LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER
I
am thrilled to be able to announce the appointment of award-winning writer Richard Hack to the position of Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Florida Agenda as well as editor-in-chief at Guy Magazine. I have known Richard for nearly a decade, and for much of that time, he has been a consultant to Multimedia Platforms LLC as well as a close personal friend. As the company embarks on our most aggressive growth effort since our founding in 2007, Richard will be a beacon to position the Agenda as the LGBT content leader and newspaper of choice, staying ahead of the news and analyzing its potential impact on the LGBT community. There will be a complete redesign of the newspaper, which is published weekly on a Thursday. Richard has written 17 books, three miniseries, and over two-dozen audio recordings including the New York Times bestselling “Hughes: The Private Diaries, Memos and Letters” which was used as the basis of the film “The Aviator.” His later book, “Puppetmaster: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover” was translated on the big screen as “J. Edgar” starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. He has written about the rich and notorious in numerous other biographies including “Duchess of Death: The Unauthorized Biography of Agatha Christie” and the Michael Jackson story “Jackson Family Values.” Richard served as the West Coast Programming Editor of TV Guide at a time when it was the largest magazine in the world (with 40 million readers and 50 separate local editions per week). Later, he served as the TV Editor for the Hollywood Reporter daily trade paper, producing 3,000 columns syndicated to over 600 newspapers across the country. He has appeared on over 200 television programs and series including “Oprah Winfrey,” “Larry King Live,” “60 Minutes,” “48 Hours,” “Good Morning America,” “Today Show,” “Tonight Show,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Inside Edition” and “Charlie Rose” among others. “I am delighted to help guide a team of incredibly dedicated and supportive writers, photographers, designers and sales people who all share our single vision,” Richard said. “Bobby Blair, Kevin Hopper, and their supporting staff have given me a gift. Beginning today, both the Agenda and Guy Magazine will be on the forefront of LGBT politics, entertainment, social media, and opinion--seamlessly merging Internet content (with its instant availability) with the guymag.net

sensibilities of print (with its permanency and archive potential). I look forward to meeting our readers personally at Wednesday evening’s Mix at Sidelines Sports Bar from 6:30-8:30.” As part of our restructuring, we will be moving our corporate headquarters to new offices, providing the largest production, layout and sales space of any Florida LGBT media company. With the current buying power of adult LGBT individuals projected to reach $800 billion in 2014, Multimedia Platforms and its associated publications and social media sites are posed to take the leadership position in supporting our community with socially relevant entertainment choices, and political analysis and explanation, while our travel guides, film reviews, and fashion layouts will renew the creative posture of our readership. My vision over the years has always been to create a media company that could offer our readers and advertisers every component available in the marketplace from newspapers, magazines, websites, social media outlets, etc. I am proud to say we are reaching our goals. Rediscover the new Agenda, Guy Magazine, and their associated web platforms as we move into an exciting tomorrow. theguymag

