COVER STORY

Jonathan Hawkins

Broadway, Boys and Briefs by

RichaRd hack Jonathan Hawkins brings Broadway to Wilton Manors on Monday, October 6, at 7 p.m. in a two-hour entertainment experience in the Epic

However, for Hawkins, the move was a liberating one. “My journey really formed me as a musician. Because I always knew what I was suppressing,

Theater of the Manor Complex. Hawkins, who originally hails from Oregon, and has a local connection (his boyfriend lives in Wilton Manors), is an operatically trained singer with a fan-base in musical theater. He just spent the summer performing his one-man show in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the legendary Crown & Anchor Paramount Nightclub where he joined Kevin Aviance, before Hawkins headed to Europe on tour with his music. “I came from a very conservative musical family and went to a private Christian college, so when I came out during my senior year, it was a very difficult process. I could have been severely disciplined if not expelled.”

I limited myself in the songs I would perform. Now that I’m out and proud and having a blast, I sing whatever I want.” Hear the results for yourself this coming Monday at 7 p.m. as Jonathan Hawkins is joined by models showcasing the latest undergear from True Blue, Wilton Manors. “Push Fitness Presents Jonathan Hawkins in Concert: Broadway, Boys and Briefs” is a fundraiser for the Stonewall National Museum and Archives as well as the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. Tickets are available at www.pushfitnessftl.com.

REEL RECOMMENDATIONS

Screen Savor Goes to the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival by

GreGG Shapiro

o

The 6th annual Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival runs from October 10 through the 12 and then continues the following weekend, October 16 to 19. Not only has the festival doubled the number of films to be screened, it also has expanded the total run to seven days. A truly international affair, attendees will hear languages including Spanish, Farsi, German, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch, French and, of course, English, among those spoken in some of the more than 30 feature films. Below is the first in a series of reviews of highlighted films from the festival. For more information, including ticket purchasing information, visit http://flglff.com/.

sor Joaquin (Alonso Echánove) seeks out sexual activity in a steam room. The object of his attention, hustler Gilberto (Alejandro Belmonte), wants cash for contact, leading Joaquin to raid his grandchildren’s Christmas gift fund to pay for it. Writer director Sergio Tovar Velarde expertly weaves the four stories into a colorful quilt, offering comfort and discomfort in equal measure. Remarkably, there’s not a false note

“Four Moons” (Courtesy of Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival)

o

Oct. 10, 2014, 8:00 p.m., Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale: The U.S. premiere of the luminous Mexican film “Four Moons” (Atko Films/Los Gueros) brings viewers up close and personal with four queer males at various stages in life. Schoolboy Mauricio (Gabriel Santoyo) is aware that he is different from his classmates, including cousin Oliver (Sebastian Rivera). When an innocent game of “show me yours/I’ll show you mine” goes awry and Oliver betrays Mau at school, the young boy is faced with circumstances more difficult than he ever imagined. Old friends since childhood, Adolfo aka Fito (Cesar Ramos) and Leo (Gustavo Egelhaaf) reconnect at college in Mexico City. Their renewed acquaintance occurs at a time when both men are questioning their sexuality. Fito, more secure in his identity than Leo, wants to be open about their relationship, but Leo has issues. Male couple Andres (Alejandro de la Madrid) and Hugo (Antonio Velázquez) have been together for 10 years, although Hugo’s math is off by a couple of years (he thinks it’s only eight). That’s not all that Hugo gets wrong. He is insensitive to and critical of Andres, and is also having an affair with Sebastian (Hugo Catalan). Elderly married poet/college profes-

REEL RECOMMENDATIONS in “Four Moons.” Mauricio’s attraction to his cousin is experienced by many gay boys discovering their first stirrings of same sex attraction. In the case of Adolfo and Leo, the coming out process, particularly within a macho culture, is tricky, even today. Anyone who has been in a long-term relationship where one of the partners has fallen for someone else, such as the one depicted by Hugo and Andres, will probably be able to relate to both sides – Hugo not wanting to hurt Andres and Andres desperately trying to do whatever is within his power to save the relationship. The cost of coming out late in life and the toll it can take on a person is presented with precision. However, it’s the incredible scene between Adolfo and his recently widowed mother that is sure to open the tear flood gates. Deftly combining the coming out process, a mother’s need to protect her children, and the heartbreak of unrequited love, it’s the kind of scene

share with us on guymag.net

that tends to linger long after it has concluded. “Four Moon” definitely qualifies as a must-see. (In Spanish with English subtitles.)

