BARTENDER OF THE WEEK
Sal DeFalco by
Daniel Hicks
o A bartender for more than 40 years at iconic New York City hangouts such as “The Saint”, “Stonewall” and “Studio 54”, Sal DeFalco of Wilton Manors personifies the rise and evolution of HIV in America. But while he’s been able to beat the scourge for 35 years, his face has vanished from behind the bar at “Hunters” on Wilton Drive. “I’ve gone from living in the light to living in fear,” says DeFalco, one of the most prolific male hustlers of the late 1970s. On September 5, DeFalco was diagnosed with brain, throat and lung cancer and underwent surgery for the first tumor in his head on September 15, six days after turning 56th birthday. With his partner of 25 years Claude Tant at his side, DeFalco’s next operation is scheduled for this week. His eyes well up as he laments an iconic life turned upside-down by the news, blaming his doctor for not catching the disease sooner. His voice cracks when he describes
Sal DeFalco (left) and partner Claude Tant the loss of religious workouts to the pain of getting out of bed. “I walked in (to the hospital) as healthy as can be and walked out a dying man,” he says. De Falco grew up in the New Jersey projects and ran away from home when he was 14, landing his first job at New York City’s Limelight, a Mafia-owned drag palace. At 19, he became one of the original bartenders at Studio 54, which was

owned by Ian Schrager and the late Steve Rubell, who died of AIDS in 1989. He recalls a laundry list of romantic encounters with famous names like music mogul David Geffen, record executive Clive Davis, fashion designer Calvin Klein and singer-songwriter Peter Allen, who penned his Oscar-winning “caught between the moon and NYC” lyric as his flight circled above LaGuardia airport and DeFalco waited for his plane to land. Allen died of AIDS in 1991. Today, as he fights for his life, DeFalco raises a red flag about what he calls new “communion parties” springing up at local Fort Lauderdale hotels, where new HIV drugs like Truvada give local gay men a misplaced sense of invincibility to unprotected sex that replaces last century’s foregone era of plain ignorance. “(Unprotected sex) went on in bars, back alleys, bath houses and on the balconies of Studio 54 and The Saint,” says DeFalco. “If this (behavior) keeps up, there will be a new superbug that the government can really blame on us instead of the GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency) syndrome that they tried to blame us for then.”

SCREEN SAVOR
That Old Time Religion by
GreGG Shapiro
o
“A film of the theatrical experience,” “Southern Baptist Sissies” (Breaking Glass Pictures) might feel like a bit of a letdown after the “Sordid Lives” movie and subsequent TV series. But the strength of Del Shores’ writing and the performances of the talented cast go a long way in convincing the viewer to overlook the limitations of the stagey presentation. Honoring the piece’s theatrical roots, “Southern Baptist Sissies” is presented in two acts. In the first, amidst the fire and brimstone pews of the Calvary Baptist Church in Dallas, we meet Mark (Emerson Collins), who functions as the narrator. Fellow sissies at the church include his best friend Andrew (Matthew Scott Montgomery), his crush TJ (Luke Stratte-McClure) and Benny (Willam Belli, of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” renown), described as “the biggest sissy of all.” According to Mark, it is in this church that they “learned to hate themselves.” Across the stage, in a gay bar setting, Peanut aka Preston (the inimitable Leslie Jordan) and Annette Odette (Dale Dickey), who has had a series of unfortunate events, act as an unofficial Greek chorus, either commenting on the action or relating their own sordid tales. Peanut and Annette Odette’s scenes are a potent blend of laugh-out-loud comedy and tear-jerking tragedy, like those involving the sissies, which is something that speaks to Shores’ flair for dialogue. “Southern Baptist Sissies” provides the details of the young sissies’ formative years as well as glimpses of them as adults (at least those
46
share with us on guymag.net
who survived). Benny, who was the most at ease with his sexuality, is now a drag performer known as Iona Traylor. TJ, however, the most devout of the bunch, became a fanatical preacher in adulthood. That doesn’t erase his intimate relationship with Mark, nor Mark’s feelings for him. But in the dramatic conclusion to the first act, it becomes clear that while Mark is ready to embrace who he is, TJ (who obviously has strong feelings for Mark) can’t discard his faith. The second act also incorporates both comedic and dramatic situations. Gay realization comes to Andrew who admits to masturbating to pictures of N*Sync, but he struggles with being gay. When his mother discovers Andrew’s personal gay stash, things go rapidly downhill and the first tragedy occurs. Benny who embraced his identity early at bible camp, keeps in the loop with Mark through Mark’s column in a gay publication. Meanwhile, TJ, who desperately tried to wash away his attraction to men, and Mark do get to have a final confrontation. And, in spite of having had a crush on Jesus and “allowing” the Baptists to fuck him up, Mark is a survivor, taking the God is love message to heart and waking up daily with hope. Strongly recommended, “Southern Baptist Sissies” will make you cry (Annette Odette’s confession is one example) and laugh so hard that you’ll cry (practically anything Peanut says). DVD special features include a pair of music videos, cast interviews and a behind the scenes featurette. theguymag

