COVER

Pop Psychology Neon Trees Singer Tyler Glenn Tells All Neon Trees frontman Tyler Glenn has been a hot topic as of late, following his public coming out – in an interview with Rolling Stones nonetheless. It was a big move for the Mormon singer, who has been struggling to balance his faith and sexuality for a number of years. With the release of the band’s new album, Pop Psychology, Glenn and bandmates are currently on tour in support of the LP. The band will be making a stop here in Fort Lauderdale on May 30, at Revolution Live. Glenn took time out of his schedule to talk with us about Pop Psychology, coming out publicly, and his ideal guy! “Teenage Sounds” houses a particularly jarring line that sticks out: “I’m sick of being called a fag because I’m queer.” Ironically, that song was penned before you came out. Do you still hear a lot of f-bombs now that you’re out? Yeah, I still hear it [when] I’m walking down the street in my small town (Provo, Utah) from someone driving by. The line originally referred to being called a “fag” for the way you look, the way you look, the way you dance. Obviously I was also referring to my sexuality...No one really latched on to [the lyric] really. It was interesting. What was it like coming out to Rolling Stones? Also, how did that come about? I asked my publicist [how I could] come out in a way that wasn’t tweeting. I wanted to do it where I could talk about what I thought, and talk about my point of view. So the magazine did this story, and gave me a lot of space to talk about it. In regards to your sexuality, you’ve said that writing the new album, Pop Psychology, was a cathartic experience for you. Did you attend any therapy sessions prior to writing the album as well? How was writing Pop Psychology different than previous albums? I did. I actually got a therapist. I went to her for six months before I started writing. I would say that the record was really inspired by a lot of the sessions. It’s not everyday you see a band made up of mostly Mormons. I’m curious...Do you guys have a good amount of Mormon fans? I think we do. On twitter I’ve heard from fans that are LDS (Latter Day Saint), especially since we’re from Utah. I don’t know if we’re a “Mormon band” though.

You were recently on Chelsea Lately. What was that like? I’ve been watching her show since it came out, so for me it was just a trip. I love her sense of humor, so it was just really fun to fire off with one another. It was cool. You might get this a lot but I have to ask: What does your ideal guy look like? I like bears [laughs]. I just like dudes that are guys, I guess? Like guy-guys? I’m not afraid of dudes whose faces maybe aren’t as handsome... Celebrity crush of the moment? It changes all the time. I mean, I liked Josh Brolin for a long time. He’s actually very handsome. I guess that would be the most current! Are you excited to be back in sunny South Florida? Florida has great fans. I like that you can stay in the same state but play like three or four different shows. It’s cool. We’re sure Tyler will have a blast down here. After all, we do have bears for days. Neon Trees will be playing at Revolution Live on May 30 at 8:30 p.m. For tickets and additional information, visit Revolution Live at jointherevolution.net.

THE WEEK

Memorial Day Weekend Tea Cruise, Michael Jackson, and Evita

____________________ Thursday

5/22

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

oHonduran-born comedian Carlos Mencia tackles topics as diverse as everyday hypocrisies, absurdities, ethnic stereotypes, race relations, immigration, war, patriotism, capitalism, pop culture, current events and family. Carlos is best known for his wellreceived Comedy Central show, Mind of Mencia. Despite some rather unfortunate public relations moments (including backlash after his inappropriate joke: “I’m glad Hurricane Katrina happened. It taught us black people can’t swim”), Mencia has maintained a successful career as a comedian. Tonight he performs popular material at the Palm Beach Improv. 8 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, 33401.

oThe classic novel and Academy award winning film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is given the stage treatment by local Andrew Living Arts Studio. Dale Wasserman’s adaptation of Ken Kesey’s breakthrough novel concerns the action of the residents at a “loony bin” in the 1960’s. The stern and vindictive Nurse Ratched is a camp-friendly nightmare, at odds with new patient “misfit” Randal McMurphy, who awakens both the staff and the other residents. Written in 1962 between the Korean and Vietnam War, the play reflects a time when poets, singers and artists united in opposition against social injustices. The play is also noteworthy for heralding Native American rights, symbolized by the mute Native American resident who finally speaks. 7:30 p.m. Andrews Living Arts Studio. 23 NW Fifth St, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Cirque du Soleil & Michael Jackson

