THE SCENE

Hottie Artists, a ‘New Moon’ at Bailey’s Bistro, and ‘An Evening in Paradise’ By Rick Karlin

o

The dance floor at Scandals Saloon was packed for Rebecca’s dance class, while bartenders Warren and Ric kept the crowd lubricated and entertained from behind the main bar. (Don’t forget: On Sunday, the patio is packed with the karaoke crowd.) Although Pinche Taqueria on Wilton Drive is closed, the property owner is looking for a tenant to move into (and possibly take over the name) of the late (and brief) southwestern eatery. Speaking of the south end of the Drive, we hear that Carol Moran of New Moon is set to take over the space formerly occupied by Bailey’s Bistro. Wilton Manors’ monthly Island City Art Walk brought folks out in droves to the Drive to see the beautiful works of many talented artists, including 1/16 Guy cover story subject Gordon Nebeker, as well as James Vaucher and Brett Aiton. Not to take anything away from these talented men, but I think part of their popularity had to do with the fact that they’re both hotties! Brett’s work is on display at The Naked Grape Wine and Tapas, where he works as a bartender. Co-owners Tim Slivinski and Caleb ben-Avram are always gracious hosts. Later that night, Village Pub was packed ball-to-ball (with folks from the LGBT bowling tournament, so get your mind out of the gutter). In Miami, we hit the cocktail reception for the Gay and Lesbian International Sports Association site inspection team, held at the LGBT Visitor Center and hosted by the MiamiDade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. The City of Miami is in the final bidding to host the 4th Annual World OutGames in 2017. (The competition is Reykjavik, Iceland—where would you rather be?) The local stars came out on Saturday for “An Evening in Paradise,” the big annual fundraiser for the Pride Center at Equality Park. CEO Robert Boo, COO Kristofer Fegenbush, Development Assistant Bryan Bowlby, and the rest of the amazing team at the Pride Center were aglow with the event’s huge success. Historic Richardson Park was awash in food and libation stations, while smoke machines lent an unearthly air to the hotties who posed in huge “picture”

frames, dressed as the Seven Deadly Sins. Among the many, many we spotted who came out to enjoy the sights and sounds were Dean Trantalis, Alan Beck, Drew Miller, Kevin Murdoch, Chris Caputo, Lisa Abel, Ellen Slavin, fellow Chicagoans Doug Ferguson, John Bolton, and Dave Stubbins, and Wilton Manors Vice Mayor Tom Green. Florida’s Own Dame Edna had the Manchester Room at Alibi packed—so packed, in fact, that Alibi will soon knock down the wall into the adjoining storefront to make room for Le Dame and her fans (but not her hips). Behind the bar, Byron was working double-time to keep Dame Edna and customers Jerry, Tony, and Kip lubricated. On the patio, we spied Randy D’Agostino and Chuck Hyde, the managing partner of Chicago’s legendary Sidetrack, who was was staying at The Cabanas (and who swears he wasn’t in town looking for a space to open a Wilton Manors Sidetrack). Tonight, we’re dashing off to Dapur from 6:30 to 9 p.m. for Mix, the Guy Magazine monthly networking event. Karin Ward, Oscar Hernandez, Frank Vigliotti, Joshua Bolton, Alex Escobar, RJ Hadley, Richard Mandel, and Irwin Drucker will be there, how about you?

THE WEEK

Super Bowl, Salvation Sailing, and one ‘Wicked’ Show The Week 1/31 to 2/6/2013

Broadway Cast of Wicked (1/31) By Grant James

Thursday,

1/31

“Wicked” is as Wicked Does oMost of us are familiar with Dorothy’s side of things in the “Wizard of Oz,” but, c’mon gurl—there’s always two sides to every story. “Wicked” presents events told from the perspective of the Witch of the West herself; you decide which one is the more “biased” account (and let’s be real, if some snot-nose kid had killed your sister and had the nicest kicks in town to boot, you’d be bitter too). The awardwinning musical proves there’s always more to a story than meets the eye. Through February 17 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5 Ave., Fort Lauderdale).

