TRAVEL
2014: On the Go, In The Know by
Rick Karlin
o
2013 was a year of reinvention for the travel industry. With the economy recovering, there were more travelers and hotels, airlines, cruise companies and travel agencies are helping innovate the way we travel with mobile check-in and using media to book and plan trips. For 2014, there are even more changes coming.
converting meeting rooms into pop-up offices for use by mobile workers, who are most comfortable in non-traditional Starbucks-like spaces. Marriott’s Workspace on Demand program and Westin’s Tangent, cater to 24-hour business travelers in need of “microstays” by renting out rooms on a day-use or even hourly basis.
Class Returns
Special Interest Destinations
JetBlue is abandoning its single-class identity and will soon introduce a new premium cabin, called Mint, with lie-flat seats. American Airlines is reconfiguring some of its business and first-class cabins. On the flip side, expect to see an increase of hip hostels. Upscale, hostels such as MOXY in Berlin, London and Frankfurt cater to the savvy budget-conscious traveler with chic rooms made for mingling and networking. Many airports are now offering VIP lounges on a pay as you go basis, rather than just for frequent fliers.
More Than Room Service
Hotels are rethinking room service. Hilton’s Midtown New York has a grab-and-go dining outlet, similar to what you find in airports, in its lobby. The Public Chicago, and NYC’s Hudson Hotel deliver meals in brown-bags. Hilton now offers do-it-yourself room service, Kimpton has grocery delivery service. Expect more hotels to change up their room service and in-room dining options with more organic and healthy food options, and 24hour on-site cafes.
Pop Up Offices
Hotels are starting to rent out work spaces,

Culinary tourists fly to Copenhagen specifically to eat at the acclaimed Noma restaurant. Gaston Acurio’s new Peruvian cuisine brings scores of travelers to Lima. More and more often travelers want to take local cooking classes, go with chefs to food markets, meet farmers, cheese makers and even stomp grapes, just like Lucy and Ethel. Speaking of Lucy and Ethel, tourism bureaus across the country are putting together trips to the film sites for television shows and movies. Now you can tour the locations for True Blood in Louisiana, visit the locations in Mitty or spend August in Osage County.
Beyond Our Borders
With the recession diminishing, travel within the U.S. has increased. As the economy loosens up more, expect to see more international travel (see sidebar for the Top 10 trends in U.S. and international travel).China and India look to be among the top travel markets for 2014. Brazil will draw tourists with the World Cup in June/July and the Summer Olympics in 2016. Many of those Brazil-bound travelers will add stops in other South American countries and there’ll be plenty of new airline service to get folks there, meaning air-fares
guymagtube
may drop. Going way beyond our borders, Virgin Galactic is primed to launch into space this year. Tickets are $250,000 and they already have more than 600 guests ready for training at Spaceport America in New Mexico. Of course, the biggest innovations will continue to be technology based. Wi-Fi, now free in most hotels, will also be available without charge in airports, on planes and eventually cruise ships. Whether it’s hotels using smart phones as keycards, digital luggage tags, e-marketing or social media-specific promotions, technology will figure into travel increasingly more. Aloft was the first hotel brand to let guests check-in to their rooms via text message and use their mobile phones in lieu of a keycard. Marriott allows mobile checkins for its Rewards customers. Expect to see more hotels follow suit in 2014.
Crowd Sourcing
New websites, such as the private dinner-party finders EatWith, Feastly and Traveling Spoon, allow home cooks to invite travelers into their private dining rooms. These peer-to-peer sites are also an attraction to thieves and grafters, so use with caution. Sites such as Routehappy.com help travelers find the nicest planes and seats for their route. Several airlines, including American, participate, letting all passengers, not just frequent fliers, bid for upgrades to first class.
Social Media Matters
Four Seasons Hotels has launched Pin.Pack. Go, using Pinterest as a tool for helping guests organize itineraries at their destinations and Loews Hotels launched a Twitter booking process. Travel apps will also get savvier this year, with a virtual concierge as well as appsthat help build itineraries and offer interest targeted maps. Finally, all these travel innovations don’t matter if you end up stuck in line at security. TSA is finally looking for new ways to make travel easier, and safer. TSA’s Precheck is just the beginning. Expect to find advanced on-line pre-check initiatives, and shorter security lines as well as passport kiosks in major airports.
Hot Spots
The World Cup, commemorations of World War I, D-Day and the fall of the Berlin Wall are some of the events that will make destinations such as Sochi, Brazil, Normandy and Berlin popular in 2014. The new high-speed rail service linking Paris and Barcelona takes just over six hours between the two cities. In the States, St. Louis’ 250th anniversary offers events planned throughout the year, Universal Park and Disney World will both
guymag.net
bring in visitors for new attractions. At Universal, the Hogwarts Express will shuttle tourists between the new (including a new restaurant, The Leaky Cauldron) and the existing Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions. Disney World opens a new roller coaster, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, in the spring. However, the hottest up and coming vacation destinations may not be on your radar now, but soon will be. Havana, Cuba, though officially still off-limits to U.S. travelers, should open up shortly. By the end of this decade, Havana will no longer be a city trapped in time. La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica is a draw because of its geological wonders, such as Arenal, an active volcano, Catarata de La Fortuna waterfall and the Tabacon Hot Springs. Ambergris Caye in Belize has just enough amenities to make it exciting, but is not so overdeveloped that you’re tripping over other tourists. The largest of Belize’s islands is popular with divers for Blue Hole, a 400-feet deep circle of limestone that teems with exotic fish and its Barrier Reef. Sapporo, Japan is the capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. It is a winter paradise, and was the site of the 1972 Olympic Winter Games, but is enjoyable in warmer weather for beautiful terrain. A foodie’s paradise, a visit to the rameninspired theme park is a must. Corralejo, Spain has long been a favorite vacation resort for Spaniards. Foreign tourists are just discovering its joys. Windsurfing and kite surfing are popular on Flag and Glass Beaches. Diving, fishing, and tours to nearby islands also popular options. Domestically, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii is an up and coming tourist destination. Once the residence of kings, Hulihe’e Palace, is now a museum to turnof-the-century Hawaii. Bar Harbor, Maine’s majestic hotels date back 100 years when it was a favorite vacation spot for high society. Kayaking, Acadia National Park and sandy beaches are the draw. Jackson, Wyoming is a favorite place for outdoorsy types with skiing, snowshoeing and dog-sledding in the winter and fly-fishing, rafting and hot-air balloon rides in warmer weather. Galveston, Texas, the island in the Gulf of Mexico with more than 30 miles of beaches and plenty of cultural and historic institutions is no longer a Texas secret. Finally, many travelers to the Big Apple are eschewing Manhattan in favor of the more affordable, Brooklyn. Local artists and young professionals have taken over the borough. Trendy restaurants, shops and clubs followed. That, combined with killer views of the Manhattan skyline and cultural attractions such Brooklyn’s Botanical Garden, Art Museum and Academy of Music, along with funky retro attractions such as Coney Island have made this the new vacation destination.

