D

RAGONETTE has been one of my favorite bands for quite some time now, and they’re finally ready to show the rest of the world what they are made of! The band consists of Canadian singer-songwriter Martina Sorbara, bassist and producer Dan Kurtz, and drummer Joel Stouffer. Back in 2007, they released their debut studio album, “GALORE.” The album was filled with infectious ELECTRO-POP, and was a superb effort for a debut release. Their sophomore album, “FIXIN TO THRILL,” took the band on a more rock n’ roll route, but still stayed true to its original sound. Since then, Dragonette has collaborated with SUPERSTAR DJs like KASKADE and MARTIN SOLVEIG, which probably spawned their most popular song to date, the fun and light-hearted club anthem “HELLO!” Now, Dragonette is serving up another hit, with their newest single, “LET IT GO.” The track serves as the first single from their upcoming album, and showcases Dragonette doing what they do best. Pick up your copy of “Let It Go” today! Continued on Page 28

Casey 3pm

C

ASEY 3PM CLARK is the lead vocalist for the critically-acclaimed electronic pop band, WIDEBAND NETWORK. Casey is also an accomplished film composer (“Neverland,” “White Red Panic,” “Voltron: The End”) as well as vocalist, with over seventeen collaborations, including remixes for the always-reinventing BT! I recently discovered Casey on the Web, and IMMEDIATELY became obsessed with his talent, his voice, and his music! “I can write a song like Ke$ha/I can make beats like Will.I.Am,” sings Clark in the opening of “Money On The Floor.” The song is glitchy, robotic, and over-produced, but in the best way possible, with hints of dubstep throughout. The entire EP, titled “ENTROPY,” is fantastic! From the discoinfused “Black Magic,” to the CRAZY electro-dance track, “The Future,” there is a song for everyone. What is also very interesting, Casey allows you, the consumer, to NAME YOUR PRICE! You can purchase his 5-track EP online now, and actually decide how much you want to pay for it! Check it out today, and help contribute to a great new artist.

inco de Mayo—which in Spanish means the “fifth of May”—is a commemoration held each year on—wait for it!—May 5 to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride (not the gay kind, but then again). In history, the date observes the unlikely but decisive victory of a ragtag group of Latinos over a superior and better armed French force (sounds like World Cup Soccer all over again), during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Although it has been observed in some form or other since the past 150 years (making this year its Sesquicentennial celebration) the holiday crossed over into the U.S. during the rise of Southern California’s Chicano movement—and, of course, once the beer companies got hold of it in the 1980s. This year, Cinco de Mayo (and May 5, as well— DUH!) falls on a Saturday. If you want to host a Cinco de Mayo event that involves more than breaking open a few bags of Doritos and a 24-pack of Corona Extra, the—like an oversized sombrero–try on some of these muy memorable ideas: The color scheme should reflect saturated colors: a deep green or red tablecloth for the dining table and set out green, white, and red napkins which reflect los colores on the Mexican flag. Mexican handicrafts, like Talavera-style bowls and platters and bowls, will give an authentic feel and flavor to your fiesta. Other accoutrements can include paper and corn husk flowers, which are also traditional Mexican crafts. Mi Encanta La Música! As at all occasions, the background music should never compete with

30

the conversation between you and your guests. Traditional instrumental tracks will evoke the atmosphere of a cantina or restaurante without overpowering the party. In a jam, you can always turn to the Al Son de la Marimba collection, or music by Jose Alfredo Jimenez. If you want to explore traditional music from Puebla, find a Latin music store in your area and ask for suggestions. Viva La Sangría! Sangría is a traditional wine punch that’s native to the Iberian Peninsula, and is especially popular during the summertime in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Chile, and the Dominican Republic. There are dozens of variations on this delicious and refreshing beverage, which means “bloodletting” or “bleeding”—as in the Old School use for leeches—in Spanish. It almost always contains wine, fruit, a sweetener, and brandy. Fruits are chopped or sliced and can include apples, berries, cherries, grapes, lemon, lime, mango, melon, oranges, peaches, and pineapple. The sweetener can be orange juice, honey, sugar, or simple syrup. As a substitute for brandy, club soda, Sprite, 7 Up, or another lemon-lime flavored soft drink can be used.