o
The doc “Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption” (Breaking Glass Pictures) follows a theater company’s production of the Terrence McNally play “Corpus Christi,” in which the Passion story is retold depicting Jesus Christ as a gay man in 1950s Texas. Described as “a lifechanging journey” for the cast and director, the film focuses on the period between 2006 and 2011, when the play was produced in a number of US cities, as well as in Ireland, Scotland and Mexico. As you might expect, they were met with their share of resistance, usually represented by unemployed and unbathed religious zealots who have plenty of time on their hands to protest theatrical productions they haven’t actually seen. Featuring interviews with McNally, McNally’s lawyer husband Tom Kirdahy, Norman Lear, Larry Kramer, as well as some religious leaders and others. A majority of the interviews are conducted with the cast and director Nic Arnzen (who co-directed the doc along with actor James Brandon, who also plays Joshua/Jesus in the play). Therein lies the problem: actors talking about acting can be a risky and distracting proposition. The inclusion of the cast’s personal stories and their own experiences with religion are only moderately more interesting. The end result, intentional or not, is that “Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption” will probably only fuel fans of the play’s desire to see a fulllength dramatic film adaptation of McNally’s controversial creation. DVD special features include interviews, backstage footage, play performance scenes, news footage, photo gallery and more.

HEAR ME OUT
Mary Lambert, You+Me by
Chris AzzopArdi
MARY LAMBERT, HEART ON MY SLEEVE o One chorus did wonders for Mary Lambert, the guest vocalist professing romantic interest in a girl on Macklemore’s “Same Love.” The Seattle slam poet was nominated for two Grammys, a performer at the actual ceremony, and now this: her first full-length on a major label. The album addresses her butt (which she loves), how she has bipolar disorder, and her inability to think straight (because “I’m so gay”), so Heart on My Sleeve — how apropos. And that’s only the first track. With a pop, Mika-like bounce and an all-around celebratory vibe, “Secrets” rummages through Lambert’s closet in the most bold and beautiful of way--and then to let you know she doesn’t take herself too seriously, she giggles. It’s a telling gesture, since a lot of Lambert’s debut is, much like “Same Love,” designed to be lyrically heavy--themes of self-image and personal catharsis abound-but radio-friendly. She’s exposed on “Ribcage,” a hypnotic electro slow-burner with a rap cameo from K. Flay, and even if it reads like Live Journal poetry, you can’t help but be charmed by the openheartedness of “Monochromatic.” And then
there’s “Jessie’s Girl.” Lamenting atop piano, the original song is ebbed to a crawl as she turns the buoyant ’80s classic into an aching ballad. Throughout the album, Lambert asks for your ears and gives you her heart. As long as she’s this sincere, it’s a fair trade. Grade: B YOU+ME, ROSE AVE. o You asked for it, and the lesbian gods listened. Having already created musical magic with the Indigo Girls on their George W. Bush slam, the lo-fi “Dear Mr. President,” Pink’s first folk release-- a joint project with singer-songwriter Dallas Green (collectively known as You+Me)--is the result of the collaborative power of prayer. Not that she’s been slacking pop-wise, but Pink’s sinewy voice – a trove of raw emotions – was always better served by a less-frilly sound (to remind you: listen to “Family Portrait” and “Dear Diary” off of Missundaztood ). Now, after two decades of telling guys to suck it and proving herself a bona fide circus act, we have rose ave., a come-down that lands her right in your living room--a long-overdue outing marked with high expectations that meets very few of them. The problem: the
songs. With the writing front and center, pretty harmonies and Pink unplugged can only do so much when sentiments about eternal love and hope--and all those things you feel walking through the greeting card aisle--are as broad as these. Even with the lilting beauty “You and Me” and “Open Door,” where the lyrics cut deeper, rose ave. is a personal project that doesn’t feel very personal. An album better in theory. Grade: C+
Also Out BETTY WHO, TAKE ME WHEN YOU GO o Cue your happy dance. Betty Who is taking you to the floor and giving you all the good feels with her debut, a disc full of sweet-butsurface pop confections – think aural Cotton Candy – as charming as the same-sex Home Depot flash mob proposal she soundtracked. But “Somebody Loves You” isn’t Betty’s only infectiously cute moment. The synth-tastic ’80s-influenced “Glory Days” sounds like it should accompany the credits of a Molly Ringwald film, and the funky “Just Like Me” is a lotta fun. If only there were more to savor. ANNIE LENNOX, NOSTALGIA o Oh, she’ll put a spell on you, all right. Annie Lennox likely already has, but now she’s literal about it with “I Put a Spell On You,” one of ten classic recreations off the icon’s second covers album (her first, Medusa, was released in 1995). The other selections from the Great American Songbook thrive because two words: Annie Lennox. Her voice is a godsend, and if you don’t get goose bumps hearing her give life to “Georgia on My Mind” and “God Bless the Child,” check your pulse. Rocky Horror Picture Show was written by English-born New Zealander Richard O’Brien and depicts the sexual awakening of a conservative couple thanks to a dominating transsexual. Justin Hayward o As part of The Moody Blues, Justin Hayward composed many different classic songs, including “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” “The Voice,” and “Your Wildest Dreams.” He’s approaching half a century in the music industry, a feat in and of itself. Throughout those fifty years he’s done it all: fronting popular symphonic rock bands, solo work, and even writing music for television and film (including the song “Something Evil, Something Dangerous” for the film Howling IV: The Original Nightmare). Expect some classics, some new songs, and stories from his long history in the biz. 8:00 p.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE Eighth St. Fort Lauderdale. 33304. theguymag

