Adds His “Voice” to Gay Country Artists Coming Out Day is in October, but two country music o National artists waited until late November to share their good news. Ty Herndon was the first one out of the gate on November 20, followed shortly thereafter on the same day by Billy Gilman. Gilman, like fellow country diva LeAnn Rimes, got his big break when he was just a kid. Possessing a powerful voice and impressive vocal range, Gilman released his major-label debut album One Voice in 2000, at the age of 11. In addition to the titular hit, the album featured a shockingly spoton reading of Tammy Wynette’s “’Til I Can Make It On My Own.” That cover, sung with amazing authority, might qualify as an early clue that Gilman would someday come out as gay. Seriously, listen to the song. Gilman, who continued to release albums through the early part of the 21st century, is in the process of mounting a comeback. I spoke with Billy about coming out and his career in late November 2014. How does a Rhode Island native, a New Englander, become a Nashville star? Billy Gilman: I grew up singing country music. Country music is so huge in my neck of the woods, believe it or not. People find it hard to believe, but country music is big around here. There’s no memory of not having country music in my life. The Grand Ole Opry and watching the awards shows that would come on and listening to Garth Brooks and Pam Tillis, it was just part of my life and always has been. It’s easier than you think [laughs]. GS: As someone who got his start as a child star in country, did you ever cross paths with LeAnn Rimes, another country music child star, and was she someone you looked to as a role model? BG: Absolutely! LeAnn Rimes was so great to me, and we are still great friends to this day. I met her first when I was 11. I’m sure she took a liking to me because she saw me going through what she went through a few years before being a child herself. There’s a common factor with her and whatnot. She’s always been a great support system.

GS: Do you have any advice for budding child stars? BG: The one thing I always go back to is that you really have to love it. It has to be what you are; because there are going to be many wonderful opportunities. There are going to be huge ups and corresponding downs to a career. You have to love it to sustain yourself and to put up with what you’re going to have to put up with. If it’s what you are and you live and breathe it, like I have my whole life, you’ll be fine. You’re going to do well because you have what it takes. You can’t just wake up one day and go, “I’m going to be a singer!” It’s tougher than that. GS: On November 20th, history was made in Nashville and the realm of country music when you and Ty Herndon both came out as gay. You cited Ty in your coming out message. How did he help you through this? BG: It was amazing! I’ve known Ty for a while. He was on the same record label as I was a few years back. He’s a great singer. This was something that I have been going back and forth with for about a month. I was nervous and reluctant. You never know what’s going theguymag

INTERVIEW BG: I never thought of it because country is what I love. But having it be so difficult a situation, you have to be tough. If they still don’t understand, you have to move on. That’s just life and business. I would be saddened to know that country isn’t ready. Luckily my music does lean toward country-pop, so there is the potential for crossover if that should happen. But my love is for country and always will be. Hopefully, one day, this won’t be a problem. Pop music and dance music are great, too. They all cross paths now. Pop music is so vital in country music now. It all meshes together. But I think I will continue to make the music I’m making. to happen. I was set to do it that day and was reading Twitter and read the he had come out. I was like, “Oh, wow! This is very coincidental and very odd.” But things happen for a reason. He (Ty) really helped me push the pedal to further it. He put me into high gear. He gave me enough confidence to do what I needed to do. He’s a very brave person and a courageous artist. He did help immensely in my situation. My hat’s off to him and my thanks to him always for that. GS: How has the response been from your fans? BG: My fans have been amazing. Even people that kind of followed my career a little bit have been amazing. No matter what you do in life, it doesn’t matter if it was this situation or I wanted to change genres, whatever – someone is always going to have an opinion. You have to brace yourself for a good opinion or a bad one. Everyone is entitled to whatever they feel. You have to keep a positive head and do your thing. So far, the comments and support has been amazing and I’m so grateful for that. GS: How did your family react to your coming out? BG: My family was nothing but supportive. That was really amazing to me. It’s been nothing but positive in that respect. I’ve always been surrounded by support and nothing has changed. GS: I interviewed Ty yesterday and asked him this same question — was there ever a point that you considered recording and performing in a different genre, such as pop or dance, where there are more openly LGBT artists?

