FILM

Obviously Funny

An interview with actor Gabe Liedman by

Gregg Shapiro

o

There’s never been a movie quite like the indie comedy “Obvious Child,” opening Friday locally. That’s not just because the movie is about a single stand-up comedian named Donna (the amazing Jenny Slate) who gets pregnant after a one-night stand with Max (the hot Jake Lacy) and decides to have an abortion – on Valentine’s Day, no less. It’s because the BFF relationships between Donna and Nellie (grown-up child actor Gaby Hoffmann) and Joey (gay comedian Gabe Liedman) have an authenticity that is rare. Of course, Slate and Liedman are BFFs in real life, so that probably has something to do with it. Nevertheless, their onscreen interactions are hilarious, and one of many reasons to see “Obvious Child.” Liedman, who has made a name for himself outside the stand-up comedy world, including as a writer for the acclaimed Fox sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” starring Andy Samberg. Liedman spoke with me about “Obvious Child,” Slate and more in June 2014. Gregg Shapiro: Gabe, you make your feature film debut in the new movie “Obvious Child.” What was the experience like for you? Gabe Liedman: An 11 out of 10. It was the most positive [laughs] experience ever. I will say that if anyone else ever gets the opportunity to work with the people I got to work with, say yes! GS: What was it that made it such a great experience? GL: It’s hard to see this now, because it’s a film that’s playing in theaters across the country. But when we were making it, it had no guarantee of ever being seen. It was a really small budget and a really small crew. We were kind of all friends or becoming friends. It was so positive and low-key, which makes everything that’s happened since just such a huge happy surprise. GS: You play Joey, the gay best friend of Donna, played by Jenny Slate, in “Obvious Child.” What was it about the character that made you want to play him? GL: I really liked the portrayal of the gay best friend [laughs] in this movie. I thought that this was, first of all, not snarky. He’s a little snarky, but in the way that you’re realistically snarky with friends. He doesn’t wear a bow tie, he’s not her roommate, he’s not her assistant. He seems to have his own life. I felt like (writer/director) Gillian

20

theguymag

(Robespierre) was creating a gay guy like I think I am, like my friends are. I thought, “Hell, yeah.” GS: What would you say are the challenges and rewards of being a gay man playing a gay man in a movie? GL: It’s really nice [laughs]. I write for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which is a show on Fox set in a police precinct. The captain is gay and he’s played by Andre Braugher, who’s not actually a gay guy. Every day, I watch a straight guy play a gay guy. That’s always kind of a minefield. You can really pull it off if you are a talented actor who is being given material that lets you be respectful and show love and all that stuff. But there’s also something really nice about “The Normal Heart,” where most of the cast playing gay guys, except for the lead, are actual gay guys. They’re not walking into that minefield of, “Do I do a voice? Should I hold myself differently? Is my co-star going to be weird when I kiss them?” I’m also really happy to be living in a time when actors can be out of the closet and still work. It’s the best! I have a lot of people to thank for that, including straight people for not shunning people anymore [laughs]. There are a lot of brave gay guys, too, who said, “Fuck it. I’m going to live my life.” They came out. They’re still working. It’s great. I feel lucky it was even an option to be a gay guy and still get a part.

