MUSIC

Killing You Softly Perfume Genius on the Perfect Manicure, His Tupac Sponge-Bath Fantasy and Being ‘Weirdly Liberated’ by

Chris AzzopArdi

Hadreas is o Mike tapping his “really

long” nails on a table. “Can you hear that?” he asks. The act seems insignificant, but for the Seattle-based musician – better known as Perfume Genius – it’s a rite of passage. That tap, tap encapsulates independence, bravery and rebelliousness – all facets of his confrontational third album Too Bright, where Hadreas redefines his musical genius to reflect a revelatory breakthrough. Are you trying to make a statement with your androgynous look? Originally it wasn’t a protest-y thing – I was just allowing myself to do whatever the hell I wanted. When I wear women’s clothes and makeup, to me I’m not dressing like a woman. I’m just doing whatever I want to do! I feel like I was being more myself when I did that, not more like a woman. When I first allowed myself to do that, I went nuts and I was wearing tons of

costume jewelry and paisley maxi skirts all the time. I really went for it! (Laughs) It’s kind of evened out now. I have my nails done. I’ve figured out where I naturally want to be. You know when women tap their nails on the table? Growing up I was like, “That is the bomb!” I wanted to do that. Now I can. One time before a show in Chicago I actually got acrylic nails and I wanted them long, but when I got up on stage I couldn’t play my guitar. It was really embarrassing! (Laughs) How intentional are you being with your subversion of gender norms? As much as it is just me being myself, I know it is a defiant act to leave the house or make a video with these things in them, and so there are times when I exaggerate it. I push it a bit just because that’s what I like to do. It’s important to me. I like that when I play shows boys wear crazy outfits because they feel like they can. It’s super, super heartwarming. I mean, it’s a really corny feeling, but if I’m ever kind of contented for a moment or feel like I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to, it’s when I’m doing things like that. Is Too Bright a response to the fact that some people have pigeonholed you as a downer? (Laughs) I guess. A lot of people call my albums “depressing,” and I don’t feel that way. I think that some of the songs are very sad, but that’s very different than depression to me. I’ve been depressed in my life, and I didn’t do anything. I couldn’t even bother to microwave a burrito let alone write a song! (Laughs) Some people mistake patience or compassion for wimpy things when they’re some of the toughest and strongest modes you can be in. Maybe I was a tiny bit of resentful of that (for this album). You know, people qualify me as a “gay musician” right away. I have interviews in France, and they’ll do the introduction on the radio and they’re like, “His name is Mike Hadreas. He’s very depressed. He’s very gay.” Because of that, people told me before I made this album that maybe I should tone it down or talk about less share with us on guymag.net

“You can lie to yourself and things wax and wane, so I never really feel like I’m in the right spot to perform. I never feel like I’m 100 percent ready, but I know that’s a lie.” explicitly gay themes. I did the opposite. People think that because I’m tiny or because I’m wearing a lot of silk that I can’t hurt you, but I can. I’m just as capable of murder as everybody else. How much of Too Bright is a representation of you currently? Is this how you want to perceive yourself? Yeah, hopefully. I mean, a lot of it is how I’m feeling now, and a lot of it is about how I hope to feel. I guess the first two albums were all about me processing and thinking about what had already happened, but I didn’t feel like it was important to do that anymore – to look back. This album is very confident and sort of confrontational, and I have some of that in me, but the music is almost more that than how I am. Some of it’s a projection. How did you get into that mindset for Too Bright? (Long pause) I did a lot of things for many years that sort of … it made me lost. I just wasn’t really present or paying attention or recognizing what was actually going on with me or outside of me. Then, when I got sober, there were a lot of really big problems that needed to heal and that I needed to figure out. Now, I’ve been healthy long enough that those big issues have sort of gone, and I’m just kind of left with myself for the first time as an adult. I’ve been thinking about things that I theguymag

