Dancing with the South Florida Stars Meet the Teams- Part 1 by

Grant James

o

Each year, Dancing with the South Florida Stars puts your favorite local entertainers under one roof, where they must fight to the death for all to see. Ok, not really, but when a dance competition is involved, it may as well be to the death. The reason the event is so entertaining is because the participants (some experienced, some not) train and practice for one month before the performance, much like Dancing with the Stars. The twist, is seeing your favorite locals cut the rug like never before. Maybe you’ll see your favorite bartender from Village Pub perform the salsa. Or what if your preferred dancer from Boardwalk is going to be doing the tango? Dancing with the South Florida Stars will also be presenting Peter Jackson with the “Making a Difference Health and Wellness Community Leadership Award” this year. The event is sure to bring memories, and from now until the event on April 21, we’ll be unveiling each team for readers.

stars pulling in an international crowd. Representing Boardwalk are dancers Esman and Eduardo. Esman told us that he, like many of the contestants, is in it to win it. But when we asked what kind of dance the two would be performing for the crowd, Esman was protective of his performance. “You’ll have to come out and see for yourself – it’s a surprise,” the spunky dancer said, flashing a smile.

Boardwalk

Boardwalk features some South Florida’s hottest male dancers, and frequently sees appearances by world-renowned adult video stars, like Angel Rock, Jeff Stryker and many more. Chi Chi LaRue is also known to drop by for special events. Boardwalk also hosts the International Male Escort Awards (called the “Hookies”) once a year. An 18-and-over club, Boardwalk features private lap dances and dancers to appeal to a wide range of ages and shapes, from twinks to studs. The club has two stages, located at either end of the main bar, and is also the home of the world famous restaurant, Beefcake’s.Boardwalk is popular with locals and visitors, with nightly events and special guest guymag.net

Following it’s grand opening last March, it didn’t take long for New York Grilled Cheese Co. to become one of the Drive’s dining staples. Luring in people from all over the tri-county area, the restaurant amps up the traditional grilled cheese, transforming their selections into gourmet sandwiches that everyone will love. Sandwich names are influenced by the Big Apple itself; The Fifth Avenue Yelp Melt (which just came to an end last week), the Broadway Classic and the Blue Buffalo to name a few. The sandwiches are made to order on a fresh country loaf, which is then pressed (giving it the appearance of a waffle) to give the ultimate crunch. While we always knew it would be a hit, New York Grilled Cheese Co. has been mentioned (favorably) in a number of publications, including year-end “best of” lists. The grilled cheese mogul will be represented by owner Leor Barak’s partner, Ryan Steinberg, along with the fierce Mia Patrick, who performs at a number of clubs in the area (Bill’s Filling Station, Rumors and Discotekka to name a few). These two dancers mean business! theguymag

TJ Hoban: Here, Not Out by

Gregg Shapiro

o

Almost everything about the new gay sitcom From Here On Out is designed to make you laugh. From the clever title (Here TV + Out Magazine are owned by the same conglomerate = From Here On Out, get it?) to the kooky sexual situations in which the characters find themselves. The show even pokes fun at itself and the reputation of the network on which it airs. When you’re not laughing, you can gaze dreamily at straight (but not narrow) lead actor TJ Hoban of the eight-pack fame. A flawless fitness model who not only graced the covers of countless muscle mags, but one who will also be a familiar face to those who subscribed to and perused the pages of the infamous and prescient International Male and Undergear catalogs. Here’s the best part: Not only is he attractive enough to cause weakness in the knees, he’s also a genuinely nice guy. A Chicago-native, TJ (which stands for Thomas Joseph) is smart and funny and easy to talk to. We had the pleasure of speaking with him shortly before the premiere of From Here On Out. Guy Magazine: When did you first become interested in bodybuilding? TJ Hoban: I got into fitness, actually, on accident. I started training with weights when I was 12. I was just a little runt with glasses and braces. Yeah, all the way through high school I couldn’t even get a date, let alone even talk to a girl. I needed to do something. I guess it’s the old Charles Atlas story [laughs]. That’s when I originally started working out and it stuck with me. It became a part of my life and, actually, a coping mechanism for me ever since I was a kid. Now it’s something I do, five, six times a week, an hour a day. I started my professional career as a fitness model, shooting all the bodybuilding magazines, in, I think, my senior year. I happened to go to San Diego on spring break. A photographer stopped me on the beach and said, “I love to shoot you and submit you to some of these other people that I have connections with.” How did you respond to that? I thought it was weird, at first. But he talked me

