Comedian Margaret Cho—Grammynominated for Best Comedy Album for “Cho Dependent: Live in Concert”—is constantly evolving, both professionally and personally. The San Francisco-born performer branched out from comedy into acting, activism, burlesque, and—with “Cho Dependent,” released in 2011—a bona fide singer/songwriter. Openly bisexual, Cho has said that she is drawn to men, women, and transgendered persons. A longtime, outspoken, and passionate

COVER advocate for LGBT rights, Cho is known and loved for the way she embraces the gay community and includes it in her stand-up material. The entertainer, who is embarking on her latest comedy tour, entitled “Mother,” will be performing at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on January 27. She spoke exclusively with Guy Magazine. What would it mean to you to win a Grammy Award? It would be great. I really love [“Cho Dependent”]. It’s something that I’ve wanted for a long time. It would be great to actually win it. Speaking of awards, what did you think of Jodie Foster’s speech at the Golden Globes? I think it’s wonderful that she came out. It was very emotional. It was also strange, too, with [her remarks about] Mel Gibson. You wouldn’t think that they would be friendly, but they’re very close. I think it’s really cool that she’s out. I commend her bravery. I think people forget how big of a symbol she was in tabloid culture [with] John Hinckley and all that stuff: She was considered the catalyst for somebody trying to assassinate a president. It was the beginning of the insanity regarding celebrities and stalking. She was the first person in the public eye to experience that and probably got a lot of baggage from that. She doesn’t want to have people spying on her life in that way. I get it, I understand.

COVER The tagline for your new stand-up tour, “Mother,” is “Nothing is sacred: Least of all this.” I think that motherhood is considered a sacred thing. But a mother has to have sex in order to be a mother. You have to have sex quite a lot of times, actually, in order to get it to work. Being maternal doesn’t necessarily mean being holy, being sacred. I’m not a mother myself, but there are a lot of people who relate to me as a maternal figure. I think that makes me a mother of the world by default. The show is also about my mother, which is a popular thing in my work over the years. How do you think your mother really feels about being a part of your act? I think she loves the feeling of being included, in feeling like she’s being seen and heard, that her words and presence have a lot of value to me. I’ve been making fun of my mom since I was a really young kid. It was clear I was going to do that when I became a comedian. As a ‘dog person,’ do your dogs fulfill the mother/child relationship for you? Oh, yes! It is a very enriching thing, a very powerful thing. I think animals and people
are meant to cohabitate. I think it’s a valuable relationship. I don’t think it competes with the mother and child dynamic, but it’s certainly something that satisfies a very important need. My animals are very important to me. What is the worst advice your mother ever gave you? To pluck above my eyebrow line; she does that.

THE SCENE
D.I.L.F.s, Dapur, Paradise, and Post-Nuptials By Alex Vaughn
o
There was wonderful wine and hors d’oeuvres at the LGBT Visitors Center of Miami Beach last week for the Met Life-sponsored mixer, Surviving the Fiscal Cliff. Sue Perez of Morgan Stanley was the special guest, and imparted invaluable info to gay individuals and families on ways to protect themselves and their assets in the unique financial conditions today. The event was as engaging as was the backdrop of the Magic City of Miami. On Saturday, Boom celebrated its 12th anniversary with a party that rocked the house. DJ Brian Reyes kept the action on the dance floor (well, some of it), and on her game was incomparable house diva Latrice Royal. It was the perfect night to celebrate one of the Drive’s mainstay institutions (and $1 well drinks didn’t hurt either). From Boom, it was off to something totally different, and incredibly hot, just a skip across the Drive to Bill’s Filling Station for the first ever D.I.L.F. party. The $5 cover also bought you entry into a prize drawing. It was everything promised: hot music, flowing libations, wall-to-wall daddies, the aroma of leather, and a total relaxation of inhibitions. Bill’s was packed with hot men of all shapes and sizes, and there was an incredible, sexually-driven, dark and mysteriously-charged atmosphere, enhanced by the smoke machine and fantastic music. If that wasn’t enough to raise your temperature, DJ Herbie James spun the tunes as the guests watched hot boys—erotically bound to the pool table—tantalized in the most innocent yet depraved ways. Nothing shown, nothing done, but minds running wild—it’s the kind of electricity that can only be created through depriving rather than satisfying. The next D.I.L.F. party will be held on February 9, with a cash prize drawing for $1,000. It’s already being called the “new event on the Drive,” and props and accolades to organizer (and Georgie’s Alibi bartender) Ron Cox. On Wednesday, Dapur hosted “Dining with
DJ Herbie James Pride,” with a portion of the proceeds from both lunch and dinner being donated to the Pride Center. The event attracted many local mentionables, including Joe Guerrero, Jim Walker, Drew Miller, Kevin Murdoch, Irwin Ducker, Chris Caputo, and Robert Boo. Congratulations to Terry De Carlo and William Huelsman, who held the reception for their wedding (which took place last month in New York) at Richardson Historic Park and Manor House in Wilton Manors, with a delicious repast by Alibi Catering. There was a huge outpouring of love for the happy power couple, with guests including Jackson Padgett, Chris Caputo, Mark Martin, Rob Angle, Terry Behal, Ryan Cranshaw, Drew Miller, Kevin Murdoch, and Victor Zepka, all present to celebrate the post-nuptials. The sight of “winter wear” on the Drive was overdue, with the light rains bringing in the 60-degree temps on Friday and Saturday, which made the Pride Center fundraiser, “An Evening in Paradise” at Richardson Historic Park and Manor House even more special. We’ll have all the details on that memorable event, next week in THE SCENE. Ciao!

