COVER

Get Into the Cellblock By Jason Vasquez

o

CellBlock 13 is merging fashion with fetish, whisking men beyond the bedroom and into the adult playroom. Made from spandex mesh and nylon fabrics in sinisterly dark shades of navy, black and red, the collection consists of a full range of underwear, jockstraps, graphic tees, compression shorts, socks and wrestling singlets. It is for the guy who isn’t ashamed to show off how he looks and feels, or the kink he’s into. We had a chance to speak with designer Timoteo Ocampo about his dark, sexy line. What makes Cellblock 13 stand out from other fetish gear? The design is top tier. The Renegade Lace Up jock got our attention... It draws inspiration from football and soccer team jerseys. Guys seem to like it. We’ve been seeing CellBlock 13 popping up on Grindr, Scruff, and Jack’d. Are the socks an accessory to the underwear? They were designed as an accessory but I know of a gay soft softball team that is wearing them as

30

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

part of their uniform. Whose idea was it to include masks in the collection? That was my idea. Some guys want a complete outfit they can wear as gear. We use materials that aren’t leather or neoprene and we mark the masks at reasonable price point so guys can have one in each color. Do fetish brands get the respect they deserve? They do now. CellBlock 13 started strong and is growing at a faster pace than we ever imagined it would. The complete Renegade collection was a game changer this year at IML. Where do you see the brand going from here? We are exploring licensing options but that is a year or two away, if at all. We won’t give the use of our name to anyone where we cannot control the design. Plus it has to be something we would want to wear or use before we would ever consider it. THE WEEK

Jay Leno, a MGLFF Screening and Garlic Fest ____________________ Thursday

2/6

Loggin’ In oPooh Bear and his friends, while a microcosm for any community, are rife with a host of psychological disorders. Whether it’s Pooh’s over-eating, Piglet’s anxiety, Eeyore’s major depressive disorder, or Owl’s narcissism, the hundred acres woods clan need a lot of healing before they can reach any form of selfactualizing. Despite the underlying darkness hidden in the Pooh mythology, Kenny Loggins still managed to create a masterful children’s album and reworking of the title song “House at Pooh Corner” for his newborn son Luke back in 1990. Ignoring the realities of these dysfunctional characters’ lives, Loggins crafted a successful and melancholic song (although a lie) about the gang. Expect the song to possibly be on the set, tonight, at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts as Kenny Loggins takes the stage. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

A Late Night with Jay Leno oJust fired Jay Leno will have a lot of time on his hands. Given that he was unceremoniously booted from the crown jewel of comedian gigs: hosting The Tonight Show. The long jawed, sarcastic Leno has been labeled one of the good guys by his peers—hardworking, witty, sensitive and generous. Despite numerous controversial Late Night moments, including rifts with Letterman and, later, Conan, Leno maintained high ratings until recently. His regularly performs stand-up in Las Vegas, comedy clubs, and on college campuses. He is a car fanatic who writes a column for Popular Mechanic as well. So diverse. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Vampires Beware: Garlic Fest 2014 oAs all the vampires flee Delray Beach for one weekend, garlic pushes its way for the 15th anniversary of this annual festival. Despite being a date ruin-er, garlic is mostly known as a flavorful addition to any dish. For this three-day event, garlic will be praised for the worthy work it has done to America’s palate for many, many years. Features of the event include Garlic Chef Competition, large children’s area, heavenly garlic goodies at the Gourmet Alley, full-liquor bars, wine garden and over 180 exhibitors. Garlic Fest is staffed by 500+ volunteers from 11 non-profit agencies raising funds for their organization. 5 p.m. Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square. 51 N. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, 33444.

