Senior VP and COO o FORT LAUDERDALE, FL— I am thrilled to be able to announce the appointment of award-winning writer Richard Hack to the position of Publisher of Guy Magazine. Richard continues as editor-in chief of the publication as well as Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of our sister publication, the Agenda newspaper. At the same time, it is exciting to announce the promotion of Kevin Hopper to the new post of Senior VP and COO of MMP Worldwide Inc. while remaining as Guy Magazine and Agenda newspaper’s Associate Publisher. As the company embarks on our most aggressive growth effort since our founding in 2007, Richard will be in charge of the day-to-day operation of Guy — Fort Lauderdale, Oakland Park and Wilton Manors’ #1 Entertainment Magazine. A complete redesign of the publication is in the works for the full-color magazine, which is published weekly on Thursday. Richard has written 17 books, three mini-series, and over two-dozen audio recordings including the New York Times bestselling Hughes: The Private Diaries, Memos and Letters which was used as the basis of the film The Aviator. His later book, Puppetmaster: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover was translated on the big screen as J. Edgar starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. He has written about the rich and notorious in numerous other biographies including Duchess of Death: The Unauthorized Biography of Agatha Christie and the Michael Jackson story Jackson Family Values. A fitness fanatic, Richard’s current book is The Baby Boomers’ Guide to the Fountain of Youth. Richard served as the West Coast Programming Editor of TV Guide at a time when it was the largest magazine in the world (with 40 million readers and 50 separate local editions per week). Later, he served as the TV Editor for the Hollywood Reporter daily trade paper, producing 3,000 columns syndicated to over 600 newspapers across the country. He has appeared on over 200 television programs and series including Oprah Winfrey, Larry King Live, 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, Good Morning America, Today Show, Tonight Show, Entertainment Tonight, Inside Edition and Charlie Rose among others. Kevin helped launch The Express Gay News in 1999. The level of journalistic integrity and investigative reporting was well received in the then-underserved LGBT news market. The publication was acquired by Window Media in 2003 and Kevin was promoted to Publisher. The following year, Kevin negotiated the accusation of another local title, 411 Magazine. Working for Window Media for ten years, Kevin went on to run both their Florida and Atlanta offices and sales director of their national men’s magazine, Genre. Kevin was then hired by Dynamix Unified Solutions to run their North American sales channels. The company specializes in communication, data recovery, and security services. The company’s sales grew exponentially during Kevin’s two years with the company. In 2010, Kevin joined Bobby Blair to create Florida Agenda, and Guy Magazine. His experience in sales, marketing and promotions combined with his eye for creative and editorial innovation have helped shape the brands and create value in the competitive south Florida market. Beauty and Brutality by

Titular slumbering Princess Aurora (voiced by Mary Costa) may not look a year over 16, but Walt Disney’s animated classic Sleeping Beauty (Disney), now available in a Diamond Edition Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD version, turned 55 this year. Of course, this occurred in the same year that the unfortunate live-action Maleficent malignancy (see below) was released. Fear not, “Sleeping Beauty” remains untarnished. Newfangled digital tech makes Sleeping Beauty look as good as new. The tale of shunned fairy Maleficent (voiced by Eleanor Audley) who places a curse on a baby princess and the efforts to prevent the curse from occurring, have serious and comic effects. Princess Aurora, raised in secrecy in a cottage by three good fairies (our favorite kind!) – Flora (voiceover queen Verna Felton), Fauna (voiced by Barbara Jo Allen) and Merryweather (voiced by Barbara Luddy) – accidentally meets the man of her dreams, dreamy Prince Phillip (voiced by Bill Shirley), but doesn’t realize he’s her betrothed until it’s too late. To be honest, Sleeping Beauty has enough scary moments to spook an adult, let alone children. Maleficent’s malevolence knows no bounds, as she makes reference to hell (!), turns into a dragon, keeps Prince Phillip in bondage (!) and generally wreaks thorny and stormy havoc on the kingdom. In the pre-PC era in which this ‘toon was made, intoxication and incapacitation are sources of silliness, but there’s a reason this Disney classic has endured and this Diamond Edition is as good a reason as any to experience it again (and again). “Beauty-ful” bonus material includes deleted scenes, karaoke and several featurettes.

