Getting to the Core of

Nick Jonas

Abs, Album and that Gay Striptease ‘They Made Me Do’ you think of Nick Jonas – and let’s face it, you’ve o When been thinking a lot about him lately – a few things come to mind: the straight-edged Jonas Brothers. Former flames Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. His abs. Per his handlers, two of those topics were off-limits during my chat with Nick, but so what. Ever since he posted a salacious Instagram pic of his fit, V-cut torso in 2013, it’s been ab this, ab that. The 22-year-old BFF to the gay community is also releasing a self-titled, post-Jonas Brothers album, which he chatted about during our interview. You know, in addition to his abs. You said recently that part of the reason you’re so adamant about reaching out to the gay community is because you don’t feel like the Jonas Brothers did enough of it before. So, is this gay media blitz your way of making up for lost time? (Laughs) Maybe! I think my brothers and I did what we could, but at that time, in our career and during that moment in our lives, it was pretty crazy. We had so much going on that we were, I think, just trying to stay on top of everything. I’ve had a little time prior to the promotion (of this album) to establish exactly what I want to say, who I wanna talk to and the steps I wanna take. Did the lack of gay media have anything to do with your handlers? Were people telling you not to do gay press to maintain your conservative Disney image? To be honest, I don’t think it was that. I

32

theguymag

think if we had wanted to make an effort there it wouldn’t have been an issue. It was important and it is important to me, and it’s also important to me as I transition into acting. I’m on a show called Kingdom where my character goes on a pretty interesting journey. I can’t give anything away – no spoilers – but it’s been fun as an actor to be willing to go to that place. I love playing this role that I play, and I’m excited for the audience to go on this journey with me. Considering you’ve revealed there’s a nude scene, we are also excited to go on this journey with you. What’s it like shooting a nude scene? It’s pretty bizarre. The way you have to go into it… it’s not real. As actors, it’s our job to tell these stories, and with a show like theguymag

COVER STORY “Kingdom,” you go the extra mile and push the boundaries and keep it very real. So, in that moment, it’s just about telling the story the best way you can while trying to be honest. As far as any of the physicality goes – or nudity or sex scenes – it’s just about knowing that it isn’t real. Wait, your sex scene is not real? (Laughs) It’s not. Why is it so important for you to reach out to the gays for your solo debut? When I was setting up this record and meeting with the team about it, I told them that I really wanted to make an effort to embrace that part of my audience. I’ve known for a long time that it is a great part of the audience, and I just never felt like we made all the effort we could to embrace them. It’s been really fun and really incredible. When did you know the gay community was embracing you? I think it was a combination of things. I did theater prior to recording music, and so at a very young age I made a lot of really close gay friends. When I started recording music, and my brothers and I started recording and touring, we saw pretty quickly – this was back in 2005/2006 – that this was a big part of our

audience. As the years went on, and as I went back into theater, I made the (gay community) a priority. It’s about embracing all sides. You’re currently on tour, and considering how much attention you’ve given the gays lately, how gay are the audiences that come out to see you? It’s been pretty awesome to look out and see a difference in the crowd. It’s not drastic by any means; it was kind of there prior, but there’s definitely more of them embracing this next chapter in my life and my music. All that, I can feel. Looking out, there is probably a handful more gay fans out there, which is incredible. So, like, if you had to rate the gayness of a Nick Jonas show, where would it fall on the Kinsey Scale, 1 being straight and 6 being totally gay? (Laughs) I don’t know if I can answer that just yet. I think I need to let it continue to evolve. It’s in the early stages here. Let’s see where we get in the next couple of months and then we’ll make that call. You have a point. Considering you just performed in San Francisco, the number would be skewed. (Laughs) Exactly! Because your abs are now famous as well, do you feel obligated to show them at every show? (Laughs) Umm, no. I haven’t showed them at any of my shows. That was more so when I was in New York celebrating the release of the new music and I went to a couple of gay clubs and… (Laughs) They kind of made me do it, so I had to! But as far as my shows go, I keep it fully clothed.

