Lady Gaga artRAVE May 4 – BB&T Center

Summer Concert Guide

Shows You Need to See This Summer by

Grant James

o

We would begin this feature with “summer is finally here,” but since it’s warm in South Florida year-round, let’s just say, “it’s getting hotter!” Fortunately, every crowd has a silver lining; With this vile heat, we see a number of pretty spectacular artists coming through the tri-county area. From an artRAVE to a techno block party, your options are anything but limited. Below are the 10 shows you absolutely HAVE to see this summer. (Remember, these shows will likely sell out by the show date, so get your tickets as soon as possible.)

Lady Gaga artRAVE May 4 – BB&T Center

When she’s not using facelift tape (yes, that’s an actual thing that she confessed to), Lady Gaga is selling out multiple tours with pizazz and charm. Currently, the “G.U.Y.” singer is on her artRAVE: The Artpop Ball tour and will be making a stop right here in sunny South Florida on May 4 at the BB&T Center. This tour is reported to be even whackier than the Born This Way Ball, so be prepared! Head to LadyGaga.com for tickets and more on Mother Monster.

The Bloody Beetroots May 15 – Revolution Live

Italian electronic duo The Bloody Beetroots are aggressive, jarring, in-your-face, and just completely balls-to-the-wall insane. They’re rowdy, they crowd surf and they wear Venom masks (also known as the villain that nightmares are made of from Spiderman). Enough said. This is a dark electronic rave packed wall-to-wall with hardcore (or possibly amateur) partiers. This is for those of you who want to let it all hang out. For tickets to the show, visit jointherevolution.net.

Cher May 17 – BB&T Center

Very few people in this world can pull off the “one name” name – Beyonce, Madonna and Retta from Parks and Recreation to name a few – but Cher takes the cake. Cher is like a cockroach and will outlive us all, and for that, we must respect her. All jokes aside, Cher is a force to be reckoned with. An actress, singer, mother and an icon for the LGBT community, Cher is definitely making the world a better, happier place, one outrageous costume at a time. For tickets to the ultimate diva’s concert, head to tour.cher.com.

Neon Trees May 29 – Revolution Live

You might remember “Everybody Talks” by Neon Trees. It was a catchy, fun pop-rock song that launched the band, Neon Trees, into the spotlight, leading to a decent career. Recently, lead singer Tyler Glenn came out of the closet, in a sort of matter-of-fact way, ala Ellen Page or Jodie Foster. See the brave and equally talented Glenn and his band Neon Trees at the intimate Revolution Live in downtown Fort Lauderdale. For tickets, visit jointherevolution.net.

Florida-native Diplo headlines Mad Decent Block Party July 26 Downtown Fort Lauderdale

Katy Perry July 2 – BB&T Center

A once innocent Christian singer, Perry has come a long way. What started as a playful kiss with a girl inevitably lead to an engagement with John Mayer, which we’re hoping was just due to Perry being under the influence of strong witchcraft harnessed by Mayer. Her newest album, “Prism,” is a major departure from previous works, offering more of an edge than previous works. For tickets to Perry’s show, visit katyperrytour.net

Mad Decent Block Party July 26 - Downtown Fort Lauderdale

Florida-native Diplo went from being one of the coolest underground DJs (working with M.I.A. just as her career was starting as well) to being one of the top-paid DJs in world that also owns his own record label, called Mad Decent Records. We don’t know how it happened, but we’re not complaining. He’s talented, he’s sweet, he’s humble and he’s a total babe. The Mad Decent Block Party is essentially Diplo’s friends (including Dillon Francis and Zeds Dead), or label-mates, that come down once a year to downtown Fort Lauderdale for one hell of a block party (at the corner of SW 3rd Ave and Broward Blvd) . Trust us, this party is totally worth it. For tickets, visit MadDecentBlockParty.com.

Tori Amos August 24 – Fillmore Miami Beach

Tori Amos is still kicking ass, and yes, she has a new album coming out; “Unrepentant Geraldines,” scheduled for release on May 13. The alternativerock icon, now 50, can still fill large venues, due in part to her die-hard LGBT fanbase, who have stuck around Amos since day one. You won’t want to miss this show as it’s at the intimate, spectacular Fillmore Miami Beach (at the Jackie Gleason Theater). Visit toriamos.com/tours for tickets and pricing details. Tickets for all events listed can also be found on LiveNation.com.

