Special GUY MAGAZINE Women’s History Month Interview

M

elissa Manchester’s connection to the gay community is long and enduring. From her early days as one of “The Harlettes,” Bette Midler’s original backup singers, to her rise through the singer/songwriter ranks during the 1970s and her ascension to full-fledged divahood, Manchester has remained on our gay-dar. “Playlist: The Very Best of Melissa Manchester” (Arista/Legacy), a 14-track compilation that brings us up to date, presents Manchester in the various phases of her career. GUY Magazine’s Gregg Shapiro spoke with Manchester this season about the collection and her contributions to popular music.

GUY Magazine: “Playlist: The Very Best of Melissa Manchester” is your third domestically issued compilation. How do you think it compares to 1983’s “Greatest Hits,” and 1997’s “Essence” discs? Melissa Manchester: I think what’s different is that this is more of a musical journey. I wanted to include never before released duets. I wanted to pay tribute to my first band-mate, Cooker LoPresti, with whom I sang “I Can’t Get Started With You.” Covering a song like that on my second album and “‘70-something,” way before anybody thought that was a cool idea. I also wanted to include two songs that had been used in films within the last two years. “Rain Bird,” which is an original song I wrote for the film “Dirty Girl” with one of its stars, Mary Steenburgen. And the only live recording of “I Know Who I Am” which was used in Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls.” I also wanted to include two songs that I wrote by myself, “Talking To Myself” and “Shine Like You Should.” It’s an overall view of different parts of what I do and how it expresses itself.

play with others. What do you think it is that makes you a good collaborator? MM: I’m really interested in how people think. So to be in a room with somebody who is intriguing and inspiring to me, and also what was unusual about the songs that I wrote with Carole is that the songs all came out of conversations. Therefore the tone of the songs was very conversational. The listener always feels like they are in the moment when that first line is uttered. I think that was sort of unique about those songs and that’s part of Carole’s remarkable talent, that she can pull that out. But those songs were directly inspired out of conversations that we were having. What happens to me is if I’m having a conversation with somebody who’s interesting, I’ll start to hear music and then we’re off and running.

GM: I’m glad you mentioned “70-something.” You were an early signing to Clive Davis’s Arista Records, along with Barry Manilow. Do you have any memories of that time? MM: Clive actually inherited Barry and me from Bell Records, which was originally a singles label. In those days, they used to have singles labels and album labels. I was assigned to Bell Records as an album artist on a singles label, so what they did was sort of left me alone, which was really radical. When Clive absorbed Bell into Arista, it was not business as usual. There was a huge engine behind you. He had very big plans. When it worked it was fabulous, when it didn’t work it was disconcerting. Because you are up against Clive and his opinion of what you should be doing. Sometimes we butted heads, sometimes we had great success together. GM: “Come In From the Rain,” from the “Playlist” and other discs, is one of your most covered songs. Are there versions, other than your own, for which you have a special fondness? MM: Barbara Cook’s version is exquisite. Since she is my musical hero, I was honored to have her record that. The thing is that as a songwriter you yearn to have people record your songs. In the day and age of everybody writing their own stuff [laughs], I was thrilled with anybody’s recording of “Come In From the Rain.” GM: “Come In From the Rain,” a song that you co-wrote with Carole Bayer Sager, is an example of how well you

GM: You mentioned movie music, through which you have also made a name for yourself, beginning with “Through The Eyes of Love” from “Ice Castles,” and continuing with “I Know Who I Am” from “For Colored Girls,” and “Rainbird” from “Dirty Girl.” What do you like about having a song associated with a movie? MM: My present obsession is musical theater. So any time somebody asks me to write a song that captures a moment in a larger story, I’m your girl [laughs]. In terms of “I Know Who I Am,” the fact that Tyler Perry felt that that song somehow represented his story, sort of revalidated my feeling about writing for musical theater. I just have that ability to write large and specific at the same time. GM: You also mentioned “Rainbird,” which was co-written with actress Mary Steenburgen. How did that come about? MM: That whole adventure was remarkable. I was sent the script to “Dirty Girl” by its writer-director Abe Sylvia. The film takes place in Oklahoma in 1987. It’s a wonderful coming-ofage film that’s now on DVD. Abe wove nine of my songs into the film and created the soundtrack which is sort of like a Greek chorus for Clarke (Jeremy Dozier) and his friend Danielle’s (Juno Temple) journey. In the middle of the film there was a montage where Danielle is running away and she’s not sure to what. It’s a fantasy of what she thinks it’s going to be, but really she’s not sure. Abe needed an original song and Mary and I asked him if he would let us write the song. Abe was kind enough to send me that piece of film and I just watched it over and over again. The music started to sing itself and I sent the completed melody to Mary and she wrote spectacular lyrics to the song. GM: You were one of the divas that gay teen Clarke idolized in “Dirty Girl.” What does your long history as a very public member of the LGBT community mean to you? MM: It’s something I don’t take lightly. I really feel honored, because the gay community has always supported [laughs] divas worth supporting. To say ‘some of my best friends are…’ [Laughs], don’t take that as trivializing anything. I was raised guymag.net

