, for example, wearing polka dots and eating round fruits is supposed to ensure prosperity; in Spain, wolfing down grapes as the clock strikes midnight is thought to do the same. Some customs are about driving away the bad spirits of the past year. The purifying power of fire is often used in such ceremonies: the Scottish festival of Hogmanay, for instance, features parades of village men swing giant blazing fireballs over their heads as they march through the streets. In Panama, muñecos (effigies of popular celebrities) are burned on bonfires. Noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s Eve is believed to have originated in ancient times, when noise and fire were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring good luck. The Chinese use fireworks to spectacular effect in their New Year’s celebrations. Fireworks displays also take place in Rio de Janeiro and Sydney harbor, among many other locales. Other bad-spirit-banishing customs are less fiery and more fun, such as the Danish tradition of jumping off chairs at midnight. In Ireland they pound on the doors and windows of the house with bread to chase out evil spirits and ensure bread for the upcoming year. It is also a time to do away with the old and welcome the new. In the Netherlands, the Dutch burn bonfires of Christmas trees on the street and launch fireworks as a symbol of purging the old and welcoming the new. (It also seems a good way to make certain that people still don’t have their Christmas decorations up until spring.) In Japan, bonenkai or “forget-the-year parties,” are held to bid farewell to the problems and concerns of the past year and prepare for a new beginning. In Greece, New Year’s Day is also the Festival of St. Basil, one of the founders of the Greek Orthodox Church. A traditional food served on New Year’s Day is Vassilopitta, or St Basil’s cake. A silver or gold coin is baked inside the cake and it is believed that whoever finds the coin in their piece of cake will be especially lucky during the coming year. There is an Irish tradition of predicting the political future of the country by checking which way

46

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

the wind blows at midnight on New Year’s Eve. If the wind is from the west, there is a chance that good fortune will prevail that year. If the wind is from the east, bad luck is expected. This may date back to the days when sailing ships from England would come with the eastern winds, bringing with them English rule. Kissing under the mistletoe is a popular Christmas tradition, but mistletoe also is affiliated with New Year’s Eve in Ireland, where it was once handed out to ward off bad luck. It was also believed that if a woman slept with a sprig of mistletoe under her pillow on New Year’s Eve she would dream about her future husband. Many people dress up on New Year’s Eve. If not quite black tie and evening gowns, then at least “party clothes.” But what about underwear? In São Paulo, La Paz, and other parts of South America, people don brightly colored underpants to ring in the New Year. The traditions dictate red if they’re looking for love, and yellow for money. Even in America, the traditions we observe today all derive from customs related past events. The tradition of eating Hoppin’John, a dish of black-eyed peas, dates back to the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves from bondage, on Jan. 1, 1863. Black-eyed peas were a staple of the African Americans holding celebratory feasts at that time. Singing “Auld Lang Syne” the lyrics to which

guymagtube

can be traced to a poem translated and adapted from an ancient Scottish song by poet Robert Burns in 1796. The title literally translates as “old long since,” meaning “times gone by.” The song asks whether old friends and times will be forgotten and promises to remember people of the past with fondness. However, it was bandleader Guy Lombardo, who popularized the song, turning it into a New Year’s tradition, when his famous dance band, Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, played the song at midnight at a New Year’s Eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City in 1929. After that, Lombardo’s version of the song was played every New Year’s Eve from the 1930s until 1976 at the Waldorf Astoria. Even the seemingly American tradition of the New Year’s baby (a favorite costume for well-built young men), dates back to ancient Greece. It was their tradition at that time to celebrate their god of wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby in a basket, representing the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility. Early Egyptians also used a baby as a symbol of rebirth. Early Christians, the wet blankets of history, tried to denounce the practice as pagan, but the popularity of the baby as a symbol of rebirth forced the Church to reevaluate its position. The Church finally allowed its members to celebrate the new year with a baby, which was to symbolize the birth of the baby Jesus. The use of an image of a baby with a New Year’s banner was brought to America by early German settlers who guymag.net

