15 TV Shows You Should Be Watching by

Mikey Rox

o

While summer 2014 is cooling down, the fall TV season is just starting to heat up. Bittersweet, ain’t it? At least there’s a silver lining to trading in lazing in the sand for lounging on the sofa: There are plenty of programs with LGBT characters to tune into right now. Which returning shows and series premieres should be on your gaydar? Peep this shortlist of inclusive shows that run the gamut of genres to make your picks.

The Walking Dead (Photo by Gene Page/AMC)

1. THE WALKING DEAD There were no LGBT characters among the central group of survivors in AMC’s post-apocalyptic horror drama until midway through season four until Tara Chambler was introduced (although, recent online chatter suggests that fan favorite and original character Daryl Dixon may, in fact, be gay). However, as is common in the world of the The Walking Dead, the romantic relationship between her and former Army Reservist Alisha is shot down – quite literally – before it has a chance to fully bloom. Perhaps Tara will get

20

share with us on guymag.net

another stab at love in season five now that she’s been promoted to main-character status.

2. THE MCCARTHYS Recently out Ronny McCarthy is about to accept a teaching job in Rhode Island when his basketballcoach father asks him to stay in Boston to be his new assistant. The rest of his tight-knit, sports-loving siblings cry foul over the decision, and hilarity is expected to ensue. Early reviews for this freshman series are mixed, but at least we get to watch Laurie Metcalf and Joey McIntyre for a half hour. theguymag

3. TEEN WOLF This small-screen reboot of the iconic 1985 Michael J. Fox film of the same name (which has nothing in common with its predecessor besides title and a few characters) has been a gay boy’s wet dream since day one – what with all that blatant homoeroticism and gratuitous shirtlessness going around. But it’s recurring gay character Danny (and his paramours) that give the MTV series its real Castro street cred. Here’s hoping that season five brings even more manon-wolf lovin’.

4. UNDATEABLE A charming and surprisingly funny midseason replacement, this NBC comedy provides eye candy in Chris D’Elia’s Danny Burton, and ample gay jokes from David Fynn’s Brett, the refreshingly veryaverage-Joe resident bartender. Undateable was renewed for a second season, but no premiere date has been released.

5. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Gay fans of CW centerpiece The Vampire Diaries were more than eager to sink their teeth into news that a recurring gay character was coming to Mystic Falls toward the end of last season. Tune in Oct. 2 to unravel more of Luke Parker’s mystery when the series returns for its sixth season.

6. SCANDAL If you can get past Olivia Pope’s annoying, incessant bawling, you might find solace in the ruthlessbut-fragile Cyrus Beene, this fictional White House’s first gay Chief of Staff. Brush up on the previous WTF seasons online and on demand before season four bows Sept. 25 on ABC.

7. ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK This much-buzzed-about Netflix original series revolves around Piper Chapman, a bisexual woman sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for transporting drug money for her former girlfriend. Given the nature of the mostly-female atmosphere, there are plenty of other LGBT characters behind bars, including pre-op transgender woman Sophia Burset, played by actress Laverne Cox, who recently made history by becoming the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy in an acting category.

8. SIRENS This Americanized version of a British comedy series follows three Chi-

cago EMTs – one of whom is openly gay – as they navigate the daily highs and lows of first responders. Sirens airs on the USA network.

9. MODERN FAMILY LGBT fans of this consistently hilarious and award-winning ABC comedy are finally satisfied that Cam and Mitchell tied the knot (it wasn’t long ago that the Internet was making a big deal about why the couple never kissed on camera – until they did), so it’ll be interesting to see how they manage married life, for better or worse.

10. SHAMELESS Ian Gallagher gets around. In season one of Showtime’s dramedy Shameless, the fire-haired high school student was schtupping Kash, the owner of the convenience store at which Ian works – until juvenile delinquent Mickey Milkovich comes along. Ian cools things off with Kash as his relationship with Mickey heats up. Then Ian starts fucking Lloyd and Maxine and – oh, who cares, the kid’s adorable and the show is awesome.

11. ONE BIG HAPPY From executive producer Ellen DeGeneres comes this hopeful comedy about two tired-of-beinglonely-and-single best friends – one a straight guy, the other a gay girl – who decide to have a baby together. Of course, this new relationship gets trickier when the straight guy unexpectedly falls in love and marries a straight girl – just when his gay best friend announces she’s pregnant with his child. This NBC comedy is “coming soon,” but no premiere date is scheduled.

12. PENNY DREADFUL A slew of 19th-century characters – like Dorian Gray and Abraham Van Helsing – populate this BritishAmerican thriller-drama that airs on Showtime. While there are no full-time LGBT characters in the main cast (yet), the on-screen alter

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

egos of series stars Reeve Carney and Josh Harnett shared a passionate sexual encounter just four episodes in. Not enough reason to order a subscription, but just enough to YouTube that scene right now.

