STONEWALL

Still “Glamorous”

An interview with Sheila E. by

Richard Hack

o

It may be hard to believe, but it’s been 30 (!) years since Sheila E. released her breakthrough album “The Glamorous Life.” The disc contained the huge titular hit single, as well as “The Belle of St. Mark” and the classic cheating tune “Next Time Wipe The Lipstick off Your Collar.” A singer/songwriter and multiinstrumentalist, Sheila rose to fame through her affiliation (both personal and professional) with Prince and then went on to make a name for herself through her boundless talents as a performer. I spoke with Sheila, who is performing on June 21 at Stonewall Pride Wilton Manors, in June 2014.

Gregg Shapiro: 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of your album “The Glamorous Life.” Do you have anything special in the works to commemorate that? Sheila E: (Nothing) other than I still play “Glamorous Life” and I love it just as much as the first day I ever played [laughs]. GS: So there won’t be a special 30th anniversary expanded edition with bonus tracks and such? SE: No. GS: How would you say that you have evolved

guymagtube

professionally and creatively since that time? SE: I’m definitely not 20-something years old anymore [laughs]. Through life’s trials and tribulations, you learn a lot. Things that I thought were important when I was younger are not. You get your priorities in order. As crazy as it was back in the day, and I enjoyed it, I love life now more so than ever. I really appreciated what I had. It was an amazing time then. Going through that, good and bad, as a songwriter, your songs change based on lifetime experiences, as well as things that you’ve heard from other people; you want to tell a story. Before it used to be “baby, baby, baby,” and not it’s “my love, my love” [laughs]. The words are a little bit different and they’re more meaningful. GS: You come from such an amazingly musical family – do you think you were destined to go into music, or was there a point when you thought – “Gee, I’d like to be a doctor or a lawyer”? SE: Actually, I didn’t know I was going to be a musician until I played one of the shows with my dad. I had played with him on and off, but it wasn’t until I was 15 and I played that show that changed my mind. I had been dabbling in music a little bit. He had me play violin from the fifth grade until eighth grade. I got scholarships for violin. I took it because he wanted me to, but really I was an athlete. I wasn’t planning on being a musician. The two things I wanted to do were; be the first woman astronaut and the second thing was to win a gold medal in track and field. I was a sprinter. I was breaking records in all the competitions in junior high. I was training to be in the Olympics. That’s what I wanted to do. Instead of getting a gold medal, I ended up getting a gold record. I think that’s cool. GS: Not a bad trade-off. In a field dominated by men, you have also made a name for yourself as an in-demand female drummer and percussionist, working with everyone from Prince to Diana Ross, to mention a couple. What does it mean to you to be a pioneer in that field? SE: I don’t think you realize that you are one of a few when you first start performing. I don’t know if there were any women playing timbales, fronting a band as an R&B/pop act. I was the only one of its kind, basically. Now, it’s awesome that there are so many women playing drums, percussion, timbales, congas, bongos, African instruments. It’s impressive to see how many women and young girls are playing. I have to tell you that it’s very humbling for them to come and tell me that I paved the way for them. I didn’t realize that until that point. I know what my dad had done for me to inspire me and when young girls and women come up to me and say I’ve inspired them, you don’t realize how you touch people until later

