o

Still, the first Gay Games throbbed with impact. Founded in 1982 by former (Straight) Olympic decathlete Dr. Tom Waddell – though he was bisexual – they served dual purposes. They showed

Gay Games 9 took Cleveland by storm last month. Oh, and Akron too. Hold your Snickers. Cleveland (and Akron) may not be San Francisco, Vancouver, New York, Amsterdam, Sydney, Chicago or Cologne – previous hosts of what would have been called the “Gay Olympics” had the Straight Olympics not gotten their panties in a bunch three decades ago. So “Gay Olympics” was out, even though the Straight Olympics folks had no problem with other Olympics names, like the Rat Olympics.

THE OUTFIELD the world that athletes come in all sizes, shapes and sexualities (competition is open to all, regardless of sexual orientation, and there are no qualifying standards). The Gay Games also promote personal growth. For countless men and women, the opportunity to compete with and against other LGBT people – because, face it, not a lot of straight folks are going to be there, whether it’s called the Gay Olympics, Gay Games or Gay Anything Else – marked a turning point in their lives. Some came out simply by traveling to the event. Others were inspired to come out while there. By forming a community around two previously disparate concepts – “gay” and “sport” – the Gay Games represent a transcendent moment in our history and culture. You may be forgiven for thinking that the 2014 Gay Games did not have the impact – or generate the publicity – of previous ones. In a year in which media attention has been lavished on Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team (Will he make the St. Louis Rams squad? What was his first workout like? What was post-workout shower like?); former player Billy Bean’s hiring as Major League Baseball’s first “ambassador for inclusion”; and MLB’s belated, posthumous recognition of Glenn Burke’s contribution to the sport (the semi-closeted outfielder’s family was invited to the All-Star game in Minneapolis, where his sad life story was recalled, along with his invention of the high five – who knew?), this year’s Gay Games have seemed like an afterthought. Or, worse, an anachronism. (And if you think Cleveland hasn’t gotten much attention, what about poor Akron? They’re an official host city too.) The situation is a bit different on the shores of Lake Erie. An intriguing array of sponsors signed up. A look at the list shows that a broad swath of society is now willing to put substantial money where their mouths are, in support of diversity, inclusion and good, gay fun. (It should be noted that the Gay Games include not only sports but cultural and social activities: a play called “My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding,” a Big Bloody Mary Brunch, a tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and much more. Take that, Straight Olympics!). share with us on guymag.net

One “platinum” sponsor is the Eaton power management company; another is Marriott. Four of the “gold” sponsors are the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA basketball team, Coca-Cola, United Airlines and Wells Fargo Advisors. “Silver” sponsors include the Akron General Medical Center, GE Lighting and Cleveland Indians. On the “bronze” list: Jewish Federation of Cleveland, and the University of Toledo. Oh, yes: The United Church of Christ is a “silver” sponsor too. They’re the first religious denomination to sign on as a major sponsor of the Gay Games. They’re doing so, their website says, “to demonstrate the UCC commitment to inclusion, diversity, justice and human rights.” And even if the Gay Games hasn’t generated huge publicity outside Cleveland (and Akron), a marketing campaign from a local ad agency drew some attention. Created by Brokaw in collaboration with Kalman & Pabst Photo Group, it’s a series of fantastic sports photos. There’s a baseball player making a double play, a football player scoring a touchdown, a runner ready to burst out of the starting blocks. So far, so normal. But Brokaw came up with a powerful title for the campaign: “That’s So Gay.” “We felt that it was time to transform an ugly and ill-received phrase, and repurpose it into something that sheds a positive light on what these athletes work so hard to accomplish,” said Steve McKeown, Brokaw creative director. Then, tying “that’s so gay” in with something else often derided – the Cleveland and Akron metropolitan areas (I know, just check out this column) – McKeown added, “We know people in Northeast Ohio understand the significance of repurposing – as evident by the transformation of the region these last few years.” You can take the Gay Games out of New York, San Francisco and Amsterdam. Cleveland is happy to have them. Akron too. Dan Woog is a journalist, educator, soccer coach and gay activist. His latest book is “We Kick Balls: True Stories from the Youth Soccer Wars.” He can be reached care of this publication or at OutField@qsyndicate.com. theguymag