Maleficent (Disney), a movie that belongs in the same Disney trash heap as 2013’s Oz The Great and Powerful and 2010’s Alice In Wonderland, is a malfunctioning reimagining of a classic character’s beginnings. A derivative and clichéd story that takes far too many liberties, weighed down by tired special

effects (haven’t we seen these mythical creatures somewhere before?), Maleficent raises a frightening question. Has Disney run out of fresh ideas? Intending to tell an “old story anew” (because who would actually want to see a new story anew?), Maleficent begins with the discord between two kingdoms, lazily described through narration. One kingdom, occupied by humans, wants nothing more than to add to their empire. The other kingdom, The Moors, bursts at the seams with peaceful and magical creatures basking in the glories of nature. As a young girl, the winged and horned Maleficent encounters her first human, Stephan. An unlikely friendship develops. As they grow older, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie, born, I say, born to play this part) remains true to her spirit, while Stephan (a miserably miscast Sharlto Cotheguymag

pley) goes the way of many humans (take your pick from bad, wrong, greedy or evil). When an embarrassed and dying king (whose attempt to invade the moors was halted by Maleficent) offers his kingdom to whomever can slaughter the fairy and avenge his crown, Stephan uses his established relationship with Maleficent to trick her, drug her and then clip her wings. With Maleficent’s wings in hand, Stephan ascends to the throne. Meanwhile, Maleficent convalesces in agony. When King Stephan and his wife have a baby – a girl named Aurora – Maleficent gets her revenge by cursing the baby. On her 16th birthday, Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel’s needle and fall into an endless sleep, thus becoming Sleeping Beauty. what develops between Maleficent, who has been keeping a watchful eye on the future princess, the teenage Aurora (Elle Fanning), who mistakenly thinks that Maleficent is her fairy godmother (cute, huh?). The introduction of the very handsome Prince Phillip (Brenton Thwaites), turns out to be a red herring. The true love’s kiss that awakens Aurora from the sleep of her irrevocable curse comes from the most unpredictable place (yeah, right!). First-time director Robert Stromberg probably hoped that Maleficent would have the same appeal as say, the stage musical Wicked. The closest it comes is to that is that it’s wickedly awful. Included in the Blu-ray combo pack bonus features are several deleted scenes, numerous featurettes including “Classic Couture,” focused on Maleficent’s fashion accessories, and more. theguymag

Before the whole world knew her as “The Divine Miss M,” Bette Milder was ours. In the early ’70s, bawdy, belt-y Bette was performing for the NYC bathhouse boys, and don’t think she’s forgotten it, either. “I mean, if I had a nickel for everybody that said they saw me at the baths,” says Midler in our recent interview, “I would be Joe Billionaire by now!” Midler would go on to global fame, reaching beyond music to become a celebrated name in film, television and on the stage, winning Grammys, Golden Globes, Emmys and a special Tony Award. And now, the eagerly awaited return of one of show business’s most versatile performers has arrived with the release of her first album in eight years, It’s the Girls, a tribute to some of the greatest female harmonies in history. Midler talked about the anticipated tour she’s about to launch in support of this latest effort – and the truck full of hairpieces she’s schlepping along (“Cher has 55 wigs; why can’t I?!”). She also touched on her early support of the LGBT community, the degradation of the word “diva” and her plan to avenge Mae West for sending her a cease and desist. You know how much we gays love our girls. How much do you keep your gay following in mind when you make music, particularly with It’s the Girls? To tell you the truth, it really didn’t cross my mind. The music I chose is music I had a lot of affection for. Some of these songs I’ve known since I was a little girl. I feel like if I have a strong feeling for this music, people will also have a strong feeling for it. The truth is, you cannot pander. You have to go with your gut and your heart and be true to yourself, and hope that people like it. They generally do. You were welcoming to the gay community at a time when many weren’t. When you look back at your early support for the LGBT community, what do you recall as being the moment that galvanized you to stand up as an ally? I had been in the theater for a long time, from the time I was a young person, and I’d always known gay people — and they were just, like, share with us on guymag.net

