Sharon Needles BY GRANT JAMES

Not Just Another Lazy Bitch

q

Sharon Needles isn’t your typical drag queen. She is an icon for a new generation. The reigning champion of Ru Paul’s Drag Race season 4, Sharon Needles has literally become “America’s Next Drag Superstar”. In lieu of her performance scheduled for Saturday at the Manor, I sat down with Sharon Needles to talk about doing drag, her biggest inspiration of the moment, and her celebrity crush. Let’s be honest, you’re DOMINATING the world of drag right now. You’re a personality. An icon. You were crowned “America’s Next Drag Superstar” in April 2012. To say you’ve lived up to your end of the bargain is an understatement...What’s this past year been like for you following the win? It’s been insane. I’ve been going city to city, country to country, timezone to timezone promoting the filthiest, quirkiest, transgressive act in the world. I love it but at the same time, drag queens are..How do I put this? We’re lazy as fuck. So, it was really hard for me to adapt to a 24/7 drag queen career. It was taxing because I’m used to being a lazy bitch. Do you get recognized often while you’re out and about? Do you go out in drag? No. I hate drag. I think that’s why me and Ru Paul are kind of similar. We don’t like it but we know if we want to work, we have to put it on. All the beauty is so ridiculously uncomfortable and taxing. If you ain’t payin’ me, I ain’t puttin’ that shit on. At this very moment, who inspires you? I’m really into GG Allin right now. He was pretty much the baddest punk rocker in the game. He would throw s*** on people, eat his own s***, cut himself, and eventually killed himself in the name of art. I’m really inspired by people who just take it way, way, way too far. How was Larry T’s Super Electric Party Machine in London? It was fantastic. I’ve been trying to work with Larry Tee for over a year, and a lot of people on my team say, ‘Sharon you’ve gotta look toward the future, you need to work with who’s hot.’ But I hate the future and I hate change. I live in a perpetual state of nostalgia. My idols aren’t Lady Gaga, Nicki

14

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

Minaj or Cher. [My idols] are kind of yesterday’s news. If I had one wish it would be to get in a time machine and get the fuck out of here I know that you’ve got a drag version of The Craft coming up. UK Pop singer Charli XCX has a love for The Craft as well and when we recently told her about the drag production, she lost her shit. We’re all so jealous that we won’t be able to see it down here. Any plans to take it on tour to major cities? Due to my schedule, it’s awful unlikely. I’m a busy, busy, busy drag queen. I would love it if it went on the road... What can people expect from your performance at the Manor? They’re going to see Sharon Needles, one of their favorite drag queens, performing five songs off of her debut album, “PG-13,” and basically embarrassing the shit out of herself. What I lack in talent, I make up for by being one of the most theatrical drag shows on the road. Favorite scary movie? No questions asked: Return of the Living Dead. Murder, marry, fuck: Paula Deen, Carrot Top and Tan Mom. Paula Deen I would marry because she could take off some of the negative attention that I get. Carrot Top I would fuck because I think he’s so fucking hot and he’s so plastic looking. I love men that look like women. I guess I would murder Tan Mom because she has taken bookings away from me before. In NYC they kind of made her a club icon. She makes the same amount of money that I do and she doesn’t do anything except get tan. Get her the fuck out of here. Talk to me about Party City. Actually, I think the reason that Phi Phi O’Hara called me “Party City” was because she was really just bringing up her own personal transgressions. I’ve never been to a Party City, except for once. They have neon overhead lighting, and no drag queen should ever been seen in that light.

guymagtube

Where is Sharon Needles in the year 2020? Dead. Probably from a drug overdose. Poor thing. Why is the world so basic right now? We’re so overloaded with technology and information that it scares us, so we’re returning back to a basic 1950’s mindset. I’ve never seen the world get this PC. I don’t know how it so quietly and quickly entered our pop culture. This shit has gotten out of hand. See Sharon Needles Saturday, July 6 at The Manor. Doors open at 10:30 p.m. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Independence Day

