BeachBear Weekend Text: Grant James Images: Dennis Dean
BeachBear Weekend is finally here. From May 7 - 12, 2014, bears will travel from near and far to soak up the sun and enjoy a weekend of fun with fellow furry friends. This year, the Pride Center at Equality Park of South Florida is acting as the event’s partner and benefactor. Remember to register and get your BeachBear ID Tag for weekendlong discounts! Whether you’re soaking up the sun or drinking in the fun, we hope that you have a safe and fun time! BeachBear Weekend 2014 is dedicated to John Fuller, 1970-2014: “A Life Well Lived.”
Thursday 5/8
Kick off your BeachBear party with a Bear Round-Up at Scandals on Thursday, May 8, starting at 8 p.m. The country western gay bar is known for its southern hospitality, helping to cater to the bear community whenever it can. (Scandals – 3073 NE 6th Ave, Wilton Manors, 33305.)
Friday 5/9
On Friday, the party moves to Club Fort Lauderdale for a party known simply as “Wet n’ Wild.” This private men’s club boasts a huge pool, outdoor whirlpool and showers, as well as a sauna, steam room and gym. Relax or get a little wild at this daytime event, beginning at noon. (Club Fort Lauderdale – 10 NW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33311.) After Club Fort Lauderdale, head to Bill’s Filling Station around 8 p.m. for the biggest bear party in the area. GROWL is a weekly party at Bill’s that targets bears and bear enthusiasts, so expect a packed room full of fur – some familiar, some new. Around 11 p.m., head to Ramrod for a more hardcore, leather vibe! (Bills – 2209 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305; Ramrod – 1508 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.) Hopefully, you saved your energy, because the after party is taking place at Slammer 321. Beginning at 1 a.m., bears will flock to this men’s private club, where you can BYOB and really let loose. (Slammer 321 – 321 W Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.)

Saturday 5/10
Starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, the official host hotel for the weekend, Courtyard Marriott Fort Lauderdale, will host a Tea Dance. This is your chance to relax poolside! This event is free to the public and features music by DJ Barry Huffine. (Courtyard Marriott – 440 Seabreeze Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33316.) You will have two choices for Saturday night, both beginning at 10 p.m: Bill’s DILF Party, or Hunters Nightclub’s Bear Hunt. (We won’t get into specifics for what a DILF is, but have you ever heard the term MILF?) The DILF: Bear Edition party will feature sounds from DJ Herbie James, while Hunters Nightclub is taking more of a “club” route. The official event description says Hunters is the place to hunt or be hunted, so “Shirts off, and get on the dance floor.” Whichever route you choose, remember that the migration time for the after party at 321 Slammer is 1 a.m. (Hunters – 2232 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.)
Sunday 5/11
Your Sunday is meant to be somewhat lazy, so thankfully Sunday’s events don’t begin until 5 p.m. at Hunters. Hairy, masculine GoGo dancers will be dancing all evening for your pleasure, so make sure to bring those singles. Afterward, head to Scandals for a Western-themed night of fun, starting at 9 p.m. Sammer 321 will host another after hours event starting at 1 a.m. as well.
Monday 5/12
Though the weekend is over, Monday is being considered a “recovery” day. Whether it’s hair of the dog or you just want somewhere to hang, Rumors is hosting a Recovery Party at 5 p.m. with 2-4-1 cocktails. After, head to the official closing party, Big bear Bash, at Ramrod starting at 10 p.m. If you have it in you, take advantage of the last night of your stay by heading to the last Slammer 321 after party at 1 a.m. (Rumors – 2246 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.)

