of Love at the same time have this extraordinary confidence about who they are. That, for example, was not true of any of my central characters previously. They were not people who knew themselves. Ben and George in a way reflect me because I feel like that that’s where I situate myself. Not that I know everything about myself, but I’m comfortable with who I am in a way that is new. I also hope that I aspire to the kind of passion for life and creativity that Ben has that was inspired for me by a man I knew named Ted Rust. He was a sculptor who died at the age of 99. He was my great-uncle’s partner for 42 years in Memphis. At 98 he was working on his last piece, which was of a young teenager with a backpack. That piece remains unfinished, but he was working on it until nearly the last day of his life. To me, that’s beautiful. GS: That also echoes with the unfinished painting of Vlad in the film. IS: Exactly! There were a couple of things that were influential in the writing of the script. One was the piece that Ted never finished. The other was a case in the Midwest where a man, a choir director for a Catholic high school married his partner and was fired as a result. I take things from real life and try to craft them into something different, something cinematic. GS: I’m glad you mentioned that firing, Ira, because as recently as late July of this year (2014), a music director at a Catholic church in a Chicago suburb was fired for posting something on Facebook about his upcoming wedding to his male partner. It’s an event that echoes, as you said, in “Love Is Strange” when George is fired from the Catholic school where he works. When do you think this will stop being a story that makes the headlines? IS: I was actually in Chicago a few nights ago and the couple who you are speaking of came to the movie. I spent quite a bit of time talking to them afterwards. They were really great men and I enjoyed it a lot. We share with us on guymag.net
were screening a film that mirrored their own experience so much, that the timing was surprising. One thing that I will say about that case that I think is so beautiful in some ways, or at least makes it a larger picture, is this couple went off to Rome. They got engaged and announced it on Facebook. One of them came home and was fired from his job as a choir director at a Catholic school. The other is a Latin teacher for a public high school in Chicago and he came home and all of his students had decorated his classroom with balloons and streamers in celebration. After the man had been fired, there was a town-hall meeting and 700 people showed up. I think civil rights are paved by these incidents that both contain the negative and the positive. They become movements forward even if personally they become challenges in real ways. But they define a changing time. GS: John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, as Ben and George, respectively, are both exceptional in the film. Alfred previously played gay in “Prick Up Your Ears” and John played a trans character in “The World According To Garp.” IS: I would say that none of us approached these roles as “playing gay.” That doesn’t really fit to the characters that they portray. Sexuality and homosexuality and being gay is certainly a part of who they are, but it’s only one of the many adjectives. I think that that’s significant. I don’t think in our lives these days we make quite the separations that we used to in terms of thinking that any one single adjective can define us. I would then say, we’re not so progressive. Read Proust. I think the artist’s job is to make a complex portrait of a human being. GS: On the same token, gay actors are also a presence in the film, including Cheyenne Jackson as Ben and George’s neighbor Ted and Jason Stuart as the wedding officiant. As a gay filmmaker, how important is it for you to have queer performers in your films?

Portrait FILM
IS: Yes, it is. I think to deny that there are limitations set on people who are open with their sexuality would be false. Those are not limitations that I want to embrace. I believe that there is a need for creation of subcultures. At the same time, as an artist, that’s not my modus operandi. I’m trying to create portraits of the world as full as possible. Also, my other gig is that I run two arts programs here in New York – Queer Arts Film and Queer Art Mentorship, which are both focused on creating opportunities for openly queer creators, opportunities that are not given by the culture at large. There’s so little economic support that sometimes embracing one’s marginality is empowering.
GS: Two of the actors in the film, Darren Burrows who plays Ben’s nephew Elliot and John Cullum who plays Father Raymond, are former “Northern Exposure” cast members. Was that just coincidental? IS: It was coincidental. I worked with Darren on a film called “Forty Shades of Blue.” He was the male lead with Rip Torn. After I cast Marisa (Tomei as Kate), she saw the film and she was the one who recommended that I cast Darren. I love working with him. He’s an extraordinarily natural performer and he fit right in to this world. To me, what is more significant about John Cullum is not the “Northern Exposure” history, but John Cullum, Adriane Lenox (who plays the principal) and I are all from Memphis, Tennessee. That also was a coincidence, but a nice one. GS: As in “Keep The Lights On,” visual art once again plays an important role in one of your films, with Ben being a painter. Of course, your husband Boris Torres is also a painter. Are any of the paintings in the film done by Boris? IS: Boris painted the work of Ben, the kind of central paintings, the hero paintings that were going to define his talent. He and John worked together for a couple of days in Boris’ studio. John is actually a

