Congratulations, Team Village Pub!

Dancing with the South Florida Stars Winners Tell All Text: Grant James Images: Dennis Dean

Before the Dancing with the South Florida Stars competition really kicked off, I asked team Village Pub’s Jerry Solano what his thoughts were going into this competition. “We just want to have fun really,” he told me. When I asked why his goal wasn’t to win (or to not mess up at least) he told me that him and his partner, Ashley Blake, were just going into it with an open mind, with the goal of having fun. He was being extremely genuine and honest. This wasn’t a facade. This was their actual mindset going into the competition. Fast forward to a few weeks later, and I’m standing with this year’s winning team: It’s team Village Pub, of course. The duo’s Salsa dance received great scores from the judges and the crowd ate it up. The cheers took a good chunk of time to die down each time Jerry and Ashley came out. I assumed early on in the night that they were going to take home the trophy for Village Pub (after they were introduced to a room of loud cheers), but I didn’t picture it to be so grandiose. When it came time for the audience applause segment of the evening, it was a done deal. A sweeping win. It’s worth noting that the two of them are entertaining, witty and extremely passionate. Whether it’s Ashley’s gigs at Rumors, Palace, Off The Hookah, Azucar, or Village Pub, or her firecracker personality, Mrs. Blake is lively, engaging, and just easy to talk to really. She even flies to

COVER Dancing with the South Florida Stars Winners Tell All DWTSFS continued from page 24 New Jersey at the end of each month to meet with clients as a stylist, which Blake says used to be a full-time job alone for her. Yes, Mrs. Blake. She married her partner of three and a half years, Diego Costa, roughly six months ago, in New York City. (They are eagerly waiting for the day same-sex marriage becomes legal in Florida.) The two have been happily living in Wilton Manors for the past year and four months. Jerry, originally from Costa Rica, has been a South Florida resident since 1991. He’s a wellknown bartender, as he’s practically always behind the bar at Village Pub (which he’s been at since its opening almost 2 years ago). In his space time, he enjoys...Salsa dancing! He absolutely loves it. “Ashley didn’t know how to do the Salsa, so I had to help a little,” Jerry confessed. “But she’s actually a very fast learner. She really delivered.” Jerry and Ashley said that they were “so very

thankful for their win for Village Pub,” but they were also quick to extend an enormous “thank you” to Danny Carter, a dance instructor from Dance Moves, for giving the team a crash course one-time lesson on the Salsa. They also thanked the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation for everything that they do for the community. “Above all else, it was for a good cause,” Ashley said. The foundation is a non-profit that aims to aid those with life-threatening illnesses, including HIV/ AIDS, by helping them stay fit via free gym memberships and healthy lifestyle workshops. “We had to do it for Brian Neal’s foundation,” Solano added. “There was no question. It’s so important to the community.” Thought they may be humble, the two are already looking forward to next year’s festivities, and to be honest, we can’t really blame them.

THE WEEK

Lady Gaga, Santana and the Las Olas Food & Wine Festival

____________________ Thursday

5/1

Bella Beware o Quirky, intelligent, and musically inclined— sounds like the perfect date. Thankfully, one member of hipster, college-radio friendly Vampire Weekend is actually openly gay. Rostam Batmanglij (keyboardist and producer) publicly declared his homosexuality a few years after the group hit it big. Formed at Columbia University in the early 2000s, Vampire Weekend gained critical acclaim with their self-titled hit and intellectually stimulating single Oxford Comma. In that song the members of the band bemoan the use of an Oxford comma (a comma used after a series of lists of three or more before the coordinating conjunction). According to them, the Oxford comma is pointless, stupid, and unnecessary. Still, certain esteemed, obnoxious, and narcissistic writers for local gay publications insist on using it. 8 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Food and Wine! oMany people stumble down Las Olas Blvd drunk and with full bellies. Tonight an event dedicated solely to such an activity takes place. The Las Olas guymag.net

Wine and Food Festival arrives with a revamped VIP Prive party, exciting new restaurants, and a variety of on-site events guaranteed to elevate the experience. Recognized as one of the most anticipated wine and culinary events of the year, the 19th Annual Las Olas Wine and Food Festival will have 45 tables of wine, spirits, and micro brews. A Bombay Sapphire Gin Lounge and Shellback Caribbean Rum hut will showcase the offerings of two of the main sponsors. All of the proceeds will benefit the American Lung Association in Florida. 7:30 p.m. Las Olas Wine and Food Festival. 600 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Carlos Santana oFusing Latin American sound and American rock, Carlos Santana received acclaim for his 1970s band Santana. The band’s sound featured his blues-based guitar lines set against Latin and African rhythms not generally heard in rock music. A newer generation might know him most famously from the ubiquitous and repetitive Grammy-award winning hit single Smooth (featuring Rob Thomas). This year he received a Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime contribution to American culture through the performing arts. Tonight he plays all of the hits. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314. THE WEEK continues on page 47 theguymag

