Ariana Grande & Ryan Adams Ryan Adams (Courtesy of Ryan Adams)
through the vulnerable heartbreaker “Wrecking Ball” and album coda “Let Go,” is first-rate. It’s hard not to think that Adams’ 15-year solo career was leading up to this – an album so good, so Ryan Adams, it’s no wonder it’s named after him. Grade: A-
by
ARIANA GRANDE, MY EVERYTHING o Ariana Grande doesn’t wanna be your “next Mariah Carey.” Shattering the classic-Carey image she somehow became known for (aside from a honeyed coo here and there, I still don’t get the comparison), Grande’s likable-if-weightless sophomore album, My Everything, signals her transition from buzzworthy Disney wonder to major mainstream mainstay. A sizable entourage of radio fixtures riding shotgun doesn’t hurt. With Iggy Azalea, Big Sean and, on the deluxe edition, Nicki Minaj (who, alongside Jessie J, works “Bang Bang” into a bad-girl vocal orgy) helping to turn Grande into a bona fide pop princess, the singer sheds her vanilla wholesomeness – though she knows you love the way she grooves a slowie. The Ryan Tedderproduced power-ballad “Why Try,” the piano-led “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart” and the tender title track fill that quota, but the slick bounce bait on My Everything aims for mass appeal. Paying tribute to the divas who came before her, a sample of Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out” on “Break Your Heart Back” is as fun as it is unnecessary. It’s an issue Grande contends with herself. Having written very little of My Everything, what exactly does the 21-year-old bring to music besides runs? Not that there’s anything wrong with the fluttery “Love Me Harder” or the sprightly “One Last Time” – and the R&B-influenced “Be My Baby” serves ’90s Brandyesque awesomeness – but I still

don’t know Ariana beyond her better-than-average pipes. She’s a product without any character. A ponytail with a voice. Grade: C+ RYAN ADAMS, RYAN ADAMS o As if he’s never felt more like himself, Ryan Adams goes the selftitled route for his 14th solo album. Kicking up the mellowness of his 2011 release Ashes & Fire, a folksy detour that played it safe, he cuts into the alt-rock edge of his earliest recordings for Ryan Adams, a galvanized body that finds glorious middle ground between his cornerstones: rock ’n’ roll and alt-country. “Gimme Something Good” could start a fire; its electric guitar sizzles burning through an Eagles-inspired sound, it dances in the flames, and then fumes at the chorus – a chorus that’d make for a happy Don Henley. “I Just Might” is a gnarled rocker with more of that late-’80s influence, and on it, Adams sounds invigorated. And with shimmering guitars and an easy-to-like sentiment of perseverance, “Tired of Giving Up” is classic Ryan. Earnestly expressing that he’s “tired of fighting” and “I don’t understand it all,” Adams’ blunt sincerity continues to be an endearing quality – it’s what makes the guy such a dynamic musical force, too. The middling music on Ashes & Fire didn’t do much to underpin these heartsleeved musings, but this time, he’s on his game. He’s hitting a stride he hasn’t hit in years. Every song, from “Gimme Something Good” theguymag

COUNTING CROWS, SOMEWHERE UNDER WONDERLAND o The casual drawl of Adam Duritz, dreadlocked Counting Crows front man, is so distinct that it’s more than a voice – it’s the sound of an era. More specifically, the ’90s, when the Crows were perched atop the pop-rock zeitgeist. One of the band’s strongest outings since their heyday, the nostalgic Somewhere Under Wonderland is a Southerninfluenced doozy that bursts at the seams of its heart. As the poetically wistful “Possibility Days” closes out Wonderland, all those emotions you felt the first time you heard “A Long December” resurface like they never even left. MAROON 5, V o By now, you know what to expect from Adam Levine’s band, Maroon 5: trend-grabby pop anthems as infectious as Ebola and as forgettable as... wait, what was I saying? V is frustratingly derivative but also more experimental than anything since the band’s coastal Cali-rock debut. It’s empty-calorie ear candy. But luckily, Levine and co.’s artificiality comes with a few inspired moments, like a pared down piano ballad where Levine and Gwen Stefani deliver heartbroken realness.

