Miss Florida F.I. 2014
A Royal Return BY
RICHARD HACK
o
Miami FL – After a seven year hiatus, the Miss Florida Female Impersonator pageant returns to Miami on Monday, August 11 at the Deauville Beach Resort, 6701 Collins Avenue, in Miami Beach. Previously, the pageant Velvet Lenore was nicknamed “The Social Event of the Season” attracting some of the top-named female impersonators and entertainment personalities from across the US. Judges for this year’s event include Latrice Royale of Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 4 and All Stars, Venezuelan-born fashion designer Rafael Cennamo, and make-up artist Ronny Anuzzkka. The current Miss Florida F.I., Victoria Michaels, told Guy Magazine, “My reign as your distinguished Miss Florida F.I. has been the longest in the Florida pageantry history, and it’s been my distinct honor and unequivocal privilege to have held this coveted title over the years. Using the Miss Florida F.I. win as a
launching platform, in 2008 Victoria joined a coalition force in cooperation with TERI (Transgender Equal Rights Initiative), Equality Florida, and activist Michael Rajner to stand before the Broward County Board Déja Devonier of Commissioners. Her advocacy insured that all transgender individuals would have protection against hate crimes and anti-discrimination laws in the work place. The board voted unanimously in favor of transgender rights. The pageant was started in 1972 by Keith Landon and Rene Rodriguez. This year’s pageant will offer a diverse mix of the old rich history and fond memories as the show pays tribute to former Miss Florida F.I. who will participate in the show. Miss Florida F.I. Pageant 2014 opens Monday evening at 7pm with a celebratory gathering at the Deauville Hotel lobby bar with a Silver Anniversary soiree honoring former Miss Florida F.I. 1988 Lakishah Lucky.

Launched in 1982, the Games invites participation from everybody, regardless of sexual orientation, race, gender, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political beliefs, athletic or artistic ability, age, physical challenge or health status. The Gay Games were conceived in 1980 by Dr. Tom Waddell as a “vehicle of change.” For over a quarter century, the Gay Games have built an international legacy of changing cultural, social and political attitudes towards LGBT people across the globe, while at the same time empowering tens of

thousands with the transforming benefits of sports competition. In 1981, gay athletes were a hidden and marginalized community within the greater marginalized and beleaguered LGBT community. Being gay and being an athlete was an either-or proposition: Be a jock or be a queer. All of that changed when the athletes marched into Kezar Stadium in San Francisco in 1982. Since that time, the Games have been held in Vancouver, New York City, Amsterdam, Sydney, Chicago, Cologne, and now Cleveland/ Akron.

Crazy Fingers o The Grateful Dead ended as one of the most popular jam bands in history. Since Jerry Garcia’s death, “deadheads” have been trying their best to remain true to their hero’s roots while still enjoy the trippy music in a simulacrum of those amazing concert performances. Crazy Fingers is a local Grateful Dead tribute band that pays homage to Garcia and his legacy, satisfying “deadheads” as much as is possible. Come listen to such hits as “Truckin’,” “Brokedown Palace,” and “China Cat Sunflower.” 8 p.m. Funky Biscuit. 303 SE Mizner Blvd. Boca Raton. 33432.