GM: You mentioned your love of theater and in recent years you have expanded your palette to include musical theater. What do you enjoy about performing in that medium? MM: It’s painting on a much larger canvas. When your songs are in the world of purpose--which is that each song is specifically constructed to help move a larger story forward--that’s a fantastic muscle to use creatively. Because your assignment is so specific, if you miss the mark, you change the balance of the way you’re telling the story. When you look at the masterpiece musicals--”Sweeney Todd,” “My Fair Lady,” “The King and I,” “Carousel”--the precision and the concision of the scores is not an accident. Everything is precisely placed and creates these magnificent motifs for each character. around gay people, so it’s not anything other than part of my everyday life. My father was a bassoonist at the Metropolitan Opera and my mother was one of the first women designers on Seventh Avenue. The gay community has been part of my home. When I actually committed myself to an artistic life, which is also second nature to me, it was part of the journey. The gay community were the ones I presumed would support me [laughs]. Because they were everybody I knew. If they were considered ‘others,’ then I would be considered an ‘other’ as well, I presumed, because that was just my normal. I guess it’s a circuitous way of answering your question, but it’s just the way I was raised. While historically the gay community has supported divas, I’m honored that in the world of disposable amusement that they have stood by me. I really appreciate that.

GM: Do you have an all-time favorite musical? MM: I think “Sweeney Todd” is the masterpiece of my age. GM: Have you met Stephen Sondheim? MM: I actually was in “Sweeney Todd.” I played ‘Beggar Woman’ in the 25th anniversary [production] at the Ahmanson Theatre [in Los Angeles]. Mr. Sondheim came backstage and congratulated the cast, congratulated me, and I looked at him and I said, “now this is serious fun” [laughs]. He gave me a sly wink and nodded his head as if I got it. It was magnificent. He came to see a musical I wrote called “I Sent a Letter to My Love,” that played off-Broadway, and wrote me a very lovely note. He’s the master and when I was teaching a ‘Writing for Musical Theater’ course at USC last year, I walked around and used his “finishing the hat” book as my bible. GM: Do you have plans for a memoir? MM: People have asked me to write a memoir. I think I have a book in me, but it’s too early for me to write a memoir because I feel like I’m living my second act. I’m eager to see how it turns out. GM: On your Web site last month, you wrote that you are redirecting the royalties from your song “The Power of Ribbons” from the scandal-wracked Susan G. Komen Foundation to Planned Parenthood. MM: Here’s the thing: as a songwriter you never know where a song will find its home. When I was first starting to write, Carole Sager and I found our songs underscoring the women’s movement. They would use our songs on Ms. Magazine specials. When I wrote “The Power of Ribbons,” it was inspired by my friend Nancy Colton, who was fighting a valiant fight. I just think Planned Parenthood has a more comprehensive, holistic approach to women’s health issues. I think it is really cruel to withhold breast exams, mammograms, and education from poor and underprivileged women. It was just my choice and I felt I needed to write a little something about it. I was delighted and surprised that it was published.

36

|

guy magazine

GM: I think many people will thank you for that. MM: It’s my pleasure. I sang a couple of Christmas concerts with the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles this past December--you can go online and find the video that they made of me singing the song “A Mother and Father’s Prayer” to support the “It Gets Better” campaign. These things need to be acknowledged and addressed. What I know for sure as I get deeper into my life and my career is that the currency of a song, while mostly it is disposable, on occasion can move a nation, change a mind, keep somebody from committing suicide, can give people a tool to hold onto to pass through a storm. I know that because that’s what people have written to me. I don’t take any of it for granted. I’m very grateful for the gift of being able to write songs and to share them. Having All Your Apps in One Basket (get your mind out of the gutter)

