Pridefest Returns to Holiday Park Heritage South Florida LGBT Event Celebrates 35 Years By RORY BARBAROSSA

his Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, Pride South Florida rolls out the 35th annual “Pridefest: Beyond the Rainbow” at Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Park and War Memorial Auditorium, with events taking place all week at local venues throughout Greater Fort Lauderdale, including Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, and elsewhere, embracing an off-site Official After Party. Pride South Florida, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, is composed entirely of volunteers with a mission to promote positive images of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals. The group also actively furthers the progress of educational, civic and cultural activities in order to enrich the lives of LGBT persons and the larger South Florida community as a whole, working together to achieve common goals. Pridefest is the organization’s signature annual event, with all proceeds generated being donated to other local charities and LGBT community organizations. Organizers are faced with the typical challenges of throwing a large outdoor event, as well as the peculiarities of a recovering economy, and the realities of demographics: in a world where gays are actively courted

to destination places across the globe, and where gay couples bedecked in red can hold hands walking down Main Street, USA, during Orlando’s “Gay Days,” can they keep this heritage festival relevant? “Very much so,” emphasizes co-chair Marc Hansen, who—in one capacity or other—has served on Pride South Florida’s board for years. “The very existence of ‘Gay Days’ and other great organized events can trace their roots to—and thank their lucky stars for— the sort of outdoor festival we are bringing to life. This is especially true at the time in which we are living,” he adds. “Think about it: DADT [the Pentagon’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy], done. Gay marriage: on the books. Marriage equality is on the lips of every Republican candidate. Sadly, most oppose it. But these are the sorts of issues we come together and celebrate at Pridefest,” says Hansen. “I love the very idea of ‘Orlando Gay Days,’ and the fact that kids are taking their same-sex boyfriends and girlfriends to prom in places that wouldn’t have dreamed of it when I was that age,” the Pridefest co-chair and former U.S. service member insists.

“But that sort of gets lost during some other events that celebrate being LGBT. At Pridefest, we open the doors to everyone celebrating the very things that give us ‘Pride,’ and to acknowledge the struggles that lie ahead ahead.” He laughs. “Pluto and Donald won’t help you do that.” Hansen also notes the abundance of space and entertainment they have on the menu. For its 35th anniversary year, Pridefest 2012 will have outdoor and indoor stages, to take advantage of the air-conditioned War Memorial Auditorium, which will likewise host vendors and a display of Florida’s largest HIV/AIDS Memorial Quilt. In addition, the event will feature world-class entertainers, including Logo TV’s Jonathan D. Lovitz, comedian Michelle Balan of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and Logo’s “Out Laugh Festival,” NBC’s “The Voice” finalist Beverly McClellan, Billboard Dance/Club Play recording artist and songwriter Julissa Veloz

(“Tiara Girl” in season eight of “American Idol”), South Florida performer Tony Cruz, comedy-hypnotist Jon Simon (“Simon Sez”), legendary Freestyle artist Ray Guell, and the Pridefest headliner, 18-time Billboard Top Ten recording artist Taylor Dayne, among others. The event will also include a dance tent equipped with an enormous dance floor area, as well as more than 250 vendors, music, food, and activities all day, and lots of opportunity to socialize and connect with friends old and new. Is One Better than the Other?

