Valentine’s Day Gift Guide By Grant James
o
Ah, Valentine’s Day – the romantic holiday we all love to hate. Not because we are incapable of loving, but because the majority of us (men) have a hard time picking out the right present. Your last boyfriend scoffed when you got him a couples massage (which, by the way, who would ever turn that down?), and the last gift you received was either one of those Valentine’s Day-themed Russel Stover bears from CVS, or discounted roses from Publix. That’s right, it’s a curse that such a warm,

romantic holiday has to become murky once presents are involved. What if your financial situation only allows you to get him something that costs less but means more? Or what if you’re a new couple, but you still want to get him something fun that he’ll like? Lucky for you, we’ve taken the liberty of putting together a list of some of the best local spots where you can find the perfect gift for him on this very special day.

If He Has a Sweet Tooth
To the Moon is a neighborhood candy store centered right on the drive that fills the shoes of even the biggest candy connoisseurs. The boutique is home to hundreds of chocolates and candies (many imported from overseas) that are just begging to be devoured. They even have gifts specifically designed for V-Day. In addition to a huge selection of imported candies and chocolates, the store also sells wines, cheeses, pates, novelty cards and gifts, and more. It’s truly your one-stop-shop. To the Moon 954-564-2987. 2205 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. Sweet Treasures, the newly-opened candy, gift, and card in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors offers up a variety of gift ideas: Erotic copies of Greek statues, wine caddies shaped like high heels, same-sex greeting cards, and the real selling point – bulk candy. Now of course you can opt to go with a smaller portion of the candy, but if you have a sweet tooth just as large as your significant other’s, then the bulk size is really a no-brainer. oSweet Treasures 954-317-3463. 2278 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.
If He Has a Sense of Humor
A sense of humor can make the relationship, so picking out the right gift for a funny guy can be a little bit tricky. Thankfully, we have J. Miles right here in Wilton Manors as well. The owner (J. Miles) likes to purchase quirky, offbeat gag gifts every now and then, and let us tell you, they are absolutely hilarious. Hilarious. For example, one of our writers purchased a series of dramatic, 90’s Japanese post cards that all seemed to have a soft lens effect. (Update: They’re still being passed around to this day.) Though a collection of disturbing bobbleheads also caught our eye that last time we were there, the store also carries sexy undies and various romantic gifts for the funny guy with a serious side. oJ. Miles 954-565-8096. 2300 NE 7th Ave, Wilton Maors, 33305. Note: To the Moon also carries a variety of gag gifts. If he’s always wanted a pair of tube socks with the word “bottom” trailing up the sides, get there immediately as quantities are limited.
If He Wants a Fancy Dinner
If he doesn’t want anything materialistic per se, maybe a nice dinner followed by a night in is more your speed. Le Patio has always offered fancy meals at a
guymag.net
fair price, but the real magic is that it’s actually fresh and delicious. No, you won’t be receiving anything frozen or reheated here. The lesbianowned space is warm and friendly, dealing mostly with comfort foods from across the world (mostly from France). Their Prix Fixe menu is already up on their Facebooks, so call now if you need to make reservations. oLe Patio 954-530-4641. 2401 NE 11th Ave, Wilton Manors, 33305. Another romantic type of food that has recently become a trend, are tapas. Tapas, or small plates, are ordered in vast quantities (each plate is enough for two to taste). Essentially appetizers with highgrade ingredients, tapas are the perfect romantic food: you can shovel it in without feeling like a total cow. Our go-to for a romantic evening with Asian tapas, wines, sakes, and more? Dapur Asian Tapas & Lounge. Call to make your reservation today. oDapur Asian Tapas & Lounge 954-306-2663. 1620 N. Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, 33305.
If He’s Just Downright Dirty
If you landed the type of guy who just wants to have sex all the time...Congratulations, and does he have any friends? Wilton Drive’s own Rock Hard is your go-to pleasure emporium, carrying quality products for anyone thats looking to “enhance their sex life,” according to store’s official site. Yes, you’re obviously here for a little kink to kick things up a notch, and there’s not a damn thing wrong with that. With toys, massage oils and lotions, edible treats, books, games, DVDs and more, your sexy V-Day getaway starts here. They also claim to be the place for party favors, boasting the sales of party games and novelty items, so if you two are the kind that think three is company and four is a party, feel free to think outside of the box this holiday. oRock Hard 954-318-7625. 2205 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. Maybe he’s been a good boy and it’s time to finally buy him that new leather harness he’s been wanting? You know, the one that costs the same as a car payment? If he’s been good, you might want to reward him with a harness, jockstrap, ballgag, or if you think wedding bells are in the future, possibly even a sling. All of these things and more are always available at the always inclusive LeatherWerks, located just past Wilton Drive. oLeatherWerks 954-761-1236. 1226 NE 4thAve, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