guymag.net

on when someone tells you. GS: You are performing at Stonewall Pride in Wilton Manors on June 21. When did you first become aware that you had a following in the LGBT community? SE: [Laughs] It’s so funny because I don’t separate people how we all separate each other. I just look at people as people out of respect and love for people. I just love people. I had no idea (about the following) until people started talking about it. I know you’re going to laugh and think I’m crazy, but I just learned what (LGBT) was about three weeks ago. I know this may sound strange, but I had no idea. One of my friends, a gay man, said that to me. I said, “Wait, what is that again?” He laughed at me and said, “You don’t know what it means?” I had no idea. He said, “You have a huge (LGBT) following.” I look at people as people; there’s no discrimination, there shouldn’t be. I don’t look at it as, “You’re different from me.” GS: Now that you know of the following in the community, what does it mean to you? SE: It’s awesome! Are you kidding? It’s fantastic! GS: When you come to South Florida, do you make a point of checking out the exciting live music scene? SE: Oh, absolutely [laughs]! I love music. I remember back in the day, I used to hang out in Miami a lot. I was there all the time. Definitely hitting the clubs to listen to the music and to go dancing. I tried to hear live music, especially Latin and salsa. Forget about it! If there’s a driver picking me up, I ask, “Who’s playing? Is there a club I can go to tonight?” GS: Your memoir, the cleverly titled “The Beat of My Own Drum,” is to be published in September. If there was a movie version of your life story, who would you like to see cast in the role of you? SE: That’s a good question. I thought about that, even while I was writing the memoir. We’re actually going to do a movie. I have a couple of people in mind. The first person who acts as goofy and crazy as I do is my niece Nicole Richie. We’re the same. Nicole is just like my mom. I would say Nicole. But also, Nicole (Scherzinger) from The Pussycat Dolls. I think she would play me very well. I spoke to them about it about two years ago, letting them know I was going to write the book and do this. They said, “That would be awesome. She would love to play you. But we would have to start teaching her how to play timbales [laughs].” Sheila E. plays on the center stage at the Stonewall Pride Wilton Manors at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

STONEWALL

Neon Hitch Does Gypsy Pop by

Paul Hutnick

o

The last time we crossed paths with Neon Hitch, she and we were at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Neon looked like the fashionable gypsy she is, all dolled up in a turban and strapless gown, an expensive looking fur being dragged behind her as she flitted from one appearance to another. For the uninitiated, Neon will be performing live at Rumors Bar & Grill on Wilton Drive as part of its special Stonewall Pride events that will be going on all day on Saturday, June 21. Neon will spin some music at 9 p.m. before gracing the special stage erected to accommodate her act, which she calls “gypsy pop.” Constantly in evolution, Neon was born in Nottingham, England, and by the age of four, was a seasoned street performer who joined a circus, became a trapeze artist, a fire dancer, and stilt walker before beginning a music career that has witnessed some sexy hits on the dance music charts including “Gold” with singer Bruno Mars. Neon—yes, that’s her real name, don’t you know—had a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. She worked two years on an album titled “Beg, Borrow and Steal” before scrapping the entire effort, commenting that it didn’t have “enough of her soul.” Welcome to corporate America. Instead, she threw herself into a sizzling “Some Like It Hot,” a sexy, bass-driven flirtation,

the video from which you can catch on YouTube anytime of the day or night. Neon connects with LGBT audiences across the world, telling fans at her recent appearance at Sacramento (CA) Pride, “I definitely feel like this is my tribe. I love the feeling when we’re together. I feel very passionately about bringing awareness, and music is such a powerful, vital tool for bringing awareness.” Amen. For Rumors Bar & Grill, having Neon Hitch as its headliner for Stonewall Pride will only serve to turn the spotlight on that passion. Neon is expected to be wearing her sexiest short-shorts and bustier bra as she brings the crowd to its feet with hits such as “Warner Blvd.,” “Gypsy Star” and “Red Lights,” her newest recording that tells of her “Bonnie and Clyde”-esque adventure in India. Two criminals in broad day with a rickshaw for a getaway At the airport, when they search you, we cover up our tattoos, she sings. Oh, and speaking of tattoos, just days ago, Neon Hitch got on her forearm of her childhood tour bus along with the words “Trailer Trash.” Remember, you heard it here first. Rumors is located at 2426 Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. guymagtube

Amado Mio oPier Paolo Pasolini is one of the most celebrated homosexual artists of the 20th century—a poet, writer, intellectual, and filmmaker. His controversial 1975 piece “Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom” remains one of the most disturbing films ever created, combining power dynamics, politics, grotesque guymag.net

violence, and sex. During that same year, Pasolini was murdered gruesomely, run over by his own car repeatedly. A male prostitute later confessed to the crime and then decades later recanted. Andrew Living Arts Studio presents a staging of one of Pasolini’s posthumous works, Amado Mio. In Italy during World War II, a teacher and three of his students escape through the countryside toward the American army. Warning, like most of Pasolini’s work full frontal male nudity will be on display. 8:30 p.m. Andrew Living Arts Studio. 23 NW Fifth St. Fort Lauderdale. 33301.