34

theguymag

I saw the video online, Nick. I didn’t see anyone taking your shirt off for you. It was a few drinks in at that point. All bets were off. When you show up at a gay club like the ones in New York, do guys hit on you? Do they flirt? And how do you approach a situation like that? Yeah, it’s interesting. Whether it comes from people who are aware of me and my personal life, or the person who was on the microphone saying it, there’s a general awareness that I am straight but totally embracing of the gay community. I love my gay fans, so it was just a lot of love, and there wasn’t a whole lot of hitting on me and flirting. A little bit, which was actually kind of fun. (Laughs) It was a pretty new environment for me, so I was just trying to take it all in and have a good time.

That’s a good question. I always have been. I think that’s a testament to growing up in the theater and from an early age being surrounded by (gay people), and my parents – although my dad was a pastor – were very open-minded and said the same thing that I say, “We have to love people from all walks of life, and that’s the key.” It was nice to come from that. Definitely my opinion and my feelings on faith and religion, specifically, have evolved over time just having seen some of the judgments that other people show toward the lesbian and gay community. It really burdens my heart, and it saddens me in a huge way because I feel like it’s not our place to judge at all. Some of the most loving, caring relationships that I’ve ever seen are between my gay friends, and some of my straight friends’ relationships are the worst examples of what love is.

“Some of the most loving, caring relationships that I’ve ever seen are between my gay friends…”

What do you make of naysayers who say you’re just using your body to bait the gay community? Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. I think it’s unfortunate that some people have to find a negative in every situation. Clearly my heart is in the right place, and more than anything, if they just looked at my life and my gay friends and the authentic nature of where my heart is, they’d just see that they’re kind of ignorant. The nature of where we are today is, we’re in a time where we need to make strides and step forward as a society and embrace all people from all different walks of life. When you’re trying to make a bold statement like that, some people aren’t gonna fall in line with that. And that’s OK. You gotta stay on your own path. You’ve recently opened up about your religious journey and how you’ve taken off your “purity ring.” Did the gay people in your life have anything to do with reexamining your religion? Have you always been this accepting of homosexuality? share with us on guymag.net

With your parents being as openminded as they are, were there gay people in your life even before you pursued theater? There were. My parents were always good about having an open mind toward everyone. Like I said, although church and religion were a cornerstone for us in a lot of ways, they (my parents) were open, and especially after we left the church and had to develop our own faith is when my views and opinions started to take shape. Would you still consider yourself Christian? I say now that I have a relationship with God and that it’s my own relationship with God. It’s one of those things that I try to keep most personal because I think that’s the healthiest way I’ve learned to deal with it. I keep it as that, and I know that I love God and he loves me.

The History Behind

LGBT History Month BY

RICHARD HACK

is LGBT History Month and profiles of famous gay and lesbian writo October ers, actors, athletes and politicians have been appearing in various media for the past several weeks. Even as we pay homage to the trailblazers, we pause to reveal the fascinating background behind LGBT History Month itself.

While the celebration is now firmly ingrained in our culture, it hasn’t also been so. The concept for LGBT History Month came by way of a 29-year-old Missouri high-school history teacher named Rodney Wilson, who shared his sexual orientation as part of his lectures on the Holocaust. After a screening of a film about the war, Wilson said, “If I had been in Europe during World War II, they would have put this pink triangle on me and gassed me to death, because I am gay.” The same year Wilson joined with Kevin Jennings of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to form a coordinating committee to discuss turning October into a month to celebrate gay and lesbian history. Kevin Boyer of Gerber/Hart Gay and Lesbian Library and Archives in Chicago; Paul Varnell, writer for the Windy City Times; Torey Wilson, Chicago area teacher; Johnda Boyce, women’s studies major at Columbus State University and Jessea Greenman of UC-Berkeley also joined the effort to bring the concept to reality. They group picked October because October 11 was already established as National Coming Out Day, and, in 1979, the first March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation occurred in October, 1979. While LGBT History Month is intended to encourage honesty and openness about being LGBT, Wilson himself faced the ramifications of his 1994 disclosure when the Mehlville (Missouri) School District placed a memo in Wilson’s personnel file. “Mehlville School District considers it inappropriate conduct for a teacher to discuss facts of a personal nature, regardless of the nature of those beliefs, in the classroom.” Concerned for the school board’s ability to fire him over the revelation, Wilson hired an attorney in 1995 to successfully have the memo removed