Ghost

Murder and Music

oWhoopi Goldberg is taking over South Florida! With a recent stand-up routine, the musical Sister Act having already made the rounds, and now Ghost playing at the Broward Center, Whoopi Goldberg has been as present as an old deceased love, watching over our every move. Goldberg, of course, received her Academy Award for the film version of Ghost, playing a wacky psychic who Patrick Swayze’s character decides to haunt. The iconic film about love, grieving, and the afterlife is given the Broadway treatment with a musical featuring an original pop score from Grammywinners Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. Even if Whoopi herself won’t be on stage, she’ll be there in spirit. 8 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts 201 SW Fifth Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

oPsycho is remembered for its Freudian analysis, surprise twist beginning, famous shower scene, and its evocative musical score. That score was written by one of the great film composers of the 20th century—Bernard Hermann. The South Florida Symphony showcases Hermann’s music in their summer series Blue Door String Quartet. Along with Hermann’s Echoes, the program also features Janacek’s The Kreutzer Sonata and Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1. The evening starts with a complimentary reception at 7 p.m. catered by Lenore Nolan-Ryan Catering and Cooking School, followed by the performance at 7:30 p.m. Josephine S. Leiser Opera Center. 221 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

SewAPalooza: Once Upon a Quilt oGrandma, beware—it’s coming! The granddaddy (grandmommy) of all sewing spectaculars arrives in Davie as a Bernina dealer in Fort Lauderdale hosts SewAPalooza. Sewing enthusiasts will gather to sew, learn new techniques, and be inspired by sewing experts. Educators Betsy Carlson and Janine Babich will be on hand to discuss different sewing skills. The festival also includes kits, project supplies, use of Bernina sewing machines, lunch and refreshments throughout the day. Be prepared, Davie, things are about to get C-R-A-Z-Y! 9 a.m. Old Davie School Historical Museum. 6650 Griffin Rd, Davie, 33314.

Lady Gaga o Despite supposed lackluster sales for ArtPop, Lady Gaga is still the official gay icon of the new millennium. With so many “little monsters” adoring Gaga’s every move, the talented singer-songwriter has become a mastermind of publicity. From the meat dress, to the Kermitthe-Frog dress, to the Muppets Thanksgiving Spectacular, to the admitted coke addiction, Lady Gaga has grabbed headlines for each and every one of her antics. Songs like Born this Way and Bad Romance defined a generation of gay men and women fighting for their rights. Tonight she’ll perform and dance and produce an artistic celebration of her ego. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave, Sunrise, 33323.

oThe Seattle based indie folk-rock band creates music more television-friendly than radio-friendly. The song Rivers and Roads was featured on the series finale of Chuck and an episode of the now-defunct sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Other songs have been featured on Hart of Dixie and the British TV program Beaver Falls. Formed in the summer of 2009, The Head and the Heart contains members Josiah Johnson, Jonathan Russell, Charity Rose Thielen, Chris Zasche, Kenny Hensley, and Tyler Williams. The two albums they released will be on display tonight as they perform at The Fillmore. 8:30 p.m. The Filmore Miami Beach 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Beach Bear Weekend Meat & Greet oFort Lauderdale has been nervous for a couple months. No one parties harder, smarter, or more discerningly than the bears, and they’re coming to town for an entire weekend of events. The weekend begins at Village Pub for the aptly named Meat and Greet. This first official party of Beach Bear Weekend is a chance for the bears, cubs , otters, and all those who love them to party and discuss the current issues facing the subculture (according to the classic film Bear City 2: The Proposal, there’s a rivalry between muscle bears and “classic” bears). Discounts are included for those wearing their BeachBear ID tag. The proceeds from this event benefit The Pride Center. 6 p.m. Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. theguymag

TRAVEL

Why Provincetown? by

Rick Karlin

o

Why is Provincetown such a draw for GLBT vacationers? It certainly isn’t the most luxurious or colorful vacation spot and it’s not the easiest to get to. The last part of that statement may explain the town’s long history as a getaway spot for our community. This out of the waypoint allowed people to be themselves far from the prying eyes of society. As far back as the middle of the last century, Provincetown provided a safe and welcoming spot for homosexuals (although then they were referred to by the more circumspect term, “bohemians”).

