Chill Wine Lounge o This gay-friendly wine lounge is located right next to the Gateway cinema (or, often described as the “Gay-way”) and serves a vast array of wine. They offer a 2-4-1 happy hour from opening until 7 p.m.. The quaint, “deco-glam” atmosphere and comfortable seating area makes Chill a special space for a group of friends, first dates, or even for a relaxing evening alone. They also have different appetizers available, including cheese plates. Tonight may be a great evening to enjoy discounted wine before an evening showing at the cinema. 4 p.m. Chill Wine Lounge. 1828 E Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale. 33304.

Fall Out Boy/Paramore o Pete Wentz has been a tabloid fixture and mega-celebrity thanks to the once underground turned mainstream group Fall Out Boy. In 2005, the group broke through when their album “From Under the Cork Tree” produced the major hits “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Dance, Dance.” share with us on guymag.net

They took a three-year hiatus to explore other projects yet regrouped in 2013, gathering more success with their latest album, featuring the mega smash “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).” Emo-pop or not, Fall Out Boy has been one of the more interesting elements of the music scene for the past decade. Tonight they perform with angsty opening act Paramore, known for last year’s monster hits “Still into You” and “Ain’t it Fun.” 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sansburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.

Sara Bareilles o If emo-pop isn’t enticing enough, what about a singer-songwriter and pianist who reached fame with the 2007 hit single “Love Song”? Bareilles is a musician in the style of such great performers as Fiona Apple, Billie Joel, and Regina Spektor. She has been nominated for multiple Grammys, including Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Her third studio album, “The Blessed Unrest,” debuted at #2 on the Billboard album chart last year. The best part about Bareilles? Not only does she play the piano, sing, and write her own music, but she also knows the guitar, ukulele, and harmonium. She is definitely a multi-talented musician. 7:30 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314. THE WEEK continues on page 47 theguymag

Vans Warped Tour

Bartenders’ Boxers and Briefs

o The premiere alternative music festival is still riding high after over a decade. Although not as extremely punk as it once was, the festival still features an eclectic mix of bands across multiple genres such as pop, emo, hip-hop, electronica, and hardcore. This year’s line-up includes such popular groups as Less Than Jake, the Maine, Saves the Day, Cute is What We Aim For, Mayday Parade, and the Devil Wears Prada. One highlight of this festival is the accompanying skating tour with high-flying demonstrations by extreme athletes and vendor booths. 11 a.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sansburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.

o Bill’s annually hosts one of the kinkiest charity events in all of South Florida. Most gay Wilton Manors denizens have fantasized, even idly, about the beautiful bartenders serving drinks daily. Whether romantic or more lascivious, these fantasies can evolve even more significantly if participants end up winning some of the auction items at Bill’s Underwear Auction of the Bartenders’ Boxers and Briefs. Miss Kitty, Russell of the Stable, and Nikki Adams serve as both MCs and auctioneers. The best part of this possibly tawdry function is that all of the proceeds benefit Tuesday’s Angels, a local HIV/AIDS charity. 8 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.

o Ironically, punk and ska band 311 used to be a signature act of the Warped Tour. Tonight they perform on their own, just a short drive away from the music festival. Their signature hits came in the late 1990s during the short-lived ska resurgence in the American pop music landscape. Their two biggest hits “All Mixed Up” and “Down” were radio staples in 1997. Since then the Nebraskan band has released a multitude of albums and maintained their rabid fan base. Their most recent album is named “Stereolithic.” 6:30 p.m. Sunset Cove Amphitheater. 12551 Glades Road. Boca Raton. 33498.

John Legend o John Roger Stephens (aka John Legend) began his career like many successful artists, by collaborating with more famous acts, including Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, and Jay Z. These smart collaborations eventually led to his immensely successful solo career. So far he has won a total of nine Grammy Awards. His hit song “All of Me” was number one on the charts. He has worked outside of the music world, as well, donating his time and money to philanthropic efforts such as Teach for America and the World Economic Forum. Tonight he performs his seductive R&B. 7:30 p.m. MIzner Park Amphitheater. 590 Plaza Real. Boca Raton. 33432.

le patio o Known for its comforting and delicious food, le patio has been a quiet little staple of Wilton Manors for six years. Opened by a French lesbian couple in 2008, le patio boosts some of the finest, most customer-friendly food on the Drive. Favorite dishes include lobster ravioli, shepherd’s pie, chicken quesadillas, and patio house lasagna. Desserts are just as nice with a special poached pear and roasted almond crumble and a crème brulée the highlights. Tuesdays are special, too, since wine is 2-4-1 on the entire wine list. 5:30 p.m. le patio. 2401 NE 11th Ave. Wilton Manors. 33305.