guymagtube

GS: In addition to being a gay guy, you are also a comedian. What are the challenges and rewards of being a comedian playing a comedian in a movie? GL: If anyone knows who I am, they know me because I do stand-up. I don’t want to be in a more widely available format doing stand-up I don’t believe in. That was something that took zero fights and zero convincing to get across to Gillian. She was so open to help in writing the stand-up and she was so inclusive of my voice and Jenny’s (Slate) voice as individual performers to the point where it was like, “Great, now I’m not scared at all.” Part of what you see there is standup that I’ve been doing as myself for a long time. Part of it is stuff that I improvised on the spot just for the hell of it. GS: The way a comedian would do. GL: Yes, exactly. The Jeffery Dahmer stuff; that was just a riff in between something much longer. It’s so funny on its own. Gillian has an eye for comedy. She is so funny and such a good director. But she’s never done stand-up and she knows that. It’s a huge relief to be doing stand-up in a movie that is actually funny. It’s all because of Gillian’s self-confidence and attitude. GS: How would you best describe your relationship, both personally and professionally, with Jenny Slate? GL: Personally and professionally are very intertwined for us because we’ve been best friends since we were about 18. We met during freshman year of college (at Columbia University) in the comedy club at our school. When we started doing stand-up, we started as a duo before we went solo. I think we are each other’s home base. Beyond that, we also cook dinner together sometimes and know each other’s boyfriends and husband and go to the supermarket and talk on the phone. Now that we’re both busy in Hollywood, we go for hikes in the morning before we get to work. We’re very in touch with each other. GS: Valentine’s Day figures into the “Obvious Child” storyline. How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? GL: I think Valentine’s Day is great when you’re with someone. I think it can be great if you’re single and a friend is single. But it is the kind of thing that sneaks up on me every year and looms over me. It’s one of those days where when you are single, you wonder if you should make plans or do you hope that you’ll be walking down the street and find love. There’s that weird pressure. I’ll just say it -- I’ve never had a successful Valentine’s Day [laughs]. But what the hell, I’m young. I’m not dead [laughs]. GS: Donna works at a bookstore which is in the

guymag.net

process of going out of business. Do you have a preference for physical books or e-books? GL: I only read physical books. I haven’t been moved to buy an e-reader. I’ll subscribe to magazines online, but when it comes to a book, I want it in my hand. More than that, I want it on my shelf when I’m done. I like having it around. I’m strictly a paper book person. GS: Sadly, in 2014, a woman’s right to choose, the subject matter of “Obvious Child,” is still a hot-button issue. Are you prepared for a potential backlash against the film? GL: You have to be prepared for anything, certainly. No one who made this movie is unaware of the fact that, in the last year or two, this has been the most aggressive congress ever in trying to limit a woman’s right to choose. This issue, even though I live in L.A. and I’ve lived in New York and Philly and I’ve always been around people who are like, “Are we still talking about that?” But for the rest of country, absolutely; it’s an issue that, sadly, is never going away. People are prepared for people not to agree with it. I don’t know if it will be a backlash. There are a lot of shut doors, a lot of people who won’t be reached by this. I know that Gillian and Jenny and the producers are not interested in fanning that kind of reaction for publicity. You won’t find Jenny going on Glenn Beck to have the argument to get clicks on the blog. I don’t think anyone is using the issue for attention, negative or positive. But I think the fact that they are the first people to do what they’ve done with this movie earns them positive attention. The negative will come, but hopefully it will come in the form of crossed arms and rolled eyes, and nothing scary. GS: Is Jake Lacy, who plays Donna’s love interest Max, as dreamy in person as he is on screen? GL: Even more so! That is him “dressed as a dork.” That character is supposed to be like a geeky guy, and he’s still so gorgeous. Yes, Jake showing up on set, dressed as himself, is indeed… America’s going to eat him up. He’s gorgeous and very funny and sweet and nice. GS: Finally, Gabe, what can you tell me about any new or upcoming projects you have? GL: As I mentioned, I write for “Brooklyn NineNine,” which is a huge show and that takes up most of my brain and heart and time. I’ve also got scripts that will be seeing the light of day sooner rather than later. For the most part, my life is “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”. Season two of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” starts this fall and season three of “Kroll Show” comes out in the winter. Those will sound a lot like me because I wrote for them [laughs].

“Uncovered: The Diary Project” oPier Paolo Pasolini is one of the most celebrated homosexual artists of the 20th century—a poet, writer, intellectual, and filmmaker. His controversial 1975 piece “Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom” remains one of the most disturbing films ever created, combining power dynamics, politics, grotesque violence, and sex. During that same year, Pasolini was murdered gruesomely, run over by his own car repeatedly. A male prostitute later confessed to the crime and then decades later recanted. Andrew Living Arts Studio presents a staging of one of

Re-designing Women oThe 1980s television sitcom “Designing Women” is known for both Delta Burke and its flamboyant, Southern style. The show focused around two sisters, Suzanne and Julia Sugarbaker, and the other members of their interior decorating firm, Sugarbaker Designs. Now a gay cult-classic (with reruns currently playing on Logo), the show has been remade into a play for the Empire Stage. The satirical play sets the action in the same Atlanta design firm, except all the characters are now performed in drag. Parodist playwright Jamie Morris wrote the show, which places the four Southern belles on a reality TV show. 8 p.m. Empire Stage. 1140 N Flagler Drive. Fort Lauderdale. 33304.