and rap metal. Linkin Park gained fame in 2000 when their debut album “Hybrid Theory” became the best-selling album of the year. Since then they have experimented with other genres but remained firmly in touch with their hard rock roots. The other band on the tour is Jared Leto’s band, also known as Thirty Seconds to Mars. After his Oscar win, he is back to his passion—the stage. Thirty Seconds to Mars is acclaimed for their energetic and innovative performances. 6:30 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sansburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.
Jay Pharoah o In America, the best avenue for becoming a world-renowned comedian is through the television show “Saturday Night Live.” Almost all of the A-list comic actors today once appeared on “SNL” Jay Pharoah has been on the show for almost four years. As a regular, he has had success with recurring characters such as MC George Castanza and Principal Daniel Frye. Tonight he returns back to a comedian’s roots, the stage. His celebrity impressions (bound to be on display tonight) include Eddie Murphy, Kanye West, Denzel Washington, Jay-Z, and Will Smith. 8 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S Rosemary Ave. West Palm Beach. 33401. Jennifer McClain
Kishi Bashi
o Jennifer McClain has become a fixture in the Wilton Manors gayborhood. The songstress has performed at multiple venues along The Drive. Her dynamic, entertaining personality combined with her luscious vocals has earned her fans throughout South Florida. Every Saturday in the Manchester Room at George’s Alibi, McClain sings an eclectic mix of personal favorites, audience requests, and musical theater standards. There are also original tunes, in which she makes up catchy and hysterical lyrics to popular songs, Weird Al style. 8 p.m. George’s Alibi. 2266 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.
o Kishi Bashi has performed violin for the most indie of rock bands. He’s toured with Of Montreal and Regina Spektor, while also forming his own band named Jupiter One. Kishi Bashi’s second fulllength solo album, entitled “Lighght,” showcases his talent, highlighting violin, vocal loping, and beat boxing. Many have compared his musical style to Andrew Bird and Owen Pallett, both indie music heroes. Bashi has played at some of the biggest music festivals in the country, including SXSW and Austin City Limits. 7:30 p.m. Culture Room. 3045 N. Federal Highway. Fort Lauderdale. 33306.
Let My People Come o On the 40th anniversary of the original production of “Let My People Come,” Andrews Living Arts presents their own updated version of the groundbreaking play. Earl Wilson, Jr. created the piece in 1974 when it opened at the Village Gate Theatre in Greenwich Village. It played for 1,327 heart-throbbing performances and became a sensation. It explores the world of sex with catchy and socially critical songs that range from “Screw,” to “I’m Gay,” and “Doesn’t Anybody Love Anymore?” Added new tunes and ad-lib interviews with the audience give this production a contemporary bent. 8 p.m. Andrews Living Arts Studio. 23 NW Fifth St. Fort Lauderdale. 33301.

T-Pain o At one point, T-Pain was featured in over 50 chart-topping singles. This Florida native certainly has had his hand in a lot of different artists’ work. His most successful feature was in Flo Rida’s song “Low.” T-Pain isn’t just a singer, though. He also is the founder of his own record label named Nappy Boy Entertainment. Although his lyrics are rather raw and controversial, perhaps the most shocking thing T-Pain did was in 2013: he cut off his signature dreads! Tonight he performs music from his newest album “Stoicville: The Phoenix.” 7 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW Third Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

Nine Inch Nails/Soundgarden
Sandra Bernhard
o Founded by Academy Award winner Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails came to prominence in the 1990s with their dark, controversial video “Closer.” The album “The Downward Spiral” became a commercial success and catapulted Nine Inch Nails into worldwide fame. Soundgarden, around the same time, was riding the alternative music scene’s gravy train, with their popular album “Superunknown.” These two bands have had rabid followings ever since and team up for a concert that is sure to be as intense as their music. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sansburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.
o Comedian and lesbian icon Sandra Bernhard has had a fine, provocative career. She began as a comedian before getting her big break in Martin Scorsese’s “The Kings of Comedy.” From there, she received widespread critical acclaim for a one-woman show she performed Off-Broadway titled “Without You I’m Nothing.” Her best-known role, though, may be as the first recurring lesbian character on TV, a flighty airhead named Nancy, on the legendary sitcom “Roseanne.” Since that time, Ms. Bernhard has had a daughter, performed more stand-up, and started her own web-series. Tonight she brings her ironic wit and sharp commentary to Boca Raton. 7 p.m. Jazziz Nightlife. 201 Plaza Real. Boca Raton. 33432.

SCREEN SAVOR
Sci-Fi Fiesta by
GreGG Shapiro
o
Do you hate comic books? Does the mere thought of Comic-Con make you crazy? What about sci-fi? Does it make your skin crawl as if there were, perhaps, aliens living beneath it? Are you done with 3D? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then “Guardians of the Galaxy” (Marvel) is the movie for you. To begin with, it’s easily the best comedy of the summer. Yes, you read that right. “Guardians of the Galaxy” begins in 1988, when, following the death of his mother, young Peter (Wyatt Oleff) is abducted by an alien space craft (won’t spoil the reason why) and whisked off to a far-off galaxy. Twenty-six years later, still using his Walkman to listen to the mix-tape his mother made for him, Peter (a buff and nearly sexy Chris Pratt), aka Star-Lord, works for a band of thieves, led by Yonndu (Michael Rooker). On one mission, he steals a lethal orb containing a powerful and deadly Infinity Stone which also happens to be of interest to the ruthless Ronan (Lee Pace). The fate of the galaxy rests in whose hand the stone lands. Most of this sounds like pretty typical comic book/sci-fi setup. The good news is that “Guardians of the Galaxy” is worlds away from typical or predictable. Sure, it’s full of (mostly) cool special effects, a respectable amount of 3D trickery and fast-paced action. Perhaps the movie’s most special effect is the incredibly funny screenplay, co-written by director James Gunn and Nicole Perlman. Like the strange and humorous characters who populate the movie, including mean green killing machine Gamora (Zoe Saldana), revved up raccoon Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), shape-shifting tree being Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) and musclebound and tattooed Drax (Dave Bautista), the screenplay doesn’t take itself too seriously. The comedy is out of this world. Even fight scenes are punched up with laughs. With the exception of Pratt, and maybe Saldana, Glenn Close (as peaceful ruler Minister Prime) and John C. Reilly (as cop Corpsman Dey), everyone else is practically (and digitally) unrecognizable. That means that comic book geeks and sci-fi fan-boys now have new (formerly neglected) heroes to drool over, as Peter

