All’s Well that’s Cazwell
BY SHANE GALLAGHER
q
Before Thrift Shop by Macklemore ruled the airwaves, comedy hip hop, with its lighter and more humorous style, was carried by several significant acts. In the eighties, the Beastie Boys rhymed how we all gotta fight for our right to parrrrty. They were followed in the nineties by Eminem who carried the genre into the millennium alongside artists like Eamon (“I Love Them Hoes”) and Nerdcore. While few rappers make comedy hip hop their focus, the genre has a substantial loyal following and has been a money-earner for a select few. Out hip hopper Cazwell earned his hipster credibility and fattened his wallet with a steady flow of hilarious yet danceable hip hop tracks, including “Ice Cream Truck,” “Rice & Beans” and “I Seen Beyoncé At Burger King”. His hypo-manic take on pop culture helped him to rack in over ten million views on YouTube and sell over one million downloads. This summer, he returns with the first single from his soon-to-be-released album Hard 2 B Fresh. With its horn-ridden electro beats, “Guess What?” is a slightly more serious direction for the rapper. Cazwell sheds his “Weird Al” Yankovic skin for a more Missy Eliot vibe, proclaiming his greatness, or rather, his “hawtness,” through smart-ass rhymes and the help of vocalist Luciana. Who is “hawter than a chili pepper” these days? I was just saying the other day that I think Bruno Mars is totally hot. He’s like the perfect pocket straight. I’d hit it. Is it true you have a man crush on Kanye West? Very true. I say that because of his talent. He’s

one of my favorite rappers of all time. Love his new work. What’s up with your Judge Judy obsession? Judge Judy is the smartest person alive. I watch her everyday. Have you always enjoyed showing off your body? Yes definitely. It all started when I was working at an East Village dive where hosting in your underwear was mandatory. Of course, you have to monitor your body if your shirt is going to be off. I try to stay in shape now. For the most part, I enjoy being healthy. It’s rewarding. If my body is in shape, I find I’m in a much better mood. Would you ever pose “full monty” for pics? No. I like to leave something to the imagination. Madonna posed nude in photos… just saying. Yeah, I know, and everyone knows that I love me some Madonna. She changed the game and I give her all my respect for that. Okay, I suppose if I were offered an obscene amount of money to pose nude, I wouldn’t say no. Growing up, were you a cool kid? I was bullied, especially by the jocks in the school. I was flamboyant and fashionable. I hung out a lot with high school dropouts in the goth and drama scenes. Out of all my close friends, I was the only one to graduate high school. It was too difficult for my gay friends to make it through, from all the abuse and crap that they got. I didn’t start to like high school until my senior year.
guymagtube
How would your young self view the big, gay rapping star that you are today? I would think that I’m fuckin’ awesome. I always knew I wanted to be a stage performer. I was inspired by artists that put on great shows. Any artist in particular? I learned a lot from Peaches. I think that she’s the best live performer I’ve ever seen. Do you have many young fans? Yeah, younglings love my music! I have parents come up to me at shows all the time to tell me how their six-year old daughter loves “Ice Cream Truck” or “Beyonce at Burger King” and sings it all day. How do you describe your sound? Whether it’s Hip Hop or EDM, I like to make music that people can dance to. My goal is to create beats I would play as a DJ. The new album has a lot of sounds going on but ultimately you can play the whole thing through at a party. What themes are you exploring in your music? For the most part, the theme of my music is a gay guy living in New York City. I hope I make music most people can relate to. I find if people can identify with the music, it has more power. What is it about expressing yourself through rhymes that appeals to you? I’ve always been attracted to the power of rhyme. Even when I was a kid I would memorize Shel Silverstein poems and act them out for the old ladies in church. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that magic spells are in rhyme form. When you write a good set of bars, it’s very empowering. I went through a serious break up this year and did a lot of rhyming lyrical therapy. It definitely helped. You’re single? Sadly, I am. You sound like a lover scorned. Were you cheated on? Damn. Have you been reading my journal? Cheaters suck. Being cheated on is really bad on your self worth, especially when you love the person. I actually take monogamy seriously when I have a boyfriend. I enjoy being in a relationship. It’s a job, but if I decide to take it on, I strive to be good at it. I’d rather have one person I can trust and be a freak with than dip in a bunch of dudes. Wow, so Cazwell believes monogamy is the ideal? Loving yourself is the ideal. But, yeah, everyone seeks a partner, I think.
guymag.net
Do you mind being viewed as a sex object? No I love it. Might as well enjoy it while I can, right? I honestly don’t see myself as all that sexy unless I’m on stage. When I’m on stage I’m everything that I want to be and my most confident. I think everyone is sexy when they are doing what they love and that’s the truth. Is it important to you that people recognize the brains behind the brawn? Yes! I think that’s gonna happen with this album particularly. The only thing that ever really offends me is when people say I’m not talented, or that all I do is get hot guys to put in videos and that’s why I got popular. Writing simple songs actually takes talent. I haven’t always been good at it. Let’s talk Gaga. How did you come to work with her? I rapped on a remix package of “Just Dance”. Was that before she was famous? Yes, we did of couple shows together when she was promoting the album. I think she’s really cool. She’s the real deal. I remember when I met her at sound check at like 5pm on Avenue C (a street in the East Village of New York). She took herself very seriously and was flawless head-to-toe. Even though the stage was like 3 feet by 5 feet, she thought about ever angle of the show. The way she focused on it, you would have thought she was performing Madison Square Garden. Tell the truth: did you think she would make it as big as she has? Yes. I did. I immediately saw potential in her as a pop artist. “Just Dance” was a great pop song. That record got so much burn and everyone was requesting it. I did question if the public was ready for such a fashionable person but it happened at the right time, just as high fashion came in. Remember when Rihanna and Beyonce were wearing all those crazy abstract clothes too? Perfect timing. What do you think Gaga had that propelled her to superstardom? Great songs. She gets so much attention for her looks but, in all actuality, if her songs sucked, no one would care. She’s very good at arrangement and hooks and she can sing. I miss her. I hope she comes out with some new music soon. If you could wake up with anyone naked under your sheets… who would you choose? Kanye West. But I hope he calls me back. Cazwell’s “Guess What?” is available on iTunes now. Visit Cazwell.com for more information.