26

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

into it. I brought one of my buddies for backup and we shot some cool stuff on the beach. From there I started working with International Male Magazine, a catalog back in the day. I took those pictures I took with the photographer and sent them to all the fitness mags. Next thing you know, they all started calling and I started shooting all this fitness stuff. Then I’m doing endorsement deals for fitness products and workout programs all kinds of things. From Bowflex to you name it. A lot of the infomercials you see on TV. That’s kind of what started my fitness career. When did you become interested in acting? guymagtube

I originally started when I was very young. My mother put me in drama when I was six. I didn’t love it at all. I wanted to go play baseball. She wanted me to go to drama with my sisters. We actually had a standoff. I ran away for about three hours [laughs]. We reached a happy medium where I would still be able to play baseball and go to drama. After a few years of doing a few things around the city of Chicago, where I grew up, touring around and doing plays and musical stuff, I stopped. It wasn’t until college, when I was studying for my LSATs for law school and majoring in finance and I was loaded up with work, I would watch General Hospital, which I had started watching as a kid. At the time, Antonio Sabato was on the show and I would think, “Man, I could do that! That looks a helluva lot easier than what I’m doing right now” [laughs]. Ever since I was young, I really enjoyed performing. You play actor Sam in From Here On Out. What is appealing to you about playing this character? It was definitely a challenge for me. I’d never had the opportunity to play a character who was in the closet (as) straight. To me, that was what was different about the role. Also, it’s a sitcom. Often times it’s cliché to see someone who’s in the closet who is gay, but not straight. For me, to flip it on its head, was really unique and interesting and I welcomed the challenge. There’s a lot of stuff in the show that naturally, as a person, makes me kind of uncomfortable. But I’ve always been taught that when it comes to acting, those things that make you uncomfortable are the things that usually get the best out of you. Instead of shying away from them, tackle them. I also thought the script was amazing, which made it pretty easy. I’m glad you brought up comfort, because in the second episode, we learn that while Sam isn’t gay, he doesn’t mind being perceived as being gay. How do you, as a straight actor, feel about that subject, TJ? I’ve been shooting fitness and underwear campaigns for years. Some of those fitness mags are geared towards a gay demographic. You can always tell by the ads in the back of the magazine. A lot of the underwear campaigns, especially International Male and Undergear, they were how I got started, and they had a big gay following as well. I’m very comfortable in those situations and I’m very comfortable in my own skin. How other people perceive me? To me, it’s something that is mostly out of my hands. People are going to see what they want to see anyway. One person’s fantasy is different than another’s. You have acted in both comedies and dramas. Do you have a preference?