____________________ Friday,

Believe it or Not, the Quiet One is ‘Teller’ oThe chemistry between the powerhouse illusionist/ magician/comedy team of Penn & Teller has always fascinated audiences. One is a loud, opinionated, often-abrasive extrovert, the other virtually a mime (sounds just like my ex and me). The pair’s relationship offstage is also notable in that they spend hardly any time together when they aren’t working, in order to maintain professionalism and respect for boundaries. The magical comedians Penn and Teller bring their infamous variety show to Hard Rock Live, at 8 p.m. (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood). THE WEEK continues on page 32

THE WEEK

Jimmy Buffet (2/2)

Set Sail for Salvation oThe all-gay, eight-night Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas Eastern Caribbean Cruise departs from Fort Lauderdale on February 2. Before that sailing, several thousand fresh gay males will descend upon our fair city: Fresh meat. Catch them at one of the biggest kickoff parties for the cruise, Salvation Sailaway. Even if you don’t get to see the Caribbean, the party—which sold out last year—is bound to be memorable. Featuring music from DJ Abel. Bon voyage! At 10 p.m., at Exit 66. (219 S Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, Fort Lauderdale).

Art is in the Eye of the Wine-holder oJoin Gallery XO for its free wine tasting event, held the first Friday of each month. Enjoy sampling wines from around the world and view great art, including works by Maciel Cantelmo (awarded First Place in Show from Broward Art Guild and Arts United for his drawing, “Handful”), including “His,” and “Boy,” the exciting and erotic pastels of Michael Bryette, the eclectic stylings of Henry “Ri-Ri” Clarke, and the exclusive collection of the late Steve Walker. 2376 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors.

Margaritaville oTropics-loving, margarita-guzzling, parrotfancying superstar Jimmy Buffet and his Coral Reefer Band perform his laid-back repertoire of island-escapist-inspired music and flip-flopwearing fun. Parrotheads take note: he isn’t getting any younger. At 8 p.m., in the BB&T Center (2555 NW 136 Ave, Sunrise).

“Be Our Guest!” A Cappella oCan you feel the love tonight? A Greater Fort Lauderdale chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society pulls out all the stops with a salute to your favorite Disney songs, sung A Cappella. Music to make the iciest heart go all warm and fuzzy (and if not, what kind of monster are you?). Orlando based group The Humdingers join the Sunshine Chordsmen as they take on music from “Beauty and the Beast,” “Mary Poppins,” “The Lion King,” “Dumbo,” and more. At 2 and 7 p.m., in the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5 Ave., Fort Lauderdale).

THE WEEK Pig Dance: Like a Podcast, But Rawer oSouth Florida’s biggest, rawest monthly party comes with a numerical sequence, just like a podcast. Pig Dance #54 is the place for leathermen, daddies, and real guys to throw down in their own circuit party. Pigs, bears, cubs, otters (and every other kind of man-imal under the sun) will flood Ramrod for a night of carousing, dancing, and really amazing house music. Starts at 10 p.m. (1508 NE 4th Ave./Wilton Dr., Fort Lauderdale).

____________________ Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday Funday oIt’s a safe bet that the biggest game of the year will be dominating the bars of the Drive for one reason: Beyonce’s halftime performance. After her lip-synch debacle during the 2013 Presidential Inauguration—Snap!—Queen B has been under the microscope. The halftime show will be her opportunity to win fans back (a la Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl performance), so we’re sure everyone will be watching. Catch drink specials at all of the bars up and down the Manors’ main drag and beyond, including buckets, buffets, and buff men.

Prodigies and Masters of Tomorrow: Sijing Ye of China oThe Miami International Piano Festival presents the ivory-tickling prodigy Sijing Ye, all the way from China to perform selections by Chopin, Brahms, Debussy, and Liszt. The 21 year old pianist is widely considered to be one of the planet’s rising musical geniuses, highly praised for her showcases. Plat it again, Ye. At 5 p.m., in the Aventura Arts and Cultural Center (3385 NE 188 St., Aventura).