Katy Perry has been one of the top-selling pop music vocalists of the past decade. Her hit songs have included “Roar,” “Dark Horse,” and “Unconditionally.” She burst onto the music scene with the tongue-in-cheek, bisexually flirtatious “I Kissed a Girl.” From there, her popularity skyrocketed with both the gay community and the culture at large. SCREEN SAVOR

“The Case Against 8” (HBO Documentary Films), has its cable premiere on June 23 on HBO.

Mysterious Strangers by

Gregg Shapiro

o

Just in time for Pride month, Ben Cotner and Ryan White’s same-sex marriage doc, “The Case Against 8” (HBO Documentary Films), has its cable premiere on June 23 on HBO. Following the historic gay marriage trajectory, from the 2008 California Supreme Court case ruling permitting same-sex couples to marry through the crushing blow of the passage of the Proposition 8 ballot initiative defining marriage in California as a celebration between one man and one woman. Of course, the doc doesn’t stop there. It follows the two couples that challenged Prop. 8’s constitutionality by filing a lawsuit with the federal government, “The Case Against 8” lays it all out for us. Even though we know the outcome (the good guys won!), because we become intimately acquainted with the plaintiffs – gay male couple Jeff and Paul and lesbian couple Kris and Sandy – “The Case Against 8” becomes a nail-biter as we watch the couples swing from high to low through the process that lasted almost five years. As interesting as the couples’ stories are, additional details, including their legal representation by Ted Olson, the most prominent conservative lawyer in America and George W. Bush’s solicitor general. It

48

was Olson who won the contentious Bush v. Gore 2000 recall vote, halting the Florida recall count, giving us four more years of Bush; and, along with David Boies, Al Gore’s campaign attorney, often takes center stage. Supporting characters, including Prop. 8 proponent Bill Tam, American Foundation for Equal Rights board members Rob Reiner and Dustin Lance Black, David Blankenhorn of the Institute For American Values (a favorite of the Prop. 8 people who does a stunning 180), as well as openly gay, Republican appointed Judge Vaughn Walker, make for interesting viewing. If there’s one complaint – and you can be sure religious fanatics and right wing wackos will make this observation – “The Case Against 8” is proudly and blatantly onesided. You probably gleaned that from the title, but the superior attitude (earned and deserved!) grows tiresome and works against the cause. The 10-year anniversary Blu-ray edition reissue of “Mysterious Skin” (Strand) opens with a new two minute intro by queer filmmaker Gregg Araki that neither adds nor detracts from the film. “Mysterious Skin” was the indie movie version of a perfect storm. The best film of Araki’s directing career, it was his first time adapting a novel, Scott

guymagtube

Heim’s acclaimed first book of fiction, for the big screen. The film also features Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie’s haunting score. But the real coup, for a low-budget indie, was the amazing cast. After playing a homophobic Mormon missionary in “Latter Days”, Joseph GordonLevitt took the lead in “Mysterious Skin”, playing Neil, a sexually abused boy who became a gay hustler. Levitt’s co-stars include actor/director Brady Corbet, Elizabeth Shue, Michelle Trachtenberg, Bill Sage and Mary Lynn Rajskub. Faithful to Heim’s novel, “Mysterious Skin” spans a 10-year period, from 1981 to 1991, in which Brian (Corbet), a socially awkward asexual teen, attempts to explain a missing five-hour period from his eighth year. Convinced he was abducted by aliens, Brian’s search leads him to Avalyn (Rajskub), a woman who also claims to have had a similar experience. But does she have ulterior motives? Only slightly better adjusted, Neil, who discovers the effect he has on men at the hands of his pedophile little league coach (Sage), turns his sexual prowess into a money-making business in his hick-town. By 1983, young Neil (Chase Ellison) is exhibiting anti-social behavior, something observed by “soul-mate” Wendy (Riley McGuire), but overlooked by his distracted and irresponsible mother (Elizabeth Shue). Years pass and the boys follow their life paths. Neil heads to New York after high school, crashing at the older Wendy’s (Trachtenberg) apartment and hustling, before getting a job at a sub shop. Brian remains behind, living with his mother (Lisa Long) and befriending Eric (Jeff Licon), a high school classmate of Neil’s who had a crush on the unattainable boy. But Brian’s persistence pays off and he’s soon able to connect the pieces of his lost hours, realizing that Neil was somehow involved. A fateful Christmas 1991 meeting of Neil and Brian, following Neil’s brutal rape at the hands of a psychotic trick, is the first step toward the boys making peace with their past. If you can handle the difficult subject matter, “Mysterious Skin” is strongly recommended. Gordon-Levitt’s extraordinary

