On the Road to The Hookies An Exclusive Interview with Angel Rock

by

Grant James

o

Before we can get to The Hookies 2014 International Escort Awards, we have to go through some preliminary contests. Therefore, Boardwalk will be hosting a regional contest for the highly-coveted “Mr. Florida” title via Rentboy. Mr. Florida will then go on to compete in New York at the 2014 Hookies (which is sort of like the Academy Awards for escorts, in case you didn’t know). That’s right, escorts deserve recognition too. One escort in particular caught our eye this year – Miami’s own Angel Rock. Angel is a total stallion (in every sense of the word), so he’s definitely a top contender for Mr. Florida. We recently spoke to Angel to hear his thoughts on his competition and what the future holds for the versatile model/ escort. I can’t decide what sounds more fun; doing adult films or escorting. Which do you prefer? Film is much more artistically adventurous, and as an artist, this excites me! How did you start doing porn? At the tender age of 18 I was approached to do porn. I started as a web cam performer and soon after transitioned into film where I was signed to an exclusive contract. Start ‘em young. What’s it like being a part of rentboy? Was the transition from porn to escort an easy one? It’s a matter of fulling fantasies and pushing limits that you wouldn’t normally pursue. It wasn’t hard, just different. What has been your craziest experience as an escort so far? Favorite experience? Both craziest and favorite is staying up all night getting to know a stranger, and leaving that experience genuinely happy to have met that individual. That’s very compassionate of you. You’re competing for the Mr. Florida title to get a chance at becoming the next Mr. International Escort. I’m wondering... What do they even make you do for those contests? I’m excited to hang out with my peers that night not to concerned with the outcome. When us Florida boys get together it’s a hoot! And above all, THE FANS! I love any opportunity to interact and see my fans. I have no clue what they will make us do. Maybe eat bananas? [laughs]

28

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

What’s your competition like for Mr. Florida? Have you sized them up yet? They are all awesome performers and young gentlemen. I am just honored to be included...But it’s a contest. May the best man win. I have to ask...What does one wear to The Hookies? It can’t be a black tie affair can it? It’s held in NYC, the fashion capital of the universe. BRING IT!! What’s in the future for Angel Rock? Both the entertainer and the person. I plan to further my education in motion picture/ television production... Stay tuned! Make sure to check out all of the action in person at Boardwalk (1721 N Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33311) on February 1 at 11 p.m.

THE WEEK

Jerry Seinfeld, A Surreal Workshop and Willie Nelson ____________________ ____________________ Thursday

1/30 Saturday

Mardy Bum’s in Town oHipsters will descend in droves and droves onto The Filmore Miami Beach for this colossal concert. Break out your black-rimmed glasses, thrift store attire, and sarcastic delivery, because Arctic Monkeys, one of the more critically acclaimed British indierock bands of the last decade, will be performing in Miami Beach. Arctic Monkeys first captured the public’s attention in 2006 with their acclaimed debut smash album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.” Since then, other successful albums such as “Favourite Worst Nightmare” and “Humbug” have kept their popularity afloat. 8:30 p.m. The Filmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

____________________ Friday

1/31

Just Nothing oOne of the most famous and notable comedians of this generation spends a night doling out his classic observational humor. The king of the “You ever notice how…” line, Seinfeld’s stand-up routine became fertile ground for the successful ‘90s sitcom Seinfeld. That show not only catapulted Julie LouisDreyfus and racist Michael Richards to fame, but it also started a trend of NYC singles-life sitcoms. Since that time, Jerry Seinfeld has remained an active stand-up comedian and reached the pinnacle of his career by voicing a bee in the animated Bee Movie. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood, 33314.