Patti Lupone, Mother’s Day at Lips & Men’s Life Drawing
____________________ Thursday

Becoming Dr. Ruth o Dr. Ruth Westhelmer is most famous for doling out advice to concerned, sexually frustrated couples. Her life story revolves around much more than just her profession, though. In “Becoming Dr. Ruth,” TV star Debra Jo Rupp (That 70’s Show) becomes Karola Ruth Siegel and tells the story of her complicated and action-packed life: from surviving the Holocaust to joining the Israeli Haganah as a sniper, to receiving her doctorate and becoming a household name as America’s favorite sex therapist. Straight from its critically acclaimed, New York run, “Becoming Dr. Ruth” plays tonight in Fort Lauderdale. 8 p.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Patti Lupone Wanted! oPatti Lupone—theatrical stage legend and recent Fort Lauderdale performer—has been the subject of
many gay musical theater enthusiasts for a number of years. While Lupone embodies a diva-esque personality, she houses the voice and talent to back it up. Once during her much-heralded performance of Mama Rose in “Gypsy,” Lupone lashed out against the audience because they kept taking pictures of her. Because of all this hilarious drama, actors like Ben Rimalower adore Patti Lupone. Tonight, Mr. Rimalower performs his one-man show, “Patti Issues,” in which a young gay boy finds solace from his family turmoil in the transformative voice of Patti Lupone. The much-heralded play makes its debut in South Florida this weekend. 8 p.m. The Cabaret South Beach. 233 12th St, Miami Beach, 33139.
The Wanted oBritish boy band group The Wanted is cute, Disney-ready, and a tween girl’s favorite pop group. They had a mild hit two years ago with the radiofriendly Glad You Came. Recent hits include We Own the Night, All Time Low, and Gold Forever. They’ve been nominated for a multitude of Teen Choice Awards yet have come up empty-handed each time. Rob Schneider oSome may call him the poor man’s Adam Sandler, and there’s certainly a lot of evidence to support that claim (the films The Animal and Deuce Bigalow are mostly known for their plethora of Golden Raspberry Award nominations). Even so, Rob Schneider is a popular, stalwart entertainer. When not fighting with film critics (like the late Roger Ebert), Schneider spends his time performing standup, driving environmentally friendly cars, and outspokenly advocating against vaccination practices. Tonight, he entertains a South Floridian audience in West Palm Beach. 8 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, 33401.
Thais oAncient Egypt is the setting for this classic opera. In “Thais,” a beautiful and seductive courtesan is pitted against a virtuous and pious monk. Thanael, a Cenobite monk, tries to convert Thais to Christianity, but discovers too late that his obsession is rooted in lust. Jules Massenet’s masterpiece is described often as having a sort of religious eroticism. It includes the famous aria “Dis-moi-que je suis belle” and the moving orchestral “Meditation.” 7 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami Beach, 33132.

Beach Bear Weekend Closing Time oBeach Bear Weekend has been nuts, hasn’t it? So many incredible parties, there almost wasn’t enough time to fully recover before going back home. Thankfully, Rumors offers a Recovery Party at 5:00 PM. 2-4-1 cocktails and other discounts are offered all night long for guests showing their BeachBear ID Tag. Later a BigBear Bash at Ramrod and a closing party at 3-2-1 closes the weekend party. Thank you, one and all, for such an incredible weekend. 5 p.m. Rumors. 2246 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Electric Trash oSteve Trash takes the concept Going Green to a whole new level. Presented as part of the Broward Center Smart Stage Matinee Series, rockin’ “eco hero” Steve Trash will perform his signature world-class green illusions. Sponsored by Florida Power and Light, this show features an amazing mix of rockin’ music, astounding green magic tricks and hilarious eco-education guaranteed to make audiences laugh until their tummies hurt. In addition to being an award-winning performer, Trash is a dedicated activist and an active member of many environmental non-profit organizations, including the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Recycling Coalition. 10 a.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Mother’s Day at Lips o This Mother’s Day, Lips offers something any accepting mother of a homosexual would enjoy— brunch and dinner with the DIVAS! For the dinner, Mom enjoys a complimentary glass of wine. If choosing brunch, deals on unlimited mimosas, champagne, and bloody marys will surely satiate a mother’s early morning quench for alcohol. While enjoying these delicious meals, a bevy of drag queens entertain with raunchy and pitch perfect imitations of everyone’s favorite gay icons. From Bette to Barbara, the show’s outpouring of love and cattiness never stops! 11 a.m. & 7 p.m. Lips. 1421 Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33334.

oIt may have been a cheesy signal of romantic tension in the film “Titanic,” but drawing a nude model does have its appeal. For one, the artist is able to stare at a nude form for lengthy periods of time. For another, it’s interesting watching the model maintain said nude pose. Getting in touch with your artistic side isn’t all that bad either. All experience levels are welcomed at the Men’s Life Drawing classes, but remember to bring art supplies for both drawing and painting (including charcoal, pencil, or watercolor). Guest artists from the community will also be in attendance at this monthly event. 7 p.m. Push Fitness. 1098 NE 45th St, Oakland Park, 33334.