THE WEEK
Barry Manilow, Tea Cruise, Casino Night and Golda Meir
____________________ Thursday
1/16
What Happens on the Drive… oThe thrill of winning casino games with none of the anxious loss of extreme amounts of cash, Sidelines Casino Night not only is a fun digression with friends but also a charitable event. With only a $25 donation, participants receive $4000.00 in “fun money” to play a variety of Las Vegas style games, including Roulette, Black Jack, Texas Hold’Em style Poker (both open play and Tournament Style), a free cocktail provided by Sidelines, access to the delicious buffet table and hors d’oeuvres and more. All proceeds benefit Pride South Florida—a 100% volunteer organization consisting of individuals interested in promoting positive images of gays, lesbians, and transgender people throughout South Florida. 7 p.m. Sidelines Sports Bar. 2031 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Come to the Copa oBarry Manilow is both a consummate entertainer and cultural punch line. Best known for his ro-
mantic, middle-of-the-road ballads, Manilow burst onto the music scene in the ‘70s and since has had over 38 Top 40 hits from his 31 albums. He won Grammys, Tonys, Emmys, and was even nominated for an Oscar. Hits include “Copacabana,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” “Mandy,” “Weekend in New England,” and “Looks Like We Made It.” More than anything, Manilow may be best known for his guest appearance on Murphy Brown, crooning to her new baby, and converting her to a fan. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave Sunrise, 33323.
Andrew Dice Clay oAfter wowing critics in a small but crucial part in the Cate Blanchett vehicle Blue Jasmine, Andrew Dice Clay is on a sort of comeback. Known for his misogynistic and offensive material, the Dice Man makes no apologies for his onstage persona. Whether it’s Jan Hooks and Sinead O’Connor boycotting an episode of Saturday Night Live or MTV banning him for life (repealing the ban only two years ago), he seemed to find controversy everywhere he went for some time in the early 1990s. Despite his tumultuous career, Ford Farlaine has become a disciplined, talented, and versatile performer/actor. 8 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314. No Place Like Home oThis little-known musical about a young girl in a fight over her dog’s reckless behavior makes its way to the Broward Center for a night of beautiful music and thought-provoking meditations on how neighbors may better protect their legs from unwanted dog interlopers. A strange second act dream sequence involves socialist munchkins, narcissistic wizards, and a heartless yet well-built tin man (tell me about it…). There’s also some song about some type of world across the rainbow that some say has LGBTQ metaphorical significance, but, for the most part, this is a musical about animal rights. 8 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.
End of the Rainbow oIf The Wizard of Oz isn’t enough of a Judy Garland fix for you, try an entire new play completely about Judy Garland. It’s December 1968 and she’s about to make her triumphant comeback…again. The play tackles with savage humor and ferocious drama the inner conflict that inspired and consumed one of the most beloved gay icons of our time. Over a half dozen of Judy’s signature songs will be performed live on stage amid pill-popping, gay husband marrying, and Liza Minelli creating. 8 p.m. Actors’ Playhouse. 280 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables, 33134.