Willie Nelson oWhen not guest-starring in episodes of Monk, Willie Nelson has found time to create country music. In fact, Willie Nelson is one of the most commercially and critically successful country musicians of the 1960s. But Mr. Nelson is more than just a musician and OCD detective friend, he is also an author, poet, and activist. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music rebelling against the conservative nature of the genre. Nelson has also prominently promoted the legalization of marijuana. Tonight, Nelson whips out his guitar and sings about his status “On the Road Again.” If he whips out an e-cigarette, well… it might not be a cigarette. 8 p.m. Coral Springs Center for the Arts. 2855 Coral Springs Dr, Coral Springs, 33065. guymag.net

2/1

Surrealist Workshop Will Open Minds oReading Queer seeks to establish Miami as a center for queer literature, providing the community with a platform for self-exploration and selfexpression through creative writing. This afternoon, they do just that, with a surrealist workshop led by poet and memoirist Maureen Seaton, RQ Executive Director Neil de la Flor, and the Reading Queer team. The workshop takes the participants through a dynamic creative process inspired by visual art. A suggested donation of $10 allows any artists entry into this innovative and badly needed cultural event. 2 p.m. The Bakehouse Art Complex. 561 NW 32nd St, Miami, 33127.

Shen Yun Performing Arts oEver since the kiosk opened up at the Galleria Mall last October, with a little TV highlighting a bunch of twisting Chinese people with twirling fabric, all of Fort Lauderdale’s been waiting with bated breath for the Shen Yun Performing Arts to finally arrive at the Broward Center. The NYC-based dance company will try to express the essence of 500 years of Chinese culture, which it asserts has all but been demolished by the Chinese Communist government. If it’s anything like that one Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies, expect lots of synchronicity. 8 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

____________________ Sunday

2/2

Anti-Semitism, Center Stage oNot quite a pride parade, instead “Parade” focuses on the true story of the trial and lynching of a man wrongly accused of murder. Written by acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy), the musical was considered one of the more daring, innovative, and bold productions of the 2000 season. Composer Jason Robert Brown won a Tony for Best Score of that year. The 1913 trial of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank and the anti-Semitic tensions that arise serve as the basis for this inflammatory production. 2 p.m. West Boca Performing Arts Theater. 12811 W. Glades Rd, Boca Raton, 33428. THE WEEK continues on page 38 theguymag

THE WEEK ____________________ Monday

2/3

Wear Your Bell-Bottoms oThe sweet, soulful sounds of the 1970s iconic American rock band known as Ambrosia will infuse Jazziz Nightlife. Ambrosia had numerous Billboard hits between the years of 1975 and 1980, including the seductive “How Much I Feel” and the heartfelt “Biggest Part of Me”. When not touring the country, Ambrosia has been featured on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Some of the members have even released solo albums, but Ambrosia will always be best together, sensitively singing their love songs. 7 p.m. Jazziz Nightlife. 201 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 33432.

____________________ Tuesday

2/4

If You’re Into Metal o The metal-core band known as Bring Me the Horizon features the unpredictable, emo, and heavily tattooed lead singer Oliver Sykes. With Justin Beiber’s recent stint behind bars, tween girls and gay boys everywhere can pledge allegiance to this vegan, who went to the same school as also-featuring-this-week Arctic

Monkeys. Bring Me the Horizon has recently been influenced by musical styles way beyond just metal-core. Their 2013 album “Sempiternal” features electronica and post-rock sounds. Come throw your panties on stage tonight starting at 6 pm. Of Mice and Men opens. 6 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

____________________ Wednesday Chicago’s Last Hope oFresh off the heels of a disastrous season of Homeland, Mandy Patinkin, the original Che Guevara in Evita, sings an eclectic mix of Broadway show tunes, American songbook standards, and Yiddish language classics. A Broadway legend and acclaimed-TV star, Patinkin’s most famous film role may be as Inigo Montoya in “The Princess Bride” or, alongside Madame Babs, in the who-could-ever-forget “Yentl.” Known for his tenor voice and work in Soundheim productions, Patinkin has maintained a reputable career across all performance art platforms. Paul Ford accompanies on the piano. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Maximus 3000

Blowing Up in 2014 By Jeff Stewart We recently sat down with award-winning, Billboard chart-topping DJ, producer, philanthropist and social media guru Maximus 3000 to get the inside scoop on what he’s been up to and what he has planned for 2014. What made you decide to get into entertainment as a DJ and record producer?