13. DOWNTON ABBEY As if there isn’t enough to love about PBS’s breakout original drama series Downton Abbey (much of which is owed to the incredible Maggie Smith’s Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham), there’s also the sexy-but-scheming Thomas Barrow who, in time, you’ll fantasize about taking you out back and treating you like a servant.

14. PARKS & RECREATION Openly gay comedian Billy Eichner’s Craig Middlebrooks didn’t get major screen time after he was introduced in season six of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, but his penchant for blowing things out of proportion and waaaay-overthe-top delivery should be put to better use as the mocku-comedy enters its seventh and final season starting in early 2015.

15. RED BAND SOCIETY There’s not much information on character backgrounds for the upcoming Fox dark dramedy Red Band Society, but keep your fingers crossed that this ensemble cast includes at least one LGBT teen among its patients. If not, at least we have Wilson Cruz’s Kenji Gomez-Rejon, an openly gay nurse. Series premieres Sept. 17.

last twenty years with such works as Love! Valour! Compassion! and Kiss of the Spider Woman. If there were anyone worthy of exploring the changing lives of a contemporary gay man it would be him. In his newest work Mothers and Sons, McNally presents the story of a woman, who had lost her son to AIDS twenty years ago, trying to reconcile her fraught relationship with his former lover. GableStage puts on this treatment of the play, which only recently ended its Broadway run. 8:00 p.m. GableStage. 1200 Anastasia Ave. Coral Gables. 33134.

Orphan Train The experiences of young children sent off on a train in New York City in 1914 is told through the eyes of the children themselves in this play written by Aurand Harris. The past and the present are fused together in this story. Orphans today experience the same amount of anxiety, abuse, rejection, acceptance, and hope through their journey. This theatre piece uses music, movement, and film to create a visceral and compelling production as relevant today as ever. The proceeds will benefit 4Kids of South Florida. 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

Foreigner Mick Jones’ British-American rock band Foreigner is one of the world’s all time best selling acts. They have had worldwide sales of over 80 million, with 37.5 million in the United States alone. Their biggest hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is” topped both the UK and US charts. Although they have been replacing band members since the 1970s, their ability to sell out arenas hasn’t declined. There had been much discussion of a band member reunion for the original members, but, unfortunately, the recent death of bassist Ed Gagliardi stopped those plans. The current members include Mick Jones, Kelly Hansen, Jeff Pilson, Tom Gimbel, Michael Bluestein, and Chris Frazier. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

Wilde, at the time of writing, was having his own very private, very secret homosexual affair. The play takes place over a period of twenty-four hours and delves into the idea of an “ideal husband”— a model spouse in both private and public life, a perfection Lady Chiltern demands from her husband Sir Robert. SCREEN SAVOR

Indie Comedies Rule BY

GREGG SHAPIRO

o

“The Skeleton Twins,” the perfect comic companion piece to “Obvious Child,” released earlier this year, is a pitch black comedy about suicide, secrets, bad mothers, alcoholism, strained sibling relationships, marital infidelity, pedophilia, inappropriate behavior, lip synching and Halloween. What saves it from being a total downer is the brilliantly funny writing by Mark Heyman (“Black Swan”) and director Craig Johnson, as well as the extraordinary performances by lead actors (and former SNL cohorts) Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. Siblings Milo (Hader), an actor/waiter, and dental hygienist Maggie (Wiig), known as the “gruesome twosome,” are reunited after 10 years following Milo’s failed suicide attempt in Los Angeles. Returning to their Nyack, New York hometown, where Maggie lives with sexy but slow husband Lance (Luke Wilson), the sibs attempt to repair their broken brother and sisterhood.

Gay Milo is depressed but hasn’t lost his alternately silly and snarky edge. Milo’s presence seems to spark something in Maggie, who has been leading Lance to believe she is participating in their attempts to get pregnant, while secretly taking birth control pills. Also unbeknownst to poor Lance, Maggie struggles with monogamy issues. Meanwhile, Milo takes the hometown return opportunity to attempt to reconnect with an old lover. The emphasis is on old because, as a 15 year old high school student, Milo became involved with his older English teacher Rich (Ty Burrell). The affair cost Rich his job (he now runs a bookstore) and played a part in Milo’s ongoing downward spiral. If it all sounds kind of bleak, it is. However, there are more than enough comedic situations, including a visit from their woo-woo and itinerant mother Judy (Joanna Gleason), a nitrous oxide episode at Judy’s office, and a choreographed bit to Starship’s “Nothing’s

“The Skeleton Twins” (Courtesy of Jan Mitchell & Associates)

Gonna Stop Us Now,” that effectively balance the looming darkness. Wiig’s performance shows depth and dimension, but it’s Hader who has the (skeleton) keys to the kingdom. Milo is much more than just Hader expanding on his beloved Stefon character from SNL. Hader completely fleshes out Milo, making him familiar, funny, fresh and unforgettable.