TRAVEL
Chicago: Your Kind of Town by
Rick Karlin
o
“City of Big Shoulders”, “Hog Butcher to the World”, “The Windy City” and “Second City” and the less charitable “Mistake by the Lake.” Chicago has more aliases than Sean “Puffy” “Puff Daddy” Combs. Some it deserves; it was the second largest city in America at one time. Some are dated (it’s no longer the meatpacking empire it once was) and some are right for the wrong reasons (Windy City refers to its long-winded politicians, not the climate, although it can be very cold and breezy). For five months of the year it is barely tolerable unless you have Nordic or Eskimo blood in your veins. For three months of the year the weather is unpredictable, it can be sunny and warm, then drop 50 degrees in a matter of hours. But, for four months of the year, it is a glorious place to be. Even then, the summer weather can vary from the balmy 80s to blisteringly hot 100º plus days, but for the most part the weather is lovely from late June through September. Chicagoans take advantage of the lovely weather and spectacular lakefront during that time and there’s no reason you shouldn’t do so as well. Every weekend there are nearly a dozen festivals from which to choose. Lakefront parks and beaches are spotlessly clean, free and run nearly the entire length of the city. There are dining and cultural options too numerous to count. If you’re into music there are the world-renowned music fests; Lollapalooza
48
guymag.net
theguymag
theguymag
(Aug. 1-3), Pitchfork (July 18-20), Wavefront (July 5-7), Bluesfest (June 13-15), Jazzfest (Aug. 28-31), Square Roots folk Music Fest (July 11-13), African/ Caribbean International Festival (July 3-6) and Taste of Chicago (July 9-13) which combines the best food in Chicago with top music acts. Among some of the other neighborhood festivals worth checking out are; the 30th annual Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival and Printers Row Lit Fest (both June 7 -8), the 40th annual Wells Street Art Festival (June 14-15), Gospel Music Festival (June 27-29), Craft Beer Festival (July 19-20), Chinatown Summer Fair (July 20), Fiesta del Sol (July 31-Aug. 3), FestaItaliana (Aug. 14-17), Remix Chicago: Chicago’s recycled art fair (Aug. 30-31), Chicago Gourmet (Sept. 26-28) and, of course, Pride Fest (June 21-22) and the Pride Parade (June 29.) For a complete list of weekly festivals, head over to choosechicago.com. For culture vultures you couldn’t pick a better year to visit Chicago as a number of cultural organizations are celebrating significant anniversaries. It’s the 80th season of Grant Park Music Festival, the 60th anniversary of the Lyric Opera, Second City’s 55th anniversary and the 125th anniversary of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. For sports fans, Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs, is celebrating its centennial, so its annual GLBT day, “Out at Wrigley” on July 12 will be especially significant. BTW, the Chicago Cubs is the only professional sports team owned by an openly
guymagtube
GLBT person. Wrigley Field is only steps away from Northalsted, also known as Boystown, which was recently named “the best gay neighborhood in the world” by Out Traveler Magazine. A collection of fabulous shops, delectable restaurants and famous nightlife (30 bars and clubs in less than one mile stretch!), NortHalsted is also home to The Legacy Project, the world’s only outdoor walking GLBT museum. The biggest party of the year is Market Days (Aug. 9-10), when the ultra-gay fest welcomes millions of people (that’s not an exaggeration!) to the hood. Chicago’s other predominantly GLBT neighborhood, the formerly primarily Swedish enclave of Andersonville, is just a few miles to the north and kicks off the summer festival season with its Midsommarfest (June 6-8). If Lakeview’s NortHalsted region is Boystown, then Andersonville could rightly be called “Man-dersonville” or “Womandersonville” as it is popular with more established male and lesbian couples. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that means it’s quiet and sedate. Andersonville which borders Uptown and Edgewater, the tres gay lakefront neighborhoods where the
guymag.net
majority of Chicago GLBT community choose to live, is just vibrant as Boystown. Uptown is a little grittier and more urban and its primary festival, Windy City RibFest (July 4-6) draws a mixed crowd. Edgewater’s big celebration is Edgefest (Aug. 2-3) and, of course, every weekend is a party at the predominantly gay Osterman Beach (aka Hollywood Beach) right across from the historic Edgewater Beach Apartments. Round trip airfares to Chicago from Fort Lauderdale can usually be found for less than $300. Chicago has no shortage of four and five star hotels, but if you prefer to stay “in the ‘hood,” consider Villa Toscana - a Victorian B&B, the Best Western Hawthorne Terrace, City Suites Hotel, the Majestic Hotel and the Days Inn on Diversey Ave., all located in or near Boystown. The Ashland Arms is a leather guest house and Magnolia Studios is a B&B, both located in Edgewater. For those on a strict budget, the Chicago Getaway Hostel, is in Boystown-adjacent (and very safe,) Lincoln Park. For more information on lodging, cultural attractions and GLBT events throughout Chicago’s summer and early fall, check out www.choosechicago.com/articles/view/LGBT-Chicago/949