GS: Chely Wright, who came out a few years before you did, was the Grand Marshall of the Chicago Gay Pride in 2010. What would it mean to you to be a Grand Marshall of a gay pride parade? BG: I would, of course, be grateful. The important issue for me is to be a voice for so many young adults my age and older adults that are struggling, going through this situation, who may not have the love and support that I have. To advocate for a young woman or young man going through this in a part of the country that’s maybe a little more conservative or something. That is always my main goal, my main focus. To be a Grand Marshall or this or that, that’s an added bonus. The core of it is to be an advocate for people who don’t have a significant or big voice in the situation. It’s about coming together and creating one voice. GS: Would you ever perform at a Pride festival if you were asked? BG: Absolutely. If the situation is correct and it’s in a respectful manner. That’s how I’ve conducted my business for the past 15 years. I would have no problem doing that. It’s for the greater good and that’s what it’s about. GS: You mentioned your partner in your coming out video. With same-gender marriage continuing to make strides across the country, if at some point you and your partner were to marry, to what song would you like to walk down the aisle? BG: One of mine [laughs]! I hadn’t thought about that. “At Last,” maybe. No, I’m kidding [laughs]. theguymag

MLB’s ‘Ambassador for Inclusion’ Hits a Grand Slam by

During his entire baseball career, Billy Bean says he lived in a “tiny, dark closet.” In 1995, he walked away from the sport he loved. He felt he could no longer hide his sexuality. But he also believed he could not be out as a professional athlete. Bean went on to successful careers in radio, television, restaurants and real estate. Then last year – while he was attending the Nike-sponsored LGBT Sports Coalition meeting in Portland – Major League Baseball came calling. A high-ranking official admitted, “This phone call probably comes 15 years too late.” A month later, MLB made it official: Bean was named its first Ambassador for Inclusion. Underlying its importance, the announcement came on a big stage: during the annual AllStar game in Minneapolis. Bean’s new job highlights Major League Baseball’s evolution on LGBT issues, and its confidence in that path. A year ago, the organization formulated a policy prohibiting players from harassing and discriminating against others based on sexual orientation. Now they’ve named an openly gay former player to a league-wide position and given him wide latitude to figure out exactly what his job entails. The first thing Bean did was put together an “all-star team” of experts. Representatives from GLAAD, Athlete Ally, You Can Play, PFLAG and other groups made themselves available to help educate players. But as a former player himself, Bean knows that the demands on athletes’ time are great. So he’s reaching out further, to each MLB team and to their fans as well. He’s doing it like the singles hitter he was. Bean is not going for a dramatic home run; he’s spraying hits around the field. During the World Series, for instance, he met with San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer. In the midst of so many distractions – “the whole world was watching the team,” Bean notes – the executive listened, and told Bean how impor-

tant his work was. Then, Bean traveled to Phoenix for the annual meeting of all 30 MLB general managers. Later this winter he will be part of the Rookie Career Development Program, educating professional baseball’s youngest athletes about LGBT issues. He’s opening up dialogues with every team. Each has its unique culture. Teams like the Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs have created inclusive environments, and done outreach to LGBT fans. Many other teams, though “don’t discuss the subject much,” Bean says. “My job is to bring positive attention to it.” These days, people are willing to listen. “That’s the greatness of baseball,” says Bean. “They understand it’s not fair for one (gay) player to shoulder the burden of this new frontier. It’s important for an organization to understand that these issues impact and involve everyone.” Bean was not hired to work with the one or two MLB players who may be in the process of deciding whether to come out. His job is to theguymag

help the sport understand that there are gay players, executives, broadcasters and fans – in varying stages of “outness” – and to embrace everyone in the wide baseball community. Baseball has come a long ways from 1995, the year Bean retired. “If things were like this when I was playing, my life would’ve been very different,” he says. He points with pride to the New York Yankees. One of his first initiatives this summer was to take general manager Brian Cashman and assistant GM Jean Afterman to the Hetrick-Martin Institute – the nation’s largest social services agency for at-risk LGBT youth. The executives showed off their 2009 championship rings, then encouraged the teenagers to be true to themselves and follow their passions – wherever those might lead. “That’s the power of baseball,” Bean says. “It can be very exciting and inspiring. Our job now is to even the playing field, so that everyone feels they can participate.” A few months ago, at the LGBT Sports Coalition meeting in Portland, Bean met four college baseball players. to talk with a former Major Leaguer, they described their fulfilled, exciting lives as gay athletes today. “Ten years ago,” Bean says, “if you met people like that they’d be in dire circumstances. But the arc of the conversation has changed. I feel really grateful to be part of it.” MLB commissioner Bud Selig acknowledged the past when he introduced Bean to the media. “I wish our game had someone in place” to whom Bean could have turned as a player, Selig says. “A friend, listener, a source of support.” Billy Bean is doing exactly that today – not just for players, but coaches, managers, executives and fans as well. A Gym “Kingpin” Puts Muscle into Comfort Food by