The Year of the Horse oWell, some members of the community couldn’t be happier this 2014. Why is that? Because it’s the Year of the Horse…and you know what that means. Yeah…ummm…well…there’s certain parts of the horse’s anatomy that… whatever. This January Gay Tea Cruise is inspired by the Year of the Horse and will feature its fair share of horseplay. The cruise itself benefits the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation, Sterling Accounting and the Hopper Community Shuttle. The three-hour sunset cruise merrily sails down the New River from South Riverwalk to the Inter-coastal and back. The Amazing Kitty Meow hosts and DJ Maximus 3000 spins his magic on the Dance Floor and the Johnny’s dancers show off their offerings for this Year of the Horse.

Nobuyuki Tsujil: Heroic Beethoven oNow in its 41st season, The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra presents Heroic Beethoven, featuring the prolific pianist Nobuyuki Tsujil. Hold onto your hats, boys, because this sexy and mysterious pianist is not only smokin’, but he’s also one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation. While not Mozart, Beethoven has his own legion of fans. Here his music is given a new life. Overture to Corlolan, Symphony No.2 in D Major, and Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major will all be featured. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33132.

Taste the Point o The ritzy area of northern Fort Lauderdale indulges in the tenth anniversary of their Taste of Lighthouse Point annual event. Local restaurants serve delicious food, wine, and craft beer samples. This year’s event includes offerings from Bonefish Macs, Café Maxx, Edible Arrangements, El Tamarindo Cafe, Hott Leggz, Gimme A Burger, and, of course, Publix. Special appearances by Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Frank Sinatra (or people dressed like them) make this a cute local event not to be missed. 6 p.m. Lighthouse Point Yacht and Racquet Club. 2701 NE 42nd St, Lighthouse Point, 33064.

Golda Meir oThe longest running one-woman show in Broward history is about a Russian immigrant turned schoolteacher turned epicenter of international politics. Who knew? Four-time Tony Award-nominee Tovah Feldshuh reprises her tour-de-force performance as Golda Meir in this historic and successful play. William Gibson’s deeply funny and frighteningly prescient drama blends history and storytelling into an inspiring piece of theater. And, of course, there’s always that dame Golda to ogle all night. 8 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33132.

FITNESS
Get Rid of Those Love Handles Now! by Tom
Bonanti
o
Six pack abs are sexy! Yet a strong, toned midsection is also important because it helps to anchor your lower back. Exercises like crunches and leg raises are essential to developing killer abs and a healthy lower back, but that’s not all you need. The obliques (although they are so deep that you’ll never see them even on the leanest physique) are also an important part of your core as they girdle the abdomen on both sides of the body. As such these babies require a program of their own. “Love handles” is a term used to describe those problem areas where fat accumulates around the waist and oblique areas. To avoid the unwanted baggage you must watch your nutrition –that’s 80% of the battle. In addition, you must keep these muscles strong and toned with such movements as twists, bends, and lunges. The following exercises employ a broom handle or a smaller weight-free barbell. Perform repetitions slowly. Put 2 or 3 of these exercises into your ab routine and complete 25 to 50 reps on each side and you’ll see and feel the difference. Standing twists are basic. Stand grasping a bar behind your head on the upper traps, with feet shoulder-width apart. Keeping the lower body stationary, proceed to twist to the right, pause, then twist to the left. For variation, try bent-over twists. Stand grasping a bar behind your head on the upper traps, with feet shoulder-width apart. Bend over carefully until your torso is parallel to the floor, then

proceed to twist to the right, pause, then twist to the left. Seated twists help to isolate the obliques a little better than the above. Sit on a bench or better yet, an exercise ball. Grasp a bar behind your head on the upper traps with legs together. Keeping the lower body stationary, proceed to twist to the right, pause, then twist to the left. You can also do these holding a medicine ball in front of you. From the same position, twist your torso as you pass the ball rapidly from one side to the other side. Twisting lunges allow you to put your butt to work as well as your obliques. Stand grasping a bar on the upper back, with feet wide apart. Proceed to bend the left knee and twist down that side. Pause, then rise to starting position and perform the next repetition to the right. Twisting waves get your upper body more involved. Stand grasping a bar out in front of you with feet wide apart. Proceed to bend the right knee and simultaneously lower the left hand across your body while raising the right hand. Pause, then rise to starting position and perform the next rep to the left. Watch your nutrition and perform these oblique routines regularly, and you’ll build a healthy core and gorgeous midsection! For more tips on core fitness contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.
