Blurred Lines Courtney Act Talks Drag Race Season 6, New Single & More

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6 is underway, and RuPaul really has to think about who will take the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” This season has some real contenders, one of which is Courtney Act (real name Shane Jenek). Courtney exudes confidence, but that doesn’t mean Jenek doesn’t enjoy his masculine side as well. We talked to Jenek about his time on Drag Race, his new single (“To Russia With Love”), and what he calls living as both male and female personas. Guy Magazine: How has it been competing on this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race? Courtney Act: It’s every little boys dream! Now i can’t wait to watch it back on TV. What’s it like working with RuPaul? RuPaul walks into a room and you can feel him. The first time we met Ru was in the workroom in his pink suit, I was struck by how handsome and enigmatic he is. It was so cool being inspired by his passion for drag. Who’s your biggest inspiration for drag concepts? I really am inspired by my drag contemporaries that I grew up with in Sydney. Brilliant entertainers like Ashley Swift, Vanity Faire and Dallas Dellaforce. I learned so much from them. Hair, makeup, styling and how to put on a show. Seeing you as Courtney Act is a real transformation, yet you make it look effortless. How long have you been doing drag for now? I started drag in the year 2000. In 2001 I was crowned “DIVA Rising Star” in the Sydney Drag Industry Variety Awards. It was a real cool after only performing for one year. I learnt a lot from growing up in the Priscilla influenced Sydney drag scene. But I have been performing since I was about 5 years old doing singing, dancing and acting lessons. Performing on school holidays at shopping centres and in semi-professional theatre. I played a mouse in Cinderella, a dwarf in Snow White... this was an early form of drag. I have always been wearing costumes and playing dressups. What was your first drag performance like? I am having an acid flashback. I was wearing five pairs of pantyhose, black cotton undies that were so industrial they had a zip, and hook & eye

in the back, and a black synthetic mo-hair top that also doubled as a scarf. My wig’s name was Alison and I performed “Dance 10, Looks 3” from A Chorus Line. Funny that Ru’s comment to me on the main stage was “Body 10, Couture 5.” The show has really helped secure future careers for past contestants like Sharon Needles, Alaska, Phi Phi O’Hara, and of course, last year’s winner Jinkx Monsoon. Are you already gearing up for bigger future gigs due to the show’s popularity? I just saw Jinkx’s show, The Vaudevillians, in Sydney during the Mardi Gras Festival. Oh my god, that girl is talented. I knew she was talented when I saw her on drag race, but I was not prepared for how brilliant she really is. This year I will be touring around the clubs performing my music live, but what I really can’t wait for is to tour my one woman show, Boys Like Me, in live sit-down venues. It’s a 90 minute show that explores my experiences living life on the gender divide, sometimes as a boy and sometimes as a girl and how that manifests in the people I have sex with... you got a taste of that in the first episode of Drag Race Untucked. Tell us a little about your new single, “To Russia with Love.” “To Russia With Love” is a message of solidarity to our brothers and sisters in Russia and not just the LGBT ones, but everyone, even Putin. We can’t fight hate with hate, only love. I think it is important for people to be aware and passionate, and best if we are pointed towards a solution. What musical artists inspire you to perform? Grace Jones, Lady Gaga, Cher, Angel Haze, Beyonce, Robyn, Goldfrapp, Capital Cities, Yoko Ono, Sia... I like strong artists who are in control. Are you working on an album? I am. I have been writing music with people all around the world. Just finished a track in Australia whilst I was there. Sam Sparrow and I penned a really cool track recently too and I have song writing sessions next week in LA. Let’s go out on a fun one. If you had to choose between being the drag mother for Justin Bieber, Ray Liotta, or CeeLo Green, who would you pick? Ah, that’s so easy. I would pick Justin Bieber. Leave me alone in a room with Justin for 15 minutes and I will cure what ails him.

In Ronnie Larsen’s cult play Making Porn, the lives of six people involved in the gay pornographic industry in San Francisco in the early 1980’s collide. Jack Hawk, a straight, out-of-work actor is hired by gay porn producer, Arthur Mack, to star in his newest porn movie Cops. The cast of supporting characters include Ray Tanner, a jaded porn star of the 70’s, newcomer Ricky, and Jamie—Arthur’s long time boyfriend and assistant who falls in love with one of the actors. Getting Psyched and Staying Pumped Muscle Up Your Mind, Body and Spirit

You’ve probably spent enough time in the gym to realize that there are real tangible results that come from pumping iron and churning out cardio. Granite glutes, bulging biceps, a sexy, cut six-pack are but a few of the results of all your sweaty hard labor. But did you also know that exercise can relieve stress and pressure at work, help you think like a creative whiz kid on your feet and generally make you feel rejuvenated and invincible? The benefits of working out that body go way beyond just looking good and showing it off and here’s how! Studies have proven that regular cardio work can enhance the ability of neurotransmitters in the brain to work faster. This higher ability won’t replace a good education or being generally streetsmart, but it can help you to think clearer, quicker and more creatively. As a trainer, I find that clients who are anxious and stressed, over worked, or generally depressed and tired, report feeling energized and upbeat after early morning exercise. As a result, they are more relaxed and confident all day at work, and seem to think more clearly and creatively on the job. While a lot of people cannot realistically work out before work, those clients who do regular cardio and weight training throughout their busy week report basically the same increase in energy, confidence and creativity. The feelings you get after a workout, namely the adrenaline rush and the feeling of overall accomplishment can lift you spirits and boost your energy levels all day long. Do you come home from work and crash in exhaustion? Does your heart race when you’re stuck in traffic of before a big presentation or meeting? You have the power to change this misery. Start doing cardio, or alter your present

cardio routine and don’t forget to pump some iron while you are at it! You might think these activities would add to your overall feelings of stress and tiredness, but you are wrong. Psychologists say that a key element behind failing under pressure is physical fatigue. Regular cardio (running, biking or swimming) actually energizes you and it charges up your brain and body for tough situations – like your ball-busting boss, or those whining donothing co-workers who grate on your nerves and bring you down. Throwing the weights around helps you to alleviate frustration and pent-up aggression as you build gorgeous muscles in the process. If you have trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. Sleep deprivation can literally make you crazy. Without enough good quality sleep-8 to 10 hours a night- you will not be able to perform at work, you will feel frazzled and foggy and lack of sleep can also make you store fat more easily. Instead of groping for another sleeping pill – go for the treadmill instead. Regular cardio exercise lowers your resting pulse rate, can lower blood pressure, revs up your metabolism, improves digestion, and biologically assists your brain in producing feelgood endorphins. Regular exercise will help you function better during the day and rest better at night. How excellent is that? So the next time you hit the gym to tighten and tone that body, remember the good you’re doing for your mind and spirit as well!