Ingredients: 2 oranges, thinly sliced 1 lemon, thinly sliced 1 lime, thinly sliced 4 cups of fresh firm fruits, prepared and sliced 1 gallon of full-bodied dry red wine, like Continued on Page 32

Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon 1½ to 2 cups of Triple Sec, Cointreau, or other orange liqueur 1½ cups of brandy 2 bunches of lemon verbena, washed and stemmed (approximately 2 cups) Fresh soft fruits, prepared and sliced Club soda, champagne, or sparkling wine

C

ombine the citrus slices and other firm fruits in a large container. Add wine, liqueur, brandy, and lemon verbena, then cover and refrigerate overnight. When you are ready to serve, put some of the soft fruits into each wine glass, and then fill two-thirds full with the Sangría. Top them off with a splash of club soda or sparkling wine. If serving from a pitcher, use frozen fruit to keep the Sangría cool instead of ice cubes, which will dilute the flavor. Should you have leftover Sangría, remove the fruit from its container so that it won’t spoil: you can just add fresh fruit the next time. As always, a good host anticipates the needs of all of his guests, so offer a non-alcoholic version of Sangría that is made from wine grapes, carbonated water, essence of lemon, and cane sugar. For the beer drinkers among your amigos, you will want to serve Mexican beers: yes, yes, we all know about Corona, but for real variety, try some other brands that give different twists to cerveza. Tecate, Dos Equis, Pacifico, and Modelo Especial all fit this bill. Fiesta, Baby! Cinco de Mayo means letting your inner Mexican chef go wild. There are dozens of ways to serve, but I suggest a do-it-yourself-style buffet table, with meat dishes served (and kept warm) in pots, and guacamole, sour cream, salsa, and other condiments served in small dishes or bowls. Make sure the salsas and guacamole are

room temperature before serving them. To ensure that your tortillas are warm and tasty, heat each one in a pan at high heat for about a minute, making sure to turn them often, then place them in a towel-lined covered bowl or basket while you warm up the rest. This recipe is for carnitas—literally “little meats”—a type of braised or roasted pork that is both delicious and common in Mexican cuisine. Although traditionally pork (Sp: Puerco) is browned on a stovetop, making it in the oven takes out a lot of the hardest work.

Ingredients: 4 pounds of fatty pork shoulder, cut into 2-inch pieces 3 cups of water 1 medium white onion, thinly sliced ½ orange, cut into 2 pieces ¼ cup pork lard or vegetable oil 8 garlic cloves, peeled 3 bay leaves 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk 2 teaspoons of dried oregano 2 teaspoons of fine salt Place all of the ingredients into a wide 6-quart heavy pot, bringing the water to a boil. Lower heat and simmer thoroughly. Stir occasionally until the pork breaks apart with a fork and the liquid is completely evaporated (about 1½ to 2 hours). Discard orange pieces and bay leaves. If after two hours the liquid hasn’t completely evaporated, remove the pork pieces and let the liquid continue to bubble off until it has, stirring often. Preheat oven to 450°F. Transfer pork and fat to an oven-safe dish, and brown the pork in the oven— uncovered—for 20 to 30 minutes. You will also need 24 to 32 corn tortillas, 2 cups of salsa, and enough chopped white onion, chopped cilantro, and lime wedges for taste. The tacos should be served with different flavored salsas (we’ll cover those for Mexican Independence Day—Grito de Dolores—in September), and piled onto the tortillas with chopped onions and cilantro. This recipe will yield enough for 8 main course servings, or 24 to 32 tacos. For a batch half this size, use a slightly smaller pot and cut the measurements of pork, salt, and oregano in half, but use the same amount for the remaining ingredients and water.

Guy Travel By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

BERLIN The City Without Walls Part One—In and Around

B

erlin is a city best approached with a very open mind. Forget any image you might still possess of a graffiti-covered Berlin wall being toppled, or guarded gates separating East and West. While Berlin of the present is one very much rooted in its past, there is a sense of celebration in the air here that carries with it the scent of liberation. Getting There There’s good news and there’s good news about flying to Berlin. The city is not only easy to reach by non-stop flights on Air Berlin from Miami, it happens to be more affordable than any other European city to book. Round trip airfares can be purchased for just over $900 any time of the year directly through Air Berlin’s website (www.airberlin.com). Until a few years ago, there used to be three airports in Berlin—Tegal located five miles northwest of the city; Tempelhof to the south; and Schönefeld, outside the city in Brandenburg, bordered by the famous gate. Tempelhof was closed to the pubic in 2008, and the first week in June 3, 2012, Tegal and BRANDENBERG GATE