guymag.net

That’s a great question. I’m built for action/adventure, but I love comedy. If somebody said to me, “You can either be an action star or you can have your own sitcom with a live studio audience that will have a heck of a run, which one would you rather do?” [Laughs] I’ve got to tell you, they both appeal to me in different ways. The action star appeals to the machismo. Growing up I had all the G.I. Joes and I watched Rambo and Rocky and Schwarzenegger. You think, “I want to be a bad guy like that! Kick people’s asses and save the day.” But then with comedy, it’s fun. When you’re on set with a bunch of funny people, it makes the time fly. From Here On Out employs self-deprecating humor, beginning with the way it pokes fun at some bodybuilders being portrayed as less intelligent. You mentioned studying for your LSATs, so how do you feel about that portrayal and would you say that bodybuilders you know have a sense of humor about that? I worked with Arnold (Schwarzenegger) and one of the things that stuck with me the most after meeting his was his sense of humor. He’s got a great sense of humor. As an actor, I really enjoy comedy, not just because I enjoy laughing, but because I enjoy making other people laugh at my own expense. I don’t mind. I know where I’m at in terms of my intelligence and my morals and the decisions I make in life and the quality of person I hold myself to be. That enables me to make fun of myself in pretty much any manner I want. ... In terms of body builders, they are often times perceived as not the sharpest tools in the shed because they put so much emphasis on their bodies. It’s a stereotype. People like to compartmentalize on the whole. The better looking you are, typically, the stupider you must be. Are you old enough to remember Juliet Mills, who plays Taylor’s nanny Dottie in From Here On Out, when she played the nanny in Nanny & The Professor, and if so, did you watch it as a kid? I don’t remember that show. But I do remember her on (soap opera) Passions. I did a day-player role on Passions as a porn-star named Gary. That was the first time that I actually keyed in to who she was. I started watching Passions because I was on the show and that’s where I first saw her and I thought she was fantastic. Fast forward and I finally have the chance to work with her. She’s amazing. She’s a delight; a wonderful actress who’s an ambassador for the arts. And game to do stuff like From Here On Out. She loves acting and she’s also a great spirit. She has great energy on set and is a joy to work with.

UPCOMING EVENT

Maverick Follows The Light Pris Maverick to performing at Village Pub by

Grant James

o

While trying to make her way in the music biz, German born singer-songwriter Pris Maverick worked as a personal trainer, teaching yoga and pilates at high end resorts in Miami. One of her students heard her sing and connected her with producer Tony Collucio, who had just scored a Billboard hit with Inaya Daye on “Make Some Noise”. Sharing a belief that music has the power to unite people, the two began recording socially conscious dance tracks penned by Maverick through the house music label, Dauman Music. They included “Mirror” (about the importance of loving oneself) and “One World, One Nation”, their song about world peace that landed at #6 on the commercial pop charts last month. Next up, they are preparing to unleash a new collaboration, “Follow The Light”. It’s a powerhouse dance anthem that is expected to lead Maverick to brand new heights. What one word describes you? Driven. How are you putting your stamp on today’s music? My sound and my lyrics are very different from what’s out there right now. I unite energetic, dynamic electro beats together with dub step elements. What inspires your songwriting? Life. Good things, bad things, anything that really grabs my attention. It’s absolutely not my intention to preach or to point fingers but there are some things I truly believe need to be said. Like what? Like we cannot continue living like this, destroying the planet and exploiting its natural resources. I could scream all day long about it but it wouldn’t help anything or anybody. Socially conscious artists usually inhabit the soft rock genre. What attracted you to pop-dance? I love music that moves people; music that brings the heart rate up and makes everyone want get up and dance. I think my tracks prove it is possible to combine super hot beats with food for thought. Tell us about the new single. I am very excited and proud of “Follow The Light”. It’s about believing in all life’s goodness. Even when you feel like everything is colliding on top of your head, remember the light within you and that things are never as dark as they might