THE WEEK
Kathy Griffin, Air Supply and The 2(X)IST Fashion Show ____________________ ____________________ Thursday
7/11
Kathy Griffin: Red-Hot Comedy o Kathy Griffin’s stand-up is a quintessential comedic show. She’s witty, over-the-top, filthy, loud and downright hilarious – what’s not to like? An LGBT activist who fought for issues such as the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and the ongoing battle for same-sex-marriage, Griffin is recognized for more than just her dazzling wit. After gaining notoriety on the NBC sitcom, “Suddenly Susan,” Griffin went on to become a recognized comedian, eventually landing her own reality show on Bravo, titled “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.” Her recently canceled weekly talk show, “Kathy,” even featured vocals from the comedian herself in the theme song. See Griffin’s hilarity for one night only at Hard Rock Live. 7 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.
Open Casting Call For Stoli Model oStoli is looking for “the most original Stoli guy.” The winner receives trips to NY and LA, four nights at Island House Key West, an Andrew Christian photo shoot (including a role in an upcoming Andrew Christian video), and of course, the title of the “2013 Most Original Stoli Guy.” This is a night you’ll want to leave your go-to “cookie cutter look” at home. Stoli cocktails will be flowing! 8 to 10 p.m. Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305. guymag.net

Velocity of Gary oThe Stonewall National Museum & Archives isn’t just all art and historical documents: you may be surprised to know that it also screens movies monthly. This month’s pick is the 1999 Dan Ireland film, “Velocity of Gary,” starring Thomas Jane, Salma Hayek,Vincent D’Onofrio, and Ethan Hawke. The film follows the title character as he forms a new family with a hodgepodge of friends from the streets of NYC. The touching story is a must-see for anyone in the LGBT community. 7 p.m. Stonewall National Museum & Archives. 1300 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