34

Schonefeld will close as well. On the same day, a new airport called Berlin Brandenburg will open in their place using the airport code BER. Like all things German, it will be executed with precision, having been in the planning stages for years. The rail system has already been rerouted to include a stop directly underneath the new main terminal, with trains to the center of Berlin taking just under a half hour, and departing every 15 minutes. It’s about the same amount of time to make the journey by cab, but far less expensive. So if you don’t mind a little hassle with carting your bags, use the train and save the dough for some Wiener schnitzel. The Neighborhoods To get your bearings in this metropolis of some 300,000 gays, think of the city as a big round pie. In the center is the neighborhood known as Mitte, German for “middle” and the hub for tourist traffic. It’s the place to find what little remains of old Russian rule, including Alexanderplatz,--the center of the old Communist Berlin—as well as Checkpoint Charlie—the crossing point at the Berlin wall, and now a museum that’s you’ll definitely want to make a point to visit. On the West side of Mitte is the Tiergarten district, famous for the botanical gardens whose groomed lawns are the perfect place to find nude sunbathers—all perfectly legal in this city of abundant decadence. On the East side of Mitte is Friedrichshain. This is a transition area that was once the center of East Berlin’s concrete slab dwellings and warehouses. Consider this neighborhood as Berlin’s version of New York’s Lower East Side and Soho combined. Continued on Page 36

or those who like it on the rough side and want to see skinheads and white supremacists in the wild, continue east at your own risk. Prenzlauer Berg is to the northeast of Mitte, an historic neighborhood of lovely old townhomes and trendy street cafes and coffeeshops that will appeal to the more traditional artistic types and classy gays of a certain vintage. There’s yuppy wealth all around the place in Prenzl’berg, so prepare to spend some cash while there. Aim for the south of Mitte and find Kreuzberg, home to the area’s largest lesbian population and a growing commune of anarchic punks. Even under the former Communist rule, it was always a place where the cool congregated. That much hasn’t changed; just gotten a bit more gentrified. Head further south still and reach Neukölln— Kreuzberg on steroids. Artists find the inexpensive housing a draw, and there are lots of local galleries to prove the point. And then there is Schöneberg. We’ve saved the best for last for a good reason. To think Gay Berlin is to think Schöneberg. It was in front of Schöneberg’s town hall that John F. Kennedy made his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech, and meant it. You too will feel at home. This is a neighborhood with more rainbow flags than cafés, and first-time visitors may never venture outside its confines, so plentiful is the assortment of goodies provided within. But that would be a shame. Berlin is a city that needs to be explored for all its flavors. It’s a huge, sprawling wonderment of variety and inbred tolerance. So inbred, in fact, that it was over ninety years ago that the first gay club was opened here. It was in Schöneberg that Christopher Isherwood wrote his “Berlin Stories” that became the hit musical “Cabaret.” And you, too, will be singing “Willkommen” before you can stop yourself. 36 | guy magazine

Grub and Such While most Germans speak fluent English, the majority of German restaurants will print their menus in their native tongue. This is particularly true in the smaller kaffees, which you should not hesitate to frequent. These small restaurants are not only some of the best places to meet the locals, they are also the source of some fantastic regional cuisine. There are over 1,500 types of sausages in Germany, with some 300 of them made in Berlin alone. Look for the word wurst if sausage is your thing. Bratwurst is usually made from pork; blutwurst is as well, though it’s been darkened with blood; and darker still is schwarzwurst, which often is made using the blood from geese. Fortunately, it tastes better than it sounds. If you’re in the mood for fish, look for local trout or salmon listed as forelle and lachse. Spargel is the local name for white asparagus; spätzle is a large, flat noodle; knödel is a delicious potato dumpling; Kartoffelpüree are mashed potatoes; and pizza is, well, pizza. Some things are just too good to change. German breads are as fantastic as they are plentiful. Look for roggenbrot if you like rye; mehrkornbrot if multi-grain is your taste; and kürbiskernbrot if the concept of pumpkin seeds inside dark rye sounds interesting. Since Berliners and the tourists that love them play night and day, fast food is available 24/7. While you’ll notice the familiar signs for McDonald’s and Burger King, the real favorite here is doner kebabs, the German version of gyros served on pita bread with a yoghurt sauce. All the better to eat and run. Next week, Part Two—the Clubs, the Hotels, the Adventure. It’s worth the wait, liebling.