#DWTSFS UPDATE

Dancing with the South Florida Stars Meet the Teams- Part 3 by

Grant James

o

Each year, Dancing with the South Florida Stars puts your favorite local entertainers under one roof, where they must fight to the death for all to see. Ok, not really, but when a dance competition is involved, it may as well be to the death. The reason the event is so entertaining is because the participants (some experienced, some not) train and practice for one month before the performance, much like Dancing with the Stars. The twist, is seeing your favorite locals cut the rug like never before. Maybe you’ll see your favorite bartender from Village Pub perform the salsa. Or what if your preferred dancer from Boardwalk is going to be doing the tango? Dancing with the South Florida Stars will also be presenting Peter Jackson with the “Making a Difference Health and Wellness Community Leadership Award” this year. The event is sure to bring memories, and from now until the event on April 21, we’ll be unveiling each team for readers.

Discotekka

Discotekka is one of downtown Miami’s hottest night clubs. It brings in droves of hunky latinos, raves, foam parties, blackout parties, and everything in between. The club is located in the heart of downtown Miami, and is often referred to as the “Best Saturday night in town.” It isn’t hard to see why, as it’s certainly one of the biggest. Different rooms inside of the club give of very different vibes: Perhaps one is playing Salsa or Reggaeton, while the other two

28

guymag.net

play different forms of electronic music. There’s really something for everyone. Representing one of Miami’s biggest gay hangouts is Sasha Lords. Lords has performed at a number of clubs, including The Manor (on Friday nights), Mekka and Palace Bar. Lords has also been crowned Miss Noche Latina, and has taken place in the Miss Florida Pageant as well.

Alibi

Alibi is Wilton Drive’s favorite spot on a Thursday night. Those mason jars are lethal, but people guzzle them like it’s..well, a jar full of liquor. This video bar is the place to be seen, or to simply sit at a table with friends in an effort to catch up over some dinner. The food, which is spectacular, is always changing, so it doesn’t ever get boring. The drinks are reasonably priced, the crowd is massive, and the faces are both familiar and unfamiliar (thank god). Representing the bar is Greyson Jackson, a dancer from Boardwalk. Richard Anthony, a member of the 501 nonprofit social service SunServe, will be his partner. “We’re doing a classic ballroom dance,” Jackson tells us. “I’m very excited that I was included in the competition. It serves as a confirmation for me. It means my dancing at Boardwalk has finally paid off. It’s nice to know that people believe in you.” Watch out competitors, because Jackson has some actual training. “I have over 10 years of dance training,” he says, “specifically ballet, modern/contemporary and hip-hop.”

THE WEEK

Dancing with the South Florida Stars, Island City Artwalk and a Fundraiser for Nan Rich ____________________ Thursday

4/17

Alibi Thirsty Thursdays o The grandest night of the week happens on Thursdays when George’s Alibi unleashes its wildest monster: $3 long island ice tea. Served in a mason jar, the $3 long island ice tea wreaks havoc on any person who indulges in its sweet yet ferocious charms. By midnight on these infamous Thursdays, an Alibi Thirsty Thursday guest is usually wandering around the mini-mall parking lot, stumbling as less drunk friends try holding him/her up. More drinks may be consumed at this point, and said guest is now comatose in a corner. The next morning a hangover and missed workday lead to questions like “Was it all worth it?” The answer: yes. 9 p.m. George’s Alibi. 2266 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

4/18

Island City Art Walk oMost people walking along The Drive are looking for a drink or a roll in the hay. For one night a month, though, Island City Art Walk attempts to bring a bit of culture to the whole Wilton Drive

affair. Local, national, and international talent present their work during this monthly event. All mediums are featured, including art installations, traditional painting, sculpture, and photography. This month’s featured artist is Lynn Dolan and the work “Summer Awakened.” With 7 galleries and numerous business sponsors, the Wilton Manors’ Art and Entertainment District is growing rapidly. This event showcases the new motif of The Drive: Art+Commerce. 7 p.m. Wilton Dr (various locations), Wilton Manors, 33305.

Steve Aoki oMiami native and international DJ superstar Steve Aoki performs his set at the poolside stage at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. The American electro house musician not only creates his own work but has been a Grammy nominated record producer and founder of Dim Mak Records. His acrobatic crowd surfing stunts lend a bit of excitement to his performances. He’s been known to throw cake at fans, spray champagne bottles, and even ride rafts on the dance floor. His father was the founder of Benihana and a former Japanese wrestler. Obviously, some of the Aoki’s outrageous behavior runs in his genetic material. 7 p.m. Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. 1 Seminole Way, Fort Lauderdale, 33314.

Slam Poetry oPoetry slams have been a cultural phenomenon for decades now. Poets present their work in unique spoken word performances that are much more than just a reading. At this afternoon’s Poetry Slam, a panel of judges will consider the merits of the participants. They will judge the poem’s merit, dramatic appropriateness, level of difficulty, the poet’s physical presence, the poet’s voice and articulation, and the crowd’s response. The lucky winner will have their poem recorded professionally, placed on a CD, and uploaded to a dedicated website. 2 p.m. African American Research Library and Cultural Center. 2650 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33311.