_______________ Monday RuPaul and JenMc, Together Again oBill’s Filling Station presents Season 5 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” at 9 p.m., followed at 10:30 by Jennifer McClain’s Cast Party, with $4 Stoli cocktails, $5 Martinis, and $2.50 draft beer from 9 p.m. to close (2209 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors)

“xx” Marks the Spot oEnglish pop-Rock band The xx is finally coming to Miami Beach. The group’s dark, romantic, brooding sound has garnered them attention among many big name artists, and landed them on lists for top albums of the year for both of their albums, 2009’s “xx,” and last year’s “Coexist.” See the group that earned a rating of “Universal Acclaim” from Metacritic while you can still catch them in an intimate theater setting; the next time they’re here it’s likely to be in an arena. At 7:30 p.m., in the Fillmore Miami Beach (1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach).

That’s the Ticket: Jon Lovitz, Chris Kattan, and Tim Meadows o“Saturday Night Live” alumni Jon Lovitz, Chris Kattan, and Tim Meadows take to the stage for an evening of laughs and memories from their long comedy careers. On SNL, Lovitz made famous the tagline “Yeah, that’s the ticket” as Pathological Liar Tommy Flanagan, and later contributed his voice to the short-lived but groundbreaking animated series “The Critic” (remember “It stinks?”). Kattan brought down the house with hilarious turns as “monkey-boy” Mr. Peepers and the sexually-ambiguous Mango, and later co-starring with fellow SNL player Will Ferrell in “A Night at the Roxbury.” With 10 years under his belt, Meadows had one of the longest tenures at SNL. His role as the disgruntled Principal in “Mean Girls” was a scream and his most famous character, Leon Phelps, “The Ladies Man,” was made into a feature film. Catch all three of them together in one night, performing their own standup RuPaul (2/4) acts. At 8 pm, in the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts (701 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach).

Mojo Restaurant Where Style Meets Flavor

When Domenick Falcione and Anthony DeMaio opened Mojo Restaurant in August 2010, it was nearly 30 years to the day after they first met over a game of craps at Caesars Palace in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Oceans Aweigh: The World’s Gay Sailin g Hottest 2013 s Gay Cruises Photo: Cruise off the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia (courtesy of Source Events)

By Robert Elias Deaton

o

On February 15, 1986, the first all-gay cruise set sail from the port of New Orleans. It was trailblazing to be on that “A Cruise to Remember,” with 750 other gay men and women aboard the SS Bermuda Star, nicknamed by its passengers the SS Brenda Star for the voyage. Gay travel agency owner (and RSVP Vacations founder) Kevin J. Mossier created the concept when no hotel or resort would permit him to take over an entire complex for an extended holiday, which he

wanted to spend with a few (hundred) gay friends. And with it, a whole industry was born! Today, there are over a dozen and a half allgay cruises. There’s even larger number of Gay Groups organized aboard mix cruises where the majority of the passengers are straight, but gays and lesbians are booked through travel agency organizers who host private events, dances, excursions and dinners just for them. You may be surprised to discover just how many are planned for this year alone. GAY SAILINGS continues on page 46

TRAVEL

Hostility on the Horizon Where NOT to Cruise By Robert Elias Deaton

o

Each week, we take you to the best destinations in LGBT travel, our pen flowing what bits of insider info gleaned from visits to some of the most incredible destinations on earth. What we don’t often showcase, however, is the other end of the travel spectrum— those vacation spots that could be dangerous or even deadly for the less-than-informed. Broken down by region, following are some thoughts on places that you may want to avoid, and the reasons why. Asia: Iran, Yemen, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Krygyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. These countries in Central Asia and the Middle East all have laws on the books that criminalize homosexuality. If you are found to be gay or lesbian in any of these places, your punishment will range from imprisonment (Egypt and Saudi Arabia) to death (Iran and Yemen). In many of the “—stan” countries, gay men have been known to “disappear.” No jail, no court, no judgment. Removal. Indian Subcontinent: Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Bhutan. These exotic locales have the mystery of adventure that unfortunately comes linked with laws that offer no protection to same-sex persons. In Sri Lanka, the Island newspaper printed a letter to the editor which advocated handing lesbians over to convicted rapists in order to “cure them” of their illnesses. In Bhutan, homosexuality is illegal under articles 213 and 214 of the penal code. In Bangladesh, any member of the LGBT community is likely to face discrimination, harassment, fines, and penalties up to life imprisonment. The Maldives, with its luxury hotels and tropical breezes, is safe if you remain within the confines of the resorts. Outside this protected environment, homosexuality is illegal under Islamic Sharia law, and, most recently, the Maldives was one of 67 signatory nations opposing the UN declaration on sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as opposing a landmark LGBT rights resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council. Polynesia: Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. In 2012, police in Fiji canceled a planned Gay Rights March,