THE WEEK
Writers Write, Lovers Quarrel, and Chefs Steal the Show ____________________ Thursday
5/29
Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story oBefore Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy, there was Leopold and Loeb. In the 1920s, University of Chicago law students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb met, became lovers, and then decided to commit the “perfect crime.” Influenced by Nietzsche’s Ubermenschen philosophy (suggesting that superior men, “supermen,” could rise above the laws bounding average men), Leopold and Loeb kidnapped and killed 14-year-old Robert Franks. After a sensational murder trial, both men were found guilty yet spared a death sentence. Numerous film and stage adaptations have depicted the two men’s relationship, including Hitchcock’s “Rope” and cult classic, gay indie film “Swoon.” “Thrill Me¬: The Leopold and Loeb Story” focuses on the obsessive relationship between the two men. Outre Theatre Company closes its season with this evocative musical. 8 p.m. Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center. 201 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 33432.
Mayhem is a 10-week competition dedicated to finding Fort Lauderdale’s next great gay model. 10 finalists will be chosen to compete for the grand prize: a one-year modeling contract. The winner will not only be Sidelines’ ad model but will also receive a professional photo shoot, the cover of Guy Magazine, and over $3500 in cash and prizes. Wildchild World’s innovative “fantasy sideshows” include hundreds of performers, elaborate staging, and over-the-top costuming. At prior events like Ultra and Electric Daisy, Wildchild World gained recognition as one of the premiere production companies in South Florida. They have been written about in national magazines like Time, Huffington Post, and Life. Model Mayhem oModeling is still considered one of the greatest pursuits for a young gay male. What could be more flattering than being honored for your beauty? Model Mayhem, Sidelines’ competition to find the next great model, understands this priority. Model guymag.net
Morrissey oThe hipster king, Morrissey, has maintained his popularity for over 30 years, through many different changes in the music world’s landscape. He is also a major icon for the GLBTQIA community. Although Morrissey considers himself “humasexual” (or, attracted to humans, not gender), he has dated men in the past, including photographer Jake Walters. Hits from his stint as the lead vocalist for The Smiths include “This Charming Man” and “William, It Was Really Nothing.” His success continued as a solo artist with songs like “You’re the One for Me, Fatty” and “Suedehead.” Tonight he performs the greatest hits from his 30-year career with special guest Kristeen Young. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, 33132.

THE WEEK Doubt oJohn Patrick Stanley’s famous 2004 play won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. With a plot focused on a draconian nun (played by Meryl Streep in the film version) and a possibly pedophilic priest, “Doubt” explores themes of the importance of uncertainty and the Catholic Church’s sex abuse controversy. At fictionalized St. Nicholas Church School, a rigidly conservative nun named Sister Aloysius conflicts with the beloved and progressive parish priest, Father Flynn. She accuses him of sexual misconduct with the school’s first African-American student. A subsequent investigation suggests both Father Flynn’s guilt and innocence. 2 p.m. Delray Beach Playhouse. 950 Lake Shore Dr. Delray Beach, 33444.

DINING
Scarfone’s Coal Fired Pizza by
Richard David Chamberlain
o
Scarfone’s Coal Fired Pizza has finally opened on the ground floor of The Gables at Wilton Park. We say “finally” because the Italian restaurant has been being built-out within the apartment and town house complex for just under a year--an eternity for pizza fans that can barely wait out the silence between text messages these days. Well, the place opened last Tuesday to much fanfare and a packed house, with the resulting buzz reaching beehive proportions. The centerpiece of the full-service restaurant is its large coal fired oven, which is fully exposed to diners along with its open kitchen and prep station. With wood logs stacked teepee style, blazing atop the red-hot coals, it commands attention and sets a warm atmosphere that can be found nowhere else on the Drive. The restaurant features upscale Italian dining— both inside and out—with light jazz music setting the tone for a delightful eating experience. Despite the restaurant’s name, there is much more to Scarfone’s than pizza, although both samples of Signature Pizzas we tried—The Feast ($17) with thin crust topped by freshly made mozzarella, imported San Marzano plum tomato sauce, Romano cheese, extra virgin olive oil and Italian sausage, meatball, pepperoni and ham; and The Sicilian Barbeque the 900-degree oven to perfection, these wings ($17) with diced breaded chicken, ham, roasted are available in specialty flavors including tradired pepper, and red onions in a Sicilian-styled tional hot, sweet chili, teriyaki, Sicilian barbecue, sweet honey barbeque sauce—were incredible, and honey garlic—and all served with caramelized and put all other local pizzas to shame. onions. FILM
Screen Savor: X Rated by
Gregg Shapiro
“The Normal Heart” (HBO Films) premiered on May 25
o
First the bad news: “X-Men Days of Future Past” (20th Century Fox/Marvel) is yet another example of the unnecessary overuse of 3-D. The few scenes in which it is best utilized would probably be as effective in 2-D. Also, newly-out actress Ellen Page is completely wasted as Kitty Pryde, whose powers of intangibility extend to assisting others to travel through time. It’s too bad she can’t travel back in time to tell the screenwriters what a corny idea that is and ask them to better explain the morphing of her abilities. Here’s how the time travel in “X-Men Days of Future Past” (get it?) works: in the not too distant future, an army of indestructible sentinels, invented by mad government scientist Trask (Peter Dinklage), whose sole function is to hunt down and obliterate mutants, is getting closer to achieving its goal. In a last ditch effort to prevent that from happening Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman with his obligatory bare chest and ass) is sent back to the 1970s to prevent the reprobate Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) from assassinating Trask, thereby rewriting history, especially for the hunted and misunderstood mutants. The time travel element allows both the present/ future version of Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Erik/Magneto (out actor Sir Ian MacKellan) to appear on-screen together, finally putting their long-standing differences aside. It also permits new and expanded insight into what went wrong in their relationship, in the early 1970s. Logan/ Wolverine, the only one built tough enough to withstand the potential dangers of such time travel is sent back to 1973 where he first convinces the young, damaged and defeated younger Xavier (James MacAvoy) of the purpose of his quest. Joined by Xavier’s mentee and personal caretaker Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult), they set out to free an imprisoned youthful Erik/Magneto (Michael Fassbender), who has been found guilty of assassinating JFK (don’t ask!). In the movie’s best scenes, the ones that combine dazzling special effects and brilliant humor, the velocity skills of Peter/Quicksilver (Evan Peters) are enlisted to assist in Erik/Magneto’s Pentagon