SCREEN SAVOR
o Old Ladies BY
GREGG SHAPIRO
o
In “My Old Lady” (Cohen Media Group), 58 year old, thrice-divorced, recovering addict Matthias aka Jim (Kevin Kline) spends his last cent to get to Paris under the mistaken impression that he has inherited an apartment, with a garden, in the Marais from his late father. His plan to sell the flat at a considerable profit and get back on his feet goes up in smoke when he meets 92 year old Mathilde (Maggie Smith), who resides in the apartment with her unmarried daughter Chloe (Kristin Scott Thomas). It appears that Matthias’s philandering father, who bought the unit 43 years earlier, did it through a distinctly French system for buying and selling apartments. In other words, as retired English teacher (who can’t stop correcting people) Mathilde, who has no interest in subtlety, informs Matthias, what he has inherited is a 2400 Euro a month debt. All of this sounds like a relatively theatrical comedic setup (the film was originally a stage play). There are some borderline farcical moments early on, but as the story develops, the characters’ cruelty to each other is pure theatrical tragedy. With so much at stake, things descend into darkness quickly. Trapped in a hopeless situation, Matthias begins peeling back the layers to reveal its dark underbelly. Mathilde carried on a lengthy extramarital affair with Matthias’ father. Chloe, like mother like daughter, is having an affair with a married man. Matthias falls hard off the wagon, making his life and the lives of those around him, a misery. When Matthias say he was “born with a silver knife” in his back, you know he’s not fooling. In addition to infidelity, suicide features prominently, and there is more than a hint of incest in the story, written and directed by playwright Israel Horovitz (father of Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz). Smith is as riveting as ever, but it’s hard to buy Thomas as dowdy. As for Kline, he’s a good actor, but not talented enough to pull off 58 at 67. [In theaters on Sept. 19.]

Photographer and documentarian Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ (“The Out List”) American Masters doc “The Boomer List,” premiering September 23, 2014 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS, features 19 interview subjects, each representing a Baby Boom year between 1946 and 1964. Some interviewees are more immediately recognizable than others, including Samuel L. Jackson, Billy Joel, Maria Shriver and Kim Cattrall, and some are better-spoken than others. The cross-section of “Boomers” features authors (Tim O’Brien, Amy Tan), performers (John Leguizamo), entrepreneurs and business people (Steve Wozniak, Virginia Rometty), groundbreaking women (Johnson Space Center director Ellen Ochoa, The HistoryMakers founder Julieanna Richardson) and a generous selection of LGBT folks (Rosie O’Donnell, photographer David LaChappelle and AIDS activist Peter Staley), among others. Greenfield-Sanders also included black and white portraits of others born in the same year as the designated interview subjects. However, if you’re a stickler for chronology, you’d be wise to sit this one out or take a Xanax.

“David Bowie is” (Done and Dusted) is less a documentary than it is a big screen “ultimate tour” through the acclaimed and extensive David Bowie is… exhibition at London’s V&A (Victoria & Albert Museum of Art & Design), guided by curators Vicky Broakes and Geoffrey Marsh. A “celebration of cultural icon” Bowie, the popular exhibition ran for five months and featured a treasure trove of personal artifacts. Beginning with Bowie’s 1947 birth, as David Jones (don’t miss the baby pics!), in post-war Britain into his formative years (in which Little Richard played a major role). An “instigator of new ideas” and proponent of long hair on men, Bowie began by expressing himself visually through sketches. Perhaps his first major bit of self-expression began when he changed his name to David Bowie in 1965. Most adored for his music, the film (and exhibition) traces that aspect from Bowie’s 1967 debut album (released, unfortunately for him, on the same day as the Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) through his transition to mainstream pop star. As any thorough exhibition would do, it displays Bowie’s influences (Lindsay Kemp), exploration of forms of expression (mime and androgyny), personae (Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke), sexuality (comtheguymag