Military display in Yemen acknowledging a undercurrent of gay intolerance on the island. In Samoa, homosexuality is strictly illegal according to the Samoan Crimes Ordinance of 1961, and punishable by prison sentences in the five-to-seven year range. In Papua New Guinea, homosexual acts have been illegal since British colonial times. Men caught in same-sex acts could face up to 14 years in prison, with the new government of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill pledging to crack down on homosexuals who are thought to be behind the increase in HIV/AIDS cases. The Solomon Islands are politically unstable, and homosexuals have been deported or jailed. Eurasia: Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. The post-Iron Curtain atmosphere of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine has increasingly hostile to gays and lesbians. Where once they were openly tolerated, currently there is an on-going campaign of government-sanctioned violence against gays, including a new proposed law in Russia that would outlaw “homosexual propaganda” and organized gatherings of LGBT persons. Central America: Belize. Bordered by Mexico on the north and Guatemala on the south and west, Belize is the only country in Central America to “enjoy” state-sponsored homophobia. In 2003, when the U.S. was legalizing same-sex rights countrywide, Belize was strengthening its homophobic laws with the addition of Section 53 to its Criminal Code, which states: “Every person who has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any person shall be liable to imprisonment for ten years.” The country stands at odds with neighbors Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama, which have no criminalization based on sexual orientation, and Honduras, which has laws from 1899 permitting same-sex activity. Remember: With all the world at your feet, why go anywhere you’re not appreciated? Sail safely.

Cruising the Buffet or Dinner Table on the High Seas By Andy Kress

o

Ahhhhhh, the exhilarating joys of sailing the seven seas on a luxury vessel to anywhere your heart desires. The choices are almost endless for places to go and things to do. But no matter what luxury liner you are on, or to which ports you intend to go, one place you will definitely visit repeatedly will be the ship’s buffet or dining area. This is not an area to be avoided or denied. If anything, we encourage you to sample its temptations while setting specific limits for yourself. Your dining experience on the ship should be just as memorable as the places you intend to visit. Each meal can be another chance to add a wonderful new memory to your unforgettable trip. The ship is not moving very fast from port to port, so while sailing, take the time and stop to enjoy your meals, even if you are traveling alone. Eating slower gives your body a chance to recognize that it is getting full, thus enhancing a slimmer and trimmer you while vacationing. It takes 15 minutes for your brain to recognize that your stomach is full. Taking the time to reminisce about the day’s events between bites not only brings you closer to the people you with whom you are are sailing, but it also gives the body a chance to process the delectable dishes the chef has prepared for you. When there is buffet-style dining on the ship, most people’s decision-making choices go downhill. This plethora of food is often too much for some people to handle. A buffet is set in place so that you have a variety of tastes and choices, so use it for just that. Try sampling a small amount of all the foods that attract you at the buffet line, but refrain from making a pile of any one thing while filling your plate. Be adventurous when choosing your items, try healthy choices that are different than your usual foods at home. Taking small plates back from the line keeps your portion sizes down. And remember, you’re not denying yourself anything because you can always go back for more. If you do go back to the buffet table, try replacing your second helping with fruit. Fruits have natural sugars that can be just as sweet as desserts that use cane sugars. Fruit also has lots of hydration and insoluble fiber;

both of these are requirements if you are going to have a few drinks while setting sail. There is also plenty of table-side dining available on any cruise line and I strongly encourage this style of eating. Cruise liners large and small offer sit-down restaurants. If your willpower is weak, this is a great alternative to the buffet line. Sitting at a table and being served a gourmet meal while sipping on a glass of fine wine sounds good to almost everyone, so take the time to treat yourself while vacationing and make your evening meal an experience. Additionally, tableside dining can make your meal on the high seas that much more of an intimate experience if traveling with your significant other. This is a great time to splurge on romance, rather than dessert. Your partner and your waistline will love you for it. Remember to use these eating tips while you are cruising around the world, and look just as fabulous as the places you are about to explore.
