The 56th Annual Grammy Awards: Who Will Take Home the Most?

by

Grant James

o

Each year the Grammys bring a sense of purpose to all of our lives. We’ll likely drag ourselves to a friend’s place where we can sit back, relax, and enjoy as some of our favorite artists receive proper recognition. Of course, there’s a good chance you and your friends will be divided: You know, it’’s a very competitive night. “Katy Perry is cool but Sara Bareilles released her song first,” your friend will obnoxiously say. Yes, the Grammys can get pretty heated at times. After all, it was only a few years ago that Kanye West broke the hearts of millions of pre-pubescent girls around the world when he snatched that microphone from Taylor Swift. He was going to let her finish, but first he had to get up there and let everyone know that he thought Beyonce should have won. What would an awards show be without a little drama? “Boring,” said Jacqueline Bisset. The 2014 Grammy nominees are just as diverse as last year’s. Looking at the nominees for Record of the Year (Daft Punk, Imagine Dragons, Lorde, Bruno Mars and Robin Thicke), it could be anyone’s game. Lorde is this year’s out-of-left-fieldlast-minute-entry that has everybody talking, while Bruno Mars brings equal parts hype and talent. It’s really anybody’s game but we’re thinking this might be the year of Lorde. Sara Bareilles, Daft Punk, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift will all battle it out for Album of the Year, and we have our money on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Delivering a social and political message along with a smash hit is a rarity nowadays, and the Seattle-based duo has managed to do both with flying colors. Daft Punk could be another contender for the award. Song of the Year is going to be a tough one. Katy Perry (“Roar”) and Pink (“Just Give Me a Reason”) represent the mainstream pop demo here, while Lorde is entering the arena with a more indie fan base (“Royals”). Bruno Mars (“Locked Out of Heaven”) and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (“Same Love”) are both nominated, but we’re thinking this one is between the ladies. Things start to get really interesting with the

26

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

Best New Artist category. R&B singer James Blake is a top contender for this award, as well as rappers Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. We’re not sure how Kacey Musgraves made it into the category, but we’re assuming it’s because someone said “lol, what about the country music?” Ed Sheeran is also nominated, but unless the voting committee is made up of teen girls, we doubt he has much of a chance. The subcategories (best pop, rock, dance/electronica, alternative, R&B, rap, country, etc.) are really anybody’s game, because who can choose between Ziggy Marley and Snoop Lion? We’re pretty sure Calvin Harris will win for Best Dance/ Electronica, but it’s hard to say for sure. (Need we remind you of Skrillex’s previous wins?) We will give one prediction though – Kathy Griffin will win Best Comedy Album hands-down. Why? Because she’s up against Ron White, Tig Notaro and Bob Saget for God’s sake. Her only real competition? Craig Ferguson, because Scottish accents are everything. Of course, the performances act as an additional layer of excitement as well. Katy Perry, Daft Punk, Imagine Dragons, Pink, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lorde, Metallica (yes, Metallica), Robin Thicke, Sara Bareilles, Taylor Swift and more are all scheduled to perform at the show. Whether you’re watching with friends, or at home in bed with the cats, the Grammy Awards give everyone a night to remember and plenty to talk about during the weeks that follow. The 56th Annual Grammy Awards will air on CBS on January 26th, at 8 p.m. guymagtube

THE WEEK

Cleopatra, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Macbeth ____________________ ____________________ Thursday

1/23 Saturday

Love and Hope oThe Rosenbaum Contemporary Museum of Art features a tribute to the American painter and sometime postage stamp creator Robert Indiana. Indiana’s best-known work is the love sculpture in which love is arranged in a square with a tilted letter O. The work became so popular in the 1970s that it was even crafted into a postage stamp. Two years ago, Google used the Love image in place of their normal search engine site logo for Valentine’s Day. His recent collection, “Hope”, is inspired by this seminal work. 10 a.m. Rosenbaum Contemporary. 150 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, 33431.

1/24

The Boogie Man oThere are so many different ways to like it: fried, creamy, sautéed, julienned, boiled, sunny-side up, al dente, and poached. KC and the Sunshine Band, understands themselves, more than most of us. We all struggle with what we need or what we really like. They, in contrast, know confidently exactly what they like, and they’re not afraid to tell whoever they’re with, as is evidenced by their wildly popular now wedding staple “That’s the Way (I Like it)”. Tonight they don’t just stop with the ways they like it, they also explore the Jekyll and Hyde like nature of KC (“I’m Your Boogie Man”), the pain of rejection (“Please Don’t Go”), and the most important command ever uttered at a party (“Get Down Tonight”). 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

Antony and Cleopatra oIf KC and the Sunshine Band don’t quite do it for you, chances are you’re damaged goods, but it’s also possible you have a more sophisticated palate and this GableStage production of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra might be more your cup of tea. The historical tragedy moves from the Middle East to the Caribbean as the insatiable, toxic lovers cause each other’s demise in Haiti on the eve of its 18th century revolution against France. 8 p.m. The Gables Stage. 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, 33139.