had used the image for hundreds of years. The dropping of the ball at midnight in Times Square dates back to 1904. The New York Times had relocated to what was then known as Longacre Square. The publishers convinced the city to rename the neighborhood in its honor and threw an annual New Year’s Eve party with an elaborate fireworks display. The city banned the fireworks in 1907. The newspaper commissioned an electrician to devise a wood-and-iron ball illuminated with 100 light bulbs that was dropped from a flagpole at midnight. Lowered almost every year since then, the iconic orb has undergone several upgrades over the decades and now weighs in at nearly 12,000 pounds. In more recent years, various towns and cities across America have developed their own versions of the Times Square ritual, organizing public drops of items ranging from pickles in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania to a giant peach in Atlanta. Among other items dropped are; gumbo pots, guitars, olives, Moon Pies and even a giant tortilla chip. The most outrageous drop may be in Key West where, for more than a decade, locals have cheered outside a bar on Duval Street where a drag queen named Sushi seated in a red ruby high-heeled shoe is lowered from the balcony. No matter what we do though, the new year signifies hope for a new beginning, a chance to shrug off the worries, conflicts, and mistakes of the past and start anew. theguymag

FITNESS

Your 2014 Fitness Resolutions by Tom

Bonanti

o

Around this time of the year, everyone comes out with a list of things they need to do or should stop doing. These are called resolutions. So here it goes: If you’re already on the right track, keep it up! If you need to get started, what are you waiting for? Below are some healthy, realistic resolutions that everyone should consider doing throughout 2014 (and beyond).

Resolution #1: Eat a big healthy breakfast

Research shows that people who eat a good breakfast tend to take in more vitamins and minerals, and less fat and bad cholesterol. The Mayo Clinic recommends eating a variety of foods (steel cut oatmeal, whole grain toast, yogurt, fresh fruit) rich in protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. While you’re at it, try working out in the morning if your schedule permits. You may not have time to get to the gym, but a quick power walk or some other form of cardio will help you burn fat all day long and improve your mood as well!

Resolution #2: Revise your training regime

Periodize your training schedule for optimum results. Look upon the year ahead as one big macrocycle with goals and objectives such as getting your body fat down below say, 18% and putting on 5 lbs of muscle. Break down the bigger cycle into mesocycles of maybe 3 to 4 month periods of time. Asses your progress, vary your workouts, and stay consistent with your workouts. Read, take measurements throughout the year.

Resolution #3: Get more sleep

Getting 7 to 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep is essential to your physical and mental health. Besides making you cranky and exhausted, other symptoms of poor sleep or lack of sleep can be

48

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

depression, memory loss, migraine headaches, weight gain and paranoia. Turning in early tonight?

Resolution #4: Stay active

It’s a given that physical activity countless benefits, so why are 60% of all Americans sedentary? You don’t have to be a world champion athlete, but for god sakes get up and do something! Regular exercise (anaerobic weight training and aerobic cardio training) helps control weight, maintains healthy bones, muscles and joints, reduces the risk of high blood pressure and diabetes and death from heart disease. And yes, hard, consistent exercise is the only way you’re to get a hot body.

Resolution #5: Protect your skin

Your skin begins to age the moment you are born, so the best way to protect it and look younger is to limit your time in the sun. In order to avoid some of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which cause wrinkles and skin cancer, observe the following: always wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher; wear protective clothing; don’t deliberately sun-bathe; avoid sun exposure between 10 AM and 3 PM.

Resolution #6: Keep a positive outlook and be open to life

Mean, negative people gravitate toward one another. Negativity breeds negativity. Use your energy to do good. Channel your frustrations into your workouts. Volunteer for a worthwhile cause. Look forward to all life has in store for you. Contact trainertomb@aol.com with any fitness questions in 2014!