‘Stranger by the Lake’ Screening oThe critically acclaimed and controversial new French thriller Stranger by the Lake premieres at the Miami Beach Cinematheque as part of Glow Miami—a monthly screening series presented by the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Detailing the violent outcome from the events at a cruising area in rural France, Stranger by the Lake has drawn rave reviews for its explicit sexuality and mysterious, guymag.net

THE WEEK Lazy Days at Flagler Garden oDoes getting out of bed feel like the most difficult accomplishment? Have you recently been able to finish an entire gallon of Breyer’s ice cream in one sitting? Is the last job you’ve been able to hold one in a school setting? If so, then Flagler Garden’s new event Lazy Days is just the right activity for you on a Saturday morning. If you’re capable of getting out of bed, then you can make your way over to Flagler Garden where you can just, well, do nothing. Maybe bring a blanket, or some food, or some games. Or just sit back, relax, fall asleep again, and wait for life to pass you by. A Broadway legend and acclaimed-TV star, Patinkin’s most

famous film role may be as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride or, alongside Madame Babs, in the who-could-ever-forget Yentl. Known for his tenor voice and work in Soundheim productions, Patinkin has maintained a reputable career across all performance art platforms. Killer Singers

42

oSondheim’s strange musical about presidential assassins arrives in Miami for a month-long run. Having won 5 Tonys back in 2004, “Assassins” is a revue-style musical that focuses on the nine different assassins who attempted (or succeeded) at murdering different Presidents of the United States. From Lee Harvey Oswald to John Wilkes Booth to John Hinckley and his Jodie Foster obsession (bad news, John, things have changed for Jodie—she’s off the table for a gentleman like you), they’re all singing and dancing up a storm in this surreal and controversial musical. 7:30 p.m. Adrienne Arscht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132. guymag.net

TRAVEL

San Francisco:

More Than Just The Castro by

Rick Karlin

o

San Francisco, the city that practically invented gay, is one of the most popular destinations for LGBT travelers thanks to its friendly and welcoming culture of acceptance, as well as its wealth of art and culture and its thriving nightlife scene. It is home to more gay people per capita (16%) than any other American city. In March the city has a comfortable median temperature in the 70s, making it the perfect time to visit, round-trip airfares are less than $300 and, if that wasn’t enough to tempt you to travel to Bagdad by the Bay, here are a number of special events slated to seal the deal. Leather Alliance Weekend, Feb. 28 - March 2, is second only to the Folsom Street Festival in drawing leather daddies from across the globe. South of Market comes alive with the SOMA bars rolling out the leather carpet for this event-filled weekend. On Friday, Feb. 28 witness a roast of local Mr. San Francisco Leather (and 2013 International Mr. Leather), Andy Cross. Leather seminars fill Saturday afternoon and later that night it’s the Mr. San Francisco Leather contest. (For more information, go to www.leatheralliance.org.) Sure, L.A. is home to the Academy Awards, but S.F. is no slouch when it comes to celebrating the night. “Return to the Emerald City: Academy of Friends 34th annual Oscar Gala” on Sunday, March 2 benefits six Bay Area HIV/AIDS service agencies. Walk the red carpet, watch the awards show on multiple screens, sample food provided by the Bay Area’s finest restaurants and caterers and wine and champagne from amazing vintners, bid on silent auction must-haves, dance the night away and ogle your fellow guests in their best finery at this elegant soiree. (For additional information, visit www.academyoffriends.org.) Climb aboard “The Big Gay Train to Napa Valley Wine Country” on Saturday, March 15. Hosted by Out in the Vineyards, the event includes a pre-trip sparkling wine reception, a scenic and luxurious train ride, conversation with Napa Valley LGBT winemakers and a four-course dinner. (For additional information, visit www.outinthevineyard. com.) “Luster: An American Songbook” features out cabaret singer-songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway (she wrote the theme to “The Nanny” and Barbra’s wedding song) as the guest star of the San Fran-