Avenue Q oEntr-Acte Theatrix in Delray Beach will stage the popular 2004 Tony winner “Avenue Q.” The raunchy musical utilizes puppets and their human handlers in a unique combination of puppetry and music. Spa Day

Stonewall Pride with Sheila E. oOne of the premiere events for America’s best gayborhood, Wilton Manors’ Stonewall Pride Parade and Festival features a host of entertainers and events for any proud gay man. The headliner this year is dance music superstar Sheila E., performing on the main stage along with a collection of local talent. A parade stretching from Fort Lauderdale High School to Five Points at Dixie Highway begins at 7:00 p.m. and includes floats from local businesses and companies. The parade can be viewed anywhere along the strip, with bleachers set up at various locations across the Drive. The festival also includes vendors reflecting the diversity of our community. Vehicular traffic will be closed from 5:00 a.m. on Saturday until 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, so expect a late night of hard partying. 11 a.m. Wilton Manors. 33305.

Rumors Pride Festival oAs part of their contribution to the Stonewall Pride Festival, Rumors hosts their own stage and dance party with a live, all-day concert. DJ Marcio spins from 5 to 9, with an intermission at 7 for a drag show. Then Neon Hitch makes her way to the turntable. Live performances include Padia, Emily Sheila, Octo Gato, and Paul Bellantoni, A Girl Named Chuck, and Elisa Seda. Drink specials include $6 Ketel One cocktails from 9 to close. Also at 9, Rumors turns into a spectacular glow party. Get your drink on, radiate, and celebrate pride. 11 a.m. Rumors. 2426 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.

oWhat better way to recuperate from a Pride filled weekend than by relaxing at a spa “Out Traveler” named one of the ten best gay spas in the country. The Spa at the Grand Resort has plenty of services to help cure hangovers from the many Long Island Ice Teas or muscle tightness from the many hours dancing to repetitive electronic music. Whether it’s a Swedish massage, reflexology massage, or power recovery massage, the Grand has it all. Facial treatments offered include flash exfoliation, moisture boost, age management, skin soothing, and more. Why venture into a grinding workday without feeling fully refreshed? A spa day at the Grand can ease the Monday blues. The Grand Resort and Spa. 539 North Birch Road. Fort Lauderdale. 33304.

Jonathon “Boogie” Long o With all of the electronic dance diva music having been sufficiently played out after the weekend, Jonathon “Boogie” Long offers a reprieve in the form of his Louisiana-based blues/solo music. The virtuoso guitarist currently leads his own trio, the Blues Revolution. He has played before with B.B. King and Dr John. In 2011, he was crowned Guitar Center’s “King of the Blues” from a field of over 4,000 contestants. His career skyrocketed from there. He’s created an instructional blues style DVD and starred in an independent film titled “We Be Kings.” 8 p.m. Funky Biscuit. 303 SE MIzner Blvd. Boca Raton. 33432.

____________________ ____________________ Sunday 6/22 Wednesday 6/25 Murder Mystery at the Mardi Gras oIn one of the greatest episodes of “The Golden Girls,” Dorothy Zbornak is unwittingly involved in a murder mystery dinner theater game. She solves the riddle by the night’s end, in her true-to-form supercilious manner. Come have your very own haughty Dorothy Zbornak moment as the Mardi Gras Casino hosts their own Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. A troupe of professional improve actors will conduct an investigation, divulge clues, and place blame on multitudes of suspects. The guests must work together and find the real culprit. Red herrings, plot twists, and hilarious conversation will be on the menu. 3 p.m. Mardi Gras Casino. 831 N. Federal Highway. Hallandale Beach. 33009

Beyonce and Jay-Z oWho wouldn’t want to be a fly on the wall listening to the fight over who would get top billing in this powerhouse couple’s concert tour? Beyonce rocked the music industry in the end of 2013, secretly releasing her well-reviewed, personal CD “Beyonce” with zero pre-release press. The “visual album” became the end-of-the-year conversation piece and a new staple in the gay community. Her husband, Jay Z, hasn’t had too bad a career himself. Now a businessman as much as a rapper, he is one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists and entrepreneurs in America. Tonight they share the stage, along with their love. 8 p.m. Sun Life Stadium. 2269 NW 199th Street. Miami Gardens. 33056.