n America, there are almost as many views on what good health really means as there are diets and workout regimens. One school says that Americans are too sedentary and need movement and exercise. Others suggest that it is the American diet and the way we eat that is at the root of our problem. One thing no one can argue about: Widespread child and adult obesity plagues our country big time, and it’s an issue that needs to be dealt with now. Nutrition is a fundamental necessary of life. We all eat—just not particularly well. Fail to get enough hydration, air, and food, in that order, and you will most assuredly die. While most of us aren’t at that extreme, the majority falls into that giant arena of nutritionally deficient. Millions and millions of Americans, gay and straight, have only a vague perception of healthy eating. Among them are the millions that dutifully go to the gym and workout without ever realizing that their efforts are futile without giving the body the fuel it needs to benefit from exercise. While following a varied diet (as illustrated in the pyramid plate) is always a good idea, eating proper portions of these healthy foods is just as essential. Too much of anything is gluttony, so try keep your portions around the guidelines of a 2000 calorie diet—or slightly less if weight loss is your goal. Eating these foods at the correct time of day is just as critical as the portion size. Eating less food more often provides a continuous source of energy for your body, whether it is exercising or not. Keep in mind, that your body burns calories even in the most sedentary individuals, due to the fact that the human body needs to maintain organ and brain functions to stay alive. Exercise is important and needed in everyone’s life to maintain muscular and skeletal strength. Without it, muscles eventually atrophy. Unfortunately, in today’s world, the most common type of exercise is carrying excess fat as we walk around—and then only just enough to make it from one seat to the next. Appetite alone motivates most of us from one meal to the next. It is imperative that we re-assess that behavior immediately. Do anything less and you absolutely are shaving years, if not decades, off your life. While exercise is vitally important in the mix, it must take second place to nutrition. Without adequate nutrition, you cannot have good health. Without good health, you will not be able to work out effectively, even if common sense tells you you must. Only by putting these two elements together can you ever hope to achieve dramatic results. Proper diet and exercise can do wonders for the mind and the body, as well as lift your spirits. Eating portioned controlled meals (especially as we age) throughout the day, coupled with moderate exercise during the week, is the state-of-the-art way to achieve overall health. No crash diet or pill, or hurried explosive exercise routine will last long. These are shortterm fixes for what should be a long-term goal. Knowing the facts on what it takes to be healthy is the best start to overall success. Please choose wisely and remember to keep all things (nutrition included) in moderation. Fast facts: The correct diet will trim the fat; the correct exercise will tone the muscles. Pair them together and become the best you can be. Forever.

on’t tell the tourists: South Florida locals already know that some nights are busier than others (well, duh!). The same cannot be said of Miami-Dade and Broward’s gay Happy Hours, where friends and familiar faces blend with the out-of-town set to form a perfect blend of postwork and pre-night-out. To accommodate the multiple “crowds” (Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers, as well as Rat Packers and Brat Packers) that descend their watering holes, from South Beach to North Andrews Avenue, local saloonkeepers and restaurateurs have set up a clock-work timetable to keep the most budget-conscious, driest boy or girl well-lubricated (in Happy Hour libations, at any rate). Our tour of Happy Hours starts in Broward’s Gayborhood, Wilton Manors. At Tropics (2000 Wilton Drive), Happy Hour starts at 4 p.m. and runs through 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drinks are two-for-theprice-of-one (hereinafter, 2-4-1), which—in keeping with Gayborhood tradition--involves paying for a round all at once, and getting a chip for your second drink. In this case, that chip can be used at any time, even during the wee small hours when drinks are full pop. Across the way is Sidelines Sports Bar (2031-A Wilton Drive), “where sports come first” and where Happy Hour runs daily—for the first time!—from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. with half-price drinks (the other popular Gayborhood-variation on the split-level-drink-price), followed by a back-half Happy Hour from Midnightto-close, also with (according to their Web site) half-

price libations. (Rumor on the Drive has it that a few kind words about FSU gets you in good with the effervescent publicans.) Just a few doors down is the southwestern-themed Rodeo Restaurant and Bar (2033 Wilton Drive), with a select Happy Hour specials menu: 50% off bottles of wine, Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; halfprice martinis on Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Thursday Ladies Nights, with half-price well drinks, beer, and wine glasses. One of the Drive’s most recent offerings is Pinché Taqueria (2045 Wilton Drive), a NYC-by-way-of-Tijuanatransplant, offering great outdoor atmosphere and a daily 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Happy Hour with $4 well drinks, $5 Pinché margaritas, and $20 margarita pitchers, as well as half-priced appetizers from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fans of the hip ambience and charming environs of the Naked Grape Wine Bar (2163 Wilton Drive,