from his file. It didn’t hurt that Wilson was backed up by the 2.2 millionmember National Education Assocation, which, in 1995, indicated support of LGBT History Month as well as other history months by resolution at its General Assembly. (Since 1973, the NEA has offered free legal counsel to teachers harassed or discriminated against because of sexual orientation.) LGBT History Month has earned the support of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, as well as the NEA. Originally called the Lesbian and Gay History Month, the coordinating committee soon added “bisexual” to the title. It has subsequently become known as LGBT History Month. Equality Forum, a national and international LGBT civil rights organization with an educational focus, took over responsibility for LGBT History Month in 2006. In 2012, Broward County School District made some history of its own when it became the first school district in the nation to officially recognize LGBT History Month when it signed a resolution in support of LGBT Americans. Last that same year, the Los Angeles School District began to teach classes in LGBT history. Furthermore, spearheaded by Gov. Jerry Brown (D-Calif.), the Golden State signed historic legislation into law in July 2012. Brown signed another monumental bill in September of that same year that would ban gay reparative and conversion therapies. Wilson insists that disclosures like his can help save lives. A 1989 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study said homosexual youths are two or three times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. According to studies, gays may account for 30% of suicides among minors annually.

HEAR ME OUT

Jennifer Hudson, Tim McGraw by

Chris AzzopArdi as absurd is “Portland, Maine,” a sweet-but-naive guitar ballad that’s out of touch with the fact that you can no longer say “I don’t know where that is” in 2014. There’s this thing called GPS. Still, as laughable as some of Sundown Heaven Town is, McGraw makes every effort to sustain a career in the ever-changing country culture. Because even without Google Maps, he has a pretty good idea of not just where he’s at but where he’s going. Grade: B-

Jennifer Hudson (Courtesy of QSyndicate)

Also Out JENNIFER HUDSON, JHUD o Jennifer Hudson has never needed the post-studio polish her contemporaries depend on. Hudson proved she had the pipes on “American Idol,” and then later, as Effie in “Dreamgirls,” she triumphantly tore into “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” (Stop and think: Can you name a single one of her peers capable of covering that behemoth? Ariana Grande lacks soul. Adele, maybe.) Yet, even with Hudson’s rip-roaring voice — one that, had it been around in the ’90s, would have had Whitney and Mariah shaking at the knees — producers are at a loss when it comes to finding Jennifer a place in the pop pantheon. Unfortunately, JHUD isn’t an exception. Even though she’s riding the return of the ’70s-disco wave, a major shift from the R&B/hip-hop sound of her eponymous debut and its 2011 follow-up, it’s hard imagining any of these momentarily-satisfying songs carrying a legacy. That’s not to say the sassy “He Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” (featuring Iggy Azalea) or the Daft Punk-y “It’s Your World” with R. Kelly are bad — they’re just not good enough for Hudson. That Hudson is far more talented than the otherwise mediocre JHUD is clearest on “Moan,” a powerful tear-jerking gospel tribute to her late mother, who was murdered in 2008. With the disco lights turned

52

down, and with total disregard to trends, it’s just Jennifer’s heart pouring out through her. It’s the best thing on the album — actually, one of the best things of her career. Should Hudson go straight-up soul next time around, we’d be totally fine with that, right?. Grade: C+ TIM MCGRAW, SUNDOWN HEAVEN TOWN o Country artists are really good at making you feel bad about “the now.” Whether it’s Miranda Lambert returning to her childhood house or The Judds asking gramps to share stories of yesteryear, these people love nostalgia. No surprise, then, that “Meanwhile Back at Mama’s,” a charming duet with wife Faith Hill, is another hit for Tim McGraw. That it’s musically reminiscent of the Music Row superstar’s traditional prepop, no-Nelly origins isn’t only refreshingly rootsy — it really brings its message of “simple things” home. As far as these sentiments go, it’s business as usual. But McGraw also knows the up-and-coming competition is nipping at his heels, so with “Keep On Truckin’” — thankfully not just another ditty about a dude and his Chevy – the veteran uses the apt idiom for a ridiculous-but-irresistible burst of dancey pop-country (these are actual lyrics and I’m not kidding you: “So your flop don’t flip, ’cause your hop don’t hip”). Equally