HEAR ME OUT

Barbra Streisand & Banks by

Chris AzzopArdi

BARBRA STREISAND, PARTNERS o Joined by a plethora of esteemed men on Partners, Barbra Streisand duets with one in particular who stands out above the rest: her gay son, Jason Gould. The two share Irving Berlin’s 1932 ballad “How Deep is the Ocean,” a good fit for a gay-son-and-mom moment (the two initially premiered the song in 2012 in Philly). It’s something truly special as their voices build in unison to a soaring climax. That innate dynamic doesn’t mean that the rest of her boys don’t bring it. Babyface lays down his creamy-as-caramel voice on “Evergreen,” making literal on the “one love that is shared by two” declaration; “New York State of Mind” with Billy Joel is spine-tingly (cute, too, as Babs ends the song by inviting Billy for a slice of NYC pizza); and when Josh Groban joins Streisand for “Somewhere,” it’s a match made in vocal heaven. You also can’t go wrong with Michael Bublé’s velvety croon on “It Had to Be You,” a winsome rendition so warm and fuzzy – and with a nice personal touch – you’ll wanna grab someone by the hand and dance in the streets. That romantic sentiment extends to “Love Me Tender,” where Babs resurrects Elvis Presley. Their virtual twosome is indicative of the overarching problem with Partners: It’s stuck in the past. (Its only departure, an unexpected duet with Blake Shelton, is as awkward as you’re imagining it to be right now). Instead of Lionel Richie, John Legend, Stevie Wonder and Andrea Bocelli, how about shaking it up, Babs? Give us a little grit (try Steven Tyler). More old meets new (Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars, perhaps?) Because as it stands, Partners, though obviously an impeccable vocal showcase, is too predictable to be anything more than redundant schmaltz. Grade: C+

Also Out

BANKS, GODDESS o Goddess, the larger-than-life title of Jillian Banks’ debut album, isn’t much of an understatement. Anyone who’s been following the 26-year-old’s steady rise to stardom since she released two EPs last year knows she’s destined to take that throne. Long before dropping this trance-y throng of brooding feels – sentiments draped atop a goth fusion of fuzz, keyboard punches and pulsating bass (think James Blake meets Feist) – everyone had their eye on this mysterious Los Angeles wunderkind. And for good reason. Goddess is a slow burner – but once it clicks, it consumes. Creeping up on you, “The Waiting Game” builds on a murmured vocal loop with a whirling synthesis of drone-y sounds. Just as you’re caught up in its hypnotic reverb, it ends abruptly. All of its air sucked out, you’re left as breathless as its coda. “Brain” is folk music from the future. Sexy and soulful, and with a shadowy aura that eventually owns every piece of your being, it inspires a fugue state. With inklings of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu present in Banks’ celestial, R&B-inspired singing, the album’s urban edge incites sophisticated simplicity and a lingering evocativeness. “Beggin for Thread,” for instance, is an example of how you do dark for the masses (in the age of Lorde, the song should already be a big hit). And with it, it’s clear Banks won’t have to do much begging. If you’re not already praising this Goddess, you will be. Grade: B+ theguymag

SPOON, THEY WANT MY SOUL o For the last 20 years, the fellas of Austin band Spoon have turned rock inside out. They’re at it again with their genre-busting eighth outing. A conduit for their hooky strums, offbeat quirks and spirited meanders, They Want My Soul harnesses the classic sensibility of the Stones and AC/DC, meandering with its own set of impulses and a no-rules mentality. “I Just Don’t Understand” jangles with guitar, eventually breaking into piano-bar mode, and “Outlier” dances around with an exhilarating spirit. They Want My Soul is newly released but already sounds like a classic. FKA TWIGS, LP1 o Don’t let FKA Twigs intimidate you. Pioneering R&B’s future with her progressive full-length debut, the English innovator turns the genre on its head with techie effects from the next generation. If that makes Twigs sound intense, it’s because she is. Listen to “Lights On” and try not to wander into space along with it. An anomaly set on an ambitious vision, using glitch, grime and her galaxy-reaching falsetto to work up a sexed-up fantasia, LP1 tests the outer limits in a way that forces you to stick around. A Test and Testimonials

“The Normal Heart” (Courtesy of HBO)

by

GreGG Shapiro

o

If you watch Brian Fender’s dick doc short “Dick: The Documentary” (Isotope) expecting to be aroused or to find some previously unexplored erotic portal, you’ll be as disappointed as that time you saw “Puppetry of the Penis.” Instead, approach it as an experience of enlightenment. Interviewees, described as “Craigslist subjects and participants,” spanning an age range from the 20s to the 70s, go through various stages of undress as the interview process progresses. They respond to questions about naming their penis, their first consciousness of having a penis, masturbation, erections, measurement, how their penis reflects on them as a person and, ultimately, loss of function. The faceless participants (faces are obscured when the camera comes in contact with them) run the gamut from gay to straight, cut to uncut, long to short, and pierced. One interview