Florida Supercon 2013

o The Fourth of July is a day for all Americans to celebrate our independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain that just so happened to fall on July 4, 1776. In South Florida, “official” firework displays and celebrations take place on virtually every city’s beach, held by the city itself. Fort Lauderdale Beach, Miami Beach, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, and West Palm Beach all host waterfront celebrations. As the events are familyfriendly, they usually wrap up around 9 or 9:30, leaving you with ample time to take a cab to the drive to celebrate your independence in a way that we as Americans are more accustomed to: bar-hopping. Beginning at sunset in various cities in the tri-county area. Check your city’s official site for more details.

oFlorida Supercon is South Florida’s answer to Comic-Con, an annual convention held to celebrate all things nerdy. Imagine an environment where comic book, sci-fi, anime and video game fans can all come together to proudly celebrate and enjoy interests that others may find childlike or even embarrassing. A nerd convention wouldn’t be a nerd convention without special guests, and Florida Supercon is no exception. This year, they’ve announced George Takei, Kevin Smith, Laurie Holden, Dana Snyder and more. 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. Miami Airport Convention Center. 711 NW 72nd Ave, Miami, 33126.

Lady Bunny Live oI Drag personality Lady Bunny is more than just a pretty face. The comedian, singer/songwriter, DJ, MC and actress has a diverse resume, but perhaps her biggest feat was creating Wigstock – a festival of drag and music taking place on Labor Day in New York for nearly 20 years. Lady Bunny’s official site says it best: “With her glitzy outfits, sky-high wigs, and false eyelashes long enough to embarrass even Tammy Faye Bakker, multi-talented drag artiste Lady Bunny would turn heads even if looking glamorous was her only talent. But this isn’t just another man in a dress.” Amen. See her perform live exclusively at Village Pub. 10 p.m. Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Mona’s Fourth of July Spectacular o In memory of “Pizza Hut Dave,” Mona’s is hosting their fourth annual fundraiser for The Pet Project, a charitable organization that aims to encourage and assist people with life-threatening illnesses to keep their pets. With raffles all day and night, a hot dog cookout, an auction, and a dunk tank, this kiki is marvelous with a cause. 5:30 p.m. Mona’s Cocktail Lounge. 502 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304. THE WEEK 100k Watts of Bass oIf you missed Caspa due to Fourth of July shenanigans, don’t fret – another Grade A dubstep artist is heading your way: Excision. The Canadian dubstep producer is known for his insane live shows, but this year he’s literally turned up the dial. His 2013 video stage, titled “Executioner,” is just as it sounds, pairing aggressively mechanical theatrics with a 100,000 watt bass system. 100,000 watts. Patrons are strongly advised to wear ear plugs as this show is the definition of loud. Excision will be performing with electro group Krewella. 9 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Solange Knowles: Breaking Away from the Family Name o Solange has officially stepped out of her sister Beyonce’s shadow. Critically-acclaimed music and a soulful, yet unique voice puts Solange Knowles in a league of her own. Her 2012 single, “Losing You,” was the ultimate sleeper hit, garnering the singer-songwriter a completely new fan base (more “hip” publications such as Pitchfork and NME praised her 2012 EP, “True”), effectively separating her from her sister, ala Ashlee Simpson’s “Autobiography.” While touring she is working on a full-length album to follow up on her 2012 EP, “True.” 8:30 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Redeye Opening oCelebrating its 8th year, red eye showcases artists that are on the brink of greatness. According to artserve’s website (the event’s organizer), “The event has become the 954’s underground art tour de force, a multimedia summer phenomenon highlighting street art, comic art and social commentary in the form of visual and performance pieces, sandwiched with music, interactive installations, fashion, food trucks, short film premiers and a live graffiti challenge.” July 6 is the opening night of the exhibit. 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Artserve. 1350 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Kidd Madonny’s Super Party o If you missed Kidd Madonny’s set for Stonewall Pride, you have the opportunity to catch him again. As part of his “Volume Events,” Madonny’s party (appropriately titled “Super Party”)

will take place at Exit 66 this time. Packed with a “Superman: Man of Steel” theme, the four-hour party will include 3-D special effects, dancers and supreme dance beats from Madonny himself. Sexy hero and villain attire are recommended but not required. 10 p.m. Exit 66. 219 S Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33316.