TRAVEL

Jacksonville: Out of the Shadow of Fort Lauderdale by

RobeRt elias Deaton

o

For too many years, Jacksonville, FL, has been regarded by muscle gods and hairless twinks as the ugly step-sister to Fort Lauderdale. If you haven’t paid a visit up north to our conservative neighbor, it is time to go explore. You’ll find that the party is just revving up with new-found excitement thanks to the gentrification of the Riverside, Avondale and Marco neighborhoods, just teeming with gays and lesbians. Oh, all right, perhaps “teeming” is a bit of an oversell, but as Florida’s largest city, there is absolutely no shortage of sweetie-pies and those who like them. Located along the St. Johns River, the city of 1,300,000 is flourishing economically, with affordable housing, trendy restaurants, and some fine tourist attractions including our favorite the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens (829 Riverside Ave). The Cummer (gotta love that name) has a wide variety of European masters and American impressionists, to be sure. But head outside for the real show. The two-and-a-half acres of outside gardens along the river are a cruising paradise for those in the know. The Jacksonville Municipal Stadium (1 Alltel Stadium Place) was only constructed in 1995, but has recently undergone a $63 million renovation. Among the additions are a 25,000-square-foot sports bar called the Bud Zone, and a 20,000-squarefoot Patio, as well as newly renovated clubs and suites. Adjacent to the stadium, on the old practice fields (used from 1995 through 2003) is a 400,000-square-foot entertainment zone known as the Pepsi Plaza. For Jaguars game days, this area includes tailgate cabanas for pregame hospitality, a corporate hospitality area, interactive games, and a stage for pregame and postgame entertainment. On our first trip to Jacksonville many years ago, we stayed in the now-defunct Heart of Jacksonville Motel, an absolute dive that served us well for many a one-night stand.

We’ve upgraded these days, and highly recommend the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Riverfront-Downtown (1201 Riverplace Blvd, on S. Main St.). It’s an extremely gay-friendly chain hotel with a 24-hour gym that’s hard to beat for convenience. It’s close to all things relevant, and has an incredibly lavish outdoor pool overlooking the St. John River, complete with glistening bodies from the local muscle set who have taken to using it as their sunning spot du jour. For more diehard training, there is always the dependable Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym theguymag

(11740 San Jose Blvd) where the men of mass congregate when they’re not showing off their eight-packs on the dance floor at The Metro (849 Willow Branch Ave between Plum and Green) in its Disco Club. Now, here’s the deal. The Metro is actually seven clubs disguised as one, and the dance floor is just the beginning. On weekends, the Boiler Room hosts The Metro’s Dick Dancers, who take it off for tips. In Club Shadows, the fake fems do their impersonations. fined gentlemen, there’s the Rainbow Room, a intimate piano bar. Fresh air is a constant at the outdoor Tiki Bar, while Sapphos is The Metro’s very own women’s bar with a full authentically female revue. Don’t ya love it? The one-time Third Dimension 3D has simplified its name and its look. Now called In Cahoots (711 Edison Ave at Park St), the club has a different theme every night, Drag, hip hop, casino nights, and go-go girls should be enough to convince you to check in advance what’s going down. DINING

Kingpins Pizza and Wings BY

RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

o

Bryan Nosal, the popular ex-manager of Steel Gym, has left the fitness business to become the proprietor of Kingpins Pizza and Wings, tucked within the Manor Bowling Alleys, on 26th Street. While it may seem a bit of a stretch to move from health workouts to gooey cheese pizzas and fried chicken wings, Bryan has always been less about the workout experience and more about enjoying life. SCREEN SAVOR

Michael Douglas and a Jewish Priest by

GreGG Shapiro

Michael Douglas, who won a 2013 Emmy for his portrayal of Liberace in “Behind The Candelabra,” has made a career of playing unlovable characters over the course of the last 25 or so years; from Gordon Gecko in “Wall Street” and Oliver Rose in “The War of the Roses” to Grady Tripp in “Wonder Boys” and Ben Kalmen in “Solitary Man.” You can now add curmudgeonly realtor Oren Little in “And So It Goes” to that list. Racist, sexist, anti-child and anti-canine, Oren

o

(Douglas) doesn’t have anything nice to say about anybody, including his neighbors/tenants, his co-workers or even his own son Luke (Scott Shepherd). His deceased wife Sarah Beth was the only person he ever truly loved. That is until he meets, insults and makes nice with next door neighbor, the widowed and overly emotional lounge singer Leah (Diane Keaton). But “And So It Goes” wouldn’t be a rom-com for the senior set if Oren didn’t go through a metamorphosis, like the caterpillars

and butterflies in his granddaughter Sarah’s (Sterling Jerins) science project. Of course, Oren didn’t even know he had a granddaughter until his estranged son told him about her, shortly before going to prison for an SEC violation. And so it goes that Sarah and Leah aid in Oren’s transformation. “And So It Goes” was directed by long-time supporter of the LGBT community, Rob Reiner, the filmmaker responsible for classics such as the standard-setting rom-com “When Harry Met Sally…,” as well as “This Is Spinal Tap,” “The Princess Bride,” “Stand By Me” and “Misery.” Reiner appears to have mellowed since his `80s heyday. The fact that he had to resort to cheap physical comedy, including scenes involving a Slip’N Slide pratfall and a Rottweiler humping a giant teddy bear, indicate that he needs to find screenplays worthy of his, and his cast’s, proven talents.