Margaret Cho, Full Moon Magic, and Studio 54 Goes “Boom” The Week 1/23 to 1/29/2013 By Grant James
Wednesday,
Music and Caviar and Russian Bears (Oh My!)
1/23
Grass at the Movies The free SoundScape Cinema Series is a monthly event at the Miami Beach SoundScape ExoStage, at the corner of 17th Street and Washington Avenue. Bring a blanket or chairs, a picnic basket, and whatever other legal amenities you care to carry. (No more smuggling in candy and sodas underneath a suspicious coat in 90 degree weather!) Relive some classic film memories, with such 70s, 80s, and 90s fare as “Ghost,” “E.T.,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and “Ghostbusters,” to name a few. This month’s selection doesn’t exactly disappoint either: “Jurassic Park.” (Did you ever get a close look at Jeff Goldblum’s 90s bod? Yum.) At 8 p.m.—SHARP!—at 17th and Washington Ave., Miami Beach.
Dome Restaurant and Lounge present a night of music, caviar, champagne, and dining. Hosted by writer Ily Goyanes, and featuring art by Desiree Kawass, and music by DJ Maximus 3000, this is one bougie affair you need to attend. At 8 p.m., in The Dome (271 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables).

Three Excitable Sisters From the lyrics to “I’m So Excited:” “We’re goin’ for those pleasures in the night/I want to love you, feel you, wrap myself around you/I want to squeeze you, please you, I just can’t get enough/And if you move real slow I let it go/I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it.” Just what did these chicks think they were singing about? Pointer Sisters Anita and Ruth (sibs Bonnie and Issa left a long while back) bring their bouncy, Pop/Disco/R&B/ Jazz sound and a song list that is sure to make you so excited (and you just can’t hide it). See the three siblings perform their versatile songs that range from pop and disco to r&b and jazz. At 8 p.m., at the Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood).

For one magical weekend, Boom on the Drive brings back the energy and excitement of New York City’s Studio 54. With $1 drinks from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., no cover, and original Studio 54 bartender Sal DiFalco slinging drinks and dirt about Steve Rubell, Andy Warhol, Donna Ross, Monti Rock III, and the 70s scene that made Disco. Fire up the smoke machine and put on your boogie shoes. At 10 p.m., at Boom (2232 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors).
Endless Spam This hilarious musical comedy production is described as “lovingly ripped off from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” “Monty Python’s Spamalot” tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they set out on a quest to find the Holy Grail, while Frenchmen threaten to waive their “private parts in your general direction.” (Go on.) At 8 p.m., in the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5 Ave., Fort Lauderdale).

Maestro, Please Johnny Maestro may be gone, but his dream of keeping his doo-wop group The Brooklyn Bridge intact after he was gone is alive and well (and so, we think, is the band; take that, Sha-Na-Na). Bestknown for their Billboard Hot 100 hit “The Worst That Could Happen,” the group joins JT Carter, and other performers for a solid “Memories of Gold Evening,” including the first South Florida performance in years for The Del Satins, The Brooklyn Bridge’s first appearance since the loss beloved front man Maestro. At 7 p.m., in the FAU Auditorium (777 Glades Road, Boca Raton).
Finally: A Night at the Opera Get your aria on with “Great Opera Moments” presented by the Opera Atelier. Featuring scenes from well-known operas, including: the Quintet from “The Magic Flute,” a comical duet from “Le Nozze di Figaro,” The Third Act Trio and scene from “La Favorita,” the Third Act from “La Bohème,” and The Mad Scene from “Lucia di Lammermoor.” If none of those ring a bell, shame on you. Culture it up! At 3 p.m., in the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center (3385 NE 188 St., Aventura).
“Ladies and Germs:” Howie Mandel (1/28)
Howie Mandel: Laughs, Tears, and Mysophobia. Howie Mandel is famous for his fear of germs (or mysophobia). He keeps it real by—instead of shaking hands—fist pounding everyone he meets (hip, no?). See the comedian and host of “America’s Got Talent” up close as he makes you squeal with laughter. Dewal, or no deal? At 8 p.m., at Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood).