Sharon Needles: Red, White & Ru o Sharon Needles is really the queen of drag. Her recent album release, “PG-13,” is a collection of horror and Halloween-inspired dance tracks, featuring collaborations with Amanda Lepore, Alaska and Ru Paul herself. When we spoke to Sharon about her upcoming performance and what people can expect, she said, “People are going to see Sharon Needles...basically embarrassing the shit out of herself. What I lack in talent, I make up for in theatrics.” 10 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Food, Drinks and Jazz oSometimes a jazz-filled, relaxing night is just what the doctor ordered. At BB King’s Blues Club in West Palm Beach, there’s a new artist playing every night, live, for your entertainment. A full kitchen, bar, and dress code make this a swanky Sunday option. This Sunday, Franklin Richard and Rosco Martinez will be performing. 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. BB King’s Blues Club. 550 S Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Beyonce: The Mrs. Carter Tour oBeyonce Knowles’s alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is now Mrs. Carter. She’s evolved: she’s classier (appearing as royalty in promotional photos for the tour) and of course, a mother. The tour name is a reference to her marriage to Shawn Carter (JayZ), announced following her Super Bowl halftime show, in which she reunited with Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Following the birth of daughter Blue Ivy, an HBO documentary and a halftime show, it’s a miracle Knowles has the energy to undergo a tour. A new album from the singer is expected to come out sometime this year. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.

Dawg House Where Chicago Dogs Rule BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

o

In case you’ve been living under a rock—or perhaps posing for the bulbs in Wilton Manors—the Chicago Dog is world famous. It’s not a dog as in canine, but rather as in an all-beef frankfurter, typically Kosher and made by Vienna Beef Ltd. That’s the company started in 1893, and still uses the original frankfurter. (Vienna Beef also has a gay CEO, btw.) The Vienna Beef dawg is simmered to perfection and placed in a warm poppy seed roll, and topped by yellow mustard, neon green relish, chopped onions, tomato slices, and pickled sports peppers with a dash of celery salt. And it is this classic Chicago-Style Dawg ($3.49) that is king at Dawg House. Using all the traditional ingredients, the resulting hot dog is an astounding success if you are looking for authenticity. For those who like their hot dogs grilled and with catsup, “fagetit”—as they’d say on Chicago’s South Side. This is a Chicago Dog, a Red Hot, a dragged through the garden weiner. The price point is reasonable as well with $6.49 gaining you a combo (fries and a drink) with a jumbo frank costing you an additional $1.00 on any of its hot dog offerings. TRAVEL

Belfast The City of Surprises BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

o

It wasn’t too long ago, when any mention of Belfast was always preceded by the adjective “wartorn.” The capital of Northern Ireland was the center of a intense and violent struggle between the Catholic and Protestant populations in the region between 1969 and 1998, locally known as “The Troubles.” Since the halting of this campaign of domestic terrorism, however, the city has rediscovered its balance, prospered with a planned orchestration of redevelopment, and emerged to be Ireland’s art and cultural center. Not a small amount of the effort has been at the hands of the LGBT community, which has established the largest population of gays and lesbians on the island. This coming weekend, the LGBT community is proudly on display as friends and family gather to support the local Belfast Pride Festival, now in its 23rd year. The height of the celebration happens on Saturday, July 6, with nearly 20,000 expected to attend. Travelling to Belfast International Airport from Fort Lauderdale is easily accomplished via United Airlines, which for $1500 plus change will fly you to Newark, NJ where a non-stop on United will take you to Blarney. Depending on your connection, the entire flight takes between 15 and 20 hours.. Once in Belfast, we highly recommend staying at either the Dukes at Queens (65-67 University St) or the Merchant Hotel (16 Skipper St). The attraction of the Dukes is the size. This is a boutique hotel that’s a short walk to Queens University and the Botanical Gardens with impeccable rooms, a lovely restaurant and cocktail lounge, and a helpful staff that does its utmost to make you feel like family. The Merchant Hotel, on the other hand, is stunning in its architecture and commanding in its elegance. Housed inside a former bank building, the Merchant is located in the historic Cathedral quarter, a short distance from a host of visitor attractions including Victoria Square Shopping Centre, the Ulster Museum, City Hall, the Titanic Quarter, the Waterfront Hall and the Odyssey Arena. guymag.net