o

Oct. 11, 2014, 2:30 p.m., Gateway: Beginning with the 911 call in 2007 that sent police officers to Manhattan’s West Village to investigate a violent altercation between seven young lesbians and one homophobic man on the street, Blair Doroshwalther’s doc “Out In The Night,” follows the impact of that fateful night on four of the women. “Out In The Night” is especially powerful in light of the recent events in Ferguson, Missouri. The trial by media – including incriminating and untrue headlines and labels, such as “killer lesbians” and “lesbian wolf pack,” as well as the misuse of the word “gang” – helped to seal the fate of defendants Venice (pronounced like Denise), Renata, Terrain and Patreese. The four close friends from New Jersey, along with

theguymag

theguymag

guymagtube

47

REEL RECOMMENDATIONS three other women, never thought they’d have a problem being queer in NYC. But everything changes when they are verbally, and then physically, assailed by a man sitting on a fire hydrant in front of the IFC Center cinema. The man, who refused to be interviewed for the doc, is represented onscreen by the voice of an actor reading his trial testimony. The four women, speaking for themselves, tell of his threats of sexual violence, leading to a defensive exchange of words, followed by the man spitting and throwing a cigarette at them. The physical fight that ensued led to the man being stabbed and the arrest of the girls, and their subsequent detention at Rikers Island and later incarceration at Albion State, following the trial and sentencing. As heartbreaking as it is hard to watch, “Out In The Night” not only makes a powerful statement about the miscarriage of justice regarding the trial (the judge also refused to be interviewed for the film), it also presents a portrait of supportive and loving family units. All four women now out of state custody, are forever changed by the experience, and audience members will probably also feel changed by watching this compelling doc.

o

Oct. 11, 2014, 4:30 p.m., Cinema Paradiso: There is much to admire about straight writer/director Eric Schaeffer’s new film “Boy Meets Girl.” First, the film’s lead character, pre-op transgender female Ricky, is portrayed by transgender actress Michelle Hendley, making her film debut. As if that weren’t enough, Schaeffer gets one of the most riveting and unforgettable performances out of Hendley, making it a debut with promise and resonance. Ricky, “born in the wrong body and the wrong town,” lives at home in Kentucky with her father and younger brother Sam, while she takes hormones and waits to find out if she’s been accepted to the Fashion Institute in New York. She’s an aspiring fashion designer and a waitress at a coffeehouse. Her best friend, straight Robby (Michael Welch), has been her champion and defender since they were kids. Everything in Ricky’s world is upended when local rich girl (and politician’s daughter) Francesca (Alexandra Turshen) comes in for a beverage. The two young women strike up a fast friendship, leading to Ricky telling Francesca about herself by text – while Francesca is sitting right next to her! It’s that kind of

48

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

intimate detail that separates “Boy Meets Girl” from the pack. “Boy Meets Girl” also turns the traditional romance suggested by the title on its pierced ear. Francesca, who claims to be saving herself for marriage, is engaged to U.S. Marine David (the stunning Michael Galante). However, David and Ricky have enough of a secret history that it infuriates David when he finds out that Felicia and Ricky are socializing. Meanwhile, Ricky and Felicia’s relationship is quickly moving beyond the friend stage. This is sure to confuse more than a few people, but it’s handled carefully and tastefully, and makes sense in context. Through it all, Robby stands by Ricky, as he comes to his own terms with his feelings for her. Smart, sensitive and enlightening on many fronts, audiences from all walks of life would be wise to get acquainted with this film.