Wilton Manors) followed owners and partners Caleb ben-Avram and Tim Slivinski when they relocated from just down the Drive, and both new and regular patrons enjoy their daily “Social Hour” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with $5 glasses of house wine, and $5 bar bites. On Thursdays, get social with an expanded 5-toclose Social Hour, including $5 house wine glasses and bar bites, and the wine bar’s for-pets-and-their-humancompanions “Yappy Hour,” hosted by Naked Grape’s Brett and his canine companion, Penny, and featuring a menu of ‘Tapas for Pets,’ courtesy of Lola’s Healthy Pet Café in Wilton Manors. As Caleb and Tim like to remind friends and guests, Naked Grape is “pet-friendly for friendly pets.” Bring yours, and enjoy a round or two together. On the south side of the Gayborhood, where Wilton Drive turns into NE 4th Ave., you will find Fort Lauderdale’s oldest gay bar under the same ownership, Ramrod (1508 NE 4th Ave., Fort Lauderdale), a leather, Levis, and uniform bar with hot men and a 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily 2-4-1 Happy Hour (weekends included!). f you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That is the mantra today for the makers of dozens of classic toys and games, who are jumping onto the digital train with facelifts for some brands that have been around (almost) as long as Joan Rivers (Monopoly: born 1935. Rivers: born 1933). The classic Americana game of Boardwalk and Free Parking by the Parker Brothers has dumped the culturally-iconic “Monopoly money” and traded it in for a tablet or smartphone that counts players’ money and, places its value on a smartcard. In the updated version of America’s first popular parlor game, “The Game of Life,” which first appeared in 1860 (the year Abe Lincoln was elected president), the plastic spinner has been replaced by a tablet, which shows a picture of the spinner and makes the spinner’s sound. “Life” imitates art (literally!). All of these revamped OGs (“Original Gamesters,” yo) are merely a reflection of the universal dependency on devices and gadgets. Recent data from Common Sense Media shows that more than a third of kids 8 years old and YOUNGER use mobile devices including smartphones and iPads. Around 25 percent of tykes aged 5 to 8 multitask with digital devices some or MOST of the time. Let’s remember, too, that a sluggish economy means fewer consumers purchasing toys without some “oompf” to them, and manufacturers are fighting for their products’ survival in a tight and competitive marketplace. Most manufacturers had an anemic 2011. During the year’s fourth quarter, when toymakers make most of their annual sales,

two of the largest—Mattel and Hasbro—reported a drop of 2 percent in domestic sales, which includes Canadian data in the case of Hasbro. Who knows how those numbers impacted Santa & Elves? Is it a coincidence that the hot item for the tots last Christmas was a table computer for kids, the LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer? As they say, monkey see, monkey do (sorry kids), and the little ones are just aping their parents’ behavior (my last simian simile, promise!). Data from manufacturer Mattel suggests that 21st Century playtime involves techenhanced gadgets more often than Katie the Stuffed Kangaroo (duh). Thus Mattel’s Barbie, which made its debut in 1959, now has a camera built into her--somewhere. When a picture is taken using the button on Barbie’s belt to snap, the image appears on the front of Barbie’s T-shirt, and is also downloadable to a computer. Who needs Ken? Toys that your grandfather--or maybe your grand-daddy--would recognize, like the spy glasses favored by adolescent pirates, are getting hightech makeovers worthy of the CIA labs in Langley, Virginia. With technology that records daytime and nightvision video, the Jakks Pacific “Spy Net Multi Vision Goggles” have enough real-tech to perform actual surveillance work (how cool is that?). Remember running around in the neighborhood warehouses playing Laser Tag with your cousins? Hasbro’s 80s classic has been retooled, with toy guns replaced by iPhones, with a visual display via an app that shows a live video overlaid with graphics of the surrounding terrain, and lasers that appear when the trigger is pulled. Mattel is upgrading some Baby Boomer standards, including products from its Fisher-Price and Hot Wheels lines, in addition to the above-mentioned Barbie. “Apptivity” will utilize free apps with which kids can access games on the iPad, moving miniature plastic figures around the tablet with sensors. Kids today. Ya got to love ‘em.

got a call about two weeks ago from my boyfriend, who mentioned “in passing” that he and some friends--whom I refer to affectionately as the “Four Whores-men of the Apocalypse:” clever, no?--were on their way to our place after finishing their rounds (and rounds) on the Drive: Did we have anything quick to eat? And, if not, would I mind (ha-ha) whipping something up for these locusts to eat? I recalled how much I enjoyed being thought of as a miracle worker in the kitchen (and elsewhere in the house), so, while I plotted my revenge against Mr. Wonderful, I threw together some easy and delicious cocktail foods which will please any palate in a pinch--whether or not you’re single (or soon to be). STUFF STUFFED WITH STUFF These appetizers are great because they are yummy, filling, and they contain a lot of ingredients that you probably already have in the kitchen: Bleu Cheese-Stuffed Tomatoes:

Red Caviar-Stuffed Celery: Cut celery stalks to two-inch pieces. Mash up a packet of cream cheese or Neuchâtel cheese and thin it with heavy cream. Beat in red caviar to taste. Add a dash of lemon juice, and stuff the mixture into the celery stalks. Devil-in-Prada Eggs: Hard cook a dozen eggs for about 12 minutes. Let them cool, then shell them and cut them lengthwise. Put the whites aside after you remove the yolks. Mix the yolks with four tablespoons of mayonnaise, one teaspoon of mustard, 1 tablespoons of chopped parsley, and one teaspoon of chopped chives. Add salt if needed. Stuff yellow mixture into whites and garnish them with paprika; and then chill. NUTS ABOUT THE NUTS Okay, you got me: the cashew, while a nut in the culinary sense, is a seed in the botanical sense. These are so good you won’t care whether you’re putting nuts or seeds into your mouth (or even about the heavy-handedness of that pun). What you’ll need: • 1 lb. of unsalted cashews

Mash up ¼ pound of bleu cheese and thin it with 1 cup of sour cream. Add one medium-sized grated onion and one teaspoon of freshly-ground black pepper. Stuff the mixture into cherry tomatoes, or pile it onto scooped tomato wedges.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. On the stovetop, melt the butter then remove from heat. Stir in rosemary, sugar, cayenne, and salt. Toss cashews with the butter herb mix, and spread into a baking pan. Bake for seven minutes. Remove from oven and let the batch cool a little, and serve warm, or cool it thoroughly and store it in an airtight container.

MARINATED KALAMATA OLIVES These delights are both affordable and scrumptious, and the recipe lends itself to being fine-tuned to your taste, so feel free to experiment with herbs, oils, vinegars, and citrus.

• 2 teaspoons of crushed red pepper • ¼ teaspoon of dried thyme • ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil • ¼ cup of red wine vinegar

Drain juice from olives, then place olives into a mixing bowl or large glass jar. Toss remaining ingredients—except for the olives—into a small saucepan, and gently simmer over medium heat. Pour the warmed mixture over the drained olives and marinate for a few hours at room temperature, stirring occasionally. Store the olives in an airtight container and refrigerate. These olives will keep for at least a week, and are a delicious snack for whenever. Now if you could just find a boyfriend who knows how to cook.

Pub Food and Eye Candy

he Manor Complex on Wilton Drive is already world famous for its theme parties, state-ofthe-art sound system, creative lighting, and hunky salacious bartenders. Get set to add to that sizzling scene, courtesy of their new restaurant, Taps & Tapas, which matches the fun, beat-for-beat. Whether sitting outside on the front patio and eating al fresco, or dining inside the club, Taps & Tapas leaves its mark with such casual ease that you just might be tempted to dismiss the food itself. That would be a big mistake. The new menu is divided into large chunks, and sectioned off with your stomach’s capacity in mind—in theory. We say “in theory” because one could suppose that a chunk labeled “Small Plates” would translate into a small portion. Nope. We ordered the Szechwan Calamari ($11.95) with that concept in mind. The kitchen, on the other hand, must had thought we were eating for two when they served up a heaping mound of tender calamari cooked just so, breaded in cornmeal and tempura crumbs, tossed in a Szechwan sauce with enough tang to wake up our epiglottis, and topped with almonds, red peppers, sesame seeds and scallions. The result was enough delicious calamari for each of us, plus several others who came to peer over our shoulders, apparently invited by the tantalizing aroma. From the section labeled “Flatbreads,” we explored the Cajun--the Manor’s version of Sausage and Mozzarella Pizza ($8.95). The unleavened crust is a low-carb delight that platters the toppings with determined tolerance, yet begs to be tasted on its own. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, look no further than “Handhelds,” a chuck of the menu that deserves honorable mention for hearty presentation, given the portion size of its accompanying fries and pickle. At $10.95, we judged the Smoked Turkey with Brie and Apples the clear winner over the Skirt Steak, Barbeque Chicken Chop Wrap or the Grilled Cheese—

