10 Ways to POLISH Your Personal Style— On the Cheap!
N
o matter what your personal or professional situation— newly engaged or married, recent college grad, newly employed or between jobs, or just keeping a tight hand on to your money (the way a Scotsman holds onto his— bagpipes)—there are meaningful, and inexpensive, ways to add sizzle to your style. You don’t have to be a fashion plate to make a fashionable statement about who you are, and what you are getting across with how you look and dress. Try these ideas—each of them under $20—on for size.
1. LIGHTEN YOUR LID Getting your hair cut makes you look five years younger, and 10 pounds lighter. 2. WASH YOUR FACE At the risk of sounding like your Mom—on Father’s Day, no less—the importance of personal grooming cannot be overstated. Using a facial scrub at least twice a week will help keep your skin youthful and fresh-looking. 3. SCISSORS, SISTER No. Untrimmed. Nose. Or. Ear. Hair. Ever. 4. THE SHINING Now I sound like your Dad: Shine your shoes. Do it yourself for free. 5. “T” FOR TWO Although you may not have worn an undershirt since you were in short pants, now is the time to start again. It is easier on your dress shirts (“Look, ma—no sweat stains!”), and adds a touch of professional class to your style. Get a two-pack for less than twenty bucks.

6. MAN, YOU STINK This is a no-brainer. Regardless of how much or how little we sweat, men—from the burliest bear, to the most delicate twink—give off a “healthy” musk, and it needs to be combated with a deodorant that contains an ANTI-PERSPIRANT. At the old Stanley’s in Fort Lauderdale, the late Carlos nicknamed a dancer “Campbell’s Soup,” and it wasn’t because he knew his way around a ladle—his body stank! Deodorize, or risk never having sex again. 7. SOCK IT UP Throw out your socks that no longer have strong elastic, and make sure the ones you wear are always pulled up all the way—you’re a big boy now. 8. LOSE YOUR WALLET The fat wallet in your back pocket does nothing for either your fashion mark or your spinal alignment (and besides, you don’t need to carry around ten Post-It notes with random guys’ digits on them, anyway). Get rid of the thick wallet in favor of a slim-line option, or, better yet, a money clip. 9. WHITEN THOSE PEARLIES Yucky teeth are a deal-killer—or should be—both personally and professionally. A dental teethcleaning, followed by regular use of whitening toothpaste, and liberal application of breath freshener—now, even I want to plant a wet one on you. 10. SHADES OF CLASS Sunglasses add mystique to your manliness. (This is the secret of professional poker players: nobody knows what you’re really thinking if they can’t see your eyes.) Just don’t EVER wear them at night, or at the club.

Colognes that Every GUY Must Have
T
o paraphrase Don Corleone in “The Godfather,” “a man who doesn’t wear cologne can never truly be a real man.” I don’t care how naturally-pleasant your body odor, every man should compliment his Godgiven fragrance with something that comes from a bottle. The odoriferous compounds that comprise men’s perfume—a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives, and solvents—give the human body a more pleasant scent than the one we give off, say, first thing in the morning, or after a strenuous workout. Texts from antiquity and evidence unearthed at archaeological digs show that perfumes have existed since the earliest human civilizations. (For a literary example of the benefits of cleverly using perfumes, read the world’s first novel, the 11th Century Japanese classic, “The Tale of Genji.”) For men’s fragrances, the year 2012 is one of intricate combinations and unusual pairings— for instance, basil and mint mixed with wood scents, and the distinct aromachemical fragrance of musk. The right cologne adds sophistication and style to your personal grooming strategy. Continued on Page 34

T
hink: Casual, Sport So maybe you
don’t wear cologne to go workout—but you should. Victorinox Swiss Army Unlimited, the manufacturer of apparel, pocket knives, and watches, brings you a fragrance that isn’t the usual lifestyle company fare. This is exactly how Swiss Army Knife cologne should smell, with the essence of Alpine fir trees evoking perfect wood notes, and absinthe and genepi liquor combine to pour masculinity over the whole affair.
A
t Work There was a time when Grey
Flannel was an acceptable choice before leaving for a hard day at the office—but that time was literally during the last century. For the decade of the TwentyTens, you want to distinguish yourself, and make every moment in your company—and AT your company—pleasing for all the senses. F by Ferragamo tickles the olfactories, with the right suggestion of pepper and lavender, and a hint of Tonka bean that’s reminiscent of vanilla, almonds, cinnamon, and cloves. They combine to form the perfect—gay— marriage of sprezzatura and insouciance. Being in a literary profession, I like a scent that evokes machismo—along with bookcases, single-malt Scotch, and the double-vented suits of old Fleet Street in Britain. Jack Black’s “JB” is fresh and crisp, like a Londonderry air (which smells much more pleasing than a London derriere). If you are employed in a professional office setting, give this one a splash.