1/25

Wilton Scavenger Hunt oEver want to just beat everyone? Like, really, use all of your mental and physical prowess at once in order to beat everyone? Well, this morning Wilton Manors hosts a scavenger hunt in which you will be able, in teams of three, to win prizes by figuring out clues for certain Wilton Manors historical spots. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with a recommendation of teams of three to four. One member must have a camera phone to take photos as “proof” of your team at these spots. It is also recommended for teams to “brush up” on their history by reading Wilton Manors: From Farming Community to Urban Village. All proceeds benefit the Wilton Manors Historical Society. 9 a.m. Richardson Park. 1937 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Grand Funk Railroad oHomer Simpson’s favorite band makes their way to Miami, hoping to revive the lost spirit of the 1970s. Although never quite critical darlings, Grand Funk Railroad dominated the blues rock scene with such successful songs as “We’re an American Band,” “Locomotion,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and “Feelin’ Alright”. Tonight the memories of those wistful days will permeate most of these songs. And if you really need to get in the mood, check out the 1980’s Lea Thompson and Eric Stoltz vehicle Some Kind of Wonderful. 9 p.m. Casino Miami Jai-Alai. 3500 NW 37th Ave, Miami, 33142.

Macbeth oWitches, an ambitious man, murder, and a manipulative wife: sounds like a Thanksgiving at home. Verdi’s operatic interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy hits both the dramatic and supernatural high notes. The Scotland-set, Palm Beach Opera production will feature all of the favorite Macbeth moments: the bloodyhanded, guilt-ridden queen, the double double toil and trouble, even the guy in the play who isn’t Macbeth but has a similar name (Macduff). 2 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401. Just Gender oThe transgender community has one of the toughest fights. Recent statistics show suicide rates for the transgender community are significantly higher than for the rest of the population. Thankfully, SunServe has created a new Transgender Services Department. To kick off this new endeavor, SunServe is hosting the film “Just Gender” at the Gateway cinema. Regular fundraising tickets cost $25, and if you decide to join the hosting committee, the price goes to $200. A panel discussion at 8:30 pm will feature local transgender experts including the new Director of Transgender Services, Arianna Lint. 7 p.m. Gateway Cinema. 1820 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

A $23 donation in benefit of Latinos Salud Juntos and Latinos Salud-Somos will be matched by Our Fund, so come out to party for a great cause and support local talent. Food, drinks, a live DJ, and some “surprises” will make this a spectacular anniversary party. 5:30 p.m. Michael Murphy Photographic Studio and Gallery Inc. 261 NE 32 Ct, Fort Lauderdale, 33334.

Jackie Mason oJackie Mason has been one of the premiere Jewish comedians, spanning over a half century worth of Borscht Belt humor. Considering himself an “equal opportunity offender,” he pokes fun and points fingers at political and social issues. He once poked his middle finger straight up back in 1964 during a stint on The Ed Sullivan Show at Mr. Sullivan. At the time this caused outrage (though, how much have things really changed? Miley Cyrus got in trouble for her big finger just last year). Mason is also quite the humanitarian, forming the One Jerusalem organization in order to try and help Jerusalem stay united as the undivided capital of Israel. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Mardi Gras or Carnival: No Matter the Name, the Party’s the Same by

Rick Karlin

o

In the trio of the gayest holidays, Mardi Gras comes in a close third behind Pride and Halloween. If it wasn’t for the fact that straight people celebrate it (it seems to be the source of most “Girls Gone Wild” videos), it might come in even higher. Sometimes with all the craziness, it’s easy to forget the origins of Mardi Gras (and its sister celebration Carnival): a big celebration with the purpose of getting all the craziness out of people’s systems so they’ll be ready for the solemnity of Lent. In the U.S., New Orleans may be more identified with Mardi Gras, but Mobile, Alabama claims to have had the first parade in America. Mobile now has a Mardi Gras similar to New Orleans’, complete with beads and balls. For weeks, the streets of downtown Mobile are filled with the sights and sounds of live marching bands, brilliant-colored floats and of course, crowds of parade-goers. Mobile even has a Carnival Museum. For more information check out, cityofmobile.org/mardigras. Galveston, Texas also welcomes more than 500,000 people for elaborate Mardi Gras parades, entertainment, feasting and other festivities. Check out galveston.com or call (888) 939-8680. First or not, N’awlins is still the capital of Mardi Gras festivities in North America. The celebrations draw millions of visitors, and LGBT visitors are no exception. New Orleans Gay Mardi Gras is without a doubt the most outrageous gay and lesbian event in New Orleans, second only to “Southern Decadence” in the number of gay and lesbian revelers. In 2014, the celebrations take place Thursday, February 27 through Tuesday, March 4 in the lower French Quarter. This is where the epicenter of the LGBT New Orleans community is located (at the corner of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets,) anchored by the city’s largest gay nightclub, The Bourbon Pub. New Orleans’ Gay Mardi Gras presents the nation’s best DJ talent. For more information and links to travel packages, check out gaymardigras.net. Back on this side of the world, Rio de Janeiro is the mother of all Carnival celebrations. The parades in Rio are known as bandas, with more than 10,000 participants per parade. There are several gay festivals that seem to include a little something for everyone. The entire city embraces the gay events. So much so, that people in Brazil joke that everyone seems a little gay during carnival. In addition to gay pool parties and large dance events, you can also join street festivals and parades all over the city. Most agencies catering to LGBT travelers have packages for Rio’s Carnival. Zoom Vacations (zoomvacations.com) has packages