o

Thanks to cable food channels and the various and sundry cooking shows and competitions that are broadcast, kitchen culture is more popular than ever. The hunger for food in films, including dramas, comedies and documentaries, pre-dates the current epicurean enthusiasm (see “Babette’s Feast” and “Like Water For Chocolate”). Nevertheless, the cravings continue, and 2014 has served up two more appetizing cinematic courses, “The 100 Foot Journey” (still in theaters) and “Chef” (Universal), now available on Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD. Writer/director/actor Jon Favreau plays Carl, the titular character in “Chef.” He’s a brash, obsessive, kitchen commando with a staff, including Martin (John Leguizamo), Tony (Bobby Canavale) and Molly (Scarlett Johansson), that respects (make that worships) him, and a tyrannical boss, Riva (Dustin Hoffman), with a Napoleon complex. Things reach a boiling point following a negative review from powerful and

share with us on guymag.net

feared restaurant critic Michel (Oliver Platt), leading to a showdown between Carl and Riva. Carl walks. Adding coarse sea salt to the wound is his divorce from the glamorous and successful Inez (Sofia Vergara), mother of his devoted but neglected son Percy (Emjay Anthony). Inez wants nothing more than for Carl to succeed, even going so far as to connect him with her zany publicist Jen (a wickedly wacky Amy Sedaris). But Carl, who wants to succeed on his own, eventually succumbs to Inez’s charms, accompanies her and Percy back to Miami, where she is from and where Carl got his start. A meeting with Inez’s first ex-husband Marvin (Robert Downey, Jr.) leads to a new venture in the exciting world of food trucks. “Chef” puts a lot on the menu, including the good and bad power of social media (see the escalation of a Twitter war of words), father and son relationships, road trips, unfinished relationship business, food as a means of creative and personal expression, and the desire to succeed. As with “The 100 Foot Journey,” it’s best to see “Chef” on a full-stomach. Also, vegetarians and vegans should be warned that meat, raw and cooked, plays a prominent role here. Blu-ray/DVD bonus features include deleted scenes and commentary by Favreau and co-producer Roy Choi.

FITNESS

Just Be Flexible! BY TOM

BONANTI

o

The term flexibility refers to the range of motion around a joint. Flexibility is an essential component of overall fitness – just as important as muscular strength and cardio-vascular health. An adequate degree of flexibility will improve performance, speed up gains, and help prevent injuries. Simple stretching to improve overall flexibility can be done at home, in the office on your break, or in the gym. Stretching before your work out will warm up your joints and muscles and prepare them for the work ahead. Stretch briefly before weight training and more extensively between sets and after your work outs. It is believed that excessive stretching before weights can diminish your overall strength for the workout. Longer stretching periods should precede every heavy duty cardio session from pounding a treadmill to outdoor interval training. Stretching after a workout of any kind will help your muscles and the body’s systems to cool down and aid in reducing muscle soreness. When stretching, only go as far as your body allows. Stretch until you begin to feel a slight tension. Hold this position for 20-30 seconds. Never bounce or force a stretch. Breathe in deeply as you go into a stretch and then exhale as you reach the point of tension. Slowly exhale and relax as you let go. Flexibility is not hard to develop or improve. It only takes a few minutes every day. So why not relax, go with the flow and try these stretches in the morning before work, preceding a run on the beach, or after a killer routine in the gym? STRETCH ONELOWER BACK; HAMSTRINGS AND CALF. Stand with your feet about six inches wider than shoulder width apart. Slightly bend your knees into a relaxed position and roll your head and shoulders all the way over until level with your knees, or lower. Be sure your weight is forward, over the balls of your feet,

and just relax into position. STRETCH TWOLOWER BACK; HAMSTRINGS AND LATS. Photo by Move right into this OSTILL stretch from stretch one, reach with both arms over your right leg and try and touch your forehead to your right knee. STRETCH THREEHAMSTRINGS AND HIP SOCKETS. Continue from stretch two by placing both hands on the floor and lunge over to the right, bending the right knee to a 90 degree angle and leaving the left leg straight while flexing the left foot. STRETCH FOURQUADRICEPS, LATS AND SHOULDERS. Stand up and lunge forward with your right leg. Place your left hand on your right knee for support, lift your left foot off the floor and grasp it with your right hand. Keep your back straight and lean slightly over your right knee as you hold the stretch. STRETCH FIVEPECTORALS AND SHOULDERS. Stand in a doorway. Move to your left and place your left raised forearm inside the doorframe and step slightly forward as you torque your upper body to the left. Hold the stretch, release it, and then do the same on your right side. It takes lots of sacrifice and several weeks to lose 5 pounds of fat. It requires work, consistent dedication and sweat to improve cardio vascular health. Long hours of hard work in the gym is the only way to build solid muscle. It takes only minutes a day to increase flexibility – so what are you waiting for? For more tips on stretching, cardio, and weight training, contact Tom at trainertomb@aol.com.
