THE WEEK Slash (Courstesy of Slash.com)

Drake, Lil’ Wayne and Flamenco Festival BY

PATRICK ROBERTS

_________________ _________________ Thursday

8/28

Centralia o “Centralia” focuses on the strange, true tale of an underground coal fire that ruined the eponymous Pennsylvanian town and has continued burning to this very day. Mad Cat Theatre Company imagines what would happen if the last four residents of this beleaguered town went on the road to share their story. A mixture of monologues, dramatic reenactments, musical numbers, and interpretive dance convey this story both humorously and with heart. The play runs through August 31st. 8:00 p.m. Miami Theater Center. 9806 NE Second Ave. Miami Shores. 33138.

Slash with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators Slash is the former lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, maybe best remembered for both his iconic hair and narrowly (if languidly) missing an oncoming train in the “November Rain” video. In the mid2000s, he co-founded rock ‘n’ roll band Velvet Revolver, reestablishing his place in contemporary music. His most recent project, “Apocalyptic Love,” includes Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators. Album singles include “You’re a Lie,” “No More Heroes,” “Bad Rain,” and “Not for Me.” Tonight Slash brings the long hair, the sublime guitar playing, and the hard rock. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. THE WEEK The Lox When Biggie Smalls died, the hip-hop community was left grieving, having lost one of their major artists. Yonkers based hip-hop trio The Lox eased some of that pain with their 1997 single “We’ll Always Love Big Poppa.” That single went multi-platinum, allowing them enough celebrity to work with larger names, such as Sean “Puffy” Combs and Mariah Carey. Their career resurged last year when they released successful EP, “The Trinity.” Tonight, they play their classic rap music at Grand Central. 10:00 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N. Miami Ave. Miami. 33136.

Pepper Mashay Free Concert Pepper Mashay began her career singing backup vocals in the Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” From there, she landed a recording contract and released a slew of hit dance tracks, including “Something to Feel,” “Happiness,” “Sextacy,” and “Send Me an Angel.” She may be best remembered in the gay world as the voice behind the infamous chant “Let’s get soaking wet!” throughout Betty Harris’ track “Dive in the Pool.” Tonight, Rumors offers a chance to view Pepper Mashay live during their free concert. Guests who purchase a VIP ticket may also meet the performer. A Daisy Deadpetals show precedes and follows the performance. 11:45 p.m. Rumors. 2426 Wilton Drive. Wilton Manors. 33305.

Festival of Flamenco Song The 9th annual Festival of Flamenco Song includes a host of gypsy-inspired singers and dancers. Paco del Pozo, the master of flamenco music, makes his Miami debut at the festival. Joining him will be earthy, passionate, pure-gypsy singer Ismaul de la Rosa. Principal dancer and choreographer of the Maria Pages Flamenco Dance Company, Jose Barrios, will headline the strong offering of dance. The finishing touch to the festival is the great flamenco guitarists, all from Spain, Paco Fernandez, Paco Fonta, and Jose Luis Rodriguez. 8:00 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

16th Annual Black Party Gary Santis returns with our favorite party of the year at the Manor. It just wouldn’t be a Labor Day celebration unless you don your fetish or sexy black wear and dance yourself silly to the music of David Knapp, with host Kitty Meow. This year’s theme is Erotic Carnival, so that leaves you plenty of creative freedom. No cover before 11 p.m. $10 between 11 p.m. and midnight; $15 thereafter, so time your arrival with as much care as your outfit. 10 p.m.-4 a.m. Manor Complex, 2345 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Labor Day Pride Tea Cruise Labor Day usually heralds the beginning of a new school year, celebrates the American workforce movement, and allows an extra day off for Americans to appreciate their freedom. The Sunday before Labor Day is a great time to party late, and the monthly gay tea cruise gives just that opportunity. Taking place on the day before Labor Day, this month’s cruise celebrates America’s workforce. Boarding begins at 6:30 p.m. and sails around the Intercostal until 10:00 p.m. Entertainment includes host Kitty Meow, performer Deja Devonier, and DJ Greyson Jubilee. Also appearing are dancers from Johnny’s and Boardwalk. 6:30 p.m. Smoker’s Park. 540 S.E. 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33301.