DINING

Gregarious Drinkery by

Richard David Chamberlain

o

There’s a new social gathering spot on the Drive called Gregarious Drinkery. With its sofa seating and stonewall décor, it’s a high-energy, sophisticated place to assemble pre-bar crawl on any given night. They’ve got seven flat-screen TVs which circle the bar and surrounding restaurant, a jukebox that plays dance music from the 70s, and a video system that allows TV shows and major league baseball to be played at the same time as cult classic films like “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Marilyn stayed with us during a recent meal at Gregarious, which has now opened its kitchen and has a menu of assorted bar basics including burgers, salads, and housemade Potato Chips ($4.95) and cut-to-order French Fries ($4.95). In an interesting “one from column A; one from column B” approach, the drinkery offers entrees that can be accessorized with “protein” (in this case, shrimp, chicken, ground Angus beef, fish, and ground turkey) for $1.50-$2.00 more. Given that this is basically a video bar and not an Italian restaurant, we decided to throw caution to the wind and order the Pasta that comes standard with freshly shaved Parmesan cheese atop an extra version olive oil dressing. A small portion will set you back $6.95 with a large going for $8.95. being drizzled with a spicy chipotle sauce and We ordered the large pasta bowl with shrimp topped with green onions. TRAVEL

Rich, Dark & Delicious by

Rick Karlin

o

My name is Rick and I’m a chocoholic. Last week I licked the frosting off a cake and threw the cake away. I get a Tootsie Pop and smash it on the ground to get to the chewy, chocolaty center. I’ve been tempted to snort cocoa like cocaine. To paraphrase an old saying, “I like my chocolate like I like my men: dark, rich and filled with cream.” So, it’s no surprise that I have an entire file folder filled with places to check out for a chocolate fix when I’m traveling. Europe is on the agenda this fall because the 20th anniversary of The Salon Du Chocolat will be

held in London from Oct. 17-19. The Salon du Chocolat is like the ultimate circuit party for chocoholics. Imagine more than 60,000 square feet of exhibition space dedicated to chocolate and cocoa! Chocolatiers unveiling their new products, live demonstrations, workshops, exhibitions and special events all pay tribute to the humble bean. The highlights of the show include award presentation and a chocolate fashion show, where all the creations are edible. For its 20th Anniversary, the Salon du Chocolat will present a great retrospective exhibition featuring the 150 most beautiful chocolate

dresses ever. Entrance fees are a quite reasonable £15 (£12.5 if purchased in advance). There are other shows scheduled throughout the world. For a list of cities and dates or more information, go to http://www. salonduchocolat.fr. As long as I’m in London, a trip to the Rococo flagship store on Kings Road is in order. In the winding aisles of all things chocolate, I can sip hot chocolate in a courtyard while watching chocolatiers in action, take a truffle-rolling class at the adjacent school, and, of course, shop for all things chocolate. For more information on the store and classes, go to http://www.rococochocolates. com/. After a short ride on the Chunnel train to Paris, for the Salon du Chocolat show there (Oct. 29-Nov. 2), I’ll make a short stop for the impossibly thick chocolatchaud. More than a simple hot chocolate; this is like chocolate lava, at Angelina on Rue Rivoli (http:// www.angelina-paris.fr/en). Then I’ll head to Montreux and board the Swiss Chocolate Train, for a round trip journey in a 1915 Pullman car to Nestlé’s Maison Cailler chocolate factory, in the western Swiss village of Broc. An hour-long tour begins with a look at ancient Aztec cocoa ceremonies, a view of the milk chocolate production line and ends with an all-you-can-eat tasting experience. Reservations are required and can be made at http://cailler.ch/. To totally bliss-out, I’ll also work in a tour of Confiserie Poyet in Vevey for a chocolate tasting class. For more information go to http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-us/confiserie-poyet.html, and a chance to enter a contest to win an assort-