T

he trouble with having a slew of iOS apps becomes apparent when you realize that you personally lack the organizational skills to centralize everything that you have running on your smartphones, laptops, tablets, and desktops. If this sounds like a champagne problem, consider this: as of this month, Apple’s App Store slings over 550,000 iOS applications. Said apps have been collectively downloaded over 25 billion times. If you’ve made newer app purchases, Apple’s free iCloud on iOS 5 can assimilate them onto all your devices, but older purchases require some more finesse if they are spread across different electronics. For those like me who have an embarrassment of app riches on specific devices but not all of them, there are a few easy steps to making amalgamation magic: Make sure your systems are updated. Having both the Lion operating system (Mac OS 10.7) and the latest version of iTunes will ensure that all of your machines are authorized to share. For laptop and desktop PC users, click “Store” on the iTunes top tool bar, then click “Authorize this Computer” in the drop-down menu. iCloud storage on all of your machines needs to be turned on. Click “Purchased” in the iTunes left sidebar, then click “Download Previous Purchases” in the lower right hand corner. Where it reads “Music,” “TV Shows,” “Apps,” and “Books” across the top of the next screen, click on any to determine which ones you’ve purchased, and download the ones you haven’t onto that device. Although it took me the better part of several hours, I now have close to 400 apps on my laptop and desktop, making it a snap to synchronize iPad or iPhone without worrying about losing apps. Genius, no? KARAOKE FOR YOUR SMARTPHONE If you’ve spent any time at some of the kicking karaoke spots around the Gayborhood and beyond, you’ve probably thought to yourself “I could do this all time!” Thanks to smartphone apps, you can “share” your singing talents 24/7. Keeping your relationships intact will be an entirely different matter. The cool thing about today’s smartphone software is that there is a program to fulfill nearly all of

38

|

guy magazine

your Euterpean needs, with apps that generate instrumental tracks, provide background singers, offer vocal training, and studio quality recording (see: “sharing your singing talents,” above). There are programs for both Apple and Android, but as if often the case in music-related apps, users of the former have more selection. Apple-exclusive products include GarageBand ($5), VoiceJam ($7 or a limited “Lite” version for $1), VocaLive ($20, with a limited free version), Glee Karaoke (free), and Sing Sports (free). As I said, there is dearth of music apps for Android, but they do have some cool ones, including Vocal Ease ($2 for Android or Apple), Voice Tutor ($3 for Android, $5 for Apple), and Prima Vista Sight Singing. Each of these apps has different strengths and weaknesses in terms of what they offer. Most include at least a limited selection of free song selections, but the majority require the user to earn tokens toward their purchase or the outlay of a buck or two for each one. Others let you sing-along to songs from your iTunes account. Some connect their users to YouTube for lyrics and songs, which can prove problematic during buffering-related interruptions. There are also song-related graphics on certain programs. Others offer competitive elements so that you and your singing (or drinking) friends can take turns competing to be the next Poor Man’s American Idol. The better apps also offer coaching tips on how to keep the proper time with the song, features that “correct” your tone, pitch, and even singing (okay, one miracle at a time). Some of the apps for both Android and Apple enable you to share your musical genius with the world, connecting and collaborating with other app-wielding artists. Still others offer studio-quality recording features and effects, something for the serious music professional or wannabe to consider, appealing to both hobbyists and serious singers. Now if they would just design one that would discourage that fifth apple-tini before your next effort at Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

The

Big Boy

Slumber Party I

t’s true: you’re never too old to have a happy childhood. And what could be more fun as the last vestiges of cool weather make way for the balmy ocean-borne breezes of spring than a slumber party for you and your big boy friends? The idea itself is so charming that as I write this, my bf is chomping at the bit making up a guest list (believe me: this will be edited several times--see below). While lots of adult activities can pass for a “slumber party” (some of them originating online), what I’m suggesting here is a more “PG-rated” (okay, PG-13) event for you and some friends to break out the fuzzy slippers and pajamas (or better still, buy some new ones: one-zees are always optional!), some really great, really bad movies, a few cool old school games, music from back-when, and some comfort food—and memories--to put Marcel Proust and his cookies to shame. 1. PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS Since this is a play date, you need to invite friends who will play well together (remember, this is not an Adam4Adam encounter, not that there’s anything wrong with those…). Think about your circle of friends, and who would have the most fun letting out the kid inside them. Decide first how many people you want to invite. This should be based on how much room you have, both in terms of “common area,” where you will be playing games, watching movies, etc., and where the actual sleepover will take place. 2. FOOD, FOLKS, AND FUN Have a good idea what your friends’ tastes are for music, movies, comfort food, and the