painter, but he’s more of a Saturday morning painter. But he has the skills to make it very authentic in the story. We also looked at artists in New York who we loved, who were exceptional, who were not famous necessarily in the broader culture. Artists such as Fairfield Porter and Alice Neel who is a portrait painter that Boris and I love. I think the kind of quiet focus that an artist can have on their own work is empowering. There’s some sort of pride in that that I think is wonderful. The film honors the individual as best it can. I think that’s where the title, “Love Is Strange,” comes from. That for each of us, love, in whatever form it takes, is unique. GS: “Love Is Strange” is getting a warm reception from critics, recently theguymag

of Love
receiving an “A” from “Entertainment Weekly,” and the Oscar buzz has been consistent for the film. What does all of this mean to you? IS: It means people are liking the movie. It means people are responding to it emotionally and that they are enjoying it. This is why people praise a film, because they liked watching it. I’m glad I’m not going backwards in terms of my skills and my voice. I look to someone like Ben, and maybe even more now, someone like John Lithgow, who at 69 has taken on “King Lear.” Next spring, he’s going to be in Edward Albee’s “A Delicate Balance” on Broadway. He’s at one of the primes of his life as an artist, which seems to me wonderful and something to aspire to. share with us on guymag.net
GS: Finally, Ira, as I asked you the last time we spoke, have you started working on or thinking about your next film? IS: Yes, I’m glad to say. Hopefully we’ll be here in two years having this conversation about the next film. Mauricio Zacharias, my co-writer, and I are writing the third of what we consider a trilogy of New York stories. This one is about two boys, 10 and 11, who become best friends, and for various reasons, they take an oath of silence and they stop speaking to their families. It’s a film about relationships and intimacy, gay identity, within the context of modern times. It’s also, once again, about real estate, because it hinges on an eviction. I’m trying to start a new genre, which is the New York real estate movie. theguymag

Square Dancing
Despite having to cancel recent concerts so that drummer Nathan Followill could recover from injuries sustained in a bus accident, Kings of Leon are still planning to perform their Southern rock tonight at the Cruzan Amphitheatre. Kings of Leon found critical and commercial success in the mid naughties with their album “Only by the Night” and acclaimed singles “Sex on Fire,” “Use Somebody,” and “Notion.” “Use Somebody” in particular garnered much accolades, including the prestigious Grammy for Record of the Year. Their most recent album “Mechanical Bull” was released in September of 2013. 7:00 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sansburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.
Some things never seem to age: Barbra Streisand, Liberace’s boyfriends, and the art of square dancing. Luckily, the Civic Center in Boynton Beach offers weekly square dancing lessons on Monday nights. For the ill-informed, square dancing is a type of dance in which four couples are arranged in a square. A caller prompts the dancers to perform certain sequences of steps. During the class, the dancers will learn the names of the different movements and attempt to perfect them. 7:30 p.m. Boynton Beach Civic Center. 138 E. Ocean Ave. Boynton Beach.

Weekly Nude Drawing In honor of their one year anniversary, the Men’s Life Drawing Event has undergone two major changes: it has moved locations to Fat Village, and it’s now weekly. At the new location, two models will be posing simultaneously—one for long poses and one for gesture and short poses. The artists are able to move from one studio to the other. Each studio is fully equipped with professional easels and drawing boards. All levels are welcome. Bring art supplies for drawing, painting, charcoal, pencil, or even watercolor. Guest artists from the community will also be in attendance. 3 p.m. Push Fitness. 1098 NE 45th Street. Oakland Park. 33334.

Cheese-A-Rama
This hilarious duo from the heyday of “Saturday Night Live” will have “A Very Stupid Conversation” in which they take questions from the crowd, sing, banter, and even play the banjo. Steve Martin began his career writing for “The Smother’s Brother Comedy Hour” before becoming a stand-up sensation in the late 1970s. Martin Short, on the other hand, began working for the famous theatre company Second City before his popular stint on “Saturday Night Live.” The two worked on the cult favorite “The Three Amigos” together back in the 1980s. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Concurrence: Works by Austin Ballard and Kathleen Thum Both Austin Ballard and Kathleen Thum explore the complex systems of macro- and microcosms. Their works share a delicacy and monumentality. Austin is a sculptor who creates abstract works utilizing an amalgam of different materials (including chairs, tables, and branches). Kathleen, on the other hand, uses the traditional painting and drawing medium. Her works are a hybrid of various human physiological systems and man-made manufacturing systems. 9:00 a.m. Broward College Central Campus. 3501 Davie Rd. Davie. 33314.