and his misfit crew go about earning their names and titles. “Guardians of the Galaxy” gets off to a great start. If they can maintain that momentum, they may have a series strong enough to challenge and conquer some of the others. As dystopian Y/A sagas go, the movie version of “Divergent” (Summit), now available as a double disc Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD combo pack, is no “Hunger Games.” Shailene Woodley is a decent actress, but she’s no Jennifer Lawrence and Woodley’s character, Tris, is no Katniss. Now that we got that out of the way, should you see the movie? Set some time in the future, 100 years after the war that left Chicago a mere shell of its former self (in other words, worse than what diminutive Mayor Emanuel has already devastated). Society has been broken down into factions. The family of Beatrice (Woodley) – mother Natalie (Ashley Judd), father Andrew (Tony Goldwyn) and brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort), are members of the selfless Abnegation faction. In their mid-teens, Beatrice and Caleb theguymag

are being sent for tests to determine whether they will remain in Abnegation, or choose another faction, such as the agricultural Amity, the truth-telling Candor, the daring protectors known as Dauntless, or the intellectually superior Erudite. As the saying goes, “faction before blood.” Wouldn’t you know it? During Beatrice’s testing the results are inconclusive leading to one determination. Beatrice is Divergent, a rare subfaction that is hunted for its ability to combine all factions and is therefore considered dangerous. Leading the witch-hunt is Erudite ice-queen Jeannine (a bleached blonde Kate Winslet), who also has her sights set on bringing down Abnegation, the faction currently in charge. Making matters worse, Beatrice and Caleb don’t select Abnegation during the choosing ceremony, seemingly wounding their parents. Caleb goes off and joins Erudite, while Beatrice surprises everyone by becoming Dauntless. But her transition, which includes taking the new name Tris, won’t be easy. She must go through rigorous training (echoes of “The Hunger Games”). As she rises through the ranks and share with us on guymag.net
proves herself to naysayers such as leader Eric (Jai Courtney) and smug newbie Peter (Miles Teller), Tris also finds herself drawn to Four (the stunningly beautiful Theo James). And who wouldn’t be? But, of course, their attraction goes much deeper than just tattooed skin. Before long, the insidious subplot is revealed as Tris discovers Jeannine’s evil plans for domination. In between, there are messages about facing fears and loyalty that will have a familiar ring to audience members of all ages. At least 40 minutes too long, “Divergent” stuffs a lot of setup into its first installment. Ultimately, it suffers from a variety of ills, not the least of which is being derivative. Not only because of its countless similarities to “The Hunger Games” and other grim future flicks, but also because it feels like it owes a debt to other movies, such as the Jason Bourne series. Nevertheless, things may improve, as they did in “The Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire,” but we won’t know until next year when “Insurgent” is released. Blu-ray special features include a doc, a featurette, deleted scenes and audio commentary. theguymag