theguymag

guymagtube

29

MUSIC never really thought about, like my place in the world and how I want to feel. You know, it was just a very complicated and weird thing, and I guess this is sort of a therapeutic figuring out. How long have you been sober? And how long have you felt like a grown up? Well, I don’t feel like a grown up yet. (Laughs) But I’ve been sober for four years. On the album, you express feelings of anger, empowerment and defiance. How have they manifested within you? Is that part of the recovery process? It’s partly that. But a lot of it is... I don’t know. (Long pause) I mean, growing up people would give me shit in class or on the street and it would magnify this otherness that I feel. Originally I would be ashamed at myself or feel like something was wrong with me, and I also just felt very victimized. Parallel to that is this resentment and anger about the whole thing. When I got older, that whole victim-y outlook was not working for me anymore. I mean, it never did, but it’s very clear to me that that was not helpful, so I wanted to deal with these things and think about them in a more defiant and badass way, I guess. That’s how I feel and that’s how I want to feel, and I thought it would helpful for others to hear it put that way. I remember being bullied and then growing up to feel victimized by the whole world. Then, you get to a point where you say, “Fuck everybody.” I mean, not everybody – not the good people. But it feels like everybody. That’s how it gets twisted, and that’s how it got twisted for me. Even though I would be in situations a lot where probably nobody was gonna pick on me or nobody was gonna say shit, I still carried myself as if they were going to. I have a guard up all the time just in case, and I’m very resentful and pissed off about that. I don’t feel like doing it anymore. When you shot the video for “Queen,” the first single from this album, what

did it feel like to get on top of that conference table looking all lesbian chic in front of a group of presumably heterosexual men? Was it cathartic? It was. That was my main idea, you know what I mean? Doing it, I was a little timid at first, but then I was like, “Fuck y’all. I’m gonna give it to you.” What kind of kid were you? I was just a little weirdo. On top of being feminine, I’m a very tiny person. I’m also weird – like a Gollum lady-like creature. But, you know, creatively I’m strange. I’m proud of that, though. I don’t think of that as a negative thing. I felt strange, too, when I was a kid, so I tried to counterbalance that by doing “normal” kid things, like playing soccer. Have you always been proud of your weirdness? I guess I worried about it and was very self-conscious and thought a lot about how I carried myself, but never to the point where I really changed all that much. (Laughs) I was getting shit, but I rarely if ever did it differently. I mean, I don’t think I could’ve even played soccer even if I felt like it. But maybe. I was on the wrestling team until my sophomore year in high school. I would’ve kept doing it except I came out when I was 15 and didn’t think I could stay on the wrestling team, which is a shame – there’s nothing really sexual about it. If anything, it’s the opposite. At what point in your life did you feel empowered as a gay man – not just identity-wise, but sexually too? Oh god. When I was writing this album, there were times where I was actually giggling afterward because I was going for it so much with some of the things I was saying. I actually surprised myself by how swagger-y and middle finger-y I was being about things. I was very insecure my whole life, so when I just do shit anyway is when I feel empowered. I’m still nervous and I still get that frightened feeling a lot, but I just do everything anyway now. Do you remember when you first felt sexually liberated? theguymag

Perfume Genius in 2010 (Photo by Angel Ceballos)

When it happened for me was (during the music video for Tupac’s “I Get Around”) where these girls are sponge-bathing Tupac. I originally went in thinking I wanted to get in the bath, but then I started to realize that I wanted to bathe Tupac. I wanted to sponge Tupac! Then I was like, “You know what, let’s just be real.” How does somebody who’s naturally nervous like you get on stage and perform? You just do it. I commit to everything. I also realized that how I’m feeling is not real a lot of the times. You can lie to yourself and things wax and wane, so I never really feel like I’m in the right spot to perform. I never feel like I’m 100 percent ready, but I know that’s a lie.

I know. It’s just that I’ve noticed now as I’m doing interviews that I kind of have to be pretentious. There’s no way getting around it. I’m sort of embarrassed to ... (long pause) To talk about yourself? Yeah. Which song on Too Bright do you feel closest to? “My Body.” It’s not an uplifting song, but I can always get in the right mood for it.

How important is it to you that people connect to your music on an emotional level? I like the idea of singing songs about things that people might feel lonely in. Maybe I’m giving myself too much credit, but that’s at least my intention.

What do you mean by “the right mood”? The song is about body image issues and feelings of just feeling icky – of just being an “icky” person. Icky physically. Just icky in general. But during the song I’m almost yelling at people. There’s no apologizing or feeling bad for myself. It’s almost like an exorcism; there’s something very cathartic about it. Telling these secrets about myself in a really big way to people is weirdly liberating.

I think your music is capable of that. I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t think there was truth to that.