30

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

seem. I think it is a true feel-good-song. It starts off soft with spiritual notes but then builds and keeps on building into a powerful, electronic chorus. It has a bit of Latin flavor. Yes! I admire the way Latin people live their lives. I think we can learn a lot from their culture. I even recorded the track in Spanish. The Spanish version will be released as “Sigue La Luz”. What is the biggest problem in North America? Greed. The accumulation of wealth has become too important. What do you hope listeners take away from the song? I hope they begin to see that life is an incredible, beautiful journey. Every moment is unique and precious because it will never return. Can one person really make change? I don’t know. I can at least create a spark. Then maybe together we can make it all possible. Pris Maverick will be performing at the Village Pub on Thursday, April 10. American Wonders oThe photography world showcases so many diverse subjects. From the famous Pulitzer prize winning photos of shooting victims, or hungered babies with vultures circling around, or the depression era family and their dirtied, hopeless faces. Tonight, though, a more optimistic and familiar subject is on display: the beauty of spectacular scenes and animals from national parks across America and around the world. The photography by Albert Barg, Jeff Weisberf, and Brandon Quarters give new perspectives to these awesome spectacles. A Queer Philosophical Discussion oAs part of the Reading Queer initiative of South Florida, poets Maureen Seaton and Julie Marie Wade discuss the word “queer” and what it means to the artist. Is all art-making inherently queer, particularly in a world that devalues art and consigns most artists to the margins of mainstream work? Could queerness be a kind of potential we all have to express ourselves creatively, apart from gender, race, orientation, etc? These esteemed poets will explore the issue of queerness and the ability to tap into its potent force tonight. 5 p.m. Stonewall Wilton Manors Gallery. 2157 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Holland America Eurodam

Cruising the Northern Climes by

Rick Karlin

o

Last week we took a look at Mediterranean cruises to enjoy this coming summer, but summer is also the perfect time to explore those Northern regions which might be too foreboding the rest of the year. Atlantis has an all-gay cruise heading to the land of the midnight sun from July 20 through 27. The journey begins in gay-friendly Copenhagen, then heads to Norway, with a full day in its majestic capital Oslo, home of Europride 2014. From there it’s on to historical Gothenburg, Sweden before sailing into port city of Warnermunde and boarding a private train to Berlin. After a day in Berlin, you’ll sail to Estonia, Helsinki, and arrive in Stockholm. The entire trip is on the Holland America Eurodam which has two pool decks, a spa and fully equipped fitness center. A two-story restaurant offers soaring views of the ocean and awardwinning cuisine. Three other specialty restaurants offer outstanding choices for a special occasion, and of course, there are numerous cafes and 24hour room service. Queens Lounge offers cabaret

entertainers, and there’s a sing along piano bar. After an open-air film screening the pool deck turns into a dance floor with three world-famous DJs spinning well into the midnight sun. Fares start at $999, round trip air fare from Fort Lauderdale is about $1,200. Meanwhile, RSVP is offering the Amsterdam Pride River Cruise from July 23 through Aug. 1. The trip begins in Zürich with two nights at the Marriott Zürich Hotel. With two full days, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy Zürich’s fine culinary highlights, unlimited shopping, more than 50 museums, and fantastic nightlife. Then you’ll transfer to Basel, to board Affinity. After sailing, your first stop takes is Strasbourg, the capital of France’s Alsace region, with optional excursions to Alsace’s famed vineyards. From there, you’ll cruise to Speyer, Germany with excursions to Heidelberg and the world-famous Schloss Castle ruins. The next stop is Mainz, one of Germany’s loveliest wine towns. The boat doesn’t sail until the next morning, so late night explorations are possible. The next day you’ll sail through the Rhine Gorge, one of the most guymagtube

dramatic and awe-inspiring stretches of the river. Medieval castles tower above you until you arrive in Cologne at sunset. Cologne is Germany’s most liberal city with a thriving gay scene of nearly 30 bars, clubs, cafes, and bathhouses. After a relaxing day aboard the boat sailing, while there is no pool aboard the ship, there is a hot tub on the top deck, you’ll arrive in Amsterdam the day before its celebrated Pride Festival. You’ll overnight on the Affinity, providing the perfect leaping off point for the festival. An optional post-cruise stay at Hotel Pulitzer will allow you to enjoy the festival and relax before heading back home. Fares range from $3399 to $4499. Round-trip air fares are about $1,600 from Fort Lauderdale. Have you ever said, I’d sure like to take Mom/ Dad/Aunt Betty or somebody straight-but-openminded on a gay cruise? Brand g company specializes in tours that are inclusive; featuring a mix of gay men and lesbians, as well as straight allies. Brand g’s LGBT Friends and Family Alaskan group cruise on the Celebrity Solstice July 11-18, will sail from Seattle, and after a full day at seas, stops at Ketchikan, Alaska. You’ll have a day to explore the city, renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty,