PERFUME GENIUS, TOO BRIGHT o Mike Hadreas’ delicate outpourings from his first two LPs were misinterpreted as feeble, something the singer himself observed from web babble. But no one can make that claim of his bold and beautiful junior release. “No family’s safe when I sashay,” the Seattle pianist (better known as Perfume Genius) swaggers on “Queen,” a fiercely gay anthem that grunts, sparkles and browbeats everything in its path. A nonconformist opus drawing from a throng of musical influences, Too Bright is the epitome of an artist in full bloom. BROODS, EVERGREEN o With the evocative female-fronted electro sounds of Lorde, CHVRCHES and Banks redefining the zeitgeist, New Zealand’s brother-sister duo Broods couldn’t have dropped their debut at a better time. Standouts are the somber, drum-driven “Mother & Father” and the wistful heartbreaker “Killing You,” but Georgia and Caleb Nott’s handsome indie-pop is sleek and mesmerizing throughout. For once: a sad dream you won’t want to wake up from. Chris Azzopardi is the editor of Q Syndicate, the international LGBT wire service. Cintora Casino Night o Casino nights at Sidelines allow guests to participate in the fun of gambling without the high stakes of using actual cash. The best part about share with us on guymag.net

these nights: all of the money goes toward a good cause. Cintora Casino Night will benefit the Smart Ride—a two-day, 165-mile bike ride from Fort Lauderdale to Key West which helps raise funds for AIDS service organizations in Florida. A twenty-five dollar buy-in grants participants $2500 in chips. Casino games featured include roulette, Texas holdem, and blackjack. There will also be light hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, and raffles. 7:00 p.m. Sidelines. 2031 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors. 33305.

Motley Crue o Before the infamous sex tape and his tumultuous marriage to iconic vegan Pamela Anderson, Tommy Lee was just a drummer for one of the most famous American heavy metal bands ever created. Motley Crue’s career in the 1980s and 1990s included numerous hits, brushes with the law, prison-sentences, and drug addictions. Their ninth and final album Saints of Los Angeles was released in 2008 and was certified Gold in 2012. This is their final tour together—they recently signed a “cessation of touring” agreement that will disallow touring under the name Motley Crue ever again. 8:00 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

Zombie 5K

Lavell Crawford

o Zombies have never been known for their speed. In the original conception by George Romero, zombies were meant to be slow and lifeless figures symbolizing America’s consumerism or racism (depending on the film). A zombie-themed race, then, seems somewhat inapt. Ironically, zombie-5ks throughout the country have become successful thanks to the rising popularity of shows like The Walking Dead. This zombie-themed 5k will also feature a Zombie Apocalypse EDM party with music by DJ Dekade. Vendors and food trucks will also be on hand to satisfy any zombie runner’s hunger. 5:00 p.m. Pompano Community Park. 820 NE 18th Ave. Pompano Beach. 33060.

o Lavell Crawford might be known best as “Luell”—the overweight, affectionate, funny bodyguard for Saul Goodman on AMC’s wildly popular Breaking Bad. With the end of that show, Crawford is out pursuing his other career—that as stand-up comedian. Crawford has also appeared on the TV shows It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Tosh.0. His comedy has been featured at such popular clubs as the Comedy Store, the Improv, and the Comedy House Theatre. He’s regularly featured on It’s Showtime at the Apollo and Comic View. 8:00 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314.

Porter Robinson o Porter Robinson is currently considered one of the most important electronic producers in the industry. He has remixed music for Avicci and Lady Gaga—the latter catapulted his career and solidified his status as a headlining live artist and DJ. A native of Chapel Hill, he actually began his career as a teenager, having been influenced by videogaming music, specifically Dance Dance Revolution. His first solo album Worlds was released on August 12th. Opening for him are Giraffage and Lemaltre. 9:00 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.