52

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

subject describes the penis as “brilliant technology,” a statement that is hard to dispute. Some of the stories are difficult. Thirty-one year old Jeremiah, for instance, who is massively endowed, has a fit body and identifies as gay, tells of being molested by a man in a library. Tim, 49, who is considerably less endowed, is also gay and has been with his partner for 28 years. “Dick: The Documentary” is less a measure of a man than how a man takes measure of himself. The 48-minute “Dick: The Documentary” premieres Sept. 12 exclusively online, at IndiePixFilms.com/D**kDocumentary. “Test” (Wolfe), the second full-length feature by Chris Mason Johnson, delivers on the promise of his first film, 2008’s “The New Twenty.” “Test” is set in San Francisco in 1985, during what is considered to be the “early years of AIDS,” at the time of the development of the first blood test for the AIDS virus. Naïve but sexy Frankie (newcomer Scott theguymag

guymagtube

Frankie faces his various tests – filling in for a lead dancer on stage, taking the blood test, buying a pet mouse, and beginning a relationship with Todd. Whether or not they can pass the test of monogamy remains to be seen. DVD bonus features include deleted scenes, theatrical trailer and more.

Marlowe) is a new member of a San Francisco dance company. Someone who likes to play it safe, Frankie is the kind of person shocked by anti-gay graffiti or when Todd (out actor Matthew Risch), a fellow male dancer, confesses to having had sex with men for money. The air is thick with fear and paranoia, as news stories on TV and on the front pages of newspapers and magazines stir up AIDS phobia. When he’s not rehearsing, trying to untangle his telephone cord, listening to cassettes on his Walkman or busy checking his skin for lesions, Frankie is setting traps for the mice invading his apartment; something akin to introducing the gun in the first act. Relegated to understudy, superstitious Frankie is anxious to prove himself to the critical choreographer. Nevertheless, he finds time to hook up with a neighbor, as well as Walt (Kristoffer Cusick), as well as maintain a steady flirtation with Todd, all the while literally and figuratively wringing his hands. Ultimately, share with us on guymag.net

A long time in the making (no thanks to Barbra Streisand), the Emmy Award-winning movie adaptation of Larry Kramer’s difficult and devastating “The Normal Heart” (HBO Films) bows on DVD + Digital HD. The film opens in 1981 with the arrival, at the dock, of a boat to Fire Island Pines, followed soon after by the touchstone of the New York Times article about a rare cancer in homosexuals. Writer Ned (Mark Ruffalo), a semi-autobiographical character based on Kramer, his hot boyfriend Felix (Matt Bomer), closeted ex-marine/current financial guy Bruce (Taylor Kitsch, who is hereby forgiven for all of his past bad acting choices), Gay Men’s Health Crisis executive director Tommy (a brilliant Jim Parsons), and others navigate the frontlines of the battlefield. Meanwhile, the casualties continue to mount as these brave and brash men find ways to make their voices heard. “The Normal Heart” beats hard, loud and fast. Director Ryan Murphy holds his own here, even pulling some of his own trademark visual tricks out of his hat. He gets exceptional performances out of a well-intentioned, but miscast, Julia Roberts as AIDS research Dr. Emma Brookner. Additionally, Joe Mantello, as Ned’s friend Micky, and the aforementioned Kitsch, Bomer, Parsons, and, of course, Ruffalo deliver career-high performances. To his credit, Murphy also doesn’t shy away from the sex, some of which is depicted graphically, a necessary component of the story. As with HBO’s award-winning adaptation of Tony Kushner’s “Angels In America,” “The Normal Heart” found its audience in people’s homes, not in movie theaters. That’s probably best as “The Normal Heart” is a not-a-dry-eyein-the-house production. What queen wants to be seen leaving a movie theater with bloodshot eyes, tear-stained cheeks and a runny nose anyway? DVD special features include “How To Start A War,” a featurette about the true inspiration behind the film, including interviews with Kramer, Ruffalo, Roberts and others. theguymag