FITNESS
Get Psyched: Work Out Harder! by Tom
Bonanti
o
Summer is right around the corner. Hot weather, vacation time, Pride events, bathing suit season, are all reasons for most guys to hit the gym harder and longer. Yet in spite of all these stimulating factors, many still find motivation to work out tough. So here are a few of my simple, science backed kick-starters that are sure to make you really want to work out and actually enjoy your time in the gym. 1. Have a plan. Sure, you may be overwhelmed by work and other obligations. Don’t let these intrude on your workouts. Go to the gym with a routine in mind and stick to it. If legs are your least favorite muscle group, then work them on Monday. Split up your routine and stick to a plan of warming up, stretching, weight training and cardio. Routine breeds constancy. 2. Be Positive. When you need extra strength motivation, leave, “I feel awesome when I work out!” notes on your computer screen or mirror. Post pictures of hot bodies (dudes you’d like to look like) on the fridge so that you don’t give in to reckless binge eating. Make going to the gym fun and positive. A good trainer or workout partner can often provide extra challenges. Telling yourself, “I should go to the gym!” makes you not want to go. 3. Make a java run. Fruit smoothies and supercharged energy drinks may be refreshing, but they’re full of extra sugar that you really don’t need. If you require a pick-me-up, go with coffee – it has super powers! A jolt of caffeine will keep
50
guymag.net
theguymag
theguymag
you on the treadmill longer and help you pump iron harder than any other so-called super drink. 4. Limit the Social Media. Browsing evidence of your stellar life on FB or chatting up a new connection on Grindr are all a part of everyday life for most guys. Deep six these tendencies when you work out and focus only on pumping, sweating, counting reps and keeping perfect form. Remember why you’re here in the gym. Don’t give into distractions that are sure to diminish your workouts! 5. Music is crucial. Customize a playlist and create a mix that matches your workout activity. Try fast-paced tunes for running, chill for Yoga and stretching, something pounding and sexy for weight training. The right music will make these activities more effective and get you more excited just to be there! 6. Reward yourself. Buying a new bathing suit or treating yourself to a mani-pedi after a workout could inspire you to work out harder and longer. Plus, if you reward yourself after performing a task, you will actually perform the task more efficiently and have fun while you’re doing it. Working out at any age and level can be fun and life changing, plus, it is the only real fountain of youth that we have. Don’t miss out on any of the benefits. Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com with questions. Call Tom (954-557-1119) today and set up a free intake. www.pumpnincgym.com.