all of which can be ordered on Focaccia, Baguette, Tortilla or Challah Bread. Our server Mike, who looks like he knows his way around a food table, recommended the hand-battered Onion Rings and the Thick- Cut Sweet Potato Fries with maple dipping sauce ($4.95). We couldn’t decide, so we ordered them both. Even as Mike helped us finish the plates, it was a tough call which one was better. We left the decision up to him, but he couldn’t tell us ‘cause his mouth was full. If your eyes are as big as your stomach, or visa versa, we recommend moving directly to the menu section labeled “House Plates.” Called by any other name, this is the Big Boy’s division. The go-to selection is Bronze Roasted Salmon ($17.95). Here, a healthy portion of fresh Chilean Sea Bass is cooked to perfection and drizzled with a delicate lemon vinaigrette sauce. Riding shotgun next to the fish: baby-cute oven roasted fingerling potatoes, plus zucchini and squash which were good enough to go it alone. There are salads (starting from $5.95)—we recommend the Barbeque Chicken Chop ($13.95); and ½ burgers (all $11.95)—our nod goes to the Black and Blue, Angus meat topped with lettuce, tomato and onion. Just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite of anything, we spotted the Raspberry Baked Brie ($10.95), a puff pastry treat served with grapes, apple wedges and sliced baguettes. In one word--“yum.” Even as we slid off our stools, stuffed and smiling, we promised to return on Wednesday for “Buy a Margarita, Get a Free Beef Taco Night.” You come too. Bahamas While the Bahamas are our closest island cruise destination, when left in the hands of Source Events, the place becomes a totally different experience altogether. Source is the official producer of the Miami Beach Pride Cruise, departing on April 16 for four-days aboard the Norwegian Sky. You’ll definitely want to check out these cobbled streets and back-rooms before hopping on a bus and making a mad dash over to Nuremberg, Germany (with a pee break in Carlsbad). ooking for exercises you can do at home without having to store and drag out equipment? Need a challenging exercise routine you can do on the road when you travel for work and have no access to a gym? Tired of the same old same old and need a break from clanking machines and noisy gyms? Then calisthenics, also called bodyweight exercises are the way to go! Besides, changing up your routine is essential for making and seeing progress. Calisthenics are exercises consisting of movements that use your body weight as resistance to work against when exercising. Yes, we’re talking here about jumping jacks, crunches and push-ups, etc., that you plodded through in your high school gym class without much thought or enthusiasm. But calisthenics are much more. They are an extremely efficient way to build muscle and stay fit using short bursts of intense training that involve almost all muscle groups. Free weight training is still tops when it comes to building muscle, but calisthenics have advantages, too! They can be done indoors and outdoors. You can do them in the privacy of your home or in a limited office space. They can improve cardiovascular endurance as well as build muscle strength. So get up off your derriere, stretch those shoulders and arms and let’s get this party started with some upper body calisthenics. As always, let’s shoot for three to four sets of 8 to 12 reps of each exercise. Push-ups are the best bodyweight calisthenics for building your entire upper body – chest, back, shoulders and arms. Push-ups can be a mighty challenge if done at various angles and in super-sets with chin-ups. Lay face down on the ground with your legs straight, knees off the floor, and arms supporting your upper body. Now raise yourself off the ground straightening your elbows and arms, but keep elbows

close to the body. Rise until elbows are locked and pause for a moment and squeeze everything at the top of the movement. Now lower your body slowly, feeling the motion all the way down until your chest is very close to the ground. Here’s a real tip, you can vary your arm and hand placement while doing push-ups to target different muscle groups. Place your arms and hands out as wide as you can to blast chest. Bring them in at shoulder width to pump shoulders and biceps. Isolate triceps by bringing hands and arms in close and turn palms inward. Pull-ups build arms and a wide back. All you need is a bar to hang from. Beginners will probably need a chair or a spotter to assist them until strength is built up. Simply grab hold of a bar with arms shoulder width apart. Pull yourself up until the bar touches your chin. Then lower yourself in a controlled motion until arms are fully extended without using gravity too much. Don’t bounce or jerk. In overhand pull-ups the palms should face away from you. In underhand pull-ups your palms should face you. For advanced commando pull-ups, keep one hand on one side of the bar and the other hand on the other side. Here you do pull-ups sideways wherein you pull yourself up so that the bar is hitting your neck and trap muscles nicely. Now you can pump up your upper body at the beach or in the privacy of your own home. Next column: on to lower body calisthenics.