THE WEEK Air Supply oAustralian rock duo Air Supply are pretty much a legend in the soft rock scene. Prevalent in the early 80s, the duo (consisting of Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock) were successful worldwide, with eight top-ten hits in the US and over 100 million album sales. Some of the band’s notable singles were “All Out of Love,” “Lost in Love,” “The One That You Love,” “Here I Am,” “Even the Nights Are Better,” and “The Power of Love.” Weird. It feels like there’s some sort of reoccurring theme. 8 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.
Crafts and Drafts oOnce a month, something very special happens in downtown Fort Lauderdale: a community comes together to share a common bond. An interest in craft, DIY and locally made goods has caught on in South Florida (thanks Pinterest), and now, locals with hidden talents or hobbies are coming out of the woodwork to congregate and buy each others stuff. So whether you’re buying, selling or just browsing (yes, there’s a full bar), this is a wonderful way for you to support local merchants. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.
”Alice In Wonderland” Gone Wild oIf you’re looking for a nonsensical kind of night, Respectable Street has a themed party that’s right up your alley: an “Alice In Wonderland” inspired night of burlesque. The Reckless Dames are South Florida’s leading burlesque troupe, blending old and new styles to create a unique product like nothing you’ve seen before. Wild costumes are paired with matching pasties in the elaborate strip-teases, and with an “Alice In Wonderland” theme at play, you know the show is going to be eye-popping. Did we mention there will be “Alice In Wonderland” themed art provided by local artists? 10 p.m. Respectable Street. 518 Clematis St, West Palm Beach, 33401.

If you’re more hungry than usual, check out their “Big ‘Dicts.” The “Big ‘Dicts”put a fantastic spin on the traditional eggs benedict, offering up a unique variety of ingredients atop a warm, fresh biscuit. A DJ and drink specials ($5 mimosas and $3 bloody Marys) will make sure you stick around for the remainder of the day. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rosie’s Bar & Grill. 2449 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

DINING
Sirocco Mediterranean Restaurant & Lounge Mediterranean Mystery with European Flair BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
o
A giant chandelier hangs heavy over the center of Sirocco, the new Mediterranean restaurant that’s wedged among a host of others at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino outside eating and shopping experience. Sirocco is the traditional name of the unexpected wind that blows from nowhere over the Sahara, and it’s with this same sort of mystery that Sirocco, the restaurant, presents itself. While the linens are crisp, the lighting is dim and seductive, with dozens of hookah pipes adding their special aroma and exotic flair that has nothing to do with the excitement that comes out of the kitchen. There, the magic is all from master chef Federico Elkarout who was born in Lebanon, and trained in Italy, but it’s his Arabic roots that are display here. Plan on starting your meal with a hearty bowl of Lentil Soup ($5), a deliciously thick treat that is as nutritious as it is tasty. This brown lentil and potato of each meat on a wooden skewer. TRAVEL
California Playing the Same-Sex Marriage Card BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
o
Less than two hours after the Supreme Court announced the defeat of the Defense of Marriage Act, and the drop kick to California’s Proposition 8, the international travel site Orbitz (orbitz.com) launched its latest on-line contest offering a pair of first-class tickets to destinations allowing gay marriage, highlighting the Golden State. According to its advertisement, its “Take Vacation Back Photo Contest” celebrates “the defeat of DOMA and marriage equality progress!” The ad featured to men leaping in joy over what looked like the Great Salt Lake. (And you thought white boys couldn’t jump.) The Orbitz campaign is only the latest effort by the online travel agency to push gay travel. (It doesn’t hurt that the Human Rights Campaign has given Orbitz a perfect Corporate Equality Index score, don’t you know.) Not to be outdone, San Francisco’s JW Marriott Union Square (500 Post Street) announced its “Love Is Love Is Love” marketing campaign aimed at same-sex couples. For a mere $324 plus, a pair of same-sex guests can expect to receive a onenight stay, a three-course dinner from executive chef Ben Mattman heavy on aphrodisiacs, two complimentary glasses of non-vintage champagne, and two custom-designed “Love to Love to Love” robes made from 100 percent post-consumer plastic bottles (which we’re told somehow feels like cashmere). The hotel, originally built by architect John Portman in 1987 as the Portman Hotel, is a deluxe affair with large rooms and a city view that, while not exactly commanding, isn’t the selling point here. The Marriott Corp. gets what much of America is increasingly learning: there is a great deal of money to be made promoting gay marriages and offering services directed marketed to same-sex couples. California officials estimate that as many as 37,000 gay marriages will take place in the state over the next three years, generating $50 million in sales tax for the financially strapped economy from $492 million in added revenue. These estimates are considerably higher than the figures guymag.net
generated by New York State that began to legalize same-sex weddings in 2011. Manhattan added $16 million to city revenue, on a total of $259 million in spending. Because of its beaches and West Coast location, California is expected to far exceed those figures. In Pasadena, California, the Langham Huntington Pasadena (1401 S Oak Knoll Ave) is offering an elegant vacation package to same-sex couples that incorporates a garden wedding and a ballroom reception. The hotel, built in 1907, offers a choice of two tastefully planted grounds, including a tranquil Japanese garden. This, the hotel suggests, is perfect for those same-sex couples who would like to exchange vows with their significant others “under the gaze of friends and family.” In this garden, there is a koi-filled pond over which stands a red wooden bridge, perfect it seems for that first married kiss, representing “crossing into a new life together.” Word of caution: the hotel’s motto is “refined indulgence,” so if the Huntington is in your future plans, behave. And then there’s John Cassese, (1440 4th St, Santa Monica) known as the Dance Doctor to you. Cassese is celebrating the heave-ho of Proposition 8 by giving special classes to same-sex couples who want to prepare for their nuptials and their first dance together. He’ll take all the guesswork out of who leads and who follows. Your only decision is who pays his bill. Let the California celebrations begin.