A Mardi Gras Tea Cruise, Blondie and an Equali-Tea Dance
____________________ Thursday

War Horse oThis multiple award-winning play contains some of the most beautiful set-design in theaters. Its other highlight lies in the innovative puppetry of the central horse-figure. The plot really is just about some horse that goes off to war, and the boy who loves him, and although the trajectory of the horse’s life is rather tedious, the visuals more than make up for this predictable plotline. There also is an incredible connection created through the horse and boy that speaks to animal lovers everywhere. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.
song CD Amore and followed it with Under the Desert Sky, featuring live versions of many of the same songs. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave, Sunrise, 33323.

A Dark Valentine’s Day oValentine’s Day is the day to celebrate your greatest achievement: acquiring a worthy lover. As Facebook posts across America can attest, the most important aspect of a human’s self-esteem stems from a romantic relationship (or a baby). If you have not quite been able to find that special someone, though, a dark, morbid celebration might just be the right activity on this controversial Hallmark holiday. We foresee that during the ‘Dark Day,’ you hide underneath the covers, block all Facebook posts of couples on dates, and read Cathy comic strips until you have no tears left. A bottle of Nyquil and some leftover Vicodin from your wisdom tooth surgery will allow the day and night to pass faster than you can say, “It’s just that I’m pickkkyyy…..” All day at your house/somewhere in South Florida.
Andrea Bocelli oOf course, there’s also a possibility that you actually do have a lover, and then maybe a night out listening to one of the most romantic singers of all time could spark those old loving emotions. Bocelli is so profoundly emotional and soulful that he’s actually blind—all he sees is love, everywhere. This classic Italian tenor is known for bringing classical music to the masses and making people everywhere understand “culture” on a whole new level. Bocelli combines famous opera arias with pop songs like “September Mom” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The prolific artist released the loveguymag.net
Blondie oDeborah Harry takes some time off starring in YouTube videos with John Roberts to come back to her first and greatest love: singing in the new-wave band Blondie. Known for their infection mix of disco, pop, rap and reggae, Blondie had several hits in the early 1980s, including the rap/pop fusion “Rapture” and American Gigolo theme song “Call Me”. After taking a rather long hiatus, Blondie returned in 1997 with hit song “Maria”. The still-active band releases another cd this year, titled Ghosts of Download. The concert tonight at the Fountainebleau includes a 6pm dinner. 8 p.m. (dinner begins at 6 p.m.) Fountainebleau Miami Beach. 4441 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, 33140. 9 Mile Music Festival oRemember crazy Lauryn Hill—critically acclaimed singer who never wanted white people to buy her album? She will be on hand at the 9 Mile Music Festival, an all-day event honoring the life and philosophy of the legendary reggae star, Bob Marley. This festival also has a humanitarian bent to it, having collected and donated over three million cans of food to hunger projects internationally. Canned food collected at admission will benefit Curley’s House, a food bank that provides bulk food products to thousands of needy families and the homeless throughout Miami-Dade County. Come support the needy, honor Bob Marley, and stop worrying…be happy. 12:30 p.m. Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds. 10901 SW 24th Street, Miami, 33165.

Equality Florida Equali-Tea Dance oThe tea dance is one of those strange elements of gay culture without much rhyme or reason. Although Fort Lauderdale hasn’t had a significant tea-dance event for some time, Equali-Tea Florida is hosting a benefit tea dance at The Royal Palms Resort and Spa for a fun afternoon of relaxing by the pool, dancing to the music, drink specials, raffles, and a short program about the work of Equality Florida (if you don’t know, a major gay rights organization who, currently, is working to get us marriage rights in Florida). Dance, drink, and support our equality all at the same time! 2 p.m. Royal Palms Resort and Spa. 717 Breakers Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.
Mardi Gras Tea Cruise o If a tea cruise is more your speed, head down to the Mardi Gras Tea Cruise for an evening of music, entertainment, and of course, beads! Kitty Meow hosts this three-hour-tour, so expect equal parts laughter and mayhem, with sounds by local favorite Maximus 3000. Deja Devonier is also slated to take the stage, as well as dancers from both Johnny’s and Boardwalk (performing under the name MALE2MALE), so there’s no need to play favorites! Limited tickets are available for purchase at gayteacruisesfl.org, so act now. Boarding begins at 4 p.m. Riverwalk South (Smoker Park). 540 SE 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Figure Skating Through Oppression o With the Winter Olympics in its final week, the competition really heats up with tonight’s ice dancing final, followed by Thursday’s premiere moment: ladies figures skating. This year, America’s best hope in the figure skating event is ice dancing. The indisputable favorites for gold, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, won silver in 2010 and have been sweeping international competitions since. It would be the first gold for the United States in Olympic ice dancing. Finally, ice skating queens in America will be able to relax. If you’re not protesting the event, tune into NBC at 8 p.m. to support.