prison break. This section alone makes it worthwhile to sit through the more than two hours of seat rattling bombast. What follows is a series of exotic locales, from China to Vietnam to Paris, as well as a considerable amount of time spent in Washington DC and environs, and a race against time to stop the shape-shifting and determined Raven/Mystique from carrying out her mission. Certainly not the worst installment in the series, it’s far from the best (that honor goes to the very queer “X-Men 2”). Nevertheless, from the perspective of this non-comic book geek, it’s a satisfying serving of early summer entertainment. A long time in the making (no thanks to Barbra Streisand), the movie adaptation of Larry Kramer’s difficult and devastating “The Normal Heart” (HBO Films) finally premiered on May 25. It’s a fitting debut for Memorial Day Weekend as there are so many friends, family and loved ones who must not be forgotten. “The Normal Heart” opens in 1981 with the arrival, at the dock, of the boat to Fire Island Pines. Passenger Ned (Mark Ruffalo), a semi-autobiographical character created by Kramer for the play and screenplay, is a writer (of course) who has pissed off more than a few of Fire Island’s regulars for his views on promiscuity, including those he published in a book. Ned, a keen observer of his fellow gay men, remains aloof, although he makes a good effort to partake when necessary. The birthday celebration for Craig (Jonathan Groff), lover of closeted ex-marine/current financial guy Bruce (Taylor Kitsch, who is hereby forgiven for all of his past bad acting choices), is one example. But the festive atmosphere will be short-lived. Beginning with the touchstone of the New York Times article about a rare cancer in homosexuals, guymagtube
“The Normal Heart” beats hard, loud, fast and erratically. Sanford, a shop owner who recognizes Ned at the doctor’s office, has KS lesions. Dr. Brookner (Julia Roberts) has seen several patients like Sanford, as she tells Ned, but isn’t getting the response she needs from gay organizations. Brookner enlists Ned, and his notorious big mouth, to get the word out about the possible connection between the cancer and sex. Then things really begin to escalate. Craig dies. Ned organizes a meeting with Brookner and members of the community. When it goes badly, Ned “welcomes” Brookner to “gay politics.” The one high point in Ned’s life is a meeting with New York Times writer Felix (Matt Bomer). Although Ned considers himself to be out of Felix’s league, a romance develops. But this bright light is overshadowed by the increasing number of deaths, the mistreatment of GRID (gay related immune deficiency, an early moniker for AIDS) patients in hospitals, the lack of government funding and the closeted mayor’s dismissal of the crisis. The 1982 official formation of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, with Bruce as president is a turning point. Executive director Tommy (a brilliant Jim Parsons) becomes the voice of reason (and much needed humor) during some of the film’s most heated moments. Shortly after the organization holds a successful fundraiser, Ned asks Felix,
guymag.net
clearly a stabilizing influence in his life, to move in with him. But Ned’s short fuse and sharp tongue continues to get him, and, by extension, the organization into trouble. Making matters worse, Felix discovers a KS lesion on his foot. If you haven’t already cried a few times at this point during the movie, check your pulse and be sure to have a box of tissues nearby. As a director, Ryan Murphy is no, say, Mike Nichols. However, he holds his own, even pulling some of his own trademark visual tricks out of his hat. He also gets exceptional performances out of Roberts, whose “holy terror” Brookner is confined to a wheelchair due to a childhood polio infection. Joe Mantello, as Ned’s friend Micky, as well as the aforementioned Kitsch, Bomer, Parsons, and of course, Ruffalo also deliver career-high performances. To his credit, Murphy also doesn’t shy away from the sex, some of which is depicted graphically, a necessary component of the story. As with HBO’s award-winning adaptation of Tony Kushner’s “Angels In America” (directed by Nichols), “The Normal Heart” is finding its audience not in movie theaters, but in people’s homes. In some ways, that’s probably preferable as “The Normal Heart” is a not-a-dry-eye-in-the-house production. What queen wants to be seen leaving a movie theater with bloodshot eyes, tear-stained cheeks and a runny nose anyway?