guymag.net

performance was a turning point in his acting career. Blu-ray bonus features include deleted scenes, an interview with Gordon-Levitt and Corbet at Sundance 2014, an interview with author Heim and more. Here are some of the ways you know that “Stranger By The Lake” (Strand) is a French film, not an American one: the subject matter (gay men cruising and having sex near a lake), the nudity (some of the men at the beach sunbathe naked), the depiction of gay sex (graphic, including erections and orgasms, and realistic to say the least), and men in Speedos (need more be said?). Attractive and fit gay man Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps), makes small talk with dumpy straight man Henri (Patrick d’Assumçao) at the beach on a summer day. Franck used to sell vegetables at the market and is trying to figure out his next move, while the newly single Henri is a logger. Their conversation ends abruptly when Franck sees mustached Michel (Christophe Paou), a man in whom he’s interested, and follows him into the wooded area, littered with condoms, condom wrappers and crumpled tissues, where an assortment of men have either paired off or are hoping to do so. But Franck’s pursuit of Michel hits a road block when he suspects that Ramiere (François Labarthe) is Michel’s boyfriend. A pattern is soon established. Franck arrives daily at the lake’s parking lot and takes his place on the beach next to Henri. Franck and Henri become better acquainted, with Henri’s eyes being opened to the various nuances of gay culture and behavior. More often than not, Franck wanders into the woods to test his own wood making skills. Things take an unexpected, decidedly dark turn. “Stranger By The Lake” borders on becoming a kind of serial killer flick, if you can believe what you think you see. As terrifying as it is tantalizing, “Stranger By The Lake” is a unique and above-average thriller. In French, with subtitles. DVD bonus material includes an interview with writer/director Alain Guiraudie. “Stranger By The Lake” is also on Vimeo On Demand at http://vimeo. com/ondemand/strangerbythelake.

TRAVEL

Atlanta: It’s a Peach by

Rick Karlin

o

While Atlanta’s Pride festival doesn’t take place until October, you might want to head up there for a long weekend at the end of June and catch Rainbow Days at Six Flags Over Georgia on June 28. It’s just a little over an eight hour drive to Atlanta. Round trip airfares from Fort Lauderdale run about $250-$300 and it’s about a two hour flight. By the time you figure the two hours at the airport before your flight, you’re not saving much time (and that’s if there are no delays), so driving is a real consideration. Rainbow Days at Six Flags Over Georgia ticket packages are available and range from $49.99, which is the same as general park admission, but also includes, free parking, entry into the private Pavilion area for entertainment, an all you can eat buffet and entry to the water park (good until August 31, if you want to make a whole weekend of it). The general admission ticket is $35.99. To purchase the official T-shirt, only available on-line, go to http://www.rainbowdaysatsixflags.com/#!rainbow-days-store/c251y. Rainbow Days is produced by a private, for-profit corporation and the event is not a benefit for any GLBT agency. For more information, go to http://www.rainbowdaysatsixflags.com/ Of course, if you’re going up to Atlanta, you’re going to want to do other things as well, including bar-hopping. Atlanta’s main gayborhood is Midtown and it has no shortage of GLBT bars and clubs. For the leather crowd, there the legendary Eagle, if you prefer your guys undressed, there’s also a Swinging Richards in town. Mixx is good for dancing, Blake’s on the Park is a friendly neighborhood bar and Burkhart’s Pub has performances and dancing on the main floor. If your preference is for quieter areas, head out to the patio or the upper level, and the