fishing and colorful native culture. Trace the steps of the early settlers, take in the Misty Fjords National Monument in Tongass National Forest or stop by observation areas where you can glimpse spawning salmon and enjoy an up-close encounter with bald eagles. Next on the Alaskan cruise, you’ll sail through the Tracy Arm Fjord, on your way to Juneau, the only US state capital accessible by air or ship only. Day five brings you to Skagway, where, in 1897, gold stampeders from all over the world began their expedition into Canada’s Yukon Territory. The Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park offers the unique opportunity of a walking tour to some of the downtown locales frequented by the thousands of prospectors and miners that made their way through Skagway. After a day at sea, you’ll arrive in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. The city is a gentle blend of colonial England and contemporary Western Canadian culture. This is your last stop before returning to Seattle. Prices range from $1,750 to just over $2,000, making a Concierge class stateroom with a veranda not much more than a standard ocean-view room. Round-trip air fares from Fort Lauderdale are about $550.

Ambrosia Greek Bistro by

Although there are a fair amount of sirloin, herbs, spices, and a bechamel sauce on Greek restaurants in South Florida, it’s top, this dish was what dreams are made of. It was comforting without going over the top with hard to find that rich, savory comfort food you’ve been craving, let alone something starches (it comes with sauteed vegetables and a rice pilaf on the side), making it a great choice for that’s been made from scratch. FITNESS

Streamline Your Waistline Sculpting the Perfect Six Pack

by Tom

Bonanti

Want to build muscle, but just can’t find the time to hit the gym? Do you get discouraged because your job prohibits you from dedicating endless hours to a bodybuilding regime? Are you one of those rare breed who believe that there is more to life than working out? Well here’s good news for everyone. You can build quality muscle and improve overall fitness in less time than you think! I call this my Slam-Bam Routine and it has two great things in its favor. First, you can get your whole workout done in about 30 minutes. Second, because your testosterone levels start to drop between 45-60 minutes into a heavy weight training session as cortisol (a bad, stressful hormone) levels rise, you can make the most of your natural juices and avoid overtraining! The workout uses “giant sets”, a body building concept that employs a multiple number of sets in a minimal amount of time. Giant sets can be performed in several ways, but with this routine you will do at least 5 sets back to back, each on a different muscle group. Use weight that will challenge you for 12 reps and remember to rest minimally between sets. Now, let’s slam through upper body. The first exercise of the five set cycle is the incline dumbbell press. This exercise works chest. After a 30 second rest, move on to the wide grip lat pull down for that “V” shaped back. Seated dumbbell over-

head presses are next for shoulders. Pump triceps with a set of 15-20 dips. Finish round one of this monster routine with a set of standing dumbbell curls for biceps and forearms. After a two minute rest, perform this giant set two more times. Up your weight on each set by about 2 per cent if you can manage it. Adhere to proper form with each exercise. Perform 8 to 12 reps for each set. You can also perform giant sets for lower body on the same day as upper body depending upon your strength and stamina. Or you can work upper body and lower body on different days depending upon how much time you have. Use squats, leg presses, leg curls, stiff-leg dead lifts, lunges and a high repetition calf raise (15-20 reps) to slam quads, hamstrings, calves and butt. Perform 3 giant sets for legs. Rest minimally between exercises and two – three minutes between giant sets (a little more rest may be needed for legs as compared to upper body). Work abdominals by doing crunches at anytime during these workouts or on off days. Using my Slam-Bam Routine you can train both upper and lower body 2-3 times per week. Always remember to rest 2 days per week For more tips on how to turn up the heat on your workouts don’t hesitate to contact me, TrainerTomB@aol.com .