Summer Travel Survival Course BY TOM
BONANTI
o
Many of my clients have been on the road lately. For some, the summer is a time for much needed vacations and cruises. For others, business travel--as much as 50-75 days on the road--is cutting more and more into their workout goals. Aggravation over flight delays, missed connections and lost baggage are but a few of the stresses of modern travel. Combine these with fast food, poor sleep and missed workouts and you have a recipe for disaster. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, don’t throw in the towel! Simply adjust your mindset and prioritize your goals. You CAN stay fit and trim and keep that hard earned muscle without missing a beat. Firstly, learn to take control of your nutrition. Think ahead and check out restaurants online and find places that have healthy menus that are within your budget. When dining out often the low-fat or vegetarian meal is a good choice. Stay away from breads and appetizers and stick with soup or a salad before your main course. Take the skin off chicken and scrape those salty, fatty sauces to the side. Skip the dessert! You only live once so remember, one sumptuous meal and a bottle of wine won’t set you back that far! Speaking of sauce, try to set a limit of two drinks per day if you have to drink at all. Alcohol not only makes you hungrier, it’s also loaded with calories. There are seven calories in every gram of alcohol. Less than two ounces of alcohol a day can have a significant effect on raising your blood pressure. You don’t need any more pressure than you already have! Secondly, you need to exercise on the road. Weights, swimming, running, whatever, just keep active. Call ahead to see if your hotel or guesthouse has a fitness center or pool. If you’re staying at a facility sans gym and pool, then find out if there is a health club nearby. You may have to pay $10 - $50 for a few days’ pass, but it will be the wisest travel expense you’ll make. It’ll also give you an opportunity to try out your workout in a new locale with different equipment and scenery to inspire you to new heights. Set goals that you can hit while on the road guymag.net
with your workouts. For example, it could be a cardiovascular-based goal like seeing how many laps you can perform in the hotel pool. Or if you have no gym available and are confined to your room, see how many crunches or push-ups you can do in a one-minute period. Remember, fitness is more than counting calories and hitting the gym a few hours a week. It’s a lifestyle that requires sacrifice and planning. Have fun with it and be adventurous as well! For more tips for sizzling summer workouts, contact me, Tom Bonanti at Pumpn’Inc. Gym, 1271 NE 9th Avenue Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. 33304 or on line at at trainertomb@aol.com.