o Riddle me this: How does one of the most-seen guys in the Gayborhood turn into the Invisible Man practically overnight? “Open a restaurant,” Bryan Nosal jokes. The owner of Kingpins Pizza & Wings in Wilton Manors is celebrating one year in business (okay, so it hasn’t been exactly “overnight”), and what a difference a year makes. Just over a year ago, Nosal was the General Manager of one of the area’s most popular fitness facilities, the former Island City Health and Fitness (now Steel Gym Fort Lauderdale), and his was a face that was seen daily by the hundreds of localresiding members who religiously attended the health club (for many, even more consistently than they bellied up to the local bars). “That was the fun part of working with Reece (Darham, the former owner) at Island City,” Nosal says. “Getting to meet so many great people, and making so many friends who have stayed friends.” Nosal moved to South Florida 15 years ago from St. Louis, Missouri. “I moved here to be with my first ex,” he admits with a laugh. It’s been a long and winding path for the boyish and modest Nosal, one that took him in 2003 to the then newly-opened Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, first as Human Resources Manager and later as Director of 24-Hour Restaurant Operations. In that position, an energetic and visionary Nosal oversaw the creation and implementation of innovative menus that introduced fresh, inspiring cuisine, award-winning wines, as well as contemporary and casual cuisine to South Florida locals and visitors. Challenging? One might say so. “I opened that hotel,” Nosal brags, but without pretense or superiority. “It was stressful in the extreme,”

he admits, “but it was a good ‘stressful’ and a great deal of fun.” Among his accomplishments at the Hard Rock: “In February 2004, we created the nation’s largest job fair—we hosted 15,000 people in a day-and-a-half,” he notes. A brief stop in 2007 in Human Resources at the Boca Raton Resort and Club was followed in 2008 by his decision to become General Manager at the then recently-opened Island City Health and Fitness (or “Island City Spa” as it was known to members, including Yours Truly). It would be an eventful five years for Nosal. “That was such a fantastic time. We really took that club to where it had never been before as a gym,” Nosal explains. “Part of the reason previous gyms didn’t succeed in that location was that they didn’t understand the area.” Nosal explains that because of Wilton Manors’ relative size (population: just a smidge shy of 12K), he needed to cast his nets wide to attract members and keep the club relevant. “You can only go so far as the ‘gay gym’,” he says, without sarcasm. “That small community is a wonderful anchor, but you need

to expand on that base, which is what we did.” Nosal promoted the gym to demographics beyond Gayborhood residents. “We brought in seniors, added trainers and classes, and built up the club’s presence throughout the larger geographic area.” When Island City owner Reece Darham sold the gym in December 2013, Nosal knew it was time for a change of his own. He agreed to stay with the newly-named Steel Gym for a few months, but was able to “cast off” after a month Under New Ownership. “When I left Steel Gym, I wanted to buy a business that already had an established customer base. I also knew that I wanted to open a restaurant, with a small staff. And so ‘Kingpins’ was born.” Nestled inside Manor Lanes, at the NE 26th Street side of Wilton Manors, Kingpins Pizza & Wings represents the first step in a Master Plan that Nosal hopes to put into action over the next half-decade. “The plan is to open three locations, with the next one a small, stand-alone location,” Nosal confides. Along with pizza and wings, Kingpins serves “classic American food,” explains Nosal. “Burgers, salads, Philly Cheesesteaks—and our Grilled Chicken Wrap is very popular.” Although a lot of Kingpins’ business comes from patrons at Manor Lanes (“A lot of business on league nights.”), more of Nosal’s receipts are coming from carry-out customers. That’s good news for one of the community’s good guys. “Whatever it takes to get the job done,” Nosal adds with conviction and a smile. In his case, serving good food and owning a great attitude are a formula for success.