TRAVEL

Wearing Your Luggage By Rick kaRlin

o

A few issues ago, we discussed how to avoid hotel fees. With airlines charging extra for just about everything now (“Oh, you wanted to ride inside the plane? That will be $50 extra”), it’s even more important to keep an eye on the little extras that add up. When comparing airfares, keep those extra fees in mind. It may make what appears to be a bargain more costly than standard fares on another line. Southwest still allows two free checked bags; JetBlue permits one. If you’re going on a long trip, that free baggage check may make a difference. See the sidebar for a list of baggage fees charged by the major air carriers. Also, keep in mind the

JakToGo Leather Bag/Jacket (courtesy of JakToGo)

weight limit for bags. It’s usually 50 lbs. and the costs for overage are significant, sometimes as much as $50 if even just a single pound over. I had a friend who dumped a bunch of t-shirts in the garbage rather than pay the weight charges. An easier way to deal with the situation is to hand the person checking in the luggage a tip. It’s amazing how a sawbuck or ten-spot can lighten a load. If you’re worried about excess baggage or carryon charges, why not wear your extra items instead of cramming them into your suitcase? There are some fantastic products on the market

that make carrying a few extra items on board a snap. These new garments, sometimes called “wearable luggage” or “luggage jackets” are essentially clothes with lots of pockets allowing you to “wear” many of your belongings. You’ll never win a fashion competition wearing one of these, but you only need to wear them as you board the plane. Airlines don’t count an article of clothing that you’re wearing as luggage. Hand the agent your boarding pass and saunter down the jetway. Once you’re on the plane, take off the jacket and store it in the overhead. Mission accomplished. The Rufus Roo Luggage Jacket ($49 on Amazon or from www.rufusroo.com) has four large, deep pockets, and two smaller ones, which can easily handle a weekend’s worth of clothes, plus a laptop, books and toiletries. Although downright ugly, it gets the job done, and as the lowest priced of these types of garments, pays for itself after just one use. Jaktogo’s convertible design allows it to work as a shoulder bag as walk through the airport. Once you get ready to board, it unfolds into a jacket with 14 pockets in total. It’s a bit pricier than the Rufus Roo ($199 in poly, $239 in denim, $359 in leather) but better

constructed. Available at www.jaktogo.com. Bagket offers a convertible vest/bag option, with 22 pockets, which can hold 15.4 lbs. of luggage. According to the manufacturer, it’s made of “100% polamide.” I don’t know what that is, but the garment/bag is durable, water-resistant, and it looks better than most of these options. It’s $90 on Amazon, or order from the U.K based company on-line at http://www.bagket.com/. U.K. based Stuffa wins for styling. While the vest does not convert to a bag, it’s stylish enough that you could actually wear it every day. To look at it you’d never guess that it had 12 stuffable mesh pockets concealed within the lining, capable of holding up to 10 pounds of clothes. Two external zippered pockets are perfect for your wallet, phone, keys or passport. It’s $104.99 at http://www.stuffa.co.uk/.

More Inspired Workouts, Beginning Today! by Tom

FITNESS

bonanTi

o

Hopefully this long hot summer has been filled with rest, recreation, travel and some of the best workouts in your life! Just remember to pace yourself and gauge your progress carefully. Staying fit takes more than just pumping iron and downing protein shakes. You must have patience, and practice persistence and consistency. Whether you’re a bona fide pro, or just an average guy trying to stay in shape, there comes a time when you feel a little frustrated, burned out, and yes, even a little bored. Just as there are a zillion ways to get fit, there is the same number of ways to keep up your mojo in the gym. Here are some of the ways I have kept the inspiration going after all these years. Make working out your special “Me” time. Pressures and hassles abound at work and even at home. When you’re at the gym, you are building your body first and foremost for yourself. Shut out all mental distractions. Limit conversation. If you’re working out with a partner or trainer, make sure that accomplishing your routine comes before socializing. Lock your cell phone away somewhere. Tune in to some high-energy music and kick butt in the gym – your butt! Stay focused on using correct form and feeling the burn with each muscle contraction. Stay in tune with your body, how you feel, what you are thinking as your body goes through the marvelous changes that accompany working out. Everyone needs short-term and long-term goals to work toward while in the gym. Otherwise you’re left spinning your wheels. Periodize your training by setting long-term goals for the year. Break up the year into shorter two or three month periods with their own goals. A short-term goal might be to lose 5 lbs. of fat by