ment of Swiss chocolates. Of course, if my budget didn’t allow the trip to London and Paris, I could always head north to Mast Brothers Chocolate, in Brooklyn. Sourcing their cacao from small farms in Ecuador, Madagascar, and Venezuela, the Mast Brothers create artisanal chocolate confections from scratch at their Brooklyn factory, which offers tours during which you can see how raw cacao beans from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Madagascar are hand-sorted, roasted and winnowed through a machine custom-made by a former aerospace engineer. One of the tour’s highlights is seeing a demonstration on how flavors like fleur de sel and coffee are added to the confections. Tickets are inexpensive, but do require advance purchase. Go to http://mastbrothers.com/. In Somerville, Mass., just outside of Boston, the Taza factory tour, with its aroma of dark chocolate, lets you know that you are in for an intense chocolate experience. The 45-minute tour ends at the company store, which is laden with free samples and includes some limited edition creations. For more information, check out http://www. tazachocolate.com/Tours. Of course, any tour focusing on chocolate would have to make a stop in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey Chocolate World’s Great American Chocolate Tour includes a chance to create your own candy bar and go on “Hershey’s Chocolate Tasting Adventure.” A quick stop at the Museum on Chocolate Avenue for the Hershey story and some hands-on activities is a must before heading off to Hershey Park for a day of riding roller coasters, visiting the water park, taking in some of the campy shows and, of course, sampling chocolate. Before heading home, book a day at the Chocolate Spa. The treatments at this high-end hotel spa include a dark chocolate fondue wrap, a whipped cocoa bath, an edible dark chocolate facial and an invigorating chocolate sugar scrub. For more information on attractions in Hershey, go to www.hersheypa.com. I’d say more, but I’ve got a half-gallon of Dove Unconditional Chocolate Ice Cream to consume before lunch. Pass the spoon.

Bust Those Junk Food Cravings! by Tom

Bonanti

o

The south Florida summer heat is upon us! That means guys are stripping down and taking off their clothes everywhere. On the beaches, at pool parties, Pride events, and on The Drive! No more hiding that jiggle or concealing those pesky love handles. Do you need to take off a pound or two, but just can’t seem to muster up the will power to bust those constant cravings? Well, here is a list of appetite suppressant foods that are popular and healthy. You may even have them in your cupboard or fridge at this moment. An apple a day may not actually keep the doctor away, but certain fruits, like apples can keep monster hunger pangs at bay. High fiber fruits like apples, pears and plums generally require more chewing time, giving your body extra time to register the fact that you are no longer hungry. They are also rich in fiber which helps to make you feel satiated. Therefore you’re less likely to over eat. One study in Brazil found that people who ate three small apples a day as part of a healthy diet lost significantly more weight than those who didn’t eat apples. Real oatmeal is one of the healthiest carbohydrates. It’s low on the glycemic index and has a high fiber content, so it enters your bloodstream slowly and keeps you full for a long time. One bowl of oatmeal consumed daily can reduce cholesterol 8-23 percent. For breakfast or as a snack, a small bowl of oatmeal not only provides long lasting energy, but it makes an excellent appetite suppressant. Throw some chopped up fresh fruit and even a scoop of protein into your bowl of oatmeal and you have a perfect nutrient dense, energy meal. Flaxseed oil is the best known plant source of guymag.net

omega-3 fats, but raw flax seeds are even better, especially for appetite control. One ounce of flaxseed provides the added benefit of 8 grams of fiber. Fiber fills you up and when you’re full, you eat less. Studies at the National Cancer Institute show that flax seeds lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and can increase good cholesterol (HDL). Flax seeds are a wonderful source of extra protein scattered over soups, salads or in smoothies. Whey protein powder can help you lose weight, build muscle and control your appetite. This inexpensive, easily obtained and assimilated protein also supports the immune system and lowers blood pressure. One study even suggests that whey protein has a fat burning property in it. For body builders who have to eat 5 or 6 times a day, a whey shake consisting of 25-30 grams of protein makes a wonderful meal replacement both before and after a workout. If you want to avoid overeating, try eating a small salad before a meal. The fiber helps slow the entrance of glucose into the bloodstream, making you less likely to be hungry. When I suggest a salad here, I don’t mean a Chef Salad loaded with meats and cheeses and fatty dressings. Use simple oil and vinegar or light dressings you can make at home and vary your salad choices with spinach, mesculin, endives and cabbages. There you have it! Eat all of the salad, veggies, fruits and protein you like, never get fat and curb your appetite for harmful junk food. Enjoy the season and remember, you are in control of your cravings!