like. Depending on the age group involved, this would be a great time to break out some fun novelty songs from days gone by: “Rock Lobster,” “Take This Job and Shove It,” “(Oh) Mickey (You’re So Fine),” and anything from the “Sesame Street” or— heaven forbid!—“Barney” songbooks will strike a familiar chord in even the most jaded Gayborhood Boy. Backgammon, Yahtzee, Operation, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Jenga, Perfection, and Taboo are fun board games that invoke childhood and should be placed around your main common area so that your guests can get their game on. Jigsaw puzzles also are a lot of fun, and don’t forget to make time for Truth or Dare, and to invite guests into the bathroom for a mirror-gazing session of Bloody Mary—spooky! Movies are a matter of taste, but for a grown up sleepover, kitsch should trump quality. Think in terms of “Godzilla,” “Legally Blonde,” “Sweeny Todd,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Grease” (but not the sequel!), and anything with Madonna. My bf and I have a collectors’ edition DVD with all the old School House Rock television episodes and songs, including ones that even the younger set will probably recognize (“I’m Just a Bill,” “Interjections!,” “Conjunction Junction”). Most of these can be found on YouTube or elsewhere online. Add some vignettes from “Family Guy,” “The Simpsons,” and “Futurama” and you’re setting a cool, “After School Special” vibe for your guests.

An option for the gore-minded gay is the scary/thriller/horror genre, including such schlocky and fun gems as “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” anything from the “Halloween,” “Friday the Thirteenth,” or “Saw” series, or one of the great George Romero zombie classics. And it almost goes without saying that John Waters’ pioneering cult films starring the Drag Queen of the [Last] Century, Divine (“Polyester,” “Hairspray,” and for the strong-stomached, “Pink Flamingos”), will bring the house down. 3. EATS, DRINKS, AND BE-MERRIES Since this is a Big Boy Slumber Party, remember that at least some of your guests will want to get their drink on. It’s obviously up to you how much you want your slumber guests to be “in the spirits,” but I would suggest that you will probably have more fun if your guests aren’t dropping off to sleep one at a time because they got too “gassed” during the first hour. Find out what your guests like, including non-alcoholic libations. I recently tried vodka that tastes exactly like Froot Loops® cereal when mixed with Sprite and pineapple juice. Blanket a serving tray with 2 oz. paper cups and pour this delicious libation in each one, then top the mixture with actual Froot Loops. Talk about the Breakfast of (Adult) Champions! I also love “cake”-flavored vodka, which mixes great with all kinds of juices and carbonated beverages, and invokes that childhood vibe we are shooting for. Shirley Temples (or Roy Rogers if you are inviting gay women) are easy and also reminiscent of when we were kids and couldn’t wait to be old enough to order the real stuff (if only we knew then what we know now). Comfort food should be the rule here, so if You & Co. aren’t concerned about your waistlines, now would be a good time to satisfy that Pop Tarts jones you’ve been experiencing. Fondue is another fun “activity food” which will keep your guests occupied while they cook. I also have a recipe for the most fun and sinfully rich dish you can serve your sleepover pals: Heavenly Hash Cake (see below, and yes, it does taste as good as the name implies). 4. TO SLEEP, PERCHANCE TO DREAM Be sure you have enough places for everybody to sleep. Sleeping bags, makeshift blanket-and-pillow forts, and the old reliable sofa make comfy spots to park it once things wind down for the night. Two people will be comfortable on a sofa bed, a spare mattress tarted-up with sheets and blankets can accommodate a couple more, and of course the host gets his own bed in which to sleep.

COLOR BOX Try this recipe on for size to give your guests something to enjoy while you screen “Dawn of the Dead” or “The Devil Wore Prada” (it will also give them something to work off at the gym the next day):

Heavenly Hash Cake

• 2 small or 1 large package of semi-sweet chocolate chips • 4 eggs, separated • ½ teaspoon of salt • 1 teaspoon of vanilla • 2 teaspoons of sugar • 1 pint of whipping cream • 1 cup chopped nuts; any kind will work, but walnuts are especially good • 1 store-bought angel food cake Beat the whipping cream and then put it aside. Break up the angel food cake into bite-sized pieces and likewise put it aside. On low heat, melt the chocolate chips. Beat the egg yolks and add them to the melted chocolate, then stir. Beat the egg whites until stiff, adding sugar. Add the egg whites into the chocolate and egg mixture, and fold them in. Stir in nuts, vanilla, and salt. Lastly, fold in the whipped cream. Using a casserole dish, layer the pieces of angel food cake with the chocolate mixture. Refrigerate.