o

Oct. 11, 2014, 5:00 p.m., Gateway: “Alex & Ali,” straight filmmaker Malachi Leopold’s tribute to his gay uncle Alex and the hardship he endured attempting to reunite with his Iranian lover Ali is as devastating as you might expect. The men, who met in late 1960s Iran when Alex was a young American Peace Corps volunteer and Ali was a young “determined, dedicated athlete,” maintained a correspondence for more than 20 years. Separated in the early years of the revolution in Iran, they have not seen each other in 30 years. Alex, HIV+ since 1986, describes Ali as his soulmate. An openly gay man for much of his life, Alex is as sensitive as possible to Ali’s situation. Being gay in Iran is practically a death sentence. Still, the men agree to meet for the first time in more than three decades in Turkey, a country known for offering refuge for LGBT exiles. Sadly, their May 2012 reunion in Istanbul is tainted by the fact that authorities in Iran confiscated incriminating photos and documents (including an application for asylum) from Ali as he was boarding the plane. With a month to resolve the situation before Ali must return home, he has decisions to make, including whether or not he will declare his homosexuality, to set the wheels in motion for his exit from Iran. Naturally, this casts a pall over everything impacting the men’s interaction. “Alex & Ali” has all the elements of a suspenseful thriller, made even more difficult to observe due to the true components of the story. theguymag

TRAVEL

There’s an App for That By Rick kaRlin

o

We all know someone who is so addicted to their cell phone that you’d think their life depended on it. However, sometimes when you’re traveling, your life literally can be saved by your cell phone – if it’s loaded with the right apps. From something as essential as first aid to tasks as simple as finding your way around town, the following apps offer ways to make life easier when traveling and planning a trip. Most of the apps are available for free or a nominal fee at app stores such as GooglePlay and Amazon and those specifically offered by iPhone and Android manufacturers. Many of the apps are designed for offline use, saving you roaming charges if you keep your phone in airplane mode.

SAFETY & EMERGENCY SITUATIONS Back in the B.C. (before cell-phones) days, when travelling, it was difficult to be reached in an emergency. Now that’s no problem, but if you want to avoid roaming charges and be available in case of an emergency, “UrgentCall” supplies you with a private emergency number to use that ensures that you’re only receiving an emergency call. In addition, your phone will not stop ringing until you answer the call, even if there is no service or you have a dead battery. “TravelSafe” compiles emergency numbers and embassy contact information for countries worldwide. You can even pin certain services to your home screen as widgets for one-touch access to emergency services. Anyone who’s traveled with a pet knows how helpless you feel if there’s an accident. “Pet First Aid” deals with everything from cuts and impalement, to choking and CPR. The app offers detailed video instructions and illustrations. It can also store your pet’s vital medical information. There’s no chance of getting a sun burn with “Sunscreen,” which can detect the

50

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

UV rating of any location. Input your skin type and the SPF of your lotion, and it alerts you when it’s time to reapply.

NAVIGATION “Waze” users connect with other drivers in the area and share real-time traffic information, which is particularly helpful for road trips. It can even find the cheapest gas prices in proximity. “FlightTrack” details thousands of domestic and international flights. Delays and cancellations are updated instantly and, once you get to the airport, terminal maps help you negotiate with ease. “HopStop” offers maps and directions for subways and buses as well as walking directions for most European, Canadian and U.S. cities. If you’d rather cab it, check out “Hailo.” The free app uses GPS to send cabs to you in 16 cities, including New York, London, Barcelona, Toronto and Tokyo.

DOCUMENTS “TripIt” organizes all of your trip details into an itinerary stored in one place. Forward your confirmation emails to plans@tripit. com and TripIt will automatically build an itinerary for your trip. Although not the certified copies that are usually required, it never hurts to have back-up copies of essential travel docs such as birth certificates, visas and passports. Upload your docs to web-based servers such as “Dropbox,” “Webjimbo,” “Dataviz” or “Evernote” or store on your phone using “Scanner Pro” “Genius Scan” or “Mobile Doc.”