I’ve always been in the arts. I have a background in visual art. When I was in college for an art degree (I actually attended college early, at just 15 years old), I began experimenting with music and visuals. It was a natural progression to fuse my background in art with my knowledge of music. Making people happy has always been a little joy for me, and DJing seemed to be an outlet. So one thing lead to another, and soon after some research, purchasing of some gear, lots of practice, some music theory studying and countless gigs perfecting my craft, I formed a fully-fledged mobile DJ company.

Hair, Makeup and styling by Ricco Roland, photos by Ricco Roland and Victor Steven

How long have you been involved in being a DJ and a public figure in South Florida? Any special causes that you support?

In 1995, I opened my Mobile Entertainment company, which I focused on until about 2001. Soon after, I landed some club gigs and festivals, and by 2003 was heavily focused on club DJing. Each year continues to outdo the next till this day. I’m proud to say that I’ve landed some coveted slots in almost every major festival here in South Florida, both LGBT oriented and other. These achievements have skyrocketed my public profile and presence allowing me to ‘pay it forward’ with endorsement and support of some of the causes and organizations that matter to me, including Food for the Poor, INC, GLAAD, Humane Society, Women/Kids in distress, Care Resource, Task Force, Poverello Food Bank, AHF, NVEEE and more. The most important and closest to home for me, is equal rights.

and being able to reverse engineer the process and offer it to folks is very exciting. I want to break the mold on what people expect from a private DJ performance. So, I’m rebooting my old mobile entertainment company and giving it a makeover to include the “Maximus 3000” experience. We are aware that you were the main DJ that helped grow and build the Living Room nightclub in Fort Lauderdale a while back. Whatever happened to that?

‘The Living Room Era,’ as I like to call it, was one of the most epic residencies I had. It was a career changer. I met thousands of really cool people and built a family relationship with many of my coworkers, especially Mark Lowe, its creator. I launched a lot of new ideas, and perfected an open format skillset that has opened countless doors for me. I can attribute a lot of my chops to having maintained an almost 4 year weekly residency every Friday, and for a time even the Saturday night slot. It was a large part of my career to date, and I’m happy to have left it crystalized in its prime, but the proverbial door to a LIVING ROOM leads its way to a HOUSE, and that’s all I can say about that...Wink wink.

Is it also true that you’re available for private events and parties for people who would like to bring your special technique and entertainment to their private venue or home for a wedding or special occasion?

Where do you see yourself in the next three years? I have a very concise battle plan, a lot of seeds that have been planted over the years are in full bloom and I’m seeing a completed picture of my vision. I have many areas of art yet to explore. I’m currently looking into an acting debut, music supervision on some film projects, as well as a national DJ tour, a network of online radio stations, a newly reinvigorated record label and publishing company, and expanded offices in Tampa, NYC and LA.

I am, and always will be. The difference is that I started as a mobile DJ and grew into a Club/Festival DJ. Taking years of experience and knowledge producing, promoting, facilitating and playing MAJOR events

TRAVEL

On the Road Again by

Rick Karlin

o

Sometimes at the end of the week, you just want to get in the car and take off, hopefully with a better ending than “Thelma and Louise.” The National Scenic Byways Program is a grass-roots effort to help recognize, selected roads throughout the U.S. with archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities. Florida is home to a large number of these routes, so put the top down, crank up the music and take in the sights. The Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, a few hours up the coast from Ft. Lauderdale, just past Daytona Beach, includes four state and six local public parks, as well as ten miles of gorgeous Florida beachfront. Take advantage of the unique opportunity to visit three “Old Florida” environments while driving, biking, or hiking along a connected figureeight shaped corridor. The loop also provides an opportunity to visit museums, historic public buildings, and private homes along the corridor, in Tomoka State Park, and in locations a few blocks off the designated roadways. When driving along the ocean, keep your eyes peeled and you may be able to spot northern right and humpback whales or dolphins. For more information, check out ormondscenicloopandtrail.com. Heading southwest to the Keys can be maddening if you view it as merely the route to Key West. Instead, enjoy the trip itself, from Ft. Lauderdale, through Key Largo, following the Old Keys Railroad Bridges of US 1 to Key West. Rail service to Key West ended when the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed over 40 miles of track. The state purchased the right-of-way in 1936 and began constructing the Overseas Highway. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, during the three and half hours drive water stretches out as far as the eye can see. The “Road to Paradise” is lined with mile markers every mile, and residents of the Keys refer to them when giving directions, identifying locations as just before or just beyond a mile marker number. For more information on this route, check out southeastroads.com. Take Hwy. 905 south of Miami down to Dagny Johnson Hammock Botanical State Park for a local treasure trove of splendor. Once slated to become a condominium development, this park contains one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwoods in the United States. Exploring the