share with us on guymag.net

Halloween. There’s no better longterm goal for working out than anticipating all the new friends you’ll make on the Atlantis Cruise you’re taking early next year. Whatever it is, give yourself something to look forward to! And hell, while you’re sculpting that gorgeous body, you may even be improving your health by lowering your blood pressure and LDL (bad cholesterol), and building cardio vascular strength! Insanity has been defined as doing the same things, the same way, all of the time and expecting different results. The same can be said about your workouts as well. Think of ways to vary routines without losing the progress you’ve made. Check out the strides you can make with interval training or circuit training. Change from the same old machines you use at the gym to more free weights. Change the days you work out and the time of day you hit the gym. Change gyms if necessary. Just remember, change can be a very good and exciting thing. Book your workouts into your schedule. Your workouts are as essential and vital to your well being as business meetings, power lunches and conference calls. Furthermore, any boyfriend, boss or co-worker that doesn’t understand your commitment to working out needs a reality check. A fit spouse makes a better lover and happier companion. A healthy employee is less likely to have “down time” being puny and sick. Try to make each workout fun and productive. Remember to set goals and stay consistent. Fitness is a lifetime commitment. You owe it to yourself, Gorgeous! For more inspiration contact TrainerTomB@aol. com! Check out my one on one fitness facility at www.pumpnincgym.com. BOOKMARK

Lincoln Avenue: Chicago Stories by

RichaRd hack

“LINCOLN AVENUE: CHICAGO STORIES” BY GREGG SHAPIRO SQUARES & REBELS, HANDTYPE PRESS IMPRINT $14.95 o Lincoln Avenue is a long stretch of highway that runs on the north side of Chicago and ends up 13 miles away in the Illinois village of Morton Grove. It’s a mostly commercial highway, lined as it is with shops and restaurants that are occasionally upscale, but mostly not. Gregg Shapiro knows a lot about Lincoln Avenue, having grown up along its corridor during the 70s and 80s, and he recaptures many of his memories of the time in his latest book titled after the street and the memories it holds. The 91-page tome is actually a collection of twelve unrelated short stories, which is at once its biggest strength and weakness. We meet and uncover a variety of characters of different shapes and intellectual capacities. Some we enjoy, others we can barely tolerate. The common thread is that each will occupy our lives for mere minutes in time, never to return again. Given that Shapiro has a gift for storytelling, it becomes quite frustrating to be introduced to interesting people who we must, by the nature of this book, get to know in fleeting fashion. One such character is a porn star named Billy Biggs, who we meet aboard the elevated Ravenswood train. “The blond hair, closely cropped on the sides, no sideburns. It was bushy on top and in the back. Those cobalt blues eyes, separated by the bridge of a perfect Roman nose. Lips, soft and full. Teeth, white as cotton. The cleft in his chiseled chin almost as substantial as the cleft between his well-developed pectorals. His broad shoulders straining against the natural fiber of his jacket. He wore black Weejuns, easily a size 12.”

Gregg Shapiro (Photo by Fausto Fernos)

I see Billy Biggs as clearly as if he were standing across the train. That this masculine stud of a man turns out to a porn star, or his lookalike, is fun—if it’s really true. We never discover that actual detail of his life before he vanishes five and a half pages later, while eating a fried chicken breast in a Chinese take-out. I liked Billy, as does Shapiro’s narrator, whose name or description we never catch. “Lunch with a Porn Star” is like a flare, burning brightly and then suddenly gone far too soon, the story ending before we get a chance to savor much about it other than a brief light. So too the college sweetheart named Jeff who comes to town to meet boyfriend Cory’s parents one Christmas. Like much in “Lincoln Avenue,” theirs is a gentle relationship, but also like much in “Lincoln Avenue” tells us just enough to tease and not to educate or evolve. The innocence that exists between the pages of this book paints a much different world

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

than the one we live in today. And when we finished the last of the twelve stories, we feel somewhat robbed. We want more. We want to bathe in that innocence longer, for it is a life that has disappeared before its time. For all its pluses, “Lincoln Avenue: Chicago Stories” has its problems. The first three stories are written in present tense, while clearly these are remembered tales told in reflection. By the fourth story, the aforementioned yarn of Billy Biggs, we’ve shifted firmly into the past—tense and all— where we belong. That we want more is a testament to Shapiro’s skill, which is along the lines of an Edmund White, without the benefit of continuity. Gregg will be reading from his book on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Stonewall Gallery on Wilton Drive. “Lincoln Avenue: Chicago Stories” is available this week on Amazon. Com in trade paperback and eBook formats.