Murder—from Beyond the Grave! Agatha Christie’s complete bibliography is even longer than Lindsay Lohan’s lines. The murder mystery author (called the “Duchess of Death” by bestselling author Richard Hack) penned so many stories, that a few short story collections were released posthumously in the 1990’s. Selling novels from beyond the grave? Even Elvis didn’t do that, hound dog. Four of Christie’s BBC Radio stories have been “rediscovered” and adapted for the stage. The Xtreme Eating Awards Too Much of a Good Thing
By Richard David Chamberlain
o
Leave it to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) to turn the spotlight on our favorite menu item at Cheesecake Factory (600 E Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-463-1999) and make us feel guilty for even considering ordering the Bistro Shrimp Pasta ($17.95). Just remembering sitting down to the bowl of beer battered shrimp with its fresh mushrooms, chopped tomatoes and arugula served over spaghettini with a basil, garlic and lemon cream sauce has us wanting to phone in a reservation. Unfortunately, the Bistro Shrimp Pasta made the top of the CSPI’s Xtreme Eating Awards, the annual list of no-nos served in chain restaurants around the country to highlight the meals with the highest amount of saturated fats, calories, plus salt and sugar. Okay, okay. Just the fact that this dish tastes so doggone good should have been our first clue that it had “bad boy” written all over it. But who could have guessed that hiding beneath those delicious noodles with crispy shrimp was 3,120 calories, 1090 milligrams of sodium, and—hold on to your calculators—89 grams of saturated fat! (Sigh.) For those trying to limit themselves to a 2,000 calorie a day diet, this one dish has a day-and-a-half worth of food and three-times your daily recommended maximum of saturated fat. (That’s the one that is solid at room temp and increases cholesterol to plug up the tubing.) And as if that wasn’t enough to give us an instant heart attack, didn’t the CSPI slap us across the other cheek by including a second fave on its list of dis-honorees. To think that the Crispy Chicken Costelleta ($16.95) weighed in with 2,610 calories. It’s three little pieces of chicken, for crying out loud, served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. There is sits looking so innocent (and delicious), without a single clue that there are more calories on the plate than
an entire 12-piece bucket of Original Recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken. And as if to seal the deal, the CSPI adds that the dish also has fourand-a-half days worth of saturated fat—twice as many as the KFC bucketful. Staring in disbelief, we were not happy. In consolation, we were about to reach for a smoothie, when—no, wait—say it isn’t so. There on the list was our beloved Smoothie King (1135 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-306-8065). This is where we draw the line. We knew that our 40-ounce Peanut Power Plus Grape was large. It should be for $8.99. But it’s from Smoothie King, after all, whose slogan is “Be good to yourself.” Who knew that lurking behind all the goodness in our large cup of peanut butter, banana, and grape juice smoothie were 1,460 calories, and sixand-a-half days worth of sugar—39 teaspoons worth? That’s as much as in 20 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups! And don’t even get us started on IHOP (1241 South Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale, 954779-7599), our first choice for breakfast. Neither Paula Deen nor we have any problem downing their Country Fried Steak & Eggs ($9.29), or, at least, we didn’t until we discovered that it’s got 1,760 calories, 23 grams of saturated fat, 3,720 mg of sodium, and 11 teaspoons of added sugar. Translation: You could eat five McDonald’s Egg McMuffins sprinkled with 10 packets of sugar, and almost equal that count. Now each of these fooderies has an assortment of choices, and the moral always is to let common sense be your guide. And if you must, go ahead and cheat. Just tell them Guy Magazine said it’s okay.