Guy Dining By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

FUEGO LATINO Good Eats—Cuban Style

T

here was a time, not too long ago, when the only way to get great Cuban food in Fort Lauderdale was to leave the city and drive down to Calle Ocho in Miami. That was BFL, of course. Before Fuego Latino, that is. The Cuban restaurant opened in a strip mall that’s also home to the Zoo Gym and a martial arts school, and became such an immediate hit that the owners had to start posting a sentry seated on a lawn chair out in the lot to make certain their hungry customers had a place to park. While Fuego Latino serves some Mexican dishes, it’s the Cuban fare and reasonable prices that will keep you coming back for more. To get an instant sense of the place, order a Bandeja Fuego ($16.99), and prepare for a feast. The plattersized portion is enough to feed two or three, piled high with Mariquitas, Tamal con Lechón, Chiccharrones de Pollo, Jamon and Pollo Croquettas, Yuca Frittas, and two Empanadas. For the uninitiated, that’s plantains with garlic sauce, pork tamales, fried chunks of chicken breast, ham and chicken croquettes, yucca fries, and stuffed turnovers. In any language, spell that “yummy.” Often, a Cuban restaurant is judged by its Palomilla Steak, and Fuego Latino has a superb version with thin-sliced, spice-marinated and mouth-watering beef. At $9.99, it’s not only a bargain, it’s a sautéd-oniontopped masterpiece of flavor. It is served with white rice, black beans and sweet plantains. It’s a bounty that will not only fill you up, it’s delicious enough to have you licking your plate. Juliana de Cerdo ($13.99) is a specialty of the kitchen—a julienned filet of pork tenderloin that’s been marinated in a blend of spices that’s so secret, the recipe is locked in a safe. Grilled with bell peppers and onions, this dish alone will make Cuban cuisine your new favorite. Traditional paella is a Spanish specialty that’s reinvented at Fuego Latino into a Cuban delicacy that takes some pre-planning. Since this dish-for-two takes

38

|

a full sixty minutes to prepare, call ahead and order Paella Valenciana ($35.99) by phone before your arrival. The Cuban interpretation of this rice dish mixes chicken, shrimp, clams, mussels and grouper. While the flavor is anything but traditional, the dish is a lavish treat you can give yourself and your sweetie. The most popular dishes at Fuego Latino are their assortment of Fajitas--Vegetable ($8.99), Chicken ($10.99), Steak ($11.99), Chicken and Steak combo ($12.99), Shrimp ($13.99), and the Fuego Fajita (Chicken, Steak and Shrimp) ($16.99). The table presentation of these sizzling platters is a sense sensation—steam, aroma, and crackling hot. It’s garnished with tomato, sour cream, pico de gallo and guacamole, plus a stack of warm tortillas. Fast, fresh, and fragrant. A unique feature here is the Fuego Latino Cantina. For $30 per week, businesses and individuals can select one meal a day, Monday through Friday, from a rotating set of seven entrées per day plus up to three side dishes from a ten-side dish selection. Among the choices are Pork Chops, Ground Beef Casserole, ½ Chicken, Palomilla Steak, Ropa Vieja, Beef Stew, Chicken Breast, Breaded Chicken Filet, Pork Chunks, or Grouper Fillet--all served with rice, beans, yucca, sweet plantains, chicken soup, chicharos, ajiaco, lentejas, and/or mixed vegetables. For six dollars a day, can you afford not to eat at Fuego Latino? It’s a relaxed, clean and fun atmosphere here, where you’ll feel like family even if you’ve never been to Habana or habla español. Come early and tell them Guy Magazine sent you.