In addition to the Merchant Hotel, the Cathedral quarter (named for its centerpiece St. Anne’s Cathedral on Donegall St) is the heart of the gay neighborhood. You’ll quickly see that this is an area in transition, with many empty stores and warehouse—exactly the type of space that gays love to gentrify and turn into the trendiest part of town. The hottest gay dance club in town continues to be the Kremlin (96 Donegall St). Now in its 14th year, the place has its act together, except at the front door, where overzealous bouncers make a habit of intimidating the meek. Just perform like the stars you are, and you should have no problem. Smile and enter, and unless you feel a big hand on your shoulder, keep moving. The Kremlin is connected to another favorite gay club called the Union Street (8-14 Union St), which Sunday bingo is all the rage. Buy a drink at Union Street and get half off the cover charge at Kremlin. Such a deal. The Mynt (2-16 Dunbar St) refers to itself as Belfast’s premiere polysexual club. Apparently, if you make up a word, you own the scene. It is a fun night out, when a quieter time is what you’re looking for. Mynt has a reputation for elegance. Sometimes that’s enough. For gentlemen of a certain age, there’s Fox’s Den (110 Donegal St) located on the second floor. While the clientele are seasoned, the bartenders here are some of the hottest in town. Do not write this club off. It’s new and climbing. theguymag

NUTRITION

Just one more drink... BY ANDY

KRESS

o

Consuming alcohol is one of America’s favorite leisure time activities. Having a drink or two with friends to spice up the day or evening out is common place in most of our lives. But, having a drink or two usually does not stop there for most. It is more like three, four or five. This over-consumption of alcohol with friends is all well and fine—occasionally--but repeated days and nights in a row of excess drinking can really wreck havoc on your health. Yet, despite the known risks, weekend after weekend we see the same faces out at the bars or local clubs getting sloshed time and again. Every drinker has his or her limit, and the warning “Drink in Moderation” isn’t just some puritan ethic. It’s essential a life or death matter. If you drink alcohol on a daily basis, health care professionals recommend no more than one alcoholic beverage a day for woman, and two alcoholic beverages a day for a man. Keeping your alcoholic consumption within these boundaries will enable you to stay within guidelines for optimal health. Taking control over your alcohol consumption not only shows others how strong you are, but how smart and healthy you as well. Beer and alcohol have been around since about 4000 B.C., and its effects and health benefits have been around since that time as well. These two beverages have some great health benefits, such as lowering the risk of heart disease by thinning out the blood and keeping plaque from forming on the arteries. Other health benefits have included enhanced brain function. That’s right, alcohol can help make you smarter, but only if drank in moderation. Alcohol is great for relieving anxiety, especially since it lowers inhibitions. Lowering inhibitions is where alcohol got its nickname, “liquid courage”. But no matter what you may call your drink, guymag.net

cheers to drinking to your good health. On the other hand, over-consumption is a slow march to certain death. The first organ to feel the wrath of the alcohol overload is the all-important liver. The liver breaks down foods and beverages and turns them into useable forms of energy. When that useable form of energy is only coming from alcohol, many unhealthy by-products are produced and circulated throughout the body, only to then be refiltered and damage the liver a second time. Cirrhosis of the liver is the end result. Having far too many drinks on a constant basis can produce cancers of the mouth, throat and larynx. Additionally, alcohol abuse has also been linked as the primary cause of cancer in every living organ in the human body. Obesity is another dangerous side effect of overconsuming alcohol. Obesity can affect all aspects of your health and combining it with the deleterious effects of over-consumption makes you are a heart attack waiting to happen. Malnutrition is another common side effect of drinking alcohol too often. A suppressed appetite from heavy drinking translates into either a very poor diet, or consuming no food at all. Diminishing the body of vital nutrients inhibits its ability to eliminate alcohol’s toxic by-products, thus weakening the body as a whole and leaving increased chance for disease to set in. All of these conditions are brought on by your need to over-consume. You are the one who makes the decision to drink too much, or to drink in moderation. You! Take responsibility now and start consuming foods and drinks in moderation. It will support your all-over wellness, and make you the very best you can be at any age. To your health. Andy Kress is a nationally certified fitness trainer and nutrition counselor and the owner of Kress Fitness Studio. He can be reached at 954-789-3930 or at andyfitnesstrainer@gmail.com. theguymag
