THE WEEK
Summerland, Zombies and a Bargain Lunch

Counting Crows and Toad the Wet Sprocket oWho can forget the ubiquitous 1990’s smash hit “Mr. Jones?” That hit song thrust both The Counting Crows and their album August and Everything After into superstardom. Follow-up hits included a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Hanginaround.” The band, led by vocalist Adam Duritz, performs at the Hard Rock, promoting their new album, scheduled to be released in the fall. Performing alongside Counting Crows is another 1990s alternative-rock hit band, Toad the Wet Sprocket. It’s been almost 25 years since Toad the Wet Sprocket received fame for the hit songs “Walk on the Ocean,” and “All I Want.” Tonight the 1990s are back at the Hard Rock. 7:30 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest oThe Dale Wasserman-written hit play based on the novel by Ken Kesey has been extended at the Andrews Living Arts Studio through Sunday, June 15. Join the crowd. Andrews Living Arts Studio. 23 NW 5th St. Fort Lauderdale 33301. (954) 530-1879

Summerland 2014 oIf Counting Crows wasn’t enough 1990s nostalgia, the 3rd annual 90s alternative music tour Summerland 2014 may fulfill that craving. With bands like Everclear, Soul Asylum, Eve 6, and Spacehog, Summerland promises to be one of the best concert tours of the summer. “Rolling Stone” magazine named it one of the “10 Hottest Summer Package Tours” in 2012. Catchy singles like “Runaway Train,” “Father of Mine,” “Santa Monica,” and “Think Twice” will all be performed at this classic throwback band tour. 7 p.m. Pompano Beach Amphitheater. 1806 NE Sixth St. Pompano Beach. 33060.
The Pride oVarying degrees of repression and acceptance are viewed in both the past and the present in Alexi Kaye Campbell’s play “Pride.” In the 1950s, Philip is a real estate agent married to Sylvia but guiltily attracted to Oliver, the writer whose books his wife is illustrating. In the present, the names stay the guymag.net
same but the plot is different. The modern Oliver is a freelance journalist in danger of wrecking his relationship with Philip through his addiction to anonymous sex, constantly turning to his friend Sylvia for support. The play is directed by Andy Rogow and features Bruce Linser, Michael McKeever, Faiza Cherie, and Sean Dorazio. 8 p.m. Empire Stae. 1140 N. Flagler Dr. Ft. Lauderdale. 33305.

Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus: Ticket to Paradise oThe well-reviewed and innovative Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus performs their newest spectacle, “Ticket to Paradise.” In this new show, The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus takes the audience on a musical tour of great destinations. Songs will explore such stalwart cities as New York, San Francisco, Miami, and Chicago. “Ticket to Paradise” closes out this successful season at the Museum of Art. 8 p.m. Museum of Art. 1 East Las Olas Blvd. Ft. Lauderdale. 33301.
The Walking Dad: An Improvised Zombie Musical oThe intriguing idea here is to craft an entertaining zombie musical that is entirely improvised. Cheap Trills, South Florida’s only Musical Improv Troupe, will perform a whole show without a script. Not only that, but the members must make up songs on point, accompanied by a live musician. Also invented on the spot: musical dance numbers. With a theme about zombies and, of course, probable audience participation, this is either an ingenuous idea or a disaster waiting to happen. Either way, it should be worth a gander. 9 p.m. Just the Funny Theater. 3119 Coral Way. Coral Gables. 33145.

against some of the worst moral catastrophes of our time. Whether it was the brilliant art popping up post Vietnam or the 9-11 memorial art, tragedy strikes a chord with artists everywhere. ArtServe’s new gallery exhibit shows how artists fight against hate, fighting for social causes. SCREEN SAVOR
Stars in Our Eyes by
Gregg Shapiro
o
It’s hard to find fault with John Boone’s big screen adaptation of John Green’s Y/A novel masterwork “The Fault In Our Stars” (Fox 2000). As faithful as a two hour movie can be to the near-epic tome on which it is based, “The Fault In Our Stars” is a luminous cinematic tragedy, falling somewhere between Love Story and Terms of Endearment. Like the book, the movie version eases us into the looming trauma with humor. It’s an effective device in putting the viewer at ease while introducing us to the characters. Main character/ narrator Hazel (Shailene Woodley) attends a