Why Drop A Ball? BY RICK KARLIN

The Times Square midnight ball drop on New Year’s Eve is so iconic that it is imitated around the world, with local versions dropping everything from a wheel of cheese to Key West’s famous dropping of a drag queen named Sushi in a high heel. But how did the custom originate? Before there were time zones, most American cities kept their own time, based on the sun. However, sailing ships needed to know the exact time in order to navigate knowing their precise longitude. They usually relied on a marine chronometer, which looked like an over-sized pocket watch encased in a devise similar to a gyroscope. The device needed to be recalibrated often, which meant going ashore. In 1818 the Royal Navy began using a visual signal in Portsmouth, England so that the mechanism could be reset. The signal used two balls set on a flagpole at the shore; one fixed in place, the second mobile. Just before noon, the second ball was raised and aligned with the stationary ball. At that point the sea captains, viewing through a telescope, would not be able to see any light between the balls. The second ball was dropped

at precisely noon and sailing ships would set their chronometers against the official time. Other port cities soon adopted the practice. By the late 1800s, technological advancements eliminated the need for recalibration of chronometers. However, the time balls had developed a following. In port cities, many shopkeepers and city businesses set their clocks to the ball drop. Western Union installed a time ball at its New York City headquarters in on Broadway in 1877, a time when the ball was still dropped at noon. Adolph Ochs, the publisher of the New York Times convinced the city to rename the intersection of Broadway, 42nd St. and 7th Ave. Times Square after the newspaper. In 1904, in an attempt to draw people away from the traditional Wall St. New Year’s Eve gathering space, Ochs announced a New Year’s Eve party and promised fireworks at midnight. His scheme worked and within three years, Times Square became the place to gather at midnight. The news coverage became great publicity for his newspaper. In 1907, Ochs couldn’t get a permit for the fireworks. Instead, he installed a seven-hundredpound sphere of iron and wood, covered with 100 light bulbs, and had it lowered from the flagpole at midnight. The tradition has continued since then except for 1942 and ’43 during wartime blackouts. Originally the ball was lowered using a system of ropes and pulleys and timed to a stop watch. In 1995 computers and mechanical devises were instituted. Now it is controlled by a computer system calibrated to the laser-cooled atomic clock in Colorado used as the official time standard for the United States.

When a character says “everything means something” early in Top Five (Paramount), written/directed by/starring Chris Rock, it’s a clue to pay attention. For example, Into The Woods isn’t the only Christmas season movie in which Cinderella, a prince and princess make appearances. After making millions in a series of Hammy The Bear movies, comedian/actor André (comedian/actor Rock) is looking for more meaning in his life and career. Of course, he probably won’t find it in a pending marriage to Bravo reality TV star Erica (Gabrielle Union). But it was Erica who was there for André following his issues with substance abuse and his run-in with the law. He also probably won’t find much meaning (or money) in his first serious acting role in Uprize (sic) as a Haitian revolutionary. He might find it in the following places. During a return visit to the NYC housing project where he grew up, where he runs into his unpleasant father Carl (Ben Vereen), and is feted by his ex-wife (Sherri Shepard) and a circle of friends (including Tracy Morgan and Leslie Jones). A bachelor party, where he gets helpful and hilarious advice from guests/ friends Jerry Seinfeld, Whoopi Goldberg and Adam Sandler. An impromptu comedy club appearance where he rediscovers his groove and keeps the crowd in stitches will also have a favorable impact. It’s in scenes such as these, with their natural and relaxed humor, that Top Five is a top-notch comedy. All of this is revealed as New York Times journalist Chelsea (Rosario Dawson), a writer with a variety of pseudonyms, is interviewing André. Single mom Chelsea has her own issues, including an elusive DJ boyfriend whose sexual proclivities should have been a clue to her as to who and what he really is. Let’s just say you’ll never look at tampons and hot sauce in the same way again. As a director, Rock gets outstanding performances from his cast in both small and large roles. However, Rock might want to update

some of his references, say substituting Ellen DeGeneres (easily the most famous lesbian in the world) for k.d. lang (love her, but she’s not as famous as she used to be) in a tastefully made lesbian joke. For the record, the Top Five of the title refers to lists of favorite things, in this case, hip-hop acts.