Here are a few of my top summer fitness tips. They are simple and easy to follow, so heed my advice and enjoy yourselves. 1. Remember that stretching is a vital component of overall fitness. Stretch vigorously and for several minutes before doing any cardio routine like cycling, running and swimming. For weight training, stretch lightly before working out, and more between sets and after your workout. 2. A cocktail or glass of wine are a delight around the pool or cabana, but overdoing it can pack on the pounds, deplete your energy and prove fatal to your workouts. Is that second Long Island Iced Tea really worth it? 3. Modalities like hydro-therapy, massage, and acupuncture, etc. can aid your fitness lifestyle by relieving pain, speeding recovery and adding to your overall well being. Treat yourself this summer! 4. Music can rev you up and motivate your work-outs – if your gym is playing tired tunes, then bring your own. 5. Guys sweat more in the summer. Carry a clean towel with you to the gym and a few antibacterial wipes so that you can keep equipment clean for yourself and others. 6. Stay hydrated throughout the day and during your work-outs. Chug water regularly and don’t wait until you are thirsty. Sports drinks for the most part contain too much sugar…good old H2O

is tops. 7. Beginning at age 25 most people begin to lose about a half a pound of muscle per year. Regular and progressive weight training helps maintain and build lean muscle. Why not beef up your weight training this summer? If you’ve never worked out, take some time and learn this summer. 8. Have a few extra pounds you want to shed quickly? To jump start your fat-burning, try 20 minutes of cardio, i.e. treadmill, elliptical on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. But make sure to eat breakfast soon after this and always before your major workout. 9. Good nutrition, weight training (free weights and machines) and cardio-vascular training (running, swimming, cycling) are the three elements of any sound program. You need to have all of these to succeed and look fabulous. This summer try reading more to improve your nutritional knowledge. Try a new workout regime. Get out and run, cycle or swim, etc. 10. The warmer weather is better for joints and muscles while exercising, so go for it! Just don’t overdo it, use sunscreen and chug water. And let me repeat this, always remember the importance of stretching and warming up. Enjoy your summer and stay fit and happy! Use down time to get an extra pump in the gym!