park´s trails will give you a chance to see some of these rare species of plants and animals The park is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe and the American crocodile. More than six miles of nature trails provide a wealth of opportunities for birdwatchers and photographers. Most of the park´s trails are paved and accessible to both bicycles and wheelchairs. Signs along a self-guided nature trail provide information about the park´s ecosystem and wildlife. Ranger-guided tours are also available. Call (305) 451-1202 or go to floridastateparks.org for more information. A bit longer drive, but worth the effort for the kitsch value alone, is Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, located about an hour north of Tampa at the crossroads of U.S. 19 and State Road 50. The park offers a river cruise and animal demonstrations with tropical birds and native reptiles, but the main draw is the show featuring live “mermaids” which has been a draw since 1946. An underwater window gives a wide view of the beautiful mermaids who swim in the clear spring waters. The Seminole Indians named the spring “Weeki Wachee,” which means “little spring” or “winding river.” The spring is so deep that the bottom has never been found. Each day, more than 117 million gallons of clear, fresh 74-degree water bubbles up out of subterranean caverns. Sitting in the Mermaid Theater, you’ll be transported back to the time before theme parks and super highways appeared. Admission is reasonably priced ($13 for adults). For more information, go to weekiwachee.com. For more information on scenic drives throughout Florida, go to fhwa.dot.gov/byways guymagtube

Bench Press Your Way To A Perfect Chest by Tom

Bonanti

o

There are certain exercises that are so basic and important to working out that just about everyone’s routine should include them. The leg squat, standing deadlift, and flat bench press are certainly among the most crucial to developing a strong, healthy physique. This week, let’s take a look at the barbell bench press. The bench press is one of the best upper body strength builders there is. It is a multi-joint movement that not only works chest, but triceps, shoulders and abdominals as well. Besides the biceps curl, it’s probably the first move you learned when you first went to the gym. The chest press, both flat and incline is your major mass building weight lifting exercise. Everybody claims to know how to do a bench press. As a trainer, working out in various gyms, I see some scary stuff going on with bench pressing. You risk passing out, or even a hernia when you hold your breath during the concentric and eccentric phases of the movement. Dropping the elbows past 90 degrees when you lower the weight toward your chest can cause rotator cuff damage. Bouncing the bar off your sternum can cause a major disaster. Over arching your lower back as you push the weight up can cause a herniated disc. Here are some rules to follow when benching. Remember, having a spotter gives you extra security especially on heavy lifting days. As you lie down to bench make sure your hips are flat on the

bench with your feet planted flat on the floor, your knees should be 11 inches to 2 feet apart. To help yourself concentrate, keep your eyes fixed on the center of the bar. Avoid turning your head from side to side or pressing it into the bench as you push the weight upward. When grasping the bar, make sure your hands are slightly more than shoulder-width apart in an overhand grip. The bar should rest comfortably across your palms. At the top of the movement, straighten your arms, but don’t lock your elbows. This keeps constant tension on the chest muscles. As you disengage the bar from the rack, keep your elbows out as far as possible from your sides. Lower the bar until it barely touches your chest above the nipples. Remember to let your chest muscles, not gravity, lower the bar to your chest. Don’t bounce the bar off your sternum. An arch in the back is natural, but don’t overdo it. There should be just enough space to slide a hand between your lower back and the bench. Overarching places your body at an angle which places too much strain on the vertebrae of the lumbar area of the back. So let’s take it to the weight room and try out your bench press. For more tips on developing an awesome chest, contact Tom Bonanti at trainertomb@aol.com. Check out my one on one gym, Pump’n Inc. at www.pumpnincgym.com