gay people! Just ordinary friends. People that you knew, and that you never thought twice about. You didn’t think of them as being different, although looking back on my high school years, I think there were a lot of people in my high school – this is so many years ago; this is 50 years ago – who probably were gay and didn’t ever talk about it. As a matter of fact, one of the kids that I went to school with, an enormously popular guy – really funny, really wonderful – who was in my Latin class, wrote me before he passed away from AIDS to tell me that he had been gay and that he had contracted AIDS. So, I mean, what was the moment when I said that it was time to stand up? Oh my god – it never occurred to me not to. These were friends of mine – people that I had worked with, people that I had danced with, people I had broken bread with my whole life – so it never occurred to me not to. You do what you do because there’s nothing else to do. There’s no other option. But to stand up for people who were seen as pariahs – that was taboo then. Did you experience any backlash for supporting gay people at the time? You know, I might have, but I was very wellprotected in those days. I actually did not feel it. I remember the first big benefit that anyone had done for gay rights (“A Star Spangled Night for Rights” in 1977). I remember the poster, and it was at the Hollywood Bowl. Lily (Tomlin), Richard Pryor and Tom Waits were on the program, but nobody ever said LGBT then. That didn’t exist. So that night, Tom Waits sang “Standin’ on the Corner” and then Richard Pryor came out and Richard Pryor started off great. I don’t even know if this is in your history books or anything, but he started off great and then worked himself up into a real frenzy as only he could. He said that the gay community had never supported civil rights and, “Where were you when we were riding and they were kicking us to the curb and we were being fire hosed?” Then he said, “You all can kiss my rich, black ass!” and he stomped off the stage. And I had to follow him! I mean, I’m just striptheguymag

INTERVIEW ping it bare, but imagine what happened. So I went out and said, “You all can kiss my rich, white ass,” and of course then everything was much better, but it was such a curious evening. I think Stonewall, in the middle ’60s, was the first time (the gay community) fought back, but, you know, in history everyone says “I was there.” I mean, if I had a nickel for everybody that said they saw me at the baths, I would be Joe Billionaire by now! I would be playing at Madison Square Garden instead of a rickety-tickety little bathhouse on 73rd Street! OK, let’s move on. I really do think that this big fundraiser in the late ’70s was a little shot across the bow too, and then not long after that, in the middle ’80s, AIDS came down and it was so horrible and, even though he knew so many gay people, Ronald Reagan did nothing. Nothing!

you’re seeing now? It was a really wholesome era in retrospect. It was sexy, but it was not blatant. It was intriguing and it was mysterious because it wasn’t flat out in your face. It was also supremely elegant. You know, I talk about this with my girlfriend Toni Basil, another gay icon: Those voices, the black voices, were not familiar to white ears. They simply never heard those voices singing harmony before. You never really heard those really strong, vibrant black girls singing until The Shirelles, The Crystals, The Chiffons, and then the Motown girls, and the girls who came after: Sister Sledge, the Emotions and down the line. The Honeycombs? Is there a group called The Honeycombs? I personally wanted to cover (the Weather Girls’) “Two Tons o’ Fun” but everyone said, “No, no, you can’t cut that,” so I didn’t.

If a gay fan approaches you, which of your projects would they most likely mention? You wanna know the truth? Hocus Pocus. Honestly, I cannot believe what happened with Hocus Pocus. I’m just dumbfounded by the number of people who mention Hocus Pocus – and they’re young people!