Tattoos and Hot Dogs

The Mind of Mencia

____________________ ____________________ 5/24 Friday 5/23 Saturday oDespite Conrad Murray’s best efforts, Michael Jackson has remained “immortal”—at least metaphorically speaking. Cirque du Soleil’s tribute to the king of pop reinforces our culture’s renewed interest in Mr. Jackson (recently, he released a “new” single). This unique show combines Michael Jackson’s legendary music with the world-famous choreography of Cirque du Soleil. It features 49 international dancers, musicians, and acrobats— presented in rock concert format. Michael Jackson’s unparalleled music and Cirque du Soleil’s masterful performances make for an explosive and creative spectacular. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 2555 NW 136th Ave, Sunrise, 33323.

oThinking Cap Theatre is a non-profit, Fort Lauderdale-based theatre company devoted to presenting experimental, provocative, and sociallyconscious plays. Their newest play, “hot dog” (the lower caps on purpose), follows their dogma of presenting works that depict a range of identities more reflective of today’s society. Hot dog concerns the giving and receiving of care. Dog lives next door to her daughter Maryanne and son-in-law Michael. When Maryann tires of caring for the feisty and stubborn Dog, she fetches her sister Carol for help. The play is experimental, and absurdist, in the style of Edward Albee and Samuel Beckett. 8 p.m. NSU Gallery 217, Performing and Visual Arts Wing. 3301 College Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33314. Memorial Day Weekend Tea Cruise

A Memorial Day Concert

oThe May Fort Lauderdale Tea Cruise takes place on Memorial Day Weekend. In remembrance of all the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, dancers from Boardwalk and Johnny’s will entertain cruise-goers with booty shaking, possible twerking, and seductive dancing. Kitty Meow hosts and DJ Greyson Jubilee keeps the party spinning. An after party at Johnny’s (with no cover and $1.00 drinks) means that this event can last until the wee hours of the night. Of course, red, white and blue speedo attire is highly recommended. Boarding from 5-5:30 p.m. for the cruise, which concludes at 9 p.m. 540 SE 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

oSome of the best aspects of Memorial Day weekend include rousing patriotic hymns. A Souza anyone? What about different variations of The Star Spangled Banner? Mizner Park will be hosting a Memorial Day concert in honor of the fallen soldiers throughout America’s history. The Indian River Pops, Robert Sharon Chorale, and New Gardens Band play different orchestral music conducted by Owen Seward. 7 p.m. Mizner Park Amphitheater. 590 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 33432.

Everybody Drinks the Same Water o13th century Spain is hardly the focus of many plays, but with “Everybody Drinks the Same Water,” Miami Theater Center grapples with this intriguing setting. An all-local cast of veteran actors and newcomers perform in this murder mystery. The plot follows three teenagers of different faiths who decide to work together to figure out who poisoned the public water supply. Add to the mix inter-religious flirtations with potentially fatal consequences, and you get an engaging look at the past that also teaches a number of powerful lessons relating to the present. 10 a.m. Miami Theater Center. 9806 NE 2nd Ave, Miami Shores, 33138.

Evita

White Fort Lauderdale Deborah Cox will perform at The Manor on Sunday, May 25, 2014. If you’re a fan, be sure to get there as early as possible as this annual event will definitely sell out! See and be seen at this Memorial Day weekend White Party in Wilton Manors, and don’t forget to dress to impress. Red carpet starts at 10 p.m. The host is Elaine Lancaster, with performance by Kitty Meow. At The Manor: 2345 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. 954-626-0082. For more information, go to themanorcomplex.com

guymag.net

oBest known in the gay community for being the only watchable Madonna movie, Evita also started the career of another gay icon: Patti Lupone. The musical centers around the rags-to-riches story of Eva Peron—a once radio host turned First Lady. Famous in Argentina for her philanthropy, Evita died at an early age, solidifying her legacy as a saint to the Argentinian people. The Andrew Lloyd Weber penned music has become a cultural staple (Don’t Cry for me Argentina, High-Flying Adored). The musical has been performed often, with a recent popular revival on Broadway. Bring tissues for the melodramatic second act. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