Spanning more than 60 years, including childhood flashbacks, the DVD “The Jewish Cardinal“ (Film Movement) is a dramatization of the true story of of Jewish Cardinal Jean-Marie Aaron Lustiger (Laurent Lucas), directed by Ilan Duran Cohen. A holocaust survivor and the son of Polish immigrants, Lustiger’s childhood conversion to Catholicism is one of the factors that lead to him being named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II (Aurélien Recoing) in the early 1980s. Studying Hebrew in Paris in 1979 with the goal of being a priest in Jerusalem, Lustiger is surprised to learn that the pope has other plans for him. Named Bishop of Orleans, Lustiger not only encounters resistance from his widowed shopkeeper father (Henri Guybet) and cousin Fanny (Audrey Dana), but also conservative Catholics. As he rises through the ranks of the church, becoming an archbishop and finally a cardinal, Lustiger becomes famous for both his short-fuse and his boundless capacity for compassion. Throughout the film, Lustiger insists on maintaining a sort of Jewish identity, at one point referring to himself as “God’s mixed child,” declaring that he didn’t desire his fate; that it came upon him. Because of this dual heritage, Lustiger is thrust into a situation involving the insensitive establishment of a Carmelite convent on the grounds of Auschwitz (where Lustiger’s mother perished). This is an especially eye-opening segment as it portrays the Polish Catholic clergy’s ignorance about the symbolism of Auschwitz and also succeeded in reigniting anti-Semitism in Poland 50 years after the war. Due to Lustiger’s determination to communicate the urgency of the situation to the pope, who was utterly blinded by his obsession with the defeat of the godless communists, that a resolution was eventually reached and a healing process could begin. The biggest problem with “The Jewish Cardinal,” and one that proves to be an unnecessary distraction, is that the passage of time is well documented in the faces of some characters (Pope John Paul II, for instance), while others, including Jean-Marie and Fanny are simply (and unbelievably) ageless. If you want to see a better representation of a similar type of story, see Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Ida,” currently playing in theaters. Isabelle Stead’s short film “Kosher,” about a boy and his pig, is among the bonus material. theguymag

FITNESS

Five Habits That Will Keep You Fit and Buffed by Tom

o

As a fitness trainer and gym owner, I’m often asked the same questions: “How can I stay fit? What’s the best way to lose weight and gain muscle? How often must I work out?” All of these questions are valid and I can’t offer easy answers. Once more, there is a lot of conflicting information out there that will frustrate and confuse you. Let me tell you about 5 simple habits that I believe will keep you healthy and buffed for a very long time. 1) Be consistent: Make exercise a permanent part of your lifestyle. Schedule it into your day like any other important appointment. Try to exercise the same time of day if you can, and keep your program fun and challenging. Never go more than two days without exercising, otherwise it becomes too easy to make lame excuses. If you can’t get to your gym or fitness class, then take the stairs at work, take a walk after dinner. Stay active and do anything except make excuses why you can’t exercise. 2) Work out smarter, not longer: Experts say that just 20 minutes of moderate resistance training a few times per week can help preserve and even build muscle as well as increase bone density and overall joint flexibility. That’s a good place to start. If you are short on time or bored with plodding through your same old routine for hours on end, be adventurous. Try high intensity interval training (HIIT). Push yourself harder by alternating blasts of cardio with weight training for shorter periods of time, say 30 minutes per workout. Pump up the intensity of your workouts by taking shorter rest periods. Save socializing, texting and gossiping for the office. When you go to the gym you are there to work! 3) Prepare food ahead of time: If your weeks tend to be crazy busy, then take some time on the weekend to prepare food for the hectic days ahead. Make homemade granola bars, boil some eggs, whip up some smoothies, chop up and bag fresh fruits and veggies for energizing snacks. Take food to work and avoid share with us on guymag.net

vending machines and fast food joints! Eat out less and prepare what you eat if you are truly serious about your nutritional plan. 4) Watch your Body Image: Too many guys and ladies I know are hell-bent on having “the perfect body”. It is called Body Dysmorphic Disorder and it is a malady most of us suffer from at some point or another. It is reinforced by the mass media – 20 something models with 2% body fat, air-brushed to the max. These become our standards of beauty, the apex of perfection. Bull! Very few of us can live up to these unrealistic images. Your body is a work of art in progress. It is not perfect, but for god’s sake accentuate the positive with hard work and good nutrition. Learn to accept your body, imperfections and all. You’ll live a happier life. 5) Get more sleep: Eight to ten hours of uninterrupted slumber is recommended as the norm for all of us. Sleep allows your body to recover from daily stress. It also helps your body to grow and recover after workouts and fitness activities. Try not to eat less than three hours before retiring. Restrain your alcohol intake especially before bedtime. Remember, fitness is a lifestyle that takes effort and commitment. For more great fitness tips: contact trainertomb@ aol.com.