TRAVEL
Surf’s Up! By Rick kaRlin
o
Michael Sam, Ian Thorpe, Amelie Mauresmo, Tom Daley, Brittney Griner, Megan Rapinoe… the list of professional, out athletes keeps growing, but that still doesn’t mean it’s always easy to be openly gay in sport. Thomas Castets, founder of GaySurfers.net, said in “Out in the Line-Up,” his documentary about homophobia in the surfing community, “We are all quite aware of the prejudice and discrimination against LGBT people in sports, but I hadn’t necessarily considered surfing as one of the last “bastions” of homophobia.” Castets asked members of his on-line LGBT surfing community for suggestions to improve this situation. “After running a survey on www.GaySurfers.net,” he said, “We found that gay surfers really wanted us to create surf trips with other gay surfers.” The documentary also inspired Marta Dalla Chiesa of Brazil Ecojourneys to action, “It was a real eye-opener for our company. It inspired us to reach out and partner with GaySurfers. There are a lot of people out there who would like to be surfing but are holding back because of homophobia they’ve encountered. Surfing amongst friends allows them to live their dream.” After a successful first run year, Castets and his company have partnered with Brazil Ecojourneys to organize a week of surfing, relaxing and yoga in Praia do Rosa in South Brazil from Oct. 25 through Nov. 1 again this year. The week’s activities begin with a two-night stay in Florianopolis, known as a gay friendly resort town, the Fire Island of Brazil, if you will. The group is then transported to Praia do Rosa, on the southern coast of Santa Catarina, famous for its perfect waves, its rustic-chic guesthouses and restaurants. On the first day, between checking in at the townhouse accommodations in Florianopolis and the welcome dinner the first night, the afternoon is open for free exploration. After dinner, an optional nightlife tour focusing on GLBT friendly spots will be available. Sure to be among them are Bar do Deca (aka Bar