N
ight Moves Ask yourself why you go
out for a night of cocktails (and then take a moment to consider the word itself). You want to smell like THE MAN if you want to BE The Man. Gucci Guilty Intense is everything the name says. Fragrances of lavender and lemon combine, and then retreat before the INTENSE, but complimentary, mélange of cedar, coriander, neroli, and patchouli. The bottle itself embodies Guilty— and raw—sexuality, like a pair of hyper-carnal gender symbols. If you are the right man, this scent will set your night into motion. Combining notes of musk, sandalwood, and vanilla bean that provide foundation for breezes of citrus, jasmine, and patchouli, and a crescendo of bergamot and cypress leaves, Bond No. 9 New York Andy Warhol is as multifaceted and many-layered as its namesake: mercurial, complex, and irresistible.
M
r. & Mr. Danny and Donnie Jones Request the Pleasure…
There was a time when a man wore a tuxedo just to have dinner on Saturday night. Those days may be over, but there are still events that call for you to wear your suited— or tux’ed—best, and on those occasions, use a scent that combines delicvious and distinctive bergamot with cedar and woodsy floral fragrances that manage to support a manly vibe. Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot will do for you what Pippa’s dress did for her ass, but without the need to deal with all those bigeared, buck-teethed in-laws afterwards.

the SCENE
By GRANT JAMES
Metric:
“Synthetica”
C
anadian new wave/rock band Metric has been on the scene for quite some time, but they kept relatively quiet until they reached commercial success from their 2009 “Fantasies,” from which a track—“Gold Guns Girls”—was used in the Woody Harrelson film “Zombieland,” as well as on an episode of HBO’s “The Entourage.” The track “Black Sheep”—which was originally intended to appear on “Fantasies”—was later given to the soundtrack for the 2010 feature “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” The album was unlike any of their previous offerings, seemingly designed to be radio-friendly. However, it was released by the band themselves, with no financial assistance provided by a label. The album was a success, and helped Metric climb the charts on iTunes and various other sites, expanding their fan base infinitely. After extensive world tours, the band announced in 2011 that they were working on their fifth studio album, to be released in 2012. “Synthetica” is in some ways a return to form for the band, and a total departure from anything they’ve ever done. Opening track “Artificial Nocturne” starts with, “I’m just as fucked up as they say/I can’t fake the daytime/Found an entrance to escape into the dark/Got false lights for the sun/ It’s an artificial nocturne/It’s an outsider’s escape for a broken heart.” Front woman Emily Haines says the album is “about being able to identify the original in a long line of

reproductions. It’s about what is real, versus what is artificial.” The cut “Lost Kitten” features the most “poppy” sound on the album, but stays true Metric classic to (similar to their earlier single, “Grow Up And Blow Away,” off the aforementioned “Fantasies” album). track, title On “Synthetica,” Haines boasts “Hey—I’m not synthetica, I’ll keep the life that I’ve got/So hard, hard to resist synthetica/No drug is stronger than me, synthetic.” While the message of the album sometimes comes off a little pretentious, it’s a good message nonetheless: Keep your wits about you, and pay close attention to what is real. On the album’s closing track, Haines reminds the listener, “I’ve got nothing but time, so the future is mine.” Metric manages to leave you feeling empowered, which is a very real gift, indeed.

“Looking 4 Myself”
U
sher says his album, newest “Looking 4 Myself,” was “damn-near a rebirth.” It’s easy to see he wanted to really show with this album who he is as an artist. The first single, the Diplo-produced track “Climax,” is ultimately one the best songs of his career. Usher sings “Going nowhere fast/we’ve reached the climax/ We’re together, now we’re undone/Won’t commit so we choose to run away/Do we separate? Don’t wanna give in so we both gave up/Can’t take it back, it’s too late we’ve reached the climax.” Continued on Page 38