You cover TLC’s ’90s pop hit “Waterfalls,” which famously dealt with HIV/ AIDS and safe sex. What significance does that song have for you? The first time I heard it I was really struck by it because it seemed like such an important song. To me, it was one of the saddest songs I’d ever heard on pop radio. So, I wanted to do a stripped-down version of it because I really wanted the story to be clear. I had thought about it for a long time, and when I first heard it, I was so moved by it. I shed a tear myself, and I always use that as a kind of litmus test. If it really moves me, I can bring something to it; I can make it my own.

Was your Halloween costume from this year — when you went as your Hocus Pocus character, Winifred Sanderson – the closest we’ll ever get to a sequel? I tell them all you must write the Walt Disney Company because I don’t have anything to say about it – but they do! The girls and I have talked about it, and we all laugh and say, “Yeah, we’ll wait for that phone call.” But sure, we would all do it. We had a wonderful time. It’s the Girls celebrates and honors female performers who branded a very particular image. I mean, they definitely were not twerking. Ugh. I don’t know what to tell you. I just saw that Jennifer Lopez video with Iggy Azalea – “Booty booty booty...” – and oh, girls, please! What can you say? Girls... please. How do you compare the girl groups from the era you’re channeling to what

What about the song in particular hit you? Did you know the original song was inspired by the AIDS-stricken and promoted safe sex? I do remember that, but it was a dance song. It was for the dance halls. It was for the discos, and yet it really is a song about the mother who can’t do anything, who’s completely helpless in the face of this. I felt that, and that’s the way I wanted to interpret it. I think it worked out wonderfully. You’ve been a self-proclaimed diva. In fact, your 1997 HBO special was called Diva Las Vegas, and during your Las Vegas spectacle at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, The Showgirl Must Go On, you said you were the “People’s theguymag

INTERVIEW Diva.” At this point, has the meaning of the word “diva” changed so much that you no longer identify with it? It’s a word that is just so overused that it’s really lost all currency. It no longer has any meaning at all. Any old slob on the Internet can say, “Well, I’m a ‘diva,’” and have some people believing it, but not me. In the old, old, old, old days – you know, during the Civil War when I was just a child – it meant “the star.” It was an opera term, and it meant a female opera singer who really could carry the whole opera, and it has been so degraded now. It’s a shame because it really was a wonderful word. What does “diva” mean to you now? It means nothing. It has absolutely no meaning at all. “Divine” still has meaning because there’s still a church, but “diva” has absolutely no meaning at all. When you hit the road for your first tour in 10 years, how many wigs are you bringing along with you? Oh my god – I have a truck! I have a whole truck. Well, Cher always does. Cher has 55 wigs; why can’t I? To tell you the truth, I have been wearing wigs since, let’s see, the very, very old days. Since I first started making motion pictures – movies! – I’ve always worn wigs. Always, always, always. It really does spare you. It really is a time-saver, and I really enjoy them. And I love makeup and hair. I just love it, love it, love it! I love becoming somebody that I’m not. As they used to say about Mae West: “A little old lady used to come in onto the set and go into the trailer, and four hours later Mae West would come out.” It’s really kind of like that. A lot of drag queens would agree with you and Mae. What advice do you have for a guy who wants to dress in Bette drag? A good pair of shoes – a really good pair of shoes – because you’ll really hurt yourself. You’ll hurt your joints. And a serious undergarment. And if your panties fall down all around your feet, step out of them and keep on singing.