cancer support group, oxygen tank in tow, at the urging of her concerned and caring parents Frannie (Laura Dern) and Michael (Sam Trammell), who think she’s depressed. Their nudging pays off because Hazel meets the charismatic Augustus (Ansel Elgort), who lost half a leg to osteosarcoma, and her life is forever altered. Getting better acquainted via texts (presented animatedly on screen), through the books they share, and the movies they watch, Hazel and Augustus fall in love before our eyes. Before you can say “make a wish,” the pair is bound for Amsterdam where they hope to get answers from
guymagtube
reclusive writer Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe) about some of the mysteries surrounding his one and only book. This is the proverbial beginning of the end. After sharing a romantic dinner and a night of intimacy, the trip reaches near-catastrophic levels on a few occasions. Once back home in Indiana, things take a sharp turn for the worse and the waterworks begin. If you are prepared for what follows then you will be better able to appreciate the film as a whole, including the breathtaking performances. Woodley has already proven herself to be a rising star, on par with Jennifer Lawrence, in films ranging from “The Descendants to Divergent.” But the real star of the show--especially judging by the squeals, swoons and sighs of the tween/teen girls and gay guys in the audience at the screening--and rightfully so, is Elgort. This is a breakout performance comparable to Brad Pitt in “Thelma and Louise.” You never doubt his character for a second and his performance, as well as Woodley’s, is Oscar caliber. As Lifetime Network biopics go, “House of Versace” (Lifetime/Lionsgate) towers, like a leggy supermodel, over “Liz & Dick.” Gina Gershon was born to play platinum fashion amazon Donatella Versace, straddling the line between characterization and caricature. The same can be said for Enrico Colantoni as the Gianni Versace. Based on Deborah Ball’s book of the same name, “House of Versace” dramatizes the tempestuous but undeniably successful working relationship that existed in the Versace family. “Clever little snake” Donatella (Gershon) has a knack for lining up celebrities to wear her brother’s couture designs. She loves the nightlife and isn’t shy about whipping out her nose candy dispenser and indulging. Gianni (Colantoni) is the opposite; a workaholic who prefers being a homebody, snuggling in his pajamas with boyfriend Antonio (Stefano DiMatteo). This type of behavior doesn’t sit well with Donatella, who has her own brood (a husband and two kids) to look after, leading to “jealous bickering” between Donatella (her “brother’s muse”) and Antonio (her brother’s man). At least Donatella and Gianni get along with each other better than they do with number crunching brother Santo (Colm Feore), who resents the way that he and his family are disrespected by his closer siblings. “House of Versace’s” turning point occurs in July of 1997 when Gianni is assassinated by serial killer Andrew Cunanan in front of his Miami palace. The filmmakers do an excellent job of marrying the vintage funeral footage with that created for the film. From this point on we witness Donatella’s downward spiral, resulting in the dissolution
guymag.net
of her marriage, estrangement from her daughter and son, and the Versace legacy in ruins. Not even the arrival of matriarchal Aunt Lucia (Raquel Welch channeling Sophia Loren) seems to have an effect. To make matters worse, Princess Diana’s sudden death sends Donatella over the edge. All is not lost, however, and an intervention leads to Donatella being whisked away to rehab in a private jet. Clean and sober (but still smoking like a fiend), Donatella comes back better than ever. She designs a new and beautiful collection built on the foundation made by Gianni and peace returns to the kingdom. Campy fun for gay men and their straight women friends (and, of course, all those lesbians who have been crushing on Gershon since “Bound”), “House of Versace” is classic home entertainment. The DVD contains no bonus materials. Like “House of Versace,” “The Bling Ring” (A24/ Lionsgate) is based on real people and events. Taken from a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales, “The Bling Ring” follows the exploits of Adderallpopping, selfie-snapping teen thieves who perpetrated a string of Hollywood Hills burglaries. Gay teen Marc (Israel Broussard) meets Rebecca (Katie Chang) on his first day at the “dropout school” they attend. They click and soon they’re getting high at the beach, talking about their future goals and stealing the contents from unlocked cars in upscale neighborhoods. From there they move on to unlocked houses, where they help themselves to money, credit cards, jewelry, purses and cars. Clubbing with Chloe (Claire Julien), they meet up with home-schooled best friends Nikki (Emma Watson) and Sam (Taisa Farmiga). Marc and Rebecca continue their “shopping” spree, with a stop at Paris Hilton’s pad, and soon their friends want to join in the felony fun. Their desire to “rob,” returns the quintet to the Hilton homestead where they help themselves to more goodies. Living the high life, in more ways than one, the gang achieves minor celebrity status; but even the most ardent fan knows this life of crime can not go on forever. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about “The Bling Ring,” aside from the sociopathic behavior and lack of remorse the teens exhibit, is the way Emma Watson is proving to be such a versatile actress (also see her in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”). Not stymied in the least by her tenure in the Harry Potter series, Watson is an actress to watch. However, if you’re still waiting for Ms. Coppola to live up to the promise of “Lost In Translation,” you will have to wait a little longer, because “The Bling Ring” is a disappointment. DVD special features include Digital Ultraviolet, “making of” and behind the scenes featurettes and more.