VINYL VERSION
In the Nick of Time by
GreGG Shapiro
There’s a lot to be said about the 25th anniversary 180 gram vinyl reissue of Bonnie Raitt’s multi-Grammy Award-winning 1989 album Nick of Time (Capitol), remastered from the original analog tapes. First, rest assured that it sounds as marvelous and timeless as the first time you heard it, on vinyl or CD (it was originally released in1989, after all). Producer/ musician Don Was (of Was Not Was fame) met the challenge of lifting the longtime singer, songwriter and blues diva out of shocking semi-obscurity and getting her the long overdue attention she had deserved. Sure, Raitt (the son of Broadway actor and singer John Raitt), had released nine albums on Warner Brothers, from 1971 to 1986, gaining a devoted following, skirting chart success and developing a devoted following in the heyday of FM radio, but superstardom eluded her. With Nick of Time, featuring the brilliant original title tune, Raitt not only (re)staked her claim as a gifted songwriter, she also proved that she hadn’t lost her talent as an interpreter of other people’s material. Her hit version of John Hiatt’s “Thing Called Love,” helped Hiatt as much as it helped Raitt. Producer Was was wise not to shift attention from Raitt’s long-established blues background, something that comes through on the Hiatt tune, as well as songs including “Love Letter,” “Real Man,” and especially Raitt’s composition “The Road’s My Middle Name.” Other timely tracks include the gorgeous ballads “I Ain’t Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again” (co-written by gay singer/songwriter David Lasley), “Cry On My Shoulder,” “Too Soon To Tell” and “Nobody’s Girl.”
like about his new album World Peace Is None of Your Business (Harvest). The twelve songs on the double LP, 180 gram vinyl edition of World Peace Is None of Your Business feature some of his best and most memorable lyrics, beginning with the welltimed title track, in which he deters any “poor little fool” from voting. Moz follows that with “Neal Cassady Drops Dead” (in which he tries some Allen Ginsberg wordplay) and “I’m Not A Man,” two of the queerest songs he’s ever written. With the right remix, the incredible “Staircase At the University” could become an unqualified tea dance sensation. The brass, courtesy of Gustavo Manzur, shines brightly on “The Bullfighter Dies” and “Kiss Me A Lot,” and “Oboe Concerto” brings things to a close on an experimental note. The World Peace Is None of Your Business
If you can forgive Morrissey for his propensity to cancel concert tours (something he’s gotten quite good at in recent years, virtually crushing his already overly sensitive fans), you will be happy to learn that there is much to

LP package includes a digital download of the deluxe edition of the album, including six (!) bonus tracks. You’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover. The same holds true for record albums. But, in the case of Tolerance (White Iris) by Incan Abraham, the feeling of exhilaration captured in the cover photo (a kid hanging out the window of – yikes! – a moving car with mountains in the background) comes close to depicting the sounds that these childhood friends have created on their debut album. In fact,
Incan Abraham sounds like a band that has been together longer than just five years. These 10 tracks are marvelous, running the gamut from lightly modern psychedelic (“Tram,” “Spring House” and the title cut) to stunningly beautiful pop (“Concorde,” “Forgiveness,” “All You Want” and “Peers”). The LP comes with a code giving folks access to download the songs on the album in digital fashion.

TRAVEL
Climb Every Mountain: GLBT Hiking Vacations by
Rick kaRlin
o
For some people, a vacation means just one thing: relaxation. This column isn’t for them. These vacations are for the adventurer who believes that mountains were made for climbing, trails for being hiked, and that it’s not a vacation unless you are exhausted, and exhilarated at day’s end. Sure, you could join any old climbing or hiking expedition, but why not enjoy an adventure organized by and for the LGBT community? Even if the closest you’ve ever gotten to The Matterhorn, is the ride at Disneyland, the Swiss Alps were made for hiking. HE Travel/Alyson Adventures’ week-long alpine excursion departs from the centuries-old village of Grindelwald to hike some of the best-known peaks (The Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau) and three glaciers. In addition to hiking, trains, trams and various lifts offer numerous options for scaling the peaks, making the trip comfortable for even beginning hikers. Optional add-ons include biking and paragliding. Spinning in a field of flowers, doing your best Julie Andrews impression is free. The next excursion is scheduled for July 4-11, 2015. The trip, priced at $3,098, includes seven nights lodging in a shared or single room, with private bath; six-day pass that covers most area trains, buses and lifts breakfasts, an opening-night reception, orientation, and dinner, two additional dinners; a beer-tasting and closingnight dinner. Other hiking and adventure tours from HE Travel/Alyson Adventures include hiking trips in Antarctica (Jan. 7-16, and Feb. 3-13, 2015 for $9950), Easter Island (July 17-22, 2015 for $2,698), the Galapagos Islands (July 1-8, 2015 for $4,998) and Iceland (Aug. 9-16, 2015 for $4,198).For more information, go to www.hetravel.com. Out Travel can take you to Africa to climb the slopes of famed Mount Kilimanjaro. The eight-day trip follows the Lemosho Route, which ascends slowly, making it easier to acclimatize to the altitude. The trip starts in