That’s good advice even if you’re not a drag queen. (Laughs) Well, I’ve been accused of (being a drag queen) many times! But I take it with a grain of salt. To me, it’s a supreme compliment. Any chance you’ll revisit songs by The Sanderson Sisters or the ladies of The First Wives Club? They are, after all, girl groups. I really do have to think about this. If I go out around Halloween, I’ll have to put some effort into it. I’ve got some surprises up my sleeve. You mentioned Mae West, and it was announced in late 2013 that you were cast as Mae in an upcoming HBO biopic. How’s that project coming along? I’ll tell you something: The script just came in, but I haven’t seen it. I’m waiting for the director, Billy Friedkin (director of The Exorcist), to make his notes, and then he’s gonna hand it off to me and we’ll see what happens. I’m really looking forward to it because I’ve been reading and doing my due diligence. She’s such a fabulous – she’s so fucking nuts! I mean, she was so insane. And you know, when I started my career all those many moons ago, I used to do an impersonation of Mae West, and I did it on The Johnny Carson Show – my very first Johnny Carson Show – and she sent me a letter telling me to cease and desist, which I swear to god I still have. I didn’t understand it at the time. I thought, “What’s wrong with her?” Now that I’ve done all the reading and am of a certain age, I totally get it. She was protecting what she had made. She was protecting her creation. That was practically a trademark and she didn’t want anyone to mishandle her creation. Ultimately, she was right. So I bowed to her wishes; I ceased and desisted. And I think it’s so amusing. (Laughs) After all that, if the script actually comes to the point of doing it, it certainly would be revenge. Take that, Mae!

In our last two columns, we took a look at Maui and Oahu, Hawaii’s most popular islands for GLBT tourists. In this column, we explore some of the less touristy islands of Hawaii, skipping Lanai, primarily a pineapple plantation and two golf resorts.

Hawaii Island

Also known as The Big Island, Hawaii is larger than the other islands combined. Hawaii Island has two active volcanoes, soaring mountain peaks, striking lava formations and beautiful sandy beaches. It is also home to some of the state’s biggest cities, has plenty of nightlife options and an active GLBT community.

Kauai

Kauai was Hawaii’s original premiere visitor destination, and was the first place in Hawaii to be visited by European explorers. It is a draw for tourists wanting to explore nature and wildlife more than wild nightlife. Kauai is home to grand waterfalls, narrow sea cliffs, crystal white sand beaches, and dark red clay canyons. Because the island is so small, there is not really much of a gay scene, but there’s still an active GLBT community, which gathers at the Sand Bar at the Aston Islander hotel for happy hour.

The fifth largest island in the chain is covered with lush vegetation and wet forests that receive over 300 inches of rainfall per year on the eastern half of the island, while the western half of the island is nearly barren. Small and visitorfriendly, Molokai is good for those looking for a low-key escape from the touristy hubbub you’ll find on some of the other islands. As for GLBT community, you won’t really find much of an organized one. You may meet some folks at One Alii I Park or Dixie Maru Beach.

Tortilla Republic (2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka St. Koloa, 808742-8884) is a small chain (with locations in Laguna Beach and West Hollywood as well) which offers inventive Mexican fare, utilizing all natural meats and organic and locally grown produce. Gaylords at Kilohana (3-2087 Kaumualii Hwy., Lihue, 808-2459593) is an upscale restaurant with a nice wine list and is a bit more upscale. The extensive brunch buffet on Sunday is fabulous, and don’t pass up the legendary banana cream pie!

Lava’s (2440 Hoonani Rd., Poipu Beach, Koloa, 808-742-1661) in the Sheraton Kauai Resort is a great place to catch a great sunset while enjoying a cocktail, especially the Lilikoi Lemonade.

207 Kaunakakai Condo (1000 Kam V Hwy, Kaunakakai, 541563-4209), the one bedroom (king bed), one bath condo has a wonderful ocean view, a pool and is centrally located. Most of your dining options will be at the few hotels on the island. Kualapuu Cookhouse (102 Farrington Ave, Kualapuu, 808-567-9655) is by far the best non-hotel affiliated restaurant on the island. Doesn’t look like much, but you’ll leave happy and full. Paddler’s Inn (10 Mohala St., Kaunakakai, 808-553-5256) offers good, plain cooking, seafood is usually a good bet and Outpost Natural Foods’ (70 Makaena Pl, Kaunakakai, 808-553-3377) lunch counter keeps odd hours, but the burrito is pretty damn good.