Drake and Lil’ Wayne Before his big break, Drake spent much of his time filming the Canadian hit series “Degrassi: The Next Generation.” His tenure as physically disabled teenager Jimmy Brooks lasted for 138 episodes. In 2010, his life changed even more drastically—his first album, “Thank Me Later,” sold the most single copies in one week. Lil’ Wayne’s life has taken a different route than Drake’s. Born in New Orleans, Lil’ Wayne began his rap career when he was only nine, signing with Cash Money Records. His career took off in 2004 with the release of “The Carter.” Since then, even Barack Obama has stated his fondness for the rapper’s music. Drake and Lil’ Wayne exchange disses and beats tonight at the Cruzan Amphitheatre. 7:00 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sanburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.

SCREEN SAVOR

Skin Flicks by

GreGG Shapiro

o

Erotic sci-fi mood piece “Under The Skin” (A24/Lionsgate) could sure use subtitles. That’s only when there’s dialogue, of which there is a minimum, mainly spoken in thick Scottish brogues. An alien being arrives in Scotland and assumes the visage of Scarlett Johansson. After putting on a dead woman’s clothes, she hits the mall for a new wardrobe and some cosmetics. She then proceeds to drive around town, observing human behavior. What she’s really there for is to pick up single men with no families, bring them to her place and lure them into a black pool where they are transformed into a kind of extra-terrestrial sustenance. She also keeps herself busy witnessing a seaside drowning, trying to eat human food (layer cake is a definite “no”), and burning up as much fossil fuel as she can. However, an encounter with a disfigured man has an unexpected impact on her. To her dismay, she also finds herself being transformed, becoming, dare it be said, human. When she finally does have sex, Homo sapien-style, it doesn’t go that well. Occasionally, visually interesting, the special effects, what little there are of them, are cool enough to make us want to see more. Mostly, they are listless and mannered, an excuse for some to see Johansson in various states of undress. DVD special features include a “making of” featurette. Subtitled “the Go Doc Project,” “Getting Go” (Wolfe/Speak), Cory Krueckeberg’s directorial debut, follows Doc’s (Tanner Cohen, a long way from “Were The World Mine”) journey from small town boy in the city to radicalized homo in the country. Shortly before college graduation in NYC and relocation to Iowa for grad school, obsessive, and somewhat anti-social, Doc takes a chance and reaches out to Go (stripper-turned-actor Matthew Camp), a “dancer of the go-go variety” with a “corn-fed epic ass,” on the pretense that he is making, well, a doc about the NYC nightlife scene. Usually content with his online sex life

(including jerking off on his webcam and surfing Internet porn), Doc’s “profound” and “serious crush” on Go leads him outside of his comfort zone. After drunk posting an email to Go proposing his project, and getting a reply in the affirmative, Doc meets “New York’s finest boy on the box” for some preliminary details. Go agrees to do it for 5% of the profits and the interview and filming process begins. Basically using his iPhone to film Go in his apartment, where his artwork and tattoo supplies are on display, Doc attempts to finding a story in Go’s story, but it’s all pretty flimsy. Naturally, there is sexual tension, leading to theguymag

sex, the beginnings of a relationship, a trip to Fire Island, discussions of queer culture, and the inevitable--Doc catches Go having sex with someone else. In between, there are clever Warhol homages (including his “Eating” and “Kiss”) and provocative comments on the state of gay relationships. By the time Go turns the camera on Doc, you know the end is near. “Getting Go” is at turns sweet, silly and sexy (if a bit overly long), and definitely entertaining. DVD special features include an interview with Krueckeberg, a Matthew Camp slideshow and more. In French with subtitles, “Man At Bath” share with us on guymag.net

(Canteen Outlaws) stars tattoo-scalped gay porn-star Francois Sagat as Emmanuel, a narcissistic hustler who thinks nothing of raping filmmaker boyfriend Omar (Omar Ben Sellem) before he leaves on a trip to NYC to attend a film fest. As he departs, Omar asks Emmanuel to move out of the apartment. What follows is a series of flashbacks of happier times combined with each man’s experiences in their present day situations that are alternately humorous, erotic and emotional. Watch for gay writer Dennis Cooper as the guys’ offbalance neighbor Robin. DVD contains no bonus material. theguymag

Also Sept. 27 is National Public Lands Day, so there will be no entry fees charged at Volcanoes National Park or Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. San Diego has perfect weather nearly all year, but is warmest in the fall, making it the perfect time to try your hand at surfing. Is it any coincidence that Black’s Beach, at the southern end of Torrey Pines State Beach, is home to the best surfing and the nude beach? The award winning La Jolla Playhouse (2910 La Jolla Village Dr., 858-550-1070) stages the world premiere of “Kingdom City,” from Sept. 4-Oct.5.The South Bay Pride Art & Music Festival is on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the J Street Marina in the Bayfront Park (550 Marina Pkwy.). In the fall Manhattan is so beautiful, it inspired a classic lyric, “Autumn in New York. Why does it seem so inviting? Autumn in New York, it spells the thrill of first-nighting.” With the tourists and snot-nosed kids gone, enjoy quick access to museums and tourist attractions without long lines. You may be able to snap up a pair of seats to Broadway’s hottest plays.

