From Alibi to Bill’s Filling Station
Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete

o
Visit Alibi on a Thursday night, and you will no doubt see them sitting at the main bar surrounded by a gaggle of admirers, ordering shots for their customers. Friday and Saturday, move across the street to their other place--Bill’s Filing Station, the one-time Chardee’s Club that they bought out years ago. But who are these pillars of the Drive— Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete? They are complementary opposites, that’s who. Negrete is a Yankee, having grown up in Chicago. Padgett is a good ol’ southern boy born in South Carolina. Negrete went

into the bar business right out of college; working at Gentry in Chicago and HG Roosters in Palm Beach FL before moving to Los Angeles and managing Micky’s Nightclub and The Apache. Padgett had a successful consulting career working in Atlanta and Tokyo before he gave it all up to be with his first husband on his farm in Tennessee and help raise his kids. Negrete remembers how the couple met, “I wondered ‘Who was this hot guy who seemed to have rushed into this town like a tornado?’ We would run into each other theguymag
guymagtube
whenever we went out. After about eight months, while at Boom, we both seemed to have the courage to talk.” For his part, Padgett says he wasn’t planning on a relationship, “My first husband died in 2004. I never thought I’d marry anyone again and then I met Mark a year later and here I am.” Padgett is the numbers guy, while Negrete is the creative one. As Padgett says, “We separate our skills. He takes care of all the special and charity events. I take care of the numbers and pay attention to the money. I try to make sure we do things well enough to be successful and he tells me where he wants the profits to go.” One of the things on which they both agree is a commitment to give back to the community. Negrete sums up his philosophy, “Living through the ‘80s and losing friends to AIDS and having the government act as if you didn’t exist at the time made me realize that we had a responsibility to take care of each other.” Padgett expands on their shared philosophy, “We give back; we have to. It’s our responsibility.” Later in our conversation, after a little prodding for specifics, he added, “We give almost $300,000 a year to charitable organizations such as Broward House, Care Resource, Kids in Distress, and others. People depend on us to be leaders of the community. If we don’t do something, no one else will. Our feeling is that if we treat the community well and take care of them, they will take care of us.” Neither one thought about being community leaders when they bought their first bar. As Padgett put it, “I built seven of the finest resorts in the world in my 25 years in the hotel industry. I’m very good about putting together strong teams and decided that I wanted to get into business for myself instead of making money for other people.” Negrete adds, “Jackson and I thought about buying a bar since our management schedules left us little time to be together.” Being partners in both business and life can be incredibly challenging, and both Negrete and Padgett admit that there have been some bumpy patches while navigating that road. “It’s been difficult. We certainly had our trials and tribulations, but we learned that we have the utmost respect share with us on guymag.net
for one another--not only as life partners, but as partners,” says Padgett. “Mark is an incredibly wonderful and talented man and I have the utmost admiration for him. It took me a while to get to that point, because honestly, I was used to being the center of attention. I think what happens with Mark is that he tends to end up in the shadows. I’m a big guy who commands a presence and unfortunately Mark doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.” “I’m somewhat of a shy person but my training in theater has helped me to step out of my comfort zone to deal with the many situations that come up,” admits Negrete. Both emphasize the importance of finding a balance in their lives. “The hardest thing (is) taking the time to wind down and separate yourselves from the craziness. It’s important to leave the work at the office and not talk about it at dinner,” explains Negrete. “I’m always 2-3 months ahead of myself in setting up events and performers, so sometimes I lose living in the moment because I’m setting up for Halloween or Christmas or Gay Pride.” “Sometimes I miss our corporate life when we would come home and just talk about our jobs, our day, the people we worked with. It’s sometimes very difficult for me,” Padgett reveals. When asked to what they attribute their incredible success in such an unpredictable economy, their responses mirror their focus on the business. Negrete focuses on the more public aspects of the business, “Our secret is our staff and entertainment! The best I’ve have ever worked with. We have had Lady Gaga to RuPaul to Leslie Jordan. We also feature the best local talents--Jennifer McClain, Florida’s own Dame Edna, Lenora Jaye and Nikki Adams! We are always looking to bring fun events and new entertainment to the Drive.” Padgett agrees with Negrete’s summation, while adding their great team of loyal, dedicated employees. Both agree, however, that all of the craziness and stress is worth it. Says Negrete: “The most rewarding part of running the bar is being so involved in our community and getting those emails about what a great time a visitor had at our establishments, and how they can’t wait to come back to see us again.” theguymag