on the Beach) with its DJs spinning from afternoon until late night. Bar do Deca (97 Rua Rita Lourenço da Silveira, 55-48-32336507) is right on gay Mole Beach. Right in downtown Florianópolis, the Concorde Club (729 Rio Branco, 55-48-3024-4969) is the hot dance club. Barbarella Lounge (351 Rua Saldanha Marinho, 55-48-3207-566) is a polysexual playground for boys, girls and whatever kinky things they like to do. Mix Café (47 Centro, 55-48-3324-0102) features EDM and drag shows as well live music. Rancho do Maneca (1 Campeche, 55-48-32349295) is a meeting point of bears, daddies and their fans. Since dinner the second night is not included, you may want to check out Bar do Vadinho (305 Pântano do Sul, 55-48-32377305) for its reasonably priced seafood or, if you prefer something fancier, head to Ostradamus (7640 Reibeirão da Ilha, 55-48-33375711). Located right on the beach with a pier leading out into the ocean, it’s known for the best oysters in town and huge portions. On Monday, after breakfast, the group is transported to Praia do Rosa, checking in at Pousada Casa do Ceo (Ibiraquera, 5548-3355-6677). After check-in there’s an introduction for beginners and evaluation for more experienced surfers. The following four days feature breakfast followed by threehour surf sessions each morning. Afternoons are left free for more surfing, shopping or relaxing at the pool. An early evening yoga session is scheduled, after which most participants gather for dinner and a night on the town. Check out Lua Marinha (Estrada Geral de Ibiraquera, 55-48-3354-0613) for incredible seafood dishes. On Thursday, Oct. 30 after breakfast the group departs for a full-day “surfari.” The group’s leader will take participants on a tour exploring the Southern Coast of Santa Catarina, for the trip’s pentultimate surfing adventure. Then it’s on to Farol de Santa Marta, a remote fishing village where depending theguymag

upon conditions, participants may also have the opportunity to interact with Southern Right Whales and Laguna Dolphins. Friday, Oct. 31, offers one final surf session, a free afternoon and a farewell dinner. The next morning after breakfast, it will be time to check out and catch a transfer back to Florianopolis airport. FITNESS
The Lowdown on Carbohydrates! by Tom
bonanTi
o
Frankly, I am sick of all the bad press that carbohydrates are getting these days. Sure, eating too many carbs will make you fat, but overeating in any capacity will pack on the pounds. Some popular fad diets stress cutting back so severely on carbs that many uninformed folks have begun to blame their “battle-of-the-bulge” on this poor misunderstood macronutrient. Get this right. Carbohydrates are your friends. Without the fuel that they provide to your body, your butt is going to drag, at work, in the gym and at play. Furthermore eliminating carbs can actually damage your health. Carbohydrates in the form of fruits, vegetables and grains provide energy as your body breaks them down to form glucose. Whatever glucose you don’t use is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscle tissues. Muscles horde two thirds of this glycogen, using it to fuel daily activities, including your workouts. The liver holds the rest and releases glycogen as glucose when the brain and other organs need energy. If your carb intake is consistently low, you won’t have enough glucose to satisfy the body’s energy needs. When that happens, the body breaks down protein and fat for energy. Translated, this means that when you don’t eat enough carbs you can lose valuable lean muscle tissue as well as the ability to think and function clearly. Carbs are crucial, but be careful not to overindulge. When glycogen stores are maxed out, excess carbs are stored as fat. Speaking of fat, without enough carbs in your diet, your body cannot burn fat no matter how dynamic your aerobic program may be. Not all carbs are created equal. Simple carbs consist mostly of simple sugar. Complex carbs provide healthy doses of starch, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Clearly, complex carbs are a superior food source. Complex carbohydrates like whole grain cereals, breads, beans, and many fruits and veggies, provide a steadier, longer lasting supply of energy. This is because they take time to break down and metabolize. This process releases glucose into the blood stream more gradually,
share with us on guymag.net
providing you with a steady supply of energy for longer periods of time. Don’t be confused by the glycemic effect of carbohydrates. The glycemic effect of a food is how fast and high your blood sugar rises after you eat it and how quickly your body brings glucose levels back to normal. Simple carbs cause an immediate spike in blood sugar and insulin levels followed by an immediate drop or “crash”, as I call it. Complex carbs are assimilated more gradually releasing energy over sustained periods of time. It’s not just whether a carb is simple or complex that determines the glycemic effect, but a number of other factors such as how a food is cooked and which foods are present in the stomach at the same time come into play. Its helps to know what sort of glycemic effect different foods have upon the body. Low or moderate glycemic index complex carbs like yams, baked beans, apples, peaches, oatmeal, and whole grain rice and cereals are best eaten earlier in the day to sustain energy especially on workout days. High glycemic foods are great after an intense workout – they quickly replenish hungry muscles with glycogen. Try eating oranges, bananas, grapes, rice and pasta after a “kick-ass” workout. Remember, in order to look and feel like a champion, you have to eat like one! For more great workout and nutrition tips, contact Tom Bonanti at trainertomb@aol.com.