No Energy? Go From Zero to Overdrive! by Tom
Bonanti
o
It’s 2 PM and you’ve hit the wall. You’ve got three more hours of work ahead of you. Sure, you’d love to hit the gym and exercise, but how? And you still have a boat load of stuff to do when you get home. Constant fatigue can stem from a variety of culprits. Physical causes like poor sleep, too much partying, or even more serious underlying medical conditions like diabetes and fibromyalgia can drain you big time. Chronic weariness can be mental, too. Stress at work and in your relationships, depression, etc., can sap your get-up-and-go and leave you dragging and blue. If your fatigue persists over a period of weeks, then you need to see your doctor. But there are certain energy draining enemies that you can confront right now if you want to get from slow to “go!” at work, in the gym, and other places. Enemy #1: Eating a sugary, fat-filled breakfast. Carbohydrate rich meals inevitably cause you to crash, leaving you tired and felling fuzzy in the head. Instead of sugars and starch, start the day with whole grains and lean protein which take longer to convert into glucose and can sustain energy levels for longer periods. How about a bowl of oatmeal with blueberries or two poached eggs with tomatoes and lettuce? Enemy #2: Skipping your exercise routine. Whatever you do, make sure to get to the gym. People who regularly complained of fatigue increased their energy levels by more than 20% with regular, low-intensity exercise according to a 2008 University of Georgia study. You don’t have to run marathons or live at the gym. Just do something, even for as little as 10 minutes a day. Use the stairs, do push-ups at your desk, walk to lunch. Enemy #3: Drinking more java. One to three guymag.net
cups of coffee per day will no doubt give you that needed zap of energy. But any more than that will keep you awake at night. Coffee also over-stimulates the production of two hormones--adrenalin and cortisol--that can work against you. Chugging too much coffee can over stimulate adrenaline production which can leave you cranky and tired. Too much cortisol can make you store fat and leave your muscles sore and tired. A hot cup of coffee is a delight. Just don’t over-do it! Enemy #4: Eating the wrong snacks. Stay away from sugary quick fixes like honey buns, cookies and candy bars. Likewise avoid high-energy sugary energy drinks. These foods cause a sudden spike of energy as your blood sugar rises, then a crash as your body has to over produce insulin to help your system deal with the excess sugar. Instead, try high fiber or protein snacks like a slice of turkey, edamame (fresh soy beans) or nuts like pistachios, almonds or walnuts. Enemy #5: Feeling too stressed. Your brain doesn’t distinguish between the anxiety of dealing with a bitchy boss or being chased by a rabid dog. Either way, the body releases “fight or flight” hormones that help you cope with stress. The trouble is, the build-up of heavy duty hormones can wreak havoc on your body. Besides wrinkles and fatigue, you can eventually expect a whole array of physical and psychological problems like heart disease, ulcers and diabetes. No matter how busy or important you are, take a day off. Try yoga, visit a spa, learn to meditate. For more tips on a healthy metabolism contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.