W
hile Usher has others to help him in the writing process, you can’t help but feel that this album is something personal. He says, “I’ve felt restricted a lot over the last several years, and maybe it’s because I was holding myself back.” “I Care for U” plays with minimal dubstep, but is a noble attempt at getting a girl to realize that he really does care for her, even if it’s through repetitive lyrics like “I care for you…gotta believe that I care for you…oh girl I care for you.” The album is wellproduced, and it offers something for everyone, with classic Usher R&B moments. Although Usher described the album best when he called it “damn-near a rebirth,” “near” is not exactly a full-on rebirth.

making a SCENE Are Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Chris Martin, and Gwyneth Paltrow Trailer Trash?
R
apper Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé, have made plans to rent an RV and take a Sunshine State road trip with pals Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, and their respective offspring (the kids, not the band). The performing power couples say they’ll have boots on the Florida ground once Jay-Z and Martin—the front man for Coldplay—conclude what are reported to be grueling world tours. Of the friendship between her husband and the 35-year-old British singer-songwriter, Beyoncé recently told a reporter, “They balance each other out. Chris and I are like Jay and Beyoncé—two paranoid ironists and two calm, grounded people.” ay-Z last month echoed President Obama’s support for gay marriage during an interview with CNN. “What people do in their own homes is their business, and you can choose to love whoever you love,” the entertainment

mogul said, adding “It’s no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination, plain and simple.” ay told Rolling Stone last month that he hopes to score the Commander-in-Chief—who is known to perform a mean imitation of soul legend Al Green— to play his Budweiser Made in America music festival in Philadelphia on Labor Day. Noted Jay-Z, realistically, “He’ll be so far into helping the world that he probably won’t have time, but I’m absolutely going to ask him.” The rapper is one of numerous entertainment industry A-Listers who have come OUT in favor of marriage equality—prompted in part by President Obama’s endorsement last month. Guy Dining By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
FIORE OF TEDESCO’S
Old Italian from the Family’s Kitchen
T
ony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco. We know this is absolutely the truth because we’ve heard him sing about it 1001 times. And every single time, he convinces us again that his heart is still back there, high up on hill, with SF calling his name. It was only last week that we discovered otherwise. Bennett, born Anthony Dominick Benedetto, may have left his heart in San Francisco, but its alive and well and beating on East Commercial Blvd. these days in a restaurant called Fiore of Tedesco’s. Bennett’s music is heard nightly along with that of Dino, Frank, and Bobby, in this reinvented Italian restaurant, long a legend In Fort Lauderdale. Originally created by Albert and Julie Tedesco, the restaurant was purchased by Fiore and Rose Ann Casale a little less than a year ago. Fiore’s family has been in the restaurant business for over 50 years, so he’s been nursed and weaned on bread sticks and Parmesan. This is a good thing. You’ll find him in the kitchen most nights making new traditions out of old favorites. New to the antipasti menu: Bruchetta Caprese ($18). It’s Italian bread, layered with mozzarella, tomatoes, roast red peppers and red onions, drizzled with basil oil and balsamic in a portion large enough feed a table for four. We always judge a Italian restaurant by its lasagna, and at Fiore and Rose Ann’s place, their Lasagna al Forno ($12) is a pleasure dome of wide pasta noodles, with seasoned beef, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, and a delectable housemade tomato sauce which is a joy to savor. Magnifico! The Eggplant Parmigiana ($14) is a scene-stealer. A lighted breaded and fried eggplant that is tenderly topped with fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, this dish has only one problem. Everyone at your table will expect a bite, leaving not nearly enough for the more gluttonous among us.

guy magazine
The Pollo Sinatra ($16) is a selection worth tasting for its combination of chicken cutlet, prosciutto, spinach, roasted red peppers, topped with a marinara sauce and, yes, more mozzarella. Gorgonzola has always been our favorite Italian cheese—particularly when its prepared as Pollo Al Gorgonzola ($16), a breast topped with scallions, mushrooms, spinach and a gargonzola glaze. Fiore of Tedesco’s likes to pride itself on being a seafood restaurant tucked within an Italian eatery. It expresses that best on the menu with a delicious recipe for salmon called Salmone Tedesco ($22). Okay, perhaps not the most original of labels, but yum-yum is all we can say with our mouth full of a bite of salmon graced with artichoke hearts, onions, and garlic, Kalamata olives and fresh tomatoes. This one is the item that will keep you coming back for more. Think of the Frutti de Mare ($24) as a combo plate with calamari, clams, shrimp and mussels, served over linguine with a light marechiare sauce, made from pink clam juice. The atmosphere of Fiore of Tedesco’s is definitely Old Worlde, accent on old. There is a slightly tattered look about the place that suggests a thousand dishes served on thick white plates and stainless steel silverware whose second home is a dishwasher. But this is not a bad thing. It falls into the comfort category like your favorite BarcaLounger whose arms are fraying. It may not be the newest piece of furniture in your living room, but it’s the one everyone heads toward. If you’re lucky, you’ll find Tony, Frank, Dino, and Bobby there. Tell them Guy Magazine sent you.