Old wine usually comes from France, Italy and Germany, while younger consumers most likely have enjoyed wine from California, New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Winter Party Festival Makes Last Minute Move to The National Hotel Miami Beach by
Rick Karlin
o
Michael Bath, events director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force announced that the Winter Party Festival (WPF), March 5-10, will have to change venues this year. The move to a new host hotel became necessary when the original host hotel, Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach, informed the Task Force staff that renovations to the property would not be completed in time for the event. The National Hotel Miami Beach has been selected as the new host hotel for the 2014 Winter Party Festival. The location of the popular Under One Sun Pool party has also been moved to National Hotel Miami Beach The nostalgia of 1930s and 1940s Miami Beach is clearly apparent at National Hotel, located in the city’s Art Deco neighborhood. The oceanfront hotel boasts 152 rooms and suites as well as a 205foot long pool lined with palm trees and facing the Atlantic Ocean. “The staff and management of National Hotel are eager to roll out the red carpet for our Winter Party Festival guests,” said Yaser Yohamad, Hotel Manager. “We appreciate being named the new host hotel for the event and look forward to providing a true five-star experience for all our guests.” Guests who had previously booked rooms at the Shelborne have had their reservations trans-

ferred to the new host hotel, which will honor their original room rates. Guests must confirm or cancel their reservations by February 16. As a result of these transfers, The National Hotel is now completely sold out for Winter Party Festival, but additional rooms are available at Gale South Beach and Regent Hotel, The Shore Club and Hotel Gaythering. In addition to serving as the host hotel and Under One Sun Pool Party venue, National Hotel will provide the location for the Welcome Center and the on-site management and production offices for WPF staff and volunteers. The 21st edition of WPF will feature nearly two dozen events. (For a list of the events at Winter Party and HER Winter Party, see sidebar.) Proceeds from WPF and the Miami Recognition Dinner support the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. A significant portion of the proceeds also funds multiple organizations serving the LGBT community in South Florida through a grant made by the Task Force to the GLBT Community Projects Fund of The Miami Foundation. For information on the overflow hotels, visit the WPF website at winterparty.com/travel. Individual WPF event tickets are now on sale along with multi-event passes at winterparty.com/purchase. guymagtube

Minimize Your Mistakes and Maximize Your Workouts by Tom
Bonanti
o
Going to the gym is essential to maintaining good health. It is also the only real fountain of youth available to those of us who want to stay fit and attractive for as long as possible. For all these reasons and more it is important not to waste time or spin your wheels when you are working out! Certain commonly used exercises and techniques are ineffective and just plain unsafe. Here is my list of some time consuming mistakes and bad habits to avoid in the gym. Let me share just a few of them with you this week. Jerking heavy weights on the leg extension machine in an attempt to blast your quadriceps (the muscles on the front of your thighs) is a recipe for a knee disaster. Besides straining knee ligaments, this exercise can over -develop your quads causing your hamstrings (the muscles on the backs of your thighs) to become excessively tight and inflexible. Tight hams in turn can cause low back pain and contribute to injuries. Avoid all this lower body “drama” by sticking with squats, presses, and lunges. I’ve said this before: any exercise where you push or pull a bar that’s positioned behind the neck can damage the rotator cuff muscles that attach your humerus (arm) to your scapula (shoulder). Once you strain or sprain these muscles you are screwed! When you do wide grip lat pull downs or barbell or dumbbell shoulder presses, sit
52
guymag.net
theguymag
theguymag
up straight, point your chest outward and pull or press the weight in front of you. Doing cardio can be a boring waste of time especially if you set your cardio machine too slow every workout. Actually varying your pace and intensity during your hour or so of cardio is a more successful fat loss strategy. The best way to burn calories is by mixing fast and slow speeds. This is also the best way to address the body’s different energy systems and muscle groups. Sit-ups are as useless and ineffective as a high school phys-ed teacher. Locking your feet under a rack or bench and rolling up on your lower back as you pull for dear life on your 7 cervical vertebrae will only give you a sore back. Instead ,do crunches. Keep your feet flat on the floor or slightly elevate your legs over an exercise ball to stabilize your hips. Extend your arms and crunch your torso bringing your elbows to your knees. You can feel the burning in your abs already! When you go to the gym, your main goal is to lift weights, so for God’s sake, use a weight that’s heavy enough so that your muscles feel worked by the end of a set of 8-12 reps. Pyramid your weights up with each set, but be careful to maintain good form with each rep. For more tips on how to maximize your time in the gym, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.