Get on the Ball with Your Core Training! by Tom

Looking for a way to put some bounce into your tired old routine in the gym? Try adding a Swiss Ball to turn easy exercises into more challenging maneuvers. This handy little item is one of the most useful tools you can possess whether you work out at home or in some posh health club. Balancing on a ball as you crunch, press, curl, etc., helps bring more muscle groups into play and forces you to concentrate on maintaining proper form and balance. In fact, performing resistance exercises on a Swiss Ball is a more effective way to train for sports, i.e. track and field, martial arts, etc., since in any kind of competition you are in motion and often off balance. So put aside your trusty weight bench and challenge yourself to work out harder. There’s no better way to train those important core muscles like the abs, obliques, and the quadratus lumborum, etc. than by using the Swiss Ball. Begin by doing crunches for your rectus abdominis (your 6 pack) on a ball. Lie on your back across the ball with legs bent, feet flat and hands behind your head. Proceed by raising head and shoulders up a few inches. Pause, squeeze your abs and return to starting position. To add resistance clasp a dumbbell or weight plate to your chest as you crunch. Perform as many reps as it takes to get a nice burn. Try reverse crunches by laying flat on the mat with your heels on the ball then crunch as you move the ball simultaneously by bringing your knees up toward your elbows. Don’t forget your obliques or your “side abs.” Lie on your right side over the ball, left leg over right, hands by the sides of the head, elbows out. Proceed to bend upward as high as possible. Pause, return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. Lie on your left side for another set bending up the other way. Swiss ball squats are a great safe way to

build up butt and legs without chugging a loaded barbell across the back of your neck and shoulders. Stand with the ball between your back (actually the small of your back) and the wall. Squat slowly down until the backs of the thighs are parallel to the floor. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. This is by far the safest way to do squats and you will never have to worry about injuries to your knees and lower back with this exercise. Make push-ups meaner and more effective by using the ball. Place your hands on top of the ball with arms bent at a 90-degree angle, legs out behind you and extending up on toes. Proceed to push up to arms’ length. Pause. Then return to starting position. Perform 8-12 reps. To make dumbbell curls, shoulder and chest presses, front and side raises more challenging, try them seated on a ball. Of course, use lighter weights at first. Use your Swiss Ball on a mat area for added safety. Swiss Balls come in sizes small, medium and large and can be purchased at any sporting goods store. A Chi-Town Boy Comes to the Gayborhood: Now, that’s “Progress” by

o Justin Romme, the founding General Manager of Progress Bar South Florida, moved here several months ago to supervise the construction and opening of Greater Fort Lauderdale’s newest gay watering hole. It’s safe to say he’s found a few differences. “Let me say emphatically how much I love being here,” Romme insists. At 34, he hasn’t lost his boyish sense of wonder, and it comes across in conversation as he compares his new home with his former one. “Remember: Chicago is the third largest city in the U.S.,” Romme explains. “There’s around three million people there, and in the metro area—‘Chicagoland’—there are another six million.” Now compare that with Wilton Manors (2010 Census population count: 11,632). A newcomer could be forgiven for experiencing culture shock. But Romme says he wasn’t fazed. “It’s a lot easier here to get to know your customers on a face-toname basis a lot quicker,” he says, and is glad for it. There are other differences, besides the weather. In Chicago, where he was born and raised, Romme says the pace is noticeably faster. Not so in the sub-tropics. “Down here, I notice that people aren’t in such a hurry to get things done—but that’s not necessarily a bad thing,” he’s quick to add. Romme says that for a place that’s so geographically compact, “there’s a gay bar for just about every taste—Bears, men in leather, older guys.” But he says that Progress Bar South Florida hopes to fill a niche. “We obviously would like for everyone to pass through our doors, but we have designed ‘Progress’ with a younger sensibility in mind.” The owners of Progress operate two successful operations in the