Mobile DeathCamp o Not to be confused with Jack Kevorkian’s traveling van, Mobile DeathCamp is actually a heavy metal band created by former GWAR member, Todd Evans. Evans played Beefcake the Mighty share with us on guymag.net
for seven years before deciding to retire the metal costumes in order to focus on Mobile DeathCamp. Their music is a combination of old-school speed metal, accompanied by distortion and indecipherable growls. Based out of Toledo, Ohio, the band comprises of Evans, Boe Skadeland, and Chad Smith. They have been receiving more attention lately through music festivals and relentless touring. 7:00 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW Third Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

THE WEEK Zeppelin Experience was created to accurately and mesmerizingly portray Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones. This imitation includes spot-on vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards combined with the group’s legendary stage persona. Tori Amos o Tori Amos came to prominence in the mid1990s with her lyrically provocative, sensitively written music. Songs questioning God’s motives or an acapella description of rape made Tori Amos one of the voices of angsty generation X. Classic albums like “Under the Pink,” “Little Earthquakes,” and “Boys for Pele” established her as a commercial and critical success. She is also a classically trained pianist with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Tonight her piano playing and vocal chops will be on full display in Miami Beach. 8:00 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

SCREEN SAVOR
Give and Take by
GreGG Shapiro
o
The film version of “The Giver” (TWC), based on the cherished dystopian Y/A novel by Lois Lowry that predates “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent” by nearly 20 years, does a first-rate job of including Oscar-winning actors, such as Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges, alongside promising younger talent to bring this tale of memory and manipulation to the big screen. A pet project of Bridges’, who plays the titular character, a role he originally wanted for his late father Lloyd, “The Giver” has plenty to offer. Following The Ruin of the future, communities were constructed in which people minded the border, obeyed the curfew, followed every rule and did the job they were assigned. All of this and more was done in an effort to eliminate the conflicts, wars and annihilation of the past. In a (literally) black & white world where being different was frowned upon, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) saw things differently. It was something he couldn’t share with his mother (Katie Holmes in all her “Stepford” glory), father (Alexander Skarsgård), sister Lilly (Emma Tremblay) or best friends Asher (Cameron Monaghan) and Fiona (Odeya Rush). Jonas isn’t the only one aware of his difference and at the Ceremony of Advancement, held for teens his age to get their work assignments, Jonas is singled out by the ominous Chief Elder (Streep), and her equally menacing hair, to be The Receiver to Bridges’ Giver, and have all the past wisdom and memories of the world and society transmitted to him. It’s both an awesome responsibility and a luxury, as all restrictions are lifted from Jonas, as he witnesses scenes involving love (they couldn’t include a single same-gender couple?), war, religion, nature, man’s inhumanity to man, and so on. However, Jonas and the Giver must proceed cautiously considering the terrible fate met by Rosemary (Taylor Swift), the previous Receiver. As the past is revealed to Jonas, and begins to color his world, so to speak, he finds himself in an unexpected position of power. It’s a given, if you will, that “Hunger Games” and “Divergent” fans will receive “The Giver” with open arms. Also, having a hot guy such

as Thwaites as the lead character gives teen girls and gay guys something to look at while taking in the story, and all of its political and social implications, and the action. The late Robin Williams was a gifted comedic and dramatic actor. Sadly, you’d never know that by watching “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn” (Lionsgate), now on DVD + Digital, one of Williams’ final films before his untimely passing. Told via dismal voiceovers by the titular character Henry (Williams) and a doctor

named Sharon (Mila Kunis), as well as inferior flashback sequences, “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn” is essentially about what one man thinks are his final 90 minutes alive before a brain aneurysm kills him. This movie is so awful that you might envy Henry’s plight. The supporting cast, including Melissa Leo as Henry’s estranged wife Bette, Hamish Linklater as his estranged son Tommy, Peter Dinklage as his brother Aaron, Louis C.K. as his M.I.A. doctor, James Earl Jones as an electronics store clerk (in a shockingly offensive scene involving stuttering) and Richard Kind as estranged

classmate Bix is utterly wasted. Director Phil Alden Robinson (“Field of Dreams”) ought to be ashamed. Not only is “The Angriest Man in Brooklyn” not in the least bit entertaining or amusing, it’s also shockingly prescient. Henry’s tombstone reads 1951-2014, the same lifespan as Williams. Following his prognosis, Henry is suicidal and even attempts to take his own life by jumping off of a bridge. The equation for comedy is supposed to be tragedy + time. There will never be enough time passing to make this bomb palatable.