MAKING LIFE EASIER “XE Currency” is a free currency app that converts prices using live currency rates. Enter where you’re going and how long you’re staying into “Packing Pro” and

theguymag

guymagtube

it’ll create a suggested list of what you might need to pack. The list is separated into categories. With “HopStop,” point your camera at a building, statue or monument and up pops a list of articles about the subject. It also works with barcodes or QR codes. It doesn’t matter how many of these apps you have, if you’re in a locale where English isn’t spoken and you’re not able to communicate with the locals. That’s where translation apps come in handy. The best-rated translation app for Androids is “Better Translator Pro.” It supports more than 50 languages in text-to-text mode (great for signs and menus) and 11 using voice recognition. You won’t be able to have a conversation, but simple questions are a breeze. “Lost in Translation” is a free app that supports 36 languages, but only as text. “Google Goggles” is a free app that can read text in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Turkish, and translate it into other languages. “SayHi Translate” is geared towards conversational speaking and is one of the most user friendly apps available. The standard free app comes with 41 languages and more languages and specific dialects are available via inapp purchases for a couple of bucks.

Deep Inside Hollywood by

TOM HARDY AS THE GAY & THE STRAIGHT KRAY

o

If you’re American, it’s understandable if you aren’t quite familiar with Reggie and Ronnie Kray. They were identical twins, one of whom was gay, and they were also notoriously violent British gangsters. In the U.K. they are the stuff of pop-culture legend. Morrissey wrote a song about them. A 1990 film called “The Krays,” starring Spandau Ballet’s twin brothers, Martin Kemp and Gary Kemp, won awards. So it was time to bring back their story for another go’round with a film, now-shooting, currently titled “Legend.” It’s from writer-director Brian Helgeland and stars Tom Hardy (along with some prosthetic teeth and digital twinmaking tricks) as the brothers, alongside Emily Browning, Christopher Eccleston and David Thewlis. Hardy is really the perfect choice for these roles, having proven he can play gay (“RocknRolla”) and also romance Reese Witherspoon (“This Means War”); he can simmer with barely restrained rage (“The Drop”) and he can explode in similar fashion (“Warrior”). Versatile folks, that’s what actors are supposed to be. This one’s due in theaters sometime in 2015, enough time to go catch up on the lyrics to “The Last of the Famous International Playboys.”

NAKED NICK JONAS. WE REPEAT: NAKED NICK JONAS

Tom Hardy in “Warrior” (Courtesy of Lionsgate Films)

of MMA fighters living in Venice Beach. Another thing Jonas wants you to know is that he’s going to be naked on the show – a fact he recently dropped in very close proximity to another expression of gratitude for his gay male audience – and his character may well turn out to be gay or bisexual. So, to recap: a series about sweaty guys stripped to their shorts, beating each other up, where at least one of them is having sex with both genders. Send thank-you cards to the entertainment professional of your choice for this one, and prove your love for DirecTV by watching it all go down very soon, on Oct. 8.

KEANU REEVES AND ROLAN EMMERICH WILL TAKE YOU TO “NEW ANGELES”

o

o

Now you know why Nick Jonas has that body: he’s about to star on “Kingdom,” a series for DirecTV about MMA fighters. The show, also starring Frank Grillo (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), Matt Lauria (“Friday Night Lights”) and Jonathan Tucker (“Parenthood”), is about the lives and rough times

52

share with us on guymag.net

In the future, a young man breaks free from the boredom of the everyday by entering a virtual reality called “New Angeles.” In this new place, he has a fresh identity, a new destiny, and he solves real-world mysteries that will shape his former life. Sound vaguely like… oh, say… “The Matrix”? Minus the red pills and other easily rearranged plot details? It’s OK if it does – all art borrows or steals from somewhere. So, if your sci-fi idea borrows from earlier, groundbreaking sci-fi ideas, who’s to say it’s wrong? And furthertheguymag

theguymag

more, who better to produce a weekly TV series based on this premise than Neo himself, Keanu Reeves? The actor, alongside producing partner Roland Emmerich (currently in post-production on the period gay rights drama, “Stonewall”), have set up the idea and are going to see how far they can run with it. Casting and pilot are next and, really, with this kind of muscle behind it, it’s surely going to land somewhere running. Stay tuned.