M Factor Competition oSome of the greatest music comes from the 70s and 80s, as local radio station Magic 102.7 FM understands. To highlight these wonderful decades in American music history, Magic 102.7 FM and Bud Light present The M Factor, a magic music competition. Local bands will cover the greatest hits of the 70s and 80s for a chance to be crowned the M Factor Champion. The winning band receives $1000 in cash and the honor to perform at the Great American Beach Party Memorial Day weekend. Come find out which local bands are worth it and which ones just don’t cut it. The competition begins at 6:00pm at America’s Backyard. 6 p.m. America’s Backyard. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Easter Bunny in Drag oEaster may be a time for baskets, but the Easter Bunny himself would blush at the baskets the dancers of Boardwalk and Johnny’s have on display tonight on the Easter Gay Tea Cruise. Once a month, the Gay Tea Cruise sets sail from Riverwalk’s Smoker Park. The three-hour tour includes elegant views of the Intercoastal, drinks aplenty, and a buffet. Music from DJ Greyson Jubilee ensures a packed dance floor, while host Kitty Meow provides the laughs. The beneficiaries for the Easter Gay Tea Cruise include the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation and Your Hopper Inc. Not only is the Easter Gay Tea Cruise a rollicking good time, but it also helps fun worthy charities of the community. 5:30 p.m. (Boarding from 5-5:30 p.m.), River Walk South - Smoker Park. 540 SE 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Dancing with the South Florida Stars oIt’s kind of fun watching Hollywood celebrities perform the foxtrot and the passé doble, but it’s so much more fun watching local celebrities (mostly drag queens) attempt similar dance routines, especially with the proceeds donated to charities for people living with HIV/AIDS. Poison Ivy and Kitty Meow host the fourth installment of Dancing with the South Florida Stars, with red carpet commentary provided by Joe Posa (dressed as Joan Rivers, presumably). Different teams of dancers have formed from South Florida establishments such as Village Pub, Alibi, Palace, and even this here magazine. Dancing, catty commentary, and a tribute to Tina Turner—this event is sure to sweep you off your feet. 7:30 p.m. Manor Complex. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

FITNESS

Light A Fire Under Your Workouts by Tom

Bonanti

o

There is no need for workouts to become boring. Likewise, no one should ever throw in the towel if a fitness regime isn’t achieving the desired results. Every fitness enthusiast or body builder hits a brick wall occasionally, but perseverance is the key to success in any endeavor. Journaling your workouts at the gym, finding a reliable workout partner, hiring a personal trainer and even doing some research on the internet can help you come up with fresh techniques for your exercise program. This week let me share with you a few dynamite techniques that are sure to set some major fire under those springtime workouts. Get ready to feel the burn! “Superset” is a widely misused term. Technically, a superset is when you train two opposing muscle groups (i.e. biceps versus triceps, back versus chest, quads versus hamstrings, etc.) with only a small break between exercises. For example, you may do a set of flat bench dumbbell presses for chest, then move quickly using the same weights into a bent over dumbbell one arm row. Go back and forth for three sets of each. Take a break and then alternate incline dumbbell presses and wide grip lat pull downs. Supersets create balance and joint strength and allow one muscle group a brief rest while you blast its opposing muscle group. “Compound sets” are great especially if you have a problem muscle group that won’t grow. These are my favorites! Compound sets employ two intense exercises for the same muscle group.

52

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

For example, a standing barbell curl can be combined with a preacher curl to really fry those biceps. Perform a set of barbell curls to exhaustion, then move to a set of killer preacher curls to isolate those twin peaks. If you’re really cruising for a burn, go for tri-sets. This means simply that you add a third or even a fourth exercise to the above torture as you max out those mighty arms. “Forced reps” are a great way to push muscles just a little harder, once they’ve been pretty much exhausted. Just when you think you can’t do another curl, press or squat, recruit someone else’s muscles to help you! That’s right, get a trainer or buddy to help you squeeze out a couple of forced reps before you rack your weights. Learn to accentuate the negative. I’m not talking attitude, I’m referring to your reps! When I train clients, I’ll often have them focus on the negative or eccentric contraction during an exercise. For example, during a bicep curl, explode as you bring the weight to your chin (concentric or positive contraction) then as you lower the weight, slow down and focus as you push your muscles to a new level of fatigue. Try doing negatives with bi’s, tri’s, chest, legs, etc., once a month to maximize size and strength. Wanna really feel the burn and grow this spring? Contact trainertomb@aol.com! Check out www.pumpnincgym.com. Call now and set up your free intake with Tom at (954) 557-1119.