“Tacos Auténticos” at the New

¡Pinché Taqueria!

T

here’s something new happening on Wilton Drive in Wilton Manors. Already, we can hear you saying “Yea, yea, yea…isn’t there always?” And, of course, you’re right. In this case, however, we’re talking great food and plenty of it at the new Mexican joint Pinché Taqueria— which in Spanish means something like “kitchen boy’s taco bar.” The name came from the original Pinché, which was on a dusty side street in Tijuana, Mexico, where workers could pick up inexpensive tacos, burritos and quesadillas. When owner Jeff Chartier packed the kitchen supplies, the groceries, and the Mexicans in the trunk of a bus and brought them across the border and up to his first two Taqueria’s in Manhattan, his goal was to make his taco bars the most authentic in town. Sweet Stephanie Lee continues the theme running the newest outlet of the Mexican chain, adding her own touch of Florida heat in the process. The meats are butchered on the premises, the organic groceries still shipped in from South of the Border, the mesquite grill flame roasts meats, corns and peppers to perfection in an atmosphere that can best be described as “hold on to your stool seat; there’s a new game in town.” As you might expect from a taqueria, there’s an array of tacos on the menu, including a seasoned chicken Taco de Pollo Asada ($2.95); a battered fried or grilled mahi-mahi Taco de Pescado ($3.95), served with shredded cabbage and a delicious cilantro dressing; spit-grilled pork Taco al Pastor ($2.95), or the even more tender braised grilled pork Taco de Carnitas ($2.95); and the traditional stand-by Taco de Carne

Asada ($2.95), made with grilled steak. The most popular items on the menu, as confirmed by our oh-so-personable waiter Johnny (we compared abs; mine won), were Carnitas Michoacanas ($12.95) and Arrachera Steak ($13.95). The carnitas platter was a healthy serving of tender pork arranged art-house perfect on several tortillas with rice and beans, topped with a mystery broth that was aromatic enough to bring neighborhood cats purring, and a delicious piece of corn-on-the-cob, labeled Elote on the side. It’s grilled on the fire and seasoned with salt, crumbly cotija anejo cheese, butter and mayo (so good that it’s sold by itself at $3.50). The steak is a masterwork of thinly sliced skirt steak that’s been marinated within an inch of its life in tequila and garlic. The moist and flavorful end result is far too delicious to be thought of as pure Mexican, but you’ll clean your plate and that of your neighbors. Our favorite ensalada on the menu is a burst of freshness called Tortilla Lime Salad ($11.95) which normally comes on soft tortillas but we special ordered the dish in a crispy tortilla bowl. Overflowing with shrimp, beans, tomatoes, fresh sliced peppers, corn, onions, the entire entrée is topped with tortilla strips, making it more an event than a mere dish. Though you can check it out now, the Grand Opening of Pinché Taqueria is on Wednesday, March 28 at which point the restaurant is certain to have its few rough edges smoothed to a spit-shine. The margaritas are too weak and too expensive in a town where the $3.00 margarita is standard. They have no chunky pico de gallo salsa for the delicious freshly made chips, preferring to use a flavorful but thin variation. And they have no option of crispy shell tacos—only soft tortillas, which may be authentic Mexican, but, hello, this is Florida. But these are small issues compared with the main theme—filler-up food with fun, fun servers. The manager’s name is Josh. Tell him Guy Magazine sent you!

