A Tour of Pride From Stonewall to Vegas by

We’re gearing up to celebrate Stonewall Summer Pride here in Wilton Manors on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday June 22. It all kicks off on Saturday evening when the Rainbow Business Coalition and AIDS Healthcare foundation present the Stonewall Summer Pride parade with Grand Marshall, Channel 7’s Craig Stephens. The parade will followed by DJ Kidd Madonny with his unique musical style and his incredible laser light show. On Sunday, June 23, the 13th annual Stonewall Summer Pride (formerly Stonewall Street Festival) takes over Wilton Drive from 11 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. This year’s event will feature live entertainment, exhibits, food and drink, a children’s park, and main stage entertainment. Key West Pride is from June 11-15 and St Pete celebrates Pride Weekend June 27-29. Or, you could wait until October (Gay & Lesbian History Month) and attend Jacksonville’s parade on Oct. 5, Orlando’s celebration from Oct. 6 through 12 or hit Sarasota’s Pridefest on October 18. celebrate Pride during June, the official GLBT Pride month, with parades traditionally on the last weekend of the year. Some neighboring cities hold their events on alternate weekends to allow people to attend both events. Other places hold their pride celebrations at other times of the year to accommodate climate conditions (you wouldn’t want to march down the streets of Palm Springs in June, believe me.) Long Beach gets the jump on Pride with a celebration on 17 and 18. If you plan on attending a majority of these celebrations, you’ll not only be bursting with Pride, but you’ll also rack up some frequent flier miles. Boston kicks off Pride Month with celebrations from June 6 through 16. During that time period, you’ll also see events in Honolulu (June 7,) Detroit’s Motor City Pride (7 – 8,) Philly Gay Pride (June 8,) Washington D.C.’s Capital Pride (6 – 8,) Los Angeles Pride (6 – 8) takes place in WeHo, Portland Pride (14 – 15,) Alaska PrideFest in Anchorage (7-14) and Pittsburgh Pride (14-15.) Gay Pride New Orleans follows up on June 20 – 22, Gay Pride Fest Denver (21 – 22,) Rhode Island celebrates Pride in Providence (21-22,) Sioux Falls gathers for Pride in McKennan Park (21,) and in Houston they’re so proud it takes nine days (21 – 30.) Chicago’s Pridefest is June 21 22) followed by one of the nation’s largest Pride parades on June 29. That final week of June is jam-packed with celebrations. San Francisco’s weekend of Pride (28 – 29) is always the most outrageous, while New York City has two days of celebrations leading up to the nation’s largest parade on June 29. Also celebrating that last weekend, usually with the parades on Sunday, are; Minneapolis’ Twin Cities Pride (28 – 29,) Cleveland Pride (28) and Seattle (28 – 29.) Some like to arrive fashionably late to parties and these cities wait until later in the summer to observe Pride. San Diego Pride takes place July 16 through 20, while downtown Charleston, SC comes alive Aug. 2-10 and Oakland closes out the month with its Gay Pride on August 31. September offers more than back-to-school sales. It also features Pride celebrations. Las Vegas Pride (5 – 6) kicks things off, followed by Burlington, Vt. (7-14,) Austin, TX (20) and Dallas (21.) Helping close out the month is the 25th Annual South Carolina Pride Festival in Columbia, on Sept. 20. Other fall celebrations include Atlanta (Oct. 11 – 12) Palm Springs (Nov. 8 – 9.) Other Pride celebrations include Bear Pride in Chicago on May 22-23, DC Black Pride (May 23-26,) Amsterdam’s Fetish Pride (May 29-June 1,) Harlem Pride (June 22 – 29,), Orlando Black Pride (June 3-9) and Los Angeles’ Black Pride at the Beach (July 4 – 6.)