Tanzania with a day of an orientation to the climb before the six-day adventure begins. Days consist of hiking from early morning until mid-afternoon, then settling in camps for the night. After hiking through Hans Meyer Cave and Gilman’s Point the party will reach the summit point of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak (no “Star Trek” jokes, please), with an optional excursion to the crater floor. The party then descends to Mweka Camp for its final overnight on the mountain, followed by transportation back to the hotel and a farewell dinner. The nine-day excursion offers two departure dates; Jan. 28, and Feb. 10, 2015 and costs $3,149. Infotorobs) price are arrival and cluded (photo in thebyexcursion theguymag

departure transfers, two nights at Arusha Lodge, meals on the climb, mountain guides, crater excursion, camping supplies and meals during the hike. An added bonus, also included in the trip’s cost, is a travel insurance package covering medical, trip interruption and baggage loss. Out Travel also offers hiking trips to Patagonia and Nepal. The hike up the Andes to Patagonia is a 15-day excursion, departing from Buenos Aires on Jan. 3, 2015 for $3,999. The Himalayan climb in Nepal is an 11-day excursion. It begins in Kathmandu, followed by a week’s hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp on Mount Everest. Cost for the excursion is $2,699, with departures on Oct. share with us on guymag.net
4, 2014 and Feb. 21 and Oct. 10, 2015. For more information, go to http://www.outadventures.com/. All prices quoted are for the excursion alone and do not include airfare to the destination. While these trips may sound charming, you need to truthfully assess whether hiking and mountain climbing vacations are right for you. Most of the excursions, while not technically difficult, are strenuous and require hikers to be in good physical and aerobic condition. There are a number of LGBT organizations to help train for a mountain climb or strenuous hike. Contact http://www.gayoutdoors.org/ or http://www. gay-hike.com/ for more information. theguymag

FITNESS
Put Some Punch Into Your Workouts! by Tom
bonanTi
o
Working out with weights and doing regular cardio need to be a part of everyone’s life. In addition, if you can find a sport that is challenging and fun, something which you can do regularly with others, then you are sure to take your fitness to a higher level! Without a doubt, boxing is a very masculine sport. But beyond the machismo, the combination of working the cardio-vascular system, along with strength and endurance training add up to deliver a powerful workout package. You may not have the time to train like a Holyfield and you may not have access to all of the accouterments like gloves and a boxing ring, but you can still get started easily. All you need is a jump rope, a speed bag, and a good heavy punching bag (a sturdy laundry bag filled with sand, sawdust and rags will do). A basement, garage or empty guestroom should give you enough space. A great way to get started with a boxing routine is to find a partner. Next, be sure to warm up together by doing pre-workout stretches especially for shoulders, back and legs. Start your workout with a circuit training approach where you move quickly from one station to the next. Employ calisthenics like push-ups, pull-ups and crunches, as well as light to moderate weights. Shoulder dumbbell presses as well as front and lateral dumbbell raises will pump your shoulders. Dumbbell, or barbell bent-over rows are best for back. Nothing beats barbell squats and lunges for legs. This workout should take a half hour. And now, let’s go on to your boxing routine. Wearing heavy gloves (boxing gloves or even heavy duty workout gloves should do), start by throwing moderate punches at the heavy bag. Make sure your hand does not turn. You don’t want to strain or break the wrist. Alternating with your partner a few sessions, turn up the heat and hit the bag with more force. Try working up to three minutes of non-stop heavy hitting at a time and you’ll feel it. Now try jumping the rope. This will help you build rhythm, co-ordination and stamina. Jumping rope is a great form of cardio that will help
share with us on guymag.net
you melt away body fat. The speed bag is the one that hangs from a platform and springs right back at you when you strike it. A speed bag allows the user to develop hand rhythm and hand/eye co-ordination, along with endurance capabilities. Practice hitting the speed bag, until you get used to its feel. These exercises should be performed for three minutes each and then repeated. Eventually work up to five-minute cycles of punching bag, jumping rope, and speed bag. After you and your partner have completed the circuit twice, move to an area large enough for some action. Put on the gloves with your partner and begin a block/sparring session. One is the aggressor; the other guy blocks the punches. The aggressor should throw the punches at 80 percent speed, without trying hard to connect, and the defender only blocks the punches, with no return blows thrown. Switch roles after a couple of minutes. This provides good basic training in how to punch and how to defend against a punch. This will give you the feeling of how an actual fight unfolds. Be careful to avoid actual head blows and wear a mouthpiece for protection just in case. Contact trainertomb@aol.com with all of your fitness questions.