Shows generating buzz include the revival of “On The Town,” which begins previews Sept.20 at the Lyric Theatre (213 W. 42nd Street, 212-556-4750). “It’s Only A Play,” Terrence McNally’s latest comedy starring Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullaly, F. Murray Abraham, Stockard Channing and Rupert Grint should be in previews through early October at the Schoenfeld Theatre (236 W. 45th St., 212-239-6200). “The Last Ship” marks Sting’s first foray onto Broadway as a composer. Its first preview is scheduled for Sept. 30 at the Neil Simon Theater (250 W. 52nd St., 212-757-8646.) New York is also a foodies’ paradise, so check out the 10th annual Vendy Awards on Saturday Sept. 13 at Governors Island. Dubbed the “Oscars of Street Food,” the Vendy Awards festival is an intense cook-off between the city’s top sidewalk vendors. The $95 ticket includes a sampling of the best dishes from more than 25 food vendors, along with all-you-can drink Brooklyn Beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages from GuS Sodas. For more information, go to http://www.vendyawards. streetvendor.org/.

FITNESS

10 Reasons Why You Need Supplements by Tom

bonanTi

o

You workout hard, do your cardio, and watch your nutrition to the last calorie and gram of protein, but you still can’t seem to make the gains you desire. Perhaps your stamina is lacking, or you just can’t put on muscle despite all of your hard work. Don’t despair, you’re on the right track, all you may need is the right supplementation. In this area there are countless self-appointed gurus – the muscle magazines, pro – bodybuilders and the hot muscle man in the nutrition store with the great guns – but few possess the knowledge and the expertise needed to guide you to healthy, successful results. Remember, just because the ad for some pill, powder or goop has some hot muscle guy promoting it, doesn’t mean that it is safe or effective for you, or that it even works at all for anyone! When seeking advice on any supplementation program always consult your physician first. State certified nutritionists and certified personal trainers can be great resources for knowledge as well, but only after you’ve checked things out with your doctor. The internet can also prove to be helpful, but make sure to check out your sources. While I can’t tell you exactly what supplements to take, I can give you some pretty good reasons why you may need to supplement. 1. Poor Digestion. Even when food intake is adequate, inefficient digestion can limit your body’s uptake of vitamins. Chew your food properly and don’t eat so fast. 2. Alcohol. Drinking too much greatly affects availability, absorption and metabolism of nutrients, thus the need for supplements. You can train like a Spartan all week, but one weekend of bad eating and excessive drinking can set you back unless you fortify yourself with the right combo of rest and supplementation. 3. Smoking. Smoking is also an irritant to the digestive tract and increases the metabolism requirements for B group vitamins as well as

vitamins A and C. 4. Processed Foods. Foods that are frozen, over-cooked and over processed may be lacking in vital minerals and vitamins commonly found in fresh, natural foods. Junk foods and fast foods are the main culprits here. 5. Antibiotics. Some antibiotics, although valuable in fighting infections also fight off friendly bacteria in your gut, which normally allow B-group vitamins to be absorbed through the intestinal walls. 6. Stress. Chemical, physical and emotional stress can increase the body’s requirements for vitamins B and C. Air pollution increases the requirements for Vitamin E. Stress can wear you down and kill you if you don’t fight it with rest, good nutrition and supplementation. 7. Bad Eating Habits. Not eating enough throughout the day, binging on one big meal late in the day, yo-yo dieting and countless other bad habits can result in more body fat, poor metabolism and myriads of other health problems. 8. Aging. Like it or not, you are getting older. Admit your age and the fact that your diet and exercise regime need to change as your body ages and changes. 9. Bio-Individuality. There are wide fluctuations in individual nutrient requirements among people depending upon age, gender, weight, type of occupation, etc.. 10. Working Out. Your workouts affect your need for protein as well as for the B-group of vitamins, Vitamin C and iron. Contact Tom Bonanti with your workout questions at trainertomb@aol.com .