TRAVEL

Euro-Fun By Rick kaRlin

o

Vacationing in Europe has always been popular with the GLBT community. In the past, we have been drawn by many countries’ more enlightened views on sexuality (or at least the appearance of such) as much as for the culture and history. Europe is still the world’s top tourist destination. Millions of the GLBT community flock to its cities, beaches and countryside. Each part of Europe is renowned for some aspect of its culture and entertainment. Paris is known as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Berlin for its edgier nightlife, Amsterdam for sexual freedom (and its marijuana shops,) Rome for culture and history, and of course, resort islands such as Ibiza and Mykonos for sunshine, beautiful waters and hedonism. While those destinations are all wonderful, many travelers seek less obvious locales. Carlos Kytka, executive director of the Gay European Tourism Association, offers the following suggestions for those seeking new destinations to explore. The Mediterranean seaside village of Sitges, just 20 miles from Barcelona, should be high on your list. It was home to Spain’s first gay disco back in the 80s, and has played host to artists for more than a century. Miro, Dali Picasso, Tennessee Williams and Douglas Fairbanks all vacationed there. The main streets are packed with gay bars and clubs that allow you to party all night and spend your days relaxing on the beautiful gay beach right in the center of the seafront. You’ll be able to walk to the clubs, restaurants and beaches as everything is centrally located. If you feel the need for some big city excitement, take a day trip to Barcelona, just a 20-minute train ride away. Visit during Gay Pride, June 18 - 22 in 2015, when Sitges welcomes over 100,000 visitors in one of Spain’s most charming pride celebrations. Or plan on visiting next September for Bear Week or “Duckie” an annual event that combines theatre, art, dance and pop music and for events that takes over the area’s clubs.

Sitges (photo by karamysh)

Seafront hotels such as the Calipolis (Avenida Sofía, 2-6, 34 938 941 500, specify sea-view rooms) and Platjador (Paseo de la Ribera, 35, 866-332-3590) are among the most popular places for the GLBT community to stay. Parrots Gay Hotel (Carrer de Joan Tarrida, 16, 34-938-94-13-50) is located in the heart of Sitges, has a restaurant, sidewalk café and a bathhouse and it’s located right in the heart of the action. If you’re on a budget, Hotel Alexandra (Carrer Termes 20, 34-938-94-15-58) is a one-star hotel, just a three-minute walk from the seafront. It’s air conditioned and clean and runs about 43¤ a night. theguymag

Antwerp, Belgium is known for diamonds and chocolate, but also has a strong GLBT community. Antwerp is the second biggest town in Belgium, located up north in the Flanders region. Because it’s a seaport, it was the richest and most significant commercial town in Europe during the 16th century and home to such artists as Rubens and van Dyck. More recently, it has become a fashion center, home to many avant-garde designers. Where there’s fashion, there’s a gay community. Combining the two are the “Extravaganza,” a circuit costume party, and the Antwerp Fashion Festival, both in September. In October, “Studio 54 Sportpaleis” claims to be the bigshare with us on guymag.net

gest disco party on earth. LeatherPride 2015, February 11-16, is the city’s annual leather & fetish weekend, including the Mr. Leather Belgium contest. All of the major hotel chains have outposts in Antwerp, but if you’re looking for something more individual, check out Leonardo Hotel (De Keyserlei 59, 32-3-232-14-43), a nice basic hotel close to the central railway station or Hotel Matelote (Haarstraat 11, +32-3-20188-00), a boutique hotel in the center of town. Next week, we look at a few more European destinations to consider for the road less traveled. theguymag

Fifty Shades of Gray Quilt Exhibit o Even if the title of this exhibit may elicit some chuckles, there’s nothing funny about the craftsmanship that goes into making a fine quilt. Tongue-in-cheek dirty book reference aside, the Fifty Shades of Gray Quilt Exhibit will feature over 125 handmade quilts exhibited by the Gold Coast Quilters Guild. The guild was started in 1985 by a group of 19 women. Since then, it has grown to a membership of over 200, focusing their efforts on both quilting and servicing the community. This exhibit is a preview of a larger exhibit to be unveiled in January. 12:00 p.m. South County Civic Center. 16700 Jog Road. Delray Beach. 33446.