48

theguymag

cisco Gay Men’s Chorus. The concert will feature the classic songs of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and Irving Berlin on Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday. March 26. (For tickets and additional information, check out www.sfgmc.org.) The Castro Theatre hosts “Drag Queens of Comedy” on Saturday, March 29. Coco Peru, Sasha Soprano, Shangela, Peaches Christ, Lady Bunny, Heklina, Bianca Del Rio, Pandora Boxx and many more will trade barbs while looking fabulous. (For tickets got to www.thedragqueensofcomedy.eventbrite.com.) While in town you might also want take in a few tourist spots. Start with a tour of the Castro Theatre. This year, marks the Theatre’s 90th anniversary. It is one of the few legendary movie palaces that screens movies in addition to serving as a live performance space. For information on the tours and events, go to www.castrotheatre. com. Another great way to learn about the rich history of the neighborhood, long the hub of the gay community, is the walking tour “Come Out to the Castro.” (Go to www.foottours.com for more information.) Visiting the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park packs an emotional wallop. The living memorial honors all who have confronted this tragic pandemic. Pay tribute to those no longer with us, those who have shared their struggle, kept the vigils, and supported each other during their final hours (aidsmemorial.org.) Another powerful spot is Pink Triangle Park, where 15 granite pylons rise in remembrance of the estimated 15,000 gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders persecuted, imprisoned or killed during and after the Nazi regime. (Go to www.pinktrianglepark.org for more information.) Dolores Park, at the intersection of three distinct neighborhoods; the Castro, Mission District and Noe Valley, is a great spot to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the spectacular views of the city (and equally spectacular views of local hotties). Of course, no visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the historic streetcars on Market Street; it’s a great way to see the city. Stops can be found every few blocks along Market Street and The Embarcadero, between Castro and Fisherman’s Wharf. (For information on routes and rates check out www.streetcar.org.) guymagtube

FITNESS

Squats: The Reigning Supreme by Tom

Bonanti

o

Last week, I took a look at one of the most important weight training exercises for the upper body - the flat bench press. So now that your pecs are nice and sore, let’s turn our attention to the most crucial leg and lower body exercise, the squat. For anyone who is serious about weight training, you know that “leg day” is no walk in the park. Leg routines require, above all others, attention to proper form, serious concentration, and set after set of some of the most important and grueling exercises known in muscledom. In nearly every sport or daily activity, your legs are your most important asset. That’s why squats are often called the “king” of all exercises. The squat involves butt, hamstrings, calves, and quadriceps. In addition to being the best exercise for lower body, squats also involve many upper body muscle groups as well, including deltoids, lats and traps, and abdominals. When you do squats, place a barbell on a squat rack or set up the bar on the Smith machine. Doing squats on a Smith Machine at the outset at least can be safer, but the apparatus does restrict the range of motion of your squat somewhat. Whichever you prefer, use light weight when you begin. Duck under the bar and position it across your shoulders on your trapezius, slightly above the rear deltoids. Grasp the bar using a grip width that is comfortable for your body and pull your

50

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

elbows to the rear. Inhale deeply, rotate your pelvis forward, keep your head up, look straight ahead and carefully lift the bar off of the rack. Move back a step or two from the rack and set your feet shoulder width apart, keeping your toes pointed at an angle slightly outward. Now, here is the most important caution regarding the squat. You must maintain a very erect body position when descending into the deep squat position. Leaning too far forward, or flexing the spine as you squat can be dangerous for your lower back. Once you have descended so your thighs are parallel to the floor, extend your legs and straighten your torso to return to the starting, upright position. There you have it, the perfect squat! I suggest 3 sets of eight to twelve repetitions in every leg training session. A couple of other pointers can help you do squats safely and effectively. First, you should learn how to go down into the squat position so that you are low enough. The top of your thighs should be parallel to the floor in a well executed squat. If you stop the squat any higher than that, you will lose some of the benefit to your butt and hamstrings. Secondly, learn to breathe properly by inhaling as you descend and exhale as you come up. For more tips on how to build a strong lower body with weight training contact Tom Bonanti at trainertomb@aol.com. Check out my gym in Ft. Lauderdale www.pumpnincgym.com!