Barely three miles from end to end, the former whaling village juts out like a fist into the Atlantic Ocean forming the cape in Cape Cod. Artists were first attracted by the unusual quality of the light caused by being surrounded by water. Tennessee Williams and his crowd were among those who adopted the place as their summer retreat. The people of the area, mostly immigrant fisherman had a “live and let live” policy towards the artsy folks and that acceptance and openness continues to this day. The town is bursting with architecturally pre-

guymagtube

served homes that look like they did when they were built in the 1800’s. It has a working fishing fleet that heads out most mornings to pull in fresh fish, oysters and lobsters that show up on the tables of the top notch restaurants each night. This tiny dot at the very end of Cape Cod, Massachusetts packs an awful lot into a small space for gay vacationers. From May through October theme weeks fill the calendar. Among some of the special events are Bear Week, Women’s Week, Mates Leather Weekend and, of course, Carnival. Days are usually spent pool-side at one of the numerous small resorts that populate the town, or on the beach for those staying in one of the hundreds of B&Bs. Nights are spent taking in the various shows, dining at restaurants that range from four star (The Pointe, 82 Bradford St.) to casual seafood shops (The Lobster Pot, 321 Commercial St.), to dives (Burger Queen, 331 Commercial St.) and hitting the clubs from the Tea Dance at The Boatslip (161 Commercial St.), to a quiet drink The Shipwreck Lounge in the Brass Key Guesthouse (67 Bradford St.) to down and dirty action at The Vault (247 Commercial) to the historic Atlantic House aka A-House, 4-6 Masonic Pl.) As the oldest, continuous art colony in the United States, it boasts dozens of galleries and venues for performers as diverse as flamboyant drag queens Varla Jean Merman and The Kinsey Sicks, lesbian stand up comics Lea Delaria and Kate Clinton, sing-along piano bars and Broadway stars, such as Megan Hilty and Audra McDonald performing and discussing their careers. No matter what the evening’s entertainment might be, everyone seems to end up at Spiritus Pizza (190 Commercial St.) after the bars close. If you’re planning a Provincetown trip, you might want to consult the calendar of events below. For a complete list, go to http://ptown.org/ yearly-events-calendar.

Floats, dancers, performers and many in the audience, dress the part of the annual theme (this year it’ss “Comic Book Capers.”) The parade is the main focus, but the next day’s drag queen brunch is also a must-see.

FITNESS

Don’t Forget the Cardio! by Tom

Bonanti

o

When it comes to having a great body most guys will do just about anything. Pumping iron seven days a week, buying expensive supplements, and even taking illegal drugs are not out of the question. But when it comes to cardiovascular (aerobic) training they’ll tack an extra 15 minutes on to the end of their work-out every now and then and they think that they’re doing the job. Let’s take another look at why you must do cardio. Not only will 20-60 minutes of cardio at least 2 times a week at 55-85% of your maximum heart rate (220 – your age) help you to get lean and stay lean, but it’s also damn good for you. Aerobic fitness, according to most doctors, is the most important component of physical fitness. When your muscles need oxygen, your aerobic (cardio vascular) system must be able to efficiently deliver it to them. When your body has waste products that need to be expelled (eg. carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes); your heart-lung complex must be up to the task. Aerobic fitness is the most effective way to burn fat. Engaging in aerobic exercise can burn up to one thousand calories an hour depending on the specific type and intensity of activity. As a result, individuals who want to reduce their body fat sensibly, instead of starving the weight off, have a positive, user-friendly option at their disposal. Doing regular cardio helps you to live longer! Research indicates that for every hour you spend exercising aerobically, you extend your life by two hours. Mentally and emotionally aerobic exercise can do wonders for you. Researchers show that individuals suffering from light to moderate depression, who engage in aerobic exercise 15-30 minutes at least every other day, typically experience a dramatic improvement in their condition. Mental sharpness, improved sleep patterns as well as an improved self image have also been reported. From a medical-physiological point of view, cardiovascular training can provide the only real fountain of youth and good health to the human body. Aerobic exercise aids in preventing certain types of cancer. Studies show that men and women who exercise are less likely to get colon cancer. Cardiovascular training reduces the risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association reports

52

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

that non-exercisers have twice the risk of developing heat disease and heart attacks than individuals who, walk, jog, kick box, or hit the treadmill regularly. In addition, aerobic exercise is one of the few voluntary activities that is effective in lowering your LDL (bad cholesterol) and raising the level of HDL (“good cholesterol”). Pump up your cardio, train with weights regularly, and adhere to a sound nutritional plan and you just might live forever-or almost! Stick with this 3 fold plan and you are going to look leaner, hotter and more muscular, for sure! Contact me at trainertomb@aol.com with all your questions. Check out my gym at www. pumpnincgym.com.