Based on a true story, Foxcatcher (Sony Pictures Classics), begins in the late 1980s as Olympic gold medalist Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) earns a meager $20 for a speaking engagement at an elementary school. He brings his medal, which he earned at the XXIII Olympiad in Los Angeles in 1984, to show the students. Back home, where he eats ramen noodles flavored with hot sauce, his existence seems fairly lonely. Close to his older brother, college wrestling coach Dave (Mark Ruffalo), he comes to theguymag

campus to work out with him on a regular basis. Right from the start, the presence of wrestlers gives Foxcatcher a vaguely homoerotic quality. The brutal ballet that occurs on the wrestling mat, when Mark is training with Dave or other wrestlers, or competing, is almost as arousing as it is assaultive. Basically a walking head injury with cauliflower ears, Mark is wooed by wealthy social misfit and patriot John DuPont (Steve Carell in a prosthetic nose. No, really!). He’s flown first class and then delivered by helicopter to DuPont’s estate on the outskirts of Valley Forge. The practice facilities there are the finest money can buy, even if the social interaction is awkward and uncomfortable. John, whose only childhood best friend was purchased for him by his ancient equestrian mother Jean (Vanessa Redgrave), blossoms share with us on guymag.net

in Mark’s presence, and vice versa. Mark gets into top form so that he can earn the medals that mean so much to him and his benefactor. But it doesn’t take long before things get ugly. DuPont drinks too much and is a cokehead. Mark soon follows suit. Before you know it, John tells Mark he’s an “ungrateful ape.” Dave (and his wife and kids) are also lured into DuPont’s warped web, and in case you missed the news story, that also ends badly. Foxcatcher feels less accomplished than Miller’s feature film directorial debut Capote, which was also a mood piece that better maintained the mood. If spending more than two hours with a brooding Channing Tatum in a singlet and a beakier and geekier Steve Carell is your idea of entertainment, then definitely see Foxcatcher. If not, there’s no reason to get caught up in the movie. theguymag

The holiday season is supposed to bring out the best in everyone, but if you are serious about your workouts and proper nutrition, you may feel a little stressed. Temptation lurks on every buffet table, at every party, and at every family gathering. Most often these demons attack in the form of favorites like creamy eggnog and home made Christmas cookies. As social commitments and holiday chores multiply you find it harder and harder to hit the gym. As your frustrations grow, the temptation to give into binge eating grows heavily upon you. The reality is that you don’t have to give in and pack on pounds. You can have some fun and even cheat on your diet as you celebrate the holidays. Here are some tips to help you with your nutrition so that the holidays won’t defeat you.

1) Everything in Moderation – Food is definitely more plentiful during the holidays. But you don’t have to give in to your primordial cravings (at least not where food is concerned). Find a happy balance that suits your dietary needs and body building goals. Have a cookie, but not the whole tray. 2) Eat Before You Go to Dinner – Many people overemphasize the communal activity of eating over enjoying the company of friends. Focus on the social activity when you are at a gathering instead of hovering over the buffet table. Eat a good sized body building meal before you go out so that you aren’t hungry and tempted to pig-out on fattening foods. Wear a hot outfit that shows off that body so that you can enjoy the compliments rather than another tray of cookies. 3) Plan Your Dietary Schedule – Ever hear the old adage, “If you can’t beat them, join them.”? Consider using the season between Thanksgiving and New Years to bulk up. I don’t mean that you should eat indiscrim-

Keeping yourself full of body building foods will help you stay focused when faced with fruitcake and pecan pie 4) Load Up on Vegetables – Many people do not eat enough raw fruit and vegetables to begin with, but almost every holiday buffet table has a tray of these life-savers front and center. Heap your plate with veggies and fruit and you’ll get plenty of good fiber and vitamins. 5) Eat More Frequently – Yes, actually eating several smaller meals more frequently helps you burn more calories in the process. If these meals consist of low fat, high protein foods like chicken, tuna, hard boiled eggs, tofu, yogurt, and whole grains you will feel fuller, more satisfied and less likely to binge on holiday no-no’s like cookies and fudge. 6) Get Involved in Food Preparation – If you are hosting a party make sure that you provide a healthy array of foods that you can enjoy guilt-free. That way you will better resist the cheese balls, fudge, and butter rum cake. If you are going to a party, bring a vegetable tray or a healthy casserole. That way you will know that there will be something healthy for you to eat and your host will think that you are a caring and generous person.