Chicagoland area, Progress Bar Chicago and Phoenix Bar and Nightclub. Romme says the reputation of their Chicago club provided some earlier marketing and promotion for their Wilton Manors bar. Their newest location occupies the space formerly occupied by the area’s only lesbian-themed bar. Romme is aware that some people were resistant to the idea of bar for gay men opening in what was once a ‘hallowed’ spot for some locals. “We love the lesbian bar-goers,” Romme explains. “If I have my way, we will have gay women in Progress every night. And we are absolutely promoting the hell out of our Wednesday. But having been in this business for some time now, I am aware of the differences between operating a bar that caters to gay men and one that caters gay women. The latter is a more challenging environment.” Romme points out the recent closing of the last lesbian bar in San Francisco as an example of the challenges of operating a saloon that serves the Sisterhood. Along with Wednesdays, Progress has developed additional theme nights during the week, including Tuesdays “Undressed,” featuring go-go boy dancers, and Sunday Tea Dance, which recently kicked off to a packed house. “The response has been humbling,” says a pleased Romme. “The response from the community has been unreal, and we are very grateful.”

Part of the appeal of Progress is that the bar has been completely renovated (“we gutted the place,” Romme explains) from top to bottom, giving it a look that is very appealing to the 21 to 35 year old crowd to whom the bar is catering. It’s something that was more easily accomplished because Progress’ owners also own the property. Romme hopes that the community will continue to embrace Progress, and he says that he and the club are committed to giving back to the community which supports them. The bar plans to host fundraisers and activities in support of many of the heritage events that make South Florida’s LGBT community so vibrant and the envy of many other places. “We have already contributed to the Pride Center at Equality Park, which is such a terrific organization,” Romme notes. “I have to say that this area is well-served by the charities and service organizations that help those in need and those who are looking for support. We hope to continue that tradition through our own efforts at Progress on behalf of those people.” Romme is aware that the eyes of South Florida are on him and Progress. He says that he and the club are up for the challenge. “The weather, the people, the beach—what’s not to love about this place?” Romme asks. From the positive response, the crowds at his new bar seem to be asking the same thing.

Mark Haines Killed After Being Struck By Truck in Keys by

DUCK KEY, FL–Mark Haines, the CEO and founder of Mark’s List, the LGBT website, was stuck by a Dodge Ram truck and killed instantly last evening while on U.S. 1 walking home from dinner. Mark had just finished participating in the first day of the charity fundraiser Smart Ride, having bicycled on Friday from to Miami to Hawk’s Cay halfway through the 165 mile twoday ride. After being hit by the Dodge Ram, Haines was thrown into the center lane and hit by an SUV swearing to miss the truck. Subsequently, he was hit by a Ford Expedition swearing to avoiding the SUV. A notice from his grief-stricken family read, “I am heartbroken to report that Mark Haines, my uncle, the founder and owner of Mark’s List, and a long-time leader in the Florida GLBT community, was killed last night. And yet, I tenuously reach for some ray of happiness in knowing that he died while doing what he loved most. He was participating in the Smart Ride with his brother (my father), Stephen Lang (long-time Mark’s List photographer), and hundreds of others. He died instantly, hit by a car while walking home from dinner after the best day and the best ride of his life. Bobby Blair founder of MMP Worldwide Inc., Guy Magazine and Agenda newspaper, said that he will always remember Mark for his passion. “He was a passionate businessman and a passionate leader within our LBGT community, quick to help those in need and constantly giving of himself. All of us at the MMP family reach out to Mark’s family and friends as we join them in grieving their loss.” Mark was born in Michigan where he lived

before joining his father in Brussels, Belgium during his junior year in high school. He attended the American School in Brussels. “I traveled all over Europe,” Mark said in a newspaper interview in 2012. While there, he explored the European continent. “I think this is where I caught the bug for exploring fun and interesting places,” said Haines. “I traveled all over Europe. One of my favorite memories is sneaking into a night club in Russia when I was only 14 years old.” In 2003, Mark moved to Florida where he worked for the A.C. Nielson Co. compliling ratings for newspapers, radio and television. It was then that he began dabbling with the Internet, creating Mark’s List as a way to break the boredom of his job. But 2006, the website was profitable enough that Mark was able to leave the Nielson Company. Funeral services will be announced.