L

ong a fixture on Wilton Drive, Shawn & Nick’s Courtyard Café has been known for years as a great place for breakfast and lunch, or a late-night, postweekend-bar-crawl snack. The story goes well beyond that. When was the last time—especially in South Florida—that you heard of a business deal being made over a handshake? When owners Nick Berry and Shawn Bombard first discussed the idea of purchasing the venerable restaurant from former owners Norman and Judy, Bombard recalls “I wanted to buy a cleaning business and a laundromat, but Nick had other ideas. Bombard, who had a professional restaurant background, had been looking for a change. “It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy the food business, but I thought perhaps it was time for a change,” he remarked over iced tea. “Now 10 years later, here I am still at it. Funny, some things as we go through life just don’t change.” For years, Bombard had been the self-described “caustic and loud” waiter whom everyone requested to be sat in his station, just for a chance to be insulted and yelled at. It was just a tradition that longtime patrons had come to expect and, frankly, for this writer, Sunday just wasn’t the same without biscuits and gravy—and Shawn asking “Is that enough for you fatty?”—always with a laugh. (Those days of biscuits and gravy are long gone: now it’s black coffee and fruit salad.)

42

|

guy magazine

The Comfort Food Kings Berry and Bombard also participate in the community that patronizes them. Full disclosure: when I worked for a local non-profit, Shawn called and offered a special dinner menu with 10% of the sales donated to the organization. The business pair has also supported numerous other local organizations, and they do so during their busiest nights. For Bombard and Berry, giving back is serious business. Bombard says that he would like to see more boutiques and similar businesses make their way to Wilton Drive. “I miss the retail stores,” he offers. “It seems that the Drive has been just focusing on bars and restaurants. I really preferred when we had a good mix of retail and food and bars.” As for other changes on the Drive: “Honestly, the meters have hurt all of the businesses. I know the city needs revenue, but it has hurt.” The growth of business at Courtyard Café’s flagship location (they have a satellite at The Depot bar in Fort Lauderdale and also own and operate Gelato Station, just down the Drive) from 60 meals (“covers” in the business) a day when Berry and Bombard purchased the restaurant to 120 covers today, and from 150 sold on Saturday and Sunday to 300, is a Drive success story worth reflecting upon in leaner times. “Here is the bottom line,” says Bombard. “Good food, good prices, get ‘em in, get ‘em out, but never let them feel neglected. It’s all about customer service.”

CELEBRITY CELEBRITYSCENE SCENE

K

yle Poffenbarger is the kind of up-and-coming artist that you hope the pop stars of today were like as they were on their individual way up. Polite, unassuming, and if not exactly shy—he is too much the conversationalist once his interest and passion is engaged—he possesses a refreshing lack of self-possession that often characterizes young gay “Millennials.” And did I mention his passion for music? “As soon as I write something down, I feel a sense of fulfillment,” relates Poffenbarger, who was born in the west Broward exurb of Plantation in 1988 and has an energy that may not be apparent at first glance. That’s largely because of the intensity with which he focuses it. K-Poff (his performing and writing name) graduated a year early from high school, a consequence of taking on an honors course workload that would have stunned an elephant. His love for music, video, and all things digital was apparent early. “When I was 13, I started making and editing movies using music tracks and Beanie Babies dolls as actor/models,” Poffenbarger, 24, recalls. “I knew from the moment I had my first camera that I wanted to be in entertainment.” Earning his degree from Central Florida’s Full Sail University at the astounding (and tender) age of 18, his off-the-cuff post-grad “seeking employment” posting and résumé on Craigslist led to a job offer from producers at MTV to work on the network’s reality series “The Paper,” which was coincidentally being set at K-Poff’s alma mater, Cypress Bay High School in Weston. The eight-episode series didn’t get renewed by network execs, but it did result in a more permanent position as a digital producer, responsible for the production and development of a range of technical projects, including Web and television video and commercial material, iPad and smartphone apps, producing movie trailers, Web and graphic design, and a universe of multimedia-focused work. It was natural that his talents and innate affinity for all-things-media would take him into music recording, this time for his own projects. “I always loved to sing,” K-Poff admits. “When I was in school, it was Backstreet Boys and N’Sync. I love to sing and write songs, and produce the entire process.” He first started recording his own material in March 2010, and after the release of the first track (“Turn Me On,” which is available as a free online download at his Web site), the owners of the former nightclub Living Room asked him to perform live. “They heard the track and I remember feeling very nervous but also knew that this was the next step in my professional growth,” he says. His commitment paid off, as the event drew more than 500 people. More music followed, with his tracks heard across the globe on YouTube, and now available for purchase on iTunes,