TRAVEL

How to Eat Like a Local When Traveling by

Rick Karlin

o

When it comes to dining on vacation, travelers tend to fall into two categories; those that play it safe and familiar and those more adventurous folks who want to sample all the local delicacies. If you’re one of those people that likes safe and familiar, stop reading and go download the list of KFC stores worldwide. If you want a bit of adventure in your dining, read on. Spring rolls can be found in most Asian cuisines, but in Vietnam it is almost the official national dish. Try nem nuong cuon, grilled pork sausage wrapped in rice paper with lettuce, cucumber, carrot, daikon and mint, the most popular version (be sure to try the accompanying sauce, usually a house specialty). Chao tom cuon, switches out cold shrimp for the pork sausage. Both can usually be had at food carts as well as practically every restaurant in the country. They’re a favorite late night treat among locals. In the Balkans they may not agree on much, but cevapcici is a favorite that crosses all borders. Depending on where you are, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia or Montenegro, it may be made with pork, lamb, beef or a combination of the three. Ground meat is combined with onions and garlic, formed into sausages and then grilled, boiled or fried and served with bread, often home-baked, to make sandwiches. The condiment of choice is ajvar, a roasted red pepper and olive oil spread. Most Americans think of Italy when they order gnocchi. However, in Uruguay, the dish is so popular that the 29th of each month is known as “Dia de Noquis,” or Gnocchi Day. The custom derives

50

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

from the fact that at the end of the month money has often run out, and the combination of potatoes, flour and an egg makes for a budget-friendly dish. Many Uruguayan restaurants offer a variety of gnocchi dishes with the classic, noqui de papa, or potato gnocchi, being the favorite. Fancier versions are flavored with cheese, tomatoes, spinach or even seafood. By now, everyone has heard of tapas, the Spanish “small plates” menu. Meze (also spelled mezze), is the Middle East/Mediterranean take on the same idea. Depending on where you are, a meze platter could include labne (strained yogurt cheese), baba ghanoush (seasoned diced eggplant), muhammara (a hot pepper dip with breadcrumbs, garlic, salt, lemon juice and olive oil) or tabbouleh (bulgur, finely chopped parsley, mint, tomato, scallions, lemon juice and olive oil). Stuffed grape leaves, filled with rice or a combination of rice and lamb, are usually included in the platter. Eat it all with warm pita bread. The traditional Quebecois dish poutine is made with French fries, brown gravy and cheese curds. There have been bastardized versions popularized around the world; such as “disco fries” or even KFC’s mashed potato-version. Poutine is currently the trending dish in the restaurant industry and you’ll find versions including meat, caramelized onions and assorted vegetables. However, nothing beats the original and the key is fresh cheese curds (you know they’re fresh when they “squeak” when bitten) and homemade gravy. Chile is one of the world’s top avocado producguymagtube

ers, so it’s no wonder that its national dish, the completo, features avocado. Start with a hefty bun holding a jumbo hot dog (size queens rejoice, it’s twice the size of an American hot dog) pile on avocado, tomatoes, sauerkraut, mayonnaise, chili, sauce and cheese. It’s a messy dish, served with plenty of napkins. If the sugar-coated, crispy pastry deliciousness of a Spanish churro doesn’t give you enough of a sugar rush, try dunking the fried dough into a steaming cup of thick hot chocolate as they do in Spain. Forget Wheaties, this is the breakfast of champions. Saag paneer, spicy creamed spinach with chunks of cheese served with a side of warm naan (a pita-like bread) is an Indian favorite. Paneer is a unique non-melting cheese that might be mistaken for tofu (which is sometimes substituted to make this a vegan dish). Peru’s favorite dessert, queso helado, translates literally as “cheese ice cream.” While that sounds delish, there’s actually no cheese in the dish. The name stems from its traditional preparation, which makes the dish look more like sliced cheese than a scoop of ice cream. It is a sort of cinnamon flavored frozen rice pudding made from sweetened condensed milk, often with a touch of coconut. Try it from any of the push-carts or local shops. In Morocco make certain to end your meal with ktefa; crispy pastry layered with sweetened