2013: Your Best Year Ever! By Tom Bonanti
o
With 2013 well under way, it is time to light a fire in your belly and make those New Year’s resolutions into a reality, especially when it comes to your health and fitness goals. Look better, feel great, and be well this year, and stop making excuses and putting things off until tomorrow. Seize the day and make this a banner year for your workouts. Include these simple but proven strategies in your regimen and you are sure to see and feel the difference (and so will everyone else). Make time to warm up. Warmed up muscles and joints are more flexible and less prone to injury than muscles at rest. Try a light jog around the gym parking lot, or five to 10 minutes of light-to-moderate pedaling on a recumbent bike before you begin lifting. Warming up will also speed up your metabolism and help you burn a few more calories during your weight training routine. Stretching is important. After warming up, stretch briefly before your workout to maximize flexibility. Stretch the muscle group you are working between sets and exercises to prevent strains and sprains. Greater flexibility prevents you from becoming stiff and muscle-bound. Pyramid your weights. As a rule, three-to-four sets of eight-to-12 reps of each exercise is great for bodybuilding and overall strength training. But be sure to begin with a lighter weight for your initial set. Increase weight gradually. When trying something new, always use light weights so that you can develop proper form before slowly moving on to heavier loads. Muscles need to be challenged in order to grow bigger and stronger. Take your time. Go through the full range of motion for each exercise. Maintain a slower, more regular pace as you lift, keep control, and breathe regularly without holding your breath. For example, while performing a standing dumbbell curl for biceps, make sure to supinate the forearm
and flex the elbow as you lift the weight from the starting position at your side to your chin. Inhale as you lift the dumbbell and exhale as you lower it with each rep. Vary your routine. Doing the same things every time you workout is a recipe for burn out and boredom. Change your workouts every two to three months. Set ambitious but realistic goals each time and then dedicate yourself to achieving them. You may want to take an inch off your middle by Spring or increase your bench press by 10 percent by the end of the year. Be open to learning new exercises. Hire a certified personal trainer for a few sessions to jump-start your workouts. Rest properly. Each muscle group you train should have approximately two days rest before being worked out again. Muscle fibers recover and grow not when you’re breaking them down in the gym, but when you allow them proper rest. Make every moment of your gym time count. Maximize your gains. Minimize your frustrations. Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com for more great suggestions and ideas.

TRAVEL
Prague Eastern Europe’s Gay Mecca By Robert Elias Deaton
o
Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, and the gay center of Eastern Europe. Sexual freedom is evident throughout this city of “live and let live,” and any gay, lesbian, transgendered or bisexual person will be made to feel immediately at home, surrounded by architectural history and art. What makes this open acceptance of sexual diversity so amazing is that not so very long ago—just a little over two decades in fact—there were no freedoms in this city at all. Before 1989 and the Velvet Revolution, Prague was the capital of Czechoslovakia, then part of the Communist Eastern Bloc. Today, there are still some remnants of the city’s Soviet domination, though you have to look closely to find them. What shines apparent is a thrill ride of Eastern European efficiency, cobblestones, and Old World charm. Getting to Prague is far more of a challenge than enjoying this wonderful city once you’re there. From Fort Lauderdale International Airport, it’s a 15 hour, two-stop plane trip aboard Delta and KLM, before you’ll get to disembark at Prague Václav Havel Airport (PRG). Located six miles west of city center, it’s a short taxi ride into town and your selection of hotels. Our favorite by far is the Hotel Paris Prague (U Obecního Domu 1080/1). Built in 1904 as an Art Nouveau gem, this grand hotel was seized from the original owners during wartime and only recently returned to them for restoration and an incredibly detailed fluff and fold that has polished its historical significance. You can book a single room for 100 Euros a night, with free Internet wireless, full breakfast, and use of the hotel’s fitness center. The Hotel Paris Prague is just around the corner from the Municipal House, located in Old Town at Náměstí Republiky 1090/5. This is another building which is an architectural delight, having been completed in 1913. It houses the 1,500 seat Smetana Hall, where the Prague Royal Orchestra calls home. On its ground floor and in
its basement, several enormous restaurants make it easy to experience authentic Czech cuisine on the cheap while surrounded by art nouveau stained glass windows and Bohemian furniture. They are heavy eaters in the Czech Republic, where meat and potatoes rule. You’ll get a whole new appreciation for super-sized when you experience a Municipal House dinner, eaten to the accompaniment of an accordion player—a remnant of the city’s literal Bohemian past. For a touch of home, try the James Dean (V Kolkovně 1), a 1950s-style American diner smack in the middle of Old Town, right off the Old Town Square. The red leatherette booths look like they began life as back seats from 1952 Chevy Bel Airs. The menu selections are thick with hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries and onion rings, with the expected portraits of Hollywood stars showcased on the walls. For entertainment, it’s hard to beat the Vinohrady Theater (Náměstí Míru 6,) a breathtaking Art Nouveau treasure with appropriate gold gilding on nearly every ceiling. The building sits on the side of the grand church of St. Ludmila, a twin-towered celebration to the patron saint of Bohemia. It is a central meeting spot in the elegant residential Vinohrady neighborhood, known for its wealth, fine architecture (Neo-Renaissance, Art Nouveau, Pseudo Baroque, and Neo-Gothic styles) as it is for its gay inhabitants who recognize a classy place to play. Next week we’ll highlight the best of the clubs and bars found here, with their smooth baby-faced patrons looking like stars from Bel Ami porn. It’s Prague and it’s happening.