TRAVEL
Staycations by
Rick kaRlin
o
There are times when you just want to get away from it all, but don’t have the time to plan a vacation. That’s when it’s time for a “stayacation,” acting like a tourist in your own city. Luckily you live in a city where there are tons of resorts, making it easy to get away from it all without ever leaving town. Book a room (hell go for a suite, you don’t have any travel expenses) and enjoy your hometown like a tourist. Take in a show at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, Living Arts Theater or
the “Summer Shorts” short play festival from Island City Stage. Wander down Las Olas, eat at restaurants you’ve never tried and generally just act like a tourist (hopefully you’ll drive better than they do). The Grand Resort and Spa (539 N. Birch Rd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-630-3000) is the area’s largest gay owned and operated men’s resort hotel. Located just steps from the beach, it rivals the luxury and style found in most popular boutique hotels. If you’re looking for a staycation where you can be pampered, the staff at The Grand pays close personal attention to guests’ desires and is available 24/7. Many guests liken the attention to that one might expect at small guesthouses. The personal service has

Love Your Body, Love Yourself by Tom
FITNESS

Over the past decade as a fitness columnist, I have addressed a wide variety of issues from how to get bigger biceps, to what you need to eat to fuel monster workouts. It’s great to know that exercise and the fitness lifestyle are still topics that people care about. Yet along with the need to achieve healthier bodies, I have seen a disturbing trend among many guys which manifests itself in a sort of obsessive/compulsive desire to achieve “perfect bodies” at any price. Many psychologists refer to this as “body dysmorphic disorder” or “The Adonis complex.” Body dysmorphic disorder is a mental condition that first reared its’ head with the rise of the body building community some three decades ago. The disorder has spread to the general population as the media constantly bombards us with bigger, leaner, more muscular images of the perfect male and female physiques. These often unrealistic and unattainable ideals are held up as the standards of perfection against which we measure ourselves. Victims of body dysmorphia, no matter how hard they work, are convinced that they will never be as big or important as their super hero role models. These people often resort to unhealthy behaviors like excessive and dangerous over-training, the use of anabolic performance enhancing drugs, and eating disorders, to name but a few. In our Gay community, body dysmorphic disorder is no less prevalent than in the general population. I have always expected that Gay men would be more sensitive, more accepting of themselves and others considering all we’ve been through. Yet the pursuit of the perfect body at all costs is just as disturbing. Images of youthful, perfect muscular young bodies are used to sell everything from vacation rentals to new tires for your car. Many ordinary Gay men are made to fell insignificant and left out! Most men spend about 40 minutes a day share with us on guymag.net
on grooming, diet, etc. In contrast, guys with body dysmorphia report spending up to five hours a day pondering these same issues. This excessive preoccupation with body image often causes guys to miss work, social opportunities and other obligations. And the exasperating conclusion to Photo by Paha all this is that they are still miserable and dissatisfied with their physiques. In their book, “The Adonis Complex,” Harrison G. Pope Jr., Katharine A. Phillips and Robert Olivardia (Touchstone, $20.95) reveal the often hidden signs and symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder. • Weight lifting and exercise compulsions: Working out is a healthy pursuit, but when the quest for the perfect muscular physique becomes such a single minded pursuit that you sacrifice relationships and career goals, you are in trouble. • Obsessive/compulsive behavior: Unlike healthy guys, those with body image problems obsessively try to fix flaws that others don’t notice or don’t exist. Depression and low self-esteem are the results. • Eating Disorders: Millions of guys suffer from compulsive eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa which can result in serious health problems. Countless others with milder forms of eating disorders diet and whine about being fat even when they clearly are not. • Steroid Abuse: In an attempt to look like the latest movie action hero, millions of men – including teenagers – are abusing steroids. A great body is an asset. But you are not just a body, you are a human being entitled to a long and healthy life filled with fine friends and great experiences. If you are shackled by a poor body image, then do some reading, engage in some serious reevaluation, and if necessary, seek professional counseling. Questions? Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.