Guy Bytes By DUNCAN ST. THIBAULT
For Father’s Day, Parental Peace of Mind: FBI Child ID, and Footprints
I
’m not a parent (although Proculus and I have a few imaginary kids that we like discuss from time to time in order to weird out our friends, but, you know, in a way that amuses us). But I do remember the ghost-white color of my mother’s skin, acquired from fright, on those occasions after I had innocently wandered out of sight while I was a child. Two apps, FBI Child ID and Footprints, can help minimize some of the parental stresses associated with the not uncommon trauma associated with “misplacing” one’s kinder. FBI Child ID stores a photo of your child, as well as detailed information—age, distinguishing marks, etc.—and physical descriptions that will help others locate him or her. The photo can be taken with the app, or selected from your phone’s library. In the search of the unthinkable, the app is user-friendly, enabling you to click on the child’s profile, and e-mail it to those who may have seen him, or who can aid in the. The app also includes a button that enables you to call 911 as well as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, along with suggestions to keep kids safe from strangers, and information on what to do if a child goes missing. To safeguard your personal data should the phone get lost or stolen, you can password-protect the profiles. Footprints—which is essentially a locationsharing app that contains added features to help track your child’s movements—is most beneficial for parents who have given iPhones to their kids. Of particular note to anxious parents is the app’s notification feature, which lets moms and dads establish “geo-fences”—for instance, around a child’s regular haunts between school and home,

|

or around the mall—and should the child cross that digital line, the app alerts parents via text message. Parents can also specify how often they want their child’s location to be checked. Parental units should take notice that if the phone is turned off, the tracking function will stop, and a child on-a-mission could conceivably throw a wrench into things by deleting the app before taking a prohibited trip someplace. (Jealous partners are also potential customers for the app.) TRACK THIS: FBI Child ID, FREE for iPhone, iPad, etc. Footprints, FREE on Apple for a month, $2 for three months, $4 annually.
Nevermore Lose Important Reminders with “Evernote”
I
forever need to remind Proculus about the importance of writing things down, so that he doesn’t forget important reminders—like picking up a half-gallon of Caramel Caribou ice cream and a box of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies on his way home from the Shatner Photon 3000 tanning bed. I also often need to remind myself of cool writing ideas that come to me during my Tylenol PM-induced dreams. I get it: we live in a paperless world, and that’s what makes Evernote so valuable. The app makes remembering or taking note of something a breeze, through the utility of several functions, including text, voice recording, and attaching a picture as a visual reminder. You can also save notes, and search previous reminders you’ve written, and synch them all online by using a Web-based account. Taking notes has never been so kewl. WRITE THIS DOWN: FREE.

A Celebration of Friends:
Honoring the Past with a Fun Present — and Plans for the Future
A
lthough much of gay life revolves around the appreciation of—some might call it a Cult of—youth and beauty, at least one LGBT community organization believes that “maturity matters,” and they put their money where their mouths are, to back that up. A Celebration of Friends (ACOF), founded in 2001, has raised over $144,000, and they have donated it back to the LGBT community: that speaks volumes about the organization. “Our funds have been distributed to Tuesday’s Angels, the Pride Center at Equality Park, and Buzzy’s Boys,” says Tom Spence, the ex-Marine Founder and President of ACOF. “Being a 501(c) 4 organization, we always donate a percentage of our funds back into the community,” adds Spence, who sports the sobriquet, and is known to friends as “Tomcat.” In 2002, Spence and a few dedicated friends held the first ACOF “Celebration” in New Orleans, where 100 supporters turned out, and raised over $1,000 to support Buzzy’s Boys, a non-profit that assists children who are hospitalized from complications of HIV/AIDS. In 2003, ACOF held its annual meeting in Fort Lauderdale, where it’s been held—with the exception of one year, during which it was held in Miami—ever since. “A Celebration of Friends 2012” will be held June 21 to 24, at the Fort Lauderdale Airport Hilton, during the weekend of the Stonewall Street Festival and Parade. As the organization moves into its second decade, Spence & Co. have big plans for its members, as well as for the organization’s posterity. “We are currently working on Habitat of Friends,” says Spence. “Our good friend, Chuck Nichols [of Tuesday’s Angels] has been working with us to establish this retirement community for seniors. It is something that has long been needed,” he adds.