ing out as gay in 1972 with a wife and child), and his far-reaching influence on the culture at large, all the while finding the threads that run through and connect his work. Naturally, considerable attention is paid to Bowie’s impact on fashion, video and film. Interview subjects and guest speakers in the film include writer Hanif Kureishi, musician Jarvis Cocker, designer Kansai Yamamoto, photographer Terry O’Neil, artist Jeremy Deller and choreographer Michael Clark, to name a share with us on guymag.net
few. The inclusion of comments from people attending the exhibition is also enlightening. More than anything else, “David Bowie is” succeeds in whetting our appetites for the international tour of the exhibit, which makes its only stateside appearance at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago through January 4, 2015. [“David Bowie is” screens at Sun-Ray Cinema, 1028 Park in Jacksonville; Tower, 1508 SW 8th St. in Miami; and O Cinema, 90 NW 29th St. in Miami.] theguymag

TRAVEL
Let It All Hang Out By Rick kaRlin
o
You don’t need to be a die-hard naturist to enjoy a nude swim now and then — and luckily lots of hotels across Europe are relaxed about guests wearing their ‘birthday suits” in public areas. Many of them are gay-only hotels, guesthouses or B&Bs. Gaywelcome.com, the website of the Gay European Tourism Association (GETA), has launched a guide to 82 gay and gay friendly accommodations in Europe where those who prefer to be naked can find places in which nudity is allowed in parts or all of their premises. Cinq & Sept (7 Avenue Henri Mas, Roujan, France, 33-4-67-24-94-46) is a gay-only guesthouse in Languedoc-Roussillon, in the south of France. Priced from ¤80-¤230 a night, it has five suites, an outdoor pool. Nudity is allowed in and around the pool. Finca La Maroma (Cerro Panadero 29715 Sedella, Málaga, Spain, 34-958-06-90-30) is a gayonly guesthouse, in the countryside near Malaga, in southern Spain. Priced from ¤70¤95 a night, with six suites and six rooms, it is open from March to November. Nudity is allowed throughout the property including the outdoor pool, garden and courtyard. Pride Lodge (12 High St., Blackpool, Lancashire, UK, 44-1253-314752), a gayfriendly hotel in Lancashire, Northern England is priced from ¤30-¤34 a night for the two suites and six rooms. Nudity is allowed at the outdoor pool and hot tub. Kastellakia Bay Villa (Peeses, Kéa 840 02, 30-697-443-4340) is on the beach of Kea, an island off the coast of Greece. The three rooms are priced from ¤180-¤500 a night. Open from May to October, nudity is allowed throughout the property. The owner, Michael, speaks English, Spanish, Russian, French and Italian. Of course, you don’t have to go to Europe to let it all hang out. There are places closer to home that are clothing optional. Island House (1129 Fleming Street, Key West, 800890-6284) has an extensive sundeck on the second floor, with a misting system to ensure comfort on the sunniest days. The sundeck

is clothing optional, as are all the common areas of the hotel (except the gym). The health club includes a gym and spa area with sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. An erotic video lounge, open 24 hours a day, shows adult male videos. The resort is gay-owned and managed with an all-male staff. Perhaps the biggest draw for naturists is “Bone Island Bare It All”. Key West has been historically known as Bone Island for over two centuries, and this event gives that name a whole new meaning. Typically the long weekend event kicks off with the “Pre-Come Party” where it is not clothing optional, but clothing banned. Other events include; poolside and bar parties, happy hours, leather and fetish events, a masked ball (I assume the masks are on your face and not your balls) as well as events at sea (snorkeling, paddle boarding and sailing trips.) The weekend concludes with, appropriately, the “Happy Ending Party.” The schedule of events for the next installment, scheduled for Dec. 4-7, had not been finalized as of our deadline, but can be found at www. nakedkeywest.com. There are a number of clothing optional places in Palm theguymag