food here is way better than it needs to be. Bulldog’s spins house and hip-hop and the drinks are strong, Xion is a members only, after-hours club and is only open Sundays from 3 to 9 a.m. Atlanta is a foodie’s heaven where you can find anything from haute cuisine to finger licking BBQ. Cowtippers is all about comfort food. Beware; the enormous Texas Margaritas are deadly. Roxx may not draw the young ‘uns, but the burgers and chili are killer and Sunday brunch is a hot ticket. Buckhead puts upscale twist on diner fare, with prices to match. Doc Chey’s is a mini-chain featuring Asian favorites, with locations throughout the Atlanta area. Eats is a favorite budget spot serving healthy fast food ranging from jerk and BBQ chicken with sweet potatoes, collards, and hot mac n’ cheese to fettuccine Alfredo and fresh vegetarian dishes. For a bit of sight-seeing check out Piedmont Park, right in Midtown, shop at Atlantic Station or visit The High Museum of Art, with more than 13,000 modern and contemporary works of art. Frankly my dear, no visit to Atlanta is complete without a visit to the Margaret Mitchell House, where most of “Gone With the Wind” was written. If you’re going for stay in Midtown, you’ve got a number of choices from upscale hotels (W Atlanta Midtown, Hyatt Regency Atlanta) to the boutique Ellis Hotel to B&B options (Stonehurst Place and Hello, both come highly recommended). If you’re looking for something cruisey, check out the Cheshire Motor Inn. Rather rough it and save some dough? River’s Edge gay campground isn’t too far out of town. The Embassy Suites at the airport is the host hotel for Rainbow Days and is offering special rates, use the promo code: RBD. Enjoy!

FITNESS

Staying Fit During Vacation Travels by Tom

Bonanti

o

Summer is a perfect time for taking a much-needed vacation. For many of us, it is the only time that things slow down a bit from the hectic routine so that we can break away and relax. Yet, no matter how much we look forward to time away from the rat race, traveling doesn’t come without a few concerns, especially when it comes to maintaining your overall fitness routine. Aggravation over flight delays, missed connections and lost baggage are but a few of the stresses of modern travel. Combine these with crappy fast food, poor sleep and missed workouts, and you have a recipe for disaster. Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, don’t throw in the towel yet! Simply adjust your mindset and realize that you can stay fit and trim and keep that hard earned muscle. After all, isn’t your vacation a time to strut your stuff and show off all the hard work you’ve done in the gym all year long? First, learn to take control of your nutrition. Think ahead and check out restaurants online and find places that have healthy menus that are within your budget. When dining out, often the low-fat or vegetarian meal is a good choice. Stay away from breads and appetizers, sticking instead with soup or a salad before your main course. These foods tend to fill you up and make you less hungry for that monster main course ahead. Take the skin off chicken and scrape those salty, fatty sauces to the side. Skip the dessert! As a footnote, don’t be afraid to throw caution to the wind on occasion and splurge at a fancy restaurant for a night or two, especially if daddy is paying. You only live once and one sumptuous meal and a guymag.net

bottle of fine vino or a few cocktails won’t set you back that far! Speaking of sauce, try to set a limit of two drinks per day. Alcohol not only makes you hungrier, it’s also loaded with calories. There are 7 calories in every gram of alcohol. Eventually it is turned to sugar in your system and stored by your body as fat. Besides, your vacation time is too precious to stay bombed and hung over! Second, you need to exercise on the road. If you don’t already have a schedule full of activities that are physical and challenging, then make sure to make time for working out while you are away. Call ahead, to see if your hotel or guesthouse has a fitness center or pool. If you’re staying at a facility sans gym and pool, then find out if there is a health club nearby. You may have to pay $10-$50 for a few days pass, but it will be the wisest travel expense you’ll make. Set a special goal that you can hit while on the road with your workouts. For example, it could be a cardiovascular-based goal such as seeing how many laps you can perform in the hotel pool. Or if you have no gym available and are confined to your room, see how many crunches or push-ups you can do in a one-minute period. Remember, fitness is more than just counting calories and hitting the gym a few hours a week. It’s a lifestyle that requires sacrifice and planning. But have fun with it and be adventurous as well! Contact TrainertomB@aol.com with all your fitness questions. Call Tom and set up a free intake today! Check out my facility in Ft. Lauderdale www. pumpnincgym.com!
