If You Can’t Stand the Heat
ES Collection Cooks Up Sexy New Briefs
q
ES Collection has always been a steamy sports brand. But this summer’s provocative ad campaign for their new brief collection turns up the temps to an all
time high. Barcelona-based ES Collection clearly likes to have fun, but behind the hyper sexuality is a brand committed to quality, technology and design. The brand has done plenty to provide the innovation to briefs gay men want. Their signature molded pouch helps to increase size, but also to provide lift and comfort, giving guys the perfect jeans bulge. It’s become so popular, ES Collection has incorporated the form-complementing technology into many of this season’s underwear collections. Briefs are available in an assortment of styles from boxer to trunks,

jockstraps and even body suits. There are many different fabrics as well, including cotton, nylon, polyamide, modal, and even polyester mesh. While most designer brands lose shape after three to four washes, founder Ed Suner says his briefs are built to stand the test of time. He promises “fabrics and elastic will never lose shape in the wash” and he backs it up with a guarantee. If you can’t beat the heat, use it as an excuse to show off some red hot undies from this smoltering collection. For more information on ES Collection’s 2013 underwear collection, and more photos and videos, visit ESCollectionUSA.com. Free shipping on all purchases.

THE WEEK
Cedric, Chaka Khan, Dave Matthews Band and a Foam Party ____________________ Thursday
7/18
One of the Original Kings of Comedy o Cedric the Entertainer is a king of comedy. First appearing on the radar of mainstream viewers through the “Steve Harvey Show,” Cedric went on to star in the “Barbershop” films as well as The “Original Kings of Comedy.” Cedric is slated to take the reigns as host of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” in the 2013-2014 season, replacing current host Meredith Viera. President of Disney-ABC, Janice Marinelli, says, “With his deep roots as a successful stand-up comedian and actor, Cedric will bring his fresh approach and unpredictable fun to the show.” When it comes down to it, Cedric is a supreme stand-up comedian, so this is really a performance that any fan wouldn’t want to miss. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

Dave Matthews Band oFormed in 1991, Dave Matthews Band has been entertaining audiences for decades. Their first studio album, “Under the Table and Dreaming,” achieved some commercial success, with singles peaking in the top 20 under Billboard Pop Songs. Their second album, “Crash,” is where they received national success, with single “Crash Into Me,” one of their biggest singles to date. Though guymag.net
they’ve been touring for decades, DMB is surprisingly only on their eighth studio album (2012’s “Away from the World”). The group are notorious for their live albums and sold-out stadium shows, focusing more on performances than cranking out CDs. Though “Away from the World” was one of the band’s slower selling albums, it received praise from critics and placed 29th on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 50 albums of 2012. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Chaka Khan oSpeaking of people who have been performing to a loyal fan base for decades, Chaka Khan is in town. Known informally as the “Queen of FunkSoul,” Chakha Khan began as the frontwoman of the funk band Rufus. She went on to pursue a successful solo career in 1978, while remaining in Rufus. The “I’m Every Woman” singer has quite a lot under her belt: she’s won 10 Grammy Awards (22 nominations), a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction nomination, and is currently working on her twelfth studio album, “iKhan.” Khan’s biggest hits to date include “Tell Me Something Good,” “Ain’t Nobody,” “Sweet Thing,” “I’m Every Woman,” and “I Feel for You.” 8 p.m. James L. Whatever the reason, you won’t want to miss the club’s first foam party and dance event. 311, Sublime with Rome and Cypress Hill: Under One Roof oIf you’re looking to relive serious 90’s memories, don’t fret: the ultimate lineup is heading your way. Yes it’s a little unusual that 311 and Sublime with Rome will be under the same roof as Cypress Hill, but at the same time, it makes perfect sense. Throw in support act Pennywise and you’ve got yourself a throwback concert worthy of a few memories. 311 (known for their singles “Down” and “All Mixed Up”) is a monster of a band. They have sold over 8.5 million records in the US alone, and are currently working on their eleventh studio album, to be released later this year. Sublime with Rome is a collaboration between original members of the group Sublime (known for their singles “What I Got” and “Santeria”) and singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez. They formed in 2009, performing songs by Sublime, before releasing their own album, “Yours Truly,” in 2011. 5 p.m. Cruzan Amphithteatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Shock-Rock Hits Miami Beach
Bartenders Boxers and Briefs
oMarilyn Manson is the definition of “shockrocker.” He’s been scaring parents since the early 90s, while simultaneously pushing boundaries and opening minds. The band’s lineup has changed over the years, but it currently contains two of the original members: Marilyn Manson himself, and guitarist Twiggy Ramirez. The members created their names using the first name of a famous sex symbol and the last name of a famous serial killer (i.e. Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson), a tongue-in-cheek jab at American culture. With names like that, you can imagine what the live performances have been like over the years: Manson has wiped his butt