46

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

starting at $6,500. Atlantis Cruises, priced from $2,800 to $6,000, sail from Buenos Aires with the ultimate port being Rio, just in time for the parties. For more information, go to atlantisevents.com. Lesser known, but no less enjoyable, Mexico’s Carnival celebrations are some of the most exuberant you’ll find. Mazatlan, the beach resort town on Mexico’s northern Pacific coast, hosts one of the world’s largest Mardi Gras celebrations, attracting hundreds of thousands of revelers. The festivities actually start on Thursday with the Muestra Gastronómica, an all-day food festival on Plaza Machado. The parade is held on the Malecon, between the Fisherman’s Monument and Valentino’s, with a fireworks celebration staged all along Avenida del Mar. Admission to the areas where the bands are playing is restricted, but tickets that allow you to roam the entire space and see all the bands and other performers are just 30 pesos and do not need to be purchased in advance. For more information, go to mazatlantoday.net. Perhaps the most elaborate Carnival celebration is held in Venice, Italy. Many events are held in and along the canals, including shows, concerts, dances, and water processions with masked rowers and decorated boats. The official ending to the celebration is the ball held in St. Mark’s Square. The celebration begins with a pre-Carnival party, “Prologue,” on Valentine’s Day and opens with a show, “Cannaregio”, on the next day. What follows are days filled with boat pageants, float parades and a new event this year. A ball will be held in a 600 year old palace on the Grand Canal. Those attending arrive at the water entrance on the sea level floor, greeted by dancers who will guide them to a cocktail reception and performances by internationally acclaimed illusionists, acrobats and entertainers, before being seated on the upper level for a grand dinner and dancing. Germany gives its own spin to the holiday with Fasching. The largest parade, called Rosenmontag, is in Cologne, where locals, immigrants and tourists celebrate with numerous fancy-dress gatherings and masked balls. Each day is devoted to one group. For example Women’s Carnival Day finds the streets teeming with women in fancy dress on their way to work or to shops. In the evenings masked balls and parties predominate. The climax of the German Carnival is a large parade. Being Germany, everything starts right on time, and ends abruptly. Following the celebration, on Ash Wednesday, fish dinners are traditionally served as a cure for hangovers. For more information on Carnival in Cologne, go to koelnerkarneval.de. guymagtube

FITNESS

Log On To Your Most Successful Training Year Ever by Tom

Bonanti

o

Ever feel like you’re spinning your wheels at the gym? Frustrated because you’re not quite sure how far you’ve come or where you’re headed? You can optimize your workouts and actually chart your progress by keeping a fitness log. A training log is essential for any serious fitness enthusiast. Keep a written record of your workouts as you add sets and build reps, lift more iron and add strength-building routines. Add photos occasionally to your written notes. Flipping back through the pages will boost your self-esteem as you see how far you’ve come! Remember as you keep your training log that hard workouts should be followed by easier ones, hard weeks should be followed by easier weeks. You need to change your routines and workouts substantially every 3-4 months, as your body changes, as your goals are adjusted – these are called mesocycles. Make sure to chart your cardio and keep track of your weight, body fat percentage and any important events or injuries you may be struggling with during your training. Does training sometimes turn you cranky? Moods are closely associated with how you perform at work, in the bedroom, and in the gym. Overtraining, technically referred to as cumulative microtrauma is often accompanied by feelings of depression, apathy, lethargy and frustration. When you feel this way, it is often your body telling you to back off. Take some time away from the gym, but stay active. Go for walks, swim at the beach, but give your body a rest from heavy training.

48

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

Reassess your progress, read through your training log, consult a personal trainer or find a workout buddy to motivate you. When you return to the gym you’ll have a new attitude, a fresh set of goals and the vim and vigor you need to build and sculpt that body. A written record of your food intake can be very telling. A food record is a must if you want to build some serious mass, or take off fat. Track your fat intake to make sure you follow the target of less than one gram of fat per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of bodyweight. Write down everything you put into your mouth and when you eat it; don’t rely on memory. Try to eat all of your low glycemic index carbs earlier in the day to fuel your workouts and hectic schedule. Read labels and remember that there are: 9 calories in every gram of fat, 4 calories in very gram of carbohydrates and proteins 7 big fat wasted calories in every gram of alcohol. Many people tend to bounce around from highs to lows, and don’t cope well with lows. Writing your feelings down is the next best thing to talking about them. Your workouts are an incredible investment in your health, appearance, and self-esteem. Your training log can be a new key to success in your fitness endeavors.