Sun Your Buns

The World’s Best Gay Nude Beaches

S

outh Florida has some of the best weather in the world. The tropical breezes, cloudless skies, and an ocean temperature that can easily top 80 degrees in the summer. It’s little wonder then that this paradise has one of the most popular clothing optional beaches in the world—topping our list of best gay nude beaches around the world. As I write this piece, I’m sitting on this delicious stretch of oceanfront, officially called the Haulover Beach Park, Florida, USA, located south of Fort Lauderdale and north of Miami. This is not only one of the largest nude beaches in the world, it is the earliest to reach. No rocks to scale, no fences to climb. With a wide expanse of white sand with changing rooms, food stands, and a lifeguard station, you’ll want to park at the north end of the beach parking lot (“$6.00), and walk through the tunnel clearly marked “Beyond This Point You May Encounter Nude Bathers” and enjoy. (www. miamidade.gov/parks/parks/haulover_park.asp) Hippy Hollow, Texas, USA, is located along the rocky shoreline of manmade Lake Travis just west of Austin. Just a fifteen-minute walk from the parking lot, Hippy Hollow Park charges $12.00 admission, but is well worth the price if tipsy Texas cowboys in need of sunscreen application is your thing. Make yourself useful. (www.co.travis.tx.us) It’s not easy to reach Sandy Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, but if you’re willing to drive 20 minutes from Capetown to Llandudno and then hike a half-hour from the parking lot, you will be rewarded with white sandy beaches, a bevy of friendly South African men, and the coldest water into which we’ve ever plunged. Gives a new meaning to “shrinkage.” (http://capetown.dj/ beaches/SandyBay/SandyBay.htm)

Canada is always high on the “cool” meter and adds it own take on the gay nude scene with Wreck Beach, Vanouver, Canada. Perched on the very tip of Point Gray, Wreck Beach is close to the University of British Columbia, so expect the college crowd in record numbers. Parts of the show are the many vendors who sell an assortment of wares including beverages, lotions, candy, and assorted narcotics. Whatever you need, Wreck Beach provides. (http://www. wreckbeach.org)

Our personal favorite of all the nude gay beaches in the world is located on Maui in Makena. Little Beach, Hawaii, USA, has all the charm of a secluded paradise with a paved parking lot to make for easy access. There is a lava outcrop to climb from the far side of the public Big Beach. Once accomplished, you’re exposed to a nudist paradise with a pristine turquoise bay and white sand. The further you walk, the gayer it gets. And make certain not to miss a side trip into the surrounding scrubland. Hanky panky is your reward. Fitness

By TOM BONANTI

L

ast week I wrote about calisthenics – a tried and true, surefire way to a simple, quick muscle pump. Calisthenics or body weight exercises consist of movements that use the weight of your body as resistance to work against. Using short bursts of intense training and just a few exercises, you can get an efficient muscle-building workout for just about all your muscle groups. In short, you can burn fat and calories and build muscle at the same time without leaving your home or office. Just as push-ups and pull-ups can jack up your upper body muscle groups, so too, there are lower body calisthenics that can give you quads of steel and a butt to die for! Here are a few of my favorites. There is no better weight training exercise for lower body than squats. Free squats are calisthenics done like barbell squats but without weights. The basic stance is feet-shoulder-width-apart. A wider stance works the butt and inside of the thighs to a greater degree, and a narrower stance works on the outside of the thigh to a greater degree. Point your toes out laterally and do not let your knees extend over your middle toes when you squat. Now bend your knees and lower yourself with your back straight and head up until your thighs are parallel to the ground. Raise yourself up using only the power of your lower body to a position with legs nearly locked out. Perform as many of these as you like, no limit, as long as you keep good form. Jump squats are great if you want to add a little extra punch to regular free squats. Perform these in the same manner as free squats except after you squat down, perform a jump forward as you come up. Land safely, squat again and jump backward as you come up. These are sure to make you break a sweat, even though you

might feel a little silly doing them at first. Just do them; they work! For an extra kick, try interspersing a set of 12 to 15 jumping jacks between each set of jump squats. Lunges are the best way to tighten and tone your butt muscles. If you want to pack on a little muscle to a flat or sagging booty and get a little cardio workout in at the same time, try walking lunges. Find a flat driveway or parking lot, or a large somewhat empty room. Begin with feet together stance. Keeping your back straight take a deep exaggerated step forward bending your knees and getting them as close to the floor as possible. Push yourself back to the starting position and repeat with the other foot an exaggerated step forward. Do these walking lunges using perfect form, as many as you like and I will personally guarantee that you’ll have a booty like a 23 year old porn star! OK, maybe an exaggeration, but your posterior will surely get harder and take on that nice bubble shape in no time. Remember, push-ups, pull-ups, jumping jacks, squats and lunges are exercises that you can do at home, in your workplace, or in a hotel room with no equipment. You can do them indoors or outdoors and in no time at all your muscles will feel pumped and ready for whatever activity or mischief comes your way. Enjoy!