FRANCO’S WANTS TO “CRASH” INTO “FIGHT CLUB”’S PAHLANIUK

o

James Franco, who keeps directing indie film after indie film – when he’s not busy jumping out of Jimmy Fallon’s birthday cake with a shirtless Seth Rogen – is going to make another indie film. He’s acquired the feature film rights to “Fight Club” author Chuck Pahlaniuk’s 2007 novel, “Rant”. He also may take the title role in the movie as Buster Rant Casey, a demolition driver who participates in something called the Party Crashing derby, where drivers intentionally crash into each other for the physical thrill of it (recalling J.G. Ballard’s novel and David Cronenberg’s film adaptation, “Crash,” about people who become involved in auto accidents as part of a sexual fetish). Filmmaker Pamela Romanowsky (“Adderall Diaries,” co-produced by Franco) may write and direct. It’s early days for this one, so expect more details to follow. Also expect to see Franco direct/write/ produce/star in several other projects in the meantime. Who needs sleep, anyway? Romeo San Vicente jumps out of birthday cakes on request, at reasonable rates. He can be reached care of this publication or at DeepInsideHollywood@qsyndicate.com.

o The second city is in full force in Fort Lauderdale, both with the opening of Chicago-based Progress Bar and tonight’s performance by the city’s most famous eponymous band. Chicago is one of America’s longest-lasting classic pop/rock groups, having come to prominence in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Some of their most famous hits include “If You Leave Me Now,” “Make Me Smile,” “Colour My World,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,” and “Saturday in the Park.” Their style includes a distinctive horn section, coupled with sentimental power-balladesque lyrics. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

o Singing a mixture of blues, soul, folk, and rock, Citizen Cope creates music from his heart. As a songwriter, he has written music for such diverse acts as Carlos Santana, Dido, Pharoahe Monch, and Richie Havens. His 2002 self-titled debut received praise from Rolling Stone and the Washington Post. Some of his music has been featured in shows like Entourage, Scrubs, and One Tree Hill. His newest album One Lovely Day has been his most successful to date, reaching 39 on the charts. 9:15 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW Third Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

FITNESS

15 Fat Fighting Strategies for Fall by Tom

bonanTi

o

Although experts and regular people alike know more about fitness and nutrition than ever, body fat levels are escalating throughout the Western world. The problem is that the best eating plan won’t do you a bit of good if you aren’t willing to follow it. And it boils down to this, when you eat more than your body is willing to burn off or turn into muscle, that extra food turns into fat, lard, blubber, etc.. Sounds ugly? It is, and unhealthy, too. But don’t despair! Here are 15 fat fighting strategies that will help you conquer the ever present battle of the bulge. 1. Forget the old adage: “I work out, so I can eat anything I want!” Your nutrition each day should be as carefully planned out as any other important activity. 2. View your nutrition as a way of fueling your daily activity levels at work, at leisure, and in the gym. 3. Always eat a breakfast rich in protein and complex carbs which will keep your blood sugar steady throughout the day. Never skip breakfast! Have small healthy snacks around to eat between meals. 4. Before eating anything, ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” After a few bites ask, “Do I really feel like eating more?” If the answer is “no”, then stop eating! 5. The word diet has negative connotations. View your daily eating as an overall nutritional plan. 6. Never lose more than 1-3 pounds per week, otherwise you risk losing muscle as well as fat, and your energy levels will plummet! 7. A healthy nutritional plan can be enjoyable if you avail yourself to the vast variety of delicious, healthy food alternatives at your fingertips. share with us on guymag.net

8. Limit your alcohol intake. Period! The calories from alcohol are empty, valueless, and drinking can only lead to weight gain over time. 9. Focus on eating plenty of low fat protein, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and other foods low on the glycemic index (which measures how fast carbs are converted into energy). 10. Avoid “fast food” establishments. 11. Write down what you eat every day. It’s easy to underestimate your food consumption, so documenting what you really eat in the course of the day will allow you to make better choices. 12. Find new, active and creative ways of dealing with stress. Don’t succumb to lethal stress and binge eating. 13. Make sure your other needs are satisfied. Food is not the answer if you are feeling tired, lonely, anxious, burned out or bored. 14. Don’t dwell on the scale. Instead, focus on eating for health, feeling good and better workouts. 15. Get the support you need from friends, or even groups like Weight Watchers or Overeaters Anonymous. Here’s to a leaner, healthier fall!