50

|

guy magazine

including his self-written “Hi-Tech” (his personal favorite), “Tonight,” and the sad and feeling-sounding “I Need You.” Last spring, photographer Mike Ruiz held a competition with the winner enjoying a professional photo shoot compliments of the internationally-famous photo artist, which Poffenbarger handily won. Music, though, remains his passion. His most recent effort, “Devil in Disguise,” has K-Poff’s fingerprints all over it: he wrote, edited, and choreographed the entire song and video, which was released for Halloween 2011. The performer would like to record at least two new songs—acapella—within the year, but doesn’t want to rush his creative mojo. “I want to take my time and do everything right,” he offers. In the meantime, his music is being heard, both by fans and by music industry insiders. Producer “Ghetto Rocker” has remixed “Devil in Disguise,” and called K-Poff’s music “dope” (for those over the age of 35, this is a good thing). “I love creating music,” the artist says. “Creating it, writing it. I don’t dream about being the next Lady Gaga,” he insists. “I get the fulfillment from the creative process. Honestly,” he adds, with a smile and almost a hint of apology, “I feel naked if I don’t have something new to create.” He shouldn’t be concerned: this talented artist has plenty of material to work. Fans new and longtime can follow him at KPoff.com.

Guy Bytes By DUNCAN ST. THIBAULT

Concert from the “Other Side:” Is Tupac’s ‘Virtual’ appearance at Coachella the start of Something Big (and Creepy)?

T

he “appearance” this month of the late Tupac Shakur at the Coachella music festival had jaws dropping and tongues wagging. The rapper’s violent 1996 death apparently has done nothing to dampen his onstage presence, both as he “referenced” current events (including the presidency of Barack Obama, who wasn’t even elected to the U.S. Senate until eight years after Tupac’s Las Vegas murder) and during his “rap” with Snoop Dogg. On Sunday, April 15 the late rap star—who has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide since

2007, making him one of the bestselling artists of all time—took the stage at the annual music and art festival held in Indio, Calif., courtesy of technology that looked like a hologram, but was based upon far older principles of stage magic. After “greeting” the crowd of roughly 100,000 (“What up, Coachella?”) and “reciting” a laundry list of topical subjects (“Give it up for Obama!” “We are certainly in the year 2012.” “‘Hunger

Games’ is number one at the box office.”), “Tupac” joined (living) rapper Snoop Dogg for a performance including the songs “Come With Me” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.” As I mentioned, the image of Shakur onstage wasn’t a hologram, but a 2-D image based upon an old 19th Century magic trick in which the magician would hide below stage while his assistants angled mirrors to project a “ghostly” image onstage. The Wall Street Journal reports that Digital Domain Media Group Inc.—the visual effects house which created the virtual images of Brad Pitt for the 2008 film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” which won the Oscar for visual effects—utilized angled glass onstage that reflected an image projected onto a screen that was unseen by the crowd. Tupac’s “performance” was replicated by making an animation that used the late rapper’s body movements as a template for the “hologram.” Using holograms and animation in live performances isn’t new: at the 2006 Grammys, Madonna performed onstage with the “virtual band” Gorillaz; in Japan, musical groups often employ holograms to bring anime characters to life, like the popular “female” singing app Hatsune Miko; and AKB48—according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world’s largest pop group— employs a virtual pop star: a computer-generated composite image of the band’s members. Here’s the creepy part: Under the headline, “Rapper’s De-Light,” the Wall Street Journal reported last week that “Tupac” may be about to go on “tour.” “Representatives for [rappers] Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg plan to discuss logistics for a tour involving the two performers and the virtual Tupac, according to a person familiar with the discussions.” What’s Continued on Page 54

next? Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reuniting with a virtual John Lennon and George Harrison for a Beatles “reunion?” Say it isn’t so: “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” not your hi-def projector. Look, Mom: No Hands! This might surprise some of you who are longtime Android or iPhone users: your smartphone includes a feature for hands-free dictation, which is actually faster and more accurate than typing by hand (you can stop laughing now). There’s no question that speech-to-text, or voice recognition technology, has gotten a bad reputation for accuracy on digital devices. Both the Google Android and the iPhone 4S allow for the use of a microphone icon on your virtual keyboard which can be utilized for dictating accurate texts, emails, Facebook posts, Tweets, as well as other content. The mic icon has existed for a few years on Android phones, and was added last fall to the Apple iPhone 4S and last month to the new iPad. I should be clear that I am not talking here about Siri, the new iPhone’s voice-activated feature that gives you information like stock prices and the current temperature, or the Android’s “voice actions” which perform tasks like Web searches. Both platforms contain the onscreen mic key, a much less complex feature that can make a world of difference if you spend your days hunched over a keyboard (like me, for example—although