Dixie Pig BBQ North Carolina Comes to South Florida BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN
o
There’s a little shack of a restaurant on North Dixie Highway—little more than a roadside stand really. It calls itself Dixie Pig BBQ, and with its bright orange façade among a string of auto repairs and scaffolding shops, it’s hard to miss. At first glance, two things stand out immediately. It is the only local place proudly billing “Authentic North Carolina Barbecue.” And there’s always a “Help Wanted” sign in the window. For the uninitiated, North Carolina Barbecue uses a vinegarbased sauce commonly marinated over pork shoulder, though chicken and beef are also slow cooked in the tasty brew. At Dixie Pig, they smoke can’t go wrong with the Breakfast Burrito ($5.95) their meats for 14 hours (4 hours for chicken), and or the Biscuits with Country Sausage Gravy ($4). the result is a unique savory wipe-your-face-whenEqually good and extremely filling. you’re done menu. TRAVEL
Belvedere Guest Hotel
Fire Island The Legend Continues BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
o
“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” Or so felt Oscar Wilde who wrote that line in “Lady Windemere’s Fan,” a play which premiered at London’s St. James’s Theatre in 1892. Later that same year, the very openly gay Wilde began a speaking tour of America, and for a brief time during the summer, visited the old Perkinson Hotel in Cherry Grove— even then the fun place to go on Fire Island, the central barrier island to the south of Long Island. What Wilde began was reinforced with the arrival during the 20s and 30s of gays and lesbians of all stripes—from movie stars and designers to the hustlers and companions who served their needs. Next door to the Grove is Fire Island Pines, the other gay destination on the Island and home to the most expensive real estate in this tiny enclave of a few hundred. That number, of course, swells into the thousands after Memorial Day when the “gay invasion” officially begins and continues until Labor Day. There are a number of ways to get to Fire Island, but the most popular begins at Penn Station (7th Ave & 8th Ave between 31st St & 33rd St), where you want to find the Long Island Railroad’s train to Sayville. This is a multi-stop trip and will require you to change trains at either the Babylon or Jamaica stations. Once in Sayville, take a $5.00 shuttle bus to the Fire Island Ferry, which during the summer leaves every two hours and will cost $14.00 round-trip out to the Island. For those who like their meals in prepackaged combos, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) provides the Beach Getaway Package Deal ($32) which includes round-trip tickets assembled for you and includes all the above. If you are guymag.net
traveling during peak times and on weekends, be aware that both the train and the ferry can carry only so many people and will often be standing room only. On the plus side, this body-to-body experience can speed up the cruising, and new friends are routinely made on the Ferry trip alone. Total time for this outing is 2 ½ hours. You can of course drive to Sayville, where you’ll have to ditch your rental car in any case, since there are only emergency vehicles allowed on Fire Island itself. There is also the option of a seaplane, which can make the trip from city to Fire Island in 20 minutes. Shoreline Aviation (800-443-0031) operates out of the 23rd street seaport on the east side of Manhattan. Baggage is limited to 20 pounds total weight. You’ll want to pack lightly in any case, for even it you take the train, there is no need for a lot of fancy duds on Fire Island. The largest hotel on Fire Island is in Cherry Grove. The Grove Hotel (631-597-6600) is the local version of a Motel 6—basic lodgings that are conveniently located in the thick of the social action. A standard room at the Grove will currently set you back $369 on a Saturday, $299 on a Friday, $199 on a Sunday, and $159 the remainder of the week. The Belvedere Guest Hotel (631-597-6448) is our favorite choice since the rooms have been totally renovated (thanks for Hurricane Sandy). There is a two-night minimum on weekends when luxury rooms go for $444 a night. Stay at this clothing optional resort and indulge yourself. The Pavilion Nightclub, which burned to the ground in 2011, reopened this summer and is back in full action. As with most things Fire Island, it gives HOT a new meaning. theguymag

FITNESS
Free-Weights Versus Machines BY TOM
BONANTI
o
Everyone needs variety in their training sessions in order to prevent boredom and guarantee results. Implementing techniques like supersets (working two opposing muscle groups at the same time) and compound sets (using two or three exercises for the same muscle group until fatigue) are great ways to get that extra burn in a muscle group. Alternating heavy training days with lighter training days now and then help to prevent injuries and burnout. When it comes to equipment, most gyms give you a variety of ways to get pumped. This being the case, I am constantly asked which produces the best results, free-weights or machines. Here are a few reasons why free-weights should be the basis of everyone’s resistance training regime: When you workout with dumbbells and barbells, it’s easier to take your joints through their full range of motion as you work out the muscles. Standing, with your feet spread apart at shoulder width, back straight and head looking straight ahead, is the preferred stance when lifting weights. This way you are more effective in developing the smaller synergistic (helping) muscles and stabilizer muscles when you are targeting a muscle group. Barbells and dumbbells are versatile and convenient. You can easily grab two 35 lb. dumbbells and do three sets of curls for biceps and then move a few inches down the rack and do triceps kickbacks with the 40’s. Power is improved more efficiently and to a greater extent through the use of free-weights. Other crucial aspects of fitness including lifting for size, improving flexibility, reducing body fat and muscle toning are all achieved more efficiently through the use of free-weights. There are a couple of disadvantages to freeweights. Dumbbells and barbells are sometimes guymag.net
clunky and have to be maintained and re racked. And if you’re working out at home, there is the whole issue of storage. Here are a few good reasons to use machines: Some machines, like the pec deck for the pectoralis major, are more efficient in isolating the muscle group. For group use, some machines are better in terms of space utilization. A case in point, one jaunt around the Universal machine and you can practically get a full body workout in no time. The disadvantages of machines are many. Most machines are very large to store, extremely pricey and tend to isolate only one muscle or muscle group at a time. The majority of these musclebuilding contraptions are built to serve an average sized person. Very short or very tall people find it almost impossible to use many of the machines currently on the market. Personally, I am a big fan of free-weights simply because you can do so much with them: build mass, increase flexibility, etc. Machines, if you have access to the right ones, can make your workouts quicker and help you isolate problem areas. Remember, nothing beats hard work, consistency and good old-fashioned sweat! For more tips on how to maximize your time in the gym, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. theguymag