Peter and the Starcatcher o Sexually ambiguous, lithe, and egocentric Peter Pan may be the eponymous star of the classic story Peter Pan, yet the tale is told through the point of view and character arc of less-magical human Wendy. Peter and the Starcatcher is a play based on the 2006 novel by South Florida native Dave Barry which places the perspective squarely on Peter Pan. The play provides a backstory for the immature boy and acts as a prequel to the classic tale. Twelve versatile actors play over 100 characters. The plot follows Peter and a sweet but sophisticated mysterious new friend named Molly as they keep a magical secret safe, protecting the world from evil. 8:00 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

Ringo Starr and His All-Star Band o The lead singer of such classic songs as “Yellow Submarine” and “With a Little Help from My Friends,” Ringo Starr is considered one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock. He began his career in uber-famous, iconic British pop group The Beatles before their infamous disbandment in 1970. In the 1990s Starr reignited his career by creating a touring “All-Starr Band” consisting of members from other famous rock outfits. This year’s incarnation includes Toto’s Steve Lukather, Mr. Mister’s Richard Page, Journey’s Gregg Rolie, Todd Rundgren, and Gregg Bissonnette. 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

Judy Tenuta o Outrageous redheaded funny woman and early LGBT-rights activist Judy Tenuta will be performing tonight at Jokers Wild Comedy Club and Bar. Tenuta is known for her coarse voice, accordion-playing, and raunchy humor. Last year she was one of the main performers at Pride Fort Lauderdale. She promotes The Power of Judyism—her own religious concept explicated in a book and comedy CD. She has been nominated for two Grammys and has had numerous specials on HBO, Showtime, and Lifetime. 8:00 p.m. Jokers Wild Comedy Club and Bar. 10800 W. Sample Rd. Coral Springs. 33065. theguymag

FITNESS

Fuel Your Day, Fuel Your Workouts, Eat Breakfast! by Tom

bonanTi

o

What’s the first thing you do every morning once you bound out of bed to greet the day? Perhaps you check your texts, or log onto your email. Maybe you post on Facebook or scroll through Grindr. Next, you shower and shave and gulp a cup of coffee as you take the pooch out to poop. Occasionally, when you think of it, you grab a banana or scarf down a quick bowl of cereal. Then you are off to the salt mines for another day at this rat race which is your so- called life. Well, I hate to rain on your parade, but you just cheated yourself big time and started your day on the wrong foot. You neglected to do the most important thing that everyone needs to do in order to insure a successful and healthy day: you skipped breakfast. It has been proven again and again that this first meal of the day is the one, more than any other that fuels your body and your workouts. Yet, it is the first thing that gets dropped on those busy, hectic mornings! When I speak of breakfast, I’m not referring to the prepackaged muffin from the convenience store that you gobbled on the way to the office. The doughnuts someone was “kind” enough to bring into the break room are not a healthy nutritional choice to begin a long arduous workday. When you skip breakfast and fail to eat regularly throughout the day you are simply setting yourself up for failure. Your body begins to think you are starving it, so it responds by storing fat more quickly and readily. Without healthy doses of protein your muscles have nothing to draw from for growth and recovery, especially if you are working out hard and regularly. Denying yourself complex carbs causes your energy level to ebb and sag. You simply won’t have the energy your body needs to survive the day. If you live this scenario consistently, you’ll never have the get up and go share with us on guymag.net

that you need to succeed at work, at home, in the gym and in the bedroom. Furthermore, if you believe that omitting breakfast and fasting throughout the day will make you lose weight, you’re dead wrong. Not only will your body scramble to store everything that you eat as fat, but your metabolism will plummet and your appetite will actually increase! The end result? You will end up tired, crabby, fat and feeling defeated. Recent research shows conclusively that all of the above drama can be avoided by eating a large breakfast high in low glycemic index carbohydrates (whole grain cereals and breads, nuts and fresh fruits, English muffins, and steel cut oatmeal) and protein (skim milk, eggs, lean chicken breasts and yogurt) followed by a low carb, high protein, and low calorie diet for the rest of the day. Smoothies are also a good choice when you’re in a hurry. Those who eat like this are able to control their appetites and reduce their cravings for junk foods. A healthy breakfast followed by 3 or 4 smaller meals throughout the day insures that you will not run out of energy and your body will actually burn more calories and store less fat. If you are resolved to do something really good for yourself, then start the day off right everyday by eating a substantial and healthy breakfast.