Spence grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi— “not an environment that is easy to grow up in,” he admits. “I was one of the ones who started Prime Timers, and Sage,” remembers Spence. “When I say ‘seniors,’ I don’t mean that all of the members are senior citizens. We have a number of members who just prefer the company of gentlemen who are a little more mature. Being a former Marine, along with [his late partner, Bill Elder] the Colonel, I founded “A Celebration of Friends. As you know, the older you get, you get farther from the mainstream, and it’s more difficult to ‘fit in’,” he explains. “We have now expanded into Europe, with chapters in France, and other locations with lots of new members. We look at it as all one family,” says Spence, who adds that ACOF has a special place in its organizational heart for Greater Fort Lauderdale, which the group refers to as the “Palm Springs of the East Coast.” Spence and his fellow board members feel a sense of duty to their organization’s past, as well as to the future of the LGBT community. They are especially grateful to those who have stepped up in support of their aims through the years. “This is our eleventh year, and we are still going strong,” Spence notes with optimism. “Tony Dee and Charlie Mielke of Tropics restaurant have been such strong supporters and sponsors of the event over the years—even going back to Chardee’s days.”Among the building blocks for a stronger organization, Spence and ACOF have added free HIV testing as an additional service to members. Kicking off their second decade, the future looks bright for these mature gay activists, and the men who admire them. For more information, celebrationoffriends.org.

Guy Nutrition By ANDY KRESS
M
ost of us know what a balanced diet should look like, but most of us don’t follow it. It does not seem to matter that eating the right foods improves your health, enhances the skin, helps lower our risk of disease, and most importantly gives you energy to perform life’s daily functions. Some of our most beneficial foods are fruits and vegetables, due mainly to their hydrating qualities and low calories. Always remember that what you’re drinking is just as important as what you are eating. Drinking the proper amount of water is essential to overall health. And no, soda does not count. It not only doesn’t cleanse the palate, it quickly overloads the body with sugar. Most Americans do not know that some of our favorite foods and drinks actually harm the body more than they help, especially when consumed in excess; just as some super-foods recharge the body more than others.
FOODS THAT HARM Caffeine is a major contributor to upsetting the body’s delicate balance. This comes in a variety of beverages and many other foods like chocolate. Excess caffeine not only overcharges your nervous system, it can inhibit calcium absorption, and even lead to osteoporosis in time. Salt is another ingredient that often is used in excess, and is very detrimental to your health. High blood pressure is a major side effect of a high sodium diet and can easily be prevented by moving the salt shaker from the table. Protein, when it comprises more than 25% of your diet, can not only raise your saturated fat levels, but is also very deleterious to your kidneys. Sugar is another ingredient found in just about anything. Excessive sugar intake leads to huge spikes in your insulin response system, and, over time, can lead to diabetes. Sugar also helps add loads of calories to foods and drinks, helping in

packing on the pounds, especially if inactive. Alcohol is extremely harmful to all organs of the body when used in excess on a constant basis. Alcohol loves to punish your kidneys and liver, as well as strip vital nutrients from the body.
FOODS THAT HELP There are some foods that are more beneficial to the body than others. These are called super-foods, and some of these foods even help you lose weight faster than most. Blueberries top the list with lots of antioxidants, phytonutrients and cancer fighting properties. Who cares if your mouth turns purple. Eat your blueberries! Wild caught salmon is very beneficial to the body providing high doses of Omega-3 fatty acids, lowering cholesterol and aiding in preventing inflammation. Eggs are full of choline, which helps fat from being absorbed in the liver and helps in preventing memory loss. Almonds contain high amounts of monounsaturated fats and fiber. Monounsaturated fats are healthy fats that aid in the reduction of body fat. Nuts are high in calories, so moderation is the key to this super-food. Broccoli is one of nature’s most nutrient-dense foods. Broccoli contains a ton of hunger curbing fiber, as well as lots of antioxidants that detoxify cell-damaging chemicals. Low-fat dairy products have been proven to give the body its recommended essential calcium, and helps burn fat.Think cottage cheese and you’ve got the picture. Beans are a great source of low fat protein and lots of fiber. Last, but not least is dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is known for its heart health benefits, as well as anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants. Good foods or bad, the choice is yours!