54

|

guy magazine

I would never dream of using a smartphone for a composition of any serious length). oth the mic keys on the iPhone and Android are accurate for short dictation, which makes the feature ideal for Facebook junkies who simply MUST inform their legions of admirers in real time just how delightful is the cranberry tartare served at Le Café White Swallow. Even in a noisy—and cruisey!—environment like the produce department at Five Points Publix, the dictation was accurate. Also with both platforms, much like an uberfastidious English teacher, if you say words like “comma,” the punctuation mark will appear— although both prod you to find out if you want to say the actual word “period” instead of using the punctuation mark. Although there are slight differences in the way the mic icons on both smartphones work, they are more similar than not. Instead of utilizing the keyboard display when it appears, you just hit mic key and start talking instead. The phone sends your verbal verbiage to a server that translates your words into text and displays them on your screen. If you need to make corrections, you type them in manually, but both phones ease this process by pointing out the typos and making suggestions for correcting them. There are other differences, including the number of languages for iPhone’s dictation system, which at present only supports English, French, and German. Apple says they will add Spanish, Italian, Chinese, and Korean in the next few months, but at the moment Android has the iPhone beat in this respect, as its dictation system supports 40 languages, including Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, and Chinese. Much like power door locks on a car, this isn’t exactly a feature that would make me seek out a particular model of phone for purchase, but in a world where we no longer so much speak with each other (conversation) as report on what we are up to (Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare), this is a modern convenience you might not even be aware that you already possess. Just saying.

Love Jones By JUSTIN JONES

T

here he is, standing at the bar, looking at you with gorgeous, promising eyes. You like him. His lips are full, his features masculine. He looks like he’s a passionate lover, like he’ll throw you around a little, degrade you in a way that turns you on. He’ll call you a name or two, and tell you what to do, but then he’ll kiss you. He’ll cuddle with you and make you feel safe. This will be a good night. You exchange glances for what seems like too long. You want to lure him to you, so you first try acting bashful. He makes eye contact with you and you smile, look down at your drink, and bite your lip. He returns the smile and nods his head to the rhythm of the music playing, but he doesn’t approach you.

Then you try a more manipulative approach, paying him little attention. You dance a little and laugh and wave at people. He’ll perceive you as popular and desired. You tell him through this ritual “I can have anyone I want, and everyone wants me.” This will get him to come over and say hello to you. Nothing. Frustrated but determined, you become a little more aggressive. You look at him while you dance, maybe as if you’ve just noticed him and are telling him he’s your pick for the night. Your dance becomes more and more suggestive. Still, he stands at his place at the bar, smiling and nodding approvingly.

What the f**k? These are brand new jeans. “I know my ass looks good in them,” you tell yourself. “Why isn’t he coming to me?” At this point, it’s a matter of principle. You’re NOT going up to him. HE should come up to YOU. He’d be lucky to have you. And what’s he doing? He’s standing there and nodding. Which is kind of creepy now that you think about it. You suck your teeth and bitterly sip your drink. Screw this. No. You know what? He’s probably shy. You shouldn’t be angry. Maybe you should go say hello to him. Maybe he’s that awkward kind of cute. The thought makes you feel better. You take a deep breath, another sip of your drink, and you start approaching him. He starts moving, too: toward you. At last! He’s going to tell you how gorgeous you are and what an honor it would be if he gets to take you home tonight. So you stop halfway to him. Butterflies fill your stomach (which you suck in extra hard to give yourself the illusion of a bigger chest and smaller waist), and there he is. Right beside you. And... He’s passing you. He walks past you and to the spot you were standing, which happens to be in front of a cute young couple dancing far more suggestively than you were. They’re practically humping each other. You stand in shock and embarrassment, immovable. He wanted THEM: The. Whole. F**king. Time. You consider dropping your drink for dramatic effect, but you take a sip of it instead. (Instinct, my love. Instinct.) “You know what,” you tell yourself, “I didn’t like him to begin with.” Sip.