You’ve Been Schooled

Amazingly, there are many people who don’t know their GLBT history, not surprising since GLBT history is seldom taught in school, here’s a brief primer about why we celebrate Pride in June. The people of Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village (New York City) were no strangers to police raids. Roughly once a month, fluorescent lights would flood the bar, warning the patrons inside of the impending procedures they were all too familiar with. Officers strutted through Stonewall, lining patrons against the walls and checking the identification of every man and woman inside. People with no identification were arrested. Men in women’s clothes were arrested. Anyone “touching inappropriately” and anyone the police deemed suspicious was arrested. Often the bar’s stock of alcohol was confiscated. But despite the regular police intimidation, bullying and public humiliation, Stonewall Inn was one of the most successful gay bars in New York City. Many of the bar’s patrons, angry at the harassment by police, fought back during a raid on June 28, 1969, and a riot broke out. As word spread throughout the city about the demonstration, the customers of the inn were soon joined by others who started throwing objects at the policemen, shouting “gay power.” Police reinforcements arrived and beat the crowd away, but the next night, the crowd returned, even larger than the night before. For hours more than 1,000 protesters rioted outside the Stonewall Inn. The police sent a riot-control squad to disperse the crowd. In the days following, demonstrations of varying intensity took place throughout the city, leading to the formation of the Gay Liberation Front, which was the first group to use the word “gay” in its name. On the 1st anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the first gay pride parades in U.S. history took place in Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and near the Stonewall Inn in New York. The Stonewall riots inspired people to organize in support of gay rights, and within two years after the riots, gay rights groups had been started in nearly every major city in the United States. The Stonewall riots, the event largely regarded as a catalyst for the LGBT movement for civil rights in the United States.

Award-Winning LGBT Artist Comes to Broward College oAs gay life in the United States rushes toward equality, the gay rights movement may refocus on the global landscape. Other countries treat their

LGBTQ population much worse than ours, including Staceyann Chin’s home country, Jamaica. Chin is a spoken-word poet, performing artist, and LGBT rights political activist. She often writes about the struggle of growing up gay in Jamaica (once, even on The Oprah Winfrey Show). Her work is witty, self-mocking, and (most of all) politically charged. Lana Del Rey oThe “self styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra” chanteuse Lana Del Rey has had considerable success at her young age. The single “Video Games” became an American phenomenon a mere three years ago. Since that time, Del Ray has sold over 5 million albums of Born to Die, her debut album (though unreleased earlier albums and recordings have since been leaked). Her hipster sensibility informs much of her film-noir inspired work. A new album, entitled Ultraviolence, is due out this year, but a release date has yet to be confirmed. On the album, Del Rey collaborates with gay music icon Rufus Wainwright. The first single, West Coast, has just recently been released. 5 Tips to Get Rid of Belly Fat by Tom

If you’re embarrassed by that muffin top or extra jiggle in your trunk, then here are some surefire fat loss tips that you can use right now! No pills, mechanical devices, or starvation diets needed, just a little common sense and old fashioned discipline can work wonders. First of all, know your enemy. Fast food equals junk food, and eating it will make you fat, period! Even if you pass on the super-size burgers, fries and shakes and go for seemingly healthier selections, you are only fooling yourself. A more than occasional trip to the vending machine at work can add up to beaucoup calories and an extra pound or two per week! Cross these enemies off your list and pack your arsenal of freshly home prepared snacks and lunches everyday! Secondly, read the labels when you food shop and check fat content. There are a whopping 9 calories in every gram of fat as opposed to 4 calories in each gram of carbs or protein. Total fat should never exceed 25 percent of total calories. And saturated fat should never make up more than one third of total fat or one tenth of total calories. Here’s another hint: never grocery shop when you’re hungry, your defenses will be more easily worn down by temptation. Thirdly, be a homebody. Clean out your cupboards, make your list of healthy foods and prepare those meals at home. You can never be sure how much fat, grease or other unhealthy stuff you’ll be eating even in the best restaurants. It’s also easier to control portion size at home and not be tempted by a sinful desert tray. Fourthly, schedule your meals. Never skip or scrimp on breakfast. Whole grains, fresh fruit, light dairy are all good sources to start your engine and keep it running efficiently all day long. Eating smaller meals more frequently – 5 or 6 per day – better fuels the body and reduces fat storage. This approach also bumps up your metabolism and gives your muscles a more steady supply of protein if you are working out. Sure, this takes effort and planning, but so does every worthwhile project in life. Finally, HALT before you act. From now on say, “HALT” before you eat. “H” stands for genuine hunger or habit. If you’re physically hungry, then eat. But often you eat out of habit – stop it now! The remaining letters refer to other wrong reasons