New Found Glory o Recent One Direction single “Steal My Girl” sounds very similar to New Found Glory’s punk-pop classic “It’s Not Your Fault.” It’s no wonder the producers of that single would rip-off New Found Glory—the band has been creating radio-friendly pop punk for almost two decades. Formed in Coral Springs in the late 1990s, New Found Glory garnered a cult following and critical acclaim with such albums as Nothing Gold Can Stay and From the Screen to Your Stereo. Hit singles have included “My Friends Over You,” “Head on Collision,” and “All Downhill from Here.” 6:30 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW Third Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

David Morin – Elvis Impersonator

o Down in Front Theater presents this funny yet touching story of three Jewish widows who meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves. When one of the widows, Ida, meets Sam at the cemetery, she decides that she’s ready to begin a new life with a new man. Unfortunately, priggish and judgmental Doris meddles into this new romance. The 1990 play was turned into a film starring Olympia Dukakis, Ellen Burstyn, and Dianne Ladd. 2:00 p.m. Sunrise Civic Center Theatre. 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd. Sunrise. 33351.

Pink Bra Auction o October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to bring awareness to this terrible disease. Boardwalk Bar will be contributing to the campaign by hosting a pink bra auction to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure non-profit organization. Members of the community are asked to “bling” a pink bra. They will then model these bras during a hilarious auction. Interested philanthropists can also contribute other items to the raffle and auction. Kitty Meow, Nikki Adams, Diva of Lips, and Miss Kitty will host the event. 7:00 p.m. Boardwalk 1721 N. Andrews Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33311.

o David Morin’s dream of recreating Elvis Presley’s persona started when he was just a young boy living on the French island of Martinique. When he was nine years old, his dream came true—he moved to America and was finally in the land of Elvis. He studied Mr. Presley’s moves and voice. In 2007, he began his transformation and became one of the most sought-after Elvis impersonators in South Florida. He will be performing tonight at the Pavilion Grille in Boca Raton. 7:30 p.m. Pavilion Grille. 301 Yamato Road. Boca Raton. 33431.

Don’t Let Work Beat You Down! by Tom

FITNESS

bonanTi

o

A good workout can leave you mighty sore, but in the end, most will agree that the feelings of accomplishment and exhilaration are well worth it! You might say that the stress that you impose upon yourself in the gym is positive, because it builds you up. Yet there’s another type of stress, the kind that beats you down, and you know where I’m going here. Ironically it’s not time in the gym that most often leaves you with a stiff neck, lower back pain, headaches and sore wrists. A typical day at work can leave you sorer than any other modern reality. Many guys complain of a stiff neck and sore shoulders by quitting time. The reality is that your head weighs 10 to 12 pounds and supporting that weight for hours on end is bound to strain your neck and shoulders. Here’s what you can do. Adjust the back of your chair so that it supports your spine, and scoot your butt as far back as possible. Sit up, straighten your shoulders, pull your chin back and that will keep your head and spine in line. Keep essentials close by. Straining and scrambling to reach your “stuff” can cause shoulder soreness and even rotator cuff tears. Phones, fax machines and keyboards should be within convenient reach for you. Don’t type while you’re on the phone. Flexing your head against your shoulder to hold the phone pinches the primary blood flow to the arm and the brain. The best fix here is to use a headset. But if it’s not in your budget, when the phone rings, pretend that it is 1968 and take notes with a pen and paper. This will give your wrists and fingers a break from the keyboard. Try setting your computer screen a little lower. Your neck was built to bend slightly downward. Keep your monitor low enough by placing it on the desktop, not on top of the computers central unit or other type of riser. Many guys suffer with low back pain. Sitting at work for hours may take the load off your feet, but it increases the pressure on your spine by 30%. Here’s what you can do.

share with us on guymag.net

First, never stay in one position too long. Move around. Constantly changing position helps the disks in your spine retain more fluid and that keeps your back more pliable. Second, loosen your ham strings. Prolonged sitting can tighten your hamstrings which can strain the muscles of your lower back. Here is a stretch you can do. Sit on the floor with your left leg extended in front of you, and bend the right leg so your right foot touches your right knee (Your legs will form a figure four). Gently bend forward at your waist to stretch your left hamstring and hold the stretch for ten seconds. Repeat this stretch with your other leg. Stretch daily. Third, ditch the cheap chair. An office chair should have an adjustable height and a tilting back rest. Adjusting the chair is simple. You should be able to keep your spine straight and your knees and elbows bent at 90 degrees as you rest your feet flat on the floor. Don’t let a long day at work beat you down. Take a few of these measures at the office. You will be more productive at work and in the gym. For more pointers on good work ergonomics contact trainertomb@aol.com.