Springs. Inndulge (601 Grenfall Rd., 800-8335675) is a resort hotel for gay men with clothing optional and nude sunbathing. Its pool and Jacuzzi are open 24 hours. Seattle Gay News commented on “the wonderful mix of guys of all types, Inndulge manages the perfect balance between flirty Gay fun and down-toearth people.” Rooms range from $99 to $239 a night depending upon season, and the seventh night is always free. Helios (280 East Mel Ave., 760-323-2868) is a little bit more than a clothing optional resort, it’s a highly sexualized spot with slings, benches, giant beds, a St. Andrew’s cross and more, where male nudity is strongly encouraged. Rooms range from $179-$200 a night. Triangle Inn (555 East San Lorenzo Rd., 760-322-7993) offers clothing optional living among sundrenched tropical gardens, a pool, Jacuzzi and breathtaking mountain views. Rates begin at $125 per night for studio suites and go up to $499 for a four bedroom house, with fireplace, sunroom, private pool and Jacuzzi. Triangle Inn even offers marriage packages. Of course, you can tan au natural right here in Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors. A number of local hotels offer clothing optional areas and sell day passes. Among some of the most popular are The Cabanas Guesthouse (2209 NE 26th St., Wilton Manors, 954-564-7764), Pineapple Point (315 NE 16th Terr., 954-527-0094), Cheston House (520 N. Birch Road, 954-566-7950), Windamar (543 Breakers Ave. 954-561-0039), Inn Leather (610 SE 19th St., 954-467-1444), Dunes Guest House (2835 Terramar, 954-5686161) and The Grand Resort (539 North Birch Road 954-630-3000). If you prefer a more natural au natural setting, head down to Bal Harbor’s Haulover Beach (10800 Collins Ave.). share with us on guymag.net

FITNESS
Are You A Gym Jerk? by Tom
bonanTi
o
You can spot one 100 feet away. It’s the guy who hoards three sets of dumbbells which he isn’t using at the moment because he is too busy texting. It’s the girl on the cardio machine who carries on a long, pointless conversation on her phone while everyone near her has to listen to her senseless yammering. How about the two body builders who are circuit training, tying up 4 or 5 stations during the most crowded time in the gym? I have a name for these self -absorbed, greedy people. I call them gym jerks. They are real nuisances and yet they abound in every commercial gym. While it may be impossible to eliminate such individuals, it might be good to check your own behavior and see if you exhibit gym jerk tendencies. Firstly, you are a gym jerk if you believe that you are the only one in the gym who matters. If you must carry around your cell phone, put it on vibrate and when you get a call, take it outside or somewhere where you don’t have to share it with the rest of us! Speaking of not sharing, keep a towel with you to wipe down equipment after using it. No one wants to workout in a puddle of your sweat. Secondly, you are a gym jerk if you think the entire gym is your personal domain. Don’t push in front of others to get to equipment. Carelessly throwing weights around and never re-racking them after using them is crass and annoying. Don’t linger at stations while you talk on the phone or waste time. If you are circuit training and tying up several stations, at least be flexible enough to let others use a station between your sets. A simple “Excuse me…” or “Pardon me, are you using those weights?” is so much nicer than a primal grunt and a shove from behind. Recently, at the old gym a roided out gym jerk actually told me I was in his way as he pushed in front of me to snatch a dumbbell! Don’t forget basic kindness and manners. You expect them from others; why not let others learn from your example. Another sign of a gym jerk is bad personal share with us on guymag.net
hygiene. Primal man scent may be the rage at pig dance, but three-day body odor resembling poisonous mustard gas is not acceptable anywhere. If your jock or running bra can stand up on its own, then it’s time to do laundry. Yes, real men bathe, wear deodorant and wash their clothes. While I’m on this tirade about personal hygiene let me say a word to those gym jerks who insist on leaving nasty deposits and residues. Get with the human race. Learn to flush the toilet! Stop using the drinking fountain as your personal waste receptacle! Finally, gym jerks often use the locker room and showers as their own play pens to carry on sexually with themselves and others. Stop it! Your antics are not as hot as you imagine them to be. It is illegal, and furthermore you are setting your club and others up for all kinds of trouble. For me, and many others, the gym is a way of life. Don’t be an obnoxious gym jerk and spoil it. With a few basic rules of etiquette and a little politeness, the gym can be a great place!