guymag.net

almonds and creme anglaise, a custard-like sauce. Some find that the scented orange flower waterbased syrup makes it smell a little soapy. If you’re going to be trying all these local dishes, it’s best to follow a few simple rules to avoid problems. Be sure your dish is served hot, and take a look at the restaurant, cart or kiosk before ordering. Does it look clean and well kept? Is it busy? If so, the food will not be stored as long. Remember that you can contaminate your food as easily as the food vendor. Wash your hands before you eat, especially if you’ve been shopping and handling merchandise or money. Keep in mind that you must use “safe” water to wash. Finally, if you have special food restrictions, such as allergies or are a vegetarian, and are traveling in a non-English-speaking country, it’s a good idea to have a phrasebook on hand to help translate the menu. Before you go on your trip, go on-line to Google Translator and type in phrases you might need, such as; “Does this dish have nuts?” or “What kind of meat is in this?” Don’t ask, “Does this dish have meat in it?” Definitions of meat vary widely. Even in the U.S. my vegetarian husband was once served a dish with lamb, even after he told the chef that he didn’t eat meat. Bring PeptoBismol tablets with you just “in case” and, of course, those with compromised immune systems should avoid potentially risky dishes.

Look As Young As You Feel

by Tom

Bonanti

o

You may not be old enough to require a walker, dentures, or Viagra. But like it or not, we are all aging, some of us faster than others. Growing older doesn’t have to be fraught with drama, melt downs and bad plastic surgeries. Why not take some healthy, safe precautions to preserve your youth as you grow older, gracefully and beautifully? Relax! Follow these tips and be as young as you feel! Have you noticed more aches and pains than you used to, especially after waking in the morning or after a grueling workout? That’s because the cartilage in your joints wears thinner with age. Remedy this with stretching. Try bringing your knees to your chest and stretch your low back before you get out of bed in the AM. Stretch before cardio sessions and during and after weight training sessions. Make stretching a crucial part of your day and every work-out and preserve those joints. Birthdays aren’t just for cake and cheap sentiment. They’re all about finding new wrinkles. Don’t have the cash for a plastic lift or tuck? Don’t want to be another botched Botox casualty? Try a surface skin procedure – either microdermabrasion or a facial peel to reduce and eliminate wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is like a facial massage with grains of sand lightly abrading your skin and bringing about a fresh new look. A peel is a lotion applied to your skin which dries and is peeled off. Make sure these procedures are done under medi-

guymag.net

cal supervision or by a qualified esthetician. Don’t forget to moisturize every AM and PM. Ever get embarrassed because you can’t remember the name of the dude across the table from you at a business meeting? You’re probably not senile, yet. You’re just overly bombarded by stimulicomputers, iPods, iPhones, Blackberries, etc. Learn to focus on one thing at a time. Learn some easy memory techniques, use visual cues and leave multi-tasking to the nitwits who can’t do any one thing well in the first place. Crossword puzzles and playing bridge are also wonderful brain work outs Make sure to get enough sleep – a solid uninterrupted 8-9 hours per night. Midday naps are OK, just don’t doze more than 20 minutes or you will end up groggy and not refreshed. Avoid alcohol in the evening and don’t eat within three hours of bedtime. Exercise is the greatest way to fight age and improve the quality of your life. It burns fat, keeps cholesterol and blood pressure in check, revs up your metabolism and gives you a healthy heart. Besides these perks, working out will give you dynamite abs, bulging biceps and a firm butt. Need any further impetus to hit the gym? Yeah, the clock is ticking, but no need for you to sweat! Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com for more anti-aging wisdom. Why not set up a free intake with Tom (at (954) 557-1119)? Check out my gym and massage studio at www.pumpnincgym.com !