SCREEN SAVOR
(Un)American Horror Stories by
GreGG Shapiro
o
“Only Lovers Left Alive” (Sony Pictures Classics) looks and sounds like what you’d expect a contemporary Jim Jarmusch vampire movie to look and sound like; lots of interesting music and artfully shot scenes. If only it wasn’t so sluggish and overly long. Cleverly named ageless British vampires Adam (Tom Huddleston) and Eve (Tilda Swinton) have been married forever. There’s a photo of them, from their third wedding in
1868, which Eve admires. Like some longmarried couples (see Dolly Parton and Carl Dean), Adam and Eve live in separate quarters in separate countries. Fittingly, he’s living in a ghost town called Detroit populated by young humans he refers to as zombies. She’s living in Tangier where she hangs out with Christopher Marlowe (John Hurt). Yes, that Christopher Marlowe. Feeding on humans is passé in this day and

age, so Marlowe supplies Eve with blood from a French pharmacist connection (a French connection, if you will). Adam gets his from Dr. Watson (Jeffrey Wright) at a hospital. Adam also pursues his music-making passion, paying cash for classic guitars brought to him by Ian (Anton Yelchin). As in all things vampire, a series of changes are afoot. Adam and Eve arrange a rendezvous in Detroit, and just in time, too, since Adam has asked Ian to have wooden bullet (with a brass casing) made for him. Suicidal much? Jarmusch’s modern vamp romp comes off as a cautionary drug tale, and Swinton and Hurt are especially addictive.
“The Quiet Ones” (Lionsgate) is a noisy and unnecessary semi-horror tale inspired by true events in the mid-1970s. Rogue Oxford University prod Joseph (an unwatchable Jared Harris) is obsessed with harnessing the negative energy of psychotic patient Jane (Olivia Cooke), even more so after he loses his funding. Recruiting two students--Harry (Rory Fleck-Byrne) and Krissi (Erin Richards), as well as non-student cameraman Brian (Sam Claflin) to assist in his questionable research, Joseph proceeds undeterred. With casual references to mass-murder, demonic possession and the occult, the hokey “The Quiet” Ones is the kind of horror show that sets the genre back years. Not even gazing at Claflin (Finnick from “The Hunger Games”) can make “The Quiet Ones” worth your time. DVD + Digital Ultraviolet special features include deleted scenes, outtakes, audio commentary and more. Lesbians longing for a 21st century “Claire of the Moon” need look no further than Marina Rice Bader’s noxious “Anatomy of a Love Seen” (Soul Kiss). From the effed-up play on words of the title to the insipid dialogue and plot, it’s hard not to think – “Please let this be an elaborate hoax” – while watching this lascivious lesbian loathe story. Actresses Zoe (Sharon Hinnendael) and Mal (Jill Evyn) have endured immeasurable pain and suffering while filming a love story as Ellie and Jordan for director Kara (Bader). Over the course of making the movie, they fell in and out of love, threatening the entire production. Kara gets the ex-lovebirds to return to the set on the pretense of finishing filming a crucial love scene. The combination of the woo-woo prayers of Kara’s new-age zombie assistant Anne (Constance Brenneman), the actor-speak, the tears and hyperventilating, the saccharine score, and the rote recovery recitations, this “Love” not only dare not utter its name, it doesn’t deserve to be “Seen.” Consider this review an open letter to director Marina Rice Bader to simply say, we already have one Nicole Conn, we don’t need another. For the love of lesbians, please stop immediately! (“Anatomy of a Love Story” is available for viewing on demand at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/anatomyofaloveseen.)

TRAVEL
Barcelona, Spain Lose Your Heart and Your Way By RoBeRt elias Deaton
o
It’s not often you arrive in a city hoping to get lost. But such is the charm of Barcelona that the twisting streets, the amazing architecture, and the overtly friendly people beckon you to wander and discover unexpected treasures around nearly every corner. Since often the locals will be just as lost

as you are, it’s little wonder that Barcelona is a city that doesn’t run on a strict timetable. Everything skews late here, including dinner, which is typically eaten around 10 p.m.—most likely because it will take you that long to find your restaurant of choice. But we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves here.

Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain. It stretches along the Mediterranean Coast between the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and is best known for its architecture, much of which was designed by Antonio Gaudí, whose most famous design, the Sagrada Família (Calle Mallorca 401), dominates the city as its most visited tourist destination. Begun in 1882, the project was placed in Gaudi’s hands a year later, and construction on the Catholic Church continues to this day. Estimates are that it is a little over half finished, with a new completion date estimated to be 2026—the hundredth anniversary of Gaudí’s death. Gaudí’s trademark colorfully tiled, curved
share with us on guymag.net
and vaulted designs inspired by nature are found everywhere in Barcelona—from the lampposts in the touristy Plaça Reial (Barri Gòtic) to the outstanding Park Güell ( Gràcia district), a massive garden that overlooks the city and is home to the Gaudí Museum. These designs are as fascinating as the Catalonian people who occupy the city, beautiful and bronzed with a laid-back attitude that charms with its vulnerability. Fly to Barcelona in non-stop ease on American Airlines, which offers daily non-stop service from Miami International Airport for $1,150. Travel from Fort Lauderdale is a bit less expensive on U.S. Air ($1,086), but requires a stop in Philadelphia with an hour-anda-half layover. The main throughfare through town is called Las Ramblas. The highway runs from the port dissecting Barcelona and ending right before L’Eixample, the gay area of town. Las Ramblas is THE place to people watch, and it’s full of street performers whose talents range from the absurd to athletes whose next stop is Cirque du Soleil. It’s a pedestrian walkway that is not only packed with people (mostly tourists) but also souvenir shops, bird aviaries, markets, flower kiosks and cafes. It is also the home of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, one of the foremost opera houses in the world. The theatre holds an audience of over 2,000, with the official season running from October through July. The Liceu has burned down twice since its original construction in 1847, but the front façade is the original, and tours are given daily at 10 a.m. and well worth exploring even if opera isn’t your thing. When staying in Barcelona, you may be tempted to stay at the Axel Hotel Barcelona (Carrer Aribau 33). While is it part of the gayowned chain of hotels, this particular branch (the original) has pathetically slow Internet service, lackluster housekeeping, and mediocre breakfast. At $200+ per night, you can do better for less. Just down the street is the Cram Hotel (Carrer Aribau 54), with sophisticated elegance, a trendy lounge bar, rooftop pool, and the Michelin-rated Gaig Restaurant for the finest Catalan cuisine. All rooms at the Cram feature bedside controlled lighting system and free wifi Internet access. The best news is the location: just around the corner from the busiest gay clubs in the city. theguymag

Warming Up— Foreplay to a Better Workout! by Tom
FITNESS
bonanTi
o
General warming up refers to any physical activity that jacks up muscle and body temperature. A general warmup is essential to every workout in the gym. Examples of whole body general warm-ups are light jogging, calisthenics, jumping rope and riding a stationary bike. Usually a slight increase in muscle and body temperature can be achieved by any one of these activities in five to seven minutes prior to a workout or sporting activity. Warming up also affords you the opportunity to get psyched up mentally for the challenge ahead as you loosen up muscles and joints. A specific warm up involves movements that are similar to what you will be doing (golfing, bowling, martial arts, running a marathon, etc.), but at much lower intensity level. This not only increases muscle and body temperature, but also provides a rehearsal of the actual event, which may improve your performance. For example, in the gym, if you are preparing to do bench presses with your buddies, do some light weight dumbbell bench presses before loading up the bar with monster weight. Typically, one to three sets of 10 – 15 reps using a light to moderate weight should be sufficient; more advanced gym rats may have to warm up longer and more intensely to achieve an optimal body temperature. A few wind sprints would provide you with an excellent warm-up for a marathon run, I think you get the over-all idea. The theoretical purposes of warm up exercises include increased muscle temperature, improved metabolic adjustment to heavy work and greater number of capillaries opened in the muscles. Warming up also helps rev up your metabolism to burn more calories more efficiently. There are several psychological factors created by warm-ups. Skilled performance improves with brief warm up activities identical or directly related to the sport. Warming up also helps you to rid yourself of distractions and clear your mind as you focus upon the tasks ahead. There is however one potentially negative effect of warm ups: if your warm up is too long or too intense you can fatigue and your performance share with us on guymag.net
may suck! So don’t overdo your warming up session. Generally speaking, a moderate 10-minute generalized warm-up is great for a weight training session. A longer and more specific warm-up, say 20 minutes, is preferred for a specific athletic event like golf, tennis or a marathon run. What about stretching? Stretching is another important preparatory activity used to improve flexibility and physical performance. Flexibility is defined as the range of motion possible around a specific joint. In weight training, a lack of flexibility can lead to injuries including muscle strains and sprains. After warming up, perform three reps of at least one static stretch for each major muscle group you will be training. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds at a point of mild discomfort. Never bounce on a stretch and make sure to breathe out on each stretch. More extensive stretching is typically more beneficial during the workout between sets or muscle groups that you are training. Remember, a five to ten minute warm up along with a few light stretches can heat up your body and muscles and unleash the lion inside of you. Like good, hot foreplay, warming up is just what you need to prepare for the dynamite session that awaits you. Contact Tom Bonanti with your workout questions at trainertomb@aol.com .
